Acknowledgments We want to thank Rocky Mountain Prep staff for allowing us to work with your students. Special thank you to Ms Villagrana and Mr. Becker for supporting student voice through our collaboration.

Foreword It was an honor to partner with Rocky Mountain Prep to offer an all-boys spoken word workshop series. We used our “Telling Our Stories” curriculum to teach three sections of young men. We enjoyed the students’ enthusiasm, willingness to take risks, and appreciate for their ancestors. As you read this book, we are sure you will see the same potential for greatness that we experienced. We look forward to staying connected, as they develop into the leaders we need. Enjoy and share their words! For those who do not know about our organization: Café Cultura is an award-winning arts, culture, and youth development organization in Denver that promotes unity and healing among Indigenous peoples through creative expression while empowering youth to find their voice, reclaim oral and written traditions, and become leaders in their communities. Café Cultura has been providing positive, creative, and engaging community spaces for the Denver metropolitan area for more than thirteen years. After the passing of respected elder and veteran poet Abelardo “Lalo” Delgado, we accepted responsibility to continue using our oral and written traditions to provide opportunities for creative expression often not offered in schools or in the larger community. Café Cultura also drew inspiration from the movement connecting Indigenous people from throughout the Americas. We use creative expression to unify people representing southern Indigenous nations, known by terms such as “Chicana/o” and “Latina/o,” with those Natives of northern nations, referred to as “American Indian” or “Native American.” Café Cultura hosts one of the best open mic venues in the Denver metropolitan area, and the only space focused on family and youth. We also conduct highly engaging and culturally relevant spoken word/poetry workshops for underserved youth throughout Colorado. Café Cultura partners with select organizations and

schools to facilitate an intensive workshop series, publish youth poetry, and organize participant showcases. In an effort to develop young leaders within our community, we also coordinate a youth leadership program for Indigenous youth. If you or your organization is interested in collaborating, feel free to contact us. Tortas never taste bad. I eat tortas when I am sad. When I eat tortas, I am glad. Tortas taste like heaven. When I eat tortas, my mouth fills with joy. They remind me of my relatives. They smell like everyone’s favorite foods. I am the creation of greatness. I come from heaven where God is. I will always remember people who I love. I will never forget what good things my family did for me. I love my parents because they work hard for me and my siblings. God is one of my fathers. I appreciate my parents for everything. I will grow up to be like them. I will rise and be good, the way life should be. I love my parents and they love me.

Goals by Bruno Soccer is like life. It is full of goals and fouls. Every time you make a goal, you push yourself forward. Your enemies will try to hurt you and ruin your goals. Life is like the never ending struggle of soccer, full of pain and strife. There are people who win. There are those who stop you from achieving your goals, the goalkeepers. There are people who try to steal your goals and to score it themselves, the strikers. But there are good people in this world. Your leaders, they will lead you to victory. Your team, they will help you achieve your goals. Finally your coach, they teach you what you need to know in this world. But all together, you can achieve the things that others think is impossible.

Life by Ulises Life is more like soccer. Someone is always trying to steal something from you and make you go get it back. You have to take it back. Life is also like Fortnite. People just want to do whatever they want to do. They kill people, rob places, and commit crime. Life is kind of like Call of Duty, because people like to kill other people, and also do whatever they want to do.

Fortnite by Michael Fortnite is my life. I play it all day. I play it all night.

A Winner by Anonymous Playing games is like life. When I play, people interrupt me and I lose all the time. I still keep playing, learning lessons. I come back playing, then I keep on winning, feeling proud. I feel like a winner. I feel like a savage. Feeling like a winner, I come back and they knock me out, putting me in a dark place. I stand up feeling like a winner, then I break out. I keep going, meeting the end, making my last move. People try to stop me. I push them to the side and I keep on going forward.

Success From Struggle by Anonymous I show my strength, courage, and sportsmanship. We get wins in football, earn stuff off court like going to college. We get losses. We do not get trophies, but we get up, retry, and do it again next season. The struggle does not start there: divorce, money. But when all that stuff get you down, you got this. You are up by 7. Fame ends, but to get here, you get your scholarship to go to college. You keep going and get there eventually. And at the end, you accomplished it. Nothing could hold you down.
