About CONCACAF and the Olympics

2

About CONCACAF CONCACAF “The Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football” is one of six continental confederations of FIFA (Federation Internationale de Football Association) and serves as governing body of football in this part of the world. It is composed of 40 national associations, from Canada in the north to Guyana, Surinam and French Guyana in the south. As the administrative body for the region, CONCACAF organizes competitions, offers training courses in technical and administrative aspects of the game, and helps to build football throughout the region. The primary function of the Confederation is the organization of competitions for national teams and clubs. It also conducts qualifying tournaments for FIFA events including the FIFA World Cup™, the FIFA Women's World Cup, FIFA world championships at the youth level, beach soccer, futsal and club competition. The CONCACAF Gold Cup™ is the showpiece event for men’s national teams as it crowns the regional champion. The USA won the inaugural competition in 1991, defeating Honduras before 40,000 fans at the L.A. Memorial Coliseum in California. Mexico then won three consecutive titles, the third in 1998 before a crowd of 91,000 in Los Angeles, before Canada won its first major international honor in more than 100 years of football history in 2000. After the USA claimed the 2002 title, Mexico returned to the top of the Confederation with their fourth crown in 2003. The USA have claimed the 2005 and 2007 editions of the CONCACAF Gold Cup™. The Champions' Cup has been CONCACAF’s premier club competition since its inception in 1962. In August 2008, the Champions’ Cup has been replaced by the new CONCACAF Champions League that will be played annually with 24 teams from national assoications affiliated to the Confederation. In 1994, CONCACAF took pride in joining Europe and South America as the only Confederations to have hosted three or more World Cup tournaments. Mexico welcomed the world twice, in 1970 and 1986, while the USA hosted the event for the first time in 1994. As the century turned, each zone within the Confederation took turns in hosting a FIFA world championship. In both 1999 and 2003, the USA hosted a World Cup, this time for women, while Mexico played host to the FIFA Confederations Cup in 1999. Guatemala hosted its first world championship in 2000 with the FIFA Futsal World Championship, while Trinidad & Tobago became the first Caribbean country to host a world football event in 2001 with the FIFA World U-17 Championship. Jack Austin Warner of Trinidad & Tobago, President of CONCACAF, is a FIFA Vice President and Chairman of the FIFA Youth Competitions Committee. He also serves as Deputy Chairman of the Finance Committee. He is a Member of the Committees for World Cup Organiznation, Emergency and Strategic. General Secretary Chuck Blazer of the USA is a member of the FIFA Executive Committee. He is the Chairman of the Organizing Committees for the FIFA Women’s U-20 & U-17 World Cups and serves as Deptuy Chairman for FIFA Players’ Status. He is also a member of the committees for the Organization of the World Cup and Marketing & Television Advisory Board.

OVERALL ANALYSIS Honduras and the USA qualified for the Men’s Football Tournament at the 2008 Olympic Games as a result of their performances in the final qualifying tournament that was held in three venues in the USA. (Tampa, Carson and Nashville) The Catrachos and the Stars & Stripes advanced from the Tampa group and had a rematch in the final in Nashville after eliminating the two teams from the Carson group, Canada and Guatemala, in the all-important semi-finals. Honduras gained some revenge with a narrow 1:0 win in extra time over the USA that was missing several key players. Overall, it was a competitive final qualifying tournament with 11 of the 16 games either tied or decided by one goal.

2008 CONCACAF Men’s Olympic Qualifying

TECHNICAL AND TACTICAL OBSERVATIONS The top two teams defensively qualified for the Olympic Games. Honduras only scored four goals in five games, but only conceded one goal, a penalty kick, in the group game against the USA. The Stars & Stripes scored six goals: four from set plays, but only conceded two goals. Both teams had a strong backbone/spine from the goalkeeper to the forward players and collectively, all the players were aware of their roles and responsibilities. Both teams had a good balance of players in the midfield ‘engine

DRAMA IN TAMPA The games at Raymond James Stadium were overshadowed by the dramatic events following the surprise opening draw between Cuba and USA. Seven players left the Cuban team, which, given the opening win by Honduras over Panama in the last minute of play, made it a two-horse race between the USA and Honduras. The Stars & Stripes, with two 1:0 wins over Panama and Honduras topped the group, with a talented team from Panama finishing third, after a convincing win over a tired Cuban team in the final game. MORE DRAMA IN CARSON The drama at the Home Depot Center was reserved for the final day, following some surprise results. One of the pre-tournament favourites, Mexico, could only draw with Canada in the opening game. This was followed by a stunning loss to a well-organized Guatemalan team. Canada, however, lost their second game to a talented Haitian team, which meant that all would decided on the final day (to see who would accompany Guatemala to Nashville) Canada defeated an under-strength Guatemalan team 5:0, which meant that Mexico, who had an identical record to Canada, had to win their game over Haiti by six clear goals. It was not to be. The Tricolores, despite total domination, could only win 5:1 against a Haitian team that played with 10 men for twothirds of the game. Canada advanced, whilst Mexico suffered a rare elimination in the group stages.

room. Dax McCarty and Sacha Kljestan impressed with their workrate, both on and off the ball, as did their opposite numbers in the Honduran midfield, Marvin Sanchez and Ramon Nuñez. Up front, the Stars and Stripes combination of Freddy Adu and Josie Altidore had an edge by virtue of the finishing power of Adu, who finished as top scorer in the tournament, with four goals, three of which were from set plays. The usual Honduran duet of José Giuty and Luis Lopez did not register a goal in the competition and it was left to Georgie Welcome to score the only goal of the game against a US team, minus Adu, in the extra time of the final game. Midfielder Hendry Thomas was the leading scorer for the Catrachos with two goals. It was interesting to note that the two teams that qualified from the Home Depot Center group, Canada and Guatemala, both utilised a similar 4-2-31 system of play, with a back four supplemented by two defensive midfielders as a screen in front of the central defenders. In that regard, the Canadian duo of Tyler Hemming and Keegan Ayre impressed with their workrate and tactical discipline, as did their opposite numbers, Manuel Leon and Jean Marquez. Interesting to note the important combination from the two number 10s, Will Johnson and Jose

THE GOALS Contreras, who both operated in the centre of the midfield as playmakers in support of the lone striker. Their vision, technical skills and overall workrate made them key figures on their teams.

Thirty-six goals were scored in the 16 games, for an average of 2.25 goals per game. A significant difference from the 2004 tournament, when 53 goals were scored, for an average of 3.44 goals per game.

The Maple Leafs and the Chapines both had difficulty scoring goals, with Canada scoring five of their seven goals directly or indirectly from set plays, and Guatemala being shut out in three of their five games. The Maple Leafs also conceded four of their six goals from set plays.

Twelve teams failed to score in games, and two of the top four teams, Honduras and Guatemala, failed to average more than one goal a game. Ironically, Mexico was the only team to average more than two goals a game, and they were eliminated at the group stage. They were involved in a remarkable goal fest when eleven of the thirty-six total goals, (31%) were scored in an exciting double-header at the Home Depot Center on 16 March. Defences dominated, with the 36 goals coming from 380 goal attempts, (10% success rate) in which 177 were on target. Tournament champion Honduras had 71 goal attempts, of which 34 were on target and four goals were scored. In comparison, the USA had 78 goal attempts, of which 32 were on target and six goals were scored. GENERAL PLAY

Fans at Carson’s Home Depot Center

Five of the six other teams utilised a flexible 4-4-2 system of play. This, using a zonal back four, usually supplemented by a front sweeper and a more attackminded triumvirate of players behind the striking duo. Panama was probably the most sophisticated team tactically in the tournament, with Alexandre Guimaraes using a variety of combinations, ranging from a 3-4-3 system in the opening game against Honduras, to a 4-3-1-2 against the USA and a 3-4-1-2 in the final game against Cuba. The Canaleros often changed their system in the course of the game, as did several other teams when there was a need to adapt, due to the state of the game. Overall, all the teams exhibited a tactical sophistication. The greatest challenge being to Raul Gonzalez, the Cuban coach, after the departure of seven of his players following the opening game. Gonzalez only had 10 players available for the game against Honduras.

Twenty-six goals came from open play, with 9 goals the result of flank play and 10 goals coming from combined play and actions in central areas of the field. Six goals came courtesy of solo performances, with no better examples than the remarkable gamewinning 40-yard shot by Leonel Saint-Preux for Haiti against Canada and the ‘golazo’ by Georgie Welcome of Honduras, that proved to be the winner in extra time of the final against the USA. Several of the goals came following goalmouth scrambles with players taking advantage of defensive miscues. Goalkeeping mistakes were, however, few and far between in the tournament. Overall, the standard of goalkeeping was very good, with the 124 saves and 36 goals conceded a fair reflection of the quality of the custodians. Seven goalkeepers had a goalsagainst average of one goal a game or less, with the excellent Kevin Hernandez of Honduras having four shutouts and a 0.18 average. The only goal that he conceded was a penalty kick for the USA and he was a unanimous selection for the All-Tournament Team. Johnny Placide’s performance in the one-sided contest against Mexico deserves to be mentioned. The over-worked Haitian goalkeeper faced 25 shots and 48 crosses, conceded 5 goals, but saved a penalty to prevent Mexico from progressing into the semi-finals.

SET PLAYS The packed defences either prevented or blocked many goal-scoring attempts, but they also resulted in goals being conceded through deflections, as was the case with the goals by Hendry Thomas for Honduras against Panama, and by the Cuban, Roberto Linares against the USA. The angled shot by Freddy Adu, the talented US striker, also got past the Cuban goalkeeper, through a crowd of players, in the opening game of the tournament.

Ten goals in the tournament came from standard situations: (set plays) three the result of penalty kicks and four from corner kicks. The USA and Mexico averaged the highest number of corner kicks of all the teams – 54 out of a total of 129. Canada was the most effective however, scoring two goals from a total of 13 kicks, both in the game against Guatemala. In general, teams defended well against

There were some well-crafted goals following combined play and penetrating passes. The ‘killer pass’ from Tyler Hemming enabled Will Johnson to score a fine goal for Canada against Guatemala, and Panama’s Reggie Arosemena set up Nelson Barahona for a well-taken goal against Cuba. Guatemala also scored two of their three goals by virtue of quality through-balls. It resulted in Marvin Avila scoring the only goal of the game against Haiti and Jean Marquez setting up Carlos Villa for a welltaken goal against Mexico. Interesting to note that 25% (9) of the goals scored were from outside the penalty area, with no better example than the well-placed strike by Canada’s Tosaint Ricketts against Guatemala. This in addition to the solo efforts by Saint-Preux, Welcome and Adu, previously mentioned in the report. Flank play resulted in some well-taken goals, the highlight being the superb volley by Alain Gustave for Haiti in the game against Canada. The USA, along with Honduras, was the most effective in this aspect of the games. Sacha Kljestan showed excellent foot skills to convert a well-placed cross from Stuart Holden for the third goal of the semi-final game against Canada. In general, the quality of crossing was lacking in many teams, and all too often, balls were played into areas that were easily defended by the goalkeeper and his team mates. On several occasions, low crosses played with swerve and in behind defenders were not accompanied by quality runs by attacking players into the areas in front of the goal. Mexico, in the one-sided contest against Haiti, took a total of 48 crosses, only three of which resulted in goals. Mexico did, however, score the only headed goal in general play when Cesar Villaluz scored with diving header for the opening goal against Haiti.

corner kicks, but it was still interesting to note that the winning goal for Guatemala in the game against Mexico came when the tall Maynor Lopez took advantage of poor marking to score with a wellplaced header. Leonel Duarte scored similar goal with a near-post header for Cuba against Panama. Teams were also generally well-organized on free kicks. Although, Guatemala did make a key mistake in setting up a wall against Canada that resulted in a goal by Will Johnson. The USA were always a danger when taking free kicks in and around the penalty area, because of the ability of Freddy Adu. The talented Adu scored two of the three USA goals against Canada with superbly placed free kicks. Adu also scored one of his four goals as a penalty kick, and overall, the USA had three of the five kicks awarded in regulation time; Mexico being awarded the other two kicks. Penalty kicks proved to be a problem for Guatemala in the semi-final and third-place games. In both games, the match had to be decided on penalty kicks and in both games Guatemala lost out to Honduras and Canada.

the All-Tournament Team. A variety of players were used in the wide midfield positions, with Tosaint Ricketts the most effective on the right side, with his speed and technical ability. Jacob Lensky and Kyle Hall, who scored a spectacular goal in the group game against Guatemala, alternated on the left side. Up front, the tall, strong Andrazes Ornoch was used as the lone striker who worked hard both on and off the ball, but was often lacking support from his midfield players. Overall, the Maple Leafs were not an effective attacking team, as evidenced by the 36 goal attempts in five games and the fact that 5/7 goals were from set plays. The Maple Leafs started off with an impressive result against the favoured Mexican team, suffered a disappointing loss against the surprising team from Haiti and qualified for the semi-finals with the convincing win over an under strength Guatemala. Freddy Adu and his USA team mates were deserving winners in the important semi-final game, but the team recovered well to edge out Guatemala in the third place match. Canada was hoping to return to the Olympic Games after a 24-year absence, and, this time around, received a bye to the final round. Former national team player Nick Dasovic was in charge of an experienced team that contained 10 players who were with clubs in Europe. In addition, 6 other players could not get their release from clubs. As a result, preparation was very limited, with the full squad only assembling 32 hours before their opening game against Mexico. Goalkeeper Josh Wagenaar was one of four players who was without a club prior to the competition. He proved to be a steady and competent custodian, as did David Monsalve, who made an all-important save in the shoot-out win over Guatemala in the third place match. The back line of four players was anchored by Dejan Jakovic and team captain Andrew Hainault, who complemented each other well with their overall play. Dasovic alternated his fullbacks with Diaz Kambere starting off at left back, before being replaced by the Nikolas Ledgerwood and Graham Ramalho combination in the final three games. All proved to be competent defenders, but were limited in an attacking role. The overall shape of the team in defence was very good and in that regard, the two defensive midfielders, Tyler Hemming and Keegan Ayre, played a key role with their workrate and positional play in the 4-2-3-1 formation. The key player in the centre of the midfield was undoubtedly Will Johnson, who impressed with his overall workrate, competitive play and goal scoring ability. (Three goals) He was selected as a member of

Overall, a good tournament for a physical, competitive and well-organized Canadian team; the challenge being suitable preparation for competitions of this nature in the years ahead. The fact that many national team players are with clubs outside North America will make it a difficult proposition System of Play 4-2-3-1 with two defensive central midfielders. USA. Francisco Carrazana was a more than adequate replacement with his workrate and passing ability. Roberto Linares played up front in the opening game, but a red card meant that he missed the second game against Honduras, when Cuba was only able to field 10 players; a rare occurrence at this level of the game. Yasnier Rosales was also used as an attacker, but had a limited impact in the two games that he played. Overall, a very difficult tournament for the Leones Del Caribe, following the departure of seven players, after the excellent draw against the USA in the opening game. The 10-man squad defended well in the second game against the eventual champions, Honduras, but were unable to contain Panama’s attack in the final game, when fatigue took its toll. The challenge will be in recovering from this event for the important World Cup qualifying games late this year. System of Play 4-1-3-2 in opening game v. USA – 4-4-1 (with 10 players) in second game. 3-5-2 in the final game vs. Panama. Cuba, the most successful Caribbean nation at the Olympic Games, was hoping to make their third appearance in Beijing. The team boasted an impressive qualifying record, winning all five games and scoring 25 goals, whilst only conceding a single goal. The experienced Raul Gonzalez had the advantage of having home-based players in the squad, with five from the Cienfuegos Club. The Cuban team suffered following the departure of seven players after the opening game – a 1:1 draw versus USA. Goalkeeper José Miranda played well in the opening game and his replacement, Arael Arguelles, also impressed with an under strength team in the remaining two games. The back four in the opening game contained Erlys Baro at right back and Juan Martinez on the opposite flank, and both proved to be effective attackers. Martinez moved into central defence with the departure of the excellent Yenier Bermudez and the solid Yendry Diaz. Alianni Urguelles, a tough ball winner and Raicel Pozo, with his aerial ability, were their replacements, along with Armando Coroneaux, who also played in midfield. The versatile Livan Vasconcelos played as a front sweeper in the opening game and moved into a more attacking role in the remaining games. Right midfielder Enrique Villauruttia impressed both on and off the ball in all three games, as did Leonel Duarte, who was used more in a midfield role in the final two games. His overall superb technical skills resulted in a deserved selection as a member of the All-Tournament Team. Yordany Alvarez was another key member of the midfield that impressed in the opening game against the

game against Haiti. Up front, Carlos Villa scored an important goal against Mexico, but had limited success as the lone striker in the 4-2-3-1 formation. The tall Maynor Lopez came on as a substitute in games and scored the winning goal against Mexico, with a fine header from a corner kick. Overall, it was a very good tournament for the Chapines, who proved to be a well-organised and tactically astute team. An opening win over Haiti, followed by an excellent win over Mexico meant that Kenton could rest his key players for the all-important semifinal against Honduras. The 5-0 defeat by Canada in the final group game, was not indicative of the difference in the two teams. The heart-breaking loss on penalty kicks in the semi-final was followed by another shoot-out loss to Canada in the 3rd place match. Several players from this talented squad should become integral members of the team that will be involved in World Cup qualifying late this year. The future looks bright for football in Guatemala following the performances in this tournament. Seoul, 1988 was the last appearance by Guatemala in the Olympic Games. Hopes were high for this squad, especially since they had eliminated Costa Rica in the qualifiers. An ironic situation, since the current Guatemalan team is coached by Rodrigo Kenton, who had taken the Ticos to Athens in 2004. Kenton had been in charge for the past 18 months and had conducted an intensive preparation program with a squad that had no foreign-based players. Six players were with the Municipal Club and five with CSD Communicaciones. Team Captain Ricardo Jerez played every minute of every game and proved to be a more than competent all-round goalkeeper, who made key saves in games, especially in the surprise win over Mexico. In front of him, Wilson Lalin and Christian Noriega were tall, dominant defenders and they received good support from Carlos Castrillo in the right back position and Rafael Morales on the opposite flank. Castrillo, an effective defender, also got forward in attack and his all-round play earned him a spot on the All-Tournament Team. The five-man midfield contained two defensive midfielders: Manuel Leon and the tall, physical Jean Marquez. Both impressed with their workrate and competitive play. The talented Jose Contreras was the playmaker in the centre of the midfield and was a deserved member of the All-Tournament Team, because of his vision and all-round technical skills. The hard-working Marco Papa played on the right side of the midfield with the more attack-minded Marvin Àvila on the opposite flank. Àvila caused problems as a midfielder or attacker and scored the only goal of the

against Canada and scored with a superb volley, one of the goals of the tournament. Haiti impressed in the opening two group games, especially the 2:1 win over Canada, but came up against a Mexican team that had to score at least 5 unanswered goals to advance to the semi-finals. It resulted in a one-way affair, highlighted by superb display of goalkeeping by Placide that prevented a rout. Les Bicolores were the youngest team in the tournament, with an aveage age of 20 years, 10 months. Seven players were under 20 years of age, with the back-up goalkeeper, Shelson Dorleans, at only 17 years, five months, the youngest player in the tournament. Valuable lessons for this young squad and for a country that has made great strides at all levels of the game in recent years. Vive le Football Haitienne! System of Play Flexible 4-4-2 in opening two games 5-3-2 v. Mexico in final group game

Haiti was hoping to make its first trip to the Olympic Games, this after defeating a strong Jamaican team in the qualifying round. Wilner Étienne was in charge of a squad that contained several graduates from the FHF Football Academy. The squad, mainly home-based, was reinforced with 5 players with clubs outside Haiti. Goalkeeper Johnny Placide plays with the French team Le Havre and his experience, coupled with his ability, made him a key member of the team. An honourable mention in the All-Tournament Team, he had a superb game in the one-sided contest against Mexico. In front of him, the zonal back four was anchored by the tall, disciplined Parnel Guerrier and the steady Lescinel Jean François, who covered each other well. Judelin Aveska was a tall, physical defender on the right side, who was given a red card after only 29 minutes in the game against Mexico. On the opposite side, the attackminded Ednerson Raymond impressed with his steady play and was ever-present in all games. Alain Vubert was the defensive base of the midfield diamond. In front of him, the technical skills of Sony Norde made him an effective play-maker with a good workrate. The tall Fabrice Noel played either as a right midfield player, or as a forward with James Marcelin on the opposite flank. Leonel Saint-Preux was the more effective of the two strikers, scored two goals and impressed observers with his tremendous workrate, especially in the upset win over Canada. He was an honourable mention in the All-Tournament Team. Bidrece Azor was his usual partner up front, but Alain Gustave came as a substitute

a variety of combinations. Jose Guity was utilised on occasion, but it was left to Georgie Wilson Welcome to score one of the goals of the tournament with his magnificent long-range shot for the only goal of the game in final against the USA. Luis Lopez was also used upfront on occasion. The Catrachos deserved to win the tournament. This, by virtue of their consistent play and the fact that they made the fewest mistakes. Strong defensively, they did not allow a goal from open play in the five games, and their overall organisation did not allow their opponents to dominate the all-important midfield areas of the field.

Honduras was hoping to make their second appearance at the Olympic Games after qualifying for Sydney 2000. Only the fourth time a team from UNCAF had qualified. The team had reached the final round this time around, following the tournament in Panama. Alexis Mendoza was in charge of a well-balanced squad, with all the players with clubs in the competitive Honduran League. Goalkeeper Kevin Hernandez had an outstanding tournament, only conceding one goal, a penalty kick, in five games. He impressed with his all-round confident play and was a unanimous choice for the AllTournament Team. The back line of four defenders was compact and well-organised, with Quiarol Arzu and Erick Norales strong, uncompromising central defenders. David Molina was a sturdy, well-disciplined right back and on the opposite side, the all-round technical play and mobility of Oscar Morales gained him a deserved spot as a member of the All-Tournament Team. Hendry Thomas, who scored two goals, anchored a well-balanced midfield that impressed with its high workrate, good possession and support play. The creative and skilful Rigoberto Padilla caused problems on the right side of the midfield whilst on the opposite flank, the talented Ramon Nuñez and Jefferson Bernardez worked hard in both attack and defence. The vision, skills and speed of Marvin Sanchez made him a marquee player in an attacking role in midfield. Attacking play involved quick counter-attacks and effective passing to serve the two attackers. There was

The team started with a late goal and narrow win over Panama, followed by a relatively easy win over a 10man Cuban team. The USA prevailed with a penalty goal to take the top spot in the group and penalties proved to be a factor in the shoot-out win over UNCAF rivals Guatemala, in the all-important semi-final game. The team gained some revenge from the defeat in the group game to edge out the US in overtime of a competitive final game. Honduras will be hoping to improve on their 10th place spot in the 2000 Olympics. It could be possible, given the fine team performances in this qualifying tournament. System of Play Flexible 4-4-2 with zonal defence Strengths Well-organized team – understood game plan Won ball in midfield through quick tackling Good preparation for games Goalkeeping – only conceded one goal (penalty kick) in 510 minutes of play Weaknesses Moderate finishing most times. 2008 CONCACAF Men’s Olympic Qualifying

It was a disappointing tournament for one of the favourites. An opening tie against a physical and competitive Canadian team was followed by a surprise defeat against a well-organised Guatemalan team. The final group game proved to be a remarkable game, given that Tricolores had to score six unanswered goals to advance, following Canada’s crushing 5:0 win over Guatemala. Despite outshooting their opponents 24-14, and taking 48 crosses in the game against opponents who played for 61 minutes with only 10 men, one of the favourites in the tournament was eliminated. It is a rare occurrence when a Mexican National team fails to advance from the group stages of a CONCACAF competition. It might have been a different story if Sanchez was able to utilise some of his key players, who were based in Europe. The defeat by Guatemala was the end of a 16-year unbeaten run in this competition.

Mexico was hoping to maintain a 21-game unbeaten streak in CONCACAF qualification that has seen them represented in three of the last four Olympic Tournaments. World Cup coach Hugo Sanchez was in charge of an experienced home-based squad, but was still missing several key players who were not released by their European clubs. The confident and competitive Guillermo Ochoa was in goal in all three games. In front of him, Sanchez opted for a back four in the first two games, with Hugo Ayala and Julio Dominguez strong and steady central defenders. The attack-minded Francisco Gamboa played on the right side of the defence with Efrain Velarde on the opposite flank. In the final group game, Gamboa was moved into midfield in an attacking 3-4-3 formation. In midfield, Patricio Araujo played as a defensive central midfielder in the opening two games. Sergio Ávila played in a more attacking role, but was unimpressive as a playmaker. Flank play was generally good with Pablo Barrera, on the right side, impressive with his technical skills, as was Edgar Castillo on the opposite flank. The team made good use of width to open up the field with a controlled build-up and good use of the flanks. Up front, Cesar Villaluz proved to be a fast, mobile attacker, with the strong and physical Luis Angel Landin his most effective partner. Both players received honourable mentions for the All-Tournament Team.

The skilful and speedy Reggie Arosemena was the most dangerous attacker in and around the penalty area. He was usually assisted by the powerful Gabriel Torres, although Edwin Aguilar played and scored twice in the final game. The Canaleros had little to show by way of result, as compared to the way they played. Simple errors in the opening two games caused them to lose vital points. A last-minute goal in the opener against the eventual champions, Honduras, and a penalty kick goal against the other finalist, team USA. Two narrow 1:0 defeats against the two teams that will advance to the Olympic Games. The team finished the tournament on a good note, with the convincing 4:1 win over a weakened Cuban team. Several of the players could well figure in the World cup team. The tournament was yet another indication of the progress being made in Panamanian football. One of the younger teams in the tournament. A team for the future. Panama, a country which has never qualified for the Olympic Games, gained a berth in the final qualifying round by edging out a strong Costa Rican team in the playoff round. World Cup Coach, Alexandre Guimaraes, was in charge of a squad of experienced home-based players, supplemented with six players with clubs in Mexico and South America.

System of Play A variety of flexible formations - 3-4-3 vs. Honduras 4-3-1-2 vs. USA - 3-4-1-2 vs. Cuba

José Calderon played in goal in the first two games. A good shot stopper, he read the game well. Gilmar Torres played in the final game. Tactically, Guimaraes used a variety of formations with either three or four defenders.

Weaknesses Finishing moderate Careless defending at times

Reinaldo Anderson was a key figure with his solid defending and aerial ability. He worked well with the steady Adolfo Machado, another competent defender. Erick Vasquez was a good ball winner on the left flank and on the opposite side of the field, Roman Torres showed his ability in both attack and defence; displays that earned him an honourable mention in the AllTournament Team. The midfield was especially sharp, with good mobility and ball possession. Eduardo Jimenez was effective in both attack and defence down the right flank and Jean Cedeno showed similar qualities down the opposite flank. Cristian Vega worked hard both on and off the ball in the ‘engine room’ at the centre of the midfield and he was ably assisted by Manuel Bonilla, who showed similar qualities. The key player in the midfield, however, was All-Tournament selection, Nelson Barahona, a talented playmaker who impressed with his aerial play and passing ability.

member of the All-Tournament Team. Stuart Holden also operated in this area of the field and caused problem with his overlapping play. Up front, the ‘A’ team (Altidore and Adu) were dominant, especially Freddy Adu, the top scorer in the tournament, with 4 goals and a member of the AllTournament team. A marquee player, with his overall skills and goal-scoring ability, he was missed in the final game against Honduras. Overall, it was a very good tournament for the Stars and Stripes. The team recovered from the disappointing tie in the opening game against Cuba, performed well as a team in 2 narrow wins over Honduras and Panama, and saved their best performance for the allimportant semi-final against Canada. Two well-taken free kicks by Freddy Adu proved to be the difference against their Northern neighbours. An understrength team, missing several regulars was defeated by an extra-time goal in the final against Honduras.

Host nation USA has made 12 appearances in the Olympics, but has won only one of eleven final qualifying tournaments. Former Polish National team player and an experienced player and coach in Major League soccer, Peter Nowak, was in charge this time around. He was able to call on an experienced squad with 12 players with Major League Soccer Clubs and eight playing in Europe. The tall and dominant Chris Seitz and Dominic Cervi shared the goaltending duties and provided a solid base for the defence with their overall steady play. Patrick Ianni and Michael Orozco combined well in the middle of the zonal defence, with Orozco earning AllTournament team honours by virtue of his technical skills and positional play. On the right side of the defence, Kamani Hill proved to be a steady defender and when Marvell Wynne played, he impressed with his attacking play and speedy recovery. The left-sided defenders were more conservative, but both Nathan Sturgis and Hunter Freeman were steady performers with their support play and discipline. The USA was very well served in midfield. Sacha Kljestan and Dax McCarty were outstanding with their overall play in both attack and defence in the centre of the midfield, and both were deserving members of the All-Tournament Team: McCarty on the team and Kljestan as an honourable mention. Eddie Gaven, by virtue of his passing and shooting ability, was an effective left-sided midfield player. On the opposite flank, Maurice Edu showed his ability both on and off the ball, as well as his leadership qualities, and even performed well in central defence. He was a deserving
