Introduction.

Welcome to the first edition of Candy, a (hopefully) new regular newsletter devised to showcase the best in Irish and international culture, creativity and God knows what else. Over the coming issues I’m sure this thing will evolve into something of worth so until then please bear with us. Actually, rather than wait, why not tell me what’s floating your boat at the moment or has you wet waiting and let’s put it in. If you’re up for it or have any comments or suggestions fire them through to richard.seabrooke@dynamo.ie and let’s get it on. Hope the following doesn’t bore you to death, maybe next time you’ll be on board. Richard

Roisin Murphy. Ex-Moloko lead singer who flys solo this Summer at Sonár in Barcelona.

Upfront.

Aidan Kelly.

I’ve been a fan of Aidan’s work for many a year, mostly by default though as he’s a longtime collaborator of the brilliant graphic designer Peter Reddy, aka Redman. If you’ve been in Dublin for the last 10 years you can’t have escaped this guy’s work as it adorns everything from flyers (POD, Choice Cuts, Electric City, etc.) to album covers (Turn, Gemma Hayes, etc.) and a lot more besides. Everyone else bought the soundtrack it seems, Aidan has the motion picture and stills.

Anyhoo, seems about time then that he got his own site up and running so get yourself round to www.aidan-kelly.com and you won’t be disappointed. The work is beautiful and the site works perfectly to show it off. Better still, you can buy limited edition prints off if so no more excuses for the flock wallpaper looking so bare. Also, watch out for future issues of Candy coz I got exclusive unseen images which are well worth waiting for... Just form an orderly queue.

Adidas.

In 1969 Adi Dassler designed the first Superstar (The ‘Shelltoe’) for the use of basketball players to better their game through better cushioning and added comfort. 35 years on and the Superstar is worn by all kinds of people all over the world, not just ball players. So what better way to celebrate this that enlist the talents of some of the world’s most recognised designers (Disney, Andy Warhol, Project Playground, Undefeated, etc.) and musicians (Run Dmc, Ian Brown, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Missy Elliot, etc.) to have had a crack (with some varying degrees of success) on 35 limited edition versions of one of the most enduring sports shoe designs of all time.

What’s more, why not get the Adidas fanatics to run the streets of 7 cities worldwide chasing golden tickets Willy Wonka style for the ultimate Superstar set, limited to 300 pairs worldwide To read more on the phenomenal underculture of Adidas and also this celebration check www.adidas.com/originals To see how much these limited editions are changing hands for check www.ebay.com (better bring a cheque book!)

Adidas.

Superstar Anniversary Edition Number 35 Limited to 300 pairs in the world these were given to the people who found the winning tickets after completing a treasure hunt around seven cities worldwide. The winner’s then were invited to gala events where they were given their presentation boxes.

Adidas.

Superstar Anniversary Edition Beastie Boys Edition This pair which was designed in association with The Beastie Boys never got produced, the districts of New York are detailed on the the stripes while details relating the group are stitched all over. These recently went up for charity auction on Ebay and fetched over £1,000, that’s about 400,000 Euro I think. Images courtesy of www.crookedtongues.com

Amos.

King Ken Grey. The original, there has also been an orange variant and also a rarer albino version. Summer 2005 sees a flock version released.

Amos Toys set up in 2002 with James Jarvis, Sofia Prantera and Russell Waterman. James had previously been illustrating for the likes of The Face magazine, the Holmes clothes label (from Slam City Skates) and The Idler aswell as designing toys and graphics for cult fashion brand Silas, beginning with the now legendary Martin figure, released back in 1998. Along with Bounty Hunter in Japan, Silas unwittingly became one of the pioneers of the soft vinyl designer toy revolution. Martin was unleashed on an unsuspecting world and the work of James Jarvis reached a whole new audience. For the following 5 years, Silas continued to pander to popular demand and release James' designs under both the Silas banner and as part of his World of Pain project. The Silas figures were Martin, Evil Martin and Bubba, Tattoo Me Keith and The Bearded Prophet. The WoP figures were the Policeman and Lars. All of these figures have become very collectable and some trade hands for exorbitant sums on eBay.

Because of the success of these figures, and to stop Mr. Jarvis selling his soul to The Man (he also produced the set of Juvenille Delinquents for the Sony Capsule Toy project), James and the two directors of Silas decided to create a new company. Amos was set up to independently produce and distribute James' figures; to take his work out of a "fashion" context and open up his designs to a wider audience; and to develop new projects and offer new opportunities to other artists whom they had worked with. So far Amos has released the successful In-Crowd series and King Ken, all designed by James. Future plans include a new James Jarvis project, beginning with the release of part one of a comic adventure titled 'Vortigern's Machine'. Also there are plans to release a comic and vinyl figures designed by Will Sweeney, another Silas collaborator. 'Tales from Green Fuzz' and Helmut the Hot Dog Man. Examples of all these follow on the following pages. There’s also plans for a flocked version of King Ken and the In-Crowd 10 will be an homage to wrestling but I ain’t got pics of them yet. For more informations visit www.amostoys.com http://homepage.mac.com/james.jarvis/index.htm and www.silasandmaria.com See the original Silas WoP toys at http://www.whywebshop.com/silas.htm Nokia Office Archetypes. Amos. New releases.

Left: Major Moulty's Amazing Magical Plastic Band.

Middle: Mr. Vortigern (2 variants)

Right: Tales from Greenfuzz presents Helmut The Hot Dog Man

MMAMPB were part of the second wave of the 1960's British Invasion. Unlike their contemporaries, Moulty's Psychedelic Pop music was in no way drug induced and they most definitely were not "Turned On". In fact, in their groundbreaking concept LP "The Thoroughly Interesting Life of Mr. Jones" they introduced the counter counter-culture phrase "Application, Concentration, Moderation"

A cutting edge study, chronicling a group of everyday kids who roam the suburban/semi-rural mean streets of a fictional town and are dramatically sucked into a psychedelic vortex of fantasy adventure. Their travels feature run-ins with a talking dog and an angry gorilla called King Ken, and they manage to answer one of life's modern philosophical conundrums in the process. All this and a slide machine. Stay tuned for the complete Vortigern's Machine comic by James Jarvis.

Will Sweeney is best-known for his work designing T-shirts for super-hip clothing line Silas as well as designs for Stussy, Gimme 5, Levi's and Beams in Japan. Now you can enjoy the travails of various food-based homunculi that dwell within the artist's distorted universe and figure out exactly what the deal is with Helmut the Hot Dog Man. Trippy.

Asbestos.

Over the last couple of years you may have noticed the emergence of a new art form on the streets of the world, including Dublin. Taking it’s sensibilities from graffiti ‘street art’ has become a valid and important form of expression of creativity. Leading the charge in Dublin are Asbestos and Frankenstyles (mentioned later). These two guys have taken the streets as their gallery space and worked within it accordingly.

Asbestos himself has gained worldwide notoriety for his Lost posters aswell as his other projects. He’s exhibited across the world, both officially and unofficially, and also is at the heart of the global community having recently devised a Christmas swap shop affair, where artists all over the world signed up to do a piece which then got sent to another artist picked at random by Asbestos. Check out the results of this project and also all the other amazing work at the deadly www.theartofasbestos.com

D.A.D.D.Y.

Forget your Dom&Nic’s, Spike Jonze’s and Shynola’s for a moment, it’s time to give some props to the Dublin based production powerhouse that is D.A.D.D.Y. (Design Animation Design Design Yay!) who do some of the best videos anywhere at the moment. Their attention to detail, original concepts and execution have to be seen and heard to be believed.

With amazing work for Bell X1, Autamata, David Kitt, Halite and their own music / performance project Warlords Of Pez already in the can aswell some amazing commercials you really shouldn’t be reading this but rather should be over at www.teamdaddy.com with some popcorn, M&Ms awaiting the feast of film sitting their waiting for your perusal. Also, watch out for the short films series on TV3 which they did the titles for aswell as featuring work, check www.tv3.ie for info. Roll on the DVD, the petition starts here.

Festivals.

Woohoo! Summer’s coming so grab the lotion, the ham sandwiches and the blanket, we’re going out into the countryside for lots of six packs, rugs and rock’n’rolling hills. Yep, the big gigs and festivals are acoming so best we plan in advance... With more choice than you can shake a big stick at, all aiming for your wallet, best you get organised, get down the Credit Union and get begging. Not only are U2 bringing the noise to Croker for 3, yes 3, nights but Coldplay come to Marlay Park, The Black Eyed Peas, Faithless and (ahem) Paddy Casey play Dublin Castle (Heineken Green Energy Festival) and Eminem and his Detroit crew roll in to rise some hassle at the castle at Slane. Add to these the 3 big festivals that roll into town over the coming months, all with line-ups to die for, it’s time to sell a kidney and get stuck in... Here’s to 5-0 for why we should go... Oh yeah, speaking of sun lotion, just thought I’d include Sonar in Barcelona and rub it in.

Oxegen. Punchestown. July 9th & 10th. www.oxegen.ie

Oxegen is the mother of all Irish festivals with a huge crowd, loads of stages, millions of bands and a whole ton of other stuff to do all being crammed into the Punchestown site for your enjoyment. It really doesn’t get bigger than this. And while size matters, style does too so rather than rest on their laurels this year sees an incredibly diverse line-up hit Kildare on the two days. A veritable feast of full-on festival frivolities, a buffet of brilliance, a menagerie of madness... okay, I’ll stop now. Get down there and, eh, get down!

Line-Up: Green Day / The Frames / The Prodigy / Snoop Dogg / Queens Of The Stone Age / Kaiser Chiefs / Ian Brown / Kasabian / Razorlight / Bloc Party / The Bravery / Foo Fighters / Keane / The Killers / Doves / New Order / The Streets / Jimmy Eat World / Audioslave / James Brown / The Beautiful South / Josh Ritter / Rodrigo y Gabriela / Erick Morillo / Mylo / 2 Lone Swordsmen / Slam / Black Strobe / Fish Go Deep & Tracey K / Brother J / Frank Jez / Hugh Scully / Deep Dish / LCD Sound System / Jacques Le Cont / Death in Vegas / Silicone Soul / Infadels / Nic Fanciulli / Brother J / Paul Taylor / Scott McNaughton / Al Gibbs / The Tears / Super Furry Animals / And millions more TBC

Electric Picnic. Stradbally House, Laois. September 3rd & 4th. www.electricpicnic.ie

Billed as ‘the boutique festival’ last year’s sell out saw 15,000 people descend on Stradbally House for a big day out filled with fun and frolics. Despite a few teething problems the gig was amazing. From the sun-drenched performances of Arrested Development, Super Furry Animals and Soulwax to the full-on frenzy that was Mylo, Eric Morillo and the local crews of Backlash and Bodytonic it was a big day out with a big headache the next morning. Oh, and Groove Armada were brilliant to ease you into the night! This year promises even more of the same with the site extended to hold 25,000 punters over two days, there’s even camping this year for those inclined. This year also sees the inclusion of a cinema, a larger food market and the premier of the ‘silent disco’, a concept launching at this year’s Glastonbury, where the festivalgoers get a pair of wireless headphones each which get sent live mixed music throughout the night. A brilliant concept considering the rules that concerts generally have to shutdown their soundsystems to reduce public noise pollution in the wee hours.

Line-Up: Kraftwerk / Fatboy Slim / Flaming Lips / Damien Dempsey / Arcade fire / Royskopp / Laurent Garnier / Stereo MC's / Mixmaster Mike / Toots & the Maytals / Amp Fiddler / Asian Dub Foundation / Backlash DJs / Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds / Mercury Rev / 2 Many DJ's / De La Soul / Kruder & Dorfmeister / Human League / Nouvelle Vague / Mr Scruff / Bodytonic DJs / Plus many more TBC For more on the silent disco check http://edition.cnn.com/2005/SHOWBIZ/Music/03/29/glastonbury.silentdisco.reut/

Sonรกr 2005. Barcelona, Spain. June 16th - 18th.

Miss Kittin. Playing for the third year in a row so the claws will be well and truly out. Meeeeeeeeoooowwww!!!

Picture a music festival held in a venue not unlike the National Museum by day and in a venue the size of 3 Point Depot’s by night (1/3 outdoors). Add to this blistering Summer sun, a relaxed knowledgable crowd and the World’s finest djs, musicians and image makers and you’re getting close to the annual spectacle that is the Sonár festival held in Barcelona. Add to this cheap beer and cava and looks like we’ve got a fun-in-the-sun party on your hands!! Now in it’s twelfth year this year’s festival sees a huge move away from the electronica and hiphop bias that have been quite prevalent over the last few years towards what they term ‘organic’ music (see below). Whatever they call it, you can be assured that this festival is going to rock with Soulwax, LCD Soundsystem, Le Tigre, The Battles and many more letting rip over the 3 days in June. More information at www.sonar.es Ellen Allien

Sonar 2005 : Press Release

The founder of Berlin label B-Pitch Control whose approach is corrosive electro bass and highly imaginative techno. If it’s too loud, you really should get yourself down The Late Late.

Over the last few years, many acts involving the experimental sound discourse of electronic music have made use of more or less conventional instruments to realize their aims. Portable computers, or laptops, which predominated in the past, have in numerous cases been replaced by guitars, basses, drums and traditional instruments on the stage. In this edition of Sónar, one finds a notable return to the organic and physical in the creation of live music. An impressive cluster of bands with a focus on electronic music, be it a means or an end, will perform on the different stages of the festival. Such unorthodox acts as LCD Soundsystem, Le Tigre, Soulwax, Hood, Radian, Mouse On Mars, Efterklang, The Battles and To Rococo Rot seek to diminish the space between acoustic, electronic and popular music. Traditional instrumentation is also evident in the alliance between the Brazilian group Hurtmold and American cornet player Rob Mazurek, as well as in the sound of two very different bands that revive, in their own special way, a kind of avant-garde pop of the 1980s: the veteran and respected Durutti Column and Norwegian newcomer The Beautiful People.

Frankenstyles.

As mentioned earlier the street art scene is thriving here in Dublin and this is helped in no small way by the efforts of Frankenstyles. Whether it’s his sticker based graphics which find their homes in strategically placed areas round town or his wooden sculptures this guy’s work is both conceptual and clever. While you’re probably aware of his work you might as well pop down to www.frankenstyles.com and see what else he’s been up...

Frankenstyles ‘Clouds’.

‘Pipe’, ‘Woodhead 1’ & ‘Woodhead 2’. All by Frankenstyles.

Non-Format.

If you buy rather than nick music (good work fella!) and if you’re into the alternative (weirdy beardy some would say) scene chances are you’ve come across and probably bought some of the work of the these two UK based designers. Famed for their work for the alternative music bible The Wire, which they’ve recently given up designing after 5 years, their creative output is consistently second to none. To see what all the fuss is about check www.non-format.com To subscribe to The Wire hit www.thewire.co.uk It’s worth checking out anyhow as they do limited edition guest designer tees. Yum!

The Redneck Manifesto / Johnny Kelly.

I must admit I only bought the Redneck’s latest album ‘I Am Brazil’ relatively recently but this purchase was sealed once I saw the amazing animation made to promote the ‘We still got it’ track. Done by designer Johnny Kelly as a college project this piece is simply sublime. It seems I’m not the only person who thinks so either as it went on to be exhibited at the world renowned DOTMOV festival which is held in association with the mighty Shift magazine.

Here’s what the people (Diesel Virtual Department) who selected it had to say about it: “The motivation for selecting this as our choice was for a combination of reasons. The piece benefits from a strong and simple concept and well thought out story. Putting the viewer in the shoes of a designer charged with designing the album cover for a band. The chosen visual style is interesting and relevant. Reinterpreting the style of cut out paper collage techniques using digital animation, employed in such a way that the techniques and technology used remains transparent, aiding the design, rather than overpowering it. The design is strong, bold and confident, with excellent use of colour and composition. The animation related well to the music and was full of fun elements and a twisted sense of humour which is something that the Diesel creative team really appreciate. The piece both captures and maintains the viewers attention until the end of the animation, and succeeds in clearly communicating the intended story.” To see the video get along to http://www.trustmeimathief.com/press_packs/rednecks_002/video/redh.mov

and make sure to buy the album too. To see more about the DOTMOV festival check http://www.shift.jp.org/mov/2004/en.shtml And finally, to see more of Johnny’s work, check http://www.mickeyandjohnny.com/ The calendar design is a must-see.

Tiger Beer wall.

Every been sitting / hovering in a pub toilet feeling the urge to leave your mark, and not just in the bowl? Ever wanted to get stuck in and rather than do a ‘Micko 4 ‘Tasha 4ever’-esque scrawl actually design a wall which others would see and go “Wow-weeeee!!!!” to? Well now’s your chance... Tiger Beer, Mongrel Magazine and Hogan’s bar have come up with a great competition offering you the chance to design and paint our own wall in Hogan’s. ‘The Writer’s Block” is a monthly competition open to artists of all types to submit their designs and, if they win, produce. The resulting masterpiece will then be left on display for a month until another lucky winner is picked. Nice.

To ease the hurt of the redecoration every winner will win an opening night’s drinks party courtesy of Tiger Beer and the overall winner bags themselves a brand spankin’ new iMac. Nice Arís. To be in with a chance submit your designs to thewritersblock@mongrel.ie by the 30th of each month and who knows? Right, where’s me markers, crayons and pipe cleaners, me’s feeling a Blue Peter moment coming on!

Pony.

One of Ireland’s most prolific creative exports, Niall Sweeney left Ireland (and a lecturer stint in Dun Laoghaire) a couple of years ago to further his education in London Town. Since then he has graduated and also set up his own company, Pony. But that wasn’t before he had left an indelible mark on the capital and the visual culture of this island.

Whether it was his involvement in the legendary Elevator, H.A.M. or Powderbubble club nights or his design work for D1 recording and it’s Dublin Electronic Arts Festival (D/E/A/F/), the now defunct Suffolk Street clothing emporium Makullas, CODE magazine, Alternative Miss Ireland, Emigre magazine, The George and much more besides, you cannot have been touched in some way by his vast portfolio of work... If you’re not sure, visit www.ponybox.co.uk where many sweet treats await your perusal.

Sweet sounds. While I typed I listened to...

Halfset ‘dramanalog’ Was given a copy of this by a friend and what a friend they turned out to be... It’s a beautifully put together album, dreamy in places and intense in others. Well worth a trip to Tower for. More at http://www.halfset.com/ LCD Soundsystem ‘LCD Soundsystem’ (2 disk set) New York’s finest prove they’re more than a flash in the pan with this brilliant album and bonus disk. Yes, ‘Daft Punk is playing at my house’ and ‘Losing my edge’ are brilliant but you just try stand still for the rest... Go on, try... See, you can’t! The Redneck Manifesto ‘I am Brazil’ As mentioned earlier I got into this only recently but man, this album’s brilliant. I’m not usually a man for music with no lyrics but with this you don’t miss them a bit. Supposedly amazing live so that’s on the things to do... Buy yours now at http://www.trustmeimathief.com/ and while you’re at it, check http://www.theredneckmanifesto.com/ Erlend Oye ‘DJ Kicks’ This has been in constant rotation with me now for over a year and despite the since-released Daddy G and The Glimmers attempts this really does reign supreme. Easily the best mix CD you could do yourself a favour of and buy. Exceptional.

Backlash mix numero 4 If you’re ever around South William Street in Dublin on a Thursday night you could do a whole lot worse than get yourself along to Backlash, held in the intimate surroundings of Wax, under Spy. Now running for around 18 months this gig is run by a more than passionate crew with the record boxes to prove it... A prove it they do if the following is to be believed, it’s episode 4 in their mix sets so kick back, crank it up and Jesus man, have some fun. Download the future from here... http://www.backlash.ie/audio/backlash_mixtape_04.mp3

DJ Format Just found this video link for DJ Format’s new single and reckon on the basis of this it may be worth buying the album, regardless of that though you just gotta check out the video... Cool. http://www.keithschofield.com/djformat-video/11-02-final.mov

Upcoming.

Watchlist. The stuff we didn’t have time to put in properly, next time though, promise, swear, etc.

Angry go global. Seems there’s no stopping the Dublin based ‘Crew-Of-Cool’ in their evil (not really!) campaign for world domination as they plan to sell their wares and a whole load else on the virtual boutique that is the world wide web. Due to go online in the near future keep checking by www.angryretail.com to ensure you’re sorted for Summer. Better still, it ensures you don’t look like you been dressed by your other half. I don’t care if you couldn’t give a FCUK, get stuck in and support these guys. The Chalets’ new site is online. There’s definitely something in the water as it seems the world can’t get enough of the brilliant Irish talent emerging at the moment. Be it Hal, Bell X1, Snow Patrol, Damian Rice or Donna & Joesph McCall (Yeah, the Eurovisioners!) Irish music is giving the world plenty to rock too. None more so than The Chalets who are, as we speak, busily working on the first single off their new album ‘Check In’. The single’s called ‘Feel the machine’ and it’s due out real soon on CD and good aul vinyl. If it’s anything like the last two releases best you get your folks out of the house because these bright young things rock hard.
