Read. Read. Read. That's the message of United Way’s Imagination Library. In Erie County, since its launch in 2013, the Imagination Library has distributed 596,842 books to 20,455 children. The program sends books out to infants through age 5 every month. The Imagination Library for Erie County is funded 100 percent by local support of United Way of Erie County. Avoid summer slide 20 minutes a day The term summer slide refers to lost academic skills from the previous school year if students don't practice educational skills throughout the summer.According to United Way, parents can help students avoid the summer slide with six books over the summer months, or 20 minutes a day of reading. Need some books? To improve readings skills, United Way launched its Summer Slide Book Drive in 2016 and donors in the community have helped distribute 32,000 age-appropriate books to students throughout Erie County. How to participate as a donor: Drop off new books appropriate for children grades Kindergarten through eighth grade to United Way of Erie County offices by Friday, May 24. Summer activities for all abilities By Jennifer Smith
Everyone anticipates summer. But when you have a child with special needs, sometimes that anticipation isn’t 100 percent joyful. Finding summer activities isn’t as easy as just walking out the door. Luckily there are a number of community organizations that understand how to make activities more successful for children with unique physical, medical or emotional needs. So go ahead, be a kid … explore, have fun outside, play a sport, learn a new skill, make music, or hang out with friends. Be fit, have fun There are so many benefits to being active — mental, physical and
social. But being part of a group can sometimes be overwhelming for those with special needs. Others might need a little extra time or hands-on help to master a skill. The Full Spectrum Fitness Club, which started this spring, is helping teens and adults build their bodies and new friendships. The program is a collaboration between the Autism Society of Northwestern Pennsylvania and Erie Sports Now Fitness and Performance. It meets Sunday afternoons in the new Erie Bank Sports Park. Cost is $15 for an 8-week session. The hour-long sessions begin and end with a team huddle, and also include warmup, strength training, cardio, games and challenges. Each participant receives one-onone guidance from Tyler Travis, a certified exercise physiologist and

Other volunteers include Andrew Nowak, a local attorney and avid runner who founded the program, and Kameron Landers, a director with the Autism Society of NWPA. “Our family salutes this program,” said Diane Baer, whose son Cameron participated in the first session offered this spring. “This program has been a much-needed fitness option for young adults on the spectrum. Communication challenges make fitness instruction a daunting task for the coach and the individual. Coach Tyler and his assistant coaches are well trained and provide simple instructions with verbal cues and visual modeling that make the exercises easy to learn and complete.” Beast on the Bay Did you know children and adults ages 12 and up with special needs can compete in the Beast on the Bay? A paved, one-mile adapted course offers 15 obstacles that involve pushing, pulling and going over metal and wooden ramps. Choose as many as you like to complete. Buddies are welcome to join participants for free — and if you don’t have one they’ll help

Kids have fun and learn at day camps By Marissa Orbanek
Summer doesn’t need to mean that the enrichment ends. Rather, there are a variety of day camps to keep children engaged and learning through the summer months. A number of options in the Erie area foster creativity, independence and critical thinking— and the list includes options for every interest. Here are some of the various summer options available in the Erie area: Eco Explorer Camp Eco Explorer Camp is a week-long summer day camp that focuses on outdoor exploration and connection, outdoor stewardship and appreciation, and engaging environmental lessons with a purpose. During land week, for example, students will engage in service learning projects such as park cleanups, tree tending and a waste audit with the Erie Seawolves; activities such as a career exploration day, trail walks, bike riding, and exploration and visitation of locations such as Presque Isle State Park, Blasco Memorial Library Teen Space, and various urban parks and outdoor spaces throughout Erie County. Ages: 11–15 Camp Dates: June 10–Aug. 16, no camp the week of July 1 Time: 9 a.m.–3:30 p.m. Location: Every day starts and ends at Tom Ridge Environmental Center, 301 Peninsula Drive Cost: $125/student/week; $325/ student/three-week land, air, water series (do not need to attend consecutive weeks); sibling discounts available. Summer camp, particularly overnight camp, is an experience that few children forget. Fun mixed with a little adventure and freedom is the perfect recipe for mental and emotional growth for kids taking their first steps toward independence. Every child is different so it's hard to say at what age kids are ready for their first sleepaway experience. Some children may be ready as young as 8 or 10; others may not be ready until their tweens or teens. If you’re sending your child to overnight camp this year, here are a few tips to help them prepare and to decide if they're really ready for a resident camp experience. Do a trial run: If your child 12

has never slept away from home, start by having them sleep at a friend or relative's house for a weekend first. Go small: Sign up for a single overnight or a two- or threeday camp experience first. Get a preview: Most resident camps offer an open house in the spring. Go together and check it out. Camp together: Many camps offer a child-andparent weekend or overnight experience. Get them involved: Let kids help pack and purchase items needed for camp. Prepare kids to unplug: Electronics, including cell phones, are not permitted at most camps. Some camps allow kids to bring cell phones but restrict usage or require
they be left in the camp office. Make sure kids know the rules so they aren't surprised when they arrive. Send email from home: Many camps offer one-way email service. You can write to kids, and counselors will print and deliver emails to campers daily. Be aware that few camps allow kids to email you back. Recruit a friend: Kids feel better when they have a friend attend camp with them. Most camps take requests for bunkmates. Homesickness help: Camp counselors are trained and experienced at dealing with homesickness and providing the support and comfort children need to work through the adjustment.

Hoping to introduce your child to a new sport? Sometimes the best way to do that is through a summer camp. In Erie, there is no shortage of camp options. Several of the local colleges, including Edinboro University, Gannon University and Penn State Behrend, all offer a slew of options throughout the summer. For the younger participants, this is often the perfect way to introduce him or her to the sport. “Our camps really focus on the basics, and as parents, you want to introduce your children to as many sports as possible,” said Brian Streeter, senior director of athletics at Penn State Behrend. “So, one of the nice things is that

you can try a lot of these camps to find what you like.” That’s where something like a Little Dribblers camp, offered to children as young as 4, can be so helpful. However, there are also options for more experienced athletes. Gannon University offers camps in several sports geared toward helping prepare athletes who hope to eventually play their sport in college. For those interested in trying as many sports as possible, one of the best options is Erie Premier Sports’ Multi-Sport Camp. “Movie: The Next Three Days”
Oscar winner Paul Haggis (“Crash”) directed this solid 2010 actioner about a couple (Russell Crowe, Elizabeth Banks) whose life is turned upside-down when the wife is accused of murder. Irvine brings the truth and takes the abuse in Season 14 of ‘Restaurant: Impossible’ Note to restaurant owners: If Robert Irvine is in your establishment, make sure your host is attentive and your bathrooms are clean. Those are the first things he notices. “The bathrooms should be as clean as your kitchen ...,” the British-born chef, restaurateur and host of Food Network’s “Restaurant: Impossible” explains. “It sets the tone for the restaurant – the way the cooks look, the way the servers look, the

way they talk to you, the way the host is when you walk in the door. Is she chewing gum? Is she on the phone? You know, all these things that when you’re in a public service – and a restaurant is a public service – from the moment you walk up to this place, the host is the first person you see
and the last person you see. And I rarely get met with somebody who’s not chewing gum, which drives me crazy by the way.” Now back and in its 14th season after a three-year hiatus, the Saturday series finds Irvine returning for more adventures in rescuing failing eateries, helping frazzled restaurateurs in California and Arizona fix issues with their food, cleanliness, management, leadership and attitude in the span of 48 hours and with a budget of $10,000. And while Irvine was reluctant to get into specifics about the individual cases this season, he will admit that viewers will see a lot of heightened emotion as people who are in danger of losing their homes, health and even families vent their frustrations and sometimes abuse on Irvine, who knows to not take it personally. “All I do is listen,” he says. “It’s no good me getting agitated at them because they’re in the fearful position of losing X amount

You know, when you go in and start judging their food, their management, their leadership, the cleanliness on top of what they’re going through in a different light than their own, they don’t like it.” One owner this season was a particularly tough nut to crack. “It took me and her husband more so than me, to talk her off the ledge and say, ‘Listen, you want help? You’re half a million dollars in debt. What are we going to do?’ And I said to her husband, ‘Hey, if I walk out of here, what’s going to happen with your restaurant?’ And he said, ‘Well, it closes and that’s it.’ So then she kind of agreed reluctantly until another six hours later (when) she became really calm and then started to listen.”
