The Earth’s climate is undergoing rising temperatures right now, but the right steps can still be taken.

Global climate change is a reality, and a presentation at Bucks on Oct.16 revealed that the world must take action now in order to stop it. “Climate change is real, it is happening now, it is caused by humans, and we have the means to avoid the worst if we start acting now,” said Steve Bacher, director of e-

The 2006 documentary "An inconvenient Truth" was about Gore's effrots to educate people about global warming. Bacher's "Climate reality: 2013 Update" mainly focused on the fact that if carbon

dioxide increases our temperature does too. Scientists have been able to figure this out by studying ice core samples. Carbon has never gone over 350 parts per billion, but currently it's at 400 parts per billion andthat number is continuouslyrising. “As temperatures continue to rise, that doesn't mean we won't have cold days, but on average the temperature con-

tinues to move up," Bacher said. "Temperature affects society more than we realize. As the temperature increases more water evaporates, so then there is more moisture in the air, so all the precipitation is more intense, every rainstorm is more intense, every snowstorm is more intense, and when it's drought time, every drought is more

By handing out a series of surveys to students the SGA has worked hard at finding out the concerns of students. The sur-

veys have since been completed. The SGA worked closely with the Student Life office, the clubs and the organizations, the faculty, and the administration, along with the student athletes to resolve all of these problems found in the surveys. As of right now, the SGA has a few methods in the works for improving the current state of Bucks’ One of the ways is improving the athletics program. They plan

on using promotion both on and off campus to increase participation. They hope to improve things by also addressing the specific problems that our student athletes face. They will also be creating handicapped seating in the Gateway Auditorium. Another improvement stems from some complaints that the designated smoking areas are too close to the early learning center. So the prices of grain here went up. The U.S. did something similar with corn and soybeans. So the hotter the temperatures, the more our agriculture suffers. Australia recently had to add two more colors to their weather maps because it has been so hot, Bacher said. “2012 is the 36th consecutive year that the global temperature is above the 20th century average,” Bacher said, adding that climate change can also result in more natural disasters like superstorm ‘Sandy.’” Bacher said climate change

They also hope to provide a pavilion to properly shield the students from the uncooperative elements during inclement weather. A club review committee was formed in order to ensure that the clubs and organizations at Bucks are able to operate smoothly and are able accomplish all their goals. There were budget hearings scheduled to be held a couple of weeks ago for the clubs to plead their case for additional funding. The set time did not work for many though as only two or three clubs showed up. The SGA did not give up as they tapped their club treasurer Zachary Maszlanka to phone the different clubs. The phone calls gave the clubs a chance for one-onone time to make their case

for more funding. “i personally gave five to 10 minute phone calls with as much club members i was able to contact, and had them give me their advocacy as to why they should receive the amount of money they proposed,” Maszlanka said. “After finishing every budget, and ascertaining as to what those clubs would receive capital wise, we are satisfied that this new system work as effectively as it did, and we look forward to doing it for the next couple semesters.” Additional travel improvements have also been made as there will now be SePTA transportation to Bucks on the weekends. This will allow the students to access the campus for classes or for the resources it provides. The overall improvements should increase better enrollment too as O’Brien and his team have made Bucks a better place to attend.

The wizarding world returns to film Bucks-news.com

The week of October 22, 2013

BY: CHRIS GIUSTI

World famous author J.K Rowling is back again, but this time by writing a screenplay for a new movie set in the world of wizarding and witches. Rowling recently revealed on her Facebook page that she is involved in the making of a new movie called “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.” The title sounds familiar to some due to the fact that it is a book that Harry and his friends read at Hogwarts. “This film sounds like it could be interesting, I am looking forward to seeing JK Rowling branch out,” said Ronnie Giusti, 23, an astronomy major from Warrington. Rowling stated in an interview with ‘The Independent,’ “Although it will be set in the worldwide community of witches and wizards, where I was so happy for 17 years, ‘Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them’ is neither a prequel nor a sequel to the Harry Potter series, but an extension of the wizarding world.”

That has not hindered even mild Rowling fans from saying they would still watch it. “I will definitely watch it when it comes out on DVD, I have never heard of it before so I am curious to see what she does with the idea,” said Mike Lafferty, 19, a sports management major from Chalfont. “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” is story originally written by Newtown Scamander in 1927 according to entertainment.time.com. Warner Bros Entertainment group will get the honor of producing this film which is supposed to begin casting in the near future. Many students at Bucks grew up watching and reading the Harry Potter series, so to hear this got some people quite excited about J.K Rowling’s new project. “I will definitely go see it,” Giusti said when he was asked about the movie coming out in theatres. “I thought she did a great job doing the Harry Potter books and putting them into a movie. I think most fans know what

Rowling is capable of and the uniqueness of her work.” Whether you were a hardcore Harry Potter fan, the one who got upset when the last movie came out two years ago, or just a mild fan that did not get too into the series but enjoyed Rowling’s work, there is a mutual interest into this new movie. As expected, there will be some previous fans that do not think this new movie is a good idea. “I don’t think it’s a good idea for a new movie like Harry Potter because the idea of witches and wizards isn’t that big right now” said Andrew Zyck, 19, a sports management major from Warrington. Many people may agree with that but it is still early in the process so once trailers come out it may change some peoples mind that have similar point of views as Zyck. Any fan of the world of witches and wizards stay tuned because JK Rowling is coming back to Platform 9 ¾ on a different express.

Just five blocks from the Museum of Art in Philadelphia awaits a giant haunted prison that was built 184 years ago. This extravagant building is better known as Eastern State Penitentiary, and during Halloween, “Terror Behind the Walls” is one of the best attractions to go to in the United States, where about 140 ghouls await inside the prison, ready to frighten you. Year after year, during the weeks leading up to Halloween, the supernatural penitentiary is full of demented creatures, and supposed escaped prisoners. Thousands of people line up to go through this historical building for the scare of a lifetime. You are not safe in line either though. There’s no time for relaxation, and eyes must be wide open from the getgo. For this reason, you have to sign a waiver before entering. As you embark on your journey through the prison, you will enter past the eerie walls, but first a choice must be made: let the monsters inside touch you or not. This adds another element to the attraction as a whole. There are six main attractions total throughout the entire prison, each with a specific, horrifying theme of its own. Before entering each of the attractions, it is never known

if the people that lurk behind the walls will separate you from your group or let you stick together. Walking through the prison alone is scary enough; now, there’s anticipation at every single corner as you’re ready for the next deformed prisoner to pop out, and scare yourself senseless. The six attractions include “The Experiment;” a 3-D area in which it is not certain if the walls are going to move, and morph into a person. Another is the “Night Watch,” and the darkness factors in intensely. Not being able to see what may be creeping right in front of you brings out much fear. Also included is the jail cell-themed “Lock Down,” and the disturbing “Infirmary” amongst others. Although the actors are fantastic, the parts are played amazing and a lot of work is put into making Eastern State Penitentiary look haunted and horrifying, the fact of the matter is, this ancient prison is already haunted and has been for many years. Many inmates were mistreated, abused and held to strict limitations. The angry spirits of the prisoners are said to continue to haunt the prison halls. The weird feeling that approaches when walking up to this astonishing penitentiary is indescribable to say the least. It is a historical, haunted commodity and has

Members of the Pre-Med Society put their hearts to the test to help the American Heart Association raise $15,340 in donations through the annual “HeartChase” event on Oct. 12. The event is planned annually, and it consists of a mix between a scavenger hunt, a race, and multiple “heart healthy” events in Newtown, according to Dareen Sardar, student advisor for the club. The competitors were required to download a race specific application, which logged the points the teams earned throughout the race. Each team consisted of two to five players that needed to work together in order to score points. The teams moved around from station to station, performing various heart-healthy activities. These activities included jumping rope and CPR exercises. There was no fee for competition in the event. However, the coordinators of the event asked for a donation to the American Heart Association (AHA). The Pre-Med Society raised $150 for the donation through a bake sale last week. The total goal for donations was $15,000, but it

was exceeded by the participants on the day of the event. Members involved in the race were Sardar, Valerie Guerrero, Joe Benedict and Kayt Navarro. Anthony Zaffino, co-president of the club, was mostly responsible for the bake sale. “You always hear about the runs and walks for fundraising, but this [event] was totally out of left field,” Sardar said. “It was a lot of fun, and it brought the Pre-Med Society together.” The Pre-Med Society ended up competing with four members, and placed in third out of 14 participating teams. The Pre-Med Society plans to compete in the event again next year with the goal of winning it all. The idea to participate in the event came from Tina Permar from the Wellness Center, who approached Sardar with the idea. The idea came to fruition and culminated in the donation of $150 by the PreMed Society. In regards to the immediate future, the Pre-Med Society has plans for some similar events. “There are a lot of walks in October in Philadelphia, Valerie Guerrero, the club treasurer said. We are probably going to do one of those.” The Pre-Med Society also

has plans to attend the Association of American Medical Colleges annual meeting of 2013. It is basically a convention to network and share information about academic medicine according to Zaffino. The Pre-Med Society is a

club comprised of nine total members. Their master plan is to network and share information about the process of enrolling, and how to get in to medical school. “We try to spread information,” Zaffino said. “We are here to present opportunities

to each other. We network information to students.” The Pre-Med Society has meetings every Monday, at 3 p.m. in Founders Lounge, and every Wednesday at 11:30 a.m. in the Gallagher Room in the Rollins Center.

Digital gaming club is powering-up Bucks-news.com

The week of October 22,2013

Despite the Digital Gaming Club’s shaky semester of searching for a new president, the club is still thriving and looking forward to an even better year of gaming at Bucks.’ When the previous club president left Bucks last semester with no successor in sight, it was nearly game over for the club. After weeks of searching, the club found Roger Kuna, 19, a biology major. Kuna has stepped up as the new club president, and intends to make the club as great as it was last semester. Kuna said the club’s mission is to, “Create an environment where people can express their passion [for gaming].” Members will find themselves amongst other friendly and like-minded individuals, who will be able to play a wide range of games over several consoles that the club has acquired such as Game Cube, Wii, Nintendo 64 PlayStation 2 & 3 and Xbox. An upcoming event for the club will be a “Fatal Frame” booth during Bucks’ Halloween celebration on Oct. 31 from noon to 2 p.m. Kuna

said the club intends to fully immerse students in the infamous survival-horror game called “Fatal Frame” for a fun afternoon of thrills. Kuna also expressed the club’s interest in hosting more campus-wide gaming tournaments at the college. Last year, the club was at the peak of their success when they hosted a gaming tournament that brought in nearly $300 for the club.

For this semester, one tournament that is currently in the works for the club is a “Student vs. Staff” tournament, where students will be able to face off with their favorite staff members in a variety of video games. There is no set date for this event at the time. The club will also be hosting fundraisers and charities later this year, such as the Childs play Charity, which is

In years past, the club had a dedicated membership. Just last year, the clubs membership doubled from 30 members to 60 in one semester

alone. Those interested in joining the Bucks gaming community, helping the club grow and thrive or just enjoy having fun with friends are urged to join. Meetings are held at Founders Hall in room 157 on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 3:45 p.m.

The Wellness Center at Bucks is a great place for students to get a break from classes and to get in shape. The equipment, while workable, is need of an upgrade.

BY: SYDNEY TASEY Centurion Staff

The fitness room in the Wellness center provides a healthy lifestyle choice for daytime students at Bucks, but what it lacks in equipment it makes up for in convenience. Since November, there have been minimal upgrades like a new leg-press machine. Most of the equipment is very serviceable, but is out of date. “The more students that use the fitness room, the better chance of upgrades,” said Tina Permar, the Health and Fitness Coordinator of the gym. Permar went on to discuss the major benefits of the Wellness Center. “It’s free, you do not need to hire a trainer, it helps prevent obesity, and there has been a study shown that students who work out get better grades.” Most of the students here at Bucks have to commute from far away and already have the concern for gas prices, on top of all the other expenses that come along with being a student. Bucks student and fitness room patron, Christina Marie Curry, commutes from Bensalem and said how the Well-

of driving all the way to his gym. The Wellness center provides a non-judgmental, proactive environment. There are also several motivating quotes posted on the gym walls to encourage its participants. Permar is willing to help students if they need new workout ideas or help learning how to use the equipment. Permar expressed her willingness to expand as long as more people are using the center. “If there is need for more space, it will happen.” With the new addition of the Linkz Center, the Wellness Center can be hard to spot, but it is to the far left of the coach’s offices. This might hinder newer students from using the gym’s resources. “Linksz is new and the Wellness Center is hidden,” Kellee Marie Keifer, a biology major said. “Only sports people really know about it.” Students interested in staying healthy while living the college student life need only bring their library card to the Wellness Center and fill out a form with Permar. When more people start to utilize the gym services at Bucks, it will receive equipment improvements as well as an expansion.

Shooting for a better season SPORTS

The Bucks Women’s basketball team is gearing up for a new season as new and old members re-energize to rebound from a 2-15 season last fall. After finishing last season with 15 losses, the main goal of the Centurions entering this season is to work on improving that record. With the returning player’s experience, and the new player’s charisma, the Centurions are focusing on winning as many games as possible this season. “We are in a rebuilding process,” said head Coach Lori Sullivan. “We are just focused on winning our first game, and we are approaching the season a game at a time.” Training camp for the Centurions begins Oct.1 and they will have over a month to practice together. The Centurion’s first game takes place on Nov. 12, against Delaware County Community College. The Community College of Philadelphia and Lehigh Carbon follow after that. As Sullivan enters her third year as head coach, she already knows how the competition is going to be. “Our

With a year of experience under their belts, the Women’s basketball team is looking for better results this season.

biggest threat this year is going to be Northampton,” Sullivan said. “That team is always a challenge.” As far as the record goes, the expectations are high for both the returning players, and the new players being added to the roster. The team is hoping they can add some height to the roster to give an advantage on the court. One of the returning players, Regina Karluah, has high hopes for improving the team’s success this season. “We are strong on defense and offense, but we need to just focus on gaining experience on the court and work

harder every day in practice,” Karluah said. “Everyone needs to play with more heart and confidence on both sides of the court, and if that happens we will win more games.” Many of the struggles last year were a result of a lack of experience and confidence, but the team is focused on working harder to become a better team. “I want to bring confidence and positive energy to the team,” Karluah said. If this team has just one player to lead us in the right direction, we can be very successful.” “I hope the new players

“I’m glad to see the team beginning to succeed on the field, Bekka Cain, an 18year-old education major said. I’m hoping this positive energy can lead to more wins for the team.” The question many Eagles fans are asking is, “Why is the team struggling.” The team leads the entire NFL in rush yards per game (178.5) and is third in the league in total yards per game (449.8) according to Nfl.com. Clearly with those statistics head coach Chip Kelly’s new offense seems to be working, but should fans blame the defense for the amount of losses? The Eagle’s defense is ranked last in the league in total yards allowed per game (420.2) according to Nfl.com. Although the new offense seems to be running smoothly, football fans around Bucks are starting to wonder if Kelly is good enough to coach both sides of the field. “I think Chip Kelly has a lot of potential,” Christian Huffman, a 19-year-old,” criminal justice major said. “Transitioning from college football to professional is not easy, but if he can figure out how to coach more defensively, the Eagles will be in a great position.” Many other students are excited to see how the rest of

the season will play out. Many are worried the Cowboys may finish with the division title. “As an Eagles fan, nothing hurts more than to see the Dallas Cowboy at the top with you,” Deshawn Jackon, a 19-year-old business major said. “It makes me sick, I hope the Eagles can figure out a way to win the division this year.” The reason Eagles fans are not confident about their team’s chances against the Cowboys is because they will be facing a powerful offense. “Dez Bryant is having a really good year this year, and our defense is struggling,” Olivia Bucci, a 20-year-old early education major said. “We need to stop him from having a big game, along with Romo.” Last year, the Eagles had one of the worst records in the NFL, finishing 4-12. Although the team is on track to finish with a better record, there are still many setbacks that could prevent them from making the playoffs. The team seems to be coping well offensively without wide receiver Jeremy Maclin, but now starting quarterback Michael Vick is dealing with a hamstring injury. Now the team faces the difficulty of finding a starting quarterback. Backup quarter-

added to the roster help make a difference with their energy and dedication.” Shooting guard Cassandra Gainey is one of the new players being added to the Centurion roster. She hopes she can bring her scoring ability and experience to the team to make it better. “Winning and dedication is the key to success. As far as winning basketball games, we all need to work hard in practice and strive for improvement on offense and defense if we want to be one of the best teams,” said Gainey.
