FERRARICOMPETITIONRESULTS SEEING RED In celebration of Ferrari’s one-two win at the second Grand Prix of 2010, at Bahrain in the middle of March, CompRes is wearing its suit of red clothes on the cover. It was a tremendous achievement on the part of the Scuderia’s team drivers, Fernando Alonso and Felipe Massa, and marked a very welcome change of fortune for Ferrari. The jury is still out on how the 2010 F1 season will work out as a spectacle but for our money there doesn’t seem to be much wrong with it so far. It is always going to be difficult for racing cars with similar performance to pass each other – it’s quite tricky even with our Formula Classic cars! – and we shall continue to be glued to the TV screen to watch the races. Fortunately there are quite a number of potential winners out there to make the racing tremendously exciting, to make up for the comparatively dire APRIL performances of some of the also-rans. The fact that MAY the Virgin-Cosworth VR-01 doesn’t have sufficient fuel tank capacity to complete a Grand Prix makes you want to weep . . .
CIRCUIT and HILL RECORDS In this issue you will JUNE find tabulated lists of the current lap records and hillclimb fastest times at all the venues at which we compete. In the case of the Pirelli Ferrari formula classic series, because of last years
reclassification of the various competition groups, we have only included 2009’s lap records. If you wish to compare these with what has gone before you will need to refer to the March 2009 (042) issue of CompRes.
DAMAX We are delighted to welcome Damax as a sponsor of our Pirelli Ferrari Open series this year. All cars competing in the series will display their distinctive logo on the windscreen sunstrips. Robin and Sharon Ward are the moving forces behind Damax and need no introduction from us. Damax has been involved with Ferrari for many years now and have gained an enviable reputation, particularly in race preparation. It takes a special talent to be able to carry out this sort of work under the extreme pressure that usually applies to race cars, when time is so critical.
Damax have amply demonstrated their skills and considerable experience of dealing with the complexities of the latest machinery to emerge from Maranello. Their customers have an additional advantage in knowing that Robin has the ability to drive their Ferraris just as fast as they can!
SPA-FRANCORCHAMPS
The entry packs, containing full details of the weekend, regulations, a booking form for the Friday evening special Ferrari Dinner, and an entry form, have already been despatched to all registered competitors for both our race series, the PFfc and PFO. We published the timetable for the event in the last issue of CompRes together with other essential information. I have endeavoured to discover if any track day organisation has arranged a test day immediately prior to this race meeting but unfortunately there doesn’t appear to be one. However, WHAT’S ON all Ferrari drivers will have the opportunity of taking 24 Goodwood Sprint part in the test session at 9.00 o’clock on the Friday 8/9 Harewood Hillclimb morning. OUT-OF-DATE KIT Competitors need to be vigilant about the dating and labelling of various items of their racewear. Most items have a specified maximum ‘life’ and are unacceptable to the MSA after this is over. Safety scrutineers have directives from the governing body regarding the validity of these items and more and more, in these safety conscious days, they will refuse to issue the vital ‘pass’ sticker to enable drivers to race if anything is beyond its sell-by date. Helmets are perhaps the most important item of equipment for the driver and there are a number of different standards that apply. The subject is covered in the 2010 MSA Blue Book on pp173/174. With regard to helmets conforming to Snell 2000, you will see that these “may be withdrawn with effect from 01/01/11”. However, a few weeks ago the MSA issued a directive which extended the validity of these helmets to 31st December 2014. The BS6658 type A/FR standard was originally due to become invalid after 2013 but has now been given an extension to at least 2015. All this means that drivers who need to replace their helmet this season may find it cost effective to buy one of these extended life helmets at a bargain price, knowing that there is a significant ‘life’ remaining in them. Overalls must be clean and manufactured from Nomex III. Proban or similar materials, and the standard label must be stitched into the fabric as
2 CompRes
described in the 2010 MSA Blue Book on p172. The standard varies according to whether the race suit is used in circuit racing or for speed events. However, it is essential that the suit conforms to the written word if it is to pass scrutineering. Seats as with other items, have a specific validity period and normally bear a label stating ‘Not to be used after XXXX’. Scrutineers routinely check these labels and so it is essential to make sure that yours is still within its specified age limit. Finally, make sure that your seat belts are within their validity period – usually 10 years from manufacture. The ‘out-ofdate’ label should be affixed to the harness and, again, scrutineers will fail the car if the belts are invalid by even a few months. You can read all the relevant regulations on safety harnesses on p166 of the Blue Book.
DOUNE HILLCLIMB In the last week or so, Anne has sent out an email flyer to all registered PFHC competitors giving full details of the Doune weekend on 19th/20th June. This is one of those events which, if you haven’t experienced it before, you should really try to get to. Competitors will be based at the Dunblane Hydro hotel where, on the Saturday evening, they will enjoy a special Dinner in the company of members from the four Scottish Area Groups. If, for some reason, you have been omitted from Anne’s group email but would like to attend this wonderful event, whether as a competitor or simply as a spectator, you need to request details from her as soon as possible – the contact addresses are on page 1 of this issue.
BEN CARTWRIGHT On 1st May, Ben Cartwright will be embarking on a challenge
to cycle from Lands End to John o’ Groats in 8 days along with four other cyclists, all in aid of Matlock Mencap where Ben has been a volunteer for the last 7 years. A fellow volunteer has kindly offered his valued support by driving alongside the cyclists with a variety of spares and supplies onboard. This gruelling adventure will require a high level of physical and mental stamina along with self determination, covering over 900 miles and up to 140 miles a day. The challenge will be fuelled by the great support of fellow volunteers, family and friends and any kind donations will be greatly appreciated, to support a local charity. Please contact Ben at ben@ncsc.fsbusiness.co.uk if you would like to make a donation.

car has needed some work after blown head gaskets were diagnosed. This meant engine out and apparently there were other things that needed attention. The engine is now much better and I can only think this deterioration must have been as a result of John’s driving the car in Formula Classic a few years ago!
Noise Testing at meetings can often be an embarrassment when they ask for 5000rpm and your engine is nothing like normal operating temperature. At North Weald the test was conducted as cars came in from first practice, which seemed a good idea. My 328 was 99dB(A) and interestingly Sean Doyle’s GT4 was 103 – he is little concerned by this not being a Track Day participant. If you are buying a new system and are going to turn out for any of these, be sure to purchase a unit that easily meets current requirements. There is little doubt that noise level limitations are becoming more rigorous all the time. The Social Scene during this season looks promising, starting with the Harewood double header weekend. John and Anne Swift have arranged a Spring Hillclimbers Dinner for Saturday 8th May at The Bridge Hotel near Wetherby, about ten minutes from the hill, and secured very attractive accommodation rates - a booking form has already been circulated.
On June 19th we are at Doune, and once again Chris Butler has arranged a splendid dinner and reserved accommodation at the Dunblane Hydro for the Ferrari entourage. In July is the double header Loton Park and for this Jon Goodwin has booked the Old Hand & Diamond just down the road from the hill for our dinner on Saturday, July 10th and secured the accommodation we need. Finally, over August 14/15, we have the MIRA/ Curborough weekend, and here Jon has booked Colton House at Rugely, near to Curborough, for our dinner and accommodation. Naturally we hope you will take advantage of these arrangements at these events to make the weekends extra special. The booking forms for these will be circulated soon. The AGM Weekend and Prizegiving Lunch is very soon now, on Sunday April 18th. I look forward to seeing many of you there so we can applaud our winners besides having a good time.
PRIORITIES Curborough ITSE School: Wednesday 19th May is a date for your diary, when we are running our annual ‘Introduction to Speed Events’ seminar. We are hoping to attract some new competitors into the Pirelli Ferrari Hillclimb Championship (PFHC), which of course also embraces some sprint events. We have four instructors lined up to help out and pass on their knowledge to any newcomers who may be understandably nervous and wary. We can always use another couple of volunteer instructors with their cars to assist. You will get lots of time on track as extra practice and of

Plan of attack at picturesque Loton Park.
Loton - Party in the Park: Sunday 23rd May most hillclimbers will remember a few years ago we helped the Hagley & District Light Car Club (H&DLCC) by turning out for a charity day at Loton Park and giving rides to paying customers. Proceeds go to the very worthy cause of the Air Ambulance service. The idea has been resurrected in celebration of the 50th anniversary of Loton Park and we’ve been invited by their Chairman, Dave Parr, to take part once again. The format will be at lower than competition speed these days and will run in a convoy (albeit at a ‘brisk’ pace, says Dave, as the pace car will be a Sierra Cosworth or 350bhp Evo). If you like the idea of some additional track practice time, please email me and I’ll add you to the list. The only possible downside is that you will have to become a member of the H&DLCC to be able to take part, but as this is only £35 for the year and entitles you to a discount when entering the Loton Park rounds of the PFHC in July, this isn’t too much of a burden. I have the H&DLCC membership application forms which I will send on receipt of your email. entered by now. If you haven’t yet submitted your paperwork, do so without delay if you want to be assured of an entry. Last year’s event was quite spectacular and this year even more of the same is promised. The F430 on loan to Autocar magazine will be taking part in our class and alongside the usual cancan dancers and strolling accordion players there will be more French club stands, the Breitling Wingwalkers and even the Daleks taking to the track, although we’re not sure how they’ll handle the hairpin at Pardon!
a variety of different tipos and competitors will have now submitted their application forms. We shall post a list of successful drivers and cars who will be appearing as soon as we are notified. There will be an open paddock for spectators, who will be able to get close to the competing cars and static displays from various owners’ clubs and the AA Heritage Collection. Other classes featured on the Sunday and Monday will be GT cars, singleseaters and classic racing machines that would have raced at the track in its heyday. You can find more details at www.motorsportatthepalace. co.uk So, it’s going to be a very busy Bank Holiday weekend! As British Summer Time has now started, let’s hope for the start of the summer weather too!
Crystal Palace Motorsport at the Palace Meeting: Sunday 30th May The very next day after the Prescott meeting we shall be representing the Ferrari Owners’ Club in a non-Championship round at the revival of motorsport at Crystal Palace. The format will comprise two practice runs , starting at 9.00am, followed by two official timed sprint runs in the afternoon. We have applied for 10 entries for Ferrari drivers The course at Crystal Palace. on the Sunday in

class, and then there was Andrew Holman, always very fast here, who was rumoured to have been at North Weald the weekend before for practice. Those without the prospect of the class win would all be having close competition so some fun was in store. It was great to see the return to PFHC action of Barrie Wood with his F355, and Adrian Wilson with what looked like an original red F355 – it has the dark silver wheels, but RHD. I thought he had the steering wheel moved across, but it is a different car. Also back on the scene was Mark Hargreaves – our newer people thought he was a fresh player but of course he has been around in years gone by competing with both a 308GT4 and 365BB. Mark is now running a red 308GTB and competed in 2009 in Formula Classic. At North Weald he was sharing the 308 with son, Jack. The weather was surprisingly clement as the practice sessions got under way, and on the first only four of the Ferraris were credited with a time. It seems our drivers were mostly navigationally bereft – the time sheet saying “wrong way” for most of them. The exuberant

Top Men. Andrew Holman, Chris Butler and David Tomlin all excelled at North Weald.
Sean Doyle was another no timer and he was marked “4 wheels off” even though they were still affixed to his 308GT4 as he bashfully returned to the paddock. Of the four clever people left, David Tomlin (F355) was fastest with an eleven second lead over Julian Playford’s handsome grigio F355. On P2, only Peter Wilson (348ts) and Wendy Marshall (328GTB) took the wrong route, whilst Chris Butler moved to the top of the chart at 78.12, just ahead of Tomlin’s 78.47 and Holman with 79.25. Meanwhile Sean Doyle had put in a storming 83.47 with his 308GT4, moving in to fourth overall and ahead of all those vastly more powerful tipos. He appeared to be quite pleased with all this, unlike your reporter who had disgracefully spun his 328GTB around one of the slow pins! There were three official runs over the rest of the day and a short break for lunch to enable the usual fat chewing both literal and figuratively. After that we were kept busy, the weather remaining dry although rain was known to be on the way. On the
first run, John Marshall took his 430 Scud into the lead with an excellent 77.75, and Andrew Holman moved up to second with 78.01, just one hundredth ahead of Tomlin – this all looking be very close. Chris Butler was a little out of touch and had lost his timing strut out on the course, as Allen moved up to fifth with Adrian Wilson now ahead of the rest including Sean Doyle, now well off his practice time. Julian Playford meanwhile had provided some excitement by spinning his 355 comprehensively in a great cloud of smoke. On the second official Andrew Holman really got in to his stride – his remarkable time of 77.14 giving him a convincing class lead. Marshall had dropped to 79. 32 and Tomlin was now second, at 77.73. Chris Butler went slower and it was Barrie Wood who shone - with a nice tidy run of 82.60 he moved his F355 ahead of main rival Adrian Wilson. Amongst the 308 fraternity, Mark Hargreaves improved considerably with 83.92 to head off Sean Doyle. The third and final run was expected to produce some
excitement. Andrew Holman looking at the class win and 20 points asked me what I thought he need do for this last run. I remarked that with Butler stuck in the 78’s he should worry about Tomlin. A three quarter second lead is comfortable on the hills, but not a lot at North Weald. Seems I got it all wrong with Andrew making a hash of his run, David tearing the centre out of his clutch half way around, and John Marshall again in the 79’s. The big surprise came from Chris Butler, who finally got it together with a very fast smooth run on 77.04, shaving a tenth off Holman – he looked rather chuffed and Andrew looked amazed! Elsewhere, my 328 dropped into the high 79’s despite my hamfistedness leaving the gear blocker in going down to the bottom hairpin. Barrie Wood improved some more to head up the second division F355s, hotly pursued by Adrian Wilson. Sean Doyle was relieved to be back ahead of Mark Hargreaves and leading some 355s and Jeff Cooper’s 360 Modena – Jeff’s fastest first run had put him behind Adrian and ahead of Julian. Jack Hargreaves, on his first event with the 308GTB, got down to a very creditable 85.90 heading Julian Playford’s F355, Peter Wilson’s 348ts and Wendy Marshall’s 328. Wendy, on her first North Weald outing, told me after she had found it very difficult – understandable really as it seemed so to me too! Our congratulations then to Chris Butler for taking the maximum points and the class at the last moment, and of course Andrew Holman and David Tomlin in second and third respectively. An exciting contest and a foretaste of good things to come.

INTERMARQUE CHAMPIONSHIP: ROUND 1 ROUND 1: SNETTERTON 5th APRIL 2010
Ferrari Team scores at Snetterton HE FERRARI TEAM had a good start to the season on Bank Holiday Monday at Snetterton reports TIM MOGRIDGE. The rain held off although qualifying in the morning was a little damp but no need for those wet tyres. Our team comprised myself, David Hathaway and Wayne Marrs, all in our F355 Challenge cars and running on the obligatory road tyres. It was a smaller than usual grid of 18 cars that reduced further after some attrition in qualifying but not in the Ferrari camp - although it was a close call. On my first flying lap I braked hard at the end of the back straight, locked all wheels and spun several times. It turned out that the ABS had failed and I had not realised. We are used to absolutely standing on the brakes in these cars so it was a bit of a surprise. Time to learn how to drive without these modern aids! In the end we qualified 4th , 8th and 9th, with me at the back. The race went much better and after a good start we had 4th, 5th and 6th places after lap 1, and Wayne and I were nose to tail for much of the race. We
were never going to catch the monster horse power Scragg Aston V8, and some of the Aston GT4 cars are becoming difficult to live with. That said we all managed a 1’:21” time and the FTD was 1’:20.40” so we were not too bad. After 40 minutes we had a team finish of 4th, 5th and 7th. This, I think, puts us in the overall lead after race one of the season, so a jolly good start. The rules allow points scoring from the first four cars in each team so if we can get another Ferrari out on track we stand a chance of winning the Intermarque championship on
2010. As there are multipliers for different classes this means we are particularly looking for some Ferraris from our Classic series as they are already on the correct tyres and could bag extra points. Any Classic competitors please apply! The next race is at Mallory Park on 9th May. As a postscript, Wayne and I both did the GT One-Hour endurance race at the end of the day, with Wayne using his 360 GT2 car. I am happy to report that this ended with a Ferrari one -two, with the nearest Aston GT4 a lap down. No prizes as to which Ferrari was the winner . . . Photo: Linzi Smart

talking, and when your backside is only an inch or two off the track, the sensation of speed is tremendous. This year’s event was more popular than ever. A record number of twenty teams had signed up to take part – that’s something like 80 or so drivers, an impressive number by any standard. By 11am the Thruxton
motorsport centre was groaning at the seams with our Ferrari contingent of drivers, many of them very experienced but a few having their first taste of the Honda-engined Biz Thunderkarts they were to drive. At 11.30, a briefing given remotely by Tiff Needell via a TV monitor helped answer many of the queries by the newcomers. The format of the race was as in previous Photo: SwiftyPix

s a prelude to the season’s Ferrari racing, the traditional Pirelli team karting race has much to commend it writes JOHN SWIFT. At the end of March the first signs of spring are beginning to show – daffodils, crocus, newborn lambs, emerging leaves on the trees. It is the shaking off of the winter inactivity, the reawakening of the urge to blast off into the countryside to blow all the cobwebs away. With the never ending increase in restrictions on our public roads, with cameras at every turn, it is almost impossible to drive with anything amounting to exuberance and retain your licence. But on a kart circuit it’s different – you can blast around as quickly as your skill allows without a care in the world. Thruxton is our kart circuit of choice. It’s in the open air (and therefore subject to the vagaries of the weather) and shouldn’t be confused with the majority of indoor arenas. Here, the karts are going twice as fast and the thrill is arguably at least twice as great. 65mph is what we are
Pole position went to Pirelli’s Quicker Than Rosso team. It was only coincidence that their fastest kart was driven by a certain Phil Lowe, who just happens to build all the karts at Thruxton circuit.

years: a 2-hour enduro with each team of four or five drivers having to stop a minimum number of times, including one for refuelling. Some notes about the teams this year might be of interest. DK ENGINEERING was lacking both its manager, David Cottingham and its lead driver, the ebullient Jeremy C, but younger son James had recruited some experienced replacements. SKID MARKS seemed to consist of Nick Cartwright’s ‘B’ team. Under the guidance of Nick himself, Jack Dwane (Mick’s enthusiastic son) and ‘Jack’s friend’ were the mainstays of the side. CAPETOWN CLASSIC RACERS was the title of Vance Kearney’s team of tough looking drivers, which included Lee Moulden, his 2010 team mate, Pat Gormley, and Henry Fletcher (British GT driver who has just purchased Barry Carpenter’s F355 Challenge Ferrari). SCUDERIA CARTWRIGHT was Nick’s lead squad and seemed nonchalantly confident. They comprised brothers Ben and Jamie, who are no strangers to high-speed karts, together with Fred Honnor and Nick Robinson. FIVE ALIVE is a familiar name here and ably led by Daryl
Ben Orza’s MEALS ON WHEELS have a great success rate at Thruxton, being past winners of the event. They have an advantage, despite their team name, of appearing to live entirely on lettuce leaves which is key to their impressive power/ weight ratio. The QV team is a much respected squad although this year featured some younger members of the Warburton and Lester families. Mike Lester was keeping a managerial eye on them but elected not to drive this time. The much heralded SCUDERIA ROSSO CORSA looked like hot favourites in the advance publicity, having international experience of racing at Monaco last year. All were seasoned Ferrari hillclimb racers and their team comprised top line drivers Chris Butler, Richard Prior, Mike Spicer and Nick Taylor. If appearances are anything to go by, they certainly looked the most professional with their identical race suits and a team manager – Ali Butler – efficiently sporting stopwatches and clip board. THE WHITE MICE was a new name to us but included
Shaun Powell (4) of the Pirelli team fends off DK Engineering (11) and the Odd Bods during the early wet part of the race.

John Ogilvie as team manager. They could have done with one or two more drivers. There was a strong Aston Martin flavour to SEX BOMBS RETURN, led by F355 Challenge driver Tim Mogridge and some of his mates from AMOC. Our hosts, Pirelli, always acquit themselves well in this event and are known to engage one or two local hot shoes who are aces at the circuit. This year they titled their team QUICKER THAN ROSSO, a name which may have had some subtle reference to Pirelli tyres but which evaded your scribe. The quickest driver in their team this time was Phil Lowe, whom we learned works full-time at the track building the Biz Thunderkarts. Phil explained that the engines last a couple of seasons but a new chassis is used every three months. Supporting Phil were Carl Naylor, who had made most of the arrangements for this racing weekend and is due to leave Pirelli in a few weeks time, Carl’s replacement at head office, James Prescott, and their popular tyre engineer who attends all our Ferrari races, Shaun Marriott. A last minute entry was SHILTECH STALLIONS, a team that included a couple of ladies (always popular at these events) under the guidance of Geoff Shilton and his son, Kyle.
Nick Cartwright’s second string, Skid Marks, in 4th. As always, this event was hugely enjoyed by everyone who took part and we thank Pirelli for their generosity in making it all possible. Our thanks also go to Carl Naylor for his tip top organisation. In the evening, a group of us – rather smaller than usual – met at the Regency Park Hotel at nearby Thatcham to enjoy a PreSeason Ferrari Dinner. It all went tickety-boo although the Polish barman, who seemed to have only arrived in the country that same day, was foxed by orders for anything more exotic than beer or lager. Still, we are supposed to be in training so we shouldn’t complain!
