FERRARICOMPETITIONRESULTS FORZA FERRARI! Slightly late in the day, our scarlet cover celebrates Ferrari’s and Fernando Alonso’s famous victory in the Malaysian GP. The win brought to an end the recent drought of Ferrari successes and defied all the pundits’ pre-race predictions. The closeness in performance of all the leading contenders as well as many of the 2011 mid-field runners augers well for a season of vintage Formula One. In qualifying, the top eight cars were covered by less than half a second so the merest cough or sneeze can make the difference between a front row or 4th row grid position. These are exciting times and we wish the Ferrari team and its drivers the best fortune for the rest of the MAY season. We must also applaud our friends at Pirelli for the terrific job they are doing in continuing to brilliantly manage the tyre situation which has, as always, a major effect on race performance.
LATE DELIVERY I have to apologise for the lateness of this issue although to be fair there wasn’t a great deal of competition going on in the month of March. I promise we’ll try to get back on schedule very soon.

the current Pirelli Ferrari Hillclimb Championship records at all the hillclimb and sprint venues we have competed at, going back to the ’80s. Of the 41 listed it is interesting that no fewer than 12 are held by that master of the hills, Jon Goodwin, driving an assortment of Ferraris. Despite some other illustrious names in the roll of honour, no one else comes close to Jon’s amazing tally.
OULTON PARK TRACK DAY Our Oulton Park track day, near to Tarporley in Cheshire, is only a few weeks away, on Wednesday, May 16th. As most of you know, Oulton Park really is
a road racing gem - a sort of miniature Nürburgring but with up-to-date safety and a very decent café. Our instructor team will be there (free to use) and the numbers will be quite low, so no crowding and lots of track time. To get a taste of the day see this member’s video http:// www.youtube.com/watch? v=FjCv0fzL2UA Book now using the forms in the current edition of Ferrari News, on the Club website, or by calling the Club office.

Prior to the start of this year, UK competitors who wished to compete in overseas national events had simply to possess an MSA Competition Licence of WHAT’S ON grade National ‘A’ or above. On signing on at the overseas race meeting the only 12 Oulton Park: Pirelli Ferrari formality was to present the formula classic licence for verification. From 1st January 2012 12 Harewood Hillclimb Saturday the rules have changed. The meeting FIA have amended their definition of a National Event 13 Harewood Hillclimb Sunday which impacts on UK meeting competitors visiting overseas national events as well as 16 FOC: Oulton Park Track Day those competitors visiting UK shores. This change only 26 Prescott Hillclimb applies to National events; International events are 2/3 Shelsley Walsh Hillclimb covered by Article 70 and our MSA automatically provides 4/5 Brands Hatch: Pirelli Ferrari authorisation when issuing an formula classic; Pirelli Ferrari Open [double headers] International Competition Licence by endorsing the 14 FOC: Snetterton Track Day reverse of the licence ‘Valid as a visa, Article 70 ISC’. 16/17 Doune Hillclimb From the start of the year it is necessary for (a) 24 Gurston Down Hillclimb the overseas event to be inscribed on the country’s 30/01 Goodwood Festival of Speed ASN’s National calendar and

deemed valid for authorised foreign participation and (b) the licence holder to be in possession of specific authorisation from the licensing authority – in our case the MSA – to participate. If we cut through all the above bureaucracy devised by the blazers in Paris for no apparent reason, how does this affect our 2012 trips to Spa and Nürburgring? Well, after a good deal of phone calls and email correspondence I have now received the necessary confirmation of authority from the race organisers. I have also agreed a practical procedure with the MSA. This is as follows. Several weeks prior to the overseas races I will submit to the MSA a list of our Ferrari drivers who are intending to compete, together with their UK licence number (National ‘A’ and above, remember). The MSA will then give me blanket approval to all those drivers on the list. The only thing I need drivers to do when the time comes is to return their entry forms quickly to Anne for the Spa and Nürburgring race meetings.

TOUR OF THE PASSES We have had a note from DAVID HATHAWAY to tell us he is devising a trip to a number of famous European passes at a date to be decided in early July.
The plot is to take in the San Bernard Pass in Switzerland, the Stelvio in Italy, the Col de Turini in France and back via the Millau Bridge. The route is about 2,500 miles in all and David expects to drive up and down each pass a few times. He reckons the duration of the trip will be around 7/8 days. To save on costs he envisages

SARDINIA One of several reasons that this issue of CompRes is late in reaching your letter box is that just before the beginning of April Anne and I took off for Sardinia for a week’s holiday. This wonderful sojourn was courtesy of all those competitors who so generously contributed to our present at the end of last season. The prize funded the lion’s share of the travel and hotel costs at the resort of Alghero. Thanks to the invaluable assistance of both Christian and Liz Mineeff, together with Angela and Richard Preece – all of whom have firsthand experience of the island – we stayed at one of the finest hotels we have ever enjoyed, the 5-star Villa Las Tronas. With all the specialist advice we dined like the judges in Great British Menu. We had a super
time and I have included a small pic from our holiday snaps. If you are contemplating a holiday in the near future (but don’t let it interfere with your competition programme!) I can’t recommend too highly Alghero and the Villa Las Tronas in Sardinia.
PARKING IN LEEDS A Leeds man walks into a High Street bank and asks for a loan. He tells the bank officer he is going to Australia on business for two weeks and needs to borrow £5,000. The bank officer tells him that the bank will need some form of security for the loan, so the man hands over the keys and documents of a new Ferrari parked on the street outside. He produces the log book and everything checks out. The officer agrees to accept the car as collateral for the loan. The bank manager and his staff all enjoy a good laugh at the rough-looking Yorkshireman for

5 using a £150,000 Ferrari as collateral against a £5,000 loan. The bank manager then instructs one of his staff to drive the Ferrari into the bank's underground garage, where he parks it. Two weeks later, the man returns, repays the £5,000 and the interest of £15.41. The bank officer says to the Yorkshireman, "Sir, we are very happy to have had your business, and this transaction has worked out very nicely, but we are a little puzzled. While you were away, we checked you out further and found that you are a multimillionaire. What puzzles us is, why would you bother to borrow £5,000"? The Yorkshireman replies: "Where else in Leeds can I park my Ferrari for two weeks for only £15.41 and expect it to be there when I return.”

RA’s HILLCOMMENT Here we go again though sadly I missed the season’s opener at North Weald (reported in this issue). As you can see from the results it turned out to be a most intriguing start to the 2012 PFHC series. Sprintmeister Andrew Holman blitzed the opposition with his well sorted F355, but still missed out on the 20 point max score. The big surprise was the speed of young Jack Hargreaves armed with the family 308GTB – he finished third overall and was close enough to the leading F335s to take the prized points. Bouley Bay is just a week away as I write these notes and we are all looking forward to the Jersey mini holiday. Sadly the brilliant weather of late looks set to disappear – the forecasters have just predicted snow later this week. A good crowd of Club members, not just competitors, are going over from Poole on Good Friday and will be out in strength on the picturesque Bouley Bay hill for Easter Monday. Favourite, Richard Prior, will face strong opposition from Andrew Holman, and it will be interesting to see if Nick Taylor, on his first event with his recently acquired stick shift F430, can get amongst these two. Caroline Cooper many of you will know as Mrs Jeff Cooper. A new registration for the series in 2012, she has now joined forces with Jeff to share their 360 Modena for PFHC events. They were expected out at North Weald but a gearbox malfunction with the car regrettably meant a non-start. Next up for the Cooper family is Harewood in May and Caroline plans to do the Harewood school before then. I have remarked before on the
CompRes 4
popularity of husband and wife teams and if we have not lost anyone this season that makes no less than five of them. Keith Anderson another new registration for 2012 comes from Howe Green near Chelmsford in Essex. Keith, just 35 years of age, is on his first Ferrari, a 360 Modena, inevitably red with floor shift, and as you can see from this issue he has already made his debut at North Weald. New to Ferrari, he is not new to competition and already knows his way around some of the hills and sprint courses we use, having taken part in the Westfield Sports Car Club’s series – he won the novice class in his first year! David Hathaway newly PFHC registered is not really new at all as some of you will recall. He took part in the hillclimb series some years back and then
moved on to compete in both Pirelli Ferrari Formula Classic and the Pirelli Ferrari Open, using a variety of different tipos that I have lost track of, though I do know he has the biggest truck I have seen in our paddock. Welcome back then to David who has chosen a F430 for PFHC and will debut at Bouley Bay - he has been there before so will know what to do. Jon Goodwin, number one PFHC stalwart over so very many years with countless class wins in all sorts of tipos, and some Championship wins along the way, has sadly decided to take a sabbatical from motorsport for 2012. You probably know that quite apart from what he gets up to with his Ferraris, he is hugely active in other spheres. This May he was entered with Martin McGlone co-driving his V8 MGB in the Trans America Challenge,
We look forward to seeing Caroline Cooper on the hills this season.
starting in New York going across America, through Canada and then Alaska – a five week marathon event. He and Pauline took part in the 1972 Olympics and he has recently been busy organising his fellow Olympians from that event for a reunion to coincide with the same canoe slalom Olympic event coming up very soon. All this and managing his considerable car collection besides has proved to be a grind that made him decide to take some breaks where he could. He has withdrawn from the Trans America Challenge and aforementioned motorsport, but we shall still be seeing him. Jon is accompanying Pauline where possible, and I am very pleased to say he will join us over in Jersey. Upcoming events are many and arrive thick and fast as we get in to the season. The Harewood double header on May 12/13 attracts big Ferrari entries and arrangements are in place for a special Dinner at the nearby Harewood Arms on the Saturday night, plus there is favourably priced accommodation reserved for us. The booking form was sent out early March and you should get on to this if not already effected. Others with special overnight accommodation and dinners planned are Doune on June 16/17 and the Loton Park double header on July 14/15. Booking forms for both these will be mailed out during April. Millbrook is a popular place for manufacturers to evaluate new machinery and it seems for some journalists too. About fifteen to twenty years ago the PFHC called the Castrol Ferrari Challenge at the time - included a sprint at Millbrook. We did this for two or three years before they stopped activity of this sort there.
Those of us who can remember still think it one of the best sprint courses we have been on. I have not been back since, so when Harry Metcalfe, owner of Evo and Octane magazine asked me over with my 575, I thought why not. They were preparing a feature about the new F12 berlinetta and gathered together some of the earlier V12s leading up to the new Ferrari, from 275GTB to 599GTB. Primarily a photoshoot we did get to do plenty of driving too. I had no idea what a vast place Millbrook is and never saw the inner and outer handling track we used all those years ago. We were on the Hill course, or Mountain course as it is sometimes referred to, and it is amazingly hilly for just a few miles away from Bedford. The track is narrow, very tricky with blind crests and camber changes, all surrounded by Armco – initially I thought what a great place for a PFHC event, but then decided maybe not - you could do a lot of damage! New Car Technology that I am prone to whingeing about has recently brought along some fresh jargon such as torque vectoring and haptic vibration. We have been quite happy with good old mechanical limited slip differentials, but now thanks to the wheel rotation monitoring that came in with anti lock brakes, the onboard computer can watch out for both wheel
slippage or signs of control loss to apportion engine torque to the appropriate wheel. Ferrari have their E-Diff on their latest models and the volume manufacturers have various forms of torque vectoring to ensure the fun is taken out of modern motoring. As for haptic vibration, early unintentional examples of this were steering wheel shimmy or overall car vibration through outof-balance front or rear wheels. Now, haptic vibration use is typified by mobile phones set to vibrate, and upcoming uses will be hand tools such as torque wrenches set to vibrate when the desired torque is achieved. The other recent jargon, one that is not at all technical, is mojo – they reckon Felipe Massa has lost his and I am sure mine went some years back, even though I have no idea what a mojo is! Ferrari Road Cars have nearly always been great, but recently they have excelled themselves, introducing new tipos that are truly brilliant as exemplified by the California, 458 Italia, FF and the astonishing new F12 berlinetta. McLaren meanwhile are struggling with their MP4-12C, having both production difficulties and quality issues with customer cars. Looking at current F1 form there appears to be some role reversal potential here, and it occurred to me that if I was Luca di Montezemelo I would put the Ferrari road car design team in charge of the F1 car division – maybe that is why I have not got his job! PFHC Prizegiving Dinner maybe should go in your diary even though it seems like only yesterday we had the last one – the date is Saturday, 27 October 2012.

ET ANOTHER NEW track layout for the Sprint at this Essex airfield saw the Ferrari entry of 15 drop to 12 when we lost Jeff Cooper together with two newcomers to the PFHC: James Spicer and Caroline Cooper, due to mechanical problems reports RICHARD PRIOR. However a third new competitor did make it to the start line: Keith Anderson in his red 360 Modena. Morning practice was led by Andrew Holman in the F355 on 82.86, with similarly mounted Richard Prior on 84.11 and Mike Spicer (328 GTB) 85.31 seconds. In the afternoon timed session Mark Hargreaves (308 GTB) had his best result on his second run with

ITH 14 TEAMS engaged for our annual PreSeason enduro karting race at Thruxton this year writes JOHN SWIFT, the volume of traffic on the track was rather more manageable than in recent times when we have consistently broken the circuit’s attendance record. A word about the teams. RnR Performance Cars looked pretty frisky under the guidance of chief honcho Richard Dougal. Richard looks as though he will be busier than ever this season looking after even more customer Ferraris. The Orza team – previously known as Meals on Wheels – seems to be on a diet, becoming a slim-line Meal on Wheels this time. Team principal Ben Orza was holed up in the Czech Republic so left his rapid drivers – including two of his sons – to their own devices. With a team called Simon Pics you would expect a whole album.
