Design Tips

How to Create a Dreamy Space You’ll Love? 1. Painting your walls with neutral tones of white, beige or gray allows color flexibility. 2. Metallic or mirrored night stands can give a quick lift to your bedroom haven. If a new piece is not in your budget, metallic spray paint or chalk paint can update your ‘Old to New’! 3. Do you want to be daring? Try a deep teal or a vibrant pink for your night stand. Add crystal knobs and silver accents for a ‘Touch of ‘Bling’! 4. To complete your makeover place a mirror over your night stand to compliment your style. SleepDesigns ® Bahama Queen Mattress

Using the Sword of the Spirit both Defensively and Offensively The second half of (Ephesians 6:17) states, we must also take up the Sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. The sword is part of the armor that is used for protection, but it is also the only offensive weapon that we have been given. First let us consider how it is used defensively. The Sword - A Defensive Weapon We read in the bible that if we have faith in God, we can do anything. As a defensive weapon, the Sword of the Spirit is especially used to block the sword of the devil, which of course is the word of the devil. As soon as the Sword of the Spirit is put in your hand, it can be used to block even negative prophecies by simply determining to believe the Word of God above anything else. You see, the Sword of the Spirit can block any word that the devil sends at us. All we have to do is use it. Is that not what Jesus did when the devil tempted Him? Repeatedly He said, "It is

written!" If the Word Himself would so use the written Word, how much more should we? What negative words have been spoken over you? Words like: "You'll never be a success. Your marriage will fail. You're going to die of cancer like your parent," etc. You need to immediately take up the Sword of the Spirit against these swords of the devil and drive them back. They will only be true prophecies if you do not resist them. The Sword - An Offensive Weapon Now let's talk about how we use the Sword of the Spirit offensively. (II Corinthians 10:4-5) says: "for the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh, but divinely powerful for the destruction of fortresses. We are destroying speculations and every lofty thing raised up against the knowledge of God, and we are taking every thought captive to the obedience of Christ". The devil erects fortresses of deception that

From the Editor keep people in bondage with his negative words. He uses fear to bind people the way the Lord uses faith to set us free. Words are without question the most powerful force in the world. The Word of God has the power of God behind it. This is why statements that were spoken under the anointing of the Spirit have changed history more than armies ever could. Words Have Power Leo Tolstoy, a great novelist, once said, "Prophecy is like a fire that is lit in a dry wood. It will burn and burn and burn until all of the wood, hay, and stubble is consumed." Tolstoy used the destruction of slavery as an example of this. When righteous men and women spoke under the anointing that slavery was wrong, a fire began to burn all over the world. Within decades an institution that had existed all over the world since the beginning of recorded history, ceased to exist on the earth except

in a few scattered, remote places. When during the Civil War Abraham Lincoln met Harriet Beecher Stowe, who had written the book Uncle Tom's Cabin, he said to her, "So you're the little lady who started this Great War!" Words, spoken or written under the anointing of God, have a power like no other power on earth. We have been entrusted with this power and must learn to use it until every evil stronghold has been destroyed. Of course the ultimate stronghold of the devil over the earth will be broken by the sword that comes from the Lord's own mouth when He returns. However, we are not supposed to wait until then to use what He has entrusted to us. What are the evil strongholds in your family? Ask the Lord to give you the anointed words to speak over your family. Find the See USING THE SWORD on Page 37

The Only Source of Wisdom The twentieth century produced an information explosion unparalleled in human history-instant access to volumes of knowledge at the click of your mouse. Yet with all we have learned and with all that's been written, man's wisdom is still impotent to answer life's most basic spiritual questions like: How did we get here? Where do I go when I die? What is the meaning of life? I once read a book by a psychiatrist on how to deal with depression. A section entitled "Reprogramming Your Conscious Mind" particularly caught my attention.

Her first suggestion was that every time you have a negative thought, shout, "Cancel!" She also recommended sleep programming-playing a tape recording all night that contains lots of positive feedback. During the day, according to her, you should listen to positive music. The doctor also thought it would be helpful to cultivate a meaningful spiritual philosophy. She said you need to find a belief system that works for you-any will do-but be sure to avoid people who talk about sin and guilt. Her final recommendation was to find the light in yourDriver's License renewaLs (aLL Locations except Gretna)

self. Unfortunately, that is the best human wisdom can do. True Wisdom Begins with God God defines wisdom this way: "Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom; and to depart from evil is understanding" (Job 28:28). That verse describes saving faith-both fearing God and departing from evil take place initially at conversion. So you begin to be wise when you fear God by trusting in Him and repenting of your sins. As long as you have only human wisdom-or to put it in James' words, that which is "earthly, natural, demonic" (3:15)you cannot know God or true wisdom. Without that critical first step, there is no relationship to the Giver of all wisdom and understanding. On the other hand, if you have submitted to the gospel in repentance, you know the "only wise God" (Rom. 16:27) as your Father. His book of wisdom is open to you as a Christian. The indwelling Spirit of wisdom illuminates to you the wisdom of His Word-you truly can be wise. Why then do we still have a sinful tendency to look first to man's wisdom and virtually ignore the sufficiency of God's wisdom found in the Bible? I think if we truly understand the stark contrast-the absolute opposition of the one to the other-we will leave behind the elementary understanding of the world to embrace the riches of divine wisdom. Human vs. Divine Wisdom Today your thinking is attacked by worldly philosophies and methodologies in an attempt to divert you from the Word of God-the only

source that can satisfy the deep needs of the human heart. It's not a new attack; the Corinthian believers had the same problem. They were strongly influenced by the prevailing ideas of their day. When they became Christians and were awakened to the revelation of God, they were exposed to an obvious conflict. Paul, describing that conflict, said, "The word of the cross is to those who are perishing foolishness, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.... Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world?" (1 Cor. 1:18, 20). While the first-century philosophers viewed the wisdom of God as foolishness, in truth, God exposed their so-called "wisdom" as foolish. That opposition makes the wisdom of the world and the wisdom of God incompatible-they are mutually exclusive. God has given man the ability to study, analyze, categorize, and develop the physical resources of this earth to benefit physical life. But that's where his wisdom ends. Because of sin, his mind is totally unable to discern the spiritual dimension. He has no power to change his own heart, no understanding to solve his spiritual dilemma, and no resources to satisfy his soul-he is spiritually dead. The wisdom of men makes no contribution in the spiritual dimension, and it doesn't need to make a contribution. God's wisdom is rich and infinite-it needs no supplement. 11 Reasons to Worship with Your Family Today I read a wonderful post by Jason Helopoulos about family worship. I thought I would share the “meat” with you. I trust it encourages you to begin a consistent, daily time of prayer and Bible reading in your own home as you worship together as a family. Most evangelical Christians are aware of the importance of secret and corporate worship, but fewer have even heard of family worship. What is family worship? It is pretty simple. Tonight, sit down with your family on the couch or at the dinner table. And then . . . pray together, read the Bible together, and sing a great hymn of the faith together. There are many reasons for doing family worship, but let us just mention a handful. Learn More about Family Worship Family worship: 1. Glorifies and Honors God — This is the primary and essential reason. 2. Centers the Home – Family worship has the wonderful effect of centering our homes upon Christ. 3. Encourages Christian Character – The home may be the hardest place to live out our Christian lives. There is a reason that Paul addresses each member of the Christian family in the household passages of (Ephesians 5-6) and (Colossians 3). It is a sad reality that we often manifest the character of Christ more consistently at church, in the workplace, and in the community then we do in our own homes. If there is somewhere that I must especially be on guard against sin, the flesh, and our adversary, it is at home. Casualness and familiarity is a ready playing field for sin. 4. Encourages Peace in the Home – We are sinners living under the same roof in tight quarters. That is a recipe for disaster or at least pain! We know our family members, and we know them well. Family worship helps us confront our sin and understand its effect upon one another. For example, it is awfully hard for a father to lead his family in worship when he has just yelled at his wife. If he is going to lead his family before the throne of grace, he will first have to ask for forgiveness from his wife. And she will find that it is hard to worship unless she willingly forgives him.

5. Binds the Family Together – In our fast-moving society there are few things that a family does together daily. Even eating a meal together these days seems like a feat. What if your family gathered together daily? And what if that gathering was for worship? It would become the most important and central aspect of its life. Your entire family will come to the realization that no matter what else we do or don’t do, the most important thing that marks us as a family is that we are a worshiping family submitted to Christ. And that bond is an eternal one that strengthens the family in all its other endeavors. 6. Provides Common Knowledge – As the Scriptures are read together in family worship, the family grows in common knowledge. Conversations around the dinner table or in the car will change dramatically as you have a common knowledge from which to converse. 7. Trains Children for Corporate Worship – Family worship provides the added benefit of training our children for corporate worship. As they sit and listen to the Word of God, hear prayers, and sing hymns these elements in corporate worship will take on a new meaning. The value of this cannot be overestimated. 8. Encourages our Children in Christ – They will see that for mom and dad worship is not just something they do on Sunday mornings. It is something at the very core of their being, important enough that they center their home upon it. We are not raising children just to be moral and competent people, but worshipers of the triune God. 9. Reinforces Spiritual Headship – Family worship reinforces the biblical framework of the family as it looks to the father (or the mother if she is single) as the spiritual leader of the home. As a father leads his children and wife before God’s throne nightly and disciples them in the things of Christ, they will increasingly look to him for spiritual leadership. This has the added benefit of reinforcing with the father/husband the spiritual mantle that is upon his shoulders. 10. Provides Systematic DisSee 11 REASONS on Page 38

God wants your family to succeed and prosper, and He has given you the blueprint to make your family's happiness possible! The Bible contains rock-solid principles upon which you can build a strong family. The Foundation of the Family Notice the foundation God has laid for the family. At creation, God formed Eve from Adam's side to be his helper and to complete him. Then, God performed the first marriage and blessed the lifelong union of one man and one woman. (Genesis 2:18) says, "And the LORD God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him." And He did, then He gave the first wedding vow, "Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh." Put it down big and bold — God is the architect of the home. If your family is going to stand against the storms that will blow, you must hold fast to the Word and it's promises and commands for your home. I love (Psalm 27:1), which says, "Except the LORD build the house, they labor in vain that build it." Building a home is a very complicated matter that takes more than human wit and wisdom to accomplish. You need a divine plan and a divine Builder to construct a happy, fruitful, and prosperous Christian home. That Builder and that plan are Christ and His Word. The Flexibility of Family Did you know that the span of the great Gold Gate Bridge in San Francisco, California, will sway as much as 20 feet? The two towers of that bridge are solidly anchored, yet the suspended bridge can move a little and still maintain its strength. What a beautiful picture of a happy, healthy Christian home! Your family needs some flexibility — some room to move. Now, I'm not talking about throwing out the rules. I'm talking about the family that laughs and has fun together — a home where people don't make big things out of little irritations and where a word of forgiveness is always ready. (1 Corinthians 13:48) has much to say that applies to the love we need to show in our families:

Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up, Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil; Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth; Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things. Charity never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away. Do you want happy marriage? Do you desire a successful family? Then, learn to love one another, learn to be a generous grace-giver. Take some of the stress off of yourself, your mate, and your children. Make your home a place of love and laughter. The Fruit of the Family There are three important truths in (Psalm 127) about the happiness children bring to the home. First, children are desirable. (Psalm 127:3) says, "Children are an heritage of the LORD and the fruit of the womb is his reward." Second, children are directable. (Psalm 127:4) says, "As arrows are in the hand of a mighty man; so are children of the youth." And when raised in the nurture and admonition of the Lord, children are dependable. (Psalm 127:5) says, "Happy is the man that hath his quiver full of them: they shall not be ashamed, but they shall speak with the enemies in the gate." Children are not a burden, but a blessing. Happy is the home where children are welcomed and loved as we would welcome and love the Lord Jesus Himself! (Matthew 18:5) says, "And whoso shall receive one such little child in my name receiveth me." We must begin today to take our families back; otherwise the world will become our children's parent. You can begin today with these few principles. I pray that your family will succeed and that His Word will bring revival and renewed commitment to you and yours. © 2016 Love Worth Finding Ministries, P.O. Sexual Purity By Nancy Leigh DeMoss But among you there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality, or of any kind of impurity, or of greed, because these are improper for God’s holy people. (Eph. 5:3) Some practical ways to maintain sexual purity . . . • Practice discretion with your eyes, dress, speech, and behavior. Avoid conversation, eye contact, and prayer of an intimate nature. • Learn to be modest, rather than enticing men and causing them to lust. • Keep free from emotional entanglements. Guard your heart! • Do not indulge in mental fantasies. • Do not indulge in unholy thoughts and desires such as a crush on another woman’s husband. • Do not act bold and flirtatious. • Do not using sexually explicit or coarse language. • Do not be entertained by offcolor humor that legitimizes

sexual sin. • Abstain from physical contact that could stimulate illegitimate sexual desires. • Keep the marriage bed undefiled—yours and others’. • Do not withhold sex from your spouse (making him more vulnerable to sin). • Put high hedges up in regard to email and cell phones. • Do not feed on books, movies, or music that fuels romantic desires that cannot be legitimately fulfilled. • Meditate on and practice (Phil. 4:8) in your entertainment choices: “Whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.” • Be willing to do battle when tempted. • Be accountable. • Resolve to be pure and to wait until marriage. It’s a whole lot harder to wait once you have tasted it. © Revive Our Hearts. Used with permission. www.ReviveOurHearts. com Info@ReviveOurHearts.com >

CHANGING TIMES DISCLAIMER As editor of Changing Times, there are often concerns that both On Eagles Wings and Save the Nations Ministries share. Sometimes, there are articles or advertisements that do not exactly line up with the views of Changing Times. Changing Times continues to be published by advertisement and offerings of the readers. While Changing Times advertises businesses, videos, books, and articles, we attempt to do so without contradiction to scripture. We pray that these are used to build the Church and not lead it astray with doctrines that were not given to the Disciples (Galatians 1:8). It is almost an impossibility to research each advertisement or article to reveal error in enough time before publication. As humans we all make mistakes, but as Christians we must remember that error will always ride in on the back of truth. This is what makes it seem so good. It is with these statements, that we ask the following of our readers. The Bereans were recognized for being good stewards over the word of God (Acts 17:10-11). They studied and checked the things, which were taught to be sure they were true and lined up with the scripture. As such, we are no different. Each of us has the responsibility to do the same. This paper attempts to be conservative in belief and bring the gospel to the readers in a balanced fashion, as scripture demands. The Cross of Christ should always be the center of each and every Christians understanding of the gospel to include salvation, sanctification and glorification. Jesus the Christ is the source and the Cross, is the means. Due to reason of deception, many have begun falling away from the purity of that message. There is little said about sin, repentance, the saving Blood, the completed work of the Cross and the necessity of placing our faith in Jesus, and that completed sacrifice. We not only ask, but also beg our reading audience to also be good Bereans. If we find something we understand to be against scripture, we will remove it as we find it, but there are some things that get by us. The Bible speaks of a last day deception that if it were possible, would deceive the very elect of God (Matthew 24). Help us help you. Please, in these last days — Be good Bereans. We pray that each article and advertisement will serve to bless, encourage and increase knowledge and understanding of a relationship with the King of Kings. These are most assuredly troubling times — hold fast to that which is true. In His Service, Save the Nations Ministries

Biblical Portrait of Womanhood By Nancy Leigh DeMoss Within my lifetime, there has been a sweeping revolution—a revolution of how women view themselves and their roles, how they view men, how they view their families, and how they function in our culture. Whether they realize it or not, the vast majority of Christian women have bought into this “new” way of thinking. In the home, the church, and the marketplace, they have adopted the values and belief system of the world around them. The world promises freedom and fulfillment to those who embrace its philosophy. But sadly, millions of women who have done so have ended up disillusioned, wounded, and in terrible bondage. For more than 20 years, I have listened to the heart cries of these women: • women who are exhausted from trying to juggle the demands of job and family • women who are desperately lonely • women who feel trapped in unhappy marriages • women who battle a pervasive sense of hopelessness and despair • women who live under a crushing load of guilt and failure • women who are struggling to find a sense of purpose in the midst of the “daily-ness” of life • women who have never known what it is to have whole relationships built on mutual love and commitment • women who live with crippling fears and chronic anxiety I find that many women have given up hope that they can ever be released

from their emotional and spiritual prisons. But over and over again, I have seen a light kindled in their eyes when they discover that the “abundant life” God promised truly can be a reality, regardless of their circumstances. The purpose of this booklet is to help us discover the path to that abundant life and to examine our lives in light of God’s design and plan. Before you go any further, I feel I should warn you that what you are about to read is not politically correct. It flies in the face of what we have been taught as 21st-century, “liberated” women. It is contrary to our natural instincts. It will never be the majority position and is likely to make some women uncomfortable. But I can assure you that it is the only path to true joy, peace, and fulfillment as a woman. You see, God made us, He loves us, and we can only be whole when we function according to His design for our lives. If your heart longs to be free to fulfill the purpose for which you were created, I invite you to join me in seeking to know the heart and ways of God. I am praying that God will orchestrate a counter-revolution in our day—a quiet revolution of women who are willing to pattern their lives, not after the world, but after the Word of God. I am convinced that the influence of an army of godly women will be incalculable—in our homes, our churches, and our culture. Will you be one of those women? © Revive Our Hearts. Boy-girl Friendships By Wendy Buckler The unexpected knock at my front door brought up images of a door-to-door salesman. But resisting my urge to hide, I opened the door and found the person standing on my porch was not a stranger, nor was she selling anything. It was a classmate of my 10-year-old son, and she had made him a gift … complete with a love letter! Honestly, I would have preferred a long spiel from a vacuum salesman. To say I felt shocked and unprepared would be an understatement, but the situation led to an important conversation with my son. When I presented the gift to him, I did not tell him who it was from (to protect them both from an awkward encounter the next day), but I did talk with him about girls and feelings. I shared that he had arrived at the age where girls start to admire and have special feelings about boys. Even though he was not having reciprocal feelings yet, I explained he should be sensitive to those who are and treat them with the same kindness and respect that he would want to receive if the roles were reversed. I’m sure he

would have preferred a talk about baseball and lizards. Even if dating is years off, it's never too early to teach our children how to communicate and interact with members of the opposite sex in a healthy manner. As I found, the subject may literally come knocking on your door much earlier than you expect. Create opportunity One way to encourage healthy interactions is to provide opportunities for your children to develop friendships with members of the opposite sex. This will benefit them now as well as in their future dating relationships. The Focus on the Family Guide to Talking with Your Kids About Sex says parents should emphasize friendship skills with the opposite sex: “True intimacy in later years will require friendship skills, not just romantic emotions.” When children know and are comfortable around the opposite gender, they are less likely to develop the kind of curiosity that can lead to very early dating. Keep it positive As parents we can help our kids

Children cultivate healthy attitudes by paying close attention to how we talk about relationships with the opposite sex. Boy-girl relationships should neither be put on an altar nor talked about negatively. Sheila Wray Gregoire, Christian author and parenting expert, says that negative talk about dating and sex can lead kids to decide “boys are yucky” or “girls are scary,” causing them to end up with a negative perception of members of the opposite sex. Instead, parents should try to maintain a positive attitude as you help your kids find ways to experience healthy platonic relationships. Model healthy relationships It has often been said that children learn what they live. Modeling love and respect within our families is where healthy relationships — including those with the opposite sex — start. Show affection to your spouse and your kids, and don’t stop being affectionate with your children as they age. Hug them, wrestle with them, lean against

each other while you watch a movie. My children are now 17, 14 and 11, and they all still love to be tackled and tickled. Kids who aren't receiving healthy physical affection from family members may be more likely to seek out physical attention elsewhere. Give kids opportunities to practice loving and respectful behavior and good manners by planning mother-son and daddy-daughter date nights. My daughter loved getting dressed up for dates with Dad, and my boys enjoyed being given cash to keep in their wallets so they could pay for dinner with me. Family is the perfect place to combat the steady flow of information in the media about what our culture considers healthy and acceptable. Study the Bible or read a Christian book together and create the safe space your kids need to learn what God’s Word says about See FRIENDSHIPS on Page 35

What Kind of Dirt Are You? by Linda Edwards "I want to help!" "Me, too! Me, too!" "May I, please?" The children gathered around excitedly as Mom took the seed packets out of the shopping bag. "I want the carrots." "Then give me the pumpkins." "But I don't want to plant onions. Yuck!" With a laugh, Mom divided the seeds among the children. "This year, each of you will have your own garden. You will get to choose where you want to plant your seeds, and you will be responsible for weeding and watering your own plot. So before you get started, you need to go outside and search carefully for the perfect spot." With that, the children went outside. They looked around the front yard and the backyard. They considered things like where the sun would come up in the morning and how far the water hose would reach. Each child chose the perfect place for planting a garden. Jerry took great care to dig the soil properly. He removed all the weeds and rocks he found and read the back of the package to make sure the seeds were planted deep enough. He faithfully tended his garden all summer long. On the hottest days, when the others didn't want to work in their gardens, he could be found working diligently outside. Sally started off right. She also made sure her garden was planted in good soil and removed the weeds and rocks. However, as time went on, she lost interest in her plants. Other things became more important to her. Instead of working in the garden on those hot summer days, she preferred to spend her time talking on the telephone to her friends. It didn't take long for weeds to grow up and take over her garden. Soon it became difficult to tell exactly which were weeds and which were the plants. Billy didn't think he needed to go to all the trouble. He didn't realize how important it was to have good soil. He didn't want to dig deep because the rocks were in the way, and it was hard to dig them out. So he just left them there and tried planting his seeds around the rocks. Then there was Jill. She took her seeds and just scattered them around on the top of the ground. She quick-

ly lost interest and didn't bother to even try to take care of her garden the rest of the summer. Now take a few minutes to think about what kind of harvest each of the children was able to get from his garden when summer was over and it was time to pick the ripe vegetables. If you guessed that Jerry had a good harvest, you are absolutely right. He had plenty of vegetables. In fact, he was able to set up a table in front of his house and sell some to the neighbors. Sally had some good vegetables, but most of them were small because the weeds grew up and took the nutrition out of the ground. She wasn't able to sell any of her vegetables because people were buying Jerry's. Billy didn't have much to pick. His plants had a little soil around them, and at first they looked like they were going to grow, but when the really hot days came, the poor plants just couldn't live. They wilted and died. Unfortunately, Jill didn't have any plants by the end of the summer. Remember how she scattered her seeds on the top of the ground? Well, the birds came along and had themselves quite a good lunch. They didn't leave any seeds to grow into plants. Jesus told a story, called a parable, about four kinds of soil. A farmer went out to his fields to plant seeds. Some of the seeds fell on top of the ground, and the birds came along and ate them up. Some of the seeds grew in the rocky soil, and they sprouted up quickly but died in the heat of the sun. Some of the seeds tried to grow where there were weeds, and, of course, they didn't grow very well. Then there were some seeds that fell in the good soil, and they grew strong and See WHAT KIND OF DIRT on Page 37

Rich in spiritual experiences by Thomas Brooks The mature Christian is rich in spiritual experiences. Oh! the experiences that he has . . . of the ways of God, of the workings of God, of the word of God, of the love of God! Oh! the divine stories that old Christians can tell . . . of the power of the word, of the sweetness of the word, of the usefulness of the word— as a light to lead the soul, as a staff to support the soul, as a spur to quicken the soul, as an anchor to stay the soul, and as a cordial to comfort and strengthen the soul! Oh! the stories that he can tell concerning . . . the love of Christ, the blood of Christ, the offices of Christ, the merits of Christ, the righteousness of Christ, the graces of Christ, and the influence of Christ! Oh! the stories that an old disciple can tell . . . of the indwellings of the Spirit, of the operations of the Spirit, of the teachings of the Spirit, of the leadings of the Spirit, of the sealings of the Spirit, of the witnessings of the Spirit, and of the comforts and joys of the Spirit! Oh the stories that an old Christian can tell . . .

of the evil of sin, of the bitterness of sin, of the deceitfulness of sin, of the prevalence of sin, and of the happiness of conquest over sin! Oh! the stories that he can tell you . . . of the snares of Satan, of the devices of Satan, of the temptations of Satan, of the rage of Satan, of the malice of Satan, of the watchfulness of Satan, and of the ways of triumphing over Satan! As an old soldier can tell you of many battles, many scars, many wounds, many losses, and many victories—even to admiration; so an old saint is able to tell you of many spiritual battles, many scars, many wounds, many losses, and many victories—even to admiration. Experimental religion is far beyond mere notions and impressions. A sanctified heart is better than a silver tongue. No man so rich, so honorable, so happy—as the old disciple, who is rich in spiritual experiences. "The righteous will flourish like a palm tree, they will grow like a cedar of Lebanon; planted in the house of the Lord, they will flourish in the courts of our God. They will still bear fruit in old age, they will stay fresh and green." (Psalm 92:12-14). >

Evangelizing at Eighty by Brenda Blakely A testimony from Brenda K. Blakely

The visit from these eighty+ year old evangelists forever changed the direction of our lives. It must have taken the three (3) of them twenty (20) minutes or so to get up the makeshift stairs of our trailer and supper was burning on the stove. Preparation for supper was well underway when I noticed a car that had ventured the 800 feet down our gravel driveway, negotiated the turn on the way and parked close by our trailer. Three aging southern ladies were working their way toward the makeshift steps leading to the doorway of our trailer. The difficulty of the steps, canes and uncooperative limbs made the climb almost nonnegotiable. From a respectable vantage point I watched them undauntedly pro-

ceed to come up those stairs. I kept expecting to hear a knock. Knock, knock, I didn’t have the heart not to answer after they had persevered to make it to this point. So I quickly answered the door, let them in with instructions to take a seat and rescued supper by slowing the cooking process down a bit. I greeted them while trying to keep an eye on the contents of our evening meal cooking on the stove. Once they were comfortably settled on the couch they accepted the glass of tea I offered and we began to talk. I continued to keep an eye on supper and remembered I had some cookies in the oven. They were suitable fare for company and

Changing Times

Been There, Done That by Alan Allegra These are tough times for seniors, and not just in society. Churches are slowly and, hopefully unwittingly, marginalizing seniors, relegating them to socials and pot luck suppers. Changes are made to service times and styles to attract the youth, who are perceived to be the future of the church. In fact, a recent denominational newsletter stated, “The Church’s greatest assets are its children.” True, young people, when properly trained, become a vital part of the church, but the key concept here is “training.” Who will do the training? God’s Word is abundantly clear: the older folks (preferably parents) are to train the next generation of believers. Children play a very minor role in the Scriptures and certainly, with the exception of King Josiah, do not assume leadership or primary positions. In both Old and New Testaments, the elders of the population are responsible for governing, training, and setting the example for the younger crowd. In (Genesis 18:19), the Lord said, “For I have chosen (Abraham), so that he will direct his children and his household after him to keep the way of the Lord by doing what is right and just, so that the Lord will bring about for Abraham what he has promised him.” Notice that the fulfillment of the Lord’s promises was conditioned upon Abraham directing his children and household, and his direction was not to be merely words but lifestyle. Talk about Lifestyles Over 50 (the magazine in which this was published)! Abraham was 100 years old when he had his first child, and at that age was not cast aside, but was responsible for training the future generations! (Psalm 71) could very easily be Abraham’s autobiography. Consider verses 17–21: Since my youth, O God, you have taught me, and to this day I declare your marvelous deeds. Even when I am old and gray, do not forsake me, O God,

till I declare your power to the next generation, your might to all who are to come. Your righteousness reaches to the skies, O God, you who have done great things. Who, O God, is like you? Though you have made me see troubles, many and bitter, you will restore my life again; from the depths of the earth you will again bring me up. You will increase my honor and comfort me once again. The Psalmist had been through bitter trials, yet he literally lived to tell younger generations about the Lord! However, we older folks have to learn, too, so we CAN teach the kids! Pastor Titus was told by Paul what to teach in (Titus 2:1–4), which includes sound doctrine and good character. This equips the older men and women to teach the younger men and women. There is no room here for learning from society or psychology or the streets or Oprah. We also learn from our own experiences and the experiences of others. In fact, the records of the Old Testament were written so we could learn from them (1 Corinthians 10:11). This is why seniors can say, “Been there, done that” or can point young people to Bible characters that they can learn from. Seniors can never overestimate their importance in the church. And churches should never underestimate them, either. Churches must not only provide opportunities for seniors to grow no matter how old they are; they should take every opportunity to pair them up to mentor young people. Leaders aren’t called “elders” for nothing! As society swirls faster and faster away from traditions and truth, seniors must stand as lighthouses to guide youth through troubled waters, and as pillars to which the young can tie their hopes and desires, to keep them from drifting away. >

Pink Frosting by Sara Harricharan I trace intricate little swirls along the edge of the sponge cake. This is one cake I wish I didn't really have anything to do with. The swirls are perfect and evenly spaced. Just like the memories I have of you. I miss you, Grandma, especially on the rainy days. I miss your smile, your laughter, your kisses. Most of all, I miss your hugs. Tomorrow is Valentine's Day. That was our favorite holiday. I can't find anything right about now. Surviving it without you, is one thing I didn't think would come so soon. You were so good at helping me feel better, whether I had any hearts or not. I was more than content to stand by you and watch as you swirled pretty pink frosting. Thank you for leaving your bakery to me. I have to thank you, at least. I wish that you were still here with me, to help when I'm making almond paste. The big mixer near the window

gave out last night. So I've made all your cakes by hand. It doesn't feel right to serve cake at your funeral, but Daddy says that's what you wanted. Pink frosting adorns each one, framing the top and sides. I know why you chose pink. I wish it wasn't for me. You know pink isn't my favorite color. You also know how good I look in it too. Like the pink leather jacket you bought for me on Christmas. The pink scarf and gloves on my birthday and Daddy says you left something else for me. Instructions say not to open it until I've finished frosting the cakes. I've waited and frosted as patiently as I could. This is the last cake. There we go. Now to see what you were hiding for me. A jewelry box? Grandma, I hope you didn't blow your life savings over me. Oh my. The locket.

The one with the diamond in it, that you used to wear everywhere. You told me one day you'd let me see the picture inside, but you never did. My fingers are so clumsy right now, trying to open the catch on the side. It's us. A picture of me in my pink coat and you in your pink dress, at the shopping mall. My first family excursion, right after my folks adopted me. I'd almost forgotten. You were like a fairy that day. With a gray halo. Your smile sparkled and you hugged me every time I wanted to cry. Then you bought me a pink coat. To match your dress. Thank you, Grandma. I love you, still. Communicating properly with our spouse is an absolute must in marriage. Identifying what’s proper communication and what’s not takes good listening skills, compassion and understanding. Communication breakdown begins for two obvious reasons. When we don’t clarify or make known, exactly what we mean to say, and when we scream, yell, accuse, and blame. So what can we do? Has your spouse ever asked you to do something important but you misunderstood the exact meaning of what they truly needed done and you did it totally different? How about this one? Has your spouse ever talked to you about their feelings, but you weren’t really listenP understand L A ing and so you didn’t them and what they meant? 504.245.8221 Ambiguous conversation between couples leaves much to be desired. It can truly lead couples from knowing about each other when they don’t take the time to understand proper communication methods. We are not born to be good communicators. It takes considerable amount of perseverance and focus to understand what people really mean when they talk, even those we love and live with. Here are a few techniques you can try next time you are having an intimate moment with your spouse. Try not to be vague and ambiguous about what you really want and need. Have your spouse explain back to you what they interpreted from what you said. Don’t be afraid to be yourself and share your feelings with your loved ones. If you have a spouse who discredits your thoughts and feelings, maybe you can teach them by showing your own understanding of their feelings? Be a good example. We are commanded to treat others in the same manner we want to be treated. If we can remember this is what God desires of us, we can be more considerate and kind to our spouse. It is VERY rude to shun or make fun of the feelings and thoughts of those whose opinions are different than ours. Instead of doing this, first try to be more understanding of their feelings, and then explain in a nice way, why you disagree. Another reason behind faulty communication is how we converse

during arguments and even during everyday talk with our spouse. Arguments don’t have to end in a bad way…and what about the screaming and yelling matches? It doesn’t matter who is right, what matters is respecting each other even through the negative feelings. We should be trying to understand where the other person is coming from by putting ourselves in their shoes. Each time a conversation or argument doesn’t get resolved more resentment and animosity will build up. This is how couples become alienated from each other. Couples will eventually stop sharing and giving of themselves with each other. But this is not what God NwantsTfor A T We I are O comN marriage. manded to love others, to forgive, SouthernOaksPlantation.com and to have faith in God to ask Him for what we need. Our daily bread does not come from the person we married but from God. Once we have our dose of daily bread, we can be loving and considerate communicators. We should never expect too much from our spouse, especially during disagreements. What we can do though, is let them know that we don’t always have to be right. We do this through our actions of giving in during a heated argument. We can then explain to them what we need and want in a manner that will make it easier for them to understand us. Take turns, without interrupting one another about the way each feels on the issue being discussed. End the argument in a good way by resolving both sides of the issue. Anyone can be a good communicator by first being a good listener. For Christ himself is our peace, who has made the two one and has destroyed the barrier, the dividing wall of hostility. The St. Mary’s Dominican High School blessing and dedication of the Gayle and Tom Benson Science and Technology Complex on April 22 marked the culmination of 14 months of construction that began after Dominican’s announcement in September 2014 of the STREAM™ —Science, Technology, Religion, Engineering, Arts and Math – initiative, which continues Dominican’s unique role in the formation of students who are believing thinkers and thinking believers. It impacts three areas of ongoing improvement at the 156-year-old school: formation, curriculum and campus facilities. STREAM™ explores the relationship between faith and reason by integrating science, technology, religion, engineering, arts and math. “The Dominican Sisters of Peace are thrilled that our young women now have a state of the art facility where they may be prepared to become exceptional leaders in science and technology. This bold initiative is in keeping with our Dominican heritage and provides a fertile environment that showcases the harmonious relationship between faith and science in our Catholic tradition,” said Sr. Patricia Twohill, O.P., Prioress of the Dominican Sisters of Peace. At the dedication, the Bensons shared, “The timeless importance of education is paramount to our world’s future successes and with the lightspeed development in these disciplines, specifically as it relates to the studies of science and technology, provide the educators and students the necessary resources to be on the cutting edge in their educational pursuits.” The $10 million, two-story, 16,940 square-foot complex doubles pre-construction laboratory space. How did we get the New Testament? By Dr. Charles Stanley We know that the books in the Old Testament are important because they not only foreshadow the Lord Jesus, but He also taught those who followed Him from them. Though the 27 books of the New Testament were written after Jesus was crucified and resurrected, they were recognized as authentic because they were written by people who had direct contact with Christ and were divinely inspired. Just like a book was considered canonical when Moses or David wrote it, a book was recognized as authoritative when an apostle such as John or Paul wrote it. The New Testament was written more quickly than the Old Testament—it was completed within half a century. This means that all the books were completed, copied, and distributed before AD 100. In fact by AD 95, a letter written by Clement of Rome (an early church father who may have been a student of Paul) shows the influence of Mat-

thew, Luke, Romans, Corinthians, Ephesians, Timothy, Titus, and Peter—a sign that the books were well known and circulated within the early church. In The Origin of the Bible, Milton Fisher writes, “The first three outstanding church fathers, Clement, Polycarp, and Ignatius, used the bulk of the material of the New Testament in a revealingly casual manner—authenticated Scriptures were being accepted as authoritative without argument.” If any group voiced uncertainty about a book, it was generally because the group was from a different location or region, and had not had the exposure to it that would allow them to affirm its authenticity. It wasn’t until around AD 140 that a heretic named Marcion challenged the canon (he threw out the entire Old Testament and a lot of the New Testament), which forced church leaders to affirm the authority of both the Old and New Testaments. This confirmation was useful because by AD 170, other “gospels” were appearing (fictional, to be sure). Yet the church had

already established that Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John were the only Gospels with authority. By approximately AD 170, the canon was being translated into other languages, and by AD 190, church leaders were beginning to call it the “New Testament.” Though there were other documents that affirmed the canon of the New Testament, the most important confirmation came at the Council of Carthage (AD 397), which listed the 27 books and proclaimed, “Aside from the canonical Scriptures nothing is to be read in church under the Name of Divine Scriptures.” Manuscript-wise, we are very fortunate to have fragments dating as close as 20 to 30 years from the original work of the apostles, which is utterly astounding. In fact, there is a manuscript containing the majority of Paul’s epistles that dates to just a few decades after Paul would have written them. Though they have earlier manuscripts containing different parts of the New Testament, the earliest complete Bible manuscript (which actually included both the Old and New Tes-

taments) was found in AD 350, and is known as the Codex Sinaiticus. In the archaeological world, this kind of excellent record is virtually unheard of. Frederick Kenyon, a British archaeologist respected for his work concerning ancient texts and languages, concluded, “The Christian can take the whole Bible in his hand and say without fear or hesitation that he holds in it the true Word of God, handed down without essential loss from generation to generation throughout the centuries.” (Please understand that this description of the canonization of the New Testament is a very brief, general summary. However, it represents the inherent truth that our Bible is absolutely reliable and trustworthy.) Can we trust the New Testament as a historical document? Many people do not believe that the Bible is a reliable document of history. But, it is a very very trustworthy historical document. If we were to look at a chart that compared the biblical documents with other ancient documents, we would see that the Bible is in a class by itself regarding the number of ancient copies and their reliability. The Bible is a book of History It could be said that the Bible is a book of history -- and it is. The Bible describes places, people, and events in various degrees of detail. It is essentially an historical account of the people of God throughout thousands of years. If you open to almost any page in the Bible you will find a name of a place and/or a person. Much of this can be verified from archaeology. Though archaeology cannot prove that the Bible is the inspired word of God, it has the ability to prove whether or not if some events and locations described therein are true or false. So far, however, there isn't a single archaeological discovery that disproves the Bible in any way. Nevertheless, many used to think that the Bible had numerous historical errors in it such as Luke's account of Lysanias being the tetrarch of Abiline in about 27 AD (Luke 3:1). For years scholars used this "factual error" to prove Luke was wrong because it was common knowledge that Lysanias was not a tetrarch, but the ruler of Chalcis about 50 years earlier than what Luke described. But, an archaeological inscription was found that said Lysanias was the tetrarch in Abila near Damascus at the time that Luke said. It turns out that there had been two people named Lysanias and Luke had accurately recorded the facts accurately. Also, the walls of Jericho have been found, destroyed just as the Bible says. Many critics doubted that Nazareth ever existed, yet

archaeologists have found a firstcentury synagogue inscription at Caesarea proving it existed. Finds have verified Herod the Great and his son Herod Antipas. The remains of the Apostle Peter's house have been found at Capernaum. Bones with nail scars through the wrists and feet of people who had been crucified have been uncovered demonstrating the actuality of crucifixion. The High Priest Caiaphas' bones have been discovered in an ossuary (a box used to store bones). There is, of course, a host of archaeological digs that corroborate biblical records such as Bethsaida, Bethany, Caesarea Philippi, Capernaum, Cyprus, Galatia, Philippi, Thessalonica, Berea, Athens, Corinth, Ephesus, Rome, etc. For more on this see, Archaeological Evidence verifying biblical events and places. An inscribed stone was found that refers to Pontius Pilate, named as Prefect of Judaea.’ (The New Bible Dictionary, (Wheaton, Illinois: Tyndale House Publishers, Inc.; 1962.) (Luke 3:1), "Now in the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, when Pontius Pilate was governor of Judea..." "A decree of Claudius found at Delphi (Greece) describes Gallio as proconsul of Achaia in ad 51, thus giving a correlation with the ministry of Paul in Corinth (Acts 18:12)." (The New Bible Dictionary) (Acts 18:12), "But while Gallio was proconsul of Achaia, the Jews with one accord rose up against Paul and brought him before the judgment seat." Excavations have revealed a text naming a benefactor Erastus which may be a reference relating to the city-treasurer of (Rom. 16:23). (The New Bible Dictionary) (Rom. 16:23), "Gaius, host to me and to the whole church, greets you. Erastus, the city treasurer greets you, and Quartus, the brother." At Ephesus parts of the temple of Artemis have been uncovered as is mentioned in Acts 19:28-41. Foods That Help Prevent Strokes by Dr. Don Colbert Strokes are responsible for one out of every 18 deaths in the United States. A stroke occurs when a blood clot blocks an artery, or a blood vessel breaks, interrupting blood flow to the brain. Although not all strokes can be prevented, many can. Controllable risk factors for strokes include: • High blood pressure • High cholesterol • Atherosclerosis, or plaque buildup along the walls of arteries • Uncontrolled atrial fibrillation, or chronic irregular heartbeat • Type 2 diabetes • Smoking • Alcohol abuse • Obesity A recent study published by the American Heart Association examined the correlation between strokes and fruit and vegetable consumption. For ten years, the study followed over 20,000 people with no previous signs of heart disease. During the ten years, detailed data was collected on the patients’ diets. The goal of the study was to determine what specific types of fruits and vegetables lower the risk of strokes. Fruits and vegetables were broken into four groups based on color: green, orange/yellow, red/ purple & white. 233 strokes were documented during the study. Green, orange/yellow and red/purple fruits and vegetables showed no relation to stroke. However, people with a high intake of white fruits and vegetables showed a significant 52% lower risk of stroke than people with low intake. Each 25 gram per day increase in

D D S

white fruit and vegetable consumption was associated with a 9% lower risk of stroke. An average apple is 120 grams. Do the math and one apple a day results in a more than 40% lower risk of stroke. The study categorized white fruits and vegetables as apples, pears, bananas, cauliflower, chicory and cucumber. It is important to note that potatoes were not classified as a vegetable, but a starch. Your diet is a critical factor in the prevention of strokes. Exercise, supplementation and medicine (when needed) are also very important. Supplements associated with stroke prevention include: • Fish Oil. Studies show patients with the greatest intake of fish oil have the lowest incidence of stroke. This is likely due to the correlation between high fish oil intake and low arterial plaque. • Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10). Studies show CoQ10 has a positive effect on blood pressure. The Bottom Line: It is no coincidence fruits and vegetables continue to prove beneficial. God designed these powerful foods to nurture and heal our bodies. Processed and fast foods that are manipulated and stripped of their natural powers are “damaged goods.” Continue to eat food in its natural form to decrease your risk for today’s deadliest health problems. © 2016 Dr. Don Colbert, MD PA www.drcolbert.com >

Why Do Men Overeat?

GOOD LISTENER Continued from Page 14

by Dr. Don Colbert The reasons for overeating tend to fall into the same areas for both women and men; however, to help men better understand specifically why they overeat, this article is going to look at those reasons from a “male-centric” point of view. Men who overeat tend to do it in ways that are tied to other activities and behaviors, which means that most men do not realize they are overeating. To discover if you're eating enough for a man twice your size, you need to examine these five eating patterns to determine when, and why, you overeat. (1) Boredom Eating is a visceral, cave man kind of “sensory activity,” and it charges up the senses. Maybe it’s time to find another way to charge up your senses - like a new hobby or interest. (2) Culture Many cultures are all tangled up in social events in such a way that the event isn't fully entertaining unless food is involved. Whether it’s popcorn at the movies, or beer and hot dogs at the game, most

events for men do not involve healthy food. At times like this, when you feel the need to fit in, the best advice is moderation and self control. (3) Stress and Anxiety Stress comes from many sources, and we all need a way to deal with it. Unfortunately, because eating gives you a feeling of control and power, many men deal with stress by eating. Then, combined with the sensory experience of taste and the comfort of a full stomach, they become less aware of the problems they wanted to avoid. It’s emotional eating, and it may sound like a problem more often experienced by women; however, many men also deal with stress by overeating. Realizing that stress is your overeating trigger will lead you to find new - and healthier - ways to deal with stress and anxiety. (4) Quitting an Addiction In giving up an oral addiction (such as smoking or drinking), many people feel the need to keep their hands busy, and eating seems like a harmless solution. While

overeating may feel like the lesser of two evils, there are better ways. Learn from men who improved themselves by quitting the addiction years ago - try doing what they did. (5) To Please Women For many men, this starts in childhood - trying to show your mom that you like her meals by eating all that she provides on the table - and reemerges as a way to show your wife that you like her meals by eating all that she provides on the table. At times like this, men tend to forget that words and communication are just as important. Instead of gorging yourself, try telling her how great her food is. In conclusion, overeating is most often a symptom of an underlying problem, not the cause. Once you realize why you overeat, you can deal with the issue behind your eating habits, and soon you will be on your way to a healthier lifestyle. Financial Straight-Talk by Dave Ramsey www.davesays.com

What’s The Reason For Smallest To Largest On The Debt Snowball? Dear Dave, Why do you recommend paying off your debts from smallest to largest when doing the debt snowball? -Mike Dear Mike, This is a really good question! A lot of people wonder the very same thing when I bring up the subject of the debt snowball. Many folks think paying off the debt with highest interest rate first is the best approach. This seems to make sense mathematically, but I realized a long time ago if those people could do math they wouldn’t be drowning in debt in the first place! Debt is not a mathematical problem, it’s a behavior problem. I’m convinced that personal finance is 80 percent behavior, and only 20 percent head knowledge. The reason the debt snowball pays

off debt from smallest to largest—even though it may be mathematically incorrect—is that modifying your behavior and inspiring your desire to get out of debt is more important than the math. Your probability of becoming wealthy has more to do with your behavior than your financial sophistication or academic pedigree. And besides, I’m a practical application kind of guy—not a theory guy. That’s why my way actually gets people out of debt when lots of other practices fail. When you pay off a small debt it means you’ve experienced success, and that gives you hope. Then, you move on the next larger debt. When you pay that one off—and you’ve wiped out two debts—it really energizes you. At that point you start to believe in yourself and that you’re on the road to becoming debt-free! — Dave

Girlfriend’s Money Problems Dear Dave, I’m fairly

responsible with finances, but my girlfriend is in a terrible financial situation with a lot of credit card debt, an expensive car payment, and a big, fancy apartment. Plus, she just quit her job because she didn’t like it anymore. Now, she’s thinking about filing bankruptcy and thinks us moving in together will help solve her problems. If she can’t handle her finances on her own, what’s going to happen if we get together? Can you help? -Dino Dear Dino, This is someone to keep dating, not marry right now or move in with, and see if she changes her spending habits. You’d have a very tough life being married to this woman, unless she makes some real attitude adjustments where her money is concerned. I can’t say if she’s technically bankrupt, but she definitely needs to move into a cheaper apartment and sell the car for starters. Still, bankruptcy’s not going to solve anything if she’s got a heart problem. By this, I mean if she buys

stuff to try and make her happy and lives beyond her means in the process. Lots of people have the idea that they are what they drive, or they are where they live. Those are heart problems, and that’s the way I was many years ago until I had some sense knocked into me by going broke. Then, I realized I had to stop and make some changes. This doesn’t mean that she isn’t worthy of your love or she’s a terrible person, but it does mean that the girl has got some growing up to do. Money matters aside, you don’t quit your job without a plan unless you’re being sexually harassed or abused, or there’s some matter of principle at stake. Leaving one job for another is okay. But the idea of deciding you just don’t like something, and walking away from it when you’ve got a bunch of bills, is just plain irresponsible. She’s probably not bankrupt, but there are some definite character issues that need to be addressed. Hopefully, you two can work through this together. —Dave

4 Reasons No One Wants to Buy Your Home (and How to Fix It) You’re downright stumped. After months on the market, you’re no closer to a home deal than the day you planted a For Sale sign in the yard. Buyers come. Buyers go. And still no bite. It’s easy to chalk it up to the weather. But we’re here to let you in on a little secret: That may not be the case. Here are four reasons your home may be sitting on the sidelines— and how to get it back in the game. It’s in Bad Shape No one wants to drop six figures on a place that’s dingy around the edges. Every corner and crevice should pass the white-glove test. If you surface cleaned and called it a day, that’s not good enough. Put the wet wipes away and break out the heavy-duty tools. It’s time to scrub your home inside and out! Pay special attention to nitty-gritty details like baseboards, window blinds, ceiling fans and even bathroom caulk. With a little extra elbow grease, you can make your home look like new again. While you’re at it, be sure to tighten loose screws and fix what’s broken. You don’t want any rickety reminders that your home might not be all that and a bag of chips.

It’s Uninviting After a month with no interest— despite a strong market and a desirable location—Elizabeth B. realized her dad’s condo left something to be desired. So she helped him transform his bachelor pad into a place that made buyers want to sit and stay a spell. They started by decluttering all the rooms and applying a fresh coat of neutral paint. Then Elizabeth added a few tasteful accents, including pillows and a throw for the living room and lamps and a new duvet for the master bedroom. By the time they deep cleaned and removed personal items, it was ready for show time. “On the first open house after these changes, I put cookies in the oven so that they were cooling when buyers walked through, and we took the cats with us in the car for a couple hours,” Elizabeth says. “The condo sold within 24 hours of this open house.” It’s Too Pricey We know you love your home and you want to want to make as much money on it as you can. After all, you probably need that cash to fund your next home.

But if your home has never looked better and still won’t sell, you might be asking too much. A price adjustment may be the only thing standing between you and a snappy home deal. Take it from Joe M. A $10,000 price reduction sparked a bidding war among three home buyers. The result? He sold his home within two weeks for $10,000 more than his original asking price! Just keep in mind that there’s no tried-and-true formula for zeroing in on the right price. Every market is different, so it’s best to get a pro’s advice. An experienced real estate agent can show you real numbers buyers have paid for homes like yours in the area. It’s Not a Priority The perfect price and condition don’t mean much if buyers don’t know your home’s there in the first place. Sure, most folks these days may conduct their own online searches. But if your listing isn’t actively being marketed, it’s dying a slow death. That’s why it’s so important to have a high-octane agent on your side. A true go-getter won’t sit back and wait for buyers to come. They

know how to find and reach the best prospects for your home—and they won’t stop until you have a deal! Look, you’re paying your agent thousands of dollars to sell your home. If you’ve done everything in your power to make your home shine and no one’s noticed, it’s time to move on. Look for an agent who’s excited about helping you get top dollar for your home and consistently closes at least 35 transactions a year. That’s a good sign they’ve proven their worth in the business! * For more information on how you can see Dave live, please visit http://www.daveramsey.com/category/events/. Every ministry needs financial support and Changing Times is no different. In addition to running regular donation ads to encourage support from our loyal readers, we occasionally need to write a letter personally asking each of you to search your heart about making a love offering for our ever-needed ministry. Save the Nations Ministries has been producing Changing Times for the last 13 years and we have continued to follow the Lord’s leading in all Christian matters. Though we provide the newspaper at no cost to our 85,000 faithful readers, the expenses to produce and deliver such a quality newspaper are not cheap. We are most grateful to the people who have answered God’s leading in the past and donated to this ministry and we pray that your generosity and loyal support will continue. But, now we are inviting the rest of our readers to join in and help us continue to make a difference in people’s lives as they grow in their Christian walk. There are too many Christians still struggling to find victory in

their life, perhaps even yourself. Changing Times not only educates our Christian readers on how to find the path of victory but also how to stay there. We believe that every Christian is called to help evangelize the world in some way. I would like to echo the words of Paul Washer of Heart Cry Ministries, “there are only two jobs in evangelism, you are either called to go down into the well or you are called to hold the rope for those who go down”. This ministry is not only going down into the well, we are going to the front lines of the battlefield. This ministry has a very large dream that will carry us far into the future. However, the dream will not materialize without the support of obedient people like you who are committed to “holding the rope”. We prayerfully hope that you will join our faithful team of supporters in helping Changing Times continue to Change Lives and spread the Word of God! In His service, Save the Nations Ministries >

PERSONAL REVIVAL

Taking Up the Cross By Andrew Murray When the Lord told his disciples that they must take up the cross to follow him, they could have little understanding of his meaning. He wished to rouse them to earnest thought and so prepare them for the time when they should see him carrying His cross. From the Jordan, where he had presented himself to be baptized and reckoned among sinners, onward, he carried the cross always in his heart. That is to say, He was always conscious that the sentence of death, because of sin, rested on Him, and that He must bear it to the uttermost. As the disciples thought on this and wondered what He meant by it, one thing only helped them - it was the thought of a man, who was sentenced to death, and carried His cross to the appointed place. Christ had said at the same time: 'He that loses his life for my sake shall find it' (Matt. 10.39). He taught them that they must hate their own life. Their nature was so sinful that nothing less than death could meet their need; it deserved nothing less

than death. So the conviction gradually dawned upon them that the taking up of the cross meant: 'I am to feel that my life is under sentence of death, and that under the consciousness of this sentence, I must constantly surrender my flesh, my sinful nature, to death.' So they were slowly prepared to see later on that the cross, which Christ had carried, was the one power to deliver truly from sin, and that they must first receive from Him, the true cross spirit. They must learn from Him what self-humiliation in their weakness and unworthiness was to mean; what the obedience was, which crucified their own will in all things, in the greatest, as well as in the least; what the self-denial was which did not seek to please the flesh or the world. 'Take thy cross and follow me' (see Matt. 16.24; Mark 8.34; 10.21; Luke 9.23) - that was the word with which Jesus prepared His disciples for the great thought that His mind and disposition might become theirs, that His cross might in very deed become their own. Crucified with Christ The lesson, which the Lord wished his disciples to learn from his statement concerning the taking up of the

Luke 10:27

cross and the losing of their life, finds its expression in the words of Paul, after Christ had died on the cross and had been exalted on high, and the Spirit had been poured out. Paul says: 'I am crucified with Christ'; 'God forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world is crucified unto me, and I unto the world' (Gal. 2.20; 6.14). He wished every believer to live, so as to prove that he was crucified with Christ. He wished us to understand that the Christ, who comes to dwell in our hearts, is the crucified Christ, who will Himself, through His life, impart to us, the true mind of the cross. He tells us that 'our old man is crucified with him' (Rom. 6.6). Yea, more, that 'they that are Christ's, have crucified the flesh' (Gal. 5.24). When they received by faith the crucified Christ, they gave over the flesh to the death sentence, which was executed to the full on Calvary. Paul says 'we have been planted together in the likeness of his death' (Rom. 6.5), and that therefore we must reckon that we are dead to sin in Christ Jesus. These words of the Holy Spirit, through Paul, teach us that we must abide constantly in the fellowship

of the cross, in fellowship with the crucified and living Lord Jesus. It is the soul that lives ever under the cover and shelter and deliverance of the cross that alone can expect constantly to glory in Christ Jesus and in his abiding nearness. The fellowship of the cross There are many who place their hope for salvation in the redemption of the cross, who understands little about the fellowship of the cross. They rely on what the cross has purchased for them, on forgiveness of sin and peace with God; but they can often live for a length of time without fellowship with the Lord himself. They do not know what it means to strive every day after heart communion with the crucified Lord, as he is seen in heaven -'A Lamb in the midst of the throne'. Oh, that this vision might exercise its spiritual power upon us, that we might really experience every day that as truly as the Lamb is seen there on the throne, so we may have the power and experience See TAKING UP THE CROSS on Page 35

Here are the guidelines. The main point of the message was: In order for all the saints (you) to do the work of the ministry as the New Testament teaches (Ephesians 4:11, 12; Hebrews 3:12-14; 10:24, 25; Galatians 6:2; James 5:16), you need to gather regularly in smaller forms of togetherness. Here is what I think should characterize all these various forms. 1) They should be small: more than 6-8 will require very long meetings or either someone will stay quiet. 2) They should be regular and frequent: once a week is natural; less than once every two weeks may not build closeness. 3) The series should be of limited duration: set a time when the group will dissolve, at least for awhile. For example, say “Let’s meet once a week through the end of the year, or through May.” Otherwise, groups peter out and you feel guilty. You can always start again. 4) There must be commitment to attend except in emergency. Don’t enter a group until you have counted the cost. 5) There should be accountability to each other: that is, we ought not to feel put out when a group asks if we have followed through on a resolution. 6) The aim of every group should be, in general, the “advancement and joy” of each other’s faith (Philippians 1:25) and the “stirring up” of each other’s love (Hebrews 10:24). No group should view fellowship as an end in itself (though it is precious!). The aim is the transformation of our lives for the sake of winning others to Christ and bringing honor to his name. 7) Every group, whether it involves direct Bible study or not,

FREE ESTIMATES

should be penetrated by biblical consolations and exhortations. It is the Word of God that begets faith. So we must convey it to each other from the heart. 8) Every meeting should include prayer. It would be a contradiction to gather in God’s name and not invoke his presence, plead his help and thank him for his goodness. Brief sentence prayers are better than long, all-inclusive prayers. 9) There should always be opportunity for everyone to talk to others about his concerns. It should not be a lecture time. The Authority of the Son of Man Jesus said in (Luke 6:22, 23) that on the very day when we are hated and rejected and slandered for the sake of the Son of Man we should “rejoice and leap for joy, (think of a little lamb!) For behold, your reward is great in heaven, for so their fathers did to the prophets.” We know from (Luke 13:28) that the prophets were rewarded with admission to the banquet of God’s Kingdom. But what if the Pharisees said to Jesus: “What does the salvation of God’s messengers in the Old Testament and their persecution have to do with the salvation of your disciples and their persecution?” Would not Jesus say, “You’ve answered your own question. When a person is persecuted for my sake, its exactly like being persecuted for God’s sake.” What a claim! The Jesus who said, “Blessed are you who hunger now, for you shall be satisfied,” has the very authority and power of God behind his promise. Is that not a great encouragement to loosen our attachment to things and venture all on the Son of Man? Pastor John ©2016 Desiring God Foundation. Website: www.desiringGod. org. More Than Teaching and Preaching By David Wilkerson I believe the gospel should be accompanied by the power and demonstration of the Holy Ghost— w o r k i n g mighty wonders, proving the gospel is true! Paul boldly stated, “And my speech and my preaching were not with persuasive words of human wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power” (1 Corinthians 2:4). The Greek here means “with proof.” Paul was saying, “I preach the gospel with proof. God and the Holy Spirit are backing me up with signs and wonders!” (Hebrews 2:4) says that God did confirm Paul’s message with signs and wonders: “God also bearing witness both with signs and wonders, with various miracles, and gifts of the Holy Spirit, according to His own will.”

The New Testament believers had one prayer: “That signs and wonders may be done through the name of Your holy Servant Jesus” (Acts 4:30). These apostles went everywhere fully preaching the gospel. “Many wonders and signs were done through the apostles” (Acts 2:43). “And through the hands of the apostles many signs and wonders were done among the people. . . . And believers were increasingly added to the Lord, multitudes of both men and women” (Acts 5: 12, 14). Here is one of the most conclusive of all verses—proving that a fully preached gospel must include signs and wonders: “They stayed there a long time, speaking boldly in the Lord, who was bearing witness to the word of His grace, granting signs and wonders to be done by their hands” (Acts 14:3). This verse says that the apostles ministered boldly for a long time, preaching grace and repentance, and then God granted signs and

When making a trip, we prepare for the road ahead. The Christian life is likened to a road-"the Way" (Acts 19:9, 23), the "narrow road" leading to life (Matthew 7:14), the "highway of holiness" (Isaiah 35:8). If the Christian life is a road, then the Bible is clearly a map, warning us of rugged conditions along the way. Often we hit unexpected bumps, potholes, broken pavement, and detours. Many people are surprised to discover that temptations increase as we more earnestly seek to follow Christ. Even after we have forgiveness through God's abundant grace, we struggle with stubborn sins, addictive habits, and unclean patterns. The apostle Paul himself seemed surprised at how rough the road could be. "I don't accomplish the good I set out to do, and the evil I don't really want to do I find I am always doing. . . . Then he adds, "I thank God there is a way out through Jesus Christ our Lord"(Romans 7:14-25). Do you have a sin that particularly plagues you? Many Christians wrestle with materialism, pride, self-centeredness, laziness, anger, bitterness, sexual lust, envy, gluttony, and lying. How can you claim God's strengthening grace when facing temptations like these? I'm absolutely confident that Christians can live victoriously and walk in the Spirit consistently by taking these steps . . . Offer your body each day as a living sacrifice to God. Take (Romans 12:1-2) seriously: "Present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God . . . and do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind." Consciously give yourselfyour body-to the Lord each day. Ask for the fullness of His Spirit. Contemplate (Ephesians 5:18): "Do not be drunk with wine . . . but be filled with the Spirit." If we walk in the Spirit, we will not fulfill the lusts of the flesh (Galatians 5:16). The Spirit-filled life provides the victory. Memorize verses that speak to your particular weakness. Remember (Psalm 119:11): "Your Word I have hidden in my heart, that I might not sin against You." God's

Word within us helps keep us from sinning against Him. If your problem is your temper, take (Proverbs 29:11) to heart; pride, try (Proverbs 13:10); a sharp tongue, learn (Ephesians 4:29); compulsive shopping and impulsive spending, try memorizing (1 Timothy 6:6-8). Pray for victory. If we abide in Jesus and His Word abides in us, we can ask what we will, and it shall be done for us (John 15:7). When we ask God for holiness and victory, that's a prayer He longs to answer because it's His will. Never give up. Don't underestimate the power of long-term persistence over long-established sins. Sometimes we have failures in the short term; but as we continue to walk with Christ, we grow a little stronger each day. (Proverbs 24:16) says that the wicked fall and stay down, but the righteous get up every time they fall. We may not become perfect in this life, but we can have consistent victory over known sin. "God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it" (1 Cor. 10:13). Confide in a friend or in a small group of believers (Matthew 18:20). The Lord uses others to keep us accountable, to reassure us of victory, and to encourage us as we deal with difficult driving conditions on the old straight and narrow way. God's grace is sufficient over sinpotholes, slippery spots, icy patches, detours, roadblocks, even the drive-by attacks of Satan. We have the road map of grace, the gasoline of grace, the engine of grace, the music of grace on the car radio, and even the air-conditioning of grace. It's all of grace as we journey through life, and we can claim the victory of grace for the trip. As the gospel of John says: "From the fullness of His grace we have all received one blessing after another" (John 1:16 NIV). God's School of Testing - It Can Make You Stronger Than You Ever Thought Possible by Cathy Deaton The finest china in the world is burned at least three times, some of it more than three times. Dresden china is always burned three times. Why does it go through that intense fire? Once ought to be enough; twice ought to be enough. No, three times are necessary to burn that china so that the gold and the crimson are brought out more beautiful and then fastened there to stay. We are fashioned after the same principle in human life. Our trials are burned into us once, twice, thrice; and by God's grace these beautiful colors are there and they are there to stay forever. --Cortland Myers Trials and tests can be tough, and most of the time we try to do everything possible to avoid them. But until you have faced a test and overcome it, you will never know the immense strength God will provide to accomplish something you never thought possible. God purposely sends tests your way by placing situations before you that you can't handle on your own. He wants to teach you to bring the problem to Him first, then seek His guidance as to what you should do. But most of all, He wants you to wait on Him to handle it in the way He desires and in His timing. I didn't understand tests when I was younger. I looked at them as a problem that caused much stress and chaos in my life until I could figure out a way to solve it or get past it. I usually hoped it would just finally go away so I could get back to my safe, comfortable, and even-keel life. I didn't realize that tests were valuable for growth and maturity. If you never have a problem, you will never see the value of running to God for help, strength, and consolation when you need it most. BECAUSE of God's immense

love for me, He sends tests to help me grow and mature into a strong person He can use in whatever way He desires. I have always known that God would give strength when I needed it most. I just didn't realize how much supernatural strength He had given me in a particular situation until the Holy Spirit showed me in a very dramatic way after the test was over. That moment totally changed my thinking about tests and trials. The Holy Spirit revealed to me that as long as I am doing the things that God desires, He will give me all the supernatural strength I need for as long as it takes. But when I decide to step out on my own and handle things, I don't have that supernatural strength from God. It is then that I quickly fall and get beat up by Satan, who is always stronger than me without the Power of God working in and through me. That is why God wants you to put Him first in every area of your life. Even if He tells you to do something hard, He WILL give you the supernatural strength you need ALL DAY EVERY DAY to carry out His Plan. We get off track when we think this life is all about us and what we desire to do with the short amount of time we will live here. What is 75-80 years here on earth compared to an eternity of forever and ever in the presence of God? Do you really want to serve a God that you can order around and force Him to do what you desire? That would be a pitiful and powerless God. He is All-Powerful, Omniscient, Omnipresent, and has already defeated Satan. The next time a hard test comes your way, remember that it's God's Way of stretching, growing, and maturing you to be a powerful Christian He can work through to accomplish what HE desires. It's NOT ABOUT YOU and what you desire, it's ALL ABOUT GOD AND WHAT HE DESIRES for your life! >

THE TRIUMPHANT CHRISTIAN

The Doom of Satan's Lie A strange and mysterious struggle is going on within our world. It affects our whole Society, not for Good but Evil. What is happening? A struggle is going on between God and Satan, Between the Holy Spirit and evil spirits, between Christ and antichrist. The battle is for the total man -- Spirit, Soul and Body. The conflict revolves around two sets of opposites set out in the Bible, the Truth and the lie. We know that Jesus Christ is the truth personified. He said "I am... the truth"(John 14:6). We know further that Satan is the lie personified. Jesus said "When he speaketh the lie he speaketh of his own [self]"(John 8:44). Stated in simple terms, the lie is the denial of God the Creator and the self-deification of the creature. Whenever a created being abandons his Creator, he is controlled by the Lie. At no time in man's earliest history was he without a witness of God (Acts 14:17). The psalmist wrote "The heavens declare the glory of God; the firmament showeth His handiwork. Day unto

day uttereth speech, and night unto night sheweth knowledge. There is no speech nor language where their voice is not heard" (Ps. 19:1-3). But man denied his Creator and deified the created being; he dared to believe he didn't need God (Rom 1:21-23). The true and biblical concept of God as the eternal, selfexistent, omnipotent Creator was exchanged for the false concept that man could become his own god. This is the BIG LIE. But where did it come from? The lie was conceived in the mind of Lucifer, an angel in the spirit world. He was not the devil when the thought first came to him. He was an unfallen angel, one of God's created beings. Lucifer was a creature of rare beauty (Eze. 28:17). He became self-occupied and proud. "I will be like the most High," he said (Isa. 14:14). As far as we know, he was the first created being to reject God and deify himself. In his imagination he did not need God. Satan advanced his new religion by enlisting other angels (Jude 6:2, Peter 2:4). The lie began to spread. But Satan was not content with conquests in the spirit world, so he

(John 8:34). The final form of Satan’s lie will appear in a man called "that man of sin ... the son of perdition" (I thess. 2:3). That devilman is described as one "who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God"(verse 4). If my understanding is correct, the lie will not reach its peak on earth until after the church has been caught up in heaven. Before Satan's man can dominate, the One restraining him will be removed from earth. This is the Holy Spirit (v. 7), who presently indwells the Christian individually and the church as a whole. Once the Holy Spirit is removed, the Lie will do its worst. That period is in the future when the lie dominates the earth, when Satan’s man occupies the rebuilt temple in Jerusalem, claiming to be God, is called in the scripture the Tribulation (Matt. 24:21,29; Rev. 7:14). See DOOM OF SATAN on Page 38

invaded the world of man. The Genesis account of Satan’s assault on earth with the lie is amazing. He began by asking a question which made Eve doubt God's goodness. "Yes, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden," he probed (Gen 3:1). In substance he was asking, "Has God really put restrictions on you? Won't He allow you to have what you want?" He was making God appear severe, unfair. This was his softening-up process in preparation for the lie. And then it came. "For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as Gods, knowing good and evil" (Gen 3:5). This is the lie ... "You don't need God. He'll only tell you what you can and cannot do. Deny Him. Eat the fruit and you will become like God yourself." Satan’s lie led Eve to believe that partaking of what God had forbidden would be rewarding. But was it? Liberty is freedom to do right, not wrong. Our society is under satanic delusion. The person who rejects God's truth and accepts Satan's lie becomes the slave of Sin

SOURCE OF WISDOM Continued from Page 4 True Wisdom Is Divinely Revealed (First Corinthians 2:7) says, "We speak God's wisdom in a mystery, the hidden wisdom, which God predestined before the ages to our glory." The Greek word translated "mystery" doesn't refer to something strange or puzzling; it's a technical term for the kind of truth man has not previously known but is now revealed. The truth that God saves sinners through the substitutionary sacrifice of His Son is now plain for all to see. However, no one can come to that truth by himself because of sin. "A natural man [an unconverted person] does not accept the things of the Spirit of God; for they are foolishness to him, and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually appraised" (1 Cor. 2:14). Divine wisdom can't be empirically deduced by analyzing data and physical evidence (verse 9). It comes only as a gift God gives when His Spirit reveals His Word to individuals. (First Corinthians 2:10) says, "To us God revealed [His truths] through the Spirit; for the Spirit searches all things, even the depths of God." The Holy Spirit-the divine Author of Scripture-searches the

34 Back to School 2016

deep recesses of God's Person and knows the mind of God perfectly. Therefore He is able to reveal God and God's will completely. The Bible contains all the wisdom man needs for solving all the spiritual struggles, problems, and issues of life. Those deep things of God, Paul says, "we also speak, not in words taught by human wisdom, but in those taught by the Spirit, combining spiritual thoughts with spiritual words" (2:13). You have a resident Truth Teacher to enlighten you about essential spiritual truths. The Holy Spirit takes God's Word, the Word He has revealed and inspired, and illuminates it for those in whom He dwells. You can rightly appraise the Word, but only when you rely on the Giver of the Word. Paul concluded, "We have the mind of Christ" (1 Cor. 2:16). You can understand if you are diligent and obedient to study and submit to it. Because it is revealed, its authenticity is guaranteed. Because it is inspired, its accuracy is guaranteed. And because it is illumined, its applicability is guaranteed. Don't turn to human wisdom to solve spiritual problems. As a true believer, anchor all your confidence in the Word of God, the only source of true wisdom. Save the Nations Ministries >

HISTORICAL Continued from Page 18 "Great is Artemis of the Ephesians." "It is known that Quirinius was made governor of Syria by Augustus in AD 6. Archaeologist Sir William Ramsay discovered several inscriptions that indicated that Quirinius was governor of Syria on two occasions, the first time several years prior to this date...archaeology has provided some unexpected and supportive answers. Additionally, while supplying the background behind these events, archaeology also assists us in establishing several facts. (1) A taxation-census was a fairly common procedure in the Roman Empire and it did occur in Judea, in particular. (2) Persons were required to return to their home city in order to fulfill the requirements of the process. (3) These procedures were apparently employed during the reign of Augustus (37 BC–AD 14), placing it well within the general time frame of Jesus’ birth."2 "The historical trustworthiness of Luke has been attested by a number of inscriptions. The ‘politarchs’ of Thessalonica (Acts 17:6,8) were magistrates and are named in five

inscriptions from the city in the 1st century ad. Similarly Publius is correctly designated proµtos (‘first man’) or Governor of Malta (Acts 28:7). Near Lystra inscriptions record the dedication to Zeus of a statue of Hermes by some Lycaonians, and near by was a stone altar for ‘the Hearer of Prayer’ (Zeus) and Hermes. This explains the local identification of Barnabas and Paul with Zeus (Jupiter) and Hermes (Mercury) respectively (Acts 14:11). Derbe, Paul’s next stopping-place, was identified by Ballance in 1956 with Kaerti Hüyük near Karaman (AS 7, 1957, pp. 147ff.). Luke’s earlier references to *Quirinius as governor of Syria before the death of Herod I (Luke 2:2) and to *Lysanias as tetrarch of Abilene (Luke 3:1) have likewise received inscriptional support." (The New Bible Dictionary.) There are many such archaeological verifications of biblical events and places. Is the Bible trustworthy? Absolutely! Remember, no archaeological discovery has ever contradicted the Bible. Therefore, since it has been verified over and over again throughout the centuries, we can continue to trust it as an accurate historical document. >

LIFE OF PURPOSE Continued from Page 36 Do you find yourself making plans without seeking God first? Do you fail to ask Him for guidance in all matters of your life? Don’t make this mistake; each of our steps should be ordered by the Lord. (Psalm 37:23) As you may be aware, a soldier in the armed forces never acts as a free agent. He or she must always wait to receive instruction from the superior officer in charge. Similarly, you must wait to receive your marching orders from God, your CommanderIn-Chief, before you make a move. Only He knows specifically what your divine assignment is, and how you must go about the business of accomplishing it. “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths” (Proverbs 3:5 NKJV). 5. Don’t Forget Your Roadmap.

Would you start out on a journey to an unfamiliar place without a roadmap? Why then, do we seek our purpose without first seeking guidance and direction from the Word of God? As you aim to live with purpose, search the scriptures. All that is essential to the successful completion of your mission is found in the 66 books of the Bible; His Word is the lamp that lights your path. (Psalm 119:105) If you will only follow His leading you’ll be well on your way to living the life of joy, abundance, and fulfillment Christ desires you for you to live. Then you can be confident that you will not be among those escaping through the flames into heaven or "entering heaven unannounced," but among the multitudes who made their calling and election sure, to whom awaits a rich welcome into the eternal Kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ! FRIENDSHIPS Continued from Page 9 relationships. Set boundaries It’s important to draw a few boundary lines for your children as they navigate the waters of boy-girl friendships. Teach them that there are certain discussion topics that should be saved for same-sex friends. For example, it would be inappropriate for a young girl to talk with a male friend about shopping for a bra or getting her period. Those subjects should be saved for “girl time.” The same goes for boys, who should limit conversations about their own body development to “guy time.” Provide practice During the tween years, conver-

sation with anyone can be tough, and talking with the opposite sex can be downright overwhelming. Give your kids an outline for talking to others so they don’t just sit in uncomfortable silence. Tell them that a good rule is to ask a question about the person, then ask a followup question to show they are listening. After that, they can share something about themselves or what they like. Changing Times

Why Should You Live a Life of Purpose? Ask yourself, “Am I just going through the motions from day to day? Have I settled for a meaningless existence without realizing it?” If so, this is not what God desires for you. We are not on earth merely to occupy space, live a mundane life, and go to heaven when we die. There’s much more to God’s plan than that, and our job is to discover what it is. Do you realize that, at some point, every one of us will transition into eternity where all of our works will be tested by fire? It's true. God expects us to live a life centered on pleasing Him and building His Kingdom. Are you on task? If not, I want to jolt you out of your comfort zone and focus you on what's truly important. Time is out for aimlessly wandering through life. You are responsible for your destiny. Have you accepted your high calling? Ask yourself, "Do I want my living to be in vain? Do I want to arrive in heaven bankrupt?" This is what the Bible says will happen to everyone who settles for a meaningless existence. (1 Corinthians 3:12-15) Your life will be empty and hollow if you go through it without discovering and accom-

plishing the purpose for which you where created... and there's just no escaping that fact. Remember, a life absent of purpose is a life devoid of meaning, and a life devoid of meaning is really no life at all. Today, I want to challenge you to aim to live with purpose. Just as the word of the Lord came to the Prophet Jeremiah, it is for you as well: “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you; before you were born I sanctified you…” (Jeremiah 1:5 NKJV) If you’re tired of wasting precious time and are ready to finally embrace your ultimate life’s mission, this article is written especially for you. The specific assignment you are destined to fulfill cannot be completed by anyone else on earth—no matter how gifted, talented, intelligent, or motivated they may be. It has your name on it…and no one else’s. God predetermined the distinct purpose for which He created you and me long before we were even conceived in our mother’s womb. Everyday, we must seek to live life in accordance with our divine calling. (Ephesians 4:1) Before any of us can effectively

launch out on our mission, there are some important steps that must be taken. Below I'm sharing 5 powerful principles that are guaranteed to get you moving along the right path. 1. Get in Proper Alignment. Let me ask you a question: Are you in a position of closeness, commitment, and consistent fellowship with God? If not, you’re out of alignment. He desires to reveal the mysteries of His will, but you must walk closely with Him before you can receive revelation. So draw near to God and follow hard after Him with genuine faith, conviction, and passion. You will then begin witnessing the unfolding of His plan. 2. Understand your Assignment. Why Enter Heaven Unannounced? There are four parts to every assignment God gives you: What is to be done, how it should be done, where it should be done, and when it should be done. Sometimes, God will reveal the how, where, when, and what simultaneously; there are other times, however, when He unfolds His plan in stages. The key is to accept whichever method He chooses and submit to His leading. Most impor-

tantly, until you have a clear understanding of all of the “pieces of the puzzle,” just be still and consult the Lord. 3. Honor God’s Timing. This piggybacks on what I mentioned above. Knowing that God has a set time for the manifestation of His will is not good enough. You must honor and accept His timetable. If you are guilty of being overzealous, impetuous, and impatient, waiting will prove to be very difficult for you. Remember how Abram and Sarai faltered while waiting for the promised child? They devised their own strategy and ended up creating Ishmael, “A son of the flesh.” (Genesis 16; Galatians 4:21-31) Because of their hastiness, they caused undue hardship and conflict in their home. Even after all the commotion, when it was said and done, they still had to wait on the Lord. Then, in His perfect timing Sarah finally gave birth to Isaac, the child of promise. (Genesis 21) 4. USING THE SWORD Continued from Page 3 Scriptures that address the problem and begin to speak them, pray them, and believe them. Speak the Word over Your Situation Are there evil strongholds at the office or warehouse where you work? Is there slander, backbiting, bitterness, or stealing? As Christians, we should take it as a personal insult from the devil when he does this kind of thing in our spiritual domain, and we should go on the offensive against him. Start speaking the Word of God over your fellow employees. When you do this, you do not even have to tell others what you're doing. If there is stealing going on, determine first that this evil will not conquer you, and resolve to always walk in the highest standards of honesty and integrity. Determine that walking in truth and the honor that is befitting of a child of the King is more important than

any promotion or advantage that a little deception may give you. When you see others being taken over by this spirit of cheating or stealing, ask the Lord to give you words to speak over them about how they are going to be standards of integrity and honor, etc. You will see changes. Sometimes it takes a while to tear down especially thick strongholds, but they will come down. We MUST Get Free These are just a couple of brief examples of how we must learn to use the Sword of the Spirit. There are many books that address this subject in a lot more depth and scope. We must get free. We must set all of our brothers and sisters in Christ free, and then we must go after every evil stronghold that the devil has erected to keep mankind in bondage. Let us be found so doing when the Lord returns. It is time to start using the sword that has been given to us! Save the Nations Ministries >

one chance in 1017 of being absolute. The most astounding thing is that Jesus doesn’t only fulfill these eight prophecies, but over 100 prophecies found in the Old Testament! (By the way, this is a very conservative estimate. One website listed 324 fulfilled prophecies!) Imagine the odds of that? It is utterly beyond our comprehension! We know from the document evidence that these prophecies were written even before Jesus was born, and that no amount of human engineering could possibly achieve them. Yet Jesus did—and no one else ever will. So then, how sure can you be that Jesus is the real Messiah? 100 x 10infinity percent. ©2016 oChristian.com. All Rights Reserved >

be sure that Jesus really is the Messiah? Other people died on crosses—how do I know it wasn’t some other guy? Science Speaks professor Peter Stoner looked at the eight prophesies in the Old Testament regarding the place of birth, time of birth, manner of birth, betrayal, manner of death, place of death, public reaction, piercing, and burial of the Messiah. According to Josh McDowell in Evidence that Demands a Verdict, Stoner found that the chance that a man could fit those eight prophecies was 1 in 100,000,000,000,000,000 (1 x 1017). Stoner writes, These prophecies were either given by inspiration of God or the prophets just wrote them as they thought they should be. In such a case the prophets had just one chance in 1017 of having them come true in any man, but they all came true in Christ. This means that the fulfillment of those eight prophesies alone proves that God inspired the writings of those God, and they keep on trying to prophecies to definiteWHAT KIND OF DIRT learn more so they can grow strong ness which lacks only Continued from Page 10 enough to tell other people all about tall, and there was a lot of grain that Him. came from them. DOOM OF SATAN Continued from Page 30 Today it appears that the stage is being set for the coming of Satan's man. Millions are professed worshippers of the Devil. The apostle John writes that in that day of Satan's domination "all that dwell on the earth shall worship him." (Rev 13:8) Refusal to worship him will bring the penalty of death. Satan will have reached the zenith of his earthly power. We have a foretaste in America and elsewhere of these things to come. Many have accepted Satan's lie. They defend indecent and immoral behavior as an acceptable way of Life. And conditions will become increasingly worse. Before the climax the world will see a time when the lie will be suppressed. Speaking through the apostle John the Holy Spirit reveals that Satan will one day be imprisoned for a thousand years. This is the period referred to as the Millennium. During this wonderful era Christ will reign in person from Jerusalem. The moral and social ills which now plague society will be unknown because, for the time, the lie will be held in check and the truth will reign. All men will know beyond a shadow of a doubt that the lie has been responsible for all social and moral evil. At the close of the Millennium, Satan will be loosed (Rev. 12:7). His thousand years of incarceration will not have changed him, nor will the thousand years of Christ's reign have changed the heart of man.

cipleship – As a pastor I often have individuals approach me with a question about how to minister to their children or spouse in a specific area. Usually they are concerned about a particular sin or struggle in their family member’s life. In this way we serve as firefighters rushing to extinguish this issue or that. At times this is needed, but it should not be our regular course of action. Systematic discipleship is a much better approach and is aided by family worship. Daily family worship will provide a strong foundation that is built upon hearing the Word daily, praying daily, and giving thanks daily. It takes time to build a strong house. It is an unsteady house that is the

Thus Satan will "go out to deceive the nations which are in the earth"(Rev 20:8), and many will follow him. Here is the final rebellion of Satan and man against God. It will demonstrate that, even under the most favorable of conditions, some men will follow the lie and not the truth if left to their own choice. But Satan’s freedom will be short-lived. John writes "And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and they shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever" (Rev 20:10). The lake of fire has been prepared for the devil and His angels (Matt 25:41). He will not be annihilated, but will remain alive and conscious for all eternity. What a tragic end for the one who was once "the anointed cherub!" Hell is both a place and a state of fire and brimstone, of Conscious torment. It is the place where all must go who reject the truth. "and whosoever was not found written in the book of Life was cast into the lake of fire" (Rev 20:15) Christ, the truth, is also the life. Satan, the lie, is the destroyer of life, a murderer. God's desire for man is that he possess eternal life; Satan’s design for man is that he suffer eternal death. It is a life and death struggle - the truth verses the lie. Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved. (Acts 16:31) Save the Nations Ministries >

result of the carpenter running from shaky wall to shaky wall to hammer a nail in here or there. 11. Provides Generational Testimony – One of the greatest benefits of family worship is the actual passing on of our faith to the next generation. We are teaching our children how to read the Scriptures, pray, confess their sins, sing unto God, and more. Our children will leave the home with memories of this daily worship. They will have learned by watching and participating how to search the Bible, intercede for their future children, and rejoice in God. And by God’s grace and mercy they will carry it to the next generation of our families. Copyright © 2016 Grace Online Library >
