As we lead Covenant EFC towards Vision 2028 and our 50th Jubilee Anniversary, God has given us Acts 20:28 as our spiritual anchor:

“PAY CAREFUL ATTENTION

to yourselves and to all the flock, in which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to care for the church of God, which he obtained with his own blood.” As church leaders and members, we are to pay careful attention to our hearts’ condition and to our triune God. At last year’s Listening Retreat, God impressed a spiritual burden upon us for 2018: WE ARE CHURCH: PRAY AND REPENT! We are CHURCH We believe God has called us to be One Church with Multiple Centres and pursue the A.D.I.D. of A Certain Kind within each local centre through small groups. We will enhance the small group strategy so that we can make disciples who make disciples. This year, we were led to preach on the book of Acts, as we rediscover what the Church is all about. We Are Church: PRAY! I (Rev Tan Kay Kiong) received a distinct picture of Moses praying in the mountain with his hands supported by Aaron and Hur. As I read the account in Exodus 17, the burden was clear:

1. We Are Under Attack (Exo 17:8) Many of us are living defeated lives stained by sin and the affairs of this world. The devil has launched his arsenal of attacks against every possible area of our lives. 2. We Must Fight with the Weapons of God (Exo 17:9b) The staff in Moses’ hand was the staff of God. Formerly used to goad sheep, this once ordinary staff became God’s weapon to fight spiritual battles. We must put on God’s spiritual armour so that we can stand against the devil’s schemes. 3. We Must Fight with the Weapons of God and Hold Up Our Hands (Exo 17:11a) Joshua and his troops were fighting with all their might against the enemies, but the secret to their victory was Moses’ hands raised to God in desperate intercession. Aaron and Hur helped Moses keep his hands up. We must hold up our hands in intercession for spiritual victory in our lives. We Are Church: Pray and REPENT! There is no true prayer without REPENTANCE. “Bring forth fruits in keeping with repentance.” − Luke 3:8. God spoke to me (Rev Tony Yeo) through the book of Joel: 1. Repent humbly – put on sackcloth, wail before the altar, declare a holy fast and call a sacred assembly (Joel 1:13-14). 2. Repent wholeheartedly – rend your heart and not your garments (Joel 2:12-13). Return to God with all our hearts for He is gracious and compassionate! 3. Repent urgently – in the light of the day of the Lord and His coming judgement (Joel 3:3-14). We believe that God will speak to each of you personally as you spend daily devotional time with the Lord in His Word and in prayer. This Devotional Journal (DJ) has been designed to help you in this. We pray and trust that God will greatly bless you as you use this DJ daily, and His Spirit will guide and direct your prayers such that God will be pleased to answer them and display His glory in you and in our church for the advance of His Kingdom in Singapore and beyond. Prepare your heart in God’s presence

■ Select a fixed time (preferably in the morning before you begin your day) and a quiet place where you can be alone and undisturbed. ■ Observe a moment of silence as you acknowledge God’s presence. Centre down. ■ Begin with a song of worship. Meditate on the lyrics even if you are unfamiliar with the tune. (Refer to the list of worship songs provided.) ■ Ask God to open your heart to hear Him.

SOMETHING TO PONDER... Examining your life is essential in your faith journey. Your redeemed life as a disciple of Christ deserves careful examining. May you take root and bear fruit in Him!

IS GOD’S WORD WITH ME WHEREVER I GO? * I can keep His Word in my heart. Scripture: Psalm 119:11 ACTIVITY BITE Spin a globe and stop it with your finger. You can also take a map of the world and randomly toss a beanbag or coin on it. Look at where your finger, beanbag or coin lands. Say the name of the country out loud and get everyone to repeat it after you. CHAT TIME Q1: What important things do you need to bring for outings? Share why you chose them. Q2: Why are these things important and what happens when you forget them? Q3: How can we bring God’s Word with us? LEARNING POINT When we go out, we often carry a bag containing the things that we need. It could be a water bottle, an extra set of clothes, a book, a cap or even a little toy. God’s Word is important because it helps us know what is right and wrong and helps us to live well. When we take God’s Word with us, we are keeping it inside our minds and our hearts. We can take God’s Word with us wherever we go. For example, when we are worried about whether we can remember that God is our Shepherd (Psa 23:1), we have to remind ourselves that He is in control and will lead us, so we don’t need to fear. When we remember God’s Word, it will help us make the right choices every time. ACTION POINT Let’s memorise Psalm 119:11 with actions: I have hidden (thumbs to chest) Your Word (both hands point up) in my heart (cover heart with hands) that I might not sin against You. Psalm 119:11 (hold out hands like a book). Full of the Holy Spirit

O BSERVATION How did Luke paint the portrait of Stephen’s Spirit-filled life in verses 1 to 5, 8 to 10 and Acts 7:54-55?

Deeper Reflection LUKE’S DESCRIPTION of Stephen as being full of the Holy Spirit was very intensive and extensive: a man of “good reputation, full of the Spirit and of wisdom” (v.3), “full of faith and of the Holy Spirit” (v.5), “full of grace and power” (v.8), “full of the Holy Spirit” (Acts 7:55) and with “the wisdom and the Spirit” in him (v.10). Luke used the adjective “full of ” four times (v.3, 5, 8; Acts 7:55) and referred to the Holy Spirit four times (v.3, 5, 10; Acts 7:54). The characteristics of Stephen’s Spirit-filled life included good reputation (v.3), wisdom (v.3, 10), faith (v.5) and grace and power (v.8). No other character in Acts was given such a description. Peter (Acts 4:8), Barnabas (Acts 11:24) and Paul (Acts 13:9) were described as Spirit-filled only once. In Acts, Stephen’s Spirit-filled life was seen in four settings. He was “of good reputation, full of the Spirit and of wisdom” (v.3), and “full of faith and of the Holy Spirit” (v.5) in doing the mundane things – serving tables (v.1-2). He was “full grace and power” in the ministry of the miraculous in “performing great wonders and signs” (v.8). In preaching the message, his opponents were “unable to cope with the wisdom and the Spirit with which he was speaking” (v.10). At his martyrdom, he was “full of the Holy Spirit” (Acts 7:55).

Full of the Holy Scriptures

S CRIPTURE

Acts 6:11-15; 7:1-53

O BSERVATION How does Stephen’s speech (Acts 7:2-53) show that he was full of the Holy Scriptures?

Deeper Reflection STEPHEN WAS FULL OF THE HOLY SPIRIT and full of the Holy Scriptures. He was accused of speaking against the temple and the law (v.11, 13-14). His long response (Acts 7:2-53) consisted of several direct quotations from the Septuagint1 − a series of allusions to and summaries of the biblical history of Israel. Throughout his Scripture-filled speech, Stephen was not merely giving biblical information. It was a theological confrontation and correction of his opponents’ wrong understanding of the temple that led to their accusation against him. Stephen was presenting with the Scriptures a biblical theology of the presence of God.2 Behind Stephen’s extensive use of the Scriptures were three presuppositions. Firstly, knowledge and understanding of the Scriptures, which are crucial and foundational – especially so in view of a dangerous reality called “zeal for God, but not according to knowledge” of the truth (Rom 10:1-2). Secondly, the authority and power of the Scriptures: God speaks through the Scriptures. Thirdly, the Scriptures contains “the ancient paths” (Jer 6:16) with universal and timeless significance and relevance. We must grow towards a life full of the Holy Scriptures with these three presuppositions as our conviction and practice.

Holy Presence in Unholy Places

S CRIPTURE

Acts 6:11-14; 7:2-3, 30-34

O BSERVATION What does when God “appeared” to Abraham in idolatrous Mesopotamia (cf. Josh 24:2-3) as “the God of glory” tell us about God (7:2)?

Deeper Reflection STEPHEN WAS ACCUSED of speaking “against this holy place” (vv.13-14) – the temple, the sanctuary of God’s presence, which was very sacred to the Jews. But in God’s plan of salvation, Jesus the Messiah would replace the temple − His body is the temple (Jn 2:13-21) and He is the very presence of God. The Jews conceived of God as so completely identified with the temple that its existence guaranteed divine protection, and its destruction would mean divine abandonment. But Stephen debunked their false perception that God’s presence was bound inside “this holy place” by tracing the theological history of God’s presence manifested in unholy places – places outside the holy land, Israel. God “appeared” to Abraham in idolatrous “Mesopotamia” (cf. Josh 24:2-3) as “the God of glory” (Acts 7:2) – which recalls God’s glory filling the holy tabernacle (Exo 40:34-35) and Solomon’s holy temple (1 Kin 8:10-11). God “appeared” to Moses “in the wilderness of Mount Sinai in the flame of a burning bush” (Acts 7:30). But there, God commanded Moses to remove his sandals, because the unholy place was now “holy ground” (Acts 7:33). But, it is even more startling that God “made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf ” (2 Cor 5:21). The Holy became unholy on the cross!

Idolatrous Theology of God’s Presence

S CRIPTURE

Acts 6:11-14; 7:44-50

O BSERVATION What do Stephen’s words about the temple of God in Acts 7:44-50 tell us about the presence of God?

Deeper Reflection GOD DELIVERED ISRAEL from the Egyptian bondage that He “might dwell among them” (Exo 29:46) in “the tabernacle of testimony” to be constructed “according to the pattern” required by God (Acts 7:44). When Israel possessed Canaan, they brought in the tabernacle “until the time of David” (Acts 7:45). David wanted to build God a permanent “dwelling place” (Acts 7:46). This was David’s idea, not God’s. God’s presence is not static, but dynamic (see Num 9:15-23). He chose to be moving about with His people in a mobile tent as He willed (2 Sam 7:5-7). It was Solomon who “built a house” for God (Acts 7:47). But this static temple must be viewed against this reality of the person and the presence of God: “the Most High does not dwell in houses made by human hands” (Acts 7:48) and “What kind of house will you build for Me?” (Acts 7:49). We dare not, because we cannot domesticate the transcendent sovereign God, as if His presence and activity can be set up, contained, managed and increased at will by us through certain religious formulas, activities, efforts and achievements. This is an unholy “this holy place” mentality like that of the Jews’ (v.13), and it is idolatrous – an idolatrous theology of the presence of God.

Danger of the Unseen Log

S CRIPTURE

Acts 6:11-14; 7:20-44, 51-53

O BSERVATION Why did Stephen focus on Moses with half of his long speech (Acts 7:20-44) in response to being accused of speaking against Moses and the law (vv.11-14)?

Deeper Reflection THE JEWS ACCUSED STEPHEN of speaking “against Moses” (v.11) and “against the law” (v.13). The law came through Moses, and as such, the law and Moses were virtually synonymous. In his speech, Stephen showed that he respected and honoured Moses by underscoring Moses’ place of significance in salvation-history (Acts 7:20-44). Half of his speech – 25 verses out of 49 (Acts 7:2-50), focused on Moses, who “received living oracles” – the law, “on Mount Sinai” “to pass on to us [Israel in Stephen’s day]” (Acts 7:38). Then, with a sudden twist, the accused turned around to accuse his accusers: “you received the law… and yet did not keep it” (Acts 7:53). So, on the contrary, it was Stephen’s accusers who were “against Moses” and “against the law” rather than Stephen. Like Stephen’s accusers, we can in blinding self-righteousness, arrogance, presumptuousness, hypocrisy and self-deception think that we are right and judge others as wrong, when in reality, the reverse is true. Or, dare we think that we are more righteous or less sinful than others? Jesus warns against the danger of the unseen log in our own eyes when we look at the speck in others’ eyes with a judgemental spirit (Matt 7:1-4).

Face and Gaze of Glory

S CRIPTURE

Acts 6:8-15; 7:54-60; Exodus 34:29

O BSERVATION What observations can you make about Moses and Stephen (Exo 34:29; vv.11-15)?

Deeper Reflection WHEN MOSES DESCENDED FROM MOUNT SINAI with the two new tablets of the Ten Commandments, “the skin of his face shone” (Exo 34:29). It was no coincidence that the Jews who falsely accused Stephen of speaking “against Moses” and “against the law” saw that Stephen’s “face like the face of an angel” (v.15). Stephen’s face shining like Moses is God vindicating Stephen before his accusers for falsely accusing him of being against Moses “and against the law”. Stephen’s face being like an angel’s face was the “description of a person who is close to God and reflects some of His glory as a result of being in His presence”3. Moses’ face shone “because of his speaking with Him” (Exo 34:29). Christ’s life shines in us when we walk with Him and walk like Him. Stephen “saw” visibly “the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God” (Acts 7:55b), which remains unchanged till today. We can still see that same glory of God and lordship of Jesus – by faith, not by sight – when we “gazed intently into heaven” (Acts 7:55a) through the Scriptures where God has revealed Himself, His will and His heart.

Fundamental Character of a Church

S CRIPTURE

Acts 8:1-3; Matthew 18:20

O BSERVATION What is the fundamental character of a “church” (a key word in Acts) as designed by Christ (Matt 18:20)?

Deeper Reflection THE GREEK WORD ekklēsia is a key word in Acts, occurring 23 times, but used 19 times as a theological term “church” (e.g., Acts 5:11; vv.1, 3). Ekklēsia simply means “assembly”, as in the riotous “assembly” in Ephesus opposing Paul for preaching of the Gospel there (Acts 19:32, 39, 41). While “church” in the English Bible is found only in the New Testament, ekklēsia is found in the Septuagint,4 the Bible of the New Testament church. Ekklēsia in the Septuagint appears to be used only for Israel as “the assembly of the Lord”5 (e.g. Deut 23:1-3, 8). The New Testament church has its theological roots in and continuity with Israel, the Old Testament ekklēsia, as “the church of God” (Acts 20:28; 1 Cor 1:2; 11:16; Gal 1:13) – the new covenant Israel, which God “purchased” with the blood of the new covenant (Acts 20:28 with Lk 22:20). The fundamental character of the ekklēsia of Christ (Matt 18:17) as designed by Him is: “gathered together in My name” and “I am there in their midst” (Matt 18:20). Two or three persons “gathered together” in Christ is a church. This gathering together is purposeful and powerful, because Christ’s presence is not passive, but an active life-giving and life-changing presence.

O BSERVATION How does Luke show that verse 1 is a progression from Acts 1:8?

Deeper Reflection “PERSECUTION IN ACTS 4 TO 8 intensified from warning and threat (Acts 4:1-6, 18-21), to flogging (Acts 5:17-18, 40), to stoning, to death (Acts 7:59-60) and “great persecution” (v.1). Acts 8:1 Persecution: The persecution was “great” because it was intensive and extensive. Two Greek verbs used help us to get a feel of the persecution. Saul was “ravaging the church” (v.3). “Ravaging” denotes “a brutal cruelty”, and is “used of a wild boar devastating a vineyard and of a wild animal savaging a body”7. Saul was “dragging off” the believers, including “women,” from their homes (v.3) – an act “requiring force because of the inertia of the object being dragged”8. Was there screaming, crying, anxiety and fear in resisting the arrest? Probably. They were human beings after all. But there was steadfast faith and endurance nonetheless. Acts 1:8 Purpose: “they were all scattered throughout the regions of Judea and Samaria” (v.1) – where they were to be Jesus’ witnesses (Acts 1:8). Were they reluctant or slow to obey the Lord that they had to be forced out by persecution? Were they intentional in going to Judea and Samaria when they were scattered? Anyway, these “scattered” ones “went about preaching the word” (v.4). Providence was certainly over the persecution.

Many Unclean Spirits Coming Out

S CRIPTURE

Acts 8:5-13

O BSERVATION What is the significance of Luke repeating the term “giving attention” three times (vv.6, 10, 11) in verses 5 to 13?

Deeper Reflection PHILIP WENT DOWN TO SAMARIA and “proclaimed Christ” (v.5), “performing signs” (v.6), which resulted in “many who had been paralysed and lame” being “healed” (v.7b). But it is of significance that “unclean spirits” were “coming out” of “many” (v.7a). It is in relation to this that the story of Simon is next told (vv.9-13). The key word linking verses 4 to 8 and verses 9 to 13 is “giving attention” – repeated three times (vv.6, 10, 11), to show a contrast. Simon was “practicing magic” (v.9) in Samaria, “astonishing” (vv.9, 11) “all” the people “from smallest to greatest” (v.10), and they were “giving attention” to him (vv.10, 11). The Samaritans “called” Simon “the Great Power of God” (v.10), which suggested that Simon “portrays himself as some type of heavenly power; possibly even divine.”9 And this had gone on “for a long time” (v.11). Luke’s detailed description showed the great demonic oppression and control that the Samaritans needed to be delivered from. And many Samaritans “with one accord” shifted from “giving attention” to Simon’s “magic arts” (vv.10, 11) to “what was said by Philip” – the Word of God (v.6) − and “believed” (v.12). Do we know the power of God’s Word that demolishes and delivers from demonic strongholds?

Spiritual Dangers to Guard Against (1)

S CRIPTURE

Acts 8:9-24

O BSERVATION What was not right about Simon (vv.12-20)?

Deeper Reflection IN RELATION TO THE MINISTRY OF PHILIP (Acts 8:5-8, vv.12-13), and of Peter and John (vv. 14-17) in Samaria in Acts 8:5-24, the story of Simon, significantly, takes up 12 verses (vv.9-13, 18-24). Like other Samaritans, Simon also “believed” and was “baptised” (vv.12-13). But Simon’s story showed us certain spiritual dangers that believers ought to guard against. Sinful desire for spiritual power: Simon “continued on with Philip” (v.13). The Greek verb for “continued on” was used elsewhere in Acts for believers’ devotion to prayer and various forms of mutual ministry (Acts 1:14; 2:42, 46; 6:4); but for Simon, it was to Philip, because of the “signs and great miracles taking place” (v.13). Guard against the desire for or using spiritual power to bolster our ego or domineer over others. Viewing God in economic terms: Simon “offered money” to buy the “authority” to bestow the Holy Spirit on others, thinking he could “obtain the gift of God with money” (vv.18-20). If our seeking of God is predominantly built around having material gains or external successes – in any form, not just monetary − we may be viewing God in economic terms. This reflects a total misunderstanding of the nature of God.

Spiritual Dangers to Guard Against (2)

S CRIPTURE

Acts 8:18-24; Hebrews 4:12

O BSERVATION What observations can you make about the heart in verses 18 to 22 and Hebrews 4:12?

Deeper Reflection WE OUGHT TO GUARD against seeking to be someone great. Before Simon became a believer, he “claimed to be someone great” through his magic arts that “astonished” the Samaritans (Acts 8:9). Simon’s seeking to be someone great remained in him when he attempted to buy the gift of God with money (vv.18-20) – now as a believer, versus before as a pagan. Along with this self-centred desire was seeking attention from people, as implied in the Samaritans’ “giving attention” to Simon (Acts 8:10, 11). Simon’s root problem is a heart not right before God (v.21) and it is about “the intention of your heart” (v.22). Much of our sins are in the realm of the invisible, like our thoughts, desires, intentions, motives, motivations and attitudes, and these dwell in our hearts very subtly. It is not easy to detect and discern them. We can do the right thing before God, and yet be fundamentally wrong, because it is not with a right heart before God. King Amaziah was a classic example (2 Chron 25:2). Only the Word of God is “able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart” (Heb 4:12). And it is when we know and live by the Word that our “senses are trained to discern good and evil” (Heb 5:13-14).

The Spirit Breaks Down Alienation

S CRIPTURE

Acts 8:14-17; John 4:7-9, 19-20

O BSERVATION Why did the Holy Spirit fall upon the Samaritans through Peter and John, and not immediately when they believed as God promised in Acts 2:38-39 (vv.14-17 with John 4:7-9, 19-20)?

Deeper Reflection ON PENTECOST, when the Jews “received” the Word of God, they “receive the gift of the Holy Spirit” promised to all believers (Acts 2:38-39, 41). But when the Samaritans “received the word of God” (v.14), the Holy Spirit did not fall upon them immediately (v.16). Peter and John were sent to Samaria to lay hands on them and pray “that they might receive the Holy Spirit” (vv.14-17). Why? Hostility between the Jews and Samaritans lasted for a thousand years since the 10th century B.C., when Israel was divided into the northern and southern kingdoms (1 Kin 11-12). The northern kingdom’s capital was Samaria (1 Kin 16:24, 28, 29). In Jesus’ days, Jews had no dealings with Samaritans, who built their rival temple at Mount Gerizim in the 4th century B.C. (Jn 4:7-9, 19-20). The Samaritans’ reception of the Holy Spirit through the Jewish apostles was God’s way of accepting the Samaritans, and connecting and uniting the Samaritans and the Jews as one people of God in Christ, the Church.10 The Spirit of unity dwelling in us restores broken relationships. But, we must be ready to forgive and seek reconciliation. For how can we preach the Gospel of peace if we remain in conflict with one another?

WHAT D OES T H E BI B LE S AY A B OU T GOD ’ S LOV E F OR M E? * The Bible tells me that God loves me all the time. Scripture: Jeremiah 31:3; Psalm 139:1-3 ACTIVITY BITE Name a time of the day (for example, 6 to 9am) and ask someone in your family to describe what he or she will be doing then (for example, brushing my teeth, combing my hair, having breakfast and making my bed, among others). Switch roles and get your family members to name different times of the day while you describe what you would be doing. CHAT TIME Q1: How much do you think your parents know about what you are doing at every hour of the day? Q2: Why do you think your parents would be interested to know what you have been doing the whole day? Q3: Apart from being the all-knowing God, why would He want to know everything about you and what you do every minute of every day? LEARNING POINT Psalm 139:1-3 tells us that God is watching us all the time. Is it because He is trying to catch us making mistakes and punish us? Definitely not. When we love someone, we will take an interest in knowing what the person is doing. God takes an interest in us because He loves us greatly. This is mentioned in Jeremiah 31:3. When we remember this verse in our hearts, we will know that He is watching over everything that we do because He is interested in us. A Way of Divine Appointment

S CRIPTURE

Acts 8:25-29

O BSERVATION What observations can you make about the divine appointment for Philip in verses 25 to 29?

Deeper Reflection PHILIP WAS HAVING A POWERFUL AND FRUITFUL MINISTRY of the Gospel (Acts 8:5-8, 12), and evangelisation continued in “many villages of the Samaritans” (v.25). But…God called him to leave the scene of success to speak to an individual (vv.26-27). Wouldn’t Philip be of much greater use at the great revival in Samaria? Why waste an excellent human resource? That’s how we think. Talk about a theology of “divine inefficiency”. Without giving any details, the divine command was: “Get up and go south” (v.26). Philip “got up and went” (v.27a). Active obedience. In Greek, “south” can be translated as “at midday”11, for “south” “reflects the position of the sun at midday.”12 But “at noon the [desert] road would be deserted of travellers because of the heat”13. Wrong timing? It seemed so. This divine command was “unusual and perplexing”14. But… “there was an Ethiopian eunuch” (v.27). Divine appointment! He just went to “Jerusalem to worship” (v.27), but somehow, he did not hear the Gospel from the church there. He was “reading Isaiah the prophet” (v.28), from which Philip would preach Jesus (Acts 8:32-35). Then, the Spirit commanded Philip to join the eunuch (v.29). God leads one step at a time.

Reading and Understanding the Scriptures

Acts 8:30-31

O BSERVATION What does the conversation between Philip and the Ethiopian eunuch tell us about the nature of the Scriptures (vv.30-31)?

Deeper Reflection WHEN PHILIP HEARD the Ethiopian eunuch “reading Isaiah the prophet”, he asked him, “Do you understand what you are reading?” (v.30). There is an inescapable reality in our reading of the Scriptures. Consciously or unconsciously, we interpret what we read. Interpretation is the process to understanding. No one reads the Bible without wanting to understand it. We must aim and strive for correct understanding of the Scriptures, for “accurately handling the word of truth” (2 Tim 2:15) is required of us. But we need guidance, as reflected in the eunuch’s reply, “How could I, unless someone guides me?” (v.31). The Bible is a “multilayered book” which “has a surface simplicity that children can understand and relish” and “the immense complexity that lies below the surface”16. We do need to grow in greater, broader and deeper understanding of the Scriptures. The Spirit of truth in us will teach and guide us in understanding God’s Word (Jn 14:26; 16:13), but then, “not even piety and the gift of the Holy Spirit guarantee infallible interpretations”17. But, God has abundantly provided us with teachers we can and must learn from, for understanding the Scriptures is a community enterprise. The question is: How hungry am I?

The Suffering Servant of God

S CRIPTURE

O BSERVATION What did Peter say about Jesus and His followers’ sufferings in 1 Peter 2:21-25?

Deeper Reflection PHILIP “PREACHED JESUS” to the Ethiopian eunuch from Isaiah 53:7-8, the passage that he was reading (vv. 32-35). Isaiah 53 is a prophecy of the Suffering Servant of God which was fulfilled in Jesus Christ. Philip used Isaiah 53 to preach a message of salvation. In his first letter, Peter used the same text of Scripture (particularly, Isa 53:5-9) to teach on suffering in discipleship (1 Pet 2:21-25). The starting point of suffering in discipleship is “Christ suffered for you” as the Suffering Servant (1 Pet 2:21b). We don’t look first at the sufferings we are going through, but see our sufferings through “Christ suffered for you”. This Suffering Servant is “an example for you to follow in His steps” (1 Pet 2:21c). It is out of this example that comes the expectation of suffering: “you have been called for this purpose, since…” (1 Pet 2:21a). Discipleship is “to follow in His steps” with suffering as a core character. We are to endure like Him who is without sin (1 Pet 2:22), that “while being reviled, He did not revile in return; while suffering He uttered no threats” (1 Pet 2:23a). We can endure when we, like the silent Lamb being led to slaughter, “keep entrusting” ourselves “to Him who judges righteously” (1 Pet 2:23b).

Why Are You Not Baptised?

S CRIPTURE

O BSERVATION What similar observations can you make about baptism in Acts 2:41, 8:12 and 10:47-48?

Deeper Reflection THE ETHIOPIAN EUNUCH BELIEVED IN JESUS as the Messiah. When he and Philip “came to some water,” he exclaimed with great excitement: “Look! Water! What prevents me from being baptised?” (v.36). Believers in the early church believed and were baptised immediately. That happened to the 3,000 new believers on Pentecost (Acts 2:41). The Samaritans “believed” and “were being baptised” without delay (Acts 8:12). And so were Cornelius and all his family, relatives and friends (Acts 10:47-48). Many Christians today have been Christians for quite a while, but are not baptised. They either do not take baptism seriously, or they put it off for whatever reason. Jesus’ command to the church to “make disciples of all nations” includes “baptising them” (Matt 28:19). Baptism is part of being Jesus’ disciple. Baptism is a command to be obeyed. The non-Christian Chinese grandparents and parents of my generation19 used to tell us: “You can be a Christian, but just don’t get baptised.” To them, baptism sealed us as Christians and there would be no turning back for us. These nonbelievers viewed baptism very seriously. Why are you not baptised, if you are still unbaptised?

What Is the Meaning of Baptism?

S CRIPTURE

Romans 6:1-13

O BSERVATION What is the spiritual reality that water baptism symbolises (vv.1-13)?

Deeper Reflection WHEN WE BELIEVED AND RECEIVED CHRIST, we were “baptised into Christ” (v.3a) – symbolised by water baptism, into a union with Christ called “in Christ”. When we were “baptised into Christ”, we were “baptised into His death” (v.3b), “buried with Him” (v.4a) and “raised from the dead” with Him (vv.4b-5). When were we “united with” Christ “in the likeness of ” His death, burial and resurrection (v.5)? Christ’s death, burial and resurrection was a one-time historical event in salvation-history. It was at this very point of salvation-history that we died, were buried and were raised with Christ – long before our conversion. “Our spiritual history began at the cross. We were there in the sense that in God’s sight we were joined to Christ” on the cross.20 At our conversion, in Christ the Holy Spirit brought into effect in us this historical-theological union with Christ. The result is: in Christ we are “dead to sin” – no more enslaved by sin (vv.5-7) and walk in obedience by resurrection power (vv.11-13). Water baptism is like a wedding ring which reminds us of our vow of commitment to our spouse, and to live it out in the marriage. Water baptism is an event; but we must live out daily the spiritual reality that it symbolises.

O BSERVATION What is the significance of Luke emphasising the Ethiopian eunuch’s high position as the royal treasurer (v.27) in the story in verses 25 to 40?

Deeper Reflection LUKE PUT EMPHASIS on the Ethiopian eunuch’s high position as the royal treasurer (v.27). God called Philip to evangelise to a person “with a different cultural and social identity – an educated and politically influential man who lived in another country in a society with different values and traditions”21 and who was wealthy enough to own a copy of Isaiah (v.28). Humanly speaking, and from a cross-cultural mission’s point of view, what the eunuch was could be a challenge to evangelisation. Besides, Philip was of low social status. Does it matter? Generally, it does, but not so in this case. What matters is “the Spirit spoke to Philip” (v.29). When it is of the Spirit of God, barriers of any kind become non-existent. Unbeknown to Philip, the Spirit had prepared the eunuch’s heart for positive response: He was “reading Isaiah the prophet” (vv.28, 30) and an appropriate text for preaching Jesus (vv.32-35). The Spirit can lead us to share the Gospel in unforeseen circumstances that might deem inappropriate. Abruptly, the Spirit “snatched Philip away” and landed him at Azotus (v.39-40a). Faithful to his call, Philip “kept preaching the gospel to all the cities until he reached Caesarea”, some 90 kilometres up north (v.40b).

Conversion and Calling: Sovereign Grace

S CRIPTURE

O BSERVATION How would you look at the story of Paul’s conversion and calling in verses 1 to 6 in the light of Galatians 1:15

Deeper Reflection ACTS 9 is the story of Paul’s22 conversion and calling to be an apostle. When did Paul’s redemptive story begin? “When God set me apart even from my mother’s womb” (Gal 1:15a). Each of our redemptive stories began in the same way: “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you” (Jer 1:5). Do you see yourself as so special to God? Do you often ask God, “Why me?” Paul did, though not in those words. “Why me?” God’s sovereign grace. “Grace” because we don’t deserve it. “Sovereign” because it is God’s pleasure (cf. Psa 135:6). Paul’s way of asking “Why me?” was because he considered himself as “the least of the apostles” – followed by “but by the grace of God” (1 Cor 15:9-10), and “the very least of all saints” – followed by “His grace was given me” (Eph 3:8). God saved and called Paul while he was “ravaging the church” (Acts 8:3) and “breathing threats and murder” (v.1) as a “blasphemer, persecutor and violent aggressor”, such that he said, even as he grew in maturity: “I am” – not “I was” – “the foremost among sinners” (1 Tim 1:13-15). When we see God’s grace in our lives more and more, we won’t see ourselves as becoming more holy, even though we are in God’s sight.

Conversion and Calling: Sovereign Act

S CRIPTURE

Acts 9:1-9, 15

O BSERVATION What observations can you make about God’s sovereign act in Paul’s conversion to “the Way” of Jesus (vv.1-9, 15)?

Deeper Reflection BEFORE AND AFTER PAUL’S CONVERSION STORY (Acts 9) are the stories of the conversion of Gentiles: the Ethiopian eunuch (Acts 8:26-40) and Cornelius (Acts 10). We see here the sovereign God’s timing. God was bringing in Paul as “an apostle to the Gentiles” (v.15; Rom 11:13). Paul was “still breathing threats and murders” against Jesus’ disciples (v.1), being “not satisfied with his campaign in Jerusalem itself but still anxious to do more”23. As “a bitter opponent of Christ and His church,”24 with “his heart filled with hatred and his mind poisoned by prejudice”25 and being “furiously enraged” with Jesus’ disciples, he “kept pursuing them even to foreign cities” (Acts 26:11). And it was “as he was travelling” in his church-destroying mission to Damascus, that the Lord appeared to him “suddenly” in a bright blinding light (vv.2-3). We see here the sovereign God’s touching and transforming of this “self-appointed inquisitor”26 (vv.4-8). No life is too difficult for God to touch and transform. God does act “suddenly” and surprisingly. A person “more a wild animal than human being”27 can become God’s “chosen instrument” for world missions (v.15). We go on our intentional disciplemaking mission resting in such a God.

Bright Light and Audible Voice

S CRIPTURE

Acts 9:3-9

O BSERVATION Is Paul’s dramatic encounter with the Lord (vv.3-9) to be regarded as the norm or the exception? Why?

Deeper Reflection PAUL’S CONVERSION AND CALLING was a dramatic experience of a bright light shining and an audible voice speaking (vv.3-6). We can call this experience God calling, God speaking or an encounter with God. Is Paul’s dramatic experience to be regarded as the norm or the exception? God is sovereign. He chooses to meet us, call us and speak to us in ways as He wills and pleases. One’s intimacy with God is not necessarily “measured” by how spectacular one’s experiences with God are. God’s special and significant moments with us can be simple and quiet, but no less sacred, real and powerful. One morning in 1973, when I was 16 years of age and five months old in the faith, I prayed, “Lord, I give my life to You to serve You full-time someday in the future.” That was the moment of God’s call for me. And providence worked out the fulfilment of that call 14 years later. Pastor Edmund Chan was mentoring me when I was serving as a pastor in another church. Serving in Covenant EFC never crossed my mind. But one morning in 1997, a thought flashed through my mind: “I will serve in Covenant EFC one day.” It came to pass four years later. What is most important is that when God speaks, we know.

Not Knowing the Fuller Picture

S CRIPTURE

Acts 9:10-19

O BSERVATION What observations can you make about Ananias regarding the Lord’s command to him to minister to Paul (vv.10-16)?

Deeper Reflection AFTER PAUL’S CONVERSION (Acts 9:1-9), the Lord spoke to Ananias in a vision, by first calling his name: “Ananias” (v.10). His immediate response was, “Here am I, Lord,” which indicates his readiness to obey – like Isaiah (Isa 6:8). Such readiness reflected Ananias’s deep commitment to his Lord. He was “a godly man, deeply devoted to the law” (Acts 22:12, NLT). God’s command to him was “Get up and go” to minister to Paul (vv.11-12). Ananias’s response was incongruent to what he said earlier “Here am I, Lord.” He protested (vv.13-14). The name “Saul” invoked much fear by “how much harm he did to” the Church (v.13). And now he was at Damascus where Ananias lived! The fear was very real. Ananias knew nothing about Paul’s conversion and the Lord did not tell him. But to Ananias’ protest the Lord repeated His command, “Go!” (v.15). And only then he knew that Paul had become the Lord’s “chosen instrument” (vv.15-16). It is characteristic of God in not giving us the fuller picture of things, present and future, when He calls us to obey His commands or to trust in Him when we walk “in darkness” and have “no light” (Isa 50:10). God’s command “Go!” – that is, His Word − is enough for our response “Here am I, Lord.”

Eyes Open, But Seeing Nothing

S CRIPTURE

Acts 9:1-18

O BSERVATION What is the significance of Luke emphasising Paul’s sight (vv.8, 9, 12, 17, 18) in the story of his conversion and calling?

Deeper Reflection PAUL’S ENCOUNTER WITH JESUS (vv.3-6) that resulted in the situation where “though his eyes were open, he could not see” (v.8) is about God breaking us. Paul’s companions “saw the light” (Acts 22:9), but were not blinded by it. They “heard the sound but did not see anyone” (v.7, NIV), while Paul saw Jesus and spoke with Him. The blinding effect of the heavenly light was meant for Paul alone. Paul’s blindness made him powerless and helpless, as he had to be led like a child to go to Damascus (v.8). When God breaks us, it does not necessarily mean we will be broken before God. We may be unhappy and angry with God instead, because God’s breaking of us can be very painful. Paul was broken before God. In his utter weakness – “without sight”, he fasted for three days (v.9), expressing his repentance.29 And he was “praying” (v.11), seeking divine guidance concerning his life.30 Paradoxically, when seeing nothing he “saw in a vision” (v.12). Brokenness before God leads to God building us. Paul needed to “regain his sight” (vv.12, 17-18). Luke’s emphasis on Paul’s sight (which occurred eight times in Acts 931) was certainly more than just physical. In our brokenness, God will build in us a new vision of Himself and ourselves.

A Disciple-servant’s Threefold Christ-centred Call

S CRIPTURE

Acts 9:15-16, 19b-30

O BSERVATION What characterises the call of a disciple of Jesus as portrayed in the Lord’s call for Paul in verses 15 to 16?

Deeper Reflection FOLLOWING JESUS is a threefold Christ-centred call of a discipleservant (vv.15-16). The call is first and foremost Christ-centred: “of Mine”, “My name” (v.15) and “for My name’s sake” (v.16). We are Jesus’ “chosen instrument” (v.15a). Being “chosen” is a special privilege that requires faithful stewardship. We are an “instrument” in Jesus’ hands to be used for Jesus’ purposes. We live and die for the Lord, not for ourselves (Rom 14:7-8). We are to “bear His name” (v.15b) as living Gospel. To “bear His name” is to proclaim Christ, which includes character witness to Christ through our lifestyle. The Lord has committed His “name” – meaning His character and honour in the world, to us, His people. It is a very sacred trust. Once the world knows that we are Christians, we bear His name. When we pray “Hallowed be Your name” (Matt 6:9), we must also offer our lives as the answer to our petition. May it not be true of us that “the name of God is blasphemed among the nations because of you” (Rom 2:24)! And we “must suffer for His name’s sake” (v.16). Mark the word “must”. When we suffer persecution, we should not ask why. Perhaps, we should ask why when we don’t suffer persecution (cf. 2 Tim 3:12).

WHO SAYS JESUS WANTS TO BE MY FRIEND? * The Bible tells me that Jesus wants to be my friend forever. Scripture: John 15:15; James 2:23 ACTIVITY BITE Tell your child that he or she can invite a friend over to play. Talk about what your child wants to do when their friend comes over. When the play date is over, talk with your child about what makes a good friendship. CHAT TIME Q1: Why are good friendships important? Q2: What does it take for you to be a good friend to someone? Q3: Jesus calls us His friends. Why would He want to do so? LEARNING POINT Jesus is the Son of God and He is God to us. In John 15:15, He also calls Himself a friend to us. Why would He do that? We worship Jesus as our God, but sometimes it makes us feel like He is far away from us. We may feel like He will only listen to us when we pray. Jesus wants to be close to us every second, even when we don’t think of Him. He is even by our side when we are sleeping. He wants us to know that He can be our best friend and that He is there for us anytime. ACTION POINT Since you are a friend of Jesus, write down some things you would like to do for Him. It can be singing praises every day, telling Him about your hobbies or just talking to Him before you sleep at night. God Seeks

Acts 9:31-43

O BSERVATION What observations can you make about God in His providence at work through Peter at Lydda (vv.31-35) and Joppa (vv.36-43)?

Deeper Reflection PROVIDENCE WAS AT WORK through Peter at Lydda (vv.31-35) and Joppa (vv.36-43). As Peter was travelling from place to place for teaching and evangelising,32 he “came down” to Lydda (vv.31, 32). And “there he found a man named Aeneas” (v.33a). No coincidence. It was God who “found Aeneas” when Peter “found” him. God healed Aeneas of his paralysis that made him “bedridden for eight years” (vv.33b-34). Then, “all”33 who lived in Lydda and Sharon “saw him” and they “turned to the Lord” (v.35). Then, “it happened at that time” that in Joppa, a disciple named Tabitha “fell sick and died” (vv.36-37). What was the “that time”? “Lydda was near Joppa” (v.38a). And “it happened at that time” that “Peter was there” at Lydda (v.38b). No coincidence. The disciples in Joppa urged Peter to come – supposedly, to raise the dead Tabitha (v.38). Peter came and “knelt down and prayed”, and said, “Tabitha, arise”, and she became alive (v.40). This resulted in “many” in Joppa “believing in the Lord” (v.42). In both cases, we see God who seeks us and acts according to His timing to accomplish His purpose. Meanwhile, Peter “stayed many days in Joppa” (v.43), where he would receive a new divine assignment (Acts 10).

Acts 10:1-8, 30-33

O BSERVATION What observations can you make about God and Cornelius’s devotion to Him (vv.1-8, 30-33)?

Deeper Reflection CORNELIUS WAS A MODEL OF SERIOUS DEVOTION to God. He was not converted to Judaism, as he was not circumcised (Acts 11:2-3), but he frequented synagogues and sought to live by Jewish law.35 So, religiously, he would be “standing at the boundary between Judaism and paganism”36. But, Luke introduced him with a fourfold description: “devout”, “feared God”, “gave alms generously to the poor” and “prayed constantly to God” (v.2). This fourfold description underscored his fervent devotion and “godly character”37. Indeed, “Jewish Christians would have recognised in him a truly biblical piety” and “an exemplary believer in the God of Israel”38 (cf. Lk 7:9). Most importantly, God “remembered” his devotion (v.31), which had “ascended as a memorial offering before God” (v.4). Cornelius did not know this until God told him then. We may feel at times that we devote ourselves to God in vain, because He seems to be not responding. God sees our devotion, “for God is not unjust so as to forget” it (Heb 6:10). God waits to respond. God responded to Cornelius’s devotion at a pivotal moment in salvation-history when “unclean” Gentiles would become God’s holy people through the Gospel.
