DEAR FRIENDS , Whether it was hundreds of trees being planted in Buffalo Bayou Park or the Sunset Coffee Building’s restoration at Allen’s Landing, Houston’s birthplace, Buffalo Bayou Partnership’s (BBP) projects were truly “taking root” up and down Houston’s historic waterway in 2014. In record numbers, Houstonians from all walks of life experienced all Buffalo Bayou has to offer by participating in canoe/kayak and bike tours, pontoon boat rides, and a myriad of BBP-sponsored special events. Driven by strong public-private partnerships and historic philanthropic support, Buffalo Bayou’s transformation is demonstrating that our city’s greatest natural resource is having a profound impact on quality of life and economic prosperity. It also is attracting significant levels of national publicity for our city, and offering a valuable recreational and cultural resource for residents and Houston visitors alike. Buffalo Bayou’s transformation has been years in the making but today it is benefiting from the tireless efforts and dedication of BBP’s board and staff, the generosity of individuals, corporations and foundations, and collaboration with public agencies who have supported the waterway’s restoration for decades. It is truly an exciting and momentous time for Buffalo Bayou Partnership. As we complete one of Houston’s most ambitious park projects ever, develop a comprehensive park maintenance program, and continue to plan and implement projects in downtown and the East Sector, we hope you will join us in Buffalo Bayou’s rediscovery and rebirth. Sincerely,

Sis Johnson

Anne Olson

2014 BOARD CHAIR

PRESIDENT

Taking Root

B U F FA LO B AYO U PA R K Buffalo Bayou Park truly took shape in 2014 as various areas were completed and construction began on two visitor centers, the nature play area, and other amazing park amenities. Houstonians also had their first peek at the park’s wildflower and prairie areas, and watched in amazement at the massive planting of 14,000 new native trees.

JOHNNY STEELE DOG PARK

At year’s end, finishing touches were being made to the long-awaited Johnny Steele Dog Park. Named by a special group of donors in honor of Johnny Steele, a highly regarded Houston landscape architect, the twoacre dog park features large and small dog ponds, dog washing areas, and shade structures where pet owners can watch their furry friends run and have fun.

LANDSCAPING

Landscaping of the park stretch from Sabine Street to Montrose Boulevard was completed in September, just in time to see a changing fall landscape. Along with the expansive Eleanor Tinsley Park lawn and garden, enhanced Jane Gregory Garden, and addition of amenities such as benches, drinking fountains and lunar cycle lighting, park visitors could see what the entire park would eventually look like.

BARBARA FISH DANIEL NATURE PLAY AREA

Earthwork for the park’s nature play area got underway this past year. Built on a slope just south of the Lee & Joe Jamail Skatepark, this unique spot will feature a rolling lawn, climbing logs and stones, tree house, and a sand and water zone. The 28,000 square foot area was designed by SWA with assistance from North Carolina State University’s Natural Learning Initiative, which specializes in creating sites for children’s play in the natural environment.

MAINTENANCE AND OPERATIONS

With construction 50 percent completed, the year saw BBP begin ongoing maintenance and operations of Buffalo Bayou Park. Eleven new employees were added to the existing staff including maintenance crews, and Volunteer and Visitor Services Supervisors. In addition, significant equipment was purchased and a new park maintenance facility opened along Memorial Drive.

THE CISTERN

While construction was bustling on land in Buffalo Bayou Park, exciting plans got underway for what lies underground at The Water Works. The Cistern, located below The Brown Foundation Lawn at the eastern edge of the park at Sabine Street, is a one-of-a-kind space that is brimming with possibilities. As large as a football field (87,500 square feet), the site includes 50 massive 25' foot concrete columns that hover over two inches of water. Once serving as the City’s drinking water reservoir (built in 1927), the site was abandoned in 1970. Those who have ventured down into the Cistern are overwhelmed by its raw beauty, reverberating sounds, and light reflections upon the water from overhead hatches opening up to the sky. In 2014, Buffalo Bayou Partnership was awarded a $1.2 million grant from The Brown Foundation to make improvements to the Cistern that will allow the structure to meet City of Houston codes. Once renovations are complete, BBP will transform the unique site into a space for temporary environmental art, including lighting and sound installations.

PARTNERS’ WORK

At year’s end, Harris County Flood Control District had completed its channel restoration work in the park and began to plant hundreds of trees along the bayou’s edge. Other Buffalo Bayou Park partners, the City of Houston and Downtown Tax Increment Reinvestment Zone (TIRZ) #3, initiated plans for the enhancement of Allen Parkway to provide a safer roadway, improved access to Buffalo Bayou Park from neighborhoods to the south, and increased parking. 6

Getting Back To Our Roots

D OW N TOW N SUNSET COFFEE BUILDING

HIKE AND BIKE TRAILS

In cooperation with partner Houston First, the local government corporation that oversees the city’s convention and cultural facilities, BBP began renovation of the historic Sunset Coffee Building at Allen’s Landing, Houston’s birthplace and first port. Significant progress was made throughout the year as new brick was placed on the building’s façade, windows were installed, and the rooftop terrace took shape. This project has been years in the making, and BBP eagerly awaits the building’s completion when the organization will move its offices to the site, a paddle craft and bike rental operation will open, and Houston First will operate a coffee café.

As with BBP’s previous work at Sabine Promenade, where it successfully constructed trails under I-45 and city streets, the organization is once again demonstrating its ingenuity and vision by utilizing existing historic urban infrastructure to build downtown trails. Perhaps one, if not THE most unique trails in Houston, is now under construction. Located between Smith and Milam streets, the $4.6 million trail is funded through the federal Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery (TIGER) program with additional private funds raised by BBP. With the unique TIGER trail nearing completion, BBP is setting its sights on another challenging area and extremely important trail link. Stretching from Fannin Street to McKee Street, a new trail segment will link bayou trails from the west to the East End. Due to existing buildings, an innovative plan is being developed to build the trail in the basements of several structures owned by Harris County and Harris County Flood Control District. Working in collaboration with these public agencies, BBP is in the process of securing trail easements and developing preliminary design plans. Private and Bayou Greenways Initiative funding has already been committed for this project. 8

Making New Roots

E A S T S E C TO R

BUFFALO BEND NATURE PARK

In 2014, construction got underway at Buffalo Bend Nature Park, a 10-acre green space located at the Port of Houston Turning Basin. With a $500,000 grant from the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department (TPWD) and matching funds from BBP and Harris County Precinct Two—the park’s owner—the following enhancements are being made possible: boardwalk, learning station, trails, and interpretive signage. The improvements will add to the park’s existing wetland ponds and natural amphitheater. To extend Buffalo Bend Nature Park to the city’s nearby Hidalgo Park with 23 acres of continuous open space, BBP has acquired a trail easement and property from adjacent property owners. Once completed, Buffalo Bend Nature Park will become a beautiful trailhead along the bayou’s east sector and an important environmental education site for neighborhood school children.

LIVABLE Throughout the year, BBP worked with the Fifth Ward Redevelopment CENTERS STUDY Corporation and Greater East End Management District on the Livable

Centers Study, a Houston-Galveston Area Council (H-GAC)-sponsored planning initiative designed to create walkable, mixed-use neighborhoods, multi-modal transportation choices, and private investment leveraged with public improvements. Six community meetings were held in neighborhoods north and south of the bayou to solicit input from residents. As part of the planning study, sidewalk improvements and hike and bike trail routes were identified to link the Fifth Ward and East End to Buffalo Bayou. Various scenarios also were developed for transforming the land that BBP owns along the waterway. BBP hopes to build off the Livable Centers Study to create a comprehensive master plan from downtown to the Port of Houston in the near future. 9

BUFFALO BAYOU BALL: THE WORKS OF WORTHAM

Long-time and dedicated funder The Wortham Foundation was honored at BBP’s annual Buffalo Bayou Ball. It was very gratifying for the board and staff to publicly recognize Fred Burns, Brady Carruth, Tommy Smith, and Rusty Wortham, the foundation’s trustees (pictured below), who have steadfastly demonstrated their commitment to BBP’s efforts for a quarter century. A founding BBP board member, Brady Carruth has played a leading role in the organization by serving twice as board chair and leading capital campaigns for Sesquicentennial Park Phase II and Buffalo Bayou Park.

BAYOU BUDDIES

Bayou Buddies, BBP’s young professionals group, set a record at the 2014 Bayou Bash by raising nearly $40,000. The afternoon crawfish festival featured live music, lawn games and a popular silent auction. Other social, educational, and volunteer activities were hosted by Bayou Buddies throughout the year.

FUNDRAISING BUFFALO BAYOU PARK CAPITAL CAMPAIGN

There was cause for celebration when BBP reached its $23 million Buffalo Bayou Park fundraising goal to supplement the $30 million catalyst gift from the Kinder Foundation which was commited in 2010. As a result of two board of directors’ challenges, a direct mail campaign, and first-time gifts from many foundations, corporations and individuals, the capital campaign diversified BBP’s donor base, galvanized the BBP board, and raised awareness of our work and Buffalo Bayou.

BUFFALO BAYOU PARTNERSHIP REGATTA

BBP’s 42nd annual Regatta brought more than 500 canoes and kayaks to the bayou shores. Gillman Subaru served as the event’s lead sponsor, helping raise a record $100,000.

PR AND EVENTS

With Buffalo Bayou Park coming one step closer to completion, BBP initiated a series of special events to highlight new park amenities and developed innovative marketing tools to promote all the park has to offer. We also saw our city’s waterway and our organization recognized in national publications such as The New York Times and Conde Nast Traveler. PICNIC IN THE PARK

In April, Picnic in the Park was held to introduce Houstonians to the newly improved Houston Police Officers’ Memorial area. With the new Carruth Bridge, the site now has first-time access to Buffalo Bayou Park. Throughout the day, event attendees enjoyed badminton, horseshoes, bocce ball and other lawn games, as well as lively music, and tasty treats from food trucks.

KBR KIDS DAY

October marked our eighth annual KBR Kids Day. The free family festival, Wild on Buffalo Bayou, featured interactive environmental activities from over 20 non-profit organizations, live music and dance performances, a variety of crafts, and a Halloween costume parade.

TRANSPORTED & RENEWED

In fall 2014, BBP collaborated with Houston Arts Alliance’s Folklife and Traditional Arts Program as it sponsored Transported & Renewed, a community-based contemporary art program in Houston’s East End. From September through November, the area was infused with a series of concerts, performances, and temporary public art. Several BBP-owned properties were the site of film installations and dance performances, as well as the inaugural Bayou Shrimp Festival. Other Transported & Renewed events included biking and walking tours, and a lively parade through East End streets and along Buffalo Bayou—all celebrating Houston’s love affair with movement, transformation, and reinvention.

EVENT COLLABORATIONS

For the second year, BBP was the recipient of proceeds from the Downtown Management District’s popular Blanket Bingo nights at Market Square Park and was a co-sponsor of Unsilent Night, an interactive holiday music parade in Buffalo Bayou Park along with the University of Houston Cynthia Woods Mitchell Center for the Arts.

MEDIA PARTNERSHIPS

In anticipation of Buffalo Bayou Park’s opening celebration, BBP secured major media sponsorship packages from the Houston Chronicle and KHOU-Channel 11, including public service announcements, print advertisements, and even a television special.

NEW WEBSITE

After more than a year of planning, BBP completed a comprehensive overhaul of its website. With a fresh, clean look, visitors are able to keep up-to-date on all bayou activities from their mobile phone, tablet or laptop. Special features include a map showcasing Buffalo Bayou Park’s destinations and amenities, a section highlighting recent news stories, and a calendar promoting events and boat tours.

VO L U N T E E R S Whether planting wildflowers in bayou parks or removing weeds and invasive species along the waterway’s hike and bike trails, volunteers are playing an increasingly important role in BBP’s on-going maintenance program.

In 2014, more than 1,000 community volunteers contributed approximately 2,000 hours of service to expand BBP’s workforce and stretch its operating budget. Through a new initiative at Buffalo Bayou Park, 1,000 volunteers from the Harris County Sheriff’s Office contributed more than 2,500 hours of in-kind labor. To recruit volunteers, staff participated in 21 community outreach events and gave presentations to numerous corporate groups and civic organizations. At year’s end, we also established an exciting docent program with Katy Prairie Conservancy.

B AYO U C L E A N - U P In partnership with Harris County Flood Control District, Shell Oil Company and the Port of Houston Authority, BBP continued its ongoing clean-up of Buffalo Bayou waters. Using our highly effective “Bio-Vac” and other specially-designed boats, BBP’s field crew and community service workers rid the bayou of nearly 3,000 cubic yards of trash and debris in 2014. Over 575 community service workers from several Harris County restitution and court programs contributed more than 6,500 hours working alongside BBP staff members. Due to our efficient operation, Harris County Flood Control District asked BBP to expand its program to Brays Bayou, where the organization now maintains the 110-acre Arthur Storey Park.
