2021 Carousel Ball Honorary Co-Chairman

Dear Friends, Welcome. Welcome. Welcome to the 35th Annual Carousel Ball, an evening celebrating the Children’s Diabetes Foundation and the Barbara Davis Center for Diabetes. I am so happy to see everyone come together and I thank you all for coming out of your homes and joining us for this special evening. Your support during the past two years has been so greatly needed; funds have been stretched to the limits and we find that so many of our patients are uninsured or underinsured. It truly means so much to me that you have continued to fight with us against diabetes when the world has given so much of a focus on COVID-19. The pandemic has left people all over the world in dire need, and tonight we are gathered together to support the 35 million Americans who suffer with diabetes and over 350 million people worldwide. With all of us together, we will win this fight against this dreaded disease and one day, soon, we will find the cure. When Marvin and I were given the news that our seven-year-old daughter, Dana, had been diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, we had no knowledge of this disease and all its terrible complications. Treatment was in another state and getting there was difficult. We thought about the thousands of families facing this daunting journey, and Marvin asked if I would like to create the Barbara Davis Center for Diabetes here in Denver to help all the children with type 1 diabetes. With the help of so many wonderful, generous and caring friends, we began a lifelong commitment. It is now 44 years later, and the Barbara Davis Center for Diabetes is thriving. We have the best doctors, the best researchers, the best treatment and care for the over 7,600 patients who come from all over the world. We treat everyone, regardless of their financial status. Care is available to all and we welcome each and every patient with open arms. I know how proud Marvin would be of all the advances that have been made and with the dedication of our nurses, social workers, and informed staff. They have eased the burden of care through life-changing technology. Now, having type 1 diabetes is not as intimidating and the cure is within reach. The Barbara Davis Center is working on stem cell research that will one day cure the hundreds of millions of people around the world who have diabetes and so many other autoimmune diseases. This is only possible because of the people in this room tonight. We are so proud and excited to honor Shelley and Steve Lucas this evening with the High Hopes Tribute Award. They have been loyal friends and supporters of CDF and The Guild for many years. Steve has a personal interest as he is type 1 himself. Shelley and Steve have been tireless volunteers, sharing their time, talent and knowledge of managing a chronic illness while giving others their insight to maintain hope that anyone can experience a life well-lived with type 1 diabetes, their passion as leaders of the community, along with being great philanthropists precedes them. I am so pleased to have them here with us. The recipients of this year’s Founder’s Award are dear friends, Julie and Dan Feiten, and have brought to us their knowledge, commitment, expertise, and determination in finding a cure for diabetes. Julie and Dan have three type 1 diabetic sons, I am so proud to recognize them as our honorees. Dan is a very popular pediatrician in Denver and co-founder of Greenwood Pediatrics, a 24-hour provider practice. He has also served on the Board of the Children’s Diabetes Foundation for the past 9 years and we are delighted to present this award to he and Julie. Taking the stage this evening is the legendary REO Speedwagon. Their music has been the background of most of our lives and their incredible energy, spirit, warmth and amazing talent will rock the room. I thank our honorees and performers from the bottom of my heart for their generosity, their time, and their commitment in joining our fight and reaching for the Brass Ring – we will make the dream of a cure turn into reality. With love, many thanks and appreciation,

Barbara Davis Founder, Barbara Davis Center for Diabetes and Children’s Diabetes Foundation

Dana Davis

Dear Friends,

2021 Carousel Ball Chairman

I am so excited to welcome you to the 35th Carousel Ball. Tonight is extra special because we come together in person, for the first time in over 18 months, to support and celebrate the families and community who are affected by type 1 diabetes. The world has taken a dramatic shift since the last time we were all together in person. The COVID-19 pandemic has stressed our doctors, patients, and hospitals to the limit. The Barbara Davis Center for Diabetes is one of the largest centers in the world specializing in type 1 diabetes research and care for over 7,600 children and adults with this terrible disease. 40% of the patients at the BDC are under or uninsured, and 35% are at or below poverty level. There is an urgent need for mental health providers, as type 1 patients are twice as likely to suffer from depression. Having you all here tonight means so much to me, my family, and all those suffering with type 1 diabetes. In 1977 my mother, Barbara Davis, and my late father, Marvin Davis, created the Barbara Davis Center for Diabetes to bring world-class care to Colorado and the Children’s Diabetes Foundation to breathe life into that dream. The Foundation has proudly supported the Center for more than forty years, and it has been so exciting to see my parents’ dream become a reality. I have the honor of working with the remarkable doctors, researchers, and staff at the Barbara Davis Center, and am in constant awe of their talents and abilities. Their passion for their patients, commitment to improving lives, curiosity for understanding this disease, and dedication to finding a cure for diabetes are a unique combination that makes them the go-to center for diabetes care and research. We have come a long way in these forty plus years, but there is still work to be done! This evening we honor Steve and Shelley Lucas, two of Colorado’s most caring, compassionate, and dedicated people and philanthropists. Steve was diagnosed with type 1 at 27 years old, and both he and Shelley were stunned when given the diagnosis. Shelley was first acquainted with the Children’s Diabetes Foundation when she began searching for ways to cope with type 1 diabetes. She and Steve became immediate fixtures at CDF. Since then, Shelley has given her time and talents to the Foundation in countless ways, serving not only as Guild President but also twice as Spring Brass Ring chair! Her tireless efforts for The Guild and vibrant energy have brought a special skillset and love to all of our events. Steve serves on the CDF Board and volunteers with and supports the Children’s Diabetes Foundation in numerous ways. Steve’s positive outlook in mentoring youth and helping them to manage life with diabetes has given him his greatest joy. He believes that living with and managing a chronic illness forces one to empathize with others in ways they may not have otherwise. It is with great pleasure that we present them with the High Hopes Tribute Award. Their time, generosity, and friendship have changed so many lives, and their positive spirit rings hope that anyone can experience a life well-lived with type 1 diabetes. Tonight, the Founder’s Award will be given to Dr. Dan Feiten and his unstoppable wife, Julie, who have three type 1 sons of their own. Jonny, Ben, and Gabe were each diagnosed when they were under two years of age, with Ben and Gabe being diagnosed within months of one another. Julie has given hope to not only her own children but countless other families who have needed guidance and direction when diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. She created training materials for parents, teachers, and coaches so children with type 1 could thrive in school sports and other activities. Dr. Dan Feiten has served on the Children’s Diabetes Foundation Board of Directors for the past nine years. As a pediatrician, Dan has focused on improving the lives of the many children with type 1 diabetes in his practice, and Julie has often offered herself as a personal resource to parents of newly diagnosed kids with T1D. I could not imagine anyone else more deserving of the Founder’s Award! Your support for The Carousel Ball tonight and your loyal generosity throughout the year is essential to finding a cure for diabetes. As our researchers learn more about this complicated disease, we get closer and closer to providing a new opportunity for the families that have been fighting for their lives. Whether they have been affected by diabetes for weeks, months, years, or decades, I know that we are giving them hope. The evening wouldn’t be complete without our amazing performers, and Children’s Diabetes Foundation is so excited to have rock superstars REO Speedwagon here to help raise awareness and funds for type 1 diabetes and to make this a night to remember! We also want to thank our emcees for the evening, Dominic Garcia and Michelle Griego. Your sparkling personalities are such a wonderful addition to this incredible night. I thank each of you for being a part of this special evening with the Children’s Diabetes Foundation and the Barbara Davis Center for Diabetes, and for your overwhelming support throughout the years. Together we are providing patients the best chance for a healthy today and hope for tomorrow. With sincere appreciation, Dana Davis Executive Director, Children’s Diabetes Foundation

Steve & Shelley Lucas

2021 Recipients of the High Hopes Tribute Award Steve and Shelley Lucas will be presented with the High Hopes Tribute Award at The Carousel Ball in honor of their more than a decade of service and support of the Children’s Diabetes Foundation.

S teve and Shelley Lucas will be presented with the High Hopes Tribute Award at The Carousel Ball in honor of their more than a decade of service and support of the Children’s Diabetes Foundation.

Steve and Shelley Lucas do not have your “typical” type 1 story. Most people with this disease are diagnosed in childhood or adolescence. When Steve was diagnosed in his twenties, both of them were initially blindsided by the diagnosis. However, ever the optimist, when Steve lamented, “why me?” Shelley replied, “why not you?” She immediately began searching for a way to make things easier for him. Of course, neither knew how to handle this new challenge in their lives, but Shelley knew she could find a community of people that would – which led her to the Children’s Diabetes Foundation. From the moment she attended her first Guild meeting, Shelley felt like she was at home. In her decade-plus of involvement with the Guild of the Children’s Diabetes Foundation, she has served as Guild president, chaired the record-breaking fundraising 2019 Spring Brass Ring Luncheon, and volunteered for the Run for the Ring, Boo Bash, and countless other CDF events. For her entire adult life, Shelley has been a volunteer. Giving her time and talents to others has been a unique joy, beginning when her children, Lynnie and Kenny, were very young. Shelley immediately jumped in and volunteered as PTO president. She even went as far as to create slideshow movies featuring every single student in the class for both of their graduating classes – not just once, but every year they both attended their elementary school. She’s also donated her time over the years to the Denver Ballet Guild and her church’s youth groups. Volunteering has given Shelley the opportunity to make her mark on the community, but more than that, to make a difference in the lives of those around her. Steve and Shelley’s unique approach to his type 1 extends into their family life – she considers them better for having the opportunity to turn this challenge into a blessing in their lives, and they feel honored to be a part of the Children’s Diabetes Foundation community. Steve has never once been backed into a corner by his T1D. He has served on the board of, volunteered with, and supported the Children’s Diabetes Foundation for many years. He finds the most joy in working with youth with diabetes, mentoring them and helping them learn how to better manage their challenge. Steve’s everpositive outlook on his type 1 diagnosis has ultimately led him to some of his greatest successes. Managing this disease is part-science and part-art, just like managing a business. Steve, a graduate of The University of Colorado School of Business, previously held the position of CEO of the marketing automation software company Marketo. Steve transformed the company from -6% year-over-year growth to over 35% YoY growth in just 24 months. This radical growth shift led to the acquisition of the company by Adobe in 2018. When Steve sold the company, he and his team had tripled the company’s valuation, making it the best and largest return in the shortest time in private-equity software history. Steve currently serves as the CEO of iCIMS, the world’s leading talent acquisition and HR cloud platform, empowering businesses to attract, engage, hire, and advance the world’s best talent, growing and diversifying their workforces. iCIMS boasts clients like Microsoft, Amazon, FedEx, Pepsi, and even The Cheesecake Factory – providing their services to some of the world’s largest organizations and helping to put the world back to work after the global pandemic.

If you were to ask Steve if he would trade his experiences in his life and career for not having type 1 diabetes, he insists that it’s a trade he would never be willing to make. He believes living with and managing a chronic illness forces one to empathize with others in ways they may not have otherwise. It is through that empathy that he and Shelley are able to share their personal knowledge of managing chronic illness, how to find a support network like that of the Children’s Diabetes Foundation and the Barbara Davis Center, and how to maintain hope that anyone can experience a life well-lived with type 1 diabetes.

Julie & Dan Feiten, MD 2021 Recipients of the Founders Award

Julie and Dan Feiten, MD, will be presented with the Founders Award at The Carousel Ball in honor of the instrumental role they have played in advancing pediatric diabetes care for more than three decades.

Thirty-one years ago, Julie and Dan Feiten’s lives were forever changed when their son, Jonathan, developed type 1 diabetes. Over time, their other two sons, Ben and Gabe, also contracted the disease… all three of them diagnosed under 2 years of age. In their early years, there were no insulin pumps or continuous glucose monitors. The family’s life revolved around this chronic disease. Each of the three boys required 6 finger pokes a day and two or more shots of life-saving insulin, which Julie diligently recorded in color-coded binders.

Julie became an expert in diabetes management. A tireless advocate, Julie demonstrated a positive attitude and unwavering hope to her children and to other families. She created training materials for parents, school staff, and coaches so that children with type 1 diabetes could be safe and thrive in school, sports, and other activities. She was often called upon to counsel mothers of newly diagnosed children with diabetes. Dr. Dan Feiten has served on the Children’s Diabetes Foundation Board of Directors for over 9 years. He is a private pediatrician and the co-founder of Greenwood Pediatrics, a 24-provider practice with three offices in south metro Denver. One of the focuses of his career has been to improve the lives of the many children in his practice with diabetes. His practice was the first pediatric practice to host the ASK study, which tracks autoimmunity in kids to identify children who are at risk for developing diabetes. He is also the founder of RemedyConnect, the largest pediatric web design company in the country whose profits support research in diabetes. Julie and Dan are most proud of their 4 children who carry on their parents’ positive attitude and hope for a cure for type 1 diabetes. Their sons have participated in many research studies over the years through the Barbara Davis Center. Their older sister, Emily, is a pediatric physician assistant and the Medical Coordinator of Camp Colorado, which hosts over 200 children with diabetes every summer. Together, the siblings have donated over 1,000 hours to support children with diabetes.

Dominic Garcia Emcee

Colorado is a part of Dominic’s DNA. A 3rd generation native, he grew

up in Southwest Denver and attended Thomas Jefferson High School. That’s also where he got his start in TV, delivering the school’s morning video announcements. After graduation he headed up north to Colorado State University, where he majored in Communications and worked at the student run TV station, CTV. Dominic’s broadcasting career started at KOAT, the ABC affiliate in Albuquerque, New Mexico. He spent three years in the Land of Enchantment covering the entire state. Crime, courts, snowstorms… he covered it all. But his favorite stories were always about the people that make New Mexico so interesting. Dominic profiled Brett Weitzel, a cancer survivor who had his leg amputated but still managed to compete in mountain bike events. After his time in New Mexico, Dominic started his first stint at CBS4. During his three years back in Colorado he covered some of the biggest stories to hit the state. The day of the Aurora theater shooting Dominic reported live from the suspect’s booby-trapped house as police made their way in. He also covered the Waldo Canyon Fire that scorched more than 18,000 acres, destroyed hundreds of homes, and took the lives of two people. On a lighter note, Dominic was also thrust into the Tim Tebow mania in 2011 and flew out to Boston to cover the Broncos in their playoff game against the Patriots. In 2013 his wife’s job took them to San Diego, where Dominic worked for the local CBS affiliate, the number 1 station in the market. There, he reported from the front lines of the Cocos Fire that destroyed 36 homes. He also flew to Idaho to cover the abduction of teenager Hannah Anderson, a story that caught national attention. In addition to reporting, Dominic was the station’s primary fill-in anchor. He also anchored sports and covered the move of the San Diego Chargers to Los Angeles. Prior to his return to CBS4, he worked on a documentary about the 75th anniversary of Pearl Harbor and won an Emmy for it. After his return to CBS4, in 2018, Dominic traveled to report on the commissioning of the USS Colorado submarine. His coverage, which highlighted local Colorado sailors serving onboard and the history of previous USS Colorado vessels, also won an Emmy. Dominic is married to his college sweetheart, Meghan, a native of Golden who is a physician at an allergy clinic in Lone Tree. They live in Lakewood with their two-and-a-half-year-old son Elliot. They also have a mini Goldendoodle, Vail… named after the mountain town where they were married. Dominic loves golf, history, and skiing. (He worked the ski lifts at Breckenridge in college). You can catch him weekdays anchoring 4:30 a.m. – 7 a.m. He also contributes stories and special projects to other shows.

Michelle Griego Emcee

Michelle Griego is a Colorado girl and back in her home state and at her home station, CBS4.

She grew up in North Denver, near Sloan’s Lake, and started her career in journalism at the tender age of 11. She co-anchored “Two Bits,” a KWGN-TV kids’ news show for nearly three years. The program was seen in Colorado, Wyoming, Utah and Nebraska. “At the time there weren’t a lot of Latinas on TV,” she says. “It felt like I was providing a service, because kids would come up to me and start talking about current events.” She knew instantly that journalism was her calling. Michelle attended Colorado State University and Metropolitan State University of Denver before beginning her career at CBS4 in 2005. She learned everything she knows about journalism during that time. She worked as an online editor, reporter and, eventually, an anchor. Her favorite live shots include breaking news or “being kneehigh in snow.” Michelle moved to the Bay Area in 2012 as the morning anchor at KPIX 5 in San Francisco where she covered mass shootings, Super Bowls, parades, and everything in between. She also hosted Bay Area Focus, a locally produced talk show. She was honored with an Emmy in 2014, 2016, and 2021. It wasn’t easy being a die-hard Broncos fan in Raiders Country, but Michelle and her family enjoyed their time in California. However, family, the Rocky Mountains, and green chile were always calling her back home to Colorado. In 2021 she was hired once again at CBS4 as the CBS4 This Morning anchor after spending nearly a decade away. Now, Michelle, her husband, and their three daughters are enjoying being around family and longtime friends. Michelle’s volunteer work includes sitting on the boards for the Latin American Educational Foundation and Adelante Mujer, an organization that helps Latina high school students pursue higher education and professional careers. You can catch her every weekday morning starting at 4:30 a.m. with CBS4’s Dominic Garcia.

REO Speedwagon Featured Performer

Formed in 1967, signed in 1971, and fronted by iconic vocalist Kevin Cronin since 1972, REO Speedwagon is

a band where the main constant over the decades is a never-ending desire to give their all to their fans, year in and year out.

Formed loosely in the late ‘60s at college in Champaign, IL, REO (named after the precursor to the light truck) rode to gigs in station wagons, hopping from small gigs to even tinier gigs, just to get their name out. It worked, as fans quickly realized there was much more going on here than your average college party band. By the early ‘70s, the band’s unrelenting drive, as well as non-stop touring and recording, jumpstarted the burgeoning rock movement in the Midwest. It carved a path that was eventually followed by STYX, Kansas, Cheap Trick and more. Platinum albums and freeform FM radio staples such as “Ridin’ The Storm Out” followed, setting the stage for 1980’s explosive Hi Infidelity (which received the Recording Industry Association of America®’s 10X Diamond Award for surpassing sales of 10 million units in the U.S.). REO rode the top of the charts with an RIAA-certified 22 million albums sold in the U.S. and 40 million around the globe, with a string of gold and platinum records and international hit singles. In 1994, when many rock bands of their era had either broken up, or were feeling like their days were numbered, the REO team came up with a co-headline tour concept that breathed new life into the world of touring. The “Can’t Stop Rockin’” amphitheater tour featuring Fleetwood Mac, REO, and Pat Benatar was a huge success and blazed the trail for the very popular co-headline tours that are seen nationwide today. Today, fully established with songs on the radio in every city and town they ever set foot in, REO Speedwagon still has that Midwest work ethic. The band has gone on stage and in the studio to work– dozens of albums, thousands of concerts, and countless radio spins. Their eyes have always been on the future and on the road – not a year has gone by where REO Speedwagon didn’t perform live, thrilling fans with hit filled sets.

Ellie Hampton Prayer Child

Ellie Elizabeth Hampton is an active 4th grader. She has many

passions and talents that she takes pride in. Each day you can find her helping on the family farm in rural Illinois with her mom, dad, and little brother Brody. Ellie loves all animals, and she enjoys expressing herself through art. She spends time drawing and painting. Her adventurous side has led her to competitive tumbling, 4-H, and softball. These activities help her cope with the many stressors of type 1 diabetes and keep her structured and focused on living her new normal. The weekend before Ellie was diagnosed, something seemed off. Everyday norms for Ellie like her energy level and her eating and drinking had changed. Mom and dad had a gut feeling that something was wrong and decided to make an appointment with her doctor. Her parents’ instincts were correct, and on July 2, 2018, at the age of 6, Ellie was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. She was immediately transferred by ambulance to the University of Iowa Hospitals in Iowa City, Iowa for more advanced care. Since Ellie’s diagnosis and the initial shock and confusion, she has taken on this new normal like a true champion. Throughout the daily struggles of highs and lows, Ellie has continued to show strength, courage, and positivity. With every finger poke, injection, and site change her fears have decreased, but each day continues to be a challenge. These challenges have become more manageable since becoming involved with the Children’s Diabetes Foundation and the Barbara Davis Center for Diabetes. With combined efforts from the BDC at her annual appointments and her local doctors at the University of Iowa, Ellie and her family truly feel like she has the best care and support when managing her diabetes. Their family, friends, coaches, teachers, and small-town community have joined forces to be educated and have proven to be tremendous supporters for Ellie. Ellie’s passion to help find a cure started with participating in their local diabetes fundraiser and walk. Since then, her passion has expanded tremendously. When the opportunity to become an advocate for the Children’s Diabetes Foundation presented itself, Ellie’s first question was, “Do I get to help people?” Since joining the program, she has been an active member and role model to others. She has gained more confidence and made connections with other kids with type 1 diabetes. Each year, she helps design a t-shirt for their local type 1 diabetes fundraiser and proceeds from those sales are donated to the Children’s Diabetes Foundation towards research. Even though Ellie lives in Illinois, she is still able to participate from afar and provide support and friendship to newly diagnosed kids. She has written notes and letters with words of encouragement to other kids and people who are also hoping for a cure. To be given the opportunity of being this year’s prayer child is such an honor for, not only Ellie, but to her entire family. When asked what this means to her, she said, “I’m excited to help others like me, and hopefully together we will one day find a cure.”

Children’s Diabetes Foundation Fundraising to Make an Impact

The Children’s Diabetes Foundation (CDF) was started in 1977 as the fundraising arm for the Barbara Davis Center for Diabetes (BDC) in Aurora, Colorado. The Barbara Davis Center provides care for over 7,600 patients and conducts extensive research on a cure for diabetes through stem cell therapy and other means, as well as diabetes technology, complications, prevention, and management. 40% of the patients at the BDC are under or uninsured, and 35% are at or below poverty level. Funding from the Children’s Diabetes Foundation supports these patients, BDC initiatives, as well as CDF programs. The doctors at the Barbara Davis Center have a unique opportunity to be up-close with this disease and see every side of it. This often sparks new research ideas that may not be viable for grants if prior evidence for success is not available through other studies. Usually this results in research being held back due to lack of grants. However, at the BDC, doctors have funds through the Children’s Diabetes Foundation that allow them to make these projects come to life or come up with the background results needed to jump into the next phase that will allow them to get grants. This keeps the research field moving forward efficiently. Diabetes care and supplies can cost up to $20,000 a year, which can be devastating to a family. These costs are not optional as a person with type 1 diabetes cannot survive without insulin. The Helping Hand Program helps families in financial need get the diabetes supplies, appointments, education, and technology they need to successfully manage their type 1 diabetes. Further, the program helps with ambulance transportation, hospital bills, and even monthly rent to make sure these families can afford life, not only for the type 1 person, but for the whole family. The Children’s Diabetes Foundation is honored to have over 300 incredible volunteers in The Guild of the Children’s Diabetes Foundation who are constantly giving their time and talent to make the Foundation thrive. They hold exciting events such as the Spring Brass Ring, Run for the Ring 5K & Kids Fun Run, Boo Bash (a Halloween party for type 1 kids), and much more. They also hold booths at events to spread awareness and education. The volunteer group is truly the heart behind the Foundation and we are lucky to have them by our side! The Children’s Diabetes Foundation strives to support families emotionally as well. In 2016, the Foundation started holding monthly support groups where families can get together to discuss life with type 1 diabetes. Those with type 1 diabetes are twice as likely to suffer from depression. Giving people an opportunity to talk through the details with those who understand what they are going through can make all the difference. Today, there are twelve support groups online and across Colorado and Wyoming where families can speak and be heard about the challenges of living with type 1 diabetes. 2021 marked the fourth annual EPIC Diabetes Conference, a one-day patient conference for people living with type 1 and type 2 diabetes and their friends, family, and caregivers. Held virtually for the first time, this event brought together hundreds of people from 21 states and three countries to attend sessions and connect directly with Colorado’s top endocrinologists and diabetes specialists in real time, even though they weren’t in the same room. Attendees gave overwhelmingly great reviews and were thankful to feel that they were not alone with this disease. The Children’s Diabetes Foundation continues to co-host the ATDC Conference with the Barbara Davis Center. While this conference is usually held annually in Keystone, Colorado, the 2021 event was held virtually and

brought together over 560 healthcare professionals from 44 states and 13 countries for 4 days to learn the most up-to-date information on diabetes care, technology, and research to improve care. Currently, the world at large is very naïve about diabetes and what it is really like to live with it. We will continue to spread awareness and educate people as much as possible, so no type 1 has to hear “you have diabetes because you ate too much sugar” or “you can’t eat that” ever again. These stereotypes pervade the public consciousness but are simply not true. Sharing what real life is like with type 1 with the masses is another way we hope to help those living with the disease. The Barbara Davis Center is a unique facility because everything the patient could need for their diabetes care is under one roof. The Center employs doctors, physicians, nutritionists, social workers, psychologists, prescription managers, scientific researchers, and more to make sure that every part of a patient’s diabetes care is covered. The Children’s Diabetes Foundation is proud to raise funds for this incredible facility that is making a huge impact in the world of diabetes.

What is Diabetes?

#KNOWTHESYMPTOMS Extreme Thirst Frequent Urination Lethargy Increased Appetite Sudden Weight Loss Sudden Vision Changes

Diabetes is an autoimmune disease that afflicts 35 million people in the United States, about 1.5 million of

whom have type 1 diabetes. Type 1 diabetes used to be called juvenile diabetes or childhood diabetes, but recent studies have shown that 50% of people who are diagnosed with type 1 diabetes are over the age of 20. Every year, approximately 50,000 people are diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, and this number continues to rise. You have probably heard of insulin and glucose, but how do they work? After a person eats a meal, food is broken down into glucose (sugar) and nutrients, which are absorbed into the blood stream. This causes sugar levels in the blood to rise, which triggers the pancreas to make the hormone insulin and send it into the bloodstream. In people with diabetes, the body either can’t make or can’t respond to insulin properly. This means the sugar stays in the blood stream instead of getting into cells, where the sugar is used for energy. Because of this, people with type 1 diabetes take artificial insulin throughout the day to counteract high blood sugars. They take the medicine through multiple doses of insulin every day, either through injections or an insulin pump worn on the body. While these measures are certainly helpful for maintaining a steady blood sugar, they are not a perfect science. There are many variables that go into diabetes management, such as diet, exercise, hormones, stress levels, and countless others.

Another concern for diabetics is low blood sugar or hypoglycemia. Symptoms of hypoglycemia include blurred vision, shaking, sweating, slurred speech, irritability, drowsiness, and acting incoherent or spacey. If the blood sugar is severely low, the person may become unconscious or have a seizure. These low blood sugars put a diabetic in immediate danger. Unfortunately, there is no cure for diabetes. Each child who is diagnosed with type 1 diabetes will have the disease for the rest of their life, unless we can find a cure. The risk of developing diabetes is higher than virtually all other childhood chronic illnesses. It is estimated that one out of every three babies born today will have diabetes in their lifetime. For this reason, the Barbara Davis Center continues to improve diabetes care and search for a cure for type 1 diabetes.

The Cost of Diabetes When a child is diagnosed with type 1 diabetes (T1D), the start-up education and appointment fees can be > $5,000.

INSULIN Insulin is necessary for a person with T1D to survive. Although current monthly insulin can cost up to $1,200/month, starting in 2022 Colorado House Bill 21-1307 created an insulin affordability program which caps prices at $100/ month for each basal or prandial insulin. MULTIPLE DAILY INJECTION (MDI) INSULIN THERAPY MDI therapy typically consists of three or more insulin injections per day. Continuous Glucose Monitors (CGMs) allow a patient’s glucose values to be monitored every 5 minutes and improves glucose control and reduces hypoglycemia, especially at night. Total annual cost of MDI can exceed $8,000 per year. Total cost of MDI during pregnancy can exceed $11,000. $1,300 $2,500 $3,000 $1,200 $300

INSULIN PUMP THERAPY Insulin pumps (a preferred therapy for T1D) allow a patient to get a catheter every 2-3 days instead of injecting multiple times a day and can give small doses to manage type 1 diabetes more minutely. The startup for an insulin pump & supplies can be $5,000 - $8,000 depending on the pump. Total cost for Insulin Pump Therapy can exceed $11,000 per year.

DIABETIC KETOACIDOSIS When blood sugars are too high, a patient may go into a dangerous physical state known as Diabetic Ketoacidosis and coma (the most common cause of death in the past). A hospital stay for this can easily cost $10,900 per day. GLUCAGON If blood sugars are too low, a patient may go unconscious, have a seizure, or in extreme cases, die. Glucagon kits are the last resort to save a patient when they are not able to chew or swallow carbs and sugars to raise their blood sugar. These kits cost $300 per year and need to be replaced every 12 months. MEANWHILE, WE ARE SEARCHING FOR A CURE… Stem cell research is looking incredibly promising in ways of a cure, but $40,000 is required to produce enough beta cells for one patient. $>75,000 will support a post-doctoral fellow for one year at the Barbara Davis Center. $>100,000 is needed to pilot a new, groundbreaking research project for one year.

✴ ✴ ✴

My darling Dana,

✴ ✴ ✴

I am so proud of you and all that you have done and continue to do for diabetes. In looking up “proud” in the dictionary, the definition is: “Proud: feeling deep pleasure or satisfaction as a result of the achievements, qualities, or possessions of someone with whom one is closely associated, glad, happy, delighted, joyful, overjoyed, thrilled, well pleased, satisfied, gratified, content, appreciative.” You are all of these things and so much more. Your dedication, your quiet strength and determination give hope to so many. Your leadership and enthusiasm in heading the Children’s Diabetes Foundation, and your positive spirit rally the staff of CDF who give so generously of their time, and talent. Their loyalty and commitment in creating the most wonderful events for the community to become involved and to bring awareness to type 1 diabetes far exceeds what your father and I had dreamed of when we first learned of your diagnosis and then decided to devote our lives to finding a cure. The Barbara Davis Center for Diabetes is one of the largest clinics in the world specializing in type 1 diabetes research and care for children and adults. The BDC currently cares for over 7,600 children and adults with diabetes. We have patients receiving care from 46 states and 33 countries with 800 new patients each year. Our doctors, researchers and scientists work tirelessly and are so committed to finding a cure. I thank them from the bottom of my heart. Your dad and I wanted a Center for all people suffering from type 1 diabetes to feel cared for and welcome regardless of their income. I am grateful every day that we built this Center. I am very proud of the BDC and the CDF and am so grateful for the health and welfare that it has brought to so many people. For all of the wonderful things you do, the wonderful people that you attract, to giving everybody a perfect chance to have healthy, productive lives and taking care of those who can afford to pay or not, this is the best care anywhere in the world. I thank your father for building it with me and I thank you because our little girl had developed diabetes. I am so proud of you and all of the things you have accomplished and continue to accomplish, you are such an inspiration to so many and I know your dad and I could not to prouder of our little girl. I love you and all that you do and I truly thank the doctors, scientists, researchers, your wonderful staff and so many volunteers that are the family of the BDC and the CDF. My heartfelt thanks to each and every one. With so much love and admiration, Love, Mom
