Meet the Darlington consultant who transports supplies to Ukraine, weekly A consultant at Woodlands Hospital, Darlington, has teamed up with his hospital operator to deliver over 110 tonnes of urgent medical supplies to Ukraine.

The supplies that are delivered to these major hospitals will be distributed by them to community hospitals and medical sites, and so on.

Sergey Tadtayev, a native of Ukraine, is aiming to deliver 10-truck loads of medical kit to his homeland, donated from across the Circle Health Group’s national network of hospitals.

Teams of volunteers from the UK, Poland and Ukraine have been making the journey from Darlington on a weekly basis since March 15th. They have navigated war-torn regions and areas of conflict to reach their destinations: Kyiv, Kharkiv, Mykoliav, Odessa and Lviv.

What help has Dr Tadtayev provided? Commending the bravery of the volunteers Following direct requests from Ukrainian doctors, Woodlands Hospital has worked with the Ukrainian doctors union, Ukraine Medical Association and the British Red Cross to identify and send aid to war-hit hospitals. Medical supplies such as ventilators, crutches, walking frames, masks and scrubs, wound kits and operating tables have been stockpiled from Circle hospitals around the country. The supplies were then delivered directly to five hospitals covering the Nor th, South, East and West of Ukraine.

6

Dr Tadtayev has commented on the bravery of his comrades in his homeland, calling them heroic and praising them for continuing to care for the sick and wounded, even during bombing. He has also expressed his gratitude to his colleagues who have shown so much generosity in their donations, as well as to the people across the country who have selflessly donated their time, money and even put themselves at personal risk.

Keighley I

completed a job in Keighley (pronounced Keethly) in West Yorkshire earlier than expected and had several hours to explore the town which I have visited several times before. I was free to wander until 1901 when my train left for Leeds. Then it was over the bridge to join a CrossCountry train to Durham, my TransPennine connection having been cancelled owing to a shortage of train drivers. No matter: all the money back under Delay Repay!

The station at Keighley is well located for visits. First, a walk north of the town for Cliffe Castle Museum and Park. This was originally the home of Victorian millionaire and textile manufacturer Henry Issac Butterfield. The house was completed in the 1880s and was a showpiece of international art and French decoration. Sir Bracewell Smith, then Lord Mayor of London, bought the Castle in the 1950s and turned the gardens into a grand public park and remodelled the Castle to be a free museum for the people of the district. Zero expenditure except for a voluntary donation. Walking back into town, one can admire the impressive war memorial, and in the corner of the park is a new memorial to Captain Sir Tom Moore, born in the town where he attended the Grammar School before joining the army. He was created a Freeman of the town even though he lived in Bedford in later life.

14

I was unsure if the National Trust’s East Riddlesden Hall, a fine 17th century country Manor House, would be open, but

it was only five bus stops away (on the useful Shuttle 662 bus towards Bradford) from the station to find out. Now open Saturday to Wednesday, I discovered, there was a wedding party in full swing on the Thursday afternoon and it would have to wait for another time. As luck would have it I arrived back at Keighley ten minutes before the last round trip to Oxenhope on the heritage line, Keighley and Worth Valley Railway. Being school holidays, it was Timetable A in operation, the most frequent, with both steam and diesel traction in use. Most heritage railways now use this system, shown on the photo with different time tables depending on likely demand and availability of volunteers. K&WVR has six separate timetables linked to a calendar of their operating season. I bought a ticket for £13.50 (concessions were available) and travelled the five mile length of the line, stopping at Oakworth station which became famous through the 1970 film The Railway Children. Do you remember at the end Jenny Agutter crying out “Daddy, my Daddy!”? Then on to Oxenhope for an ice cream and back calling at all six stations. Finally, only 100 yards from the station I found Keighley’s top rated Indian Restaurant, the Curry House. Whilst not particularly imaginative in name, the food, and accompanying Kingfisher beer, was first rate so from going in at 1745 to leaving ten minutes before my train, I was royally treated, which is why I fell asleep on the train to Leeds, and had to be woken up by the train conductor.

Getting to know:

Anthony, Director of Manfield Wealth Management Ltd

Have you considered where you savings are now, or could be in 5 years' time and is it time to make your money work harder for you? Are your existing investments currently on track to meet your future plans, or do they need a change of management? Will your family inherit your full estate after your death or could part of your savings be given to tax?

Anthony Sowerby | Director Manfield Wealth Management Ltd

Manfield Wealth Management Ltd is a friendly local firm offering independent financial advice on all aspects of new investment, managing existing portfolios and inheritance tax mitigation with over 24 years of experience. You can save regularly too if its more convenient and shelter your savings from unnecessary taxation. Why not send me an email at anthony@manfieldwealth.co.uk or give me a call on 01325 461269/07738 375 448 to arrange a meeting, either in person or virtually if you prefer. A face-to-face meeting can be at your home, place of work. Any initial consultation is free of charge and obligation. Get to know us better and we can help you and your savings on a successful journey together. Before considering any investment outside of cash, please read and bear in mind the following statements for you attention. Manfield Wealth Management Ltd is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority offering independent financial advice FCA number 923347. Company number 12217582, company address Regus House, 4 Admiral Way, Doxford International Business Park, Sunderland SR3 3XW. The Financial Conduct Authority does not regulate taxation and trust advice. Capital is at risk when investing and the value of your investments can go down as well as up, meaning you may get back less than you invest. Past financial performance of investments is not a guide or guarantee to future returns.

What is your favourite part of the job? Definitely meeting the clients, people are interesting and the time passes quickly. At meetings I’ll obtain an understanding of the person I’m helping. I listen to their ‘phrases’, their experiences and viewpoints and their aims become much clearer. Can you tell us the most important thing you’ve learned since starting the business? ‘Client is king’; follow up enquiries timely; deliver what you’ve promised (and consequently don’t promise anything you can’t achieve); ensure the client understands everything and work for their benefit as a priority. Why should people seek independent financial advice, over a different type of investment adviser? It’s about suitability. Greater choice creates a more suitable option, based on a client’s requirements. Some 16

clients are ‘cost-conscious’ others need a higher return, some need a lower risk and so on. An independent adviser can ‘tailor’ an investment and isn’t restricted. How did you decide to become a financial adviser? I can’t say I always wanted to do this job! I had an interest in shares from my late teens and bought a few myself - I was a bit ‘geeky’ I suppose. I’m more a ‘people person’ and combining the interest in investing with this, created a natural role in financial advice. How does working for yourself compare to working in the corporate world? It’s really a personal choice, freedom is greater but then so is responsibility. There are benefits to both of course and it can be more difficult to ‘switch off ’. You’re more accountable, so you take more care in my view. I feel ‘motivated’ to work compared to being ‘told to’.

Ghostly goings on and industry awards at the

UK’s no 1 Gin Distillery. The Little Quaker Distillery in Clarks Yard Darlington have been named UK Gin Distillery of the Year in the Corporate LiveWire Global awards. The Corporate LiveWire Global Awards celebrates the recent success and continued achievements of businesses and individuals across a wide range of sectors and industries whilst also addressing some of the most pertinent issues facing key sectors today. Over the past year 24,268 nominations were received by the awards team at Corporate LiveWire from 32 countries around the world. Winners were chosen for innovation, ethical practice, industry recognition, and most importantly service excellence. Awards Director, Andrew White, commented: ““It is fantastic to see yet another year of progression and success throughout the corporate industry. The Little Quaker Distillery have shown a great improvement over the past year and together have created a great brand. We commend all the winners and I look forward to seeing their future developments.” Around the same time as the distillery was winning the best distillery award they also won Gold and Silver at the London Spirits competition one of the leading contests in the

20

spirit world with their Black Diamond Banana Rum winning Gold and finishing as the highest ranked rum in the entire competition. ‘We sometimes almost take for granted just how well we’ve done considering we’ve been working full time whilst growing the business organically smiles owners Paul and Leanne Colman. Indeed in the last month Quaker Gin original and Old Tom editions have been competing in the European Spirits Challenge where they won Gold and Silver respectively making the original Quaker Gin a three time Gold medal winner. This now means the Darlington Distillery have won 12 industry awards making them one of the most decorated distilleries in the country. What next for the distillery, Paul and Leanne talk with enthusiasm about what comes next for them in the Spirit world. Paul Said ‘Our Gin tastings are so popular and we will be expanding them to include our Rum collection. On top of this the team at Little Quaker have been conducting Ghost hunts in the distillery with The Spectre Detectors a local group who conduct paranormal investigations and the results have been staggering. We have two resident ghosts and old gentleman called George who likes to watch us distilling and a little mischievous girl called Connie who likes to take pictures off our walls and hide things “we chat about this during the gin tastings and we are working on a ghostly gin” said Leanne. For purchases pop into the shop in Clarks Yard every Friday and Saturday, for Gin tastings email the team on info@littlequakerdistillery.co.uk or again pop into the shop. Celebrating 100 editions of Darlington Monthly, with some of our amazing advertisers! In January 2014, Timber by Pitbull (feat Ke$ha) was playing in our speakers, David Cameron was the Prime Minister and the first edition of Darlington Monthly was published!

some of that to appearing in the magazine month after month. I hope we can continue this relationship for another 100 editions. - J Mitchell Roofing

Over the years, some incredible things have happened in our little town and across the county. In fact, in 2016, we had an Olympian in our patch. Amy Tinkler, from Bishop Auckland, was part of Team GB for the 2016 Summer Olympic Games, in Rio de Janeiro, coming home with a bronze medal in floor exercise.

Operating within the town for over 8 years now, means that we have built up some amazing relationships with local businesses, especially our long term advertisers. In fact, some even say that’s why they have stayed with us for so long:

Darlington continues to be a hub for creativity, diversity and inclusion. As we have reported over the years, huge changes are coming to our town’s infrastructure, to help our people and businesses to advance beyond any means they thought possible. We like to think that our ad magazine has contributed to this, and some of our advertisers seem to think that too: “I’d like to extend my thanks to the Darlington Monthly team, for all of their hard work over the years. My business is booming, and I have to credit

“We have an amazing relationship with everyone on the Darlington Monthly team. Nothing is too much trouble, and we truly have seen some amazing results, just by advertising in the mag. Highly recommend it to anyone thinking of giving it a chance!” - Stephen Capsey Plumbing & Heating We can’t wait to bring out another 100 editions of our magazine. It brings us a great deal of happiness to report on all of the good news in Darlington, as well as give local businesses the platform they need and deserve to promote their business to the people who need to see it!

DON’T STOP BELIEVIN’ The End-of-Night Anthems Show Saturday, August 6th 2022 CELEBRATING THE 40th ANNIVERSARY OF MULTI-MILLON-SELLING HIT EYE OF THE TIGER...

DON’T STOP BELIEVIN ROARS INTO TOWN This month, celebrating the 40th anniversary of the biggest hit single of the Eighties ‘Eye of the Tiger’ the brand-new stage show Don’t Stop Believin’ roars into town. Created by Entertainers in the same company that has entertained more than 20 million UK theatregoers in the past 17 years with shows like Lost in Music, Fastlove, The Rocket Man, The Magic of Motown, Radio Gaga and Thank You for the Music ‘ this time the production team celebrates ‘end-of-night anthems’. ‘It’s the all-new, feel-good show of the year guarantying a crazy, crazy night of non-stop, singalong favourites,’ says Entertainers director James Taylor. And this time, live on stage, the music of Bryan Adams, Blondie, Cher, Rainbow, Bon Jovi, Kate Bush, Starship, Europe, Belinda Carlisle and more is brought to life. Songs featured include Summer of ‘69, I Love Rock ’n’ Roll, Livin’ on a Prayer, Sweet Child O’ Mine, China in Your Hand, You Shook Me All Night Long, Sweet Home Alabama and many more ‘ with a

special place reserved for Survivor’s platinum-selling Eye of the Tiger. Released on May 31, 1982, the song was the theme tune to the Rocky III film, and went straight to number one in the UK charts. Specially written for the film, it was written and recorded at the request of the film’s star and director Sylvester Stallone, after being denied use of Queen’s Another One Bites the Dust on the film. ‘Like all songs featured in Don’t Stop Believin’, Eye of the Tiger has stood the test of time,’ says James, ‘and is just one of 30 of the massive anthems featured. The set list bristles with songs we’ve all partied to at the end of unforgettable party nights out in the past. ‘Production values are key, with each hit brought to life in full colour with a sizzling cast, fantastic costumes, and amazing light show. ‘It is brought to you by Entertainers, for people who love shows, by people who love shows.’ The end-of-night-anthems show is now touring the nation and advises theatre fans that love to party to ‘hold on to the feeling and Don’t Stop Believin’.

Welcome to BRASS, 10th to 17th July 2022 Our eclectic, vibrant and colourful celebration of brass music in all its forms – artistically excellent, rooted in our communities, and welcoming to everyone. Taking inspiration from the brass band heritage of County Durham, the festival weaves together all musical genres into a vibrant and entertaining ten-day festival taking place across the County. With headline performances in iconic locations from some of the UK’s finest artists, to school gigs, and an inclusive engagement programme, we are ready to celebrate with BRASS. BRASS is a key part of Durham County Council’s festivals and events programme and reflects the local authority’s commitment to cultural-led regeneration. As well as boosting the economy and raising the county’s reputation as a cultural destination, BRASS aims to bring communities together to create unforgettable experiences for people of all ages. We can’t wait to welcome you.

36

This year’s line-up includes: • Richard Hawley with Nasuwt Riverside Band • Lyr with Easington Colliery Band • Yolanda Brown • Ibibio Sound Machine • Field Music with Nasuwt Riverside Band • Black Dyke Band • Ben Lunn • Old Dirty Brasstards Visit our website www.brassfestival.co.uk to find out more and book tickets. Brass in Schools Each year the BRASS Festival works with around 15,000 children and young people through its community and education programmes. Schools love to welcome our bands, who play mini-gigs or engage the children in workshops. Some of the country’s best Street Bands will all be taking their skills to schools throughout Durham and sharing the BRASS-love with our young people. Care Homes We very much want BRASS to give something back to those who may have had a particularly tough few years. So, we are taking some of our performers to do special performances at care homes throughout the County. Performing outdoors, this is our way of bringing a little warmth and reminiscence to some of our older residents.

REVIEW

CINEMA DARLINGTON

The Lost City stars Sandra Bullock as a best-selling romance-adventure author, Loretta Sage, who has lost her spark, spending her days fantasising about the exotic places that she brings to life in her novels. Whilst promoting her new book with the loveable frat boy cover model Alan, played by Channing Tatum, Loretta is kidnapped, leading to a bizarre adventure that was once only possible as a figment of her imagination. One of the highlights of this film has to be its all star cast, with supporting roles for Brad Pitt, Oscar Nuñez, Da'Vine Joy Randolph, Patti Harrison, and a cameo from the hilarious Saturday Night Live cast member Bowen Yang.

FILM

Georgia Paskell Copywriter

Unfortunately, what it makes up for in laughs and witty jokes, The Lost City lacks in drive and plot. Though it is, admittedly, quite a short film, it could probably have been condensed down to a TV movie, rather than a feature length film. The plot itself is quite predictable in places, which leaves the conclusion a tad anticlimactic.

Most importantly is the role of Daniel Radcliffe, who plays our ‘Big Bad’ of the film, Abigail Fairfax (it’s gender neutral, guys - he promises!). Far from his Harry Potter days, Radcliffe channels his inner Draco Malfoy, as he attempts to gain the unattainable love of his father, causing chaos and drama wherever he goes.

The same can be said for the romance at play during the film, which is an amalgamation of all the tropes in the book. Interestingly, though, it does riff off one of the biggest action tropes extremely well, in fact, turning it on its head to present us with a female knight in shining armour, and a male damsel in distress. Though it is played for comedic purposes rather than as a feminist statement, it is nevertheless a charming quirk of the film.

The script is packed full of witty one liners, slapstick humour, childish behaviour, and deadpan jokes. It doesn’t take itself too seriously, making fun of itself, and of the action-romance genre in general. Indeed, despite not being full of belly laughs, it will have you snorting and sniggering for the duration of the film.

Overall, The Lost City makes for lighthearted, easy watching, and is entertaining from start to finish. Though it won’t have you totally laughing out loud, it will definitely have you chuckling throughout, and singing along to the impeccable soundtrack. It is the perfect film for lazy, rainy days, guaranteed to make you feel lighter and brighter by the end.
