Dr. and Mrs. Hopper were captivated by and had a great passion for art and antiques, focusing on pieces of a southern interest. The Hoppers started their collecting in the early 1970s. They often spent time traveling to such destinations as: New York, Washington D.C., North Carolina, Tennessee, and other places that held interest for their collecting. The Hoppers purchased pieces for their collection from nationally recognized dealers such as: Graham Arader, Rob Hicklin, Norman Flayderman, Herman A. Schindler, and other noted dealers with whom they established personal relationships throughout their collecting life.

The Hoppers took great pride and interest in their collection and how it was preserved. Their passion was so great that they went toadd a climate-controlled room to their home to maintain their objects in the best state possible.

The September collection includes art from Alice Huger Ravenell Smith, William Aiken Walker, Alfred Hutty, Elizabeth O’Neill Verner, Anna Hayward Taylor, and other noted southern artists. The furniture includes a Charleston, South Carolina secretary desk and a table believed to be of direct descent from the Arthur Middleton and Edward Rutledge families, both signers of the Declaration of Independence.

The second installment will be held this winter and include rare books, manuscripts, maps, and ephemera. Many of the pieces have not been offered in the marketplace for years. To be included is a two-page letter dated 4 July 1780 from General Charles Cornwallis stating that he has taken Charleston and will take the rest of the Carolinas. This letter is just one example of the depth of the collection. Charlton Hall believes that this offering may present collectors with a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to acquire such rare and important pieces of historical significance.
