WSU Onion Cultivar Trial

A Self-Guided Tour

he annual Washington State University (WSU) onion field day typically draws a crowd. While that is most often a good thing, as we know, it’s grounds for cancelation in 2020. In respect of state mandates against large gatherings and deciding that it’s better to be safe than sorry, organizers opted for self-guided tours of the WSU onion cultivar trial in lieu of the usual field day event. WSU regional vegetable specialists Carrie Wohleb and Tim Waters invited growers, seed company reps and others in the industry to view the trial results at CSS Farms east of Pasco, Washington, on their own during the last week of August. This year’s trial, grown under center pivot irrigation, included 51 entries from eight seed companies. The trial was harvested in mid-September, and yields were average. There was a small shift

toward larger bulb sizes, probably due to slightly lower stands, according to Wohleb. “It’s all relative,” she points out. “Within this one trial, you’re going to be comparing one cultivar that has been grown under the same conditions and has had to face the same challenges as the one next to it, so the playing field is level.” The onions from the trial will be stored and evaluated for post-storage quality in February. WSU has been conducting an onion cultivar trial since 1984. This is the first year “in a very long time” without an onion field day, according to Wohleb. “The field day is usually a good time for onion people to get together and hear what’s happening in the research and meet their onion seed sales teams,” Wohleb says. “The trial may not be as useful as a seed sales tool without a field day event this year. But, the seed companies will still get the data on the performance of their cultivars under our environment, and that data will also be shared with onion growers.”

scheduled event, albeit with changes. Such were the circumstances that those at the Malheur Experiment Station in Ontario, Oregon, found themselves in to make their variety day happen. A single day was expanded to three. Attendees had to schedule a two-hour window to view the trials, and there were no speakers. The variety days were a self-service affair this year. But with a plot map in hand and signage provided by the station, growers were able to see how competing varieties performed. Station director Stuart Reitz said that attendees this year got what they always do: the opportunity to evaluate independently grown varieties side by side. “We tried to make the best of a not ideal situation. We had good growing conditions and some big onions out there,” Reitz said. The station will have a full report on the trial at the winter growers’ meeting, but what form the meeting will take has yet to be determined.

Here Today, Gone Tomorrow: Can Early Terminated Onion Trap Crops Reduce White Rot Infestations?

An aerial image shows the Allium trap crop trial at the University of California Agricultural & Natural Resources Intermountain Research and Extension Center. The trial is evaluating five termination timings (second, third, fourth, fifth and sixth true leaf stage) and the effects of an infurrow fungicide (penthiopyrad) to stimulate sclerotial germination and prevent reproduction of the white rot pathogen, Sclerotium cepivorum. Photo courtesy Robert Wilson, UC-ANR

By Gia Khuong Hoang Hua and Jeremiah Dung, Central Oregon Agricultural Research and Extension Center, Oregon State University

W

hite rot is an extremely destructive soil-borne disease that threatens the production of onion, garlic and other Allium species worldwide. The disease causes root and bulb decay, eventually

32

Onion World • November 2020

resulting in premature death. The fungus that causes white rot, Sclerotium cepivorum, survives in the soil as round, poppy seed-sized structures called sclerotia. As few as one sclerotium per

quart of soil can initiate disease, and sclerotia can survive in the soil for at least 10 to 20 years. Fields infested with white rot are often abandoned from Allium production. Unfortunately, avoiding infested fields is becoming more difficult as infested acreage increases. In California alone, there are approximately 21,000 acres of fields in commercial onion and garlic production areas that are infested by white rot, resulting in significant yield losses. Sclerotia of the pathogen remain dormant in the soil and are stimulated to germinate by volatile sulfur compounds present in Allium root exudates. Previous research focused on the use of sulfur compounds as sclerotial germination stimulants. When applied to soil in the absence of an Allium crop, sulfur compounds can “trick” the sclerotia into germinating, causing them to exhaust their energy reserves and die. Several sources of sulfur compounds have been tested with varying degrees of success, including garlic juice, oil and powder, as well as synthetic sources of sulfur compounds. One compound in particular, diallyl disulfide (DADS), was shown to induce sclerotia germination and reduce inoculum levels by over 90 percent in the field, but commercial sources of DADS are no longer available for agricultural

use. Thus, our recent efforts have focused on developing early termination of Allium trap crops to reduce sclerotia levels in soil.

Testing Trap Crops

Traditionally, trap crops are planted to attract insect or nematode pests from another crop and their use has been more limited for disease control (primarily insect-vectored viruses). Ideally, trap crops are species in which the pests fail to survive or reproduce – essentially a biological dead-end. For white rot, we hypothesize that we can use Allium crops to stimulate sclerotia germination and, if terminated in a timely and effective manner, prevent multiplication of the pathogen, thereby reducing inoculum levels for subsequent Allium crops. Several growth chamber and greenhouse experiments were conducted at Oregon State University Central Oregon Agriculture Research and Extension Center (OSU COAREC) to demonstrate the potential for early termination of Allium trap crops to help reduce white rot inoculum in soil. In these experiments, white, red, sweet or bunching onions were planted in white rot-infested soil and mechanically terminated at three, seven and 11 weeks post-emergence (wpe). We found that all four of the alliums significantly reduced soil sclerotia populations by up to 55 percent when terminated at three wpe and by 59 percent at seven wpe. These results indicate that the sclerotia germinated but pathogen reproduction was halted. However, the number of sclerotia in the soil began to increase when plants were terminated at 11 wpe, suggesting that the crop was terminated too late and the pathogen was producing new sclerotia at this point. Greenhouse and field trials are currently underway at OSU COAREC and the University of California Agricultural & Natural Resources (UC-ANR) Intermountain Research and Extension Center (with collaborator Robert Wilson) to evaluate early terminated Allium crops to reduce white rot. In addition to different termination timings, we are investigating two termination methods (mechanical vs. herbicides) and if infurrow fungicides can be used at planting

to inhibit reproduction of the fungus on the trap crop. If the results are positive, future research can be conducted to evaluate other Allium species for their potential use as trap crops, the utility of degree-day and/or crop phenology models to inform termination timing and reduce the risk of pathogen multiplication, and the economic use of trap crops to reduce white rot in commercial production systems. Other ongoing work related to this project includes field trials near Fresno, California, evaluating alternative sulfur

compounds for their ability to induce sclerotia germination (with collaborator Tom Turini, UC-ANR Cooperative Extension Fresno County) and the microencapsulation of garlic oil for use as a germination stimulant in the field (with collaborator Michael Qian, OSU Food Science and Technology). This work is supported by Specialty Crop Research Initiative grant no. 201851181-28435 from the USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture.

Trident Takes Center Stage Story and photos by Dave Alexander, Publisher

R

eleasing a new onion variety is a huge endeavor for any onion breeder. Things move slowly, and it is not a simple process. From concept to market can take up to 20 years. Breeders have to take many things into account and try to determine what growers will want in the distant future. At the Crookham Company’s Summer Onion Show, held Aug. 26 in Wilder, Idaho, Crookham Company breeder David Whitwood explained the first thing they do when developing a new variety is talk to growers, identifying their concerns and needs. The trick to developing a successful variety is finding out what will be the growers’ next big problem and what they are missing in the varieties they are currently using.

Forward Looking

“What you really need to be doing is looking eight, 10, 12 years down the road because that’s when that variety will finally come into play,” Whitwood said. Factors such as better disease tolerance, more uniformity, darker scale, scale retention and storability can all make up a “bigger picture” of what breeders develop. An example of forward-looking varietal development is pink root tolerance. Compared to 20 years ago, there is less ground

available now to farmers, leading to tighter rotations. Less rotation can lead to more disease, so varieties today feature pink root tolerance, something varieties didn’t have two decades ago.

Trident

Crookham Company launched and promoted two new yellow long-day varieties last year – Caldwell and Caliber. Another yellow was also ready, but wasn’t pushed by the company. Crookham needed more data on how it was working in the Treasure Valley and found it was working remarkably well. That variety, Trident, is now ready for center stage. Trident matures earlier than Caldwell and Caliber, giving growers another harvest option and more flexibility. If all three varieties were planted, Trident would be harvested first, followed by Caldwell and then Caliber. In addition to the earlier maturity, Trident is a multi-use variety, suitable for processing and the fresh market. It has high pink root and Fusarium tolerance, upright tops and 97 percent single centers. The most unique thing about Trident is that it grows well in Washington, the Midwest and the Northeast. This three-pronged geography is what originally gave Trident its name. Rarely do

varieties work well in all three markets, but the later Treasure Valley confirmation actually makes it a four-market onion. CEO George Crookham joked, “We should have called it Four-dent.”

More to Come

West Coast Crookham sales representative Lyndon Johnson said that the three new long-days are performing well. There are also more varieties that will be introduced in the coming years that will have even better improvements. Dubbed OLYX11-249 and OLYX11-250, these two yellow candidates have been doing well in early trials. They will undergo bigger block trials for the 2021 growing season. OLYX11-249 is a main-season yellow long-day variety with maturity in 115-118 days. It has nice, upright tops with glossy foliage that is well adapted to the Western U.S. Strong roots provide great pink root and Fusarium resistance on this variety.

Crookham Onion Show Scales are a light copper color with great scale retention for long-term storage. The bulbs are very highly single-centered. The 250 variety matures in 118-120 days and features strong roots and a great disease resistance package. It has an erect structure with glossy foliage that aids in thrips tolerance and consistent bronze scale color with very high single centers. Like 249, 250 has very good long-term storage capability. When these two cultivars hit the market, it will be thanks to Crookham’s forward-looking breeders who conceived the varieties years earlier. Attendees at the Crookham Company’s Summer Onion Show discuss varieties in Wilder, Idaho.

The annual Crookham Company’s Summer Onion Show provides growers the opportunity to see all the company’s varieties.

Trident, a newer Crookham jumbo long-day yellow, has 115 days to maturity, slotting it ahead of Caldwell and Caliber.

New Products

Organic Crop Enhancement Product Hits Market

Agnition has launched Generate, a crop enhancement product meant to boost soil and plant health for organic production of a wide range of crops including onions. The OMRI-listed product is the latest in an extension of Agnition’s organic line. Generate is a natural product that utilizes patented Microbial Catalyst technology to stimulate existing microbes in the soil by unlocking enzymes and releasing more nutrients from fertilizers that could otherwise remain tied up in the soil and unavailable to the plant. This can result in improved emergence, greater root mass, larger biomass, taller plants, improved stress tolerance, increased yields, and improved plant and soil health, according to Agnition. Visit www.agnition.com.

APE Adds Water Treatment Products

Automated Produce Equipment (APE) has formed a new partnership with water processing company AquaHD. According to the company, many pack houses are looking to decrease their water usage and reduce wastewater tariff costs through the reuse of processwater. When attempting to handle these water streams, solids separation becomes the main challenge in the treatment process. From the NOA

Pack Your Bags for Cheyenne for NOA’s Annual Convention By René Hardwick, National Onion Association Director of Public and Industry Relations

W

e’ve found a way to meet in the middle. The National Onion Association (NOA) has rescheduled its annual winter convention for Cheyenne, Wyoming, a historic Western town that is an icon in the United States’ movement west. We’re hoping its central U.S. location will make it easy for the NOA membership and others in the industry to attend from both sides of the country and every place in between. On Dec. 6-9, we will meet for our annual convention in place of our originally planned convention in Bermuda. That and our previously planned summer convention in Nashville, Tennessee, have both been pushed to 2021. We will converge on the Little America Hotel and Resort just west of Cheyenne, a central location that should be easier for our membership to reach, regardless of their geography. Please note, this meeting will start on a Sunday and finish on a Wednesday, a scheduling departure from past meetings.

Onion World • November 2020

Recognizing that 2020 has turned everyone’s plans upside down because of the coronavirus, we also know that we must sit down and have some conversations about some looming issues important to all of us. This year, that includes foreign trade, Canadian and Mexican onion imports, coronavirus relief, Panamanian restrictions on onions and food safety options. “We really need to have strong attendance at this meeting,” said NOA President Doug Bulgrin. “Our business and the issues don’t stop because of the virus. The board and members need to meet in person.” We will not take this meeting lightly along the lines of the continuing pandemic. In public areas, the hotel does require face coverings. “We can have our annual meeting and meet all the requirements of the state and hotel as far as social distancing and face coverings when needed,” said Greg Yielding, executive vice president and chief executive of the NOA. “We’re taking all the precautions, and we’ll be able to accommodate everyone’s needs within guidelines.” The agenda has yet to be fully set, but we do plan for our banquet dinner and raffle to be held on Monday, Dec. 7 at the hotel. On Tuesday, we’ll go to the Bunkhouse Bar & Grill, just minutes west of Cheyenne, where members can enjoy some live music and a great dance floor. Wednesday, Dec. 9, we will have our traditional board meeting and crop report breakfast. The agenda will allow time to explore this historic town, built exclusively as a hub of the Transcontinental Railroad, the first federally sanctioned railroad construction after the Civil War and the opening of the West. It was completed in 1869. Rail enthusiasts will love to see the Big Boy Steam Engine and the Union Pacific Depot, the last of the grand 19th century depots remaining on the Transcontinental Railroad. There are many other downtown sights, as well as great hiking, cross-country skiing trails and sledding hills in the area. Some members may even want to schedule a hunt. It’s been such a long year, and our industry has been under some threats amid trade issues, an onion recall and the continuing pandemic. The NOA wants to advocate for all associated with the American onion industry on these important issues in Washington D.C. If you’re not a member, and you believe in these issues as strongly as we do, you may attend the convention if an existing member sponsors you. Registration ends Nov. 27. To register, visit www.onions-usa.org/members/conventions. You also can become a member! NOA member fees are much less than other advocacy organizations and associations, and we are singularly focused on onion industry advocacy in Washington D.C. and beyond.
