These should provide useful information on targets for most of the circuits we use although it should be borne in mind that certain tracks may now have changed in layout, particularly Snetterton, since we were last there. Also, remember that the class structure in PFO has been revised for 2011.

If you need to replace your 360 Modena windscreen, help is at hand. DAMAX hold a small batch of original tinted glass screens, complete with built-in radio aerial, which they can supply to CompRes subscribers at a massive discount. Full details from Robin Ward on 01869-277942.

458 ITALIA NOISE TESTS Some concern has been expressed about the noise levels produced by the new 458 Italia in view of the increasingly harsh attitude of some circuits holding track days. Ferrari North Europe recently commissioned MIRA to conduct simulated noise tests taking into account the noise limits at the majority of UK circuits, using a standard 458 Italia fitted with the new Ferrari Genuine aftermarket exhaust system which has been specifically designed to lower noise levels for track use. The Ferrari part number of this silencer kit is 70001965. The tests were performed as per MSA rules, on an ISO noise surface with engine revs at 6,750rpm (75% max revs).

Using the kit, the static test produced a reading of 105dB(A). For the drive-by test the car was driven in Sport mode and subjected to both the standard drive-by conditions and various driving situations to simulate a number of different scenarios. The following two tables, below and overleaf, show the results of the tests:

In conclusion, all circuits commented that they strongly recommend that potential customers contact them directly prior to any track day to check which vehicle will be taking part, and the noise levels of the car. They would normally seek ways to resolve any foreseeable difficulties but also advise on any changes in the rules or requirements. Each local authority reserves the right to change the noise limits or deny access to the track at any time.

A 458 fitted with the standard road-going exhaust would not pass the static noise limits. However, 458 fitted with the new Ferrari Genuine Aftermarket exhaust system should pass all the drive-by tests with the exception of Croft, and be close to or just below all the other circuits listed except Castle Combe and Croft. The Mallory Park requirements were unknown at the time of testing. Variations in weather conditions, proximity to other pulling away during the measurement or the positioning of the measurement equipment relative to objects likely to reflect sound are all factors that may affect individual noise readings. It should be noted that tests should NOT be conducted in ‘race’ mode as this will significantly increase noise levels. In addition to the quieter silencers for the road cars, Ferrari has also introduced a quieter exhaust system for the 458 Challenge cars which reduces the noise level significantly but as we went to press Ferrari North Europe don’t have the same level of data for that version. However it is believed it reduces the drive-by to around 98 dB (A).

RA’s HILLCOMMENT Away we go in the 2011 PFHC with the opening round at North Weald reported in this issue. An encouragingly sizeable Ferrari entry turned up at North Weald and they were not there for the scenery so the signs are good. Bookings reported with Condor Ferries indicate that the entry for Bouley Bay will be strong too. This is all the more surprising when you consider the depressing world news recently and economic uncertainties. Best Supporting Club Award (see pic) for the Ferrari Owners’ Club received by Richard Prior from Borough 19 Motor Club as a result of our showing at North Weald. Over the years we have often been told by event organisers they like us, because we get the entries in and usually all turn out on the day, even though we have sometimes knocked their furniture around.

You can reckon it will be a close run thing – McLaren proved with the F1 many years ago they knew what they were doing. The 458 Italia certainly is a better looking car, has a much nicer cabin and being normally aspirated will sound better. McLaren, though, have a couple of handy tricks up their sleeve when it comes to those crucial 0100mph figures and lap times. They have a List 1B tyre as an option and their press cars are so fitted; and crucially the MP4-12C is turbocharged – how much power would you like today sir?!! 25th Anniversary in 2011 for the Ferrari Owners’ Club Hillclimb Championship in case you have forgotten, and we are still at work behind the scenes coming up with one or two things to mark the occasion that will be received by this year’s lucky competitors. Tracey Haynes will be late turning out this year, with Prescott her first meeting. Not from choice, I might add, but because of a recent fall at work resulting in several broken bones. Driving, for now, is off the agenda for at least a month. The 2011 Prizegiving Dinner will also be extra special to mark this occasion. The date is Saturday, October 29th and the venue Moore Place Hotel in Aspley Guise. We have considered other venues, but on balance still believe Moore Place is very well suited. Please ensure you have this in your diary as it is not to be missed!

he start of the 2011 season was here at last. For most competitors, it seems a long break from last October until the earliest round possible on the calendar at North Weald in March reports RICHARD PRIOR. Despite this a few members are still caught out and always rush to ready their cars every year (myself included!) Two newcomers were present at this first sprint of the year. Tony Attwood was here in a lovely 246 Dino which was seen last year at the Curborough sprint tuition day, and Steve Routledge was jumping in at the deep end in his pristine 360 Modena, having acquired a taste for competition (he is also thinking about Ferrari Classic circuit racing!) As usual the weather was typical North Weald, not knowing if it should rain, stay dry or just drizzle. So to make sure it did a combination of all three, and even the sun made an appearance near the end of the day. Despite the March gloom,

order. As is tradition, the newcomers are put at the head of the class with the potentially faster runners at the tail end. So it was Tony Attwood who took the 246GT to the start line first and negotiated his way round the coned track in 96.29, while Steve Routledge followed in his 360 Modena with a time of 108.88. A very competent first drive from both of them without any wrong routes or damaged cones, so a promising start to their hillclimb and sprint careers. This initial run was to be the driest of the day and resulted in most drivers’ time best of the meeting, including Barrie Wood on 88.27 (who had been tinkering with the 308’s valve timing over the winter, with the car now running as it had when it left the factory). “Lots of power restored which had been missing in previous years” reported Barrie. Richard Allen (F355), Mark Hargreaves (308 GTB) and Sean Doyle (308 GT4) were all credited with ‘Wrong Route’ which usually means going to the wrong side of a marker cone or completely

Holman predictably pushed the target further to finish on 84.81 despite some wide understeer moments. So it was all down to Mike Spicer. Another smooth drive put Mike in contention until a fluffed gear change robbed him of the win. However his 86.23 was enough to steal 2nd place from Prior by 0.18 seconds. So Andrew Holman took the scratch win and is now leading the Championship after bagging

Not only were there trophies for the top four in our class but our impressive turnout of 15 competitors earned a surprise award from the organisers, Borough 19. We were adjudged the Best Supporting Club at the event. Thanks go to every one of our committed drivers who braved the weather and economic gloom to turn out in force this early in the new season.

PIRELLI KARTING ENDURANCE RACE THRUXTON Saturday, 26th March 2011

PRE-SEASON KARTING

T

HE POPULARITY of the Pre-Season Karting Enduro, so generously organised by our good friends at Pirelli, continues at an all time high reports JOHN SWIFT. Twenty teams of drivers descended on Thruxton’s Karting Centre on Saturday, 26 March, to do battle in the annual precursor to Ferrari action on the circuits. Sunshine and a dry track made for perfect conditions and the race proved to be a cracker, with close dicing all the way down the order. Following a televised briefing by Tiff Needell, the teams went out for a 30minute familiarisation and qualifying session. Each driver needed to complete at least three laps to qualify and there was

hectic activity in the pits to accommodate all ninety or so driver changes. The lead in the two hour race changed continually but the monitor in the clubhouse kept accurate track of the situation. At the end, less than 4 seconds separated the leading pair of karts, with the QV team taking the chequered flag just ahead of Scuderia Cartwright. In third came the fancied Meals on Wheels team who just shaded Five Alive, managed by Derek Seymour. The fastest lap of the race was set by Scuderia Rosso Corsa driver and ex-PFHC hillclimb champion, Richard Prior. There was one unfortunate accident during the afternoon. John Watts had an off which put him into the Armco, resulting in two cracked ribs and some cartilage damage. His lady,

Amanda, transported him rapidly to Tunbridge Wells hospital in his Testarossa (an unlikely but effective ambulance) where he was discharged after treatment. We send our best wishes for a speedy recovery and hope he is fully fit for the first race of the season. During the racing we enjoyed an excellent buffet lunch organised by our hosts, Pirelli. The results are tabulated and we have included a gallery of action photographs to illustrate some of the day’s excitement. The thanks of all those who enjoyed this great afternoon of serious karting go to Pirelli and in particular their head honcho on the day, Tom Murphy. In the evening a number of us gathered at the Valle D’Oro Italian restaurant restaurant in Newbury for a celebratory dinner.
