Private School Directory

M

oving past the pandemic and the educational earthquake it caused from reports of learning loss to the struggle to learn remotely, many parents are continuing to seek private school for their children. According to EdChoice, about 41% of parents are more likely to prefer a private education for their children in the post-pandemic world, even with the expensive price tag. The average annual tuition among America's 22,440 private K-12 schools is $12,350 as of August, 2021, according to Educationdata.org. If you're one of the parents keeping an eye on whether or not your public or homeschool situation is working for your kids, here's what to know about switching your child to private school.

Start Now.

Admission offices typically work about a year in advance of actual enrollment. If you're looking into a school that is particularly competitive, it is wise to make contact earlier. Most schools require admission tests, so additional lead time will allow more time for testing preparation and schedules. You can locate admission deadlines on school websites. According to the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS), many schools have a fixed admissions deadline in January. Others use rolling admissions (which means the school will offer places until all of their seats are filled). Each private school is unique and operates independently from other private schools.

Identify Matches.

Traditional or progressive? Small or large? Christian or not? Draw up a list of desirable qualities in order to rate your prospective schools. Parents seek quality academics, faculty excellence — and a safe place for their children to learn. This Private School Directory can introduce you to schools in the listing section (starting on page 9), but visiting schools and asking questions is the most valuable endeavor you can undertake to truly find a school that fits your family needs.

Due Diligence.

Your interviews with school administrators are crucial in determining whether a school is right for your child, but other sources can help you, too. Seek out parents who have children enrolled in your schools of in-

terest. You need real-world answers about academics, teachers, school history and rigor. Get as many different points of view as you can, and keep a log of your contacts with various schools that you update as you go along.

Keep it Real.

A school's name, recognition and reputation within the Middle Tennessee community may influence your final choice, but it shouldn't be the main influencer. Your child's performance in school will determine the college he gets into, so don't assume that a name guarantees a favorable outcome. Plus, no matter how lauded and well regarded an institution is, it might not be the place where your child will feel most comfortable.

Brass Tactics.

Private school is expensive and tuition often makes families feel boxed out from the possibility. Funding a private education often means assembling different types of assistance such as loans, scholarships and — most important — financial aid from the school itself. "Financial aid from the school is far and away how most families fund private education if they cannot afford it," says Myra McGovern, vice president of media for NAIS. Most accessible financial aid for private K-12 students is provided by schools, although there are other forms of help available including the Children's Scholarship Fund (scholarshipfund.org). Parents can also take advantage of savings programs such as 529 Plans and Coverdell Education Savings Accounts. A 529 Plan is a tax-advantaged savings plan designed to help pay for tuition. Though it is a federal program, the plans are administered by every U.S. state. Originally limited to post-high school education costs, they were expanded to include K-12 education in 2017. Coverdell Education Savings Accounts (or ESAs) work very much like a 529 plan, offering tax-free investment growth and tax-free withdrawals when the funds are spent on qualified education expenses. Developing a plan with some enhanced budgeting will go a long way toward managing your private school expenses. Be sure to consult with a financial advisor on all of your options. Susan Day is editor of this publication and the mom of four amazing kids.

Private School Directory

GETTING INTO PRIVATE SCHOOL • START EARLY. Admissions deadlines come early in the calendar year, but the application process begins much earlier. You will need about six months up to a year. • YOUR CHILD'S INTERESTS. Do the schools you are interested in have the activities your child wants? Are the academics at the right level? • ACADEMIC PROFILE. No matter what grade you are applying for, schools care about your child's academic performance. Admissions officers will evaluate your child's abilities. Whether its through math team, debate club or language or athletics, a child with an academic, arts or athletic ability/passion is attractive to selective private schools. • PREPARE FOR TESTING and INTERVIEWS. Just like colleges, private schools use testing to evaluate applicants as well as interviewing. Be sure your child is prepared for these. • ATTEND OPEN HOUSES. You will meet admissions officers and have the chance to ask questions and learn more. • MANAGE DEADLINES. Have a clear grasp of school timelines!
