chool Performance is both a spectacle and celebration. As we applaud the nearly 500 students who perform on the McCaw Hall stage today, we recognize that there are nearly 500 stories unfolding, with one more chapter completed. Fifteen of our Professional Division students are headed for jobs next year. Amy Young toddled into PNB as a Creative Movement student at the age of five and now leaves us to become an apprentice with the Royal Winnipeg Ballet. Anders Southerland (Level VIII) came to us through DanceChance in the third grade and now joins the Houston Ballet’s second company. Others head to companies around the world and colleges across the country, and many will return in the fall, back from an exciting summer course in a distant city. A few will mark this performance today as the closing of a chapter, as life, sports, academics, and other interests pull them away from the demands of studying ballet. Whether our students have been with us for one year or fifteen, they will carry ballet and PNBS with them for the rest of their lives. The unseen performers number in the hundreds, too, and include our devoted faculty members, who bring inspiration and experience to the studio every day, tirelessly sculpting feet and lengthening necklines in pursuit of the aesthetic of pure classical ballet. Their partners in every class are the accompanists, who contribute to a refined education in musicality. Our School staff, numbering no more than a dozen, checks on injury status, attendance, scheduling, and communication every day for over 1,000 students and their families. Add in our Costume Shop, stage crew, marketing and development departments, and an incredibly devoted Education Committee, and we have a School Performance. It certainly takes a village or perhaps a major metropolis.

“School Performance is both a spectacle and celebration. ” With this year’s School Performance, we also bid farewell to a treasured member of our PNBS family. Tim Lynch joined PNB as an apprentice in 1993 and danced as a member of the Company for a decade, after which time he became part of our faculty. Tim has been so much more than a teacher for so many boys who were introduced to ballet through his classes. He’s been the reason they dance and push and succeed. These dedicated young students are such a source of pride for all of us at the School. When the curtain rises this afternoon on the men’s dance, think of Tim’s unbelievable dedication, patience, and belief in our boys. Tim has also taught almost every level in the School, worked with our Outreach and Education programs, choreographed for REACH, taught at Cornish College of the Arts, earned a Masters in Fine Arts from the University of Wisconsin, and founded, performed in, and directed Seattle Dance Project. With a list like that, you’d think he’d be ready to retire, but Tim’s only just beginning. This summer, he and his family are headed for Columbus, Ohio, where Tim will be the Director of the Academy for BalletMet. We’ll miss the whole Lynch clan that has been such a welcome and familiar presence on our stage and in our studios for the past two decades, but we wish them only the best in this exciting new chapter in their lives. Administrative Director Notes s the curtain goes up on our 33rd Annual School Performance, it is a time of celebration as we mark the end of school year. This has been another exceptional year for the School. As our upper level students secure jobs and accept offers from prestigious universities, I am continually impressed with our students’ high level of commitment to their ballet training and their academics. Whether spending numerous hours in the studio and/or doing homework, our students know that hard work brings rewards. Their achievements make the hour- to- hour, day- to -day business of running a ballet school worth every second. The School Performance encompasses all that is traditional and reassured in ballet education. It is a rite of passage for the youngest Level I students, as they experience the thrill of performing on the McCaw Hall stage for the first time. Students in the middle levels look forward to presenting their progress each year through increasingly complex choreography and upper level students proudly demonstrate the results of many years of training. Pacific Northwest Ballet School is once again honored to be collaborating with the Seattle Youth Symphony Orchestra. Working with an orchestra enriches the performance experience for both the students and the audience. The relationship between the musicians and dancers is a valued educational experience. We look forward to our continued partnership. It is an honor to work with our wonderful staff, professional and dedicated faculty and gifted accompanist s. I think I speak for all of us in the School: when I say that it is with enormous pride and gratitude that we share each lesson, each conversation and each triumph with your children. Ours is the daily pleasure and privilege to experience their growth, humor, maturity and developing passion for this art form. Let me express heartfelt thanks to all our families and friends for being here and for your supporting our beautiful students.

HighLights 2013–2014 International Summer Exchange Students

Ailey American Dance Theater dancer Vernard J. Gilmore and studied with guest artists in AfroBrazilian, hip hop, and modern.

Six PNBS students were selected by School faculty to train on exchange this summer at three elite ballet schools: Canada’s National Ballet School, the Royal Danish Ballet School, and the Palucca School Dresden in Germany. Charlotte Nash and Kuu Sakuragi will represent PNBS at the National Ballet School in Toronto, Ontario. Established in 1959, NBS is one of the world’s foremost training institutions providing dance training, academic instruction, and residential care on one campus. The summer exchange program, started by Francia Russell and NBS artistic director Mavis Staines, is in its sixteenth year. This is the eighth year that the Royal Danish Ballet and PNB will exchange dance students. Abigail Diedrich and Nicole Rizzitano, selected for the Flemming Halby Dance Student Exchange Program between PNBS and the Royal Danish Ballet School, will travel to Copenhagen for the Royal Danish Ballet School’s program. The exchange, made possible by Support from scan|design Foundation by Inger and Jens Bruun and the Northwest Danish Association, was initiated in honor of Flemming Halby, longtime PNBS faculty member and former Royal Danish Ballet dancer. Angeli Mamon and Amanda Morgan are participating in the sixth summer exchange with the Palucca School Dresden in Germany. Founded in 1925 by Margarethe Palucca, the Palucca School Dresden is the only independent college for dance in Germany. The school offers year-round training and performance opportunities with the Dresden Semperoper Ballet. Canadian-born Jason Beechey, a former PNBS Summer Course student, has been the rector of the college since August 2006.

Two DanceChance graduates joined professional dance companies. Ken Mankin (DanceChance 2002 from Daniel Bagley Elementary) joined Kansas City Ballet II. Anders Southerland (DanceChance 2005 from Kimball Elementary) will join Houston Ballet II.

Students Dazzle on the Mainstage Students joined the Company in Nutcracker, The Sleeping Beauty, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and Giselle as pages, bugs, garland dancers, and of course soldiers, mice, party girls and boys this season. Over 300 roles were danced by the students of Pacific Northwest Ballet School, dazzling audiences all season long.

“There are many reasons that we are all so happy for our son to participate in DanceChance: incredible training in a rich and demanding art form, opportunities to see and hear performances of the highest caliber, incentive to work harder in school.” Parent, Graham Hill Elementary DanceChance congratulates graduating seniors: Alexa Domenden, Jordan Murphy, Bella Ureta and Anders Southerland.

Community Education Programs Pacific Northwest Ballet’s Community Education programs partnered with over 60 public schools to bring dance education to over 21,000 students and teachers this season! Community Education programs are offered at low or no cost through various programs, including in-school residencies, student matinees, and behind-the-scenes fieldtrips to the Phelps Center. PNB also launched a new Family Engagement Program in 2013. This initiative allowed over 400 DISCOVER DANCE students and their families to attend PNB performances and events through funding from DanceUSA. Winter Wonderland Ball

PNBS Summer Exchange students: Nicole Rizzitano, Abigail Diedrich, Kuu Sakuragi, Charlotte Nash, Amanda Morgan, Angeli Mamon.

Petite Finales Three hundred and fifty of PNBS’ youngest students danced for family and friends in the annual Petite Finale performances, held in May at the Phelps Center in Seattle and the Francia Russell Center in Bellevue. Petite Finale performances introduce Creative Movement and Pre-Ballet students (age five to seven) to performing in front of an audience. After demonstrations of classroom work and performing individual class pieces inspired by The Sleeping Beauty, the young dancers were treated to performances by Professional Division students. Following the performances, proud parents snapped photos during a reception hosted by the PNBS Parents’ Association.

Teen Night

NEXT STEP

Summer Course 2013

This year’s teens-only event was a night to remember! Young patrons stepped inside the PNB studios with Artistic Director Peter Boal for a private studio rehearsal of NEXT STEP works created by Company dancers for Professional Division students. The night included six world premieres with fabulous dancing, live music from Ezra Thompson, a lively Q&A session, and a reception with the choreographers and dancers. Plus, epic photo booth snaps with our teen guests and members of the Company. We’re looking forward to next year already!

This annual choreographic showcase celebrates PNB’s commitment to new works and emerging talent. Just yesterday, the next generation of dance artists took center stage at McCaw Hall. This year’s program featured PNB School’s Professional Division students in an all-premiere lineup created just for them by Company dancers Andrew Bartee, Jahna Frantziskonis, Angelica Generosa, Margaret Mullin, Matthew Renko, Price Suddarth, and Ezra Thomson. Featuring the musicians of Seattle Youth Symphony Orchestra.

In summer of 2013, PNBS welcomed 227 students, ages 12-18 from 41 states, and Bulgaria, Canada, France, Germany, Portugal, and Spain for a fiveweek intensive summer course. We look forward to welcoming this summer’s students on July 7.

DanceChance Grads Meet Misty Copeland American Ballet Theatre (ABT) soloist Misty Copeland is making ballet news! Her book, Life in Motion: An Unlikely Ballerina was an instant New York Times bestseller; she’s travelled coast to coast sharing her story and inspiring young dancers. Misty is the first African American soloist in two decades to dance at ABT. This September, four DanceChance graduates were treated to front row seats at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation’s At the Heart lecture series, where Misty talked about her training and career. Following the lecture, the students met privately with Misty to talk ballet and snap photos.

Sylvia

Act III

Music: Léo Delibes

(excerpts from Sylvia, ou la Nymphe de Diane, 1876)

(Piano Concerto No. 2 in G Major, Op. 44, 1879)

Choreography: George Balanchine

Staging: Dana Hanson Costume Design: Martin Pakledinaz Lighting Design: Randall G. Chiarelli Premiere: June 25, 1941; American Ballet Caravan (Rio de Janeiro) PNB Premiere: November 4, 1997 A sumptuous tutu ballet, with a hierarchical cast, a brilliant courtly atmosphere and fluent references to Swan Lake, Ballet Imperial, in Balanchine’s words, is “a contemporary tribute to Petipa, ‘the father of the classic ballet,’ and to Tchaikovsky, his greatest composer.” It is set to Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 2 in G. Ballet Imperial has gone through a number of metamorphoses since its creation. One of the most significant is the change of title from Ballet Imperial to Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto No. 2, which Balanchine effected for a 1973 production by New York City Ballet. That change was accompanied by the replacement of tutus with simple chiffon dresses and the elimination of all scenery. PNB’s production is based on the 1964 version of New York City Ballet, which Francia Russell notated as Ballet Mistress and staged for the PNB premiere in 1997. Notes by Jeannie Thomas, edited (LC)

Lighting Design: Randall G. Chiarelli Original Production Premiere: May 25, 1870; Paris Opera Ballet, choreography by Arthur Saint-Léon Professional Division students rehearsing Sylvia. © Lindsay Thomas.

Pacific Northwest Ballet Company dancer Kyle Davis has a vision for a full-length production of Sylvia that began when he first heard the famous Act One fanfare on his car radio one afternoon in 2010. That night, he found an entire recording of the ballet and was “blown away” listening to it. He continued his research and learned that Sylvia, the second full-length ballet by French composer Léo Delibes, followed six years after the triumph of his 1870 Coppélia, and while many choreographers have since tackled the score—including England’s Frederick Ashton and Germany’s John Neumeier—no definitive version has yet been made. Kyle began by choreographing the Act Three pas de deux for PNB’s Next Step in 2012, then followed with the fanfare and waltz from Act One in 2013. This year, he’s tackling the whole of Act Three. Kyle’s choreography is based on classical technique. Music and narrative are important elements, although in presenting Act Three on its own, he has modified the story slightly by omitting the villain Orion, who interrupts the festivities of the act just before the end of the ballet. Looking ahead to one day presenting Sylvia in its entirety, Kyle hopes to align the story of Sylvia, nymph of Diana, and her love, the shepherd Aminta, more closely to the original play by Torquato Tasso (1573). The costuming is not what Kyle originally imagined. While working to find designs that fit his ideal, choreographer Crystal Pite (Emergence) suggested finding something completely different while keeping choreography the same. The result is a classical ballet dressed in contemporary formal wear—a demonstration of the versatility of ballet and the transcendence of its classical technique. Notes by Doug Fullington.

SYLVIA made possible by the PNB Education Committee Thank you! PNB Education Committee members generously provided support for the premiere of Sylvia choreographed by PNB Company member, Kyle Davis, for the Professional Division students to dance at the School Performance. The premiere of this new ballet will be accompanied by the Seattle Youth Symphony Orchestra. The PNB Education Committee is comprised of Trustees and Advisory Board members; this is the seventh year it has provided support to fund a new work for the Professional Division students. Thanks to Dr. Joe G. Norman Jr., Connie & Thomas Walsh, Greg Kusnick & Karen Jo Gustafson, Aya Hamilton & Drew Welk, and Mimi Richards for their generosity.

NEXT STEP Support NEXT STEP is one of the most innovative performances of the season, showcasing the choreographic talents of PNB Company dancers. PNB Advisory Board member Glenn Kawasaki has sponsored Next Step since its inception and returns as the leading sponsor of Next Step 2014. Glenn believes strongly in the performance and the opportunity it provides both to the choreographers and to the PNBS students who perform their work. In addition to Glenn’s important support, several other donors have stepped forward to sponsor the individual works of the choreographers. PNB thanks Bill Aubuchon, Michael W. Dabney, Joan Fitzmaurice, W. Daniel Heidt & Michele B. Heidt, Roy L. Hughes, H. David Kaplan, Carol & Paul Neiman, Dr. Joe G. Norman, Jr., Ms. Jodi Wong, and contributors to PNB’s Power2Give campaign. ArtsWA and National Endowment for the Arts also provided support.

Thanks Mr. Lynch! I have been going to Mr. Lynch’s class since I was 5. I am 10 now. What I learned from him is that ballet is super fun and cool, but you have to pay attention! If you don’t pay attention, you will be doing tendus and everyone else is doing pirouettes or something like that. My favorite part of class is jumping. We do other cool things in class, but jumping is the coolest actually, but everyone knows that in my class. Mr. Lynch is really funny sometimes. We used to do a puppet thing in Creative Movement and he would be a puppet. It was really cool because he is a really good puppet.

Hundreds of boys have been introduced to the world of ballet through Mr. Lynch’s DanceChance class. Many come to DanceChance very uncertain about the “manliness” of ballet. But many leave inspired, enthusiastic, and passionate about dancing. Tim’s teaching reaches the competitive spirit of young boys, nurturing in them a sense of pride in their abilities. He has the ability to not only harness their incredible energy, but also to turn it into something spectacular. His place as a role model for young boys from Seattle’s widely diverse community will be irreplaceable. —Jennifer McLain, DanceChance Manager

—Jack Neeleman, Level II

During my time at PNB, Tim Lynch was a huge influence on my ballet training. As my first male teacher, Mr. Lynch was able to inspire me in the studio. I remember thinking to myself, “Man, I want to be able to do that”, after watching him demonstrate a turning combination. Through the years, I learned many things from Mr. Lynch. One thing that stuck with me is to always embrace challenges. Each of his classes would include something tricky, whether it be a tendu combination with changing arms on different counts or a reversed petite allegro. Tim would always encourage us to keep going. One day after class, he had me try double tours for the first time. The thought of it seemed impossible, but after seeing him jump with ease, I mustered up the determination to land one for myself. It took a couple years of hard work, but eventually I was able to do it. This idea of embracing challenges has proved beneficial in other areas of my life. As a sophomore in college, I am constantly learning difficult topics and it really helps to have the determination I picked up from Mr. Lynch. I just wanted to thank Tim for all that he has taught me. Ballet Met has got a good one. Congratulations!

Mr. Lynch has helped me become the dancer I am now. He has always helped our class 100% every time he walks into the studio. Mr. Lynch sees the potential that we can’t see in ourselves. I am still surprised how he finds time to teach our class and choreograph, even though he has his own company. His classes have always pushed me to my limits and beyond. Ballet has helped me find who I am and how much am I willing to push myself. I will miss the way he choreographs our School performance, which is never easy and always challenging. I remember when I first took his class. I was very quiet and nervous, but he made the class feel very welcome. Tim made me feel like I was adopted into a warm accepting family, as others call it PNB. Whenever I perform, I feel like I am expressing myself in a way that I cannot explain to others. Thank you, Tim Lynch, for making me the dancer I am now. I would have never made it here without you. —Kuu Sakuragi, Level VIII

“Thank you, Tim Lynch, for making me the dancer I am now. I would have never made it here without you.” During the April 3 Parents Watch Day, I heard Mr. Lynch say to Kyler and his class before they demonstrated a move, “Prepare for greatness.” We loved hearing that, for it encapsulates perfectly what DanceChance is all about on so many levels: the performance of the exercise, the boys’ sense of self-worth, a call for embracing a high level of achievement. —DanceChance Parent, Broadview-Thomson K–8

—Nathaniel Solis, 2012 Level VIII Graduate

Tim Lynch introduced me to the world of dance when I was 9 years old. He was my very first ballet teacher while I was in the DanceChance program. Throughout 10 years of ballet training, I often had doubts and insecurities regarding my commitment in pursuing a dancing career, but I am so thankful for Tim’s constant encouragement and support, which have had a big impact on my own confidence in ballet and in life. —Levi Teachout, Level VIII
