Confidence keeps building THE DAIRY industry continues to build confi-

dence, with water storages full and timely rainfall throughout autumn resulting in excellent seasonal conditions across the region. The region has been in the spotlight when it comes to showcasing local farming operations, practices and research projects, with recent events hosted by Murray Dairy and Dairy Australia. First was Dairy Australia’s Raising the Roof event at Echuca on May 10 and 11. An enthusiastic crowd of farmers descended from across Australia to take up the opportunity to hear first-hand the way farmers have shaped their farming systems in the Murray region. Fellow Murray Dairy board member Tom Acocks was one of several presenters to share details around his farming operation at Rochester. All farms visited were fantastic, with farmers openly sharing their thoughts on all stages of feeding operations — from planning through to ensuring you have a solid feedbase of both quality and quantity, prior to considering development.

On May 18 and 19, Murray Dairy held its flagship event — the Murray Muster — at Yarrawonga. The theme this year, Focus on Feedbase, highlighted the importance of quality forage production. It was fantastic to hear an update on Murray Dairy’s Fodder for the Future research project, with a video taking event attendees through the year one results update. The detailed video explained the cross-sector work being done by the grains and dairy industries to investigate methods to help communities within the southern Murray-Darling Basin adapt to a water-limited future A particular highlight was the farmer panel, which covered a range of aspects from growing, to timely and effective harvesting to minimise feed wastage. Discussions centred around maximising fodder, which included beneficial examples of building long-term relationships with crop growers. The event showcased a number of experienced speakers, including agricultural sustainability advocate Dr Anika Molesworth, food and nutrition scientist Dr Anneline Padayachee and

independent management specialist Dr Nollaig Heffernan. It was an opportunity for the local dairying community to join together and network, share ideas and hear from a number of skilled experts. Attendees also had the opportunity to link into Alice and Justin Colclough’s Focus Farm open day at Talangatta South. Congratulations to the hard work of the Murray Dairy team to deliver this industry event. (Read more about the event in the following pages.) In other news, Murray Dairy is looking to recruit a specialist skills director position with a further option to recruit a second specialist skills director in a co-opted position, with both positions set to commence in October. Applications close July 5, with recruitment overseen by an independent selection committee. Further details can be found on the Murray Dairy website: www.dairyaustralia.com. au/murray-dairy

Trial seeks the best fodder A CROSS-SECTOR partnership project

between the dairy and grain industries is working to identify region-specific, best winter cropping practices across southern NSW and northern Victoria to assist communities within the southern Murray-Darling Basin adapt to a water-limited future. Murray Dairy has partnered with six local organisations to deliver the Fodder for the Future Project. The two-year, $1.6 million collaboration — funded by the Federal Government under the Murray-Darling Basin Economic Development Program — is designed to support the development of complementary farming systems that optimise the use of both irrigated and dryland resources across the region. As part of the project, trial and demonstration sites are currently being undertaken by Agriculture Victoria at Tatura, Birchip Cropping Group at Mitiamo, the Irrigated Cropping Council at Kerang, University of Melbourne at Dookie, Southern Growers at Finley and Riverine Plains near Rutherglen, with a year one results update recently published. Each trial site demonstrates a range of crop varieties and management strategies to increase yield and quality of hay and silage specifically for use in dairy cow diets. Sites are targeted at dairy farmers who conserve their own fodder as well as grain and hay producers that supply fodder into the dairy market. A key part of the project is also to develop long-term relationships between the hay and dairy industries. Communication and information sharing helps both ends of the feed supply chain increase risk management, diversify income and increase resilience in business management, as well as produce quality feed and milk.

Murray Dairy has partnered with six local organisations to deliver the Fodder for the Future Project, which is designed to support the development of complementary farming systems that optimise the use of both irrigated and dryland resources across the region.

The results from this project are looking to vindicate anecdotal knowledge from the local dairy community. For example, there have been claims made that smaller cereal stem diameter is conducive to better quality. However, year one trials indicate that this may not be the case. While these results are only preliminary and need to be replicated over varying seasons for

validity, findings like this may encourage farmers to spend more time, energy and — potentially — resources on other techniques, that will in fact increase feed quality (or yield) rather than those that won’t. In 2022, the trial protocols have been refined and more data gathered to validate initial learning. The final results from the project will be made available in 2023.

This project is part of a broader focus by Murray Dairy to increase locally developed and regionally relevant information to support farmers and service providers develop production systems specifically suited to growing conditions within the southern MurrayDarling Basin. More, page 4

MURRAY REGION // 3

Bringing farmers together THE NORTHERN Victorian and southern

NSW dairying community converged along the border at Yarrawonga for an enthralling two-day deep dive into feedbase at the Murray Muster on May 18 and 19. This year’s theme, Focus on Feedbase, highlighted an extensive range of information and ideas to support farmers in the Murray Dairy region improve the performance of their forage production. Dr Anika Molesworth started day one events with an enlightening presentation on agricultural sustainability, delving into an insightful Q&A with attendees around climate and stewardship. The conference also heard Bureau of Meteorology’s Stephanie Dickson discuss changing climate models in the Riverina/Murray Irrigation District, while James Murray explained profitable rotations to support dairy systems. Murray Dairy was particularly excited to share a video update on the Fodder for the Future research project. The project is a cross-sector partnership project by the dairy and grains industries to investigate ways to support the development of complementary farming systems that optimise the use of both irrigated and dryland resources across the southern Murray-Darling Basin. It is funded by the Federal Government under the Murray-Darling Basin Economic Development

Program and has another year of results to monitor. To supplement the video update, a farmer panel including Murray Dairy board member Tom Acocks, Andrew Kath, John Eade and Scott Rathbone shared valuable views around maximising farmer and fodder producer communications to achieve best outcomes, including strengthening seasonal risk management and producing an optimal product. Alternative methods on how payment can be made to strengthen cross-sector business relationships was another takeaway

discussion point. After an informative day, attendees regrouped for the Murray Muster Industry Dinner. This was a chance for the industry to connect and network, as well as hear Dr Anneline Padayachee, the ‘Food and Nutrition Scientist’, delve into an impressive presentation on human nutrition trends. Independent management consultant Dr Nollaig Heffernan led attendees into day two of the event, beginning with a highly informative breakfast presentation on leadership, communication and persuasion before the event moved

from presentations to the paddock. More than 70 people linked into a tour of Alice and Justin Colclough’s Focus Farm at Tallangatta South. Here the Colcloughs introduced their farm and spoke to the autumn start, investment plans, focus on challenges and opportunities. The event was a strong display of the local dairy community joining together to share ideas, celebrate success, make connections and learn the latest in research and development.

FINDING THE COURAGE TO CHANGE own family farm was facing a crisis. “A drought is a cruel beast, and it was living through a 10-year drought on my family’s farm that ignited my concern about climate change,” she said. “From then I wondered, how are we going to feed a rapidly growing global population well, in a climate-challenged world?” She encouraged her audience to think about a place where they had a deep attachment and she described her own relationship with the land. She was in awe of the landscape, as a child, learning about respect for the land. “What a privilege to be a food producer, working with nature,’’ she said. “Imagine my heartache when I began to question whether that future was possible, because the land I fell in love with, as a child, began to change before my eyes.”

grow courage to overcome the challenges that we face and to tell our stories in a way that is honest, authentic, inspires hope and action,” Ms Molesworth said. “Although our stories might look different there are commonalities. We are working to solve complex problems. “We understand the enormity of the challenges and unique obstacles. We are here because we love our land, our communities and our livestock. And we are problem-solvers. “We believe there is a better way of doing our things.’’ Ms Molesworth invited farmers to embrace courage to change the system, courage to create a just and fair food system, and courage to face the problems. Describing herself as a farmer and storyteller, she was propelled into advocacy for the environment when her

Murray Muster attendees heard from a young farmer, an author and a scientist, described as a “thought leader” on climate change, who lives on a farm in western NSW and drives an electric car. A former Farmer of the Year, Anika Molesworth set the tone for a challenging day when she talked about how the conference had something in common with her story. She wanted to discuss where she had come from and where the future was headed. Ms Molesworth was interested in the nexus between planetary health, plants and animals, climate change and ecosystems and how that interacts with people and communities. Her talk was called ‘Cultivating Climate Courage’. “We are living in a time when we need to

Anika Molesworth at the Murray Muster held at Yarrawonga.

The farmers attending the conference were left with some challenges to consider, not the least being how to introduce environmentally friendly changes on their farm and how to move towards a low carbon future.

Feed feast at Murray Muster BY GEOFF ADAMS

MURRAY DAIRY has partnered with the grain

and fodder industries to deliver six winter forage demonstration sites across the northern Victoria and southern Riverina dairy areas as part of the Fodder for the Future Project. This is a two-year, $1.6 million project funded by the Federal Government under the MurrayDarling Basin Economic Development Program. Its aim is to support dairy businesses at a time when increasing numbers of farms have moved away from relying on perennial pastures and are now growing more winter and summer crops. Each of the six sites has run trials to demonstrate crop varieties and management strategies to increase yield and quality of hay and silage for dairy cows’ diets. The demonstration sites include trials on wheat, oats, barley, vetch and cereal as well as a look at something different, faba beans. The demonstration sites monitor sowing times, sowing rates, fertiliser application and harvest times to see the impact these strategies have on crop yield and quality. Muster attendees heard updates on trial outcomes. At Tatura, Agriculture Victoria sowed irrigated wheat. Results from the first year showed nitrogen rates and sowing affected tiller density

in wheat, with nitrogen application having the greatest impact. The Birchip Cropping Group trial at Mitiamo showed hay yields from certain varieties of oats were higher, while sowing date had no impact on yield or quality, and there were some yield responses to nitrogen, but none from potassium or phosphorous. The Irrigated Cropping Council winter trial site at Kerang found that manipulating stem diameter did not affect quality, but cutting time impacted yield in the cereal crops. The faba bean trial found that yield improved with later cutting times. The University of Melbourne trial at Dookie confirmed the trade-off between cutting time, yield and quality for cereal crops. Higher sowing rates led to smaller stem diameters, but did not translate to higher forage quality. At Finley, the trial found that one variety of vetch had better quality attributes than the woolly vetches. High sowing rates resulted in more plants established, but did not follow through to improvements in yield and quality. The Riverine Plains trial at Rutherglen (conducted in wet conditions) found that vetch struggled in wet conditions and was out-competed by oats.

About 90 people attended the Murray Muster held at Yarrawonga on May 18 and 19.

Nutrition is on milk’s side were 8.6 litres per person. Dr Padayachee, who holds a PhD in nutritional food science, said consumers had their own views about why they drink milk. For many consumers, milk is associated with breakfast cereals, a tea and coffee additive, and children. Consumers often choose milk alternatives such as almond milk because of a perceived association with a healthy lifestyle. But Dr Padayachee said milk had well-substantiated nutritional value, including good fats and great proteins. “Plant-based alternatives don’t really have the nutrients that milk has. They have to have ingredients added,” she said. “Just because it is plant-based does not mean they are nutritionally comparable.” Dr Padayachee acknowledged there was a need for non-dairy products, because there were some people who were lactose intolerant.

DAIRY FARMERS got a double

serving of their favourite beverage when an after dinner speaker left them with plenty of nutritional ideas to ruminate over. Nutritionist Anneline Padayachee addressed the farmers attending the Murray Muster and reassured the group that milk was going to remain a staple on Australian tables for a while to come. The food scientist was armed with information about the value of milk in diets and the status milk held in the market place. She was the focus of robust questioning from farmers throughout the evening. Dr Padayachee was able to address a topic common around the kitchen table on many farms the emergence of plant-based alternatives to milk. National statistics show dairy milk consumption per capita in Australia in 2021 was 97.3 litres, compared to alternatives, which

Nuffield impact still felt MERRIGUM DAIRY farmer Jamie Snell has

never been shy about verifying facts and wanting everything in order. As he and sonographer wife Anne enter generational change with son Michael and daughter-inlaw Jane, Jamie’s Gardiner Nuffield Scholarship experience in 2007 is holding him in good stead. “I’ve always had a natural curiosity and from the Nuffield I tend to question things a lot more and always tell people not to be scared to ask a question,” he said. Jamie’s Nuffield research centred on family farm succession, success in farm business and opportunities for new entrants. “If I was to re-write my report today, I suspect it would be significantly different but some of the fundamentals remain the same,” he said. “When I looked at the definition of succession planning, it’s basically plan, communicate, affirm, implement and then review and those topics are still relevant and you can flesh them out.” In what Jamie describes as generational change, Michael and Jane have taken on a sharefarming role and will have more opportunities to grow their stake in the herd and land. Michael and Jane are responsible for management of the farm and herd, while Jamie oversees the irrigating and cropping. His other children — Katherine, Xavier and Matt — have also been involved in the discussions. At 63, Jamie thinks a successful succession plan will give him time and capacity to

do what he wants while keeping a hand in the business. He also wants an opportunity to transfer knowledge and encourage the new generation to build good relationships with suppliers and bankers. “While I want to step back and slow down, I don’t want to let go of what I’ve got while I’m healthy enough to do it. “I see an opportunity to transfer knowledge and give an opportunity to grow equity and wealth. “While I still have ownership and some input into the business, if further opportunities arise to expand, we’ve got the ability to leverage the total amount of the business and my relationships. “Michael and Jane are aware they couldn’t afford to buy the business outright within a short time frame, and I couldn’t get the same return on investment if I had that money in the bank instead of in the farm and the cows, particularly in the last three years when the value of the farm and the cows has gone up so much.” Jamie is a strong believer that sharefarming is one of the best routes for getting a foothold in the industry. The Snell farm covers nearly 350 hectares and milks about 400 cows. It is well placed for change. “We’ve been able to expand, consolidate and put scale to the farm business, which is important if you’re going through generational change,” Michael said.

When Merrigum dairy farmer Jamie Snell undertook a Gardiner Nuffield Scholarship in 2007, he didn't know that it would still resonate 15 years later.

“Ultimately, we will see a change in the farm business and we have to plan for that.” Jamie has always encouraged young farmers and says those with questions on their mind should consider applying for a Nuffield scholarship. “Nuffield is a fantastic way to do research and it opens many doors,” he said. “I’ve sat in rooms with senior American and UK government bureaucrats, I’ve been at a function with Arnold Schwarzenegger, then I was out in the paddock with mud on my gumboots looking at irrigation in California with a contact I tracked down through Nuffield.” And the Nuffield experience still resonates.

“I had been heavily involved with agricultural politics before the Nuffield but I didn’t get involved afterwards because I felt more attached to bigger issues,” Jamie said. He sat on a government drought response group, was organising chairman of the Australian Dairy Conference and linked into European Dairyfarmers, opening more doors for contacts and hosting young people on his farm to share knowledge and give them a start in the industry. Applications for the 2023 Nuffield Farming Scholarship close on Friday, June 17. For more information about the Nuffield scholarship program, visit: nuffield.com.au

US buyer for best heifer BY DANEKA HILL

THIS YEAR’S Elmar Extravaganza 2.0 sale saw

cows sold into every single state in Australia, plus a few foreign countries. The top price was $20,000, which was paid by a United States buyer for heifer Elmar Chief Jessica 4697 ET. International interest in the stud’s sale also came from Pakistan, with several heifers purchased for those buyers. The sale average was $6045 across 72 lots. Elmar Holsteins stud principal Steven Hore said it was a very solid sale and he was pleased to see cows sold into Tasmania, NSW, Queensland, South Australia and Western Australia. A highlight of the sale was Lot 12. It’s not often a drawn out ‘awww’ is heard at a livestock auction, but Lot 12 melted a few hearts with her bombastic entrance. The four-month-old Holstein calf raced into the ring, did her best impersonation of a rodeo bull, tried to eat the decorative flowers, then promptly put her heels in the air and ran a few more laps. The calf — Elmar Dylan Jessica 4982 — ended up selling for $8500 to a Tasmanian buyer. Last year’s Elmar sale averaged $10,492 and achieved a top price of $46,500 due to the extreme demand for their genetics. This resulted in several nervous bidders at the ‘2.0’ sale on May 18, who declared themselves

Cousins Dylan McDonald and Michael Robertson made the trip from Gippsland. The pair knows the Hore family and was interested to see the set-up.

Lachlan Fry (left) from Brunswick in Western Australia came across the country to have a look, and a holiday. “The cattle are outstanding and the farm is a great set-up. This is one of the premiere herds in Australia,” he said. Mr Fry bought the embryo package for $1500 each. With him is Travis Gilmore (centre) from Durham Ox and Chad Gordon from Tongala.

“just looking” and “here for a sticky-beak” while clutching the sale booklet and hoping something appeared in their budget range. Geoff Behrens and Keith Den Houting were both onlookers at the sale. “You need to be young to invest in cattle now. The aim is like a share portfolio, you’re

looking to get 20 to 30 years of profit from them (cattle),” Geoff said. Keith said he attended last year and expected prices to remain very strong in the dairy industry given the milk price and seasonal conditions. Elmar Holsteins is near Leitchville in northern Victoria.

Lot 13, Elmar Solomon Jessica 8 VG88, sold for $9000.

Neighbouring dairy farmers Michelle Quinn and Kelly Hogan. “We’re just having a look. (Buying) will depend on my budget,” Mrs Quinn said. “We bought three at the last sale and they’re all very cool cows.” The Quinn family snapped up Lot 20 for $5000. The Elmar sale was the sort which attracted men in vests who walk around attached to their phones. Mark Collins from DLS was one. “I’m basically here for a look but I work for DLS in Mt Gambier. I’m taking pictures on my phone and sending it off to an online bidder back home.”

Lot 12 gains some air-time while she’s still young. The calf will be staying at Elmar Holsteins until she’s weaned and ready to make the trip to the Walters’ farm in Tasmania.

Cohuna farmer Millar Keith. “I used to milk years ago but I’m retired now. I’m here to look at the quality.”

Hunter Valley farmer Alwyn Vollmer made the drive down. “We couldn’t come over the border last year,” he said. “These cows are a bit out of our league but another reason we came was to see the barns and shed.” (Elmar Holsteins has moved away from pasture grazing to confinement housing.)

Persistency joins consistency YARROWEYAH DAIRY farmer Chris

For the past three years, Chris Hibberson has ranked number one in the Murray Dairy region in Dairy Australia’s Australian Milk Quality Awards, based on bulk milk cell count.

Hibberson has shown great consistency in winning gold milk quality awards over the past three years. Now he’s also getting persistency in his herd. For the past three years, Chris has ranked number one in the Murray Dairy region in Dairy Australia’s Australian Milk Quality Awards, based on bulk milk cell count. He attributes much of that success to his decade-long use of VikingGenetics and the health traits he has bred into his herd. Now things are getting even better, with VikingGenetics’ breeding value for persistency aiming to flatten lactation curves to improve health and reproduction outcomes. “I look for an all-rounder when I look for a bull,” Chris said. “I like them to have a bit of milk, good health traits and now persistency. “Persistency is a relatively new trait and I like that idea. I don’t like cows that dry off early and the Viking cows seem to persist, so I’ve been particularly happy with that.” Chris, with his wife Nicole and son Jonathan, milk 250 cows twice a day on an 80-hectare milking area just outside Cobram.

He has been on the farm since 2014 and hails from a strong dairying background, with his parents and five siblings all involved in the industry. His herd is 70 per cent Friesian and 30 per cent crossbreds, with Chris now using only Friesian bulls to boost his black and white numbers. This year he achieved a BMCC of 69, slightly above the previous 65 but still good enough to put him at the top of the tree in the Murray Dairy region. Chris said VikingGenetics was an important part of his farm’s success. “I’ve been using VikingGenetics for about 10 years. “I just decided to try it and I’ve been happy ever since, especially with the health traits.” The improvements over the past decade attest to this successful breeding program — the cell count is a lot better, production has gone up, fertility has been maintained, and hoof and teat health have improved. VikingGenetics’ Nordic evaluation records all clinical cases of mastitis, helping Chris to pick the right bull for his needs.

Healthy and profitable As Chris sees it, a healthy herd is a profitable herd.

THE DAIRY MINERAL SUPPLEMENT ADVANTAGE through Animal Mineral Solutions For the past 10 years we have made major advances in our • Less lameness through Zinc supplementation over the entire lactation nutrition program by incorporating AMS Dairy dry period which continues to keep hooves hardened Lick into the far-off dry cow period. Born calves then drink higher immunoglobulin concentration in colostrum. • Enhanced breeding rates from building healthier eggs long before they are needed, due to feeding the year-long mineral program.

MURRAY REGION // 11 While the breeding program is a proven success and Chris plans to continue on a similar path, he’s always looking for other management advantages to improve his outcomes. “I try to do something a bit different every year to keep my cell count down.” One of those changes has been the introduction of three calving periods — 45 per cent each in spring and autumn and 10 per cent in November. The change was made two years ago to fit in with processor needs, not because of any fertility problems. “Instead of carrying the cows through, I now join about 40 to calve in November to fit in with the payment system of our processors, ACM,” Chris said. Last year he added automatic cup removers, he has started herd testing and maintains a stringent teat spraying system. “I’m big on teat condition; I think that’s the main reason I have a low cell count. This year has been difficult with the mud but I’ve maintained good coverage with teat spray.” Teat sealing in the past two years has helped, particularly with mature cows. “The cows that come in fresh now don’t have much mastitis,” Chris said. “The old cows’ cell count is as good as the young cattle, which is helping to keep my number down.” Herd testing is a major contributor. If a cow has a high cell count a couple of times in a row, she is culled from the herd. “I’ve only got about 10 per cent above 100 cell count and I always aim to keep it low,” Chris said. He has no need for a separate sick herd.

Chris said the introduction of cell count figures on bulls had been good for the industry, helping all farmers to reduce their cell counts.

In a good space The farm is in a good space at the moment, Chris says. The shift towards more Friesians in the herd has resulted in a slight loss of components but that has been more than compensated for by the additional milk volume, with cows averaging about 580 kg of milk solids. “The last few years have been really good,” Chris said. “We’re pushing numbers up at the moment because of the good milk price.” While wondering what new innovations can be introduced to ensure his herd maintains its milk quality supremacy, Chris is proud of his achievements and keen to keep a low count. “We definitely strive for it. My brother Justin farms about 10 kilometres away and we work off each other … it’s a bit of a competition to keep the cell counts down.” Justin received a silver award this year. With an average herd age of about 4.5 years and Chris aiming for a cow about 600 kg but not over 700 kg, he is happy with his progress. “My aim is to keep milking cows until I can’t. I don’t do much different to other farmers; it’s more about knowing your cows. “Testing is important, but it’s also about observation. If you know your cows, if there’s anything wrong you pick it up early. “I definitely recommend VikingGenetics. I think I’m getting fussier but I’m always happy with Viking.”

His herd is 70 per cent Friesian and 30 per cent crossbreds, with Chris Hibberson now using only Friesian bulls to boost his black and white numbers.

“I’ve been using VikingGenetics for about 10 years,” Chris Hibberson says. “I just decided to try it and I’ve been happy ever since, especially with the health traits.” NEW SPRAYER APPLIC8R SPRAYER NEW APPLIC8R WITH EAGLETECH WITH EAGLETECH ON-BOARDON-BOARD

DAIRY NEWS AUSTRALIA JUNE 2022

12 // MURRAY REGION

Advice keeps family on farm THREE YEARS after almost walking away

from the dairy industry, Beverford farmers Neville and Julie Rogers are not just surviving but thriving — thanks to some well-timed help from Fonterra’s Farm Source team. It was a tough time for the Rogers, with the north-west Victorian farm held in the family’s hands for four generations. “My father and grandfather had both owned the property,” Julie said. “It was 96 acres (38 hectares) with a six-bay walk-in dairy when Dad sold the property. I was only 15 at the time but always wanted to buy it back one day.” The Rogers ran a nearby stockfeed mill before buying the farm in 2001. Since then, Neville and Julie, along with son Matthew, have grown the property to 141 ha of predominantly summer and winter pastures as well as a 1011 ha turn-out block. “We pretty much knocked down everything except for the dairy and started again, including new fences, new pipe-and-risers and a 44-stand rotary dairy,” Neville said. By 2018, however, the Rogers had hit a wall. “We were nearly ready to quit,” Neville said. “The drought had hit; water was dear. Things were pretty tough.” That’s when Fonterra area manager Kelly Mathers brought in Farm Source paddock

specialist Glenn Murrells and profit specialist Matt Trevaskis. “The farm had all the ingredients there,” Glenn said. “It was just a matter of putting everything together. “They needed to either make the decision to move out of the industry or grow the herd. “We ran scenarios to determine the best course of action and our initial planning identified a [cow] number that the feedbase, the land and the available labour could support. “We were looking to get as much as we possibly could out of the business. So, we recommended increasing the herd from 120 to 300.” After making that decision, Glenn changed the Rogers’ feed mix. “They were feeding straight grain in the dairy, and that doesn’t work for high-performance cows and doesn’t drive maximum production, so I formulated a canola mill-based additive,” Glenn said. “As a result, we’ve seen per cow production improve significantly, in-calf rates are much better, and production overall from the herd has increased significantly,” Neville said. He said Glenn also helped to manage his pasture better. “He swung me more into silage. I had never been a silage fan, but I’m starting to lean towards

it only because you can get your protein energy off your paddocks quicker. “Now, instead of being purely pasture-based, we’re using a mixing wagon and putting the cows on a pad in the evening. “The cattle are actually gaining weight, we’re getting more cows in-calf quicker, and the cows are a lot happier. We’ve gone from 750,000 litres to well over two million.” In addition to the improvement in production, the Rogers are now working with Farm Source to consolidate their future. “With the increased herd size and intensive planning they’re doing with Glenn, the business

is now in a much more secure position financially,” Matt said. “It’s given them the freedom to look at options as to whether they stay put or keep growing. Either option is perfectly fine for this farm.” In addition to the financial relief, it’s created a much happier atmosphere on the farm. “Neville and Julie were in a pretty bad place stress-wise, and you could see the strain,” Glenn said. “Now when we come up here everyone’s happy and smiling. You can see the business growing, and there’s a really solid future here.” Julie and Neville have become advocates for other farmers to use the expertise on offer from the Farm Source team. “They have been a fantastic help to us over the last three to four years, and they’re an integral part of our dairying operation now,” Neville said. “We’ve tripled our enterprise, we’re off and running again, and it looks like we’ll be sitting here for a little bit longer.” For Julie, it’s peace of mind that her family farm has the support needed to succeed. “If you have any issues, you can contact the team at any time,” she said. “Before Farm Source, we didn’t have this sort of thing available. They have set us up with all the support we need.”
