CompRes is available by subscription and is published 10 times a year for the FERRARI OWNERS’ CLUB

FERRARICOMPETITIONRESULTS HERE IT IS! Welcome to the first issue of CompRes, a stripped down version of its forerunner, CompNews. We have dragged Miss Tonks out of the wine bar and we’re back in business.

Whilst the feel of this newsletter will be familiar we have taken the opportunity to carry out a few styling changes. The typeface is new, and may be welcomed by those with failing eyesight. We shall try where possible to include a few photographs– we would hate not to have a home for some of the super shots you send us. And, thanks to our new sponsors, MJC Decorating Limited, who have generously stepped into the breach after the ending of Ferrari UK’s support, we shall be printing in full colour, as previously. We shall publish (on an approximately monthly basis) all the detailed results, championship points, etc in all three of the Club’s competitive series as they unfold throughout the year. As a result there should be a seamless continuation of the Club’s

historical competition records. In order to make it easier to pick up what is going on in your particular field of competition we have colour-coded the headers: bright red for PMFC, deep maroon for Classic, and a verdant green for hillclimbing affairs. For articles of a more general nature the headers will be mafia black. So if you are not afflicted with protanopia, finding your way around the columns should be easy-peasy. Even if you suffer from the aforementioned failing eyesight or colour blindness, the picture on the front of this first edition’s cover shouldn’t prove to be too much of a trial. These lovelies were snapped at Le Mans last year by Paul Jarmyn. We can’t promise this standard of photo for every issue but even if the subject is only tenuously connected with Ferrari we’ll do our best. Finally, we should remind you that CompRes will be the principal medium for communicating with all the registered competitors in the three Club series. So please note any announcements about what is coming up, changes to dates (they never seem to remain the same), and information that you need to know. We shall also be continuing the group e-mail system in which all circuit racers, CompRes subscribers (if they ask us), and Ferrari preparation specialists (if advertise with us) will be included. The list of people on the system will be upgraded shortly for 2005.

FORMULA CLASSIC IN 2005 Although the dates of all the UK races are given on the Registration forms and in the Competition Calendar accompanying this issue of CompRes it may be useful to give some more detail, such as we have at this time, on the various race meetings. The season begins at Oulton Park on April 23/24. I hope to be able to ensure that all the Classic activity – both qualifying and the race – will be on the Sunday. We shall be using the full International (4.332km) course and racing starts at 12.00 noon. Before that time I have arranged for Ferrari owners to be able to take their road cars round the circuit in a demonstration. In addition, a space will be reserved in the paddock to permit a limited number of Area Group members to display their Ferraris. Next, we travel to Mallory Park for a one day race meeting on May 29. We haven’t raced Ferraris at Mallory for some years but since then a lot of improvements have taken place. I have managed to get some extra track time so we shall have a 15-minute qualifying session plus two 15-minute races. I am also working on plans to fly the Ferrari flag in a big way at this meeting – more news when it is all in place. Our overseas sortie to Zandvoort comes on June 1719. This is the famous Italia a Zandvoort meeting and the circuit will be the full GP course. I have negotiated lots of track time: we shall have two untimed practice sessions on the Friday of 40-mins each, on Saturday two 20-min qualifying sessions and a 12-lap race, with a second 12-lap

CompRes 1

race on the Sunday. There are some great deals to be had on accommodation and with the ferries, the details of which we shall be sending out quite soon. At the moment there are a few rooms available at keen prices at the NH hotel, one of the biggest and best in Zandvoort, which is handily located just outside the entrance to the circuit park. If you wish to reserve your accommodation quickly at this hotel (via their website) contact us without delay for the address. Following our Dutch trip we join PMFC at Snetterton for a one day meeting on Sunday, July 17. Thinking about it, I can almost sense the gorgeous smell of Jim and Janet’s bacon rolls as they sizzle in the early morning air. That old favourite, Castle Combe, comes up on Bank Holiday Monday, August 29. Again we share this meeting with PMFC and the format will be as last year: a qualifying session of 20 minutes followed, in the afternoon, by a similar duration race. I hope that we shall be able to use the Strawford Centre for Ferrari hospitality as we did in 2004. The final outing of the season is at Brands Hatch on the full Grand Prix circuit. This is the big A1 GP race meeting, the very first in the world so there should be a huge spectator attendance. It is rare indeed to have the opportunity to race on the exciting GP track and I hope there will be a maximum turnout of Classic Ferraris to justify the expense of buying this race. The timetable is still being worked on so that until this is finalised I am unable to give you the day(s) on which the Classic cars will be in action. We hope that everyone will agree that our 2005 calendar is a superb selection of the best UK tracks combined with our first essay abroad. It promises to be a season to remember – just make sure that you are part of it!

RA’s HILLCOMMENT Ferrari hibernation is fast coming to an end, with the opening rounds of FHCC at Easter not far off, and then the circuit racers will be out at Oulton Park a month later. The Easter Loton Park meeting looks like being a bumper way to start the hillclimb season. This first-ever double we have staged is interspersed by a splendid dinner at Loton Hall, the impressive Elizabethan pile and ancestral home of our host, Sir Michael Leighton – just across the road from the track. Regular FHCC competitors will know that we are as keen on wining and dining as driving, and further dinners are planned at Harewood, on May 14, and at Shelsley Walsh, on June 4. New competitors always get a big welcome and are very necessary too, as we tend to ‘lose’ people from time to time. The older ones sometimes fade away for obvious reasons and, perhaps surprisingly, emigration has taken a noticeable toll, with France and Australia proving popular. There are several new players expected to register for 2005, and they will be introduced in the next edition of CompRes. Twice as many lady drivers will be out this season and the unfair sex look like come under pressure from the fairer sex. PAULINE GOODWIN is joining LORRAINE HITCHMAN, and has

Adam Fleetwood, the 2004 British Hillclimb Championship winner by a huge margin, established 27 new hill records as he blitzed the opposition last season. Quite by chance I found myself sitting next to young Adam at breakfast following the Championship Prizegiving Dinner. We got to talking about the various hills and I asked him whether he was able to go flat through the twisty finishing stretch at Gurston Down. I told him that our sort of cars could do so and crossed the line at 90mph. Adam replied “the best speed I have had through the speed trap at the finish is 154mph – the road does get a bit thin up there.” Ferrari and Maserati historic race cars return to Shelsley Walsh for the Midland Automobile Club’s Centennial Meeting on Sunday, August 21. A special class sponsored by local Ferrari and Maserati dealer P J Evans is expected to attract some fairly exotic machinery, including sports-racing and Grand Prix tipos. The 2005 FHCC calendar is now finalised and here is the list of dates: March 27 March 28 April 30/May 1 May 14 May 28 June 4/5 June 18 July 17 July 24 August 7 August 21 September 17 September 24 October 15

FRANK BOTT

PIRELLI MARANELLO FERRARI CHALLENGE After considerable negotiation and changes of date, which delayed the issue of the series Regulations by almost two months, we have at last finalised the 2005 race programme. Despite all the problems I feel we have now got one of the best calendars of events of any UK Championship. The finalised calendar is as follows: April 23/24 June 24-26 July 17 August 29 Sept 8-10 Sept 23-25 October 1/2

This first edition of CompRes is dedicated to the memory of Frank Bott, who tragically passed away on 17 February after a short illness. Frank was a very special man: big in stature, big in personality, big in heart. He was a passionate lover of all things Ferrari and especially the Ferrari Owners’ Club, of which he was a past Chairman. As leader of the board he played a pivotal role in modernising the structure of the Club’s management, applying his unique no-nonsense but fair approach to the problems of the day. During his period as Chairman we worked very closely together, particularly when the Club appeared to be under threat from several quarters. I shall always remember those letters we devised together – a hallmark of Frank’s drafts to the ‘enemy’ was the frothy and courteous beginnings which you just knew would be a prelude to the deadly torpedo in the final paragraph. Frank loved life and loved people. His standards were exceptionally high and he expected similar standards of the colleagues with whom he worked. He didn’t suffer fools gladly as those who squirmed, when at the receiving end of his occasional withering criticism, will remember. Despite this he was incredibly kind, particularly to those he considered hadn’t had a fair deal of life’s cards. He had a fund of wonderfully amusing anecdotes, which only he could relate, that will be recalled for many a long year, and he was tremendous fun to be with. He playfully used to describe CompNews as “the best bog read around”. I have known Frank for as long as he has been a member of the Ferrari Owners’ Club – over 25 years. He was a formidable opponent on the hills and circuits, a dear friend, and I, along with his countless other friends, will miss him greatly. We send our deepest sympathy to Winifred, his loving wife.

Oulton Park Zolder Snetterton Castle Combe Silverstone Brands Hatch Spa

For the detail of some of the UK races – Oulton Park, Snetterton, and Castle Combe, you will need to look in the column relating to the Ferrari formula classic programme, although it should be noted that in the case of PMFC there will be double-header races at all these meetings. For the remaining rounds of the Championship you may find the following additional information useful. We return to Zolder after an absence of five years – we were last there in the year 2000. The race meeting is run by ADAC and I have secured a generous amount of track time for this first of our overseas events. The preliminary timetable is: Fri June 24 Qualifying 1 15.45 – 16.15 Sat June 25 Qualifying 2 11.35 – 11.55 Sun June 26 Race 1 (13 laps) 10.50 – 11.15 Race 2 (13 laps) 15.55 – 16.20 Documentation and scrutineering checks are from 09.00 hrs on the Friday. In addition to the track time indicated above I am trying to arrange a free testing session for Ferrari during Friday morning – more details when I have them. Competitors will be sent a full accommodation list with their entry forms nearer the time. Anyone who

CompRes 3

wishes to book their travel and accommodation before this is invited to contact us right away for an info pack. Following the Castle Combe race meeting at the end of August we move to Silverstone on September 8-10. This race meeting is on the full Grand Prix circuit, a course on which we have never raced before although in 1997 we raced on the similar Historic GP track (with a grid of 39 Ferraris!). Drivers have been quick to point out that September 8 is a Thursday, which is absolutely correct. Thursday is a test day additional to the meeting and will be charged by the organisers at £235.00 + VAT. On Fri September, Q1 (30 mins) will be in the morning, followed in the afternoon by Q2 (again, 30 mins). Our two 30 minute races will be on Saturday, the first in the morning, the second in the afternoon. Following our second race, the 24-hour GT race will commence. Perhaps the biggest event of the year will be at Brands Hatch on September 2325. The full GP circuit is being used for this inaugural A1 GP race meeting. The detailed timetable is not yet available but expect record crowds to be there. Our final race meeting of the season is at SpaFrancorchamps on October 1-2. Again, I have arranged lots of track time to make this meeting excellent value. I am trying to get a test session on the Friday at a time to be agreed. The rest of the preliminary programme is as follows: Sat Oct 1 Qualifying 1 10.40 – 11.00 Qualifying 2 15.10 – 15.30 Sun Oct 2 Race 1 (30 mins) 09.15 Race 2 (30 mins) 17.10 As before, nearer the time we shall be issuing entry forms with hotel and ferry details for those who want them.

BACK COPIES At Chevy Chase we have a number of back copies of Ferrari

Competition News. A list of these is available on request. If you wish to complete your collection these old issues of CompNews can be sent to you for £2.00 per copy including postage. Email us at cs.man@btinternet.com to have the list sent to you.

PRE-SEASON DINNER AND TEAM KARTING RACE Earlier this month, booking forms were sent out for the 2005 Pre-Season Dinner on Saturday, 19 March as well as entry forms for the 3-Hour karting race to be held at Thruxton in the afternoon. If, for some reason, you have been omitted from these invitations and would like to take part in one or both of these events, please contact us without delay. The Dinner will be held at the Valle d’Oro, reputedly the best Italian restaurant in Newbury. I remind everybody that reservations taken from our block booking at the Hilton Newbury North must be made no later than 5 March in order to obtain the special room rate we have negotiated. This promises to be a super weekend so don’t miss out!

DRIVING DAYS Driving days? You may be slightly confused by this headline. Once upon a time the Ferrari Owners’ Club organised circuit hire for its members to allow them to exercise their cars, and the event was called a ‘test day’. After a while it was felt that this title suggested that the owners were engaged in some flat out blitz which could be construed as being highly dangerous and was not at all descriptive of what actually went on – simply a bunch of Ferrari members driving their cars at high speed around a race track in a generally responsible and entirely safe fashion. So a new name for this activity – ‘track day’ – was introduced and the name is now used by virtually every other motoring club in the UK as well as the recognised body that oversees these events to make

sure they are operated to a minimum standard and observe recommended safety procedures, the Association of Track Day Organisers (ATDO) of which the FOC is a member. Now, in 2005, some consider that the name ‘track day’ is far too racy for the average Ferrari owner to contemplate (but not, I hasten to add, for the readers of CompRes!). So the events have now been rebadged as ‘driving days’ – that is ‘driving’ as in rain, Miss Daisy, me mad, etc. It is hoped that this more benign label will arrest the problem of dwindling numbers of owners wanting to drive their Ferraris in the manner for which they are designed. But do not let the new title fool you. It will be just the same as last year’s track day – the same ultra professionally run event with proper briefings, the same emphasis on the highest standards of safety, the same free-of-charge availability of tuition and guidance from ARDS qualified instructors, and the same fun and enjoyment most owners have had in the past. This year the Club has tried to synchronise the dates of these events to races in the PMFC and Formula Classic calendars but with limited success due to the constant rescheduling of dates brought about by Bernie’s constant mucking about with the F1 programme. The dates announced for Club driving days are as follows: April 18 May 10 June 8 July 5 August 3 Sept 21

Silverstone Oulton Park Prestwold Hall Snetterton Bedford Autodrome Brands Hatch

So, whatever you do, don’t be put off by the new name. We want to see as many cars as possible out on the circuits because it is here that owners develop their skills and abilities. And, who knows, they may find they want to move on and become part of the PMFC or Classic race series and have some real fun!

THE 2004 ANNUAL CLUB AWARDS

16

Following the usual thrashing of the computers at Chevy Chase, the tabulated results of the so called ‘House Points’ has been completed for all competitors who took part in any of the Club’s competitions (although we don’t concern ourselves with concours events). In 2003 we had a record breaking total of 84 Club members who took part in at least one event. Last season the figure was down slightly, at 79, but was still an excellent tally for a club of our size. All the glittering prizes will be presented at the AGM and Lunch at Whittlebury Hall on Sunday, 17 April, so please mark the date in your diary. Even if you weren’t fortunate to bag a trophy it is nice to applaud those who beat you! One final thing: if you think your points total is incorrect, please contact us right away and we will double check. A hangover from Christmas is the solution to the Swifty crossword which appeared in the last issue of the 2004 CompNews. Prizes were offered to the senders of the first three correct solutions to be opened on the closing date of 17 January. Because it was the last ever Christmas Swifty we decided to be incredibly generous and award a prize to everyone who submitted a correct solution by the due date. On this more munificent basis there were six winners: MIKE FURNESS, LORRAINE HESLOP, RICHARD PRIOR, BARBARA and JEFF SIMPSON, MATT SWIFT, and BARRY WOOD. Congratulations to each of the winners. The prizes they won varied but we hope were safely received.
