the little things

The Toy Dilemma!

When friends walk into my house, the words I dread hearing the most are, “You have so many toys!” I look around and embarrassingly agree, Yes, we do have a lot of toys. Toys that I don’t know what to do with that have somehow piled up over the years. I’ve found more ways to organize them with cute storage bins and discrete compartments disguised as something functionable. And no matter how many toys we give away to local second hand stores like Once Upon a Child, or throw into boxes ready for Goodwill, they still seem to pile up.

One year, I tried giving to a local giving tree. My kids were inspired to wrap up toys they no longer wanted, ready to hand off to a child in need. I was impressed with their motivation and I saw change coming. This is it! We are going somewhere! I thought. Although it was a great learning experience (and I must admit, fun for all of us) it didn’t last long. We continued on with bad habits and the toys continued to grow. Not to mention, adding another little one to the equation didn’t help our toy problem.

One of my family members and I joked about this real-life toy dilemma, laughing it off like we are defeated and this is life now. They mentioned how they still have birthday and Christmas gifts that their kids haven't opened. Their idea was to re-wrap and put it under the tree for another holiday. Midway through laughing, I thought, That’s really not a terrible idea. Kids don’t need a whole lot, and more than likely, they won’t ever get to play with everything they have and will forget about it and move on. Therefore rotating toys throughout the year is also a great idea rather than buying new to downsize the clutter. See, I’m full of great ideas - it’s a matter of acting on them that’s the problem.

Talking to other moms and dads, I found I wasn’t the only one in a rut. We all are in it, but I was inspired to hear how some parents clean house and proactively rotate and give away toys on a regular basis. I encourage everyone (including myself) to take the little time you have throughout the day or week and set aside toys your kids no longer need or play with. There are lots of toy drives happening throughout the holiday season (check out our roundup on page 6); plus knowing Christmas is around the corner, it’s a great time to clear out some old toys before Santa brings the new ones. Here are some ways we can get started:

• Talk to kids about giving away toys.

• Ask your kids what their favorite three or four toys are.

• Separate items into like categories, then declutter.

• Give your kids choices and set limits.

• While the kids are in school, declutter the “junk” first.

As we all inspire each other this year to go out with the old and in with the new, I would love to hear about how you declutter (or at least attempt to) your toy dilemma. Tell me all about it by emailing me at amandahayward@daycommedia.com. Happy giving everyone!

FEEDBACK

Question:

“I despise the guilt that moms feel over this decision. I have no room to talk. I cried like a baby when I gave my oldest her first bottle of formula. But then after a few days I started to get some sleep and realized she wasn't crying because she wasn't hungry. I wasn't crying because I was no longer exhausted from constant feeding. And my husband was no longer wringing his hands because there was nother he could do to stop the stress I was putting on myself. Fed is ALWAYS best. Breastfeeding is hard. I admire any woman who manages to do it successfully. But formula is not evil. It felt that way at first, but then I came to realize it was absolutely the right decision for me."

“Don't stress out or feel guilty. It happens. Keep trying as long as Baby can, but you know your baby is healthy regardless of breastfeeding or formula. But like I said, I would not stress over it."

“Healthy is the goal! Fed is best! That baby will eventually drink cow's milk and eat McDonald's. Give yourself grace, momma!"

"As hard as it was to start supplementing and eventually exclusively use formula, the stressfulness of not knowing if I was producing enough milk was so hard. So once I started making the switch — and accepted that I could no longer exclusively breastfeed — there was a huge sense of relief knowing I didn't have to worry or stress about my supply running low anymore. But there were definitely tears and guilt at first."

“I'm confused about what there is to feel guilty for ... making sure a child is being fed? Would you feel guilty if the child were adopted? If you once had breast cancer and couldn't breastfeed? There's a million reasons for a child to take formula, and despite the horror stories you may hear, nobody else really cares how you feed your child. The point is that you do. It sound like this parent is definitely on it!"

“Breast milk is the best, so hopefully she will continue to nurse even if Baby doesn't get much. Supplement as a last resort. Human milk is always better than cow milk."

“Support matters. If your friend is local, have her check out SW Ohio Breastfeeding Moms. [There are] lots of moms who've been through a variety of situations and resources to connect with lactation specialists for addressing supply concerns."

“Why is everyone making moms nowadays feel guilty about feeding their babies formula?? Who cares? As long as they are fed and healthy! It’s ridiculous!"

How to Support Kidson the spectrum

Being proactive for your kids’ health and supporting them every step of the way early on can help optimize outcomes for your kid with autism spectrum disorder amongst their health and development.

Understanding Autism Spectrum Disorder

“Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disability. This means it is a brain-based condition,” says Julia S. Anixt, M.D., Jennifer D. Smith, PsyD and Stephanie Weber, PsyD, program and training directors at The Kelly O’Leary Center for Autism Spectrum Disorders and Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental and Related Disabilities (LEND), Division of Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics. “Although the exact cause of autism is not known, we know that genetics play an important role. Autism characteristics are not identified until about 12 -1 8 months of age when early language and social milestones are not met as expected.“

Understanding what is going on with your child with ASD will help when finding ways

Having a child with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) brings many challenges for both the child and family, but there is some light at the end of the tunnel.

to support them. In fact, researchers have found more than 100 genes to be strongly associated with autism, many of these relating to communication between cells in the brain (neurons) or control the expression of other genes that impact the way neurons function. Therefore, children with ASD may have sensitivities to stimuli in the environment, such as sounds, smells or lights that can be upsetting, according to Anixt, Smith and Weber.

Supporting Your Child with ASD

Every child with ASD is unique, and so are their specific goals. However, in general, support your child to develop his communication skills in ways that work best for him — whether that’s verbally, with sign language, or using augmentative communication approaches (such as pictures or a communication device).

Be Proactive

Being proactive means taking care of you and your family’s mental health and well-being, (including older and younger siblings). The

saying, “You can’t pour from an empty cup” has meaning for all. There are an abundance of family support organizations out there to gain information from or find solidarity in others with similar experiences, say Anixt, Smith and Weber.

TIPS FOR

SpecialPlaydatesNeeds

Playdates are an important part of childhood. They offer time for kids to interact socially without the structure of school or extracurricular activities. They also help kids learn to share, socialize and play freely while still having support from their parents as needed. Kids with special needs are no exception and benefit from playdates as much as their peers.

Be Open

Our natural reaction may be to avoid talking about any disabilities a child may have, but it is better to address any questions or concerns beforehand so everyone is more comfortable and knows what to expect.

Kerbe Shephard, OTR/L, occupational therapist and local mom who gave birth last summer to a baby girl with Down Syndrome — she named her “Fiona” after the Cincinnati Zoo hippo that played a special role in her child’s birth story — explains that prior to playdates, she explains her baby’s special needs to her 4-year-old son, Bryce.

“I am always happy to answer questions about my daughter’s Down Syndrome diagnosis, but I usually don’t communicate about it just for fun,” Shephard says. “My belief is she is who she is and is loveable anyway! As she gets older, I’m sure this will change, as play skills will likely be underdeveloped compared to peers.”

Talk to your children openly about differences they may have with their friends. Explain that just because others may seem different or express their joy differently, it doesn’t mean they don’t enjoy playdates or making new friends as well. Check in with the other parents prior to the playdate about whether there are any food allergies or restrictions.

Be Patient

Try to understand that kids may have different reactions to situations and things may not go exactly as expected, and that it may take some time for kids with special needs to warm up to the situation. Some children with special needs may prefer to participate in parallel play — when kids play beside each other, but do not interact with one another.

Be Inclusive and Understanding

It is also important to note that kids with disabilities or special needs are just like anyone else; they want to interact with friends and be loved and appreciated.

“I have always pointed out someone with an obvious special ability to my kiddos, and explained how neat it is that they have their unique ability,” says Holly Young, owner of Puzzle Pieces - A Sensory Sensation

in Montgomery and mom of four including twins, one who is diagnosed with Autism.

“I talk about how important it is to be friendly and helpful, and to also treat others as they would anyone else — with respect and kindness,” she continues.

Parenting is not easy and we all struggle with different challenges when it comes to our children. Ask the parent if they need help with anything prior to the playdate.

“Asking what they may need ahead of time or just being observant to their struggles,” says Young.

Be patient and understanding. The other parent may be over whelmed or tired, and it may have been challenging to get there. Sarah Lyons is a freelance writer and a mother of six.
