Words from SRO It is my greatest pleasure to write a few lines to celebrate the 15th anniversary of HSBC Prosperity Hall (Hall 2), one of the very first three Halls built at Phase I, in the Student Residence. Despite of its being the smallest hall (in terms of resident’s population), Hall 2 has successfully cultivated its niche and unique culture with accumulation of experiences and concerted efforts of RMs, RTs /RAs and residents of many generations over the past 15 years. To quote a few examples – the rosy and neatly decorated reading rooms; the very close bonding between RTs and residents that the RTs were the focus of game at Pun-choi Dinner, of course including the RM. In fact at one moment RM Ray’s 15-minute endless trials to set a fallen bottle stand on stage sent chills down my spine. At the last minute, the whole hall exploded into cheers when he finally made it.

Among so many good deeds of Hall 2, one cannot go without touching upon the SPECIAL Hall Night Talk, the brand new initiative launched by Hall 2 with SRO in 2016/17, by inviting the CEOs/Celebrities in town to the Student Residence to share their Keys to Success, condensed in the word of SPECIAL, viz. S – Serve the world P – Passion E – Entrepreneurship C – Coding I – Inovation A – Aspiration L – Life & career

It is encouraging to see the Talk gradually taking root with more and more residents in the Student Residence, other than the steadfast supporters from Hall 2, having realized its intrinsic true value and squeezed time to attend it whenever available. In fact at each Talk, one can see our angle Raisie (Ray’s little princess) busily running around, chirping and giving cookies and drinks to residents. This is one of the many warm episodes Hall 2 residents can feel the presence of RM’s family, and in fact, their devotion and love to Hall 2 are extraordinary to the extent that they are expecting a newborn baby boy Raydon this Spring in Hall 2. Congratulations to Ray and Hall 2 family! To sum up, being a member of the Hall 2 is indeed a privilege and the more one devotes to hall life, the more he/she will gain and grow in this diverse and robust community. Enjoy your life in Hall 2, the Hall which is second to none!

Warmest regards, Wilson Lam Director Student Residence Office

Hall Logo

Purplish red and yellow are the basic color of our hall logo, In the center, the Chinese name of our hall “業昕” is written in ancient Chinese characters, surrounded by “HSBC prosperity hall” and “City University of Hong Kong”. “業” is extracted from CityU moto “敬業樂群”, which means contributing to work and cooperating and appreciating the people around you at the same time. “昕” means the rising sun, indicating vigour and vitality. Together, “業昕” carries a good wish for all its resident to be the pillars of our society, in dignity and honour.

To most of the residents, Student Residence is another home away from their home. To me, it has been my home and even I left the Prosperity Hall for almost 10 years, it was still one of my sweetest home, and lots of wonderful memory. Being the founding Residence Master, I was most fortunate to have the opportunity to work with wonderful teams of Residence Tutors, dedicated Residents Associations and fans of the Hall, from scratch. We wanted to be the best as well as to be unique from other halls. We are the first to have our Hall Song and Hall Emblem. We promote unity while respecting diversity. We foster personal development but also facilitate academic achievement. We have our own spirit and history. Years later, when you return to Prosperity Hall, you can still find your face in the pictures displaying on G/F, trophies received because of your contribution, and jokes you made along the corridors. This is Prosperity Hall, always our home away from home! A home always full of wonderful experiences and memories! Raymond Chan

2007-2016 I am pleased to congratulate HSBC Prosperity Hall on their 15th Anniversary. I had the honour to serve Hall 2 for 8 wonderful years as Residence Master and during that time saw many students achieve many of their goals for study and subsequently obtain well-paid and rewarding jobs in Hong Kong and beyond. Many of those members of the Hall 2 family continue to stay in touch and comment on the value hall life added to their studies. Congratulations to the HSBC Prosperity Hall family past and present on this important milestone of 15 years! Best wishes for the future, Dr Kevin Downing

Traditions and Cultures HSBC Prosperity Hall is not just a place to sleep. Rather, it is our home. A place where we live, we grow, we prosper. Thanks to all enthusiastic predecessors, a firm, yet lively tradition is formed, laying a solid foundation for the younger Prosperians to build on, to enrich and to pass on to the next generations.

The signature banner acts like the guest book signed in a banquet. What makes it different is that it is a huge guest book taking record of exisiting and ex-residents.

Time Tunnel If you want to explore the history of Hall 2, you can travel through this “time tunnel”. 014

The passing of Golden Bowl The Passing of Golden Bowl is a special ceremony in the Inauguration of Residents’ Association, which represents passing the spirit of prosperity and our history from the Ex- Residents’ Association to the new one.

Wishing Board The Chinese name of this wishing board “Ging Guo Ban” literally means passing through a GPA of 3, or even exceed 4. On examination eves, residents will fill the wishing board up with their goals written on red papers Besides, they will also touch the sugar canehung on the board, playing with the homophone in Cantonese ja IRR), which symbolizes they will be able to do well in the exams.

The couplets were originally composed for celebrating 2011’s Chinese New Year. Because of the 10th anniversary establishment of the HSBC Prosperity Hall at 2012, the couplets were re-written. The name of our Hall in Chinese are filled in the first character of both upper and lower couplet. Chinese classics sentences are cited in the couplets. It is hoped that the couplets can remind our residents: - Hard working on academic and future career. Keep reading good books and classics, to think about what the ancient saints said and done, in order to enrich our knowledge and to enhance the moral standard. - Treasure the time, not to waste any second and minute. To have a good knowledge on science and technology for facing the great changes in the modern world.

The annual publication “Prosperians“ became one of our trandition from 2005. Each year, our RT, RA and residents contribute a lot efforts to this magazine. Reading through the pages, you will be able to rewind the old times.

Prosperians Night is an important appointment for both the new and existing residents to come together at beginning of every semester. On that night, residents of the same floor w sit together at a round table which looks like the traditional reunion dinner we have in Lunar Chinese New Year’s Eve. Besides the delicious food, lucky draw and games, the most highlighted event would be the floor-photos taking session at the end, which would become a block of “Time Tunnel”.

We are the first Hall to organise Orientation Camp in the Student Residence community. The orientation camp not only provides a chance for new residents to develop friendship with each other, it also help to strengthen the connection between the new and existing residents in our Hall. Games are specially designed to help students to get adapt to hall life.

Every room will take turn to prepare dessert for the whole floor. Wide varieties, specialty and internationality of our floor desserts are similar to the famous restaurants introduced by the Michelin Guide.

Study

Tour

Over the past few years, Prosperians have travelled to different parts of the world and explored a number of diverse cultural scenic spots and heritage. Being an annual tradition of Hall 2, Prosperians have been looking forward to the study tour every year. Until 2012, Prosperians had already organized study tours to broaden their horizon for eight consecutive years, learning the diverse cultural traditions and aspects of different countries In a historical and modern cultural experience that has enriched Prosperians’ life experience in 2016 our fellow Prosperians have gone on a trip and acquired a chance to exchange social experience with fellow Korean students. They have gained first hand insights on how the city they are visiting are developing ter travelling to their desired destinations. Prosperians will write post trip reflections and even organize cultural nights to share their travelling experience with other residents. Other than the cultural involvements that Prosperians have experienced, some experiences are so unique that it can only

be experienced throughout joining the study tour with other Prosperians. Throughout the whole process of planning and executing their travel plans, Prosperians have learnt how to better prioritize and organize their travel destinations.
