PUBLISHER'S NOTE

C

Support, Shop, and Eat Local

City Magazine is all about supporting our local businesses, restaurants, and shops; it’s our mission! That’s why every year we publish the City’s Best issue. The City’s Best poll allows Jefferson City to support their favorite places, people, and services. For example, you’ll notice the beautiful cover that features our very own Central Diary ice cream. Central Diary, along with Arris’ Pizza, received more votes than any other winner: they are two of our oldest establishments in town, and also some of the most iconic places for locals and outof-town visitors to frequent. They are destinations that deserve to be celebrated because they are an important fiber of our community, as are the rest of our winners. I hope you enjoy the City’s Best feature and recognize some familiar faces of local business owners, doctors, musicians, vets, stylists, contractors, financial advisors, chefs, etc. If you see winners around town, be sure to congratulate them and thank them for their contributions to the Jefferson City community. You’ll notice that this issue is visually beautiful. Just take a look at the outstanding City’s Best food: best pancakes, best burger, best sushi, best pizza, best desserts, best coffee, and best beer, just to mention a few. When you are deciding where to dine or be entertained, take a look at the City’s Best Directory and choose to celebrate with our local establishments. These are the people and places that create our strong community. Community is about people coming together for a common goal. Our goal at City Magazine is to continue to help our local businesses thrive and share their services and products with our readers through the magazine and our social media platforms. We congratulate the 2016 City’s Best winners, and we hope you will as well — by shopping local, eating local, and supporting local business! Jefferson City, you’re the best!

Our Next Issue

I

City’s Best

➻ Holiday Issue

I am so proud to have grown up in (and now work in) a city that is so supportive of its citizens and local businesses. This City’s Best issue has allowed me to meet many local leaders who truly put our city first. Our Best Politicians, Best Pharmacists, Best Dentists, and so on all talked about how important their customers and community are to them. In a season of political turmoil, it’s heartening to be part of a community that lifts each other up. Whether it’s local medical services, restaurants, banks, or dozens of others, so many businesses and people work hard to make our town great. With the biggest voting turnout we’ve yet had for City’s Best, it is clear that Jefferson City residents are just as proud as I am to be living here. I am excited to share this issue with you. I know you’ll enjoy seeing our City’s Best winners, but I hope you’ll also love reading about Five Turn Knot, Oscar’s Classic Diner, JCMO native Lyssa Surface, and much more. I also want to thank all of our contributing freelancers, photographers, and designers for making this issue. Your insights and ideas are imperative in creating a great magazine. And thank you, readers, for taking the time to show your support for our city by voting for and reading about our 2016 City’s Best!

The holidays are coming up, and we have a gift for you! We are partnering with the Missouri River Wine Trail to give away two tickets to each of their events for all of 2017. Keep an eye on our social media and our website to know when and where to sign up.

Every Move Matters THE POPULAR PHRASE “PERCEPTION IS REALITY” is often used to express the idea that how things really are is based on a person’s perspective. While this may be true in certain areas of life, this statement is simply not true when it comes to retirement planning. Plan sponsors often make assumptions regarding their employees’ levels of understanding on various aspects of retirement planning. Such aspects include an employee’s understanding of available plan investment options, individual retirement goals, savings requirements, and plan effectiveness. Consequently, plan sponsors must ask themselves, “Does my perception of plan participants’ understanding of retirement goals and investment options match up with their reality?” The truth is, perceptions of plan sponsors are often inconsistent with what their participants truly think. In fact, a recent study conducted by BlackRock and published in their 2016 DC Pulse found that the discrepancies can be quite stark between plan sponsors’ perceptions and the reality of what participants actually think about their retirement plan. For instance, one of the most important issues for employees to consider regarding retirement planning is whether or not they are saving enough to have a secure retirement. *BlackRock’s survey found that while 59% of plan sponsors believed the majority of their plan participants’ savings were adequate, only 28% of employees thought they were saving enough. The survey results also revealed a large perception gap in the number of participants who knew how much money they would need during retirement: 64% of plan sponsors thought their employees understood the amount of money necessary to achieve their retirement goals whereas only 37% of employees responded that they understood. Plan sponsors significantly overestimate their employees’ understanding of plan investment options as well with 67% of plan sponsors responding they think their participants understand their investment options. Not surprisingly, only 43% of participants felt they understood the investment options offered by their plan.

Brandon Nicklas

Retirement Plans Marketing and Operations Officer

The fact that plan sponsors and employees report such drastic differences should alert sponsors that they are likely operating from inaccurate perceptions of their participants. These differences can lead to frustrations for both plan sponsors and participants when plans do not adequately meet participant needs. But the good news is by pinpointing these misperceptions plan sponsors can implement strategies to correct them more effectively. Now more than ever participants are looking for help when it comes to retirement savings. Only one out of three participants are satisfied with plan support for monitoring and changing their savings rates and 42% would be interested in getting help determining how much they should contribute to their plan. These survey results should motivate plan sponsors to reevaluate whether or not their assumptions are consistent with their participants’ actual experience. By better understanding the participants’ perceptions, plan sponsors can implement solutions to make more meaningful improvements to their participants’ retirement outcomes.

Do Women and Men invest differently?

Men and women are vastly different from each other and most would probably concur that the two genders frequently behave differently. Various studies and anecdotal evidence suggests these differences in behavior show up in the way that men and women invest: • Men tend to trade more often than women. Men seem to buy and sell investments more frequently than women. This difference could result in an advantage for women investors. For example, if women do trade less, they may incur fewer commission charges, fees and other expenses, all of which can eat into investment returns. Also, by holding investments longer, women may be able to take better advantage of market rallies. • Men tend to invest more aggressively than women. Perhaps not surprisingly, men seem to be more willing to take risks with their investments. This can be both positive and negative. On the positive side, risk is associated with reward, so the more aggressive the investment, the greater the potential for growth. On the negative side, taking too much risk pretty much speaks for itself. Ideally, all investors should stick with investments that fit their individual risk tolerance. • Women are more likely to look at the “big picture.” Although both men and women investors want information, women seem to take a more “holistic” approach — that is, instead of focusing strictly on performance statistics, they tend to delve deeper into their investments’ background, competitive environment and other factors. • Men may be more optimistic about the financial markets. Some studies show that men are more optimistic about key economic indicators and future stock market performance. Optimism can be a valuable asset when it comes to investing; if you have confidence in the future, you’re more likely to invest for it, and to continue investing. Ultimately, it’s your decision-making, not your x- or y-chromosomes, that will determine your ability to make progress toward your long-term goals — so educate yourself and get the help you need from a financial professional.

alking inside this custom home in the bluffs across the bridge, you might think you're still outdoors. With floor-to-ceiling windows, various naturallooking materials, and fantastic forest views, you feel as though you've stepped through a portal into the middle of some Colorado woodlands. The owners of this luxury lodge had a definite vision for their home from the start. "When we bought the land, we wanted something that felt like a hideaway, but was still close to home,” the homeowner says. “We also knew we wanted the Colorado lodge-type house. I wanted the rustic look, but more contemporary." The vaulted ceilings and almost seamless transitions from the great room to the covered deck easily reach the rustic–contemporary look. Every room is painted in warm colors with either plush carpets or dark wood floors. Rooms without carpet have gorgeous rugs, picked by the homeowner, that pull together decor with color. The

granite island in the kitchen perfectly reflects the natural light coming through the wall-width window over the kitchen sink. The double-sided stone fireplace provides warmth and style to both the great room and the dining room. Angie Zimmerman, designer, and Scott Schaeperkoetter, builder, have been with the homeowners from the beginning. "I remember sitting down with the homeowner for the first time,” Zimmerman says. “She came out of the gate with luxury mountain home magazines that we sat and planned with for four hours.” That session began a nearly five-year process, from drawing up plans to finding and buying the land to going through the actual construction. "We decided to go with Signature Homes after they had redone the basement in my previous home. We picked out a room in a magazine, the great room, and planned from there," says the homeowner. "I took that image of the room to Scott, and he drew it up. It was exactly what I envisioned. Once the plans were drawn up, there were very few changes."

HOME TOUR

The homeowners wanted their home to feel like a part of the landscape. Once an appropriate spot was chosen, only the necessary number of trees were removed, amplifying the feeling of intimate isolation. From every one of the giant windows in the home, there are breathtaking natural views. Each material used was carefully chosen by the homeowners and the designer together. Some of the materials even have a personal value. The mantel piece on the double sided fireplace,

for example, came from a barn owned by the homeowner's parents. The red, wing-backed chair belonged to the owner's grandfather. The rug in the great room was purchased from a hotel by the homeowner's grandmother. "There's a lot to be said for working with someone who knows what they want," says Zimmerman. From conception to completion, the owners, designer, and contractors worked together to create a home that fits a dream.

or twenty years, Shannon Smith had been going for annual mammograms. For twenty years, the spot on her breast had been negative. Last summer, the scans came up positive. It was cancer. Women in the United States carry a one in eight lifetime risk of getting breast cancer; it’s also the type of cancer most commonly diagnosed in this country. With the prevalence of the disease, it’s important to know where to get the best treatment possible. “It’s a rough thing to go through,” Smith says. “When I was first diagnosed, it was very shocking. You are just devastated.” As a Jefferson City Medical Group employee, Shannon knew the quality of care here in Jefferson City. She decided to keep her treatments local. “You get just as good of care here as you do at other clinics in the country,” says Smith. “I have

HEALTH AND WELLNESS trust in the physicians.” At JCMG, Smith found her support team in Dr. Jonathan Roberts (surgeon), Dr. John Bechtel (radiation oncologist), and Dr. Shadi Haddadin (oncologist). JCMG partners with SSM Health – St. Mary’s to provide quality, up-todate care for every patient. Their goal, according to their website, is to “develop an individualized treatment plan, for our patients and their families, so that we may maximize treatment goals while providing the highest quality of care,” and they accomplish that every day. “Shannon is a great example of the importance of having a multi-disciplinary approach for the management of breast cancer,” says Dr. Haddadin. “Her plan

of care was tailored to her specific needs after a review by our expert treatment team – pathologist, radiologist, surgical oncology, and radiation oncology. She benefited from the latest advances in cancer care.” “Dr. Haddadin is very current,” Smith

says. “He is always researching different strategies, different chemotherapies. He is always on top of the new and the latest-and-greatest procedures and techniques. JCMG’s advancements in health care are just as good as the top clinics in the country.” Dr. Roberts was recognized as the first surgeon in Missouri to use MarginProbe. This new technology allows surgeons to detect cancerous tissue that is not visible to the eye, preventing multiple operations. Not only does this new procedure limit the amount of surgeries needed, it saves patients up to $400,000 in medical expenses. Having experience as an employee and patient of Jefferson City health services, Smith wholeheartedly recommends staying in JCMO for your health care needs. Building relationships locally and being comfortable and familiar with her providers made all the difference in Smith’s treatment and recovery. “When you go into Dr. Haddadin’s office, where they do the chemotherapy, there are other patients there. You get to talk with them, and Terri Stone [a DNP who works with Haddadin] has started a support group that meets once a month. It brings the caregivers and patients together. The physicians are always there for you. You can call them any time. They even gave me their personal cell phone numbers. They truly care about their patients.” A little over a year after her diagnosis, Smith is able to cheer on her daughter, Brynn, who has Down syndrome, at her first ever Special Olympics. Shannon and her husband adopted Brynn from China four years ago. Shannon Smith has reached the point in her care that she was able to ring the survivor’s bell. This is a significant moment for cancer patients and their health care team. Ringing the bell means that the patient is able to stop active treatment and begin their life free of cancer. With the help of her care team, Smith is about as close to remission as you can get. She, her husband, and her three children can again enjoy life, thanks to the knowledgeable treatment and support of her local physicians.

second, declare, and proclaim that we have the best city ever. What makes our city the best? We are one of 50. It’s pretty special to be one of 50 mayors in the country who preside over their state’s capital city. Add to that the honor of being the mayor of Rand

McNally’s

Most

Beautiful Small Towns in America! And, in even more honor, we are the only city in the country with a capitol, a river, and a historic prison. You can’t be the best if you don’t try to get better. We already know #JCMO is the best place to enjoy July 4th, and our Salute to America celebration is the best around. So, how can we make the best even better? This year, it happened with an extra night added for a concert at the historic Missouri State Penitentiary.

Who would have thought we’d be trying so hard to get into prison? They said it couldn’t be done, that there were too many obstacles to overcome (the prison walls

just being one of them). But we had our volunteers and a great partnership with the state, county, and CVB. Who would have ever thought that the prison’s upper yard is set up perfectly for a concert venue? 2,000 people now know and are already looking forward to next year’s event! Our city has the strong support of people who embraced this unknown event and venue. Being the best starts with thinking of it, dreaming of it, then building a plan to reach your goal. And don’t ever give up. To those businesses on the City’s Best list, you already know that the amazing support of the community is why you’re on the list. Without the support of the people, there is no “best” list. If we run our businesses focused solely on our own success, we will be very limited; if we focus our attention on the customer, we will be the best every time. In turn, supporting our local businesses makes our city the best place to live! #CitysBEST

TRICK-OR-TREAT

PUMPKIN PATCH The Fischer Farms Pumpkin Patch is getting ready for Fall. With a corn maze, a hayride, and petting zoo, you won’t want to miss the fun! Pick your pumpkins over the bridge on Mokane Rd. while enjoying a beautiful view of our Capitol. Visit the Fischer Farms Pumpkin Patch and Corn Maze Facebook for more information.

The tradition of trick-or-treating has been around since the 1950s. Families who wanted to participate would decorate their houses, and the children in their costumes would ask for treats to protect themselves from tricks. Those who did not want to be involved in the festivities would turn off all their lights to “hide” from the trick-ortreaters. Help out trick-or-treaters in Jeff City this Halloween!

Take a seat at the lunch counter of Oscar’s Diner and you’re in danger of being swept along by a tide of nostalgia. Plates heaped with burgers and fries roll off the line while the orders are called from the kitchen’s window. Servers genially keep pace with the fury of demand. Black-and-white images of a simpler time line the walls, and a jukebox

plays old, familiar tunes. It’s the 1950s all over again, with a twist. “There weren’t any theme restaurants around here when we opened,” says Lisa Mankin, who owns the business with her husband, Kurt. “We wanted something fun and family oriented, so we came up with the diner.” Good plan. Earlier this year, Oscar’s was voted as having the No. 1 lunch special in

Jefferson City by the News Tribune, and their burgers ranked No. 2. Their morning favorites, such as country eggs benedict and the “hungry man” platter, are perennial winners in the best breakfast category. It’s no surprise that Oscar’s is a winner. The original Oscar’s, owned by Kurt Mankin’s grandfather, Oscar Mankin, was a beloved Jeff City tradition from 1948 to 1971. When Oscar retired, he sold the business, Jefferson City Magazine | 109

said she received multiple calls from people who were concerned about losing those depictions of memories they had lived. Realizing how tenuous those connections to the past can be, the callers asked for copies, and, feeling like her customers are an extension of her own family, Lisa complied. “We have regulars who come every day, every week,” she says. “It was very touching.” But just because they offer that step back in time doesn’t mean they don’t keep up with new trends. Although most of the food served at Oscar’s is homestyle, they also offer a heart healthy menu with smaller portions and lower-sodium options. They have gluten-free items for those dietary restrictions as well. “The gluten-free menu has been very well received,” says Lisa. They took on the new effort after an employee had been diagnosed with dietary restrictions. “It made a dramatic difference in her health, and it inspired our change.” Oscar’s is a family-style restaurant that focuses on building family relationships in business as well: from their employees, many of whom have been on staff for ten or twelve years, to their regulars, who come in for a traditional breakfast. “People gather here [in the banquet room] for their important events: weddings, funerals, class reunions,” Lisa says. “We become part of people’s lives, and we enjoy that.” Jefferson City Magazine | 113

Cole County Clerk WHAT IS YOUR CURRENT JOB TITLE AND HOW LONG HAVE YOU HELD THAT POSITION? Cole County Clerk; January 1, 2015 to present. WHERE ELSE HAVE YOU WORKED? I was the owner and operator of Blackwell’s Garage for over 33 years. WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO RUN FOR COUNTY CLERK? I believe in what the office stands for. The country clerk’s office is responsible for

ensuring that every eligible citizen of our county has the opportunity to vote for the leaders in our community, state, and nation. We are so fortunate to live in a country where each citizen has a voice and an opportunity to choose our leaders. It is an honorable yet humbling position. When I heard our former clerk, Marvin Register, had chosen not to run for another term, I was already looking toward retirement from my shop, so I decided to run for

this position. I had years of experience in successful leadership and customer service, and I had a good reputation as being fair and honest. I wanted to serve the citizens of Cole County in a broader way. TELL US ABOUT YOUR FAMILY. My wife, LeAnn, and I have been married for 34 years. We are the proud parents of three children: Christopher, Stephanie Rankins, and Matthew. We also have five Jefferson City Magazine | 115

PYSK grandchildren: Noah, Blake, Emma, Levi, and Tyson. WHERE DID YOU GO TO SCHOOL? Blair Oaks High School. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE CHARITABLE ORGANIZATION AND WHY? Cole County is a wonderful and caring community — we’re fortunate that we have such wonderful resources available when we have a need. It’s very difficult to choose one organization as my favorite. For several years, Blackwell’s Garage was a golf sponsor of the annual Rape and Abuse Crisis Center “Walk A Mile in Her Shoes” fundraiser. The work they do to heal the broken is beyond measure. I know that life can change within minutes, and when disaster strikes, it’s comforting to know there is help. In 1987, Blackwell’s Garage was awarded the first Good Neighbor Award by the American Red Cross for help in providing and servicing the first disaster relief van in Cole County. In addition, I’ve always been in awe of the help that the Samaritan Center provides to so many people who find themselves down on their luck. These nonprofit organizations are very successful. It would be detrimental to the health of our community if they did not exist. WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR IMMEDIATE AND LONG-TERM GOALS AS COUNTY CLERK? Since I took office, we have purchased new voting equipment, which will save the county money on programming and printing costs of the ballots in the long run. In addition, new poll pads allow for easier sign-in experiences for voters upon checking into their polling location. We live in a very busy world, and in order to get people to vote, the process has to be efficient and easily accessible. In the future, I would like to see a ballot-on-demand system that would allow us to check in the voter and print a ballot specific to that voter. Our current system of ballot ordering is based on previous election turnouts. HOW DO YOU HOPE TO IMPACT THE COMMUNITY WITH YOUR ROLE? I hope to encourage people to register and get out and vote. Voting is a constitutional 116 | September/October 2016

right that has been fought for. It disappoints me to have an election and only get a 10 or 12 percent turnout. With Cole County being the county holding the state capital, I would like for us to set a precedent for the rest of the state and have the highest voter turnout. WHY ARE YOU PASSIONATE ABOUT YOUR POSITION? I believe the strength of the country rests in the vote of the people. GREATEST PERSONAL CHALLENGE WHERE YOU HAVE EXPERIENCED SUCCESS: Running for a public office is a lot of work. It is a year-long job interview with the public. When I decided to seek the county clerk position, I owned and operated a full-time business while also running a small farm. I had no free time — I attended as many local community gatherings as possible, put up signs, knocked on doors, and made phone calls seeking support for my bid. Two months before the election, my wife was diagnosed with cancer. Through all of it, I found strength in God, my family, and my community. On December 31, 2014, when I was sworn in as the Cole County clerk with my wife beside me, I was humbled by the amount of faith Cole County had placed in me.

WHAT ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF? I am very proud that all three of our children are well educated, productive members of society. They are great parents to our grandchildren. I truly believe grandkids are God’s blessing for having children. FAVORITE PLACE TO SPEND A SATURDAY AFTERNOON: I enjoy spending time at our farm. It’s so peaceful watching the cows graze in the field. FAVORITE TV SHOW: “Modern Family” FAVORITE COMFORT FOOD: Ice cream. IDEAL VACATION: Relaxing somewhere on a beach. SOURCE OF INSPIRATION: My wife. WHAT IS A FUN FACT ABOUT YOU THAT MOST PEOPLE DO NOT KNOW? I enjoy computers and surfing the internet. I do not know how we survived all those years without it. When I started working at Blackwell’s Garage in 1981, there were five people working in the office. Every estimate that was written had to be looked up in the labor time guide, and we had to manually look up the parts needed for every job. Then we had to call the parts store to see if the parts were available. With the internet, everything is at your fingertips.

or Delsa Byrd, a recovering alcoholic and drug addict, living life to the fullest no longer has anything to do with drugs and everything to do with feeling confident again in her own skin. She gives credit to an organization she says changed her from the inside out — Dreams to Reality. “Once I got clean and sober, the way I dressed didn’t fit me anymore, and I had low self-esteem,” says Byrd. “They gave me my self-worth back when I didn’t know where to find it.” Dreams to Reality, which started 16 years ago as a grassroots effort in Jefferson City by three local women, provides free work attire to help women in transition feel confident and prepared for employment opportunities. While the mission remains the same, the dream continues to expand. Dreams to Reality, a United Way agency, serves more than 200 clients each year by individually working with them on a professional wardrobe put

together solely by generous community donations. “We have professional image consultants who are great at helping people style clothes, and they personally pick out a week’s worth of clothing that looks great on the client,” says Lorie Smith, executive director of Dreams to Reality. “They leave with 25 free items that will make 35 different outfits.” In order to continue giving generously to clients, Dreams to Reality relies on the clean, professional clothing and accessories,

including shoes and handbags, donated to their store by local women with big hearts. In February, the agency moved into a new building in order to offer a retail boutique where all women in the community can shop. “A retail boutique gives us sustainability and an ongoing fundraising opportunity,” says Smith. “It also provides women a chance to shop for high-quality clothes at an affordable price while also greatly helping a nonprofit organization in our community.” It was the mission of helping women that drew Michele Caywood to the organization. She now serves as president of Dreams to Reality. But it is the story of the women, and their unwavering resilience, that touches her heart the most. It’s a gift that keeps on giving. “It is a very humbling experience to hear the stories of these women, what they’ve been through, and the strength they possess,” says Caywood. “Helping Delsa and all women in transition is a true privilege. CITY CHARACTER dynamic support and generosity of the Jefferson City community and United Way.” Caywood also notes it wouldn’t be possible without the 25 dedicated volunteers working each week sorting and tagging clothes, assisting in the retail boutique, and serving clients. Dreams to Reality also has twelve board members passionate about carrying out the mission of the organization, which includes making sure one board member is a client. “We, as a board, need to pay close attention to the needs of our clients. Having a client on the board gives us that strong voice,” says Caywood. Byrd isn’t a board member, but her voice and appreciation for how Dreams to Reality has changed her life rings loud and clear. It’s a story about coming out of the ashes, reborn to a whole new you. It’s a chance Byrd wants for everyone. “Don’t be afraid to allow someone to help you and show you something different. Trust the women there, because they know what they’re doing,” says Byrd. “You can put on clothes that make you feel good or put on clothes that make you feel great. Go with great!”

DESTINATIONS Medieval Mist in the barrel room, or Noble Norton on the Vineyard Patio. Les Bourgeois Vineyards, in Rocheport, sits on the top of a bluff overlooking the Missouri River Valley. This spectacular view pairs perfectly with a Riverboat Red or White, Chardonel, or Merlot. Take your glass out to the A-Frame for a scenic picnic spot. Westphalia Vineyards, in Westphalia, “The Pearl of Osage County,” boasts time-honored, natural wine making processes. Sample their award winning Sweet Success, Norton Reserve, or Cabernet Franc from this historic farmland. Each year, the wine trail has about three ticketed food and wine events that follow a theme. This year, the theme is Irish-influenced

food. Each location provides a food and wine pairing based on the theme. Guests purchase a ticket and start their adventure at any of the participating wineries. At the first winery, participants present their ticket for a free wine glass. The tickets are good for two days, so guests are welcome to spend a leisurely weekend exploring much of Missouri’s wine country. This year’s final wine trail event is called Sip & Soup, which takes place November 5 and 6 at all six wineries. Six different soups will be paired with Missouri wines during a casual weekend of good food, good wine, and good company. Visit missouririverwinetrail.com for more information on the trail and individual wineries.

FIVE TURN KNOT S E V E N LO C A L G U Y S E N T E R TA I N M I D - M I S S O U R I W I T H C L A S S I C AND CONTEMPORARY HITS. by L AUR E N SAB L E F R E IM A N

I

n the past seven years, Five Turn Knot has played everything from country to rock to ’80s tunes at bars, private parties, and charity events around mid-Missouri. Though their set list varies based on the crowd’s demographic, one thing remains constant for the cover band’s seven members — their favorite songs to perform are the ones that make the crowd go wild. “I really love doing those songs where you play the first three or four notes and everyone knows it and everyone cheers,” says lead vocalist David Baker. “That’s when you get that jolt of energy and adrenaline. It doesn’t even matter what the song is, it’s the audience reaction to it.” Though he currently spends his days working in medical billing, Baker (fittingly) attended Baker University, in Kansas, on a vocal performance scholarship and studied some opera along the way. When he met Conrad Hildebrand while working on a production of The Wedding Singer with The Capital City Players, the two music buffs got an idea. “Conrad and I got to know each other while working on the show, and he approached me and asked if I had ever been in a band,” Baker says. “He said he had some people in mind, and it all took off from there.” Five Turn Knot formed in 2009 with five members. The name came from a detail that caught Baker’s attention when, one day, he was relaxing in front of the TV and watching a show about Abraham Lincoln.

“They flipped to a museum plaque with a noose and referenced the infamous five turn knot,” Baker says. “I took it back to the band, and we decided we couldn’t be the infamous five turn knot, but we could be Five Turn Knot.” Today, the band has seven musicians — Hildebrand on rhythm guitar and vocals, John Breeden on guitar and lights, Brad Barrowman on bass, Dana Johnson on drums, Cam Lupkey on lead guitar, Pat Carey on keyboard, and Baker on lead vocals. “We started off doing the bar scene, and we still do some of that, but we play a lot of bigger clubs, especially at the Lake, private events, and quite a few weddings,” Baker says. “When we first started out, there were a couple years where we had

a handful of weekends off and the rest we were playing. As we’ve gotten older, we try to take some weeks off to add to our production value, work on our show, lights, sound, and stage presence.” Though they are always ready with old favorites, the band also strives to constantly learn new music. The variety keeps fans of all ages entertained, from 20-somethings to 70-somethings. “When we’re playing at the Lake, we may have older people at the beginning of the night,” Baker says. “REO Speedwagon, Journey, they really get into that. As the night progresses, the younger kids will come in and you start playing the newer stuff, but hopefully you’ve intrigued the older people enough that they stay.” Five Turn Knot’s ability to adapt and change with their growing success over the past seven years has kept the band fresh. “We try to keep the old hits, but also add new stuff,” Baker says. “If something comes out on the radio that is really hitting the charts and the younger people are going crazy over it, we will do our best to learn it and create that party at every show we do.” Baker says he and Hildebrand meet for lunch two or three times each week to talk about the band and its future. As it has been front the start, Five Turn Knot’s goal is to have as much fun as possible while getting gigs in new cities and venues. “We are always looking ahead and spend a lot of time doing that,” Baker says. “We stay very busy.”

EE WILBERS HAS HAD A LOT OF HUNTING SUCCESS in his life, starting with squirrels, graduating to deer, then on to elk and bear, with a few animals sprinkled in between. He enjoys being the hunter more than the hunted — he’s been on both sides, so he would know. “I was salmon fishing in Alaska with my partner’s 22-year-old son, Dylan [Lueckenotte],” Wilbers says. “We were on the bank. We’d fished there for five days and never had any problems. I was about 100 yards from the boat, and I told Dylan that if a bear comes, leave your fish on the bank. “So I’m fishing,” he continues, “and I keep hearing something behind me. All of a sudden, I hear a big crunch!, and I turn around to see this big bear standing maybe 30 yards from me. He stands up on his back legs, looks at me, and I holler to Dylan, ‘Bear!’ They tell you not to run, but I ran anyway.” Understandable. The bear started running after him, and the bear was winning the race. “When I went to where Dylan was standing,” Wilbers says, “the bear was right on my tail, he was probably only ten yards behind me. Luckily, he stopped to eat the fish, and I jumped in the boat. It was a big old brown bear, in the same family as the grizzlies. He was probably about four or five years old, and when

SAM B. COOK IN MEMORIAM. by M E G AN WH IT E H E A D

n January 9, 1902, Central Bank took root in our community. Founded by former governor Lon V.

Stephens, the Central Missouri Trust Company began its legacy with Sam Cook as its president. In July, Cook’s grandson, Sam B. Cook, who led Central Bank since 1961, passed away. He was 91 years old. The elder Sam Cook, with other Jefferson City leaders, worked tirelessly in the early 1900s to secure our city as the state’s capital. Under his leadership, the Central Missouri Trust Company moved 158 | September/October 2016

into its first location, on the corner of High and Madison streets, not far from the new capitol building for which Cook fought. To further cement his legacy as an important community leader, his bank was built with the same stones used to build the capitol. Over the following years, Central Missouri Trust Company’s success grew in accordance with Cook’s dedication to growing Jefferson City. Upon Cook’s death, the bank was

bank and brought about further growth, to the bank and to Jefferson City. Under Sam B. Cook, a new location was opened. This new site, three blocks from the original location, won an award from the American Institute of Architects. In 1969, the bank become the Central Trust Bank, which was shortened again, in 1987, to Central Bank. Under the leadership of Cook and his brother, Howard W. Cook, Central Bancompany Inc., consisting of 13 banks in Missouri, was formed in 1970. Central Bancompany has grown to be one of the most prominent bank holding companies in Missouri due to the leadership of Sam B. Cook. It is also continually listed on Forbes’ Best Banks in America list. Mr. Cook’s leadership didn’t stop at the bank; he was always heavily involved in Jefferson City and Missouri philanthropies. He was chairman of the board of commissioners of the Jefferson City Housing Authority. He worked with the city’s Environmental Quality Commission. He helped open the Jefferson City YMCA. Statewide, he was involved with the State Highway Commission, Missouri Chamber of Commerce, the UM Board of Curators, and the Missouri Bankers Association. He was also on the boards of many higher education institutions, including William Woods University, Washington University, and MU. He established a chair in economics at MU and contributed to Yale University and Washington University. The Sam B. Cook Healthplex, at Capital Region Medical Center, was named for him due to his financial donations. He also helped fund the construction of SSM Health – St. Mary’s. Sam B. Cook’s legacy is firmly rooted in Jefferson City. His work with Central Bank, his dedication to the improvement of our community, and the relationships he made throughout his life here will have a lasting impact. Thank you, Mr. Cook.

or many, family is a source of inspiration. This is certainly true for Lyssa Surface. After her first child, Lilly, was born, this Jefferson City native channeled her entrepreneurial drive and knowledge (she has an MBA, with an emphasis in marketing) into creating a product for trendy moms. She became increasingly frustrated with bulky diaper bags when using public restrooms. “Being a young, busy, new mom myself, I needed something functional yet stylish,” Lyssa says. Her problem created the idea for a new business. Named after her daughter, LillyBit makes clutch-sized, stylish diaper bags that are still functional. Lyssa started tracking inventory of conventional diaper bags and found that most of the items that new moms were carrying around went unused. With LillyBit’s diaper clutch, she created a tri-fold design with specific slots for nearly anything

a mom may need. “I asked my mom friends what they used most, and through market research and brand strategy involving focus groups, we discovered that the trifold design, structured after a cosmetic case, in a handbag, cross-body, wristlet bag was what moms were looking for,” Lyssa says. “We have a line of patented diaper clutches, two diaper bags, which come in a messenger backpack type and larger duffel type, pacifier pouches, and day packs, all designed for the modern, onthe-go mom.” LillyBit is always updating too. “We’ve recently redesigned to include compartments for phones, lip gloss, keys, EpiPens, and sunscreen,” says Lyssa. Lyssa knew that, to be successful, she would have to master the combination of style and function. After coming up with the idea, she sought help from designer Jessica Schifman. The collaboration resulted in a high-end, fashion-forward product. A unique idea and an entrepreneurial spirit has been the key to Lyssa’s success. She started small, making and selling jewelry from a young age and consulting for small boutiques. Eventually, she found a need in the market that she knew she could fill. Lyssa is passionate about her product, knowing that quality and distinctiveness are important to her and her customers. “I was able to understand where there were gaps in the marketplace and find a solution to a common problem among moms — too much stuff and not an efficient way to carry it all,” she says. Lyssa has grown her business from selling in gift shows to having her products sold in over 1,500 stores nationwide and internationally. By partnering with manufacturer DEMDACO, LillyBit has continued to grow. Visit www.lillybit.com to check out Lyssa’s products. LillyBit’s full line is also available at Carrie’s Hallmark in downtown Jefferson City.
