Before your hike, make reservations for dinner at 4UR Ranch. Enjoy a fabulous meal – you earned it!

Fall Fly-In Weekend

One of the best ways to see Creede and Mineral County is from the air, and the best time of year is during the Fall color explosion. You will have opportunities from about Labor Day through Octo-

ber. A great opportunity happens every year during the third week in September. Fly-in for a breakfast at the Mineral County Airport (jet fuel available). Then come into town for the festivities of Cruisin’ the Canyon Car Show. We have plenty of winter lodging options – stay the night!

Horseback Riding

Trails galore interlace the stunning San Juan’s around Creede and throughout Mineral County. What better way to spend a day than viewing it all from the back of a horse? The following offer guided horseback rides: Freemon’s Guest Ranch, Frazier Outfitters, and Cottonwood Cove. After a day of riding, head back to town and relax on the patio at Kip’s Grill with a delicious burger or baja tacos and live music!

Creek Falls, just a couple miles away. Park in the back of the Silver Thread Campground and find a 900 ft trail leading down to the falls. Continue down Highway 149 and visit the Studios at Bristol for beautiful artwork and handcrafted items. Next, enjoy a delicious burger and shake from Freemon’s Guest Ranch and General Store. Cash only!

Stargazing in Creede

Grab dinner to go from the Miner’s Restaurant, and take a gorgeous drive up Pool Table Road toward Hansen’s Mill. Find the perfect spot to spend the evening gazing at the Milky Way exceptionally bright in our dark skies.

Hike to Phoenix Park

Paddle Boarding

Yes, in Creede! Rent a paddle board from San Juan Sports and ask the knowledgeable staff where their favorite spots are. Spend some time on a pond, reservoir, or, for the adventurous, on the river. Head over to Pizzeria 8852 for pizza and a delicious salad!

Start your 2-mile hike at the Phoenix Park Trailhead or Jeep/ATV up to the old miner’s cabin. The trail leads you to another set of Creede’s famous waterfalls. Wildflowers will be bursting with color in the summer, and you may be lucky enough to spot a moose so don’t forget your camera! Head to town for some people-watching and a delicious burger or hot dog from The Best Little Dog House on Main Street!

Mountain Biking

Deep Creek Trail is a fantastic trail for mountain biking. After carrying your bike across a small bridge a couple miles into the trail, you’ll find yourself in a lush forest. In the late summer and early fall, take a few minutes to stop and collect wild raspberries! Be sure to pack plenty of water and snacks for your adventure. After a day of riding, have dinner on the patio at Cascada Bar & Grill for a great Mexican meal!

Night Life In Creede

Start with a fantastic dinner at Arp’s. While enjoying dessert, consider your options: attend an evening performance of the 53rd season of the nationally recognized Creede Repertory Theatre; walk across the street to an intimate concert at Big River 10

Music; or go around the corner to the Tommyknocker for varied live music offerings and late night hops and spirits. On Saturdays from late June to mid-September, you might go to the Ruth Theatre for CRT’s late night improv show – Boomtown!

Fern Creek Trail

Spend the morning hiking Fern Creek Trail. The West Fork Fire Complex came frighteningly close to Creede a few years ago. This hike offer an opportunity to truly view the cycle of recovery. Hike among the burned standing trees and new ground growth. Purple fireweed is bursting in the summer months and creates a dramatic contrast to the surrounding landscape. This hike is one you won’t find elsewhere! The area can also be explored via ATV/ UTV. Creede & Mineral County Visitor Guide

Rockhounding in Mineral County

Mineral deposits made the Rocky Mountains famous! Native Americans used them; Explorers were enticed by the wealth they promised; prospectors were rewarded; and industries born. Settlements exploded with the boom and faded to memory when the US adopted the gold standard and the silver market crashed. Stop by the Visitor Center for rockhounding maps. Want a guided tour? Finding Gems at Aspen Inn will take you on a rockhounding adventure! After prospecting head back into Creede and enjoy BBQ under the shade at Big 6 BBQ! COLORADO SCENIC AND HISTORIC BYWAY

south fork creede lake city gunnison Drive the Silver Thread Byway

This scenic and historic drive is one of Colorado’s hidden gems. Connecting three counties and crossing the Continental Divide twice (at Spring Creek Pass and Slumgullion), it’s truly one of a kind. North Clear Creek Falls is right off the highway, and is one of the ‘most photographed waterfalls in Colorado.’ For good reason — it’s breathtaking! Enjoy shopping and dining in towns along the way. Do not forget your camera – you will have lots of photo-ops at scenic pull-outs and interpretive sites. Be sure to pick up a guidebook at the Visitor Center.

Follow the Silver Thread as it weaves in and out of towns full of remarkable stories, pulled from a rich history, alluring outdoor adventures, and stunning scenery.

DRIVE THE HISTORIC BACHELOR LOOP This 17-mile self driving loop begins and ends in town and takes you 2000 feet above Creede. A journey into our mining past and an exploration of Creede’s scenic wonders, it has something for everyone. Drive past mines that were part of the 1890’s Silver Boom. Walk through the old Bachelor town site, once home to over 1500 people! Stop at Last Chance Mine and take an underground mine tour. Look for wildlife (especially moose!) at the Allen’s Crossing beaver ponds. Don’t forget your camera! Hungry now? Get some loaded mac-n-cheese and a fried pie from The Mac Mine back in town. Yum! 16

Tips for Driving the Loop • Allow at least 1 hour for the tour. • The road has some narrow stretches and

steep grades that require caution; check road conditions during inclement weather.

• Two-wheel drive vehicles might consider

driving the tour starting south of town, in order to descend the steepest areas.

• Most of the property along the route is

private. Please respect the posted signs and do not trespass or wander beyond fences or gates. Creede & Mineral County Visitor Guide

Twenty miles and 30 minutes outside of Creede, turn left off of Hwy 149 onto FS Rd 520 and make the drive to the Rio Grande Reservoir. Hike, fish, and picnic in this gorgeous area. Grab lunch supplies from the Kentucky Belle Market before heading out and finish the day with delicious ice cream from Freemon’s General Store.

Rafting

We have guided and rental options for rafting on the Rio Grande! For guided trips, check out Mountain Man Rafting (their shop is located in South Fork, but they offer trips starting in Creede). If you really know what you’re doing, call Cottonwww.creede.com

wood Cove to rent a raft for a day. Be sure to wear a life jacket - that water can be COLD! Before you head out, stop at Aspen Inn for some delicious Turkish coffee! After a full day of rafting, Blue Creek Lodge is a favorite for dinner and pie!

Fishing on the Rio Grande

Creede History & Museums In A Day

Start your day at the Visitor’s Center on the south end of Main Street. Check out the scale model of North Creede from 1892. Walk over to Mines & Memories with its extensive collection of artifacts and photographs from the old silver mines. Your next stop is the Creede Historical Museum, located at the old depot in Basham Park, where you can get to know our wild west past. Your final stop is the Underground Mining Museum and their excellent tours. It’s carved into the mountain, just up the canyon, north of downtown Creede!

Hike the Hobbit Trail

This hike is the favorite of many locals. Before you head to the trail – stop at the Kentucky Belle Market for drinks and snacks. This hike starts about a mile and a half north of town along the Bachelor Loop. The trail takes you to the top of Campbell Mountain and overlooks East Willow and a few old mining structures (including the Kentucky Belle mine!). Experienced hikers might opt to clamber down the last two hundred yards for a spectacular view of Creede. After your hike, kick back

...a spectacular display of Alpine wildflowers...

on the Tommyknocker Tavern’s deck with a cold drink, a fresh salad, and delicious BBQ. We recommend their Molly S, a sweetand-spicy sandwich named after another of the mines you might spy on your hike!

Lake City for a Day

Take a drive to Lake City along the Silver Thread Byway. Make sure to check out Lake San Cristobal when heading in. It’s the second largest body of water in Colorado. Jeep and ATV rentals are available from Lake City Auto & Sports. Rent one for a day and head to American Basin, known for its spectacular display of Alpine wildflowers. Note, the drive is difficult but gorgeous.

Spend a Day at Wheeler

Hidden deep in National Forest its Wheeler Geologic Area, an area so strange, it is referred to as “The City of Gnomes,” “White Shrouded Ghosts,” and “Dante’s Lost Souls.” The journey in is approximately 20 miles round trip, with the final 1/4 mile hiking only. Luckily, there are two trails to get there. Both offer completely different experiences. An experienced offroader will enjoy the challenges posed by the 7-mile long, sometimes muddy, often narrow, rough and rocky road (we recommend taking a Jeep or ATV). A hiker will appreciate the quiet solitude afforded by the shorter, 5-mile hiking trail. While the trek in can be difficult, what awaits the traveler are haunting

and virtually impenetrable badlands. A unique and natural phenomenon, Wheeler Geologic Area was born approximately 30 million years ago when the LaGarita Caldera exploded and sent volcanic ash into the atmosphere. The ash settled in the LaGaritas and created a vista of sandstone-like spires, domes and pinnacles. Wheeler was Colorado’s first National Monument, but the designation was removed to decrease traffic and help preserve it’s fragile ecosystem. Please, treat this precious area with care! Wheeler is an all-day trip: pick up breakfast from MJ’s Cafe, pack plenty of snacks and bring your lunch. Some hike in and camp out at the trail head – make it an over night trip!

Creede Donkey Dash and Independence Day Fireworks by Bob Seago

June 9, 2018

Burro racing is a great sport begun by some of Colorado’s 19th-century miners. Those hardy characters used burros to carry mining tools and supplies through the Rocky Mountains as they prospected for gold, silver, and other valuable ores. Legend has it that two miners found gold in the same location, and raced each other back to town to be the first to stake a claim. Neither could ride their animal because of its heavy load, therefore a basic rule of burro racing was established: no riders! Creede’s Donkey Dash abides by these rules, and starts and ends

on Main Street, looping up the historic Bachelor Loop and down the winding West Willow Creek 4x4 road for about 10 miles! Mini Donkey races, live music, and other festivities make cheering at the finish line an all day affair!

June 10, 2018

Join the annual free-style soapbox derby down Main Street! The race features multiple heats from all age groups. Only 3 rules: rides must steer, brake and stop! (well, and no motors or pedal power - let gravity do the work!)

You Should Know

Distance to Creede

How will I be affected by the altitude?

Creede’s elevation is 8,852 feet above sea level, and everyone reacts differently to the altitude. Even if you are in top physical condition, the altitude can affect your body and you can easily develop acute mountain sickness, commonly known as “altitude sickness.” Check with your personal physician before traveling to any high-altitude destination, and take these steps to lessen or prevent the effects of the altitude: • Drink at least three quarts of water a day. • Avoid overdoing it the first few days you are at high altitude. • Get medical attention immediately if these symptoms occur: headache, fatigue, poor coordination or shortness of breath.
