or over 100 years too many, we Utah residents have quietly suffered snickering jabs from persons living in more uppity states and cities. Since the advent of television (invented by Beaver, Utah born Philo Farnsworth) and radio it has only gotten worse. Who among us hasn’t cringed when a late night television show guest has thought it funny to mock us with clichéd witticisms about multiple wives, weak beer, backwater residents, LDS Temple rituals, and the shiny white teeth of Donny and Marie? Ok, we spot them Ted Bundy, but after that, Utah has produced more than its share of famous citizens— where would buckets of tears be without “superstars” like Coalville born Tony Geary of General Hospital? Or Roseanne Barr, Loretta Young and David Archuletta? We jumped the gun on cold fusion, but there is no stopping the positive life saving science of the Huntsman Cancer Institute. Utah Valley’s Word Perfect didn’t win the word processing war with Microsoft Word, but it did signal that Utah could compete on a national stage with the tech big boys. The result? Utah is now fully transformed as a tech haven (with a special nod to Clearfield’s Nolan Bushnell of Atari). The moniker Silicon Slopes is a world-wide brand with the enterprising businesses that comprise it among the tech world’s best known and fastest growing. There are many, many more. Utah companies and Utah individuals make our lives better each day with their stalwart commitment to being the best at what they do each and every day. They come from every walk of life, often starting with the most humble of beginnings. They, to a person, remain humble. On the following pages you will find their stories, each intending to let you know a little more about them, but with the added benefit that learning about others also teaches us to learn about ourselves. We believe you will read slices of your own history in many of them, for, you, too are Utah. We all are. More and more, everyday, it becomes easier to not only admit to being from Utah, but bragging about it as well. I’m born and raised here, and without question, Utah is a pretty great place to be. We are all Utah. Enjoy.

ome of the Jazz, Grizzlies, Real Salt Lake, Royals, Utes, Bees and others, sports are integral to the fabric of the Utah community. Hoping to fuse the game-time atmosphere with a complete dining experience, Lisa and Dave Forman launched Legends Sports Pub in downtown Salt Lake City. While the sports bar is a local success today, it wasn’t smooth sailing the first time the pair traded in their white-collar jobs for an apron. “My background is in corporate sales and Dave worked in exploration drilling and mining,” Lisa said. “We got tired of traveling all the time and not being home with our kids. We had no experience in the area, but my husband saw something in the newspaper one day and said, hunny, why don’t we try this.’ It was a struggle at first, there was a steep learning curve and we knew absolutely nothing about the restaurant industry. To say we failed at first is an understatement.” The secret in creating a now flourishing sports bar? It lies in the values we find in sports—dedication to a cause, hard work and respect. “We were both athletes,” Lisa explained. “I played basketball, volleyball and track and my husband played football and track. All of our children were athletes, too—our daughter participated in cheer, and our other three boys played baseball and hockey. Our youngest was into

competitive hockey. When he was 14, he was on a travel team and did really well and played Junior Hockey. We all learned valuable lessons playing sports. It teaches you hard work, discipline, getting along with teammates, respect, stuff we wanted to emulate in our business.” When we think of sports bars, we often think of tasteless, unhealthy food. At Legends, that’s far from the case—the Formans love stocking their shelves with local ingredients, spirits and beer. Quality service and meals created a haven for not just sports viewers, but corporate meetings, wedding parties, celebrations of life and birthdays. “Our food differentiates ourselves from everyone else. Everyone has an idea of what sports bar food is, and it’s not good—it’s deep fried and unhealthy. It’s a lot of work, but it’s what we believe in. You can get alcohol and TV’s anywhere, but you can’t always get good food. “You still have to get people in the door if the Jazz, RSL or the Utes aren’t doing well or are out of season. So we try our best to get people in no matter what sport is going on. We offer our

801.355.3598 677 SOUTH 200 WEST

private VIP room free of cost, fit with projectors and sound systems for corporate events—if someone is already coming into our place and ordering food and drinks, we don’t think it’s right to charge even more on top of that to rent a room. As a mainstay in the valley, the Formans have plans to improve customers’ experience at Legends even further with a new weekend brunch, all day breakfast and a Bloody Mary bar. An additional location is in the works, too. However, it’s the relationships with everyone that steps through the door that are most fulfilling for Lisa and her family. “It’s the hug, smile or experience that we thrive off of. That’s what makes it worth it. We want everyone who comes in to feel our love and energy. You never know what someone is going through and how good it can feel getting away for a little bit in a good environment. It’s our goal to make sure they know we care and are most grateful for their business.”

The Salt Lake City establishment has been dedicated to growing the minds and educating future estheticians since its inception in 1995. Skinworks offers students a robust education in the medical and laser side of skincare, as well as the rewarding and relaxing side of the spa industry. Owner and school director Natalie Parkin has played an integral role in the growth and prosperity of the skincare industry in Utah since she took the reigns in 2005. She has a professional background from Enterprise and brought her corporate expertise and vision to Skinworks. In 2014, Natalie completed the Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses program, which led to revamping Skinworks already successful business segments into an industry leader in the Salt Lake market. Her passion for esthetics expands beyond even Skinworks she is the secretary of the Utah Beauty School Owners Association as well as a member on the ASCP National Skin Care Schools Council Leadership Board. In addition to receiving an education in spa treatments and skincare, students leave Skinworks with the knowledge of what it takes to become successful in their own personal financial wellness with business classes designed to coach them through developing a lasting clientele. Each student is unique and has their own desires and needs. Skinworks offers small class sizes, convenient scheduling, as well as full or part-time training so you can finish quickly or study around your schedule. With access to financial aid, they make it studying esthetics easy and affordable. Along with their classroom education is a student spa with a loyal following, designed to mimic the feel and aura of a professional environment in order to provide Skinworks students the real-world application and experience that can drive them towards becoming employed upon graduation.

ince 2007 Utah Support Advocates for Recovery Awareness (USARA), has built a thriving Recovery Community Organization (RCO) and in 2011 opened Utah’s first Recovery Community Center (RCC) in Salt Lake County. USARA’s mission is to celebrate, advocate, support and empower people in all stages of addiction recovery. USARA’s Recovery Community Center is a vibrant and hospitable place that welcomes people in all stages of recovery. Both individuals in recovery and family members are offered free support and help to find community resources to engage and sustain long-term recovery. The RCC hosts all sorts of recovery support meetings and activities ranging from Family Support, 12-step groups, trauma-informed support groups, SMART Recovery, LGBTQ focused recovery and familyfriendly social activities. USARA’s approach to recovery is to focus on solutions that involve mobilizing individuals, family members, and community partners. One of USARA’s founding principles is to embrace “all pathways of recovery,” that the path is defined only by the individual, and recognizing that recovery is

“a process of change through which individuals improve their health and wellness, live a self-directed life, and strive to reach their full potential.” Also, USARA promotes the development of emerging peer leaders who are encouraged to advocate and raise awareness about recovery in Utah, create new opportunities for other people in recovery, and learn new skills that help sustain their long-term recovery. USARA also hosts annual events such as Recovery Day in September at the Gallivan Center and the Rally for Recovery in February at the State Capitol. It is the voices of emerging leaders, family members and allies at these public events that inform the general public, policymakers, health and social service providers about the many ways that people recover from addiction. USARA is proud to offer a unique experience in an environment that brings together hope and community for individuals to connect to recovery. If you or a loved one is looking for a welcoming space and compassionate support in your path to recovery from addiction, call USARA at 385-2100320, check out their website at www.myusara.com, or stop by their Recovery Community Center at 180 E. 2100 S., Suite 100, SLC, UT 84115. Everyone is welcome.

located just across the parking lot from Smith’s Ballpark,” says Rob, “and we have a really nice patio so we get a good turnout on it for game days. And with the Trax stop just across the street, we’re kind of a natural stopover.” Ron added, “We were originally looking for a building downtown, but with the 1300 South freeway exits so close, and Trax, and the ballpark... We just decided we wanted to put our energy in here. It’s home now.” Rob and Ron agree that the big draw isn’t from the baseball fans though. It’s from burger fans. “We were fortunate enough to have taken first place for Best Burger at the World Food Championships in Las Vegas back in 2012,” say Ron. “It’s the beef,” adds Rob. “It’s on the grill within a day or two of being ground.” And the bacon? “We twice-smoke our bacon in-house every day,” Rob says, “It’s the best bacon I’ve ever had, but it’s not just great beef and bacon. Local buns delivered daily, as well as the produce. And our staff is well aware that they are cooking and serving a world class burger. They take pride in that and they’re good at what they do. It’s those details that make us stand out.” So what’s next for the popular watering hole? “We get requests from customers all the time for another location by their house,” laughs Ron. “We’re always looking to improve and expand,” Rob says. “But it has to be the right avenue. Something our customers already want, and something we’re good at.”

elcoming the patrons of Lucky 13 to its front door is the iconic big red tractor. The tractor embodies the hard work that went into opening this Utah roadhouse. Started in 2009 by three friends, a construction worker and two firefighters, Lucky 13 was a labor of love from the beginning. “We just wanted to open the kind of place that we wanted to go to.” says co-owner Ron Lay, “A place with a relaxed vibe, great food, and good, reasonable drinks that go beyond a Jack & Coke.” That desire came to life in the form of an old building finished with lots of wood and iron, that’s adorned with antique Americana giving Lucky 13 a solid, old-school feel. The menu, featuring award winning burgers, has a varied beer selection to complement the well stocked bar that is highlighted by an impressive whiskey and mezcal showing. Having working firefighters as partners made co-owner Rob Dutton the de facto General Manager from the beginning. Already having some bar managing experience, he left construction work behind for good and made Lucky 13 his home away from home. “I was head-cook, and head bartender as well as manager when we first opened.” says Rob. “It was tough back then, but in the long run it’s paid off. I wrote the job descriptions because I’ve done them all.” That experience from the trenches is especially valuable when spring brings baseball season, and baseball fans. “We’re

SMALL SPACE INNOVATORS It began with a road-beat Airstream and a world rambler with a knack for design and reinvention... Five years later, situated in a 12,000 square foot warehouse based in an industrialized corner of West Valley, Camper Reparadise is an intimate operation fueled by a small team of industry experts. Thanks to an expanding international customer base, the company has accumulated an impressive portfolio of high-end, custom builds. From vending to van conversions, they’ve done it all. Including a complete, luxury interior modernization of a 1977 Airstream Sovereign built for long winters in Wyoming (above and below). hen Joe and Missy Cannella opened Cannella’s Italian eatery in 1978, the Salt Lake City dining scene was vastly different than its current iteration. At that time, places like Sea Cove, The Hawaiian, Mama Eddy’s Beanery, and the original Finn’s lined the streets. Now, 40 years later, Cannella’s stands as one of the city’s most beloved institutions continuing in it’s mission of serving authentic Italian cuisine. Mushroom risotto, spaghetti and meatballs, lasagna, chicken marsala and all other mediterranean favorites line the menu pages along with a black and blue salad that will leave your taste buds hollering delizioso! There’s also an array of delicious sandwiches—some favorites include a house made meatball sandwich, a delectable parmesan sandwich and a reuben. Each option is memorable and worth a trip to Cannella’s to devour each one. The seafood scampi is also a crowd favorite, as is the zucchini rolls for the vegetarians. For the carnivores, there’s a grass-fed Nica Joe burger served as a Monday special with a side salad for just $10.50. At Cannella’s, we use grass fed chicken, beef, local trout and strive to keep things as fresh and local

as possible. One might think that all this makes for the perfect Italian dinning experience until the gelato is rolled out and your eyes roll back in amazement, yes, it’s that good. At Cannella’s there’s truly something for everyone. Joey, the son of the late founder Joe Cannella, has expanded the restaurant and installed its own bar and lounge. The lounge has become one of the friendliest drink spots in town, complete with a killer playlist of tunes that somebody with excellent taste in music put together. While updating the restaurant, Joey Cannella spent a lot of time looking through old black-andwhite family photos. The walls of Cannella’s are now filled with those lovely family photos. He clearly misses his dad, Joe, and so does Missy, his mom. But then, so do many Cannella’s customers, who remember him fondly. The longevity of Cannella’s can also be attributed to the service, which couldn’t be better. It’s that friendly type of service that keeps its patrons coming back for time and time again—for decades, even. At Cannella’s, you truly feel like a member of the family.

alt Lake City is full of great spots for Mexican food, and Taqueria 27 has a place of pride in the lineup. Brought to life six years ago (and still owned and operated) by Kristin and Todd Gardiner, T27 brings a unique culinary spin to the classic taco. Todd infused his street-food-inspired menu with items like Achiote marinated grilled chicken and house-made turkey chorizo. You’ll find some distinctly non-traditional items as well, like the succulent duck confit tacos or the customer favorite the P.B.L.T.A. taco (pork belly, lettuce, tomato & avocado— for first-timers). Salt Laker’s love their tacos, as evidenced by the rapid expansion of Todd and Kristin Gardiner’s stepped-up taco joint. Each Taqueria 27 location has its own daily specials that vary based on seasonal flavors, the freshest fish and the creativity of the chefs. The daily GODs, TODs and FODs—guacamole, taco and fish of the day—are ever changing with the seasons. And don’t forget to sip on the MOD— the margarita of the day. Speaking of sips, the establishment offers a full tequila and mezcal menu along with a great selection of beer and wine. The beautiful hand-drawn chalk walls showcase the tequilas that are available for sipping or mixing in your favorite cocktail. Mezcal, tequila’s bolder sister, also features prominently with options that are not easily found anywhere else in Utah. If beer is more your style, go for a local jalapeño cream ale or a classic corona, both on draft.

Enter the modern and inviting Taqueria 27 and you’ll wish you could sit and dine for more than one meal, especially during patio season. It’s a fun and unpretentious environment great for dining with family or friends. Just a few years ago, there was only one location along the Wasatch Front. Now, you can satisfy your taco cravings in all corners of the valley—there’s the original Foothill spot on the East Bench, the Downtown and Holladay locations as well as the most recent addition nestled in Murray’s Fashion Place Mall. There is also a Lehi location at Traverse Terraces in the works. For those wondering how to go about the ideal tasty experience, start with a made-fresh-just-for-you guacamole, like the guac with diced mango, jicama, Serrano pepper, scallion and a dash of lime. Next, order a round of tacos for the table. Swapping and sharing around the table is encouraged. Spice things up with the T27 house made hot sauces. Then, end the meal with a plate of churros with chocolate dipping sauce. You’ll be back for Saturday or Sunday brunch, guaranteed. T27's take on brunch is laden with options like Oaxacan steak-and-eggs tacos or chilaquiles, paired with a Bloody Maria of course. Remember to grab bottle of your favorite T27 hot sauce or a growler of Jalapeño Cream Ale after eating. T27 offers fresh and unique food, with the highest quality ingredients, local when possible and even heirloom tomatoes from the T27 garden in the summer!

For a quarter of a century, The Gallivan Center has served as the heartbeat of downtown Salt Lake City as the premier urban plaza. The Center, also known as the John W. Gallivan Utah Center, was dedicated to honor Gallivan in 1993. During his extensive career as publisher of The Salt Lake Tribune, Gallivan was dedicated to the growth and maturity of Salt Lake City. He also influenced his good friend, John F. Kennedy, to provide Park City a grant to grow the ski industry in the rustic mining town, which led to a boom in snow sports in Utah. Years after, Gallivan lobbied for decades to the Olympic Committee to accept Salt Lake City as a destination for the Winter Olympics. In recognition of his long struggle to bring the Olympics to Utah, Gallivan carried the Olympic torch on a segment of the run to the opening ceremonies.

Whatever the occasion you find yourself at Gallivan Center, time certainly is out of sight and mind as you explore the offerings of the plaza. In the winter months, the spectacular ice rink and light show gathers flocks of skaters and promenaders. In the warmer months, the Gallivan Center is the home to a number of events, concerts and festivals, such as Craft Lake City, the Utah Blues Festival, and Bluegrass Saturday Night.

Why on earth would I go to First Baptist Church? Baptist? Are you kidding me? I would not be caught dead in a Baptist Church! If these are your sentiments then you would fit right in at First Baptist Church of Salt Lake City. They are not your typical fire and brimstone, turn or burn, condemning, judging, “walk the Romans Road” and “pray the Sinner’s Prayer” kinda Baptists. They are the come-as-you-are, bring the whole family, tree-hugging, gayloving, faith-in-action kinda Baptists. What you will discover when you visit is that they are diverse, friendly, intergenerational, openminded, genuine, and truly happy to have you there, whatever your situation (plus a good cup of coffee). What you won’t find is condemnation, judgement, shame and guilt (Or that Jell-O with vegetables in it. What is that about?) First Baptist Church, part of the American Baptist Churches, USA denomination, is a community that truly tries to welcome everybody. That means that all genders, LGBTQ or straight, young and old are all welcome to fully participate in the life of the church, including in leadership. It means that families of all forms and makeup are nurtured and celebrated. FBC offers all kinds of programs for all ages: Youth and Young Adult Groups, Bible Study, Adult Sunday School with Children’s activities, “Praise Club” for kids, American Baptist Women and a Men’s Group called “Beers with Bros” First Baptist Church doesn’t just stay in their own little bubble but are out in the community trying to do good just for the sake of doing good and contributing positive things to the world. First Baptist is partner with organizations like the Homeless Youth Resource Center, Family Promise, Crossroads Urban Center, Utah Coalition of Religious Communities, The Road Home, and many other worth-while organizations with contributions of not only money, but time as well. First Baptist Church is also committed to social justice and being a voice for those who need to be heard. First Baptist is actively involved in advocating for fair immigration practices, marriage equality, protections for the poor, fair housing, health care and many other issues where their faith values are impacted by the culture around them. If there is a rally for a good cause, you will likely see First Baptist there. If you ask them what they believe it will be hard to answer because First Baptist Church encourages each other to be on their own faith journey and gives each person freedom to articulate that faith in any way that is helpful to them. As a result, they do not have doctrinal statements or creeds that they must all agree to, but live in the tension of bringing all different perspectives together and wrestling with the Bible, their traditions and their own experiences to make sense of the world and God’s activity in it. Of course, the lens they look through to accomplish this is the life and teachings of Jesus, but they leave a lot of room for people to explore what that picture of faith looks like for them.

Give First Baptist a try! You will be surprised how much you enjoy being in a Baptist church. Sunday Services start at 11:00 am | 800 S 1300 E in Salt Lake City | www.firstbaptist-slc.org

Situated in the heart of Springville, Utah with majestic Maple Mountain as its extraordinary backdrop,

THE LEGEND’S COMPOUND is one of Utah’s most amazing treasures. If it were to boast a billboard it might read, “I dreamed a dream”… but who would have dreamed a young teenager and his love of motorcycles would amass into the spectacular, unprecedented Legend’s Motorcycle Museum…a private collection of vintage motorcycles that would rival Harley-Davidson themselves? Built literally, brick by brick with the vision and passion of builder and avid motorcycle enthusiast Rick Salisbury and his wife Vickie.

Salisbury’s personal love of collecting has grown to over 200 vintage motorcycles, mounds of one-of-a-kind memorabilia, a rare trophy collection and original art by world renowned motorcycle-centric Artists’ such as David Uhl, Scott Jacobs, Tom Fritz, and Bronze sculptor Jeff Decker. Legend’s upper viewing gallery houses Salisbury’s crown jewel, a completely unrestored 1907 Harley-Davidson Strap Tank. One of only three1907 Strap Tank’s in existence, Salisbury’s is the only bike that survived with its original paint, engine, frame and tires. Legends’ Motorcycle also boasts an outstanding service department…the crème de le crème of experienced Harley-Davidson technicians who do everything from restoring Old School Knuckle and Pans, to customizing today’s Twin Cam’s & Milwaukee 8’s. Legend’s Motorcycle Museum is adjoined by the charming Side Car Café, which serves a freshly prepared locally sourced menu of all-American fare. Breakfast with local coffee and piping hot waffles is served up all day with a warm friendly smile. Across the Legend’s compound you can also enjoy an amazing meal or a home brewed brew at Strap Tank Brewery, established in 2016. Strap Tank Brewery is definitely a one-of-a-kind…the first brewpub in Utah County since prohibition. Another architectural work of art, Salisbury designed the building, replicating unique architectural elements such as the towering smoke stack from the original Harley-Davidson building in Wisconsin. Strap Tank offers something for everyone, from family friendly dining to home-brewed beer on tap. Strap Tank’s exceptional brews offer something special for the new-to-craft-beer novice or the craft beer enthusiasts. Strap Tanks beers are distinct with layers of unusual and interesting flavors. Sip on a Flathead, Sportster or a Sargent Holtz while you enjoy the amazing surroundings. You don’t want to miss this place…and…if you’re lucky enough while visiting Legend’s Compound, when they aren’t out pickin’, you’ll find Salisbury himself, Vickie and their Rottweiler Frank who are daily patrons.

A Utah Family Business Offering media solutions for your digital, print and event endeavours. The mining community of Copperfield was set in world famous Bingham Canyon, high in the Oquirrh Mountains. In 1906, the Saltas family joined those Copperfield residents in the steep hillside, shanty area, called Greek Camp. Copperfield was home to thousands of melting pot immigrants including Greeks, Japanese, Mexicans, Germans, Swedes, Brits and many other ethnicities all bound to common American values of family, faith, education, hard work and community. They shared many good times, often tempered by the frequent bad times derived of dangerous mining work. Copperfield is now gone, scraped away by mining. But the Copperfield spirit remains alive in everything we do, from newspapers and magazines to events and digital services. We work hard for each other

and for the large communities of readers—online and in print—who value honesty and stories told well. We will keep telling stories—your stories--as long as people keep reading. And wouldn’t it be a shame if they didn’t read? We don’t think that will happen, so meanwhile, turn a page, or many pages, in one of Copperfield Publishing’s growing catalog of Utah (and Jackson Hole, Wyoming) award-winning publications. We bring you the Best of Utah every day, every week, every month, including our newest product, the one you are reading now, We Are Utah. With this issue, discover that behind every great Utahn or super business is a beating heart that is connected in some way to all the rest of us. Their stories are your stories. We are all the community of Utah. Enjoy.  John Saltas Founder

ith more than half of Utah’s population living in less than one percent of the land—Salt Lake and Utah County—there is ample space to get proactive and enjoy the bounties of recreational hot spots. Gorgeous lakes and reservoirs call Utah home, such as Lake Powell, Flaming Gorge, Strawberry Reservoir, Sand Hollow Reservoir, Bear Lake and Utah Lake. Each year, thousands of tourists and local residents flock to these stunning locations to enjoy the 2,727 square miles of the Beehive State that’s covered by water. To fully enjoy these oases in the desert, Marine Products is equipped with the tools and masterful knowledge of water sports and activities. Owner Randy Casper’s interest in boating came at an early age. “I got into the marine business back in 1970. My dad was working for a shop, and he would rig boats. I started coming in on Saturdays and clean the service department so it was ready for the mechanics the next week. I went from a mechanic, to parts manager, to starting the first pro shop in the state in just a few years. The rest became history.” “Boating in Utah is such a family activity. Where else can you have a kid’s attention all day? What are they going to do, jump off and swim ashore? That’s what’s really made boating as a family bond. Me and my dad would always go to Echo up in Coalville, Flaming Gorge to fish, Bear Lake, and we went to Lake Powell before it filled up which was an incredible experience. That’s where my love of the water started.” Thriving in its Salt Lake City location since their doors first swung open in 1971, Marine Products has received the coveted WSIA Dealer of the Year Award three times in the last six years, as well as the 2009 Promotional Dealer of the Year

This badge of honor is given to dealers that excel in customer service, support the water sports industry and are active in educating the community about safe boating, wakeboarding and waterskiing. These accolades humble Randy Casper, who is arguably the person most responsible for the booming water sport industry in Utah. Along with ski sports equipment, Marine Products is fully stocked with the latest and greatest Supra, Moomba and Alumacraft pontoon boats that you can find—well, anywhere. “Marine Products was actually the first pro shop in the country, which dealt with water skis. That’s always been my passion. Back then, you either sold boats or parts, not both. I realized that the niche was to start selling boats and accessories together, and that’s when Marine Products really took off. In 2002, we picked up the Supra and Moomba boats. Today, we’re top 3 in the country in sales of those boats.” With winter finally over and summer being at the tips of our fingertips, now is the time to prepare for a season filled with sunlight and elation on the water. For quality commodities and stellar service for your adventures, look no further than Marine Products.

We really care about our customers. I want to recreate the family feel I felt growing up. This has always been my passion and all I’ve known.

Hello Utah. My name is Tyson Enniss and I’m

a born and bred Utah boy. My family even has a mountain named for them, Enniss Peak in Draper, honoring our pioneer roots. My upbringing ignited a passion within me for our environment and this community as a whole. I love our state and all of the recreation it allows us from skiing the best snow on Earth, to enjoying our wonderful outdoor concerts and many community events and festivals. I didn’t foresee myself staying in the service industry. I was simply in it to pay the bills. I’ve jumped around from restaurants to bars in my 20+ years in the industry. I look back and I thank those that have given me an opportunity to learn. My good friends at Over The Counter and Park Cafe taught me that a business truly is a family. We are all in this together. We’re here for each other. At the old Rivers Effortless Dining and Private Reserve I was close to getting a sommelier certification when the restaurant closed. That certainly would have sent me down a different path. From there, I was recruited to work at the new Lumpy’s Downtown. Though I had the experience,

I showed up for my first day of work not on their records as a new employee, and began working as a bar-back. In this industry, that’s entry level and it took a slamming night for me to jump in and help run the bar to show the owners my true potential as a bartender and eventually a manager. They entrusted me to run Bar Named Sue on Highland Drive when they brought that brand under the company umbrella. And then again when they purchased the old Oscar’s Club in Midvale and expanded the Bar Named Sue brand there. After several years operating the two brands, I was given an opportunity to come on board as a part owner. Running a bar is no easy feat. Owning one, doesn’t make it easier. But, it does give me a chance to give back to this community. That’s why Bar Named Sue supports Wasatch Back Country rescue with an annual fundraiser, we host monthly live art exhibits with local artists showcasing their work, and we support the local music scene weekly with live music on Friday and Saturday nights at both venues. This community gets better the more we support each other. We Are Utah and I Am Utah.

here are very few companies in America that are directly responsible to the growth and rise of an entire city. Real estate agency InterNet Properties is one such company. InterNet Properties’ thriving entrepreneurial spirit has given life to a once insipid downtown Salt Lake City since its doors opened in 1994. Local businesses have found homes along the Main Street spectrum—look inside one of the many shops, companies and restaurants, and you’re more than likely to see more than one business that InterNet Properties helped usher into their establishments. That’s just downtown. Heading the vanguard of InterNet Properties was Vasilios Priskos, who lost his lengthy battle to cancer in October 2017. He was a fry-cook-turned-real-estatemogul, though, of all of his lifelong accomplishments, he was most proud of his sons—Christian, Nico, Alexander and Aristotle. The two eldest of the litter, Christian and Nico, have been brought up in the intricacies of the company. Vasilios lived by the virtues that hard work, patience and humility are the keys to business success. The family atmosphere of the bustling business will ensure that InterNet Properties will achieve new heights as they work with the community in commercial retail, office and industrial brokerage services. Thanks to all of the hardworking agents and support staff that make the company special, they will continue working with the community, the city and the state in offering brokerage services across all asset types. Investing in downtown is about more than making money; it’s more than just buildings. It is part of Vasilios’ legacy that lives on through all of the agents and employees woven within the fabric of InterNet Properties. Downtown’s success has been a part of the vision of InterNet Properties since its inception, and the company is an integral part of the future of Salt Lake City. 
