A fetal ultrasound showed that Lauren’s baby, Stratton, had kidney dysplasia and ectopic ureter, conditions that prevent one or both kidneys from correctly forming.

Because his condition only a ected one kidney, Stratton lived without complication until age 15. Then, he began experiencing stomach pain. His parents reached out to urologists at Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt for answers. They determined Stratton’s kidney was not functional and could be removed.

At one of the few hospitals in the country using pediatric robotic surgery, Stratton’s nationally ranked urology team at Monroe Carell robotically removed the a ected kidney through tiny incisions. This resulted in less pain and minimal recovery time.

Today, Stratton is pain free and enjoying life, hanging out with friends and playing lacrosse for Brentwood High School.

Reclaim Childhood for Your Kids

Driving away from Home Depot, a woman with a bun spiraled on top of her head and wearing a sexy, black maxi dress with a slit is videotaping herself as she walks across the parking lot to Rooms to Go. Her kids are with her, but she’s ignoring them, much more involved with herself. She’s completely unaware that my car is idling, waiting for her to reach the curb. The kids jump onto the sidewalk as their mom continues to film herself in the road. At least the kids are going somewhere.

For a rising number of kids, their childhood memories will not include playing in the park with Mom or hanging out with friends or even dreaming about getting older. Nope. Today’s kids are often sitting eerily in front of screens for up to seven hours a day. They are often alone, indoors, seeing content their parents may not want them to. But they sit quietly; it’s so nice when the kids are well-behaved.

But listen, it’s your job to keep your kids safe. And yet, inexplicably, many parents are softening, ignoring the tough parts of parenting and allowing permissiveness to reign. But we have to pay attention to what’s going on because the mental health stats are not good for kids. And we can’t just blame the pandemic.

Long before COVID-19 hit — from 2009 to 2017 — the rates of depression in kids ages 14 - 17 increased by more than 60 percent. Instagram started in 2010. Snapchat started in 2011. TikTok in 2016. See what I’m pointing to? It’s no surprise that a recent report from Common Sense Media found an enormous upswing in Instagram and Snapchat use during isolation. The numbers for TikTok — which must be wild — are not available yet.

“It makes me want to cry,” says Diana Graber, founder of digital citizenship site Cyberwise, and author of Raising Humans in a Digital World. “These platforms are not for children.”

They aren’t. They are rife with social comparisons and the potential to see events that you’re not included in or missing out on. That’s painful — especially for kids. Forget finding out you aren’t invited to a classmate’s birthday party! That’s small fries compared to what kids see and read on social media now.

As a mom of four, I’m a brave soul, but when somebody is a jerk to me online, it hurts and I shut down. Imagine what it does to your kids. The entire compareyour-own-boring-life-to-all-the-other-much-more-happy-and-beautiful-people spells devastation for children. They are not equipped to handle it nor should they be. TikTok is NOT a cute app for kids, and parents shouldn’t slough it off. We should all be trying to help our kids.

What to do. Graber says parents can ask their children to analyze how they spend their time over the course of a single day, to help them pinpoint how often they’re on screens. She says that just this awareness can help. She also says to ask your kids to create a bucket list of 25 things they would do if they didn’t have a screen to turn to — and to encourage their efforts to go do those things. Just trying to help them move the needle back to safe and secure a little bit may be a surprising exercise for you all. Maybe they secretly need a break from it, anyway. Maybe you do, too.

In any event, be sure to have regular conversations with your kids about what they see on social media — be open with them and share the good, the bad and the ugly that you see, too. It’s a first step toward getting our kids’ lives back on track — and to reclaiming for them a bit of good, healthy “normalcy.”

Help! My Kids Won’t Eat!

“First question is, what ARE they eating? I’m assuming they aren’t starving themselves, so what are you substituting for the meals? Don’t buy those substitutions anymore. Then it’s not a fight, it simply doesn’t exist. If they throw a fit and don’t eat, that’s OK. Leave it on the table and they can come back for it later or be hungry. No child will starve with a plateful of food on the table (no matter how stubborn they are.) If they are really stubborn enough to go hungry, they will eat a good breakfast in the morning and realize that a fit later on won’t change what’s on the table.”

If you are hungry, a peanut butter sandwich and a fruit is your only option. At that age, they also get to pick dinner two nights a week. That way I know they’ll eat something on those nights. They will eat when they are hungry. Yes, at this age dinner is annoying. Ours were a pain until about 7. Now my older two cook/ help cook and still pick two meals a week because I don’t want to plan seven meals a week plus lunch and breakfast. Youngest is starting, he’s 3 and autistic so very limited on food options but is doing good with his three bites at dinner. Good

“Be strong. You have to be stronger than they are. Our rule was always: you have to try everything and you don’t get up from the table unless you eat your veggies. My kid was once given the same meal for four straight meals because she refused to try it. They’re 15 and 17 now. My 15 year old will eat anything; my 17 year old is still picky, but she eats what’s made because I’m not a café and the whole family shouldn’t suffer because she wants to eat like a toddler.”

“Try substituting a fruit with similar nutritional content for a veggie they don’t like. For example, I had a picky one who wouldn’t eat orange and yellow veggies, but he did like cantaloupe (I even snuck in Vitamin A by serving pumpkin pie for dessert sometimes). Mine would

always eat broccoli and asparagus, so we served those a lot, though we did tire of them. Try always including something they’ll eat as a side dish. Mine might have rejected the main course, but still would eat mac and cheese or mashed potatoes. Offer snacks like cheese and fruit to fill in the nutritional gaps help. Also, if they help to prepare something, they might be excited to eat it.”

“They will eat when they are hungry. Make sure they have healthy choices and do not have snacks close to meal times. Do not stress over it. If they choose not to eat, wrap that plate in plastic wrap or foil and put it in the fridge. When they want something a little later, pull that plate out. Dinner is what you fix. Do NOT make two meals. If they don’t eat, they will at the next one. You can give them a choice between green beans and corn, but that meal is it.”

WHAT YOU MUST KNOW ABOUT Child Safety

Parenting is stressful enough without having to worry about the equipment you use with your little ones. Keep the following in mind when buying and using child equipment.

ARE YOU USING THAT CAR SEAT CORRECTLY?

It’s our job as mamas and papas to minimize accidents and keep our Littles safe from preventable injuries.

Regardless of your approach to parenting, one thing all parents can agree on is child safety. It seems like new recalls on child equipment, and news of another young child injured by equipment occur each week.

Car Seats

One situation parents worry about is driving with their baby or child on board. There’s a good reason for this. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), car accidents are one of the leading causes of death for young children. As the NHTSA points out, car seats offer your child the best protection in the event of an accident. So it’s essential you have the right equipment and use it correctly.

Avoid buying second-hand if possible because a used car seat may not be within its expiration date, and you can’t be sure it hasn’t been in an accident. Both of these factors are critical to your child’s safety in the event of a crash.

Also, always follow the manufacturer’s instructions for installation as well as the height and weight limits.

The following are the four main types of car seats and how to use them:

• REAR-FACING – Babies and toddlers should face the rear as long as possible until they outgrow the height or weight limits specified on the car seat.

• FORWARD FACING - Once children outgrow a rear-facing seat, they should stay in a forward-facing seat until they exceed the height or weight limit stated on it.

• BOOSTER - Older children who can use a seat belt, but need to sit higher for the seatbelt to fit correctly should use a booster car seat.

• SEAT BELT - Once kids are tall enough to sit on the seat with the seat belt in a safe position, a car seat is no longer required.

In any of these seats, check that the clips or seat belt are in the right place every time. Clips should be clasped at the armpit level. Seat belts should lie across your child’s lap with the top across the chest and shoulder (not across the neck or face).

If you’re unsure whether your seat is correctly installed or need help, take it to a fire station or car seat event to check for correct installation.

As an extra safety measure, add a tag or sticker with important information about your child and contact information in case of an accident.

Cribs

Babies and toddlers spend at least half their day sleeping, often in a crib. So crib safety is vital. Adhere to the following to keep your child safe.

Don’t use a crib with drop-down sides. These were banned as of June 2011 for safety reasons. So if buying a previously used crib, check for this feature if you’re not sure when it was made. When buying secondhand, also make sure there are no missing parts or issues with the paint, splintering or loose connections.

When your child is in their crib, follow age-based recommendations to avoid SIDS. Babies should be placed on their backs, and mattresses should be flat and firm with a tight-fitting sheet. There should be nothing loose in the crib, such as a blanket, pillow or stuffed toys. Also, make sure no cords or strings are anywhere near the crib, which increases the risk of strangulation. Be aware of heavy art or decorations over the crib as well that could fall.

One of the most significant hazards with cribs as your child grows is the risk of falling. Ensure the mattress height is appropriate so your child can’t roll or climb out. When your toddler can climb out, the crib is no longer suitable or safe. So it’s time to change your child’s sleeping arrangement.

Changing Tables

As babies grow and can roll around, sit up, stand or play around, it’s more challenging to change their diaper. A safe changing table is es-

sential to keep your baby secure and reduce the risk of falls. The table should have a guardrail at least two inches high around it, and the chang ing pad should have raised sides to prevent easy rolling. A strap with a buckle is recommended to keep your baby secure. But don’t rely on it solely. Also, keep all diaper supplies within reach under the changing table, so you never have to leave your baby’s side. Like any equipment, make sure the changing table is put together correctly and sturdy, and be aware of the manufacturer’s recommended weight limits.

Swings & Rockers

Swings and rockers can help soothe a fussy or sleepy baby, especially if they have issues with laying flat like reflux or need a soothing motion to calm them. Swings and rockers are also a handy place to entertain babies while you get things done. But only put a baby in a swing when you’re able to see and be aware of your baby.

This type of baby equipment has had many recalls. Some rockers and swings are advertised for sleep and to help with naps. But according to manufacturers and organizations such as the American Academy of Pediatrics and US Consumer Product Safety Commission, swings and rockers aren’t safe for sleeping without supervision.

The safest way for babies to sleep is flat on their backs. This type of equipment puts a baby’s head and neck at an angle, which can negatively impact their breathing. Discontinue the use of swings and rockers when your baby can sit up or roll. Also, always follow the recommended weight and height limits.

Strollers

Strollers are a useful way to transport children. But anything on wheels carries risk. It’s essential to follow the manufacturer’s stated weight limit

and use strollers according to their directions.

Use only jogging-style strollers for running or faster activity. Also, make sure your stroller is set up correctly, and re-tighten bolts and other parts occasionally as well. Check tire alignment and inflation levels regularly, if applicable.

If using a car seat with the stroller, only use car seats that are made to go with your specific stroller. Then make sure the seats are correctly installed and securely clicked before using. Never leave your child unattended in a stroller, and always buckle them correctly. Allow only one child per seat and make sure they’re sitting down at all times (unless the stroller has an area designed specifically for standing). When not in motion, use the stroller locks to prevent it from rolling away. Many strollers, particularly jogging strollers, have a wrist strap you should wear in case the stroller does start to move for any reason.

To learn more about child equipment safety, the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is a great resource. It posts recalls, safety recommendations for parents, and equipment safety requirements for manufacturers.

It isn’t possible to eliminate all potential risks to children. So the best way to keep children safe is for an adult to be present and aware when equipment is in use. Be sure to check regularly for product recalls. New purchases should come with postcard forms to send back to the company for alerts of any recalls with the product. Also, periodically check equipment to make sure it’s in good shape, and don’t leave young children unsupervised.

HELPING A CHILD WITH A DISORDER

When worrying gets in the way of a child’s functioning, parents need to get help rather than arranging the child’s life to avoid the triggers.

Kids can make their worries grow simply by paying attention to them — we all can — but the pandemic has exacerbated everything to the point that anxiety is now front and center for kids.

My daughter was nine years old when she had her first panic attack. She was trembling, out of breath and her heart pounded. These symptoms persisted for almost 10 minutes and nothing I said or did could help her calm down.

Because her symptoms occurred before her performance in a class play, though, I dismissed it as stage fright.

When she suffered the same symptoms a short time later — this time before a party at her school — I realized something was wrong.

Especially when she told me what triggered her intense physical symptoms: she could not stop worrying that something bad would happen to me as I drove to her school.

Having some anxiety is a normal part of life for most kids. After all, what child doesn’t feel anxious before taking a test? Or making a presentation in front of the class? And what about trying out for the team?

Some children, though, feel worry or fear constantly.

According to Margaret Benningfield, M.D., a specialist in anxiety disorders with Vanderbilt Behavioral Health, anxiety disorders involve “intense, excessive and persistent worry and fear about everyday situations.” Further, such feelings of anxiety and panic “interfere with daily activities, are difficult to control, are out of proportion to the actual danger and can last a long time.”

9.4 percent of children ages 3 - 17 were diagnosed with anxiety in 2016 - 2019. That’s 5.8 million kids. And since the COVID-19 pandemic, the number of kids with an anxiety disorder is even higher.

After visiting the pediatrician, my daughter was diagnosed with Generalized Anxiety Disorder. Now she sees a therapist and takes medication to treat her anxiety. Through her experience, I have learned so much about anxiety disorders in children. I’m sharing what I’ve learned below in hopes of helping other parents and caregivers.

Types of Anxiety Disorder in Children

There are several types of anxiety disorders, related to what the worries or fears are about, or how children handle them. According to Vanderbilt Health, the most common anxiety disorders in kids include the following:

• Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) is constant worrying about a lot of different things out of proportion to the actual circumstance.

• Panic disorders are characterized by sudden, intense fear that leaves a child feeling physically overwhelmed and out of control, even when there is no danger.

• Separation anxiety is the fear that something bad will happen to a parent or loved one when the child is separated from them. Some separation anxiety is a normal developmental phase for babies and toddlers, but not necessarily for older children.

• Social anxiety is extreme anxiety and fear of being embarrassed in social situations, like talking with classmates or answering a question in class. It is more than simple shyness.

Symptoms

According to the CDC, the most typical symptoms of anxiety disorders in children include:

• Showing anxiety or expressing worry or fear on most days

One-in-10 Tennessee Children Struggles with Mental Health

According to the newly released 2022 Kids Count Data Book, a 50-state report of recent household data analyzing child and family well-being, Tennessee ranks 36th in overall child well-being.

In Tennessee, nearly one in 10 children are diagnosed with anxiety or depression. Between 2016 and 2020, the Data Book reports children across the US aged 3 - 17 were 26 percent more likely to encounter anxiety or depression. This increase represents 1.5 million children who are struggling with mental health.

“Mental health is just as important as physical health in a child’s ability to thrive,” says Lisa Hamilton, president and CEO of the Annie E. Casey Foundation who puts out the Data Book. “As our nation continues to navigate the fallout from the COVID crisis, policymakers must do more to ensure all kids have access to the care and support they need to cope and live full lives,” she adds.

• Trouble calming down after leaving a parent or loved one, or extreme homesickness

How to Help

Talking to your pediatrician is a first step, says Benningfield. This is what we did in my daughter’s case when we visited her doctor. A primary care doctor or mental health specialist can evaluate your child and ensure that your child’s symptoms are caused by anxiety and not another condition, such as trauma.

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and medication are the most accepted treatments to help children overcome an anxiety disorder according to the Anxiety Disorders Association of America.

CBT teaches your child skills and tools to help them feel less anxious and fearful. Through CBT, for instance, my daughter learned to utilize tools like a “worry box”. She’d write down her worry on a piece of paper, then stuff the paper in a box. It was a tangible way to release her fear.

Prescription medication may also help. Parents should work closely with a health care provider to manage the use of medication and monitor your child’s response.

In addition, pediatricians advocate that parents let their children know they are available to listen whenever their children are ready to talk. Many kids with anxiety believe their parents won’t understand — they also don’t want to worry their parents or disappoint them — and thus, they can work hard to hide their fears. That’s why being ready to listen is so important.

My daughter also joined an anxiety disorder support group at her school, allowing her to connect with peers that understand what she’s going through. As well, I have found support talking to other parents of children with anxiety disorders. So many have been supportive and understanding, making me feel less alone.

Anxiety is a treatable, manageable condition. As parents, we can help kids with anxiety disorders receive the tools, support and love they need to live their healthiest lives possible.

CRAZIEST COSTUME

Pass out fliers inviting all the neighborhood kids to meet at your house an hour before trick-or-treating begins. Give everyone a name tag when they arrive. Then, each child and adult can fill out a voting slip. Include best costume,

scariest, funniest, most creative and more. Hand out a special prize to the winners of each category.

MOST GHOULISH YARD

Invite everyone in the neighborhood to join in a decorating contest. Categories can be scariest, cutest, silliest and best overall. Set a decorating deadline. Provide instructions on a flier so every house in the neighborhood can vote for the addresses they like best. Also, mention that neighbors should view all the homes after the deadline so voting works out. Get neighborhood kids to make up fun ‘Scariest House’ and other signs. Halloween!

FUNNIEST CARVED PUMPKIN

Ask the neighborhood to join you in a carved pumpkin contest. You can schedule a date and time when everyone will meet with their pumpkins at your home or a neighborhood park. Suggest everyone who participates pitch in $2 per pumpkin for a jackpot. To keep it fair, allow only one pumpkin per child. Prepare numbered cards in advance so each pumpkin will have its own number. Then, have everyone fill out a voting slip. The carver of the winning pumpkin gets the jackpot.

FUNNIEST HALLOWEEN GAME

Hand out fliers to everyone in the neighborhood or on your street to hold a Halloween game day. Ask each participating house to set up a Halloween kids game in their front yard. Participating homes can give out small prizes such as stickers or treats to each kid who plays their game. Kids can wander the neighborhood playing the games for the afternoon. When they’re done, have each child fill out a ballot for the most fun Halloween game. Then, post a chilling homemade sign in the yard of the winner.

SCARIEST SCARECROW

Get your neighbors to participate in the scariest scarecrow contest. Set a specific day when the scarecrows should be displayed in everyone’s yards. Have everyone in the neighborhood hand-deliver their vote to you by the end of the day that the scarecrows are set out. Then, deliver a fun Halloween-ish homemade yard sign to the winning home.

CREEPIEST FOOD

Hold a simple neighborhood potluck Halloween party. Each participating family should be instructed to bring a Halloween-themed food or dessert. Place a numbered card next to each dish. Then, have everyone fill out a ballot for the cutest, grossest, funniest and scariest food. Once the winners are announced, take photos of the families next to their creepy food. Then, everyone can dig in and eat the yummy dishes and treats.

• Add gloves and socks to keep hands and feet from getting cold.

Trick-or-Treating Tips

• Kids under age 12 should trick-or-treat with an adult, says the American Academy of Pediatrics

• Make sure your kid has a cell phone and is committed to answering it if you call; agree to a planned route, plus a time when kids are expected home

• Make sure your kids know to stay together

• Review your rules: Stay on sidewalks or lawns; no crossing major roads; never assume cars will stop; limit trick-or-treating to your own neighborhood

• Check your kids’ candy when they get home
