Pet Services Pooches unleash spirit of play at dog camp Dogs are more than pets; they’re members of the family. But when humans leave for work or vacation, our four-legged friends traditionally don’t get an invite. For dog owners who hesitate to leave their dogs for an afternoon or a week, Delta Dog Camp in Oakley and Antioch has the solution. Delta Dog Camp offers doggie daycare for day visits and boarding services for families who go out of town and can’t take their pooch along. “People love their animals like their children, and they need to have peace of mind that their dogs will be well cared for while they’re away,” said owner Kerry Dorn. “When the dogs are here, we treat them like members of our family. They get plenty of love and play. It’s all about making sure the dogs have a good time while they’re here. When they’re happy, we’re happy.” Delta Dog Camp, opened by Kerry and husband David in Oakley in 2009, became an instant success. In the past four years, the Dorns have assembled a roster of more than 900 clients. As a result of the camp’s popularity, the Dorns decided to launch a sister location in Antioch, which opened its doors in 2013. “It was difficult telling our clients that we were booked, so we decided to open a second location,” Dorn said. “This way we can better serve our clients in the Antioch and Pittsburg area. Plus we have clients throughout the county. We have regulars who bring in their dogs from Danville and Walnut Creek because they trust our services and know their dogs are in good hands.” Kerry and David combine more than 30 years of experience in canine training and care. David is a K-9 officer and trainer, while Kerry used to show Boston terriers. Both grew up with dogs in their households and developed a kinship with man’s best friend at an early age. The Dorns shared their love of dogs with their two children, who also work at Delta Dog Camp. What sets the camp apart from other boarding facilities is that the dogs spend more time outdoors than in kennels. They enjoy hours
of social time in the camp’s outdoor and indoor play areas. Dogs are grouped by temperament, so the sociable dogs can play and pal around together while the shy dogs enjoy quiet time resting in the shade. Whatever your dog’s personality, however, “Pool time is what all the dogs love,” Dorn said. “We have pools for dogs of all sizes, so everyone gets to play. The dogs just can’t get enough of it. Even the dogs that are quiet and keep to themselves can’t resist joining in the fun at pool time. “We don’t believe in keeping dogs in cages all day. Dogs are social creatures. They need to be allowed to jump, bark and play. We’ve tried to create a Disneyland for dogs. It’s a huge compliment at the end of the day, when mommy or daddy comes to pick up their dog, that the dog goes to greet them but then runs back to the play area door.” To ensure the dogs’ safety, Delta Dog Camp accepts only dogs that display basic manners. The camp doesn’t accept dogs that are aggressive, have a history of biting, bark excessively or engage in destructive and dangerous behaviors such as digging under, jumping over or climbing fences. To be invited to group play, dogs older than 6 months must be spayed or neutered. Delta Dog Camp is located at 2400 Devpar Court in Antioch and 1315 Main St. in Oakley.
