WELCOME TO THE LONG AWAITED FASHION ISSUE! This has to be, hands down, my favourite issue to date. We have lots in store for you; I just literally don’t know where to start!

First up, we have our fantastic tutorial from Jameela at Sweet Jeelees, who has put together a gorgeous leather handbag for us to create! Alongside that, we also have detailed tutorial from Rachel at KPME, which shows us how to get a tartan effect and make the cutest baby boots. We also have a great vintage mini-dress tutorial by Suzi Thomas from Spongecake Suzebakes! Exclusive to Cake Masters Magazine, we have a special Runway Barbie Collection by William Tan from the Ipoh Bakery in Malaysia. A totally different and exciting take on a doll cake, where Barbie is transformed wearing high fashion sugar dresses!

Another fantastic addition to this edition is our Sugar Shoe Collection. A selection of cake decorators around the world picked a theme and designed a collection of shoes - wait until you see what has been produced! It was so very hard to decide which shoes to put into the magazine! On the topic of shoes, I am also very excited to announce our amazing competition with Shoe Bakery - all you have to do is sketch your dream shoe design and if selected as a winner, Shoe Bakery will make them into a pair of shoes for you to wear, AND there is a chance of it being in their collection! Get sketching! I can’t wait to see what you all come up with!

As well as all the above, Kim from Sugar Rush Custom Cookies has designed a special feature for the magazine. “Fashion Through the Decades” takes us on a trip down memory lane with beautiful royal iced and hand-painted cookies - this is really not to be missed! I really hope you enjoy this issue; it has been a pleasure putting it together this month!

THE MAKING OF

The Cupcake Dress

by Rosie , Editor Cake Masters Magazine

So did you get to strike a pose in our fabulous purple ombre cupcake dress at the cake shows in April? We really were so proud and amused as we watched so many of you channel your inner Diva! As it is the fashion issue, it is only right that we let you in on the making of that spectacular showpiece! The fact was, I wanted to do something really different on our stands at the cake shows and to have something physical that visitors could interact with. After throwing lots of ideas about, I came up with a dress – an edible creation that anyone could wear. I had seen something similar online and thought it would be lovely to have a huge dress made out of purple ombre cupcakes. Like most things here at Cake Masters Magazine, I love to daydream about really creative ideas; while Mr. Cake Masters has the pleasure of trying to find a real-life practical solution to bring my dreams to life. We literally started sketching things to scale on graph paper – I knew saving that orange pad would come in useful one day! We had to try and work out the size and height of the dress, as well as factoring in the average size of a person. Frankly, I am glad that Mr. Cake Masters took over, as my head started hurting

Planning stages and sketches

and I was struggling to visualise just how this was going to come together.

After having several conversations with Emma, who is part of a company that sets up stands and builds awesome things- we were able to come to a design that would include steps for people to stand tall and pose behind the dress. The Fabulous Ombre Cupcake Skirt

So we had the design, but now we had a vast amount of mathematics to do to find out how many cupcakes were going to be needed. The plan was to have each cupcake decorated with several small sugarpaste flowers of varying colour depth, using the ProGel purple from Rainbow Dust. We needed to also work out the amount of sugarpaste required to top them with the flowers. After a lot of number crunching, we calculated that we needed 800 cupcakes, topped with 4cm of buttercream each and 5000 flowers. This was going to be a lot of hard work! Through the power of Facebook, I was able to recruit my volunteer flower girls: Emma, from Gifted Heart Cakes; Katy, from Katy Bakey; Davinder, from Flourbowlcakes and Rebecca, from Sugar Plum Cake Company.

My fantastically hard working flower girls met me at Knightsbridge PME headquarters in Enfield, to help with the flower making. Pat and Paula from PME were great hosts to our little team of flower makers, and it was great to be back there again. I first visited the PME HQ in 2012, when I booked myself on the PME Intensive Diploma course with Tony Warren. Not only is it a place where they run their diploma courses and other classes, they have a huge shop where they stock all their PME equipment – once you get spending, there is really is no stopping!

To create the flowers, we used purple ProGel from Rainbow Dust. This was my first time using the ProGels; as like many of you, I have always used Sugarflair. The ProGels were great to use and the deep colour was really easy to achieve. We were able to create a very deep base colour, which I thought would be quite soft due to the amount of colour used; but it was so easy to work with and wasn’t a sticky mess at all. The Stunning Corset

The corset was created by Claire Bowman from Cake Lace. If you have not tried this product, I can assure you it is amazing! It is so

flexible and really easy to work with.

There is no one better than Claire, to take you through how the beautiful corset top came together:

“Creating the corset for the cupcake dress was a fantastic opportunity to get creative with Cake Lace! I used 6kg of sugarpaste to cover the corset and then the fun started… the decorating! I used six full mats of Eternity 3D Cake Lace with white Cake Lace to decorate the bodice, and ten full mats to create the frills framing the top and the bottom of the corset cake. I had lots of leftover in my 500g tub even making such copious amounts of Cake Lace!

To make the four miniature bows on the top and bottom of the corset, I used pearlised Cake Lace in the Vintage Bows 3D Cake Lace mat. The Cake Lace on the bodice was easily attached with water and the frills were ‘stuck’ with royal icing, so it held strongly. I used my Dinkydoodle airbrush to quickly airbrush the frills and to create a gradient. I

also airbrushed with pink and brown paints to create a cheeky hint of cleavage on the mannequin’s chest!

I was thrilled when the finished dress was unveiled. It looked stunning; the best part was seeing how much everyone enjoyed posing behind the corset and having their pictures taken!” Bringing it All Together

I was definitely a little nervous to see how this was going to all come together. The stand for the dress was being built in one place; Claire Bowman was making the corset in another location and the cupcakes were being delivered and decorated separately. It was all a little worrying, thinking that something might go wrong; especially with so many component parts! But to my relief, on arriving at the first show, our empty skirt stand was already there waiting to be adorned with cupcakes! Thanks to Wendy, Helen and Katy for helping out with placing our ombre cupcakes on the stand, the end result was simply stunning!

And as for how it was received? Well what can I say! I knew the idea would be fab; but I never expected it to get the attention it did. You all really loved it and I have to say some of the Diva poses were simply amazing! I am still giggling that the most enthusiastic poses came from the men – they really seemed to like the tiara, feather boa and gloves!

Heart-felt and massive thanks to my tireless flower girls and to Claire Bowman; you all helped make my day-dream such an amazing reality. Big thanks also to the helpers on the day, especially Katy from Katy Bakey and Helen Collier from Colliwobble Cakes – our loveable Cake Fairy - who truly went above and beyond. Special thanks to PME for letting us set up our flower production line and an extra special thanks to Emma and Jeremy from B2 for just being great! Linda Schwartz Frog Prince Cake & Cookie Design Theme: Wedding Shoes I have always loved high fashion shoes, so I chose “Wedding Shoes” as my theme, with an underlying theme of bows. I wanted to make: Valentino, Kate Spade and Ferragamo. The bows were another challenge in themselves as I wanted to have three completely different styles, while trying to stay true to the designer’s patterns, textures, and colours.
