Coit Tower

The Golden Gate Bridge is #1 on every visitor's list. Once called “the bridge that couldn’t be built,” today the Golden Gate Bridge is one the seven wonders of the modern world. The 1.7-mile-long bridge is anchored by towers that reach 746 feet skyward and was once taller than any building in San Francisco! Pedestrians and bicyclists are welcome daily. 415-921-5858 I GoldenGate.org

Coit Tower, a slender white concrete column rising from the top of Telegraph Hill, has been an emblem of San Francisco’s skyline since its completion in 1933, a welcoming beacon to visitors and residents alike. Its observation deck, reached by elevator (tickets can be purchased in the gift shop), provides 360-degree views of the city and bay, including the Golden Gate and Bay bridges. 1 Telegraph Hill Blvd. 415-249-0995

Alcatraz

Lombard Street

Alcatraz was the site of the first lighthouse in the Western United States but became a federal penitentiary from 1934 to 1963. Now, this once infamous prison island is part of the Bay Area’s 80,000-acre Golden Gate National Recreation Area. Located one-and-a-half miles from Fisherman’s Wharf, Alcatraz is one of the city's most popular attractions. 415-981-7625 (To buy tickets through Alcatraz City Cruises) I NPS.gov/Alcatraz

Cable Cars There is nothing quite like riding a cable car up and down the hills of San Francisco. While they symbolize the early innovation that made the city iconic, the experience of riding a cable car is timeless. These right-out-of-the-Smithsonian cable cars were named a national historic landmark in 1964. Cable Car Hours: 7 AM – 10:30 PM 7 days a week. Current fare is $8 one way, or an all-day pass for $17. 415-701-2311

Painted Ladies Along the eastern side of Alamo Square Park is one of the most iconic and most photographed sights in San Francisco. These pastel-colored homes, standing shoulder-to-shoulder on the gentle slope of Steiner Street, are called the Painted Ladies. 415-974-6900 (General San Francisco Travel number)

The cheery ringing of the cable car bells; the sights, sounds and smells along busy Jefferson Street; the renovated historic red-brick factories; the steaming street-side pots of Dungeness crab—all help make Fisherman’s Wharf the city’s top-rated tourist attraction year after year. 415-673-3530 I FishermansWharf.org

Known as the “Crookedest Street in the World,” Lombard Street is one of San Francisco’s most popular landmarks. Every year, millions of visitors walk or drive down its eight sharp hairpin turns. Surrounded by Russian Hill mansions and perfectly manicured landscaping and flowers, it is also one of the city’s most scenic streets. Take a spectacular photo at the bottom looking up or enjoy the breathtaking view from the top looking out onto the San Francisco Bay, the Bay Bridge and Coit Tower.

Sonoma County An easy hour’s drive north of San Francisco on Hwy. 101, Petaluma is a great vacation destination hub with convenient access to many of Sonoma County’s best experiences in every direction. There are the oyster shacks of Tomales Bay, the rugged Sonoma coast line and Bodega Bay to the west, the redwoods of Russian River to the north, and over 400 wineries in historic towns like Healdsburg, Sonoma, Sebastopol, Santa Rosa and Guerneville. Sonoma County is waiting and Petaluma is your front door. Come on up!

Napa Valley Napa County is north of San Francisco, in California. It's known for hundreds of hillside vineyards in the Napa Valley wine region. In the city of Napa, Oxbow Public Market features regional gourmet food. The Napa Valley Wine Train is a vintage locomotive and traveling restaurant running through the valley. 707-226-5813 I VisitNapaValley.com

San Francisco Zoo Nestled against the Pacific Ocean, the San Francisco Zoo is an urban oasis. It is home to over 2,000 exotic, endangered and rescued animals representing more than 250 species and lovely peaceful gardens full of native and foreign plants. 415-753-7080 I SFZoo.org
