FROM THE PUBLISHER Year Round Thanksgiving For some people, even believers, the Thanksgiving holiday is barely more than a one day big event of gathering, catching up with family, eating, ball game watching and giving thanks. In some cases, the “giving thanks” is done simply because it is expected at the Thanksgiving table. As you and your family begin preparing for Thanksgiving Day later this month, consciously decide to have a day of thanks every day. Giving thanks to God is taught throughout the Bible. As God’s people, each and every day of our lives should be a day of thanksgiving to God. Here are just a few of themany Scriptures that reference giving thanks to the Lord. Think of your favorite verses regarding thanksgiving. “Enter into His gates with thanksgiving, And into His courts with praise. Be thankful to Him, and bless His name.” Psalm 100:4 “And when you offer a sacrifice of thanksgiving to the LORD, offer it of your own free will.” Leviticus 22:29 “Oh, give thanks to the LORD, for He is good! For His mercy endures forever.” 1 Chronicles 16:34 “We give thanks to You, O God, we give thanks! For Your wondrous works declare that Your name is near.” Psalms 75:1 * November is also the month that our country honors the men and women who have served our country in the armed services. Either on Veterans Day or sometime this month, spend quality time with a Veteran and thank them for service to our nation which has preserved our freedom over many years and many wars.

Living By Faith I couldn’t drive anywhere because my insurance had been cancelled. I needed help getting my kids to the orthodontist, home after school, and to church. Even if I’d had insurance, the gas tank was just as empty as the fridge. Was this living by faith? Was I being irresponsible, lazy, or foolish? My life certainly didn’t line up with the “American Dream” or the “Abundant Life.” I had chosen to obey God and do volunteer ministry full time. As a single mom of three boys. With only $500 a month. While living in Franklin, TN. Having been born in the jungles of Peru to missionary parents, I knew what living by faith looked like in foreign missions. You had to trust God for your survival and safety in addition to your ministry. That made sense. As an entrepreneur, I knew what living by faith looked like when it meant to depend on God to bring work, clients, and payments. Praying daily for God to send us the work. Having a good business plan and budget, we were focused on being the best stewards of the wealth God blessed us with. We tithed. We helped the poor. We definitely lived by faith when it looked like the “American Dream.” Then the economy tanked. I had to find a job to support my family. I learned living by faith looked like asking God to open doors for jobs, favor in getting promoted from an entry level position to management, recruitment to better opportunities, and building a reputation for helping businesses grow quickly. When I became a single mom, living by faith took another turn. I had to trust God to provide strength, wisdom, and energy at completely new levels. He provided with the highest pay and best benefits I’d ever had. Living by faith still looked successful. Until God asked me to permanently destroy my employability by becoming a whistle-blower. I learned living by faith looked like trusting God for my safety, my reputation, my future. God took care of us in miraculous ways. He provided another full-time, entry-level job, small apartment, junker car, and enough part-time gigs to make a tight budget work. Eventually, God moved us to Franklin, away from our support systems and asked me to live by faith in a whole new way. After using up all the savings by nvesting everything in a mission to help hurting women, God said to obey Him on this mission by trusting Him to provide our every need. God provided that insurance and transportation I needed. He put food in the fridge and gas in the gas tank. I learned to see God as my provider, no matter what! My decisions had to be made in obedience to God, regardless of the financial implications. As Paul did in the Bible, I also found contentment in whatever state, whatever condition, whatever reputation, because I am always living by faith! — Paula Mosher Wallace, President of Bloom In The Dark, Inc. www.bloominthedark.org

With the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) season in full swing, I get many questions regarding whether on not to file for financial aid. Many families wrongly believe that their income is too high to qualify for financial aid. With college tuition being so expensive, even high income families can get financial aid offers. A greater portion of institutional grants are now going to higher income families and subsidized loans offer attractive terms. Everyone should fill out the FASFA, so here are some tips: 1. Do it early. Many schools operate on a first-come, first-serve basis. Deadlines vary by school and state aid dollar are usually the first to go. 2. Do it online. Because of the FASFA’s complexity, it is common to make errors. Online applications alert you to incorrect or missing information versus the paper forms which would have to be returned for corrections. 3. Do not include exempt assets. The FASFA exempts many assets that families wrongly include. Retirement plans and home equity are exempt assets and should not be included in net worth information on the FASFA. 4. Keep all records. As with all important documents, keep a copy of the completed forms. You may need it for the following year’s filings and you may be one of the lucky ones selected for verification. Essentially verification is an audit that affects nearly 1/3 of all applicants. 5. Read all questions carefully. The worlds “you” and “your” refer to the student, not the parent. Also, do not leave any sections blank. Enter “0” or “N/A” 6. Do not send a letter of explanation with the FASFA. The letters are best sent to individual schools and will have no bearing on the FASFA results. Once an award is given by a particular college, then make their financial aid officers aware of any unusual circumstances such as job loss or reduced income. 7. Don’t discount expensive schools. Schools with large endowments are often able to meet a high percentage of need. This may allow expensive schools to become more affordable for many families. 8. Reconsider early decision. By applying for early decision, your student is in a reduced bargaining position for financial aid. 9. Ask for a review. Avoid words like “bargain” or “negotiate”. Financial aid officers do not like having competing award letters waived in their faces. Instead, thank the school for their generosity and then express doubt at your ability to meet your expected family contribution. 10. If outside scholarships come in, ask that loans be reduced first. Some schools reduce the grant portion of the financial aid package rather than the loan portion when taking into account outside scholarships, such as Rotary Club. Start thinking about your family’s financial aid position as early as the spring semester of the student’s sophomore year in high school. With the move up date of the FASFA to October, January of the sophomore year is when parent and student income starts counting for financial aid forms. It also gives parents time to think about their assets as it relates to financial aid. — Heather Hale, CFP and owner of Peak College Planning specializes in helping families understand all that goes into financial aid and paying for college. 4 Tips for a Lifetime of STRONGER BONES I know you’re inundated with health messages like what to eat for your heart, how to lose weight, which foods are good for your brain—not to mention all the advice about what to give (or not to give) your kids. It’s exhausting! So, it’s no surprise that bone health is easily overlooked. After all, you don’t have to worry about your bones until you’re older, right? Well, not quite... While osteoporosis (weakened bones) is most common in older people, there are things you can do at any age to help protect your bones in the present and for the future. To save you time on research, I’ve compiled a short list. But first, a little background on our bones. Our bones are pretty amazing. They protect vital organs, give muscles something to latch onto and, of course, provide structure. Can you imagine what our bodies would look like without them? You may have heard that you develop bones during adolescence and thought, “That time has long passed, so there’s nothing I can do now.” It’s true that most of us reach our highest bone mass by 30 years old, and then we begin breaking down more bone than we build. If you’re not 30 yet, it’s even more valuable for you to be mindful of bone health because you still have the opportunity to actually increase your bone mass! However, our bones never stop changing. Therefore, we can all do simple things now that allow our bones to be stronger and avoid future breakdown. Here are four ways to be good to your bones: 1. Eat calcium. This could be single-handedly the most important component to bone health. If we don’t consume enough calcium, our body can pull calcium out of our bones to be used elsewhere in the body. Luckily, it’s easy to prevent. Consistently consume calcium-rich foods so your body is getting

what it needs from dietary sources. Some foods that are rich in calcium are dairy products, fortified juices, broccoli, soy products and almonds. 2. Exercise. Being physically active can decrease your risk for osteoporosis. Bonus points if you include weight-bearing exercises, which make bones stronger. Look for great strength training classes at the Y or other fitness centers. 3. Stop smoking and limit alcohol. A smoke-free lifestyle makes for better health across the board! And excessive alcohol can interfere with your calcium intake, among other negative effects. 4. Choose Vitamin D. Vitamin D is often forgotten, but it is quite important. It is needed to absorb the calcium we consume. Vitamin D is found in egg yolks, fortified milk and juices, salmon and tuna. Sunlight also produces vitamin D, but many factors can affect production such as geographical location, sunscreen usage, and skin color. Be good to your bones now, and your body will thank you later! — Allison Loomis, YMCA of Middle Tennessee, ymcamidtn.org

I heard an expression the other day from a client’s daughter… ” SHOCK and AWE” …whenever I tell folks like you and me about the best kept secret in the military. Title #38, better known as the AID & ATTENDENT NON-SERVICE CONNECTION BENEFIT that reimburses veterans & surviving spouses when they start paying for long term care services in the home, assisted living and even in the nursing home. 1. Did you know about this benefit? Don’t feel bad, as very few did. 2. Did you know it has been available since 1952 but Tennessee didn’t get the first nickel until 1986? Why, you ask? Nobody knew that it existed! 3. How do you qualify? Must have served at least 90 days of Active Duty of which at least one day was during one of the qualified war periods. Your doctor must state that you are in need for at least 2 of the 5 personal services at least three days a week. The list of 5 are assistances in bathing, dressing, mobility, transference, toileting and prescription mgt. (Rx mgt only if for a physical or mental reason) What am I talking about, you ask? I am talking about getting benefits for your loved ones that 90% of the population doesn’t know exist and 70% of those over the age of 65 qualify for. The benefit known as Title 38 of the Veterans Administration commonly referred to as Aid & Attendance that provides up to $21,531.00 for a single veteran, $25,525.00 for a married veteran and even $13.836.00 for the surviving spouse of a veteran. You can receive this amount annually for the rest of your lives as long as you continue to pay for some form of Long Term Care. It may not be the Lottery, but I assure you, it seems like it to a lot of families we’ve helped over the past 15 years and sure comes in handy when it comes time to making our income & assets last longer as defined by the level of care many of us over the age of 65 will face one day. Some of you were told about this benefit at one time or another but were told you would not qualify due to making too much income or having to many assets. My grandfather had a saying to that… HOGWASH! If you work through a true professional that will work for you AT NO COST as your Advocate, since it is against the law to charge a veteran and his family any fees at all, (and this includes all attorneys), you would know that these excuses are incorrect. Take time to find out what your options really are and to what steps you need to take so you will know WHAT to do…How to do it and most importantly… THEN DO IT! — Ben Davis & Mike Verble with Verble Estate Preservation, VA Advocate Volunteers Ben@verbleseniorsolutions.com Mike@verbleseniorsolutions.com 615-373-2733

Kids and Cards Creating Credit-Capable Students As parents, we know there will come a day when our children reach that magical age we have all anticipated, yet we do not want to believe it could actually arrive . . . the day personalized credit card offers, emblazoned with our children’s names, begin showing up in our mailbox. Whether our children are mature enough to handle them or not, these enticing offers are one of the sureties of life. However, by the time they receive this bait to borrow, they will probably make wiser decisions if they have a foundation of financial understanding, which, of course, comes from you. Credit, when credit is due So, how can we prepare our kids to be responsible, card-carrying members of society by using credit as a convenience and not a crutch? Tim Chen, CEO of NerdWallet, offered some excellent insights from the archives of U.S. News and World Report. First, it’s a good idea to make sure you’ve covered the financial basics with your younger kids, well before anyone is offering them credit. This includes demonstrating basic budgeting – first by showing them yours and then by helping them create one of their own. As kids are learning about the power of money, it’s often easier for them to comprehend the concept using cash. Providing a small allowance for their work around the house can help reinforce the value of money, and how a plastic card represents that hard-earned cash. This can then lead to setting up a checking and savings account, complete with a debit card and daily limits. Teach your kids to be a credit masters by instilling these best practices that help align their finances with their faith: • Only charge as much to your credit cards as you can afford to pay off by the end of the month. • If you’re unable to pay off your credit card balances at the end of the month, pay more than the minimum payment required. • If you do maintain balances on your credit cards, strive to keep your credit utilization ratio at 30 percent or less. • Use your credit cards on a regular basis, again with the goal of paying off the balance at the end of each month. This provides you with a proven history of being able to handle credit responsibly. • Avoid late payments, ATM cash advances and convenience checks. All of these come with fees that can and should be easy to avoid with proper planning. Source: Credit InfoCenter, “Top 5 Credit Card Best Practices”

When your child is finally ready for their first bank account and debit card, you’ve got help waiting for you. ECCU offers an age-appropriate savings and checking account to help teach the foundations of financial responsibility and empower your kids to be good stewards of their finances. You can get more tips and information at eccu.org. — Linda Carlson

Do you need help writing a book and getting it published?

November is National Adoption Awareness month and this topic is particularly close to my heart because my son is adopted. My husband and I have always had adoption as a part of the plan for our life and after struggling with infertility, we felt a natural move towards adoption. Our story is crazy because we found out we were chosen to be our sons parents on a Tuesday and brought him home that Saturday. It was a whirlwind and I would not trade a minute of it.

Lindsey Castleman and family

In walking through the adoption process, we learned a lot. Something that was fascinating to us was the terminology and ways to talk about adop-

tion. Wanted to share some that we experienced: 1) When talking about a birth mom, use the phrase “She placed her son/ daughter for adoption” or “She created an adoption plan for her son/daughter”. People commonly like to say, “she gave up her son/daughter,” and that sounds as though she did not care or want him/her and that could not be further from the truth. 2) If someone adopted a child and already had birth children, stay away from using the word “real” or “your own.” All children are the family’s ‘real’ and ‘own’ children. Instead use ‘birth’ children or ‘adopted’ children. Truly, it is best to only use these phrases if you must. Ideally, we would just say ‘children’ and lump everyone all together, because they are all the same in the parent’s eyes. 3) In referring to the adopted child’s parents, use the phrase “birth mom” or ‘birth parents” instead of “natural mom” or “real parents.” There is nothing unnatural about adoption or unreal about adoption, so using the words natural and real can put that message out there. 4) Asking “how much did the adoption cost?” If you are considering adoption, please feel free to ask privately, but if you are not—just don’t ask. Especially if the child is within ear-shot. We do not ever want for our children to think that they were bought and sold like something in a store. Plus, their life is invaluable and we could never put a number on how much they are worth to us. 5) Please do not vilify the birth parents. It is true, they might have made poor choices that led them to need to create an adoption plan. However, when you get to know their story and anyone else’s story, you will start to see and understand how and why they are in the situation they are in. They are no more or less valuable than you or me and they should be esteemed for choosing a beautiful plan for their little one.

t h e h om e F roNt Save Energy in Your Home this Fall Fall weather in Tennessee brings some of the brightest, crisp days followed by below freezing temperatures when the sun goes down. If you have high utility bills, or hot and cold spots around door and windows or throughout your home, these tips can help lower your energy bills and make your home more comfortable. Check your doors and windows. Take a good look at your windows. If you see wood rot, condensation, cracked caulking and other issues, you could be throwing energy dollars out the window. Next, take a fresh look at your doors. If you see light through the cracks, that’s more wasted energy. Is it drafty by those windows and doors? That’s not good either. Simply put, when enough windows and doors have cracks, crevices and other issues, your house is basically missing a wall. Schedule a professional inspection for your HVAC unit. Your HVAC system plays an essential role in keeping your home, and your family, happy – year-round. Since the system takes care of you, it’s important to take care of it. Some warning signs that it may be time to have your HVAC repaired or replaced include high utility bills, you’re

hot in some rooms but cold in others, or even that you could dust your furniture every day. Being proactive by maintaining your HVAC system on a regular, annual basis can save you headaches and unexpected expenses. Don’t be left in the dark. Fall and winter storms can knock the power off – or create dangerous power surges. A surge protector, or surge suppressor, is designed to help protect electrical systems, electronics and appliances from power fluctuations. Whole home generators can keep the lights on and the refrigerator running even when the electrical system gets zapped. They’re especially useful if you use critical healthcare equipment at home or run a business out of your home. Research a tankless water heater. When you want to save money on utility bills, it’s natural to think about heating or electricity. You could turn the heat down, buy a programmable thermostat, use timers, turn lights off when you’re not using them. Those are all great ideas, but have you considered updating your water heater? Tankless water heaters with recirculation deliver valuable energy savings, typically providing 96% efficiency, compared to the 62% efficiency rating of a stand-

ard water heater. By proactively replacing the water heater, you’ll have time to do research and find the option that works best for your budget while avoiding expensive damage and frustration caused when a water heater bursts. How can we help? For more than 70 years, Lee Company has been helping customers make their homes more comfortable and energy efficient, the first step toward lower utility bills. Our energy services specialists will come out and look at everything that affects the energy in your home, from appliances and HVAC systems to insulation, windows and doors. After assessing your unique situation, we’ll suggest how to save the most on your utility bills. — Dan Kalman, Senior Vice President of Home Services, Lee Company, www.leecompany.com

I, my family and everyone here at Hyundai of Cool Springs urge you to join us in sending thoughts and prayers to any and all who are need of support. The holidays are meant to be enjoyed with family, loved ones, friends and neighbors but an unprepared vehicle can put a serious dent in your plans. It’s a very special time of the year to be sure but there’s also a lot going on and sometimes things like automotive care can get put on the back burner. However, the last thing you want is to get sidelined due to a breakdown because you didn’t take care of something as easy and simple as an oil change or tire rotation. Of course, who knows what kind of weather Old Man Winter will bring us this year so it’s also a good idea to get all those fluids checked and take the necessary precautions as the weather has become a mite unpredictable these days. Take a lesson from Benjamin Franklin who said that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Then take another one from your buddy, Frank. A little time in our service department could save you a lot of time on the side of the road. Of course, if that does happen we’ve got you covered with our roadside assistance but we’d rather see you celebrating the holidays with your friends and family. So before you go visit them, come visit us. — Festive Frank Odrobina, Owner of Hyundai and Genesis of Cool Springs

CHAMPION CHANGE MAKERS

Photos by Daniel C. White

An Agency Making a Difference

From the moment you walk in the door at 5by5 you’re immediately struck with the sense that something’s different. Amidst bright contemporary furniture and massive photomurals that flood the space with pops of color, a sense of serenity permeates the room. Sure, there’s that familiar buzz so often found in marketing agencies—the bustle of creative minds cranking out brand strategy—but a certain chaos is missing. Why? Because 5by5 is committed to one principle: Two Things Matter – God and People Grounded on this edict, 5by5 has successfully carved out a niche in the often-cutthroat marketing arena. They aim to amplify people who are changing the world. With this mission at the helm they see no need for chaos. Three years ago, Shannon Litton (President/Chief Executive Officer), Mike Schatz (Chief Operating Officer) and Josh Miller (Chief Creative Officer) left their lucrative careers to start an agency geared specifically toward organizations and individuals who exist to make a difference. Now, their client roster spans international and local nonprofits and ministry organizations, global healthcare, sports, entertainment, and personal brands. In Nashville alone, their Change Making client base is impressive. They strategize brand solutions for companies such as The Tennessee Titans,

16

World Vision, Lifeway, Trevecca Nazarene University and United Methodist Publishing. They help broaden impact for entertainers like Matthew West, the Katinas, Scott Hamilton and more. They strategize to ensure nonprofits like Mocha Club, Precept Ministries, Hope Smiles and Food for the Hungry remain relevant for local donors and other supporters. And while the pace of life in the office is often full speed, 5by5 employees will tell you the work they do is what gets them going in the morning. “We have the best jobs in the world,” said Litton. “God has put a specific call or mission in people’s hearts and we get to come alongside and help give a voice to this calling.” Schatz echoes, “My faith and work now connect in a way they never have in the past. Our clients are influencers and I get to use my gifts to elevate their cause.” Miller, the agency’s digital guru, shared a unique story of his journey to 5by5: “Four years ago I was deeply entrenched in a successful Nashville agency. One night my 3-year-old daughter climbed in my lap and asked, ‘Daddy, what did you do at work today?’ I struggled to answer. We did great work for great people, but the work I was doing wasn’t going to interest or impact her. In that moment, I started to wonder if there could be more. In four months we had launched 5by5.”

www.ChristianFamilyNashville.com

One of their first clients was Amazima Ministries, a mission with Brentwood, Tenn. ties. Founded in 2008 by 20-year-old Katie Davis, Amazima mentors, educates and feeds the people of Uganda. “Our first project was working with Amazima on a new logo and website,” said Miller. “My days were filled with hearing stories of Davis’ courage and her journey to adopt 13 Ugandan girls; starting a nonprofit from nothing. When I went home one night after work my little girl climbed in my lap and asked me that same question. I shared Davis’ story and the impact of God’s hand in her life. I knew in that moment that 5by5 was where I needed to be.” How They Tick… 5by5 artists, designers, strategists, and storytellers adhere to two principals: Clarity and Reach. These are the cornerstones of their work ethic and the meaning behind their corporate logo. 5by5 is an old military term that indicates a signal is strong and clear. Schatz explains, “Businesses need to know their audience and go after them with clarity. People are bombarded with 3,000-6,000 messages a day and our clients don’t realize how strategically loud they need to be to set themselves apart. That’s where we come in. Our marketing team helps clients rise above the clutter.” “My advice to clients is to engage people you trust, tell your story, and stay consistent,” says Miller. “Organizations do so many different things it can tend to overwhelm the message. Focus on the ‘why’ of your mission. Understand who you are and be clear in communicating it.” Litton adds, “Many of our clients are nonprofits running on limited budgets and donor dollars. This creates for us a deep sense of responsibility. We can’t afford to take a brand backward or fail in our efforts because every dollar matters.” Litton has amassed a team of more than 25 professionals who are adept at organizational and brand strategy, digital marketing and engagement. They demystify marketing by employing research, analytics, web design, media, and collateral to alter brand behavior and reach around the globe. Litton believes the challenge in life and business is to know what is important and never waiver. “If you spend time with any of our agency team members, you get a profound sense that they have all adopted this practice.” Knowing the “why” is key—so important to Litton that she recently incorporated this concept in an employee teambuilding event. She loaded her crew onto a tour bus for a three-day “why” tour. They visited clients from Nashville to Asheville and beyond, hearing personal stories from the folks they serve. They spent a half-day at the Nashville Rescue Mission meeting residents and then traveled to South Carolina to hear the personal testimony

of an entrepreneurial sports client. They unpacked the “why” of their clients, which in turn reinforced the “why” of their work. “If you’re not taking care of your people, you’re missing something,” said Litton, “The world has created a 24-hour, 7-day all-access work week and it’s detrimental to our work, our families and our lives. People have to unplug.” Litton so strongly believes in balance that she’s implemented a sundown-to-sundown policy. Every 5by5 employee takes 24 hours to completely unplug from work. Starting from sundown Saturday to sundown Sunday, work is set aside…no emails, text or business phone calls allowed. Schatz explains, “You can end up with a good product, but if the process is painful, what’s the point? People need balance.” Furthermore, it is apparent that this corporate philosophy works. The Nashville Business Journal recently honored 5by5 as one of Nashville’s Best Places to Work. Intentionally Focused… 5by5’s unique corporate culture and client success is not accidental. It’s intentional. Each of the agency’s principals believes in connection, council, and collaboration. They attend to a double bottom line wherein revenue is not the singular focus. Impact shares that space. To Litton, Schatz, and Miller, amplifying mission and people are key goals on every project. “We want to give our clients the spotlight so they can give more to the world,” says Schatz.

5by5 clients are deeply altruistic and at just a glance it’s evident 5by5 employees adhere to the same philosophy. — Susan Reinfeldt is founder and owner of e Write Word, a marketing com- munications/event planning company located in Franklin, Tenn.

So, you want to write a book and get it published? Here are five things to think about before you dive into the deep end of the pool: 1. Ask yourself: “How passionate am I about the topic I am writing on, and how well informed on it am I?” Are you an expert? Writing a book is a long, tedious, and often frustrating process. You’d better be in it for the long haul, and you’d better know what you are writing about. There will be bumps and bruises along the way (figuratively speaking), and this is an endurance event. Knowing this upfront will help prep you. 2. Make an outline. Take your time and do it right; this will be your road map to the finish line. You need to have some way of knowing how (and where) you want to start and where you want to go once you finish that first chapter, then the second, and so on. You can always tweak the outline as you proceed. Writing a book without an outline is like driving from here to Timbuktu without GPS, a road map, or directions from a friend – have fun with that! 3. As hard as you work and wrack your noggin while writing (and researching, presumably), you need to know that once you have written your 75,000 or so words, your work is only half done. Then comes the heavy lifting with getting your book edited, laid out, cover designed, printed, marketed, sold, shipped, etc. That’s if you’re self-publishing. It’s not much easier if you pursue a traditional publisher (as opposed to a vanity house). You will need a book proposal (this takes work and a lot more head scratching),

then you need to find a literary agent, then the waiting game begins. 4. You want to know if your book will sell, and you start asking that question before you’ve even written a chapter. Ehhhhhhhhhhhhh. The truthful answer is another question: Who the heck knows? Ask yourself this: why will potential buyers of your book, to whom you are a stranger, feel compelled to pick up your book and fork out 25 bucks for it? There’s never a bad time to start working on your sales pitch, otherwise known as an elevator pitch (selling your book to a stranger in 30 seconds or less). Keep that pitch in mind as you write. Work it, practice it, polish it, believe in it. Note: positive feedback from a loved one or family member is close to meaningless. 5. If you need help writing your book, hire a ghostwriter. If you can rough out a manuscript pretty well, but you know it needs work, hire a developmental editor. If you know you can write well and produce a well-organized manuscript, you will still need a copy editor, at minimum. Know these professional designations when you go looking for editing help. Make sure it’s someone familiar with Chicago Manual of Style. Giving it to your cousin or BFF who aced high school English won’t cut it. — Mike Towle, a Middle Tennessee resident, is the published author or ghostwriter of more than 25 books and founder of Win-Win Words LLC, through which he offers writing, editing, consulting and other book-publishing services. m i S S ioN m ake r S CRIME. ABANDONMENT. IMMORALITY. ABUSE. DRUGS. ADDICTION. GREED. ADVERSITY. SLAVERY.

Your home is invaluable. So is our home maintenance.

What do these have in common? They exist in every community fueling human trafficking! FACTS: Human trafficking occurs in ALL 50 states. Apx., every 2 mins, a CHILD is bought or sold for sex and the average age of a child victim is 13. Human Trafficking is the second-fastest growing criminal industry. In TN, 750 children run away every month. 1/6 will be coerced into sex trafficking. TN ranks among the best in the nation for its combative approach. YET, we are 19th in the country with 80 cases in 2016. SOLUTION: Partnership The Governor’s Human Trafficking Task Force now known as the Tennessee Human Sex Trafficking Advisory Council was established by the Governor to develop and implement a statewide plan for the prevention of human trafficking. This year, in Middle TN, the Council consisting of the Department of Children’s Services, the Administrative Office of the Courts, the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI), the Sheriff ’s Association, the Public Defender’s Conference and the only Mid-TN nonprofit representative, End Slavery, have reached out to other integral nonprofits to develop and implement plans to identify and deter human trafficking, deliver services and quality aftercare and recovery to survivors, routinely gather to exchange information, encourage frontline efforts, share lessons learned, and enhance engagement for lasting impact pressing toward Freedom. The TBI “is committed to understanding and fighting Human Trafficking, from law enforcement to nonprofits to government agencies -- have stepped up to play a part in the solution.” In fact, during our September NGO Human Trafficking Working Group meeting, TBI’s Special Agent Wilkerson said, “Over the last two years, it is the little ol’ church outreach lady who sees something “just not right” and calls us to report that “something” that has made the difference for us. We, as Law Enforcement need you all in the community identifying and reporting these bad people. That way we can do bad things to these bad people. And you all [nonprofits] take care of the victims and survivors” This is true partnership where we (Rescue 1 and other nonprofits) collaborate, share information and resources, combat these “bad people” on a collective and unified front and provide advocacy and quality aftercare and recovery for survivors. REALITIES: Thursday, October 19, 2017, the Rescue 1 team and volunteers were in preparation for our annual Fundraising Gala. At 2:30PM, our Restoration Team started receiving calls for placement availability for teen girls. In less than 3 hours we received 4 calls from 2 different states including TN. Friday October 27, 2017, the FBI called, again inquiring for placement of 2 other teen girls. They were from MY HOME TOWN; WHERE I WAS BORN! In 8 days, we received calls for 6 teen girls , 2 of which have children as a result of their abuse and captivity. HOW YOU DOIN’, NOW? How do you process or respond to this information? What can you do? Join Rescue 1 Global, whose action is directed into Prevention, Rescue and Restoration. YOUR PARTICIPATION to end human trafficking is so valuable. So we encourage you to focus YOUR ACTION in four key ways: GIVE. TELL. GO. IMMERSE.

Nothing Is Too Small

God’s Compass BIBLE TRUTH God will always lead you in the right direction. WHAT THE BIBLE SAYS Psalm 32:8 New International Version (NIV) 8 I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my loving eye on you. HANDS-ON EXPERIMENT

Reversing Arrow INGREDIENTS • Transparent Glass • Black Permanent Marker • Piece of Paper • Water INSTRUCTIONS STEP 1: Fill the transparent glass with water. STEP 2: Using the black permanent marker, draw a horizontal arrow on the piece of paper. STEP 3: Place the piece of paper, with the horizontal arrow, behind the transparent glass, filled with water. Make sure the paper is touching the transparent glass of water and observe the horizontal arrow. STEP 4: Move the piece of paper, with the horizontal arrow, away from the transparent glass of water and observe the horizontal arrow. What are the effects of placing the piece of paper, with the horizontal arrow behind the transparent glass of water? EXPLANATION As you move the piece of paper, with the horizontal arrow, away from the transparent glass of water, the arrow appears to reverse. The light is refracted as it passes through the transparent glass, the water, then through the back of the transparent glass, and finally through the air to the paper with the horizontal arrow. This refraction causes the horizontal arrow to appear as if it is reversed. BIBLE CONNECTION Just as the arrow reverses as you move the piece of paper with the horizontal arrow away from the transparent glass, when you are headed in the wrong direction, God will always lead you in the right direction. If you allow God to lead you, you’ll never head in the wrong direction, and you’ll discover, He is better than any compass.

It was a normal busy day. My kids were little and we were going . . . somewhere. I buckled Christopher into the car seat, ran back in the house to grab my purse, gather stuff, and hurry Marilyn along. I opened my purse to get the car keys. Not there. I rushed into the kitchen to look on the counter. Not there. Were they on the dresser in the bedroom? Not there. I looked in the bathroom, the closet, and again in the living room. Now I was really frustrated! Before I became frantic I yelled, “LORD JESUS! WHERE ARE MY KEYS?” Then I stopped, closed my eyes, and waited. It took a few seconds, but into my mind came the picture of my jacket lying over a chair in my daughter’s room—right where I’d left it yesterday—with my keys in the pocket. “Thank You!” I grabbed those keys and we were on our way. (The Holy Spirit is brilliant!) A few days later we were headed out again and I instructed Marilyn to find her shoes. Soon I heard her three-year old voice loudly say, “LORD JESUS! WHERE ARE MY SHOES?” Hummmm – was she listening? Are you convinced God cares about your life? Your answer is likely yes. But I actually mean your whole life—the daily stuff, the everyday cleaning, shopping, cooking, working, eating, drinking, dressing, playing, walking around, have-to-get-it-done life. Have you embraced the idea that God wants to live all of that life with you and give you joy in this journey? Just in case you have listened to the lie that God is somehow too busy to be bothered with the little things, let me remind you how much He cares. He knows exactly how many hairs are on our heads (see Luke 12:7; Matthew 10:30). He even knows a word before we speak it (Psalm 139:4). Those things may seem little to us, and we know with babies, toddlers, and preschoolers, life is full of little stuff. All the “little stuff ” matters to our children, and it all matters to God. “So, here’s what I want you to do, God helping you: Take your everyday, ordinary life—your sleeping, eating, going-to-work, and walking-around life—and place it before God as an offering. Embracing what God does for you is the best thing you can do for him. Don’t become so well-adjusted to your culture that you fit into it without even thinking. Instead, fix your attention on God. You’ll be changed from the inside out. Readily recognize what he wants from you, and quickly respond to it. Unlike the culture around you, always dragging you down to its level of immaturity, God brings the best out of you, develops wellformed maturity in you. “ ROMANS 12:1–2 (MESSAGE translation) As Miss PattyCake, I sing a song called “Little Me” which says, Little me, little me Jesus loves little me. My head, my feet, my smile so sweet, Jesus loves little me. Listen to it here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=dJoRLR9rG8o Or on Spotify. ITUNES, and on the “Birthday Party Surprise” video at www.misspattycake.com — Jean Thomason, author/speaker/singer/songwriter/worship leader and the live embodiment of “Miss PattyCake”. She has won hearts of hundreds of thousands of toddlers and preschoolers through DVDs, CDs, books, and high-energy live performances. Her new book, “Sharing God’s BIG LOVE with Little Lives” is available where books are sold.

DEEPER FAITH. GREATER ADVENTURES. November 2017

t eachable m om e NtS Even though the doctrine of “positive confession” has been twisted by some, it is still Biblical. “Unto us a Son is given.” (Isai. 9:6) “Thanks be to God for His unspeakable gift!” (II Cor. 9:15) It would be very easy to compile a list of things to give God thanks for right now. Almost all of us are working; Tennessee unemployment is at 3%. God has been providing, week to week, month to month. Yet today I can easily get grumpy and unthankful with just a simple mood swing or unkind comment from a Facebook “friend”. We want to be a thankful, grateful people. We want those we live with to be the same. So, how can we catch such a strong dose of the “Thanks-Living” bug that it sticks with us through the new year? Thankfulness is more than good manners, saying “Please and Thank You” at the table and at the restaurant. It is produced by a true miracle of God’s Spirit within, made to grow through and conquer our self-centeredness--a result of God’s working in us. We would never be thankful without His help. Rom. 1:18-22 tells us who we are without Him: a people who are not thankful. 1) Make sure you are dealing with the regenerated heart as you teach this virtue. The soul that understands what Christ did for them, and in them, has a great headstart!! 2) List ways to thank those around you, and then say it. Say it with cards, words, e-mails, hugs, and more. One study has concluded that the average American hears 8 negative things at home for every 1 positive thing. The conversation going on at this moment begins with me, not someone else.

3) Giving freely will break ingratitude quickly. We have reason to be thankful, after all, because God (and others) gave to us. Don’t dam up the giving process. For example, one year we bought four or five pies and knocked on the neighbors’ doors to present them. Chicago, where we lived for 25 years, is not a very friendly city. I think we made some neighbors faint when they saw us. Do something like that, and take the kids along. I know one couple that takes their kids to McDonald’s at dinner time and pays the bill for the person behind them at the drive-thru, no matter what the amount. The cashier gets to tell some shocked customer that a total stranger just paid for their dinner. There are 1000 ways you can do this! Finally, expose your loved ones to those less fortunate. Does your church support a missionary? What could they use right now? Earthquakes, hurricanes and brushfires just hit: it should not take long to find a way to help. David Wilkerson was just sitting with the daily paper and looking at an article about a problem in New York City, and he asked himself, “Is there a ministry working there that we can help in some way so we can DO something about this?” All the worldwide Teen Challenge rehab centers were birthed from that simple impulse, that move to practice “thanksliving.” Don’t just sit there. Do something! You can still make this year count for something tremendous. — Pastor Mark Simpson

Intermittent Fasting (IF) A Definite Reason I am sure many of you have heard of Intermittent Fasting before and have had questions like: “Isn’t that just some extreme diet plan?” or “Is that just starving yourself to lose weight?”. In this article, I am going to talk about what exactly Intermittent Fasting is and how it could be a helpful tool for you.

So, what is it? First of all, it is not a diet plan. It’s not even primarily about what you eat. Before I go any further, let me say this…What you fuel your body with is of the utmost importance. We must make sure to give our bodies all of the clean nutrients that it needs. For the purpose of this article, we will be talking mostly about when we should eat. With that said, Intermittent Fasting is a tool that we can implement to help us stay lean and make sure that we do not have sensitivities to certain hormones that regulate blood sugar. What exactly does this look like for me? First, please note that this is not just “not eating” for a long time so that you can stuff your face, so to speak, with everything in sight right after. Intermittent Fasting is not an excuse to eat a bunch of junk at one time because we are “starving” ourselves. It actually can help us to control our eating habits in a healthy way. It is a progression that starts off by cutting out snacking and eating all throughout the day, meaning that we are just having breakfast, lunch and dinner and in that we are still giving our bodies everything it needs for fuel. After a while of getting accustomed to that, the next stage of progression is to acquire all of our food in a window of eight hours during the day meaning that we will be in the fasted state for sixteen hours. This is the stage that I utilize most often. Once we have that down then we can progress to a window of four hours of eating and twenty hours of fasting. This final stage may not be feasible or sustainable for many people. So, I would suggest doing the second stage at least a couple times a week. The different stages of Intermittent Fasting are: • Only have three meals, no snacking. • 16:8 (Sixteen hours in the fasted state/Eight hours in the fed state) • 20:4 (Twenty hours in the fasted state/Four hours in the fed state) I have seen this implemented in many people’s lives and the results can be great. Find the stage that works best for you to do a few days a week. If done right, Intermittent Fasting can be a great tool along with diet and exercise to help us stay healthy and lean for a lifetime. — Ashton Tate, Personal Trainer, Franklin, Tenn. To Be Thankful A few years ago, Golf Digest magazine published an article titled, “28 Things We are Thankful for In Golf.” It is a creative list and many of the items resonate with why I love the game so much, things like Masters Week, the First Tee Foundation which introduces so many kids to the game, and having the course to yourself on those dew-drenched summer mornings when the sun is coming up and it is so quiet you can practically hear yourself breath. There were also some pretty funny things listed in the article. Things like, gimme putts (and I’ll take ‘em for birdies please!), that one unseasonably warm day that allows you to play golf during the winter, and golf scrambles – especially the In His Grip Golf kind! It really isn’t that difficult to be thankful, if we’re looking for opportunities to be thankful. In fact, pause just 30 seconds and think about several things - big or small - for which you are thankful. I can think of several, and one of the biggest is the gift God gave to my wife, Leslie, and I just a few years ago A recent photo of Scott’s precious family, his wife Leslie when the adoption and son, Micah. of our son was final. I’m so thankful to be a dad! You’ve probably heard the old call and echo that goes, “God is good, all the time. All the time, God is good.” It reminds me of one of my favorite Bible verses found in 1 Chronicles 16:34: “Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good; His love endures forever.” There is so much packed into that single sentence. “Give thanks to the Lord.” You could end that declarative sentence right there and it would be a complete thought. Wow, it blows my mind to think about all that God has done in my life, beginning with granting my salvation. Just thinking about that affirms the next part, “He is good.” Indeed, God is good, all the time! But then we come to that last phrase, “His love endures forever.” You may be familiar with the great Chris Tomlin song, “Forever,” that quotes this verse verbatim then declares, “Forever God is faithful, forever God is strong…Sing praise!” Praise flows from a thankful heart and nothing should generate more praise than the reality that God’s goodness and His love extended to us remain forever. And that makes for a Happy Thanksgiving! — Scott Lehman is President of In His Grip Golf Ministry and author of the popular book, “More than a Game.” Scott and his family live in Thompson Station, Tenn.

Thank You, God…But Can anyone relate to the days when listening to music meant vinyl records? Music was a shiny black disc spinning around on a turntable. I have poetic memories of the needle hitting the circular grooves in the vinyl and, suddenly, the power of my favorite 60's music filled the house. Only problem was: if my vinyl record got scratched, it absolutely ruined the music experience. Gratitude is sometimes like those old vinyl records. Potentially damaged. Like a scratched record, if gratitude is centered on me...instead of on Him...it skips a beat. Thanksgiving is our beloved season. This is our annual, recurrent celebration of gratitude. Our great American tradition. You already know that having gratitude requires more than the basic rituals of family, cooking, decorating the dinner table, fun, football, raucous voices, and overeating. It means hitting the “pause” button to tell the Lord that we are truly grateful. This year, a symphony of storms took their toll on us. We are emotionally wrenched by turmoil left in the wake of fire, water, and winds. Whether or not the storms touched us directly or indirectly, we are riveted by vivid, heart-wrenching images of Puerto Rico, or Texas, or California. And then,

there are the shouting, threatening voices of war, hatred, and death. Even personal storms seem worse this year. You end up with more month than money. Your child is sick. Your church crumbles into chaos. Relationships crash to the floor in a heap of ruin. That’s when our petitions of thankfulness often end with “but…God.” The needle of our gratitude is stuck in that damaged groove. Real gratitude demands an unselfish, totally committed, ever joyful heart. When life is broken, we need an “even now” gratitude. Like Jesus’ friend, Martha. We need a confidence that the storm will not destroy us. A faith that knows God sees and that He does care. Remember Martha? We see her standing outside of Lazarus’ grave, practically scolding Jesus. Okay, so now you’re here. Thank you for coming; but, Lord, our brother is dead. We buried him. You could have prevented this if only you had come when we called you. Nevertheless, I know that “even now…” (John 11:22)

Total gratitude has the power to break the chains of lack, failure, doubt, and fear. Thank Him before you give in to despair. Even before you see Lazarus walking towards you. Thank Him, without reservation. Whatever you need, He has the power to do this. For Thanksgiving, my offering is an “even now” gratitude! — Regina M. I can honestly say that, we are in the middle of my favorite time of year! October starts it off with crisp fall air and pumpkins everywhere! November brings Thanksgiving and December is not only Christmas but, my birthday as well! I absolutely adore the Holiday season and it’s hard for me not to skip straight to writing about Christmas music but, as I sat down and began to write, I was reminded of one of my favorite songs which is definitely a Thanksgiving song. Thank You Lord for Your Blessings On Me was written by James Easter in 1975. The Easter Brothers were the original group to record the song not long after it was penned. Jeff Easter said that his father wrote the song after getting his life right with God. He was thankful that God had been so good to him even though he did not have “everything” in the world’s eyes. This song has come to mean so much to me personally over the years. I’m so thankful for the Love of God in my life but I am also thankful for my family.

Four years ago, my dad was diagnosed with leukemia with only two days to live but he’s still alive and well today! There’s a line in the song that says, “You gave me your love Lord and a fine family!” That line always gets me choked up. What do you have to be thankful for this Thanksgiving?! Remember, Thanksgiving is a position of the heart… not just one day out of the year! (To hear this song by my husband and I, check out our YouTube channel [Austin and Amber] where there is a special Thanksgiving version posted) Happy Thanksgiving! — Amber Smith Dash lives in Hendersonville with her husband, Austin where they’re both a part of the Restoring Hope Church praise team. An Immigrant Turns Toward the Next Generation

With the recent national discussion about the shifting stance on immigration, it is easy to ignore the human stories which are the backing force behind these divisive issues. As a Mexican immigrant who spent most of her life as an undocumented immigrant, this month’s Nashville Volunteer of the Month, Jacky Gomez, reminds us of the selflessness and community engagement from the immigrant population often ignored by the mainstream media.

She understands her role within the community as a servant leader – or an individual who serves the community first and in doing so, develops as a community leader who is able to empower her surrounding connections. “Help to bring others with you on your way to success, encouraging others on. It’s not about you, it’s about community.”

Jacky works as a receptionist with the Hispanic Family Foundation, an organization that empowers and educates the Latino community through legal, economic, social, and cultural services. She also works as a Program Coordinator with YMCA Latino Achievers, a program supporting the professional and academic success of young Latinos. On top of that, Jacky also makes time to volunteer with the Tennessee Immigration and Refugee Rights Coalition to support the passage of more progressive immigration legislation.

Nashville’s Volunteer of the Month is a program of Doing Good, a 501(c)3, nonprofit organization which educates and inspires people by celebrating the real stories of real people who volunteer. For additional information about Jacky, Doing Good, or other volunteers, visit the website www.DoingGood.tv or @DoingGoodTV on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Instagram, or YouTube.

Christianity has played an integral role in Jacky’s development and her understanding of community in the Nashville area. It is important for Jacky to “further the Kingdom, not just the Church, but further the Kingdom at work. Work can also be a form of service.” Through her work with Barefoot Republic ministry summer camp,

the Greater Nashville Church in Antioch, and the Restore Small Group ministry, Jacky has exhibited her devotion to her faith and the community at large.

Has something in the magazine or something you have discussed with someone or some thoughts that you have had or something that you have heard, brought you to a point of realizing that you want and need to know Christ in the truest and personal sense?

If so, below is a simple outline for someone of any age who is not a Believer to act on their desire to accept Jesus Christ into their heart as their Savior. God’s Plan of Salvation God created us to honor and serve Him Revelation 4:11: “You are worthy, O Lord, To receive glory and honor and power; For You created all things, And by Your will they exist[b] and were created Each of us has sinned against God Romans 3:10: As it is written, “There is none righteous, no, not one” Romans3:23: For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,

Jesus Christ died on the cross in our place, paying the penalty for our sin Romans 5:8: But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. We each must accept Jesus Christ as our personal Savior Romans 10:9: that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. Romans 10:13: For “whoever calls on the name of the LORD shall be saved.”

The penalty for sin is eternal separation from God and Heaven Romans 6:23: For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. Good works cannot ever earn God’s forgiveness and Salvation Titus 3:5: not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us. God loves each of us John 3:16: For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.

To accept Christ into your heart and life, pray a simple prayer along these lines - “Dear God, I know that I am a sinner and I am sorry for my sins. I know that Jesus died for my sins and the sins of the world. Right now, I ask Jesus into my heart and receive Him as my personal Savior. Forgive me of my sins, thank you for saving me through the blood of Jesus. Please Lord, help me live for you. In Jesus name, amen.” All scriptures are taken from The New King James Version of the Holy Bible.
