THE 2022 ULTIMATE CAMP GUIDE

Who’s Ready for Summer? Wow, it’s hard to believe that summer is right around the corner. With the summer months almost here, now is the time to make sure our children have plans, too, so we can continue to work, and they can continue to grow, learn, and have fun. I think the school years start to go by faster each year. What about you? Luckily, there are so many options for summer camps for them–from local day camps to overnight camps–that allow our children to thrive while trying new things, and meeting new friends. I know my brain immediately goes to, which camp should we choose? What is the best match for my children? Should they go with a friend? Can siblings attend together? How can I afford some of these camps? Can my teen get volunteer hours at these camps? There are so many questions to ask before making the decision, and we have found those answers for you within this guide. However, it’s of utmost importance that you speak with the directors and counselors of these camps to get the best feel for the camp. Also in this guide, we have gathered summer camps (both day and overnight) from Baton Rouge, New Orleans, the Northshore, and beyond to help you find a camp that your child will love this summer. The only thing you’ll have to do after is make sure your child is packed and ready to go! Have a great summer,

Are You Ready to Send Your Kids to Camp? By Lauren Labbé Meher Ask parents about their most treasured summer memories, or ask your children what they want to do this summer and most likely, you’ll get the same answer: overnight camp. Perhaps it’s partially due to the popularity of overnight camps in pop culture, for instance, Disney Channel’s Bunk’d, or perhaps it’s the fact that the one thing children look forward to more than anything in the summer is freedom. It’s possible that overnight camps are on your radar for consideration this summer. According to Dr. Michael Thompson, author of Homesick and Happy, “Some six million children in the United States are preparing psychologically to go away to sleepaway camp.” Additionally, parents take all the necessary steps to make sure their children are prepared for camp. But, are you, the parent, ready to

10

THE 2022 ULTIMATE CAMP GUIDE

send your child away this summer? Here are some tips to be sure you’re just as ready as they are.

START SMALL

Before you dive headfirst to a monthlong overnight camp, consider starting small. You can start by choosing a camp within driving distance that offers a few nights at a time. From there, you can do what experienced camp mom Jill Abadie did and try a weeklong camp for your child. “We were a little hesitant with a month-long camp beginning in the third grade, so we enrolled them in a weeklong camp first. Since they handled that experience so well, we felt more comfortable with them spending the full month away,” Abadie shares. The important thing to consider is that every

child is different, and you can choose what is best for each child, whether it’s a three day, weeklong, or month-long camp.

DO YOUR RESEARCH

Since summer camp options are often discovered by word of mouth, Riverview Camp owner Susan Hooks says to start by asking other parents about their experiences. Many parents sending their children to overnight camps have gone to the same camps themselves and are eager to share. Once you find a few camps you and your child are interested in, do some research and get a feel for them. Does it reflect your values or your concept of what a camp should be? Are you comfortable with the atmosphere and the programs the camp has to offer? Knowing that other parents have had successes with their own children at certain camps can also help ease your mind.

MEET THE OWNERS AND DIRECTORS

Camps often reflect the values and personalities of their owners. Try to meet or talk with the owners or directors of the camp and get a feel for their interest in your child. Hooks recommends attending local camp fairs, where you can meet several owners and directors from a variety of camps in one place. Many camps also offer “Camp Parties” where you can get detailed information on the camp and ask questions while introducing your children to the camp staff first hand. Some questions to ask include: What does the camp do in case of a physical emergency or weather emergency?; How do they handle communication (phone calls, emails, packages)?; and What is the camper to staff ratio?

CONSIDER COMMUNICATION

Finding a camp with open communication can help you to feel more comfortable with your child being away. Most camps allow emails, letters from home, and care packages, and some even post daily newsletters and photos.

Local mom Blair Purgerson says that it’s always nice to receive letters from the counselors, but the thing she looked forward to most were the pictures online. Purgerson says, “Most camps offer a secure site where you can login to view daily pictures from the campground. I love scrolling through the pictures of their activities each day, and getting excited when I find one of my daughter. It helps me to see what she is doing and know that she is having fun.” A little communication preparation beforehand can also give both you and your child peace of mind about going away. Another local mom Paula Dawson wrote a letter for each night that her son would be gone, and placed them in an envelope labeled with the day of the week. “It was fun for him because through the letters, he felt a constant connection with us, and we felt confident he knew we were thinking of him on a daily basis,” Dawson says. When making the decision to send a child away to camp for the first time, it’s natural for parents to feel anxious. Some parents feel uncomfortable with their child spending the night at a friend’s house, so the thought of sending them away to camp might be intimidating. However, parents who have sent their children to camp would argue that the benefits far outweigh the concerns. Abadie says, “Summer camp provided my children the opportunity to break out of their normal routine and broaden their horizons away from the temptation of technology, developing leadership skills, and lifelong friends.” Many camp moms simply want their children to develop their own set of treasured memories to cherish as they have. Purgerson says, “Camp was a second home to me, and if our goal in raising children is to prepare them for life and to help them be functioning, independent, members of society, then this is a great step.” Margaret Lee, owner of Camp Fern, seconds this notion by quoting Hodding Carter, “There are only two lasting gifts we can hope to give our children. One of these is roots; the other, wings.” With a little preparation, you can send your child away to camp feeling just as excited as they are when they soar. THE 2022 ULTIMATE CAMP GUIDE

7 Reasons Why Summer Camp is a Good Choice By Family Resource Group

14

THE 2022 ULTIMATE CAMP GUIDE

Summer vacation offers students a respite from lessons and the routine of school. Children might once have eagerly awaited those final days of classes so they could lounge poolside, skip rocks across ponds and spend the long days of the season playing with friends. But many of today’s youngsters spend much of their summer vacations indoors playing with their digital devices. Perhaps that’s why one of the last vestiges of the classic summer vacation escape, summer camp remains such a viable option for parents who want their children to get outdoors once the school year ends. Although children needn’t be in camp all summer long, a week or two can benefit campers of all ages. The following are seven reasons why summer camp might be the right fit this year.

1. EXPLORE TALENTS

Summer camps help young people explore their unique interests and talents. Under an organized, yet often easygoing, camp schedule, children can dabble in sports, arts and crafts, leadership, community support, and so many activities that may not be fully available to them elsewhere.

2. PHYSICAL ACTIVITY

Lots of camps build their itineraries around physical activities that take place outdoors. Campers may spend their time swimming, running, hiking, playing sports, and climbing. This can be a welcome change for children accustomed to living sedentary lifestyles. Regular physical activity has many health benefits and can set a foundation for healthy habits as an adult.

3. GAIN CONFIDENCE

Day and sleepaway camps offer campers the opportunity to get comfortable in their own skin. Camps can foster activities in self-esteem by removing the academic measures of success and

fill in with noncompetitive opportunities to succeed. Campers learn independence, decision-making skills, and the ability to thrive outside of the shadow of their parents, siblings, or other students.

4. TRY NEW THINGS

Camp gives children the chance to try new things, whether that’s learning to cook, exploring new environments or embracing a new sport or leisure activity. Opening oneself up to new opportunities can build character and prove enlightening for children.

5. MAKE NEW FRIENDS

Camp is a great place to meet new people and make lifelong friends. Campers flood in from areas near and far. This provides children with a chance to expand their social circles beyond their immediate neighborhoods and schools. Camps benefit children in a variety of ways. Lessons learned in camp can strengthen values, build confidence, develop coping mechanisms when adversity strikes, and enable campers to make lifelong friends.

6. LESS SCREEN TIME

When we say less screen time, we mean hardly any. The beauty of camp is that it allows children time to disconnect from electronics and reconnect with the great outdoors. Too often, children are glued to their screens, whether it be for their own personal use or even for school. Camp provides them a few days (or more depending on how long the child goes to camp) to put away the electronics and immerse themselves into what’s going on around them. Best of all, smartphones, tablets, and game consoles are definitely not on the campers’ packing list for camp, so there’s no need to even bring them.

7. MAKE MEMORIES

Camp gives children a chance to stay active, learn about themselves, try new things, pick up a hobby, meet new friends, and make memories. Once a child experiences camp, you can bet he will want more camp-filled summers. THE 2022 ULTIMATE CAMP GUIDE

A. Creative/ Performing Arts Camps Specialty art and musical theater camps focus specifically on the arts. Some may offer a variety of art forms to choose from, such as pottery, woodworking, painting, and photography. Others

focus solely on one type of art, such as sewing camp or band camp. Musical theater camps are quite popular and typically showcase a production after a few weeks of rehearsals. Art camps come in all lengths and locations. You can sign your child up for a one-week-long art camp at your local recreational center or find multi-week overnight art camps where they can truly hone their craft.

B. Sports Camps Sports camps usually consist of only one sport that a child plays throughout the day. The main goal is for participants to improve their skills by focusing extensively on a sport they love. Depending on where you live, you can find all types of sports camps like tennis, golf, soccer, baseball, lacrosse, or gymnastics. It is also a way for your child to try a new sport or something only offered during the summer, such as surfing and sailing.

C. Science/Tech Camps If your child loves to code, build, and tinker, then a tech camp may be the right fit. These types of camps make learning about science and technology fun and exciting for kids. They also provide an opportunity for kids to dive deeper into a subject they love, such as working on a science experiment, designing a website, or programming a robot. You can find science and tech camps through local schools, colleges, and museums.

D. Traditional Camps Traditional camps are what you think of when you envision summer camp– canoeing, hiking, archery, relay races, swim lessons, and crafts. They can be considered “jack-of-all-trades” camps because they offer all types of activities for children to try. If your child enjoys exploring and experiencing new things and has not yet found one specific activity that they are passionate about, then a traditional camp is a wonderful choice. They are very common and can be found all over. Some are day camps, while others are overnight experiences where your kids can also learn more independence skills. Overnight camps also offer a more rustic, outdoorsy experience with campouts, cabins, campfires, and activities on the lake. THE 2022 ULTIMATE CAMP GUIDE

How to Handle the Summer Camp Questions in the Pandemic Era

THE 2022 ULTIMATE CAMP GUIDE

Children make cherished memories at summer camp, where many youngsters first discover passions and hobbies they will enjoy for the rest of their lives. Summer 2020 was a camp season unlike any other. Some camps closed their doors due to the COVID-19 pandemic, while others downsized their offerings in an effort to keep campers safe while still providing them with a much-needed outlet. As the 2022 summer camp season approaches, parents may be a little less hesitant about sending their children to camp than they were two years ago. The rollout of COVID-19 vaccines has helped millions of people return to some semblance of normalcy, and that rollout has put summer camp back in play for families. Choosing a summer camp is not always so easy, and it might be especially tricky as the world slowly emerges from the pandemic. The following are some tips for parents as they consider if camp is a good idea this summer.

CONSIDER YOUR COMFORT LEVEL

It’s understandable if parents are hesitant about sending their youngsters to camp this summer. In fact, some camps may still be closed while others may only offer limited day camps this summer. Parents should consider their comfort levels before enrolling children in camp. Vaccines have proven effective, but COVID-19 hasn’t gone away. Parents can ask themselves how comfortable they are sending children to camp, and if they’re hesitant to do so, they can explore their alternatives.

ASK CHILDREN IF THEY WANT TO GO TO CAMP

Everyone is experiencing some measure of pandemic-related burnout, and that includes our children. Children may be sick of wearing masks at school all day

(for those still under mandate), and even if they have loved camp in the past, they may not be looking forward to attending a camp that requires campers to wear masks all day. However, there are camps who have dropped their mask mandates for the summer. Other children might not be experiencing such burnout and may see camp as a way to quell boredom at a time when boredom has seemingly lingered over every day. Either way, solicit your child’s input and let them know their feelings matter regardless of which side of the fence they’re on.

INQUIRE ABOUT CAMP SAFETY PROTOCOLS

When researching summer camps, ask about the safety protocols each camp will have in place. Will masks be mandatory for both campers and staff? How much direct interaction will campers have with each other? Have staff members been vaccinated? What measures are being taken to keep children safe? Camps should have detailed protocols and share those protocols with parents upon request. It’s important to stay up to date with what the camp safety protocols will be regarding COVID-19. The rules have been changing, so stay in contact with your child’s chosen camp so you are also aware of how these changes will affect the camp and campers.

ASK ABOUT ALTERNATIVES

If parents and/or children are hesitant about attending camp in person, ask camp officials if there will be any virtual events or programs this summer. Some camps may be organizing activities like craft projects online, and that can help children overcome the boredom of being stuck at home all summer. Some summer camps may not be fully back to normal, but families won’t have to go without access to summer camps this year. THE 2022 ULTIMATE CAMP GUIDE
