SPA-FRANCORCHAMPS
Some of you have asked if there is any pre-event testing on the Thursday but unfortunately the organisers, the ADAC, have advised us that they have been unable to arrange this.
DONINGTON PARK Entry forms for this 2-day race meeting on 18/19 August will be posted out in the next few days. As you may know, we have now arranged for our Classic series to join the Open on both days. On the Saturday menu is a qualifying session for each series followed by a 20-minute race for PFfc and a 25-minute race for the Open Ferraris. A second race of similar duration is scheduled for each series on the Sunday. Because we have just single
Entry packs have now been posted out to all registered competitors for this major overseas event, on 20-22 July. The closing date - 29th June is now very close and it is important to get your entry to Anne in good time. Competitors should note that, as explained in detail in the March issue of CompRes, it is now necessary for all drivers to obtain specific authorisation from the MSA to compete abroad. We shall be doing this by submitting a JUNE list of all our Ferrari competitors who are racing at Spa to the MSA no later than three weeks before the JULY event. The MSA will then issue blanket approval to us for the drivers on the list. Competitors must be aware that WITHOUT THIS APPROVAL THEY WILL BE UNABLE TO RACE. That is why it is doubly important to submit your entry to Anne without delay! As well as dealing with your entry you need, of course, to make your AUGUST accommodation and travel arrangements. And don’t forget to apply for your tickets for the special Ferrari Dinner on the Friday evening, at the superb Hotel de la Source.

qualification periods, the grids on Sunday will be determined by the second fastest qualifying times from the previous day. Competitors should note that entries for this meeting are to be returned direct to our hosts, BARC, rather than to us. Entries received by them after the closing date will incur a late entry fee, so be warned!

In last month’s issue we told you that Ben Cartwright was planning to tackle his first Triathlon, the UK Iron Man 70.3. We are delighted to report that Ben completed this gruelling challenge, finishing 179th out of over 2,000 athletes and ranking 39th in his age group. The first section was the 1.2 mile swim and Ben emerged from the water after 42 minutes in the lake. Then it was time to jump on the bike and tackle the 56 mile course, consisting of two laps round Exmoor including a 6,000 ft climb. He managed this stage in 3hrs 10mins. Ben then slipped on his trainers to start the half Marathon, a 3 lap course in hilly terrain with a 3,000ft
climb. The course went along an impressive road across a dam wall before heading back towards the race village and the finish line. Running is Ben’s strong point and he completed the run in an impressive 1hr 32minutes. In recognition of Ben’s terrific effort CompRes is sending a cheque to his charity, the Matlock Mencap Society. It is a very worthwhile cause and we hope that readers will generously support it.
FERRARI RACING DAYS Most Ferrari owners will have seen the well publicised details of the Ferrari Racing Days event at Silverstone on 14-16 September. Indeed, many will have received a personal invitation from their dealer, offering two complimentary weekend general entry tickets plus VIP parking for their Ferrari. The format of the event follows the pattern that Ferrari use at various European race venues throughout the year: rounds of the factory-run European Ferrari Challenge Trofeo Pirelli series, demonstrations of 599XX and FXX, and opportunities for Ferrari Clienti members to exercise their F1 cars. In addition, in cooperation with our Club, there will be a further attempt to break the Guinness World Record for the largest parade of Ferrari cars, with the aim of getting in excess of 500 cars on the track. What is different about this event at Silverstone is that in recognition of the fact that our UK Ferrari Owners’ Club is the only club in the world to run their own race series, the factory has included races for our Pirelli Ferrari Open. During early discussions with Ferrari NE, it was agreed to change the title of these races to ‘Ferrari Club Challenge’, to enable us to invite other Ferrari owners with suitable cars, both from the UK and abroad, to take part. We also endeavoured to include drivers of Ferraris running in our immensely successful Pirelli Ferrari formula classic in the invitation.
Despite our best efforts, Ferrari SpA have refused to include in the races any tipos over 20 years old. This effectively rules out all cars in our PFfc race series. Although I have not entirely given up in trying to persuade the factory that the addition of our older cars would enhance hugely the racing entertainment on the long Silverstone GP circuit, it rather looks like I am fighting a lost cause. It is Ferrari’s party and of course they can apply any conditions they wish. So, assuming that I am unsuccessful, the Ferrari Club Challenge races will constitute rounds 11 and 12 of the 2012 PFO, and we shall gather together as many guests, driving acceptable tipos, as possible to join them for this event. If you are a PFfc competitor I suggest you try to beg, borrow, but not, perhaps, steal, a suitable F355 Challenge or other race Ferrari, and join in the fun. The menu for the Ferrari Club Challenge drivers is a free 45 min test session on the Friday, and a 20 min qualifying session followed by a 30 minute race on both Saturday and on Sunday. The new Wing pits complex will be in operation and we shall be allocated our own pit boxes. Ferrari have promised to provide the trophies, which should be well worth racing for. We are current awaiting finalisation of some details by Ferrari NE and as soon as these are complete we shall be issuing an entry pack to all registered PFO competitors together with other owners who we know may be keen to join in.

LAP RECORDS Towards the end of this issue of CompRes you will find a list of all lap records at the various circuits that were current at the beginning of this season. The list covers our PFfc Classic series. It is the turn of the PFO next month.

RED CARS ARE BAD NEWS

With most Ferraris being red, there is some disturbing news about the paintwork. A recent survey by Halfords, the car accessories chain, reveals that red cars are most likely to be marked by bird droppings. Their study, which analysed 1140 cars in five British cities, found that 18% of red cars were targeted by birds compared with

Newcomer Stars at the Harewood May double header were undoubtedly to be found amongst the 360 Modena pilots. This tipo is not the easiest of Ferraris to compete with on the hills but both Caroline Cooper and Keith Anderson drove theirs brilliantly. Caroline in particular, on her first ever motorsport event, made strong progress over the two days, eventually getting down to an impressive mid-75 second run and finishing well up the chart. Judged by this first showing husband Jeff needs to watch out! Meanwhile Keith Anderson, still learning the joys of Ferrari driving, showed the skill and experience gained from previously competing at these sort of events with a fastest time of 67.75. He finished second

overall on Saturday, repeating this feat on Sunday and pushing Chris Butler back to third, a truly remarkable result. Late arrival for me at Harewood for the Saturday meeting just ten minutes before the official runs started. A two hundred mile journey that normally lasts three hours actually took nearly seven hours, but then I did do 350 miles on the way. My normally reliable F355 suffered the apparently familiar concern where the catalytic converter sensor decides it is overheating and shuts down one bank of cylinders. The 355 started playing up going past Cambridge and then Huntingdon, but healed up, on and off, when I pulled off the road and switched off. Whatever I tried did not last for long and eventually, near Grantham, I rang Richard Prior
and said I was not going to make the Saturday meeting. I turned around and headed home and the car worked perfectly! Near Newmarket, Club member Ian Button, who usually comes to Bouley Bay with us, has workshops and is also a F355 owner. I called him saying I was returning home and he said bring the car in and I will replace your cat sensor with one from my car. He duly did this in record time and I was soon on my way back north again – how’s that for service! Richard Prior had convinced the Harewood organisers that I would get there before the official runs started, and they obligingly let me run even though I had missed the morning’s practice. The Holman/Prior Deux Chevaux racing team had their initial shakedown sprint race with Photo: Jeff Cooper
Just like Formula 1 the PFHC this season has produced a great variety of results with many different winners. Andrew Holman, Richard Prior, both in F355s, and Mike Spicer (328GTB) have been making the running on cumulative points. However, over six rounds they only have two max points scores between them out of sixteen possibles. Significantly Chris Butler has entered just two meetings and taken two helpings of 20 pts. You can expect Holman to score strongly at the sprints coming up, and inevitably this will be one of those seasons where the title may go to the last round. There have been some interesting results amongst the Classic Cup runners and although Mike Spicer comfortable heads this section, it was the 308GTB drivers who took the 20 points: Jack Hagreaves at North Weald and Brian Jackson achieving the same great result at the first Harewood.
Keeping cool under pressure. Roger Moran, elder statesman of the hillclimbers’ Top Ten, enjoys an ice cream in the company of Caroline Cooper, RA and Pauline Goodwin at Harewood.
their freshly prepared Citroen 2CV at Mallory Park the day after the PFHC round at Shelsley. Andrew and Richard each did a ten minute race and despite their undoubted skills as Ferrari pedallers finished near the back of the field. Seems like their car is missing a donkey and really should be labelled Une Chevaux, seriously lacking in straight line speed. Now mixing with the 2CV race crowd, they are busy learning all the tweaks needed to make their example competitive. Sounds like a lot of fun, and rumour has it that it is an even cheaper form of motor racing than Pirelli Ferrari formula classic! Prior again as you can see from the accompanying picture our ace Club hillclimber and organiser has recently been flirting with the opposition, driving a Lamborghini Gallardo at an unidentified circuit in Staffordshire. Richard says he was very impressed with the V10’s massive 500bhp power and monster torque, but it was not as exciting as his F355 at the wet Bouley Bay! Turns out the Lambo jaunt was thanks to wife Ann, who treated Richard to this
experience as part of his Christmas present. 308GT4 – undervalued? It always has been as long as I can remember and it can only be down to the 2+2 seating arrangements. The “Bertie Uno”styling has stood the test of time very well and this very practical Ferrari, besides being good on the road, makes a great comp car. You only have to look at the results Sean Doyle achieved recently, and currently those of John Marshall to see what I mean. There are a bunch of these tipos tussling it out in Formula Classic too. The fastest ones, driven by Tris Simpson and Nick Whittaker, are hugely impressive and mix it with the 328GTBs regularly. Petrol Can filling can be tricky, with petrol stations having differing rules about can useage. Like me you may have experienced admonishments from forecourt staff because your can does not say “Petroleum Spirit Highly Inflammable” etc. John Marshall has looked in to the rights and wrongs on petrol cans and it seems the stations make up their own rules – typically you can only fill a couple of cans, and these should be five litre plastic
or ten litre metal. They are licensed to ensure only suitable containers are used and these can be up to 23 litres metal and 5 litre plastic. Confused? I am and always expect trouble when filling my 20 litre jerry cans for race meetings. There is, of course, a need for ensuring safety with people being known to fill their washing up liquid bottles just to excite their recalcitrant barbecues. Trailer Tyres like motorhome tyres never seem to wear out due to low mileage use. They do, though, need replacing after say eight years even when they still have masses of tread. I had tyre failures on my motorhome where the steel radial cords poked through the walls and wire brushed the wheel arches nicely. Early this year I had a trailer tyre fail a couple of miles from Snetterton, and I soon discovered the other three tyres had cracked sidewalls. It is worth keeping a close eye on sidewall deterioration. Because the trailer or motorhome is standing stationary for most of the time it is little wonder these premature failures occur. More Content please for RA Column – I know this one is on the boring side, but I have been pushed to find suitable material. My fault, sadly, as I do fewer PFHC rounds nowadays, and in consequence am not wired in like I used to be. Please be sure that if you have anything newsy even if it is only remotely connected to our series - you give me the lowdown. Contact me by e-mail allenanglia@btinternet.com or tel 01449 741399.

HE WEATHER FORCAST had been improving all week and it looked like a dry Harewood weekend ahead report ANDREW HOLMAN and RICHARD PRIOR. The programmed 20 runners was reduced by one when Richard Preece was unable to compete in his newly acquired F355, and Richard Allen in another 355 was also a potential no-show with only 4 cylinders firing. A quick visit to his trusted mechanic and some sensor swapping had Richard back on the road. Keith Anderson (360) made his first appearance and Caroline Cooper, sharing husband Jeff's 360, and James Spicer (348 ts) were at last making their Championship debuts. Another welcome sight in the paddock

was the return of Philip Whitehead in a shiny new (to him) F355. At Harewood, the BARC organisers always put us out first. The track, however, was green and generally felt slippery for first practice. Pauline Goodwin (328GTB) excelled herself with a 72.72 that was only just bettered by Andrew Holman's F355 on 71.89. Chris Hitchman showed a great turn of speed in his shared 355 to be the fastest on 71.22, narrowly ahead of Brian Jackson's 308GTB on 71.34. P2 saw times tumble for most, apart from a spin by Shaun Smith and an excursion into the infield by James Spicer. Caroline knocked an amazing 14 seconds off her first run time – if she could repeat this improvement she would win on scratch! Mike Spicer (328GTB) joined Jackson
and Chris Hitchman in the 70s; Richard Prior (355) got his act together with a 69 but Holman was a second ahead with a 68. Over lunch a few clouds gathered and the rain began. As we warmed the cars up it abated to light drops that barely wetted the track surface. Lorraine Hitchman put in a cracking 73 sec run in her 328 and James Spicer managed to stay on the black stuff this time. Phil Whitehead drove an assured 70 sec run and Jeff Cooper was determinedly showing his wife the way to do it with a high 71. The drivers in the sub-70s were now Chris Hitchman, Holman and Prior, in reverse order. What was interesting was the split times between the latter two. Holman made the fastest start, RP got ahead by first split before the Esses, Holman was faster through them and took it

back before Country. RP had Willow sorted and was ahead at the 3rd split before Orchard, and then Holman overtook again around Farmhouse to the timing beam just before the last corner at Quarry, where his Harewood caution returned and allowed RP to get over the line 0.25 sec quicker! Run 2 saw a drier track which enabled Wendy Marshall (328) to confidently drive to her fastest time of the day with a 79, but she was to be outdone at the post by the continuing improvement from Mrs Cooper. Peter Rogerson (360) clocked his fastest with a 76, James Spicer got down to 72, while Lorraine was chuffed to just squeeze ahead. Others doing their best runs on R2 were Whitehead, with a superb comeback time of 69.85, John Marshall, who wound up the GT4 and got under 72 - a time that would give him the 13 points for 4th PEP place when adjusted. PG was just behind and Brian Jackson’s time of 70.16 would surely make him a contender for maximum points unless either Chris, RP or Holman could put in personal bests. A stonking run

OULTON PARK 12th MAY 2012
A
fter the opening rounds of the 2012 series at Snetterton and Silverstone, it was Oulton Park’s beautiful wooded scenery that provided the backdrop for Round 4 of the Pirelli Ferrari formula classic programme writes JOHN SWIFT. In case anyone missed it, Oulton is one of your reporter’s all-time favourite UK tracks. It is the nearest we get to an old fashioned road circuit and is a great test of both man and machine. Unlike many English tracks, it undulates interestingly and has a good mix of fast and slow changes of direction. In addition, being a regular fixture on the Club’s track day list, many Ferrari drivers will have had the opportunity to comprehensively learn its layout. The event was a one day affair hosted by Aston Club
Racing Ltd (ACR), the new outfit sometimes creaks a little at the charged with running AMOC’s seams. competition activities. ACR has This season’s weather seems engaged Duncan Wiltshire’s to be generally sunshine and Historic Promotions Ltd to be showers, or more usually responsible for the detailed showers without the sunshine. organisation of the race meetings So, on the Friday before the race and they, in turn, depend on meeting, when a few Ferraris Jonathan Palmer’s Motor Sport were out testing, the circuit was Vision Racing (MSVR), the racing division of MSV, to provide the circuits – Snetterton Oulton and Brands Hatch – as well as the on-site personnel. It is quite a tortuous line of responsibility and, as with most new Team Winstanley had a number of problems with their ideas in their 328GTB. enveloped in rain clouds and the track was very wet. Things bucked up on the Saturday and we enjoyed sunny and dry conditions throughout the PFfc activity. For this meeting we didn’t have the company of the PFO Ferraris; when I carried out my survey before I finalised the 2012 calendar the majority of Open competitors indicated that they weren’t interested in journeying to Cheshire for a one day meeting. Since planning restrictions only permit racing at Oulton on Saturdays, this effectively rules out any 2-day events. The Classics were the first cars to qualify and set off promptly at 9.00 am for their 20 minute session. Most cars were on last year’s PZero C rubber – quite worn in some cases – although a few, those of Tris Simpson, Richard Fenny, William Moorwood and your scribe, were running the new Pirelli PZero Rosso tyres. The field numbered a reasonable 19 Ferraris including newcomer Tim Summers in his glorious Comp Daytona 365GTB/4, impeccably finished in the original Swedish livery it had worn in the eighties when raced by Ulf Boman. Steve Routledge failed to make it; the contents of his 308GT4’s unlined boot caught fire en route and caused severe damage. Moorwood’s 308GT4 sounded off colour and appeared to have a misfire, unlike the Gp4 Daytona, which made characteristically stirring V12 Ferrari music. Danny Winstanley, here at his local circuit, was in trouble with assorted problems on his normally front-running 328GTB. The car had shed its alternator drive belt and the suspension set-up was far from perfect following repairs after its Silverstone accident. All the PZero Rosso runners were seriously off the pace. In your reporter’s case the pressure gain from cold was found to be far higher than expected, leading to some skittish handling in the

corners. The timesheets revealed that Jim Cartwright had claimed pole with a time almost a full second quicker than his nearest rival, Wayne Marrs, in his similar Gp4 328GTB. Ben Cartwright (Gp3 328) was third fastest, just ahead of David Tomlin’s class leading Gp2 308GTB. The quickest Gp1 car was Nick Whittaker’s 308GT4. Following the lunch break, the Classics assembled for their 20-minute race at just after 1 o’clock. There was one absentee: Richard Squire was unable to start his 328 due to some electrical gremlin, so the field was now reduced to 18 cars.

PIRELLI FERRARI HILLCLIMB CHAMPIONSHIP: ROUND 5 PRESCOTT LA VIE EN BLEU HILLCLIMB 26th May 2012
HE PFHC’s FIRST VISIT of the year to Prescott was to the Bugatti Owners Club La Vie en Bleu meeting, with cancan girls, crêpes and accordion players reports TRACEY HAYNES. A good field of 18 Ferrari drivers took part, but noticeable omissions were Richard Prior, Tracey Haynes, Sean Doyle and Shaun Smith, all of whom had entered too close to the deadline of the already over-subscribed event.
During morning practice, Nick Taylor showed he had mastered his new 430, recording 50.06, although trailing Chris Butler (49.85) and Andrew Holman (49.94) with their F355s. The warm and dry track was at its best for the official runs after the lunch break. Mark Hargreaves set a new PB of 54.61 in the shared 308GTB but Wendy Ann Marshall was missing from the line-up due to clutch problems with her 328 during 2nd practice. Pauline Goodwin’s was the first 328 on the hill in the afternoon, recording 53.71.
Sergio Ransford and his 308 were making their 2012 debut and posted a respectable 57.46. The giallo fly 308GTB of Brian Jackson followed with 53.43. Barrie Wood had been flying in practice in his F355 and continued to improve his time to 52.48, which was a new PB in this car. The Spicers, father and son, were battling it out in the 52 -second bracket but, with a fast exit from Ettores, Mike (52.30) had the edge over James (52.89), the latter really settling into the ex-Prior 348ts. he burst into Orchard and recorded 48.96 to put him ahead of both. R2 saw 7 drivers improve on their previous times. Pauline Goodwin was now on 53.36, James Spicer clocked 52.69 but Spicer Snr finished 4th overall and took the Classic Cup points with 52.46, exactly the same as Phil

knocked nearly a second and a half off his P2 run while John Marshall set a new PB with his GT4 of 53.42. In the top three Chris Butler drove aggressively for 49.50; Andrew Holman took a tight line around Ettores and was just behind on 50.23; and Nick Taylor’s 430 sounded fantastic as
Whitehead in his new 355. Seasoned hill climber John Swift lived up to his name and started with a 0-64ft of 2.38 seconds and a run of 52.30. Jack Hargreaves couldn't quite match his dad’s performance but knocked over a second off his R1 time to finish on 54.80. The top 3 had been juggling positions all day. Butler was slower this time, crossing the line on 49.99; Holman’s well controlled run scored 49.84 but Taylor still had a record to chase and he was certainly trying. Clocking 68mph under the bridge, he finished just short of the existing target, at 48.54 which sealed 1st place on scratch. Chris Butler was 2nd and Andrew Holman 3rd. After PEPs had been applied Chris took the 20 points, Nick 17 and Andrew 15.
Nick Taylor lights up his 430’s rear tyres as he sets the fastest Ferrari time of the day.
