YOUR CHILD'S LEARNING STYLE Does your child learn best by seeing how things work? Does he excel by reading or listening? Does he like to participate in discussions? Is he logical or mathematical? Artistic? Does he prefer to learn in groups or work alone? MAKING THE MATCH After pinpointing your child's needs, now you can look at different schools to make the appropriate matches. Learn what type of learning experiences are available in class, on the playing field, in extra-curricular activities and in community service. ust as families heavily scrutinize schools they're interested in, schools do the same to prospective students. "Schools are looking for children who can be successful in their environment," says Becca Arnold, director of admissions and financial aid at Harding Academy. Private school administrators aim to team up with families who gel with their mission statements. Schools will look at previous transcripts, recommendations from former teachers, extra-curricular activities, standardized test scores and the all-important admissions interview. Each prospective student's real opportunity to shine happens during the interview, allowing admissions representatives to get a feel for the child's personality and interest in attending the school. "The interview personalizes all the statistics," says Bradford Gioia, head of school at Montgomery Bell Academy. "It can enlighten and surprise us as we learn about certain talents and curiosities students may have." Overall, schools seek students who show signs of successful academic futures that will represent the school in a positive manner. Interviewers will gauge the student's enthusiasm and how articulate he is. Just like job interviews, it's impressive to schools when prospective students ask questions in return.

ow much can you afford annually for your child's education? This is your first starting point. Private school tuition in Middle Tennessee ranges from $276 per month to more than $30,000 a year, and while most private schools do offer scholarships, they are usually reserved for families with limited incomes. That said, if you are convinced private school is the only option for your child, there are ways to pay such as 1) paying your fees in installments, 2) signing up with a tuition payment service and paying monthly installments, 3) applying for financial aid and/or 4) investigating other funding sources.
