2012 RACING AWARDS FIA’s inability to arrange their F1 races – even now they are fiddling about with their 2013 calendar – has a serious impact on those, like us, who are at the end of the food chain, so to speak. The Goodwood Festival of Speed has changed its date in the last couple of days so it isn’t surprising that others have to move things around as a result. For the moment – but we hope the last time – the accompanying table gives the final list of events for our two Ferrari Series.

THE 2012 RACERS PRESENTATION DINNER The culmination of the season’s circuit racing was the traditional Presentation Dinner, which this year was held at the Oxford Belfry Hotel on Saturday, 17th November. Close to 90 competitors and their guests, sponsors, preparers and Club members assembled in a nicely decorated private banqueting room and enjoyed a great evening of fun and frivolity. There were a number of special guests. Our President, Jack Sears, and his lady, Diana, were there as well as John Kemp and Melanie – representing Ferrari NE – Shaun Marriott from Pirelli, and Tony and Jane Willis. We had a couple of quiz challenges: the main one, which tested knowledge of several areas of motorsport, had three prizes all of which consisted of model Ferraris complete with the necessary tool (a small screwdriver) for assembly. The other quiz, with a Ferrari cap as the prize, was set by Peter and Suzanne Everingham. I can’t remember who the successful winners were but I recall that the preparers acquitted themselves very well which is a source of comfort for those who entrust their machinery to them. As we have done on several previous occasions, we specially commissioned a batch of leather credit card holders from Schedoni, who are responsible for the upholstery of your Ferrari. These were beautifully emblazoned with the prancing horse and the words ‘2012 Pilota’, and every registered driver who competed this season received one. They were

OTHER AWARDS Spirit of the Series (PFfc): William Moorwood Il Spirito Della Seria (PFO): David Hathaway David Preston Trophy (for Preparer of the Year): FF Corse Wilkinson Trophy for Circuit Driver of the Year: Gary Eastwood presented by Pirelli’s Shaun Marriott. A groaning table of silverware was off-loaded later in the evening, with Jack Sears doing a yeoman’s job of presentation. Fortunately the majority of the principal award winners were present to receive their awards. In addition to these trophies, Anne presented a number of other prizes in recognition of all the valued assistance we get from a number of key people. The list of 2012 award winners is shown here in the accompanying table and, further on in this issue, we have assembled a montage of photographs taken by Simon Cooke during the evening.

THANKS TO EVERYBODY! Anne and I want to thank everyone who contributed so generously to the fantastic

presents we were given at the Racers’ End of Season Dinner. Not only did we receive that beautiful arrangement of flowers, a beautiful and original Ferrari silk scarf and the case of incomparable Chateau Clark, our joy was complete with the amazing gift of a Michelin Star Dining gift box. This wonderful present allows us to enjoy dining at any one of 25 Michelin star restaurants in the UK together with the bonus of overnight accommodation to ensure we aren’t arrested on the way home. We are having fun deciding on which hostelry to choose but be assured, when we finally make our choice we shall drink a toast to everybody who made it possible! We always say that ours is the best job in the Club and it is at times like this that we know we are right! Thank you all once again.

FF CORSE We are delighted to announce that FF Corse, the principal preparers of Ferraris in the UK, are once again sponsoring the Pirelli Ferrari Open Series in 2013. Last season Anthony Cheshire’s organisation did a magnificent job in looking after an impressive number of Ferrari drivers’ cars. Their reputation is unmatched and, as someone who is in close contact with them at the circuits, I can vouch for their hugely professional in-depth approach to racing. Their customers are very fortunate to

have such a competent preparer looking after their race Ferraris.

AUTOSPORT INTERNATIONAL A reminder that the Autosport International Racing Car Show is on 10-13th January at the Birmingham NEC. Many readers will be attending – most on ‘trade’ day on the Thursday. When you are there don’t forget to call in at the Pirelli stand where, for the first time, one of our Pirelli Ferrari Open 458 Challenge cars will be on display. If you need some technical advice on the car we are sure one of the Pirelli Girls will be able to help. If they can’t, well it will be fun asking them anyway!

If competitors subscribe in advance of registering (to make sure they don’t miss any news) for whichever series they are intending to compete in, the amount of the sub can be deducted for the registration amount. For next year we are making a New Year’s Resolution: the deadline for copy will be the last day of the relevant month to which the issue relates e.g. for the May issue it will be 31st May. In this way we aim to get CompRes out in a far more timely fashion than we have managed this year. We look forward to contributors’ co-operation to achieve our goal.

RA’s HILLCOMMENT Limbo Land is what this time of year feels like. I guess as I write these notes that all CompRes readers have stacks to do in the run up to Christmas, but meanwhile there are, sadly, no thoughts of getting ready for the next hillclimb/race meeting or what needs doing on the car before that next outing. The gritting lorries have already been out here in Suffolk and the local roads are really muddy as the sugar beet trucks tear up the soft verges. It’s all sufficient to discourage Ferrari use and I was very relieved to put a dozen or so miles on my 328 prior to hibernation on a fine day just before all this started. Doune Done for the meantime as you will have noticed if you read Richard Prior’s notes in the last issue of

CompRes. A clash with Gurston Down combined with the dwindling entry level made this inevitable, but it is all the same most regrettable. Lothian Car Club, the Doune organisers, really made us welcome and along with the support of the Scottish Area Groups and Edinburgh Ferrari dealer, Graypaul, had developed this in to a very Ferrari flavoured weekend. Due to Easter being early in 2013 we shall also miss out on Bouley Bay which, along with Doune, is amongst the most exciting hills you will ever climb. I hope that both are back in our 2014 programme so that more PFHC drivers can experience the challenge they provide, not to mention the fantastic scenery. Finali Mondiali 2012 or World Finals for the Ferrari Coppa Shell and Ferrari Trofeo Pirelli –

that’s the assorted 458 Challenge series - were held very late this year. Usually run in October, on account of the late close out of the F1 calendar the event was held on December 1st and 2nd in Valencia at the local Ricardo Tormo circuit just outside of town. All the great and good were there with most of our friends from Ferrari North Europe and many of the UK Ferrari dealer people. The track activity was similar to that seen at the recent Ferrari Racing Days at Silverstone, with the Corse Cliente cars droning around, but sadly no Pirelli Ferrari Open racing to liven things up! The 458 Challenge cars did, however, put on a good show and in the thick of it was our chum Anthony Cheshire and his FF Corse team, running cars under the Stratstone

thick of it was our chum Anthony Cheshire and his FF Corse team, running cars under the Stratstone banner. Alonso and Massa were much in evidence at the Finali Mondiali, giving interviews and some entertaining on-track activity in their 2012 F1 cars. The noise was on the cusp of ear bleed, and they put on a good show with some fake jousting over a good number of laps, culminating in the routine doughnuts right in front of where we were watching – the cars completely disappearing in clouds of smoke. Whilst all this had been going on Massa seemed to be really enjoying himself whilst Alonso was deadpan and looking bored – maybe still not over the recent results in Brazil. Fernando barely cracked a smile all day and when Massa was talking seemed more interested in poking his iPhone (see pic)

RA quite likes his 458 Italia’s lavish array of knobs and buttons now he has got the hang of them.

F1 Steering Wheels are amazing and I am sure most of us wonder how the drivers cope with all those knobs and buttons whilst needing to look where they are going at the same time. This leads me to the steering wheels being fitted to current Ferrari road cars which, whilst quite simple compared to the F1 wheel, do carry an awful lot of buttons and switches. One or two magazine road testers and Alonso and Massa at the press conference at the some Club Finali Mondiali event. A clearly bored Fernando members, both seemed more interested in fiddling with his owners and on iPhone than engaging with his audience. demo drives, have been very critical of these Why was RA in Spain you controls, suggesting they should may be asking, especially as I be relegated back to the dash or never venture far from Suffolk. I wherever. As a 458 owner who was with our new Club Secretary, incompetently fumbles the radio Gary Dearn, attending the and cruise controls even on BMW International Clubs meeting on steering wheels, I was initially December 3rd. This is held every apprehensive, but now, after year around the time of the Finali considerable 458 experience and Mondiali - three years ago I was a few days with the awesome FF, in Valencia in October at the I can honestly say that these same meeting with Peter controls work well and are not at Everingham when Ferrari wheeled all difficult in practice. Like most out their new signing, Fernando things it is just a question of Alonso – he was not smiling then, familiarity. either!

Winter Tyres have received much attention in recent years with the more frequent snow and ice. The prevalence of large diameter road wheels and ridiculously low profile tyres have helped create the need for such tyres. Even SUVs are blighted and many of these, although four wheel drive, are not much cop in snow with their 20 inch plus wheels. My everyday motoring is in both BMW and Volvo cars, and of course the BMWs, particularly if M Sport derivatives, are pathetic when the going gets slippery. I have a left-over 1998 Volvo V70, which with front wheel drive and relatively high profile tyres works great on snow. A few days ago I fitted this venerable machine with winter tyres - I know it will be formidable and am really looking forward to a hard winter. Jon Goodwin is bracing himself for a comeback from his 2012 sabbatical and hopes to rejoin us for the next PFHC season. His long awaited 250SWB replica should be finished and you can bet it will be competitive. These early Ferraris weighed not a lot and are really quite small compared with the more modern tipos – attributes that will help Jon greatly in our motorsport discipline – not that he needs it!

CompRes 5

Life’s too Short to drink cheap wine or so my wife keeps telling me, and it also occurred to me recently that maybe life is too short to drive diesels. Most of my driving in recent years is in diesels, and whilst I love the less frequent fuel stops, 50 mpg, and great slug of low down torque, they are still coarse and really do need an eight speed auto box because of the very narrow power band. Maybe my mistake is driving manual diesels. Automotive Obesity is all too obvious nowadays as each new model is bigger that its predecessor, though all credit to Ferrari for making the new F12 a bit smaller than the monster 599. At one time all this was said to be down to the need to build in more safety features to meet crash testing legislation, but I wonder whether the high incidence of human obesity is influencing design, not to mention each new generation seems to be getting taller. Recently I did a day’s duty on the Club stand at the NEC Classic Car Show where there was a Testarossa amongst a number of tastefully decorated non-red Ferraris on display. It struck me that the Testarossa is not really that big by today’s standards – a good illustration of the way things have been going.

Jumping out the Trap is all important for PFHC runners. It is no good losing half a second off the line when this can easily cost you several places in the finishing order. Back in the early days of the PFHC, the 308 was the most popular tipo and produced reasonably good start times. Most of us used to just dump the clutch at around 4000rpm ensuring very low wear rate. We used to talk of the window of opportunity between excessive wheelspin and bog down, and on some tipos this could be very narrow – often the larger ones. Along came the 328 and this, with its torquey injected engine, had a really big window, proving to be an easy car for making good starts. The big surprise, looking back, has been the F355, now probably or at least most consistently the fastest starter. When the 355 first appeared from the 1995 season it proved really difficult to get off the line, with 064 feet times nearer three seconds than two. The window appeared very narrow and this problem seemed to go on for sometime with the 328s always having the edge. Nowadays, 355s regularly get in the low twosecond bracket and I find with mine it’s much easier to get a really quick start time than with the 328.

I am a material person and I need your news for this column - you can tell from this month’s offering, where I have banged on about subjects not much related to speed hillclimbing, that I am desperately short of material. Please give me a call or send an email about anything to do with or related to our series or drivers, including yourself. The Festive Season should be nearly upon as you read this CompRes and I would like to take the opportunity of wishing you all a Very Happy Christmas and New Year.

The 328GTB’s once unsurpassed fast start abilities seem to have been overtaken by the F355. Here, RA gets uncomfortably close to Doune’s unyielding Armco barriers in his famous ‘Rat Car’.

WAS MY first full season of racing. The car was the 1970 Group 4 Competizione Daytona, bought back from long term ownership in the USA in early 2011. Originally converted to Group 4 specification from a road car in the 1970’s by Swedish racer Ulf Boman, and campaigned extensively in Europe, it had resided in the USA since the early 1980’s after a crash at the Bahamas Speed week in 1984. Our first outing was at Oulton Park in May, where we were overwhelmed by the friendly welcome from John and Anne and the other Pirelli Ferrari formula classic competitors. It was great fun dicing with Tris Simpson for a few laps, and it was a landmark race as the yellow novice cross finally came off the car at the end of it – success!

After an outing at the 4-hour Monza 1000 kms race in June (what an amazing circuit . . . and

one lap . . . Overall, it has been a blast. Very friendly reception, and a great crowd of competitors combined with well-mannered racing and world-class circuits. We finished every race, had some class wins, and made some good noise. And, of course, there are plenty of skills to improve on for the future. We’ll be back for 2013!

pipes at full chat), we approached Spa-Francorchamps with some trepidation due to the weather, not to mention the complexity of the circuit. It suited the Daytona perfectly, with Eau Rouge and Blanchimont living up to their formidable reputation. Both required a ‘confidence lift’ (involving pressing the centre pedal briefly). We made up lots of time in the race, and narrowly avoided scorched front paintwork from a certain Mr Cartwright’s exhaust flames on the overrun. I must focus on overtaking him next time . . . Donington Park, in August, we encountered gearbox problems in qualifying, putting us on the back of the grid for both races. Ian Gwynne from BGM Sport fixed the problem overnight (a broken bolt) and it was super overtaking experience working through the field to finish in a respectable position. I only wish the race had been a bit longer! The Nürburgring GP circuit in October proved a tricky test – damp and greasy conditions, and a technical first half of the lap

In the beginning . . . This photograph of 365GTB/4 Ch # 13219, taken in the ‘80s at Cognac when owned by the Swede, Ulf Boman, shows just how faithful to the original Tim Summers’s car is today. Boman is on the extreme right of the picture.
