BOB is here!

A Bethel Island family is safe after a fire destroyed part of their mobile home Tuesday night. ConFire responded to a call of a single-family residential fire at about 6 p.m. Tuesday on Porter Circle in the Willows at Bethel Island mobile home park. When ConFire arrived, they saw smoke and flames coming out of the front of the mobile home. According to ConFire public information officer Capt. Victor Daniel, Engine 95’s quick response was the reason the fire didn’t spread to the nearby homes, nor was anyone seriously injured in the fire. “Luckily, nobody was inside at the time (when firefighters arrived),” Daniel said. “It looked like

Marsh Trust seeks to preserve local history By Jake Menez Staff Writer

“We’re trying to keep the history alive,” John Marsh Historic Trust chairperson Bob Jones said. “This has been a longer-term project than anyone wanted it to be.” The project is the restoration of the 7,000 square-foot sandstone mansion Dr. John Marsh built in 1856, in Brentwood as part of Marsh Creek State Historic Park. The house is in need of restoration and stabilization to keep it around for future generations to enjoy, according to Jones. Since its inception in 1994, the John Marsh Historic Trust has spent more than $3 million in restoration efforts, according to the group’s website. In 2021, the California State Parks Department, which oversees the house as part of the 3,659-acre Marsh Creek State Historic Park, was awarded $1.4 million in grant money, through the efforts of then-Sen. Steve Glazer. The money is intended to help cover the Marsh House’s structural restoration, including stabilization of the building with the new foundation and connecting the new exterior to the building’s existing interior support system as well as the removal of the temporary steel columns that are holding up the second floor. The next step in the process begins in January 2024 with the replacement of

the roof tiles. Jones noted that the tile replacement was originally scheduled for September of this year before being delayed because the tiles were not available. Despite the project not moving forward as quickly as the trust would like, Jones said that park agencies have declared it to be a priority in the coming months and years, even going so far as to claim the restoration would move “full steam ahead.” The John Marsh House is listed by the Library of Congress as a historically significant building. “Built by a pioneer physician be-

tween 1853 and 1856, its history has been ill-starred. Dr. Marsh (possessed of only a BA, not an MD) was murdered soon after the completion of the house; his wife, Abby Tuck Marsh, died slightly earlier from the results of child-birth,” the Library of Congress website reads. “Once the center of a vast cattle empire, the house has gradually declined into a derelict state in the 20th century. Stylistically a cross between a Victorian Gothic ‘cottage’ and an Italian Villa, it now sits in lonely isolation amidst the valleys and hills of northeast Mount Diablo.” It’s this history that first drew Jones

to become part of the trust in 2016 after attending a Heritage Day event and learning more about John Marsh. “Some people called him ‘the meanest man in California,’” Jones laughed while telling anecdotes about Marsh, including his involvement in the Gold Rush, practicing medicine without a license and other sordid tales. To raise further awareness about Marsh as a prominent local figure, the trust put together a documentary – “Dr. John Marsh, 19th Century Yankee – California Pioneer” – that was screened in the Brentwood Community Center on Nov. 28. The 30-minute documentary, put together on a $5,000 budget from the trust’s surplus, includes extensive research about Marsh and reenactments of scenes from his life and can be watched at https://bit. ly/41KWMF5. It ends with a call to action asking for donations to help with the restoration and preservation of the John Marsh House. “The video didn’t make us much money,” Jones said. “But that’s not why we did it anyway. It was always meant to make people more aware of who John Marsh was and get the word out.” More information on the John Marsh House, including ways to donate or get involved as a board member, can be found at https://www.johnmarshhouse.com/ To view a video, visit www.thepress.net/ multimedia

July 6, 1932-Dec. 7, 2023 Barbara Lee Brandt was 91 years old when she passed away Dec. 7, 2023. Barbara Brandt was born Barbara Lee Johnson on July 6, 1932, to Millard and Edith Johnson in Concord, Calif. Barbara grew up in Walnut Creek, and she graduated from Acalanes High School In 1950. At the age of 15, she met the love of her life, Bill Brandt, and the night of her Senior Ball, Bill proposed, and they were married that September. Barbara and Bill had 4 children together. Nance (Dan), Jim (Mary), Robert (Michelle) and Dianna (Tony), 11 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Barbara enjoyed being a full-time homemaker, wife, mother, grandmother and great- grandmother. Her family was her career, and nothing put a smile on her face like the smile she had when kids and grandchildren were with her. Barbara loved to play the card game Pinochle and was part of a group of ladies who were neighbors and close friends who played the game once a month for almost 70 years.

Bill and Barbara moved to Oakley, Calif. in 1974 when they purchased the Ford dealership in Brentwood, which is still family-owned and operated. After making the move to Oakley, Barbara joined the Oakley Women’s club where she was very involved and met so many new friends. Barbara loved to travel with her husband Bill, and was fortunate to travel the world. Their most favorite spot of all was traveling the Hawaiian islands, with Maul being their favorite. They, together with longtime friends Chuck and Martha Thompson of Patterson, Calif,. went there often. Barbara also loved to entertain and plan beautiful dinner parties. She was referred to as the “Hostess with the Mostess.” She had the knack of making every party look easy. In our lifetime, everyone has a friend during each stage of life but only the lucky ones have the same friend in all stages of life. For Barbara Brandt, Phyllis Bolton of Walnut Creek was that friend. Barbara and Phyllis met when they started kindergarten and talked almost every day for 86 years. Barbara will be missed by all and was laid to rest Dec. 20, 2023 at the Union Cemetery in Brentwood next to her husband, Bill Eugene Brandt, who preceded her in death in 2019.

If you pass away intestate (without a will/ trust) the State of California has statutory provisions that will divide your estate, often these provisions are not aligned with your wishes. As you mature and acquire assets, don’t forget to plan for how those assets will be managed and divided upon your departure from this world.

Attendees can earn a one-week gym pass By Jake Menez Staff Writer

LEANDRO Diamond Hills was brought into the mix after Chicaine met the general manager at a Chamber of Commerce event at the gym. For their part, the gym will offer a free one-week guest pass as well as zero activation for all who join as new members the day of the event, according to Chicaine. Finding a donor can be a challenge. Leandro is on her sixth year on the transplant list. She has type O blood, the most prevalent. This also means it can take up to 10 years to receive a kidney from a deceased donor, Leandro said in September following another outreach event. Because of this, finding a living donor plays a huge role in speeding up the process. Leandro’s kidneys are functioning at 10% of normal, which leaves her having to manage three hours of dialysis treatments, three times a week, the minimum, she said. According to Chicaine, potential donors can also visit www.ucdonor.org, fill out the questionnaire and input her information when prompted (Andrea Leandro, date of birth, 10/19/1964) to see if they are a possible match.

White Pony Express to expand its food services White Pony Express looks forward to expanding its food service program to serve its neighbors with a move to new facilities in 2024. White Pony Express will be moving to a larger facility in Concord in early 2024 to meet the demand for healthy food in Contra Costa County. They have 46 nonprofit agencies on their waitlist for food, and the new location will allow them to operate more efficiently and safely and enable future growth, the organization said in a press release. Their mission is to eliminate hunger by getting fresh, healthy food from a variety of sources and delivering it to its

neighbors in need. In the 10 years since their founding, they have benefitted the lives of thousands of people, yet the need remains great, the press release said. Their Food Rescue Program operates seven days a week, procuring a daily average of 12,000 pounds of high-quality, surplus, fresh food from over 70 local food outlets. This nutritious food is redistributed within 24 hours to more than 90 nonprofit partners who feed the needy in the county. Their fundraising campaign ‘ACCESS FOR ALL’ is underway, and all donations up to $250,000 will be matched. To make a donation, visit whiteponyexpress.org/donate-funds.

In today’s ever-changing world, it’s crucial to plan for the future and ensure your legacy is preserved the way you intend. Estate planning is more than just drafting a Will; it encompasses a broad range of considerations to secure your assets and peace of mind. Below are the top estate planning questions, along with insightful guidance to help you navigate this vital process. How does the expiration of Tax Cuts and Jobs Act affect estate planning? The current regulations for federal gifting and estate taxes are set to expire at the end of 2025, potentially affecting lifetime gifting strategies. Understanding these changes and how they might impact your estate plan is crucial. Remember, effective planning can reduce future tax liabilities and ensure your beneficiaries are protected. What should be considered when gifting assets? Consider the types of accounts and assets you’re planning to leave to your heirs. Different assets have different implications for estate taxes and beneficiary income taxes. For instance, retirement accounts and real estate require specific strategies to optimize tax efficiency for your beneficiaries. How does estate planning work with real estate and family businesses? Real estate, family businesses, or shares in a business are often significant parts of an estate. Any estate tax liability is usually the responsibility of the estate, not the beneficiaries. Proper planning ensures that sufficient liquid assets are available to cover potential taxes without the need to sell these valuable assets. Is life insurance part of estate planning? Diamond Hills Sports Club will host an all-day “Gift of Life” event on Jan. 8 in an effort to raise awareness and find a potential kidney or stem cell donor for a Brentwood woman who has been on the donor list for six years. “There isn’t anything much more rewarding than saving someone’s life, especially someone from your own community,” event organizer Perry Chicaine said. Chicaine is also Leandro’s husband. “My wife, Andie, has Type O blood and is battling kidney failure and the clock. Right now, she is considered by UCSF doctors as an ‘ideal transplant’ candidate. So finding a living donor while she is still in good condition is paramount.” The event, from 7 a.m.- 8 p.m. at 1510 Neroly Road in Oakley, is the first of its kind that Chicaine has organized, he said. However, it is something he intends to do “fairly often” in the future to continue to get the word out about opportunities for people to become living donors. Chicaine, Leandro and their family will be on hand to help people register to become kidney donors while a representative of Be The Match will be there to help interested donors collect a DNA sample, which will be used to match stem cell donors and recipients who need a donation to save their lives. “Anything I can do to help my wife and others in need of transplantations receive the gift of life, I’m in,” Chicaine explained of the inspiration behind the event.

got news?

In 2024, stay ahead of the herd with...

Editor: In the midst of this season of lights – Hanukkah, Christmas, and Kwanzaa – many in our communities and around the world are experiencing darkness cast upon them. Whether experiencing the loss of loved ones, carrying the burden of debt, growing more anxious about how to provide for our families under greater uncertainty and insecurity, or feeling the growing fatigue over our daily struggles of being unhoused, rent-burdened, or not belonging, the joy and peace of the season will overlook many. Yet, what I can still see through the darkness is goodness – acts of kindness and compassion coming to the aid and support of those for whom suffering and

struggles have become overwhelming – quiet time comforting another, ordering extra food at a restaurant to offer a takeout box to an unsheltered or rent-burdened family, covering the grocery bill for the customer low on cash, giving the See’s candy sample to a lone elderly person at a bus stop, saying with a smile and eye contact “Good morning” to passers-by on the street, spending time listening to one who has stopped another to talk about how things used to be, and more... May this holiday season remind us that the search for light need not take us far. Take a moment to spread joy...renew hope. Be the light. Chag Sameach. Merry Christmas. Happy Kwanzaa. Taking the mystery out of anxiety disorders

I

t is normal to feel nervous

ings of intense fear or terror about certain situations. These panic attacks may lead to concerns about recurrence. ♦ Social anxiety disorder: High levels of anxiety, fear and avoidance occur during social situations, particularly fear of being judged or viewed negatively by others. ♦ Phobias: Major anxiety is tied to a specific object or situation and a desire to avoid it. There are phobias concerning heights, insects, leaving the home, and more. ♦ Anxiety disorders also can develop in people dealing with substance abuse issues or certain medical conditions.

from time to time, particularly when anticipating a potentially

life-changing event. However, when nervousness is excessive, persistent and intense, or arises from seemingly innocuous stimuli, that could indicate the presence of an anxiety disorder.

What is anxiety?

The American Psychiatric Association says anxiety is a normal response to stress. Anxiety disorders differ from normal nervousness because they involve excessive fear. The APA also says anxiety disorders are the most common mental disorders and affect nearly 30 percent of adults at some point in their lives. It is time to seek help when anxiety interferes with your ability to function; you often overreact when something triggers your emotions; and you can’t control your responses to situations.

What contributes to anxiety disorders? A combination of environmental factors and personality traits can increase the risk for developing anxiety disorders,

Anxiety disorders affect millions of people. There is help for many people to overcome anxiety over time. according to the Cleveland Clinic. These include: ♦ Stressful or traumatic events in early childhood or adulthood. ♦ Certain personality traits like shyness or behavioral inhibition. ♦ Family history of anxiety or another mental health condition. ♦ Physical conditions, including thyroid problems and heart arrhythmias. ♦ Being a woman, as researchers are still studying why women experience anxiety disorders in higher proportions than men.

Some researchers suggest hormonal fluctuations in women are a possible explanation for the higher rates of anxiety.

What are the types of anxiety disorders?

Several types of anxiety disorders exist, but some are more common than others. ♦ Generalized anxiety disorder: It is persistent and excessive anxiety about activities or events, even routine tasks. ♦ Panic disorder: This involves sudden feel-

Treating anxiety disorders

It is important to note that anxiety disorders, while frightening and frustrating, are treatable. The APA says that while each anxiety disorder has unique characteristics, most respond well to psychotherapy (talk therapy) and medications. They can be given alone or in combination. Cognitive behavioral therapy, which is a type of psychotherapy, can help a person react and think differently in certain situations so they feel less anxious. Medications often are prescribed to provide relief from symptoms. The most common medications used are anti-anxiety medications, antidepressants and beta-blockers. – Metro Creative

Teens face more and unique mental health challenges today than ever

M

y experience in private practice has alerted me to a rising trend of

mental health issues among teenagers in recent years. This group, already navigating the turbulent adolescent phase, faces new challenges that challenge their mental well-being. Today’s teen mental health scene is distinctly shaped by various social, cultural, and technological elements, differing notably from previous generations. The teen years are a critical period for developing social, emotional, and mental habits vital for future mental health. During these years, the brain undergoes significant reorganization, establishing neural pathways that persist into adulthood. For example, many adults I see with substance abuse issues used the same substances as a way to cope with their emotions in their teen years. On the other hand, coping skills gained in adolescence will carry on to serve them in adulthood. Adolescence often marks the onset of mental health disorders. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports a marked increase in depression and anxiety rates in the last decade among adolescents.

Photo provided by Kira Monterrey

The current generation of teenagers experiences a world vastly different from that of their parents’ youth. The ubiquitous nature of social media and digital technology has transformed their social interactions and self-perception. While these platforms provide avenues for connection and self-expression, they also bring risks like cyberbullying, social isolation, and exposure to unattainable standards of perfection. Recent studies show an alarming rise in mental health conditions among teenagers, with anxiety, depression, and stress-

related disorders becoming increasingly common. These issues are often intensified by pressures to excel academically and socially, leaving many teens feeling overwhelmed and unsupported. Teens struggling with anxiety, depression, and ADHD often miss school, hurting their academic performance and leading to loneliness, social isolation, and potentially depression. The CDC identifies ADHD, anxiety, and depression as the most prevalent disorders in today’s youth. Often, these conditions coexist; for instance, 75% of teens with depression also experience anxiety, and nearly half exhibit behavioral issues. Mental health problems in teens may be manifest in learning, emotional, and behavioral problems. Signs to watch for include worsened academic performance, behavioral changes, or withdrawal from social interactions. The World Health Organization (WHO) notes that, globally, 4.6% of adolescents aged 15 to 19 suffer from anxiety, while 2.8% deal with depression. Substance abuse and suicidal tendencies are more common in teens with mental health disorders, according to CDC data. The American Foundation for Suicide

3B

Prevention states that 10% of 8th- to 12th-graders have attempted suicide in the past year, with female students more likely to attempt suicide than male students. Neglecting adolescent mental health concerns can lead to chronic issues affecting physical and mental well-being, life quality, and functionality. Risk factors include bad childhood experiences, stress, peer pressure, discrimination, a tumultuous home environment, exposure to violence, harsh parenting, socioeconomic challenges, living conditions, familial stigma about mental health, limited access to support, chronic illnesses, and more. Risk-taking behaviors, often maladaptive coping mechanisms for symptoms, can lead to severe consequences for both physical and mental health. Warning signs include changes in sleep patterns, energy levels, social withdrawal, increased school absences, declining academic performance, reduced motivation, fatigue, suicidal thoughts, selfharm behaviors (e.g., wearing long sleeves in warm weather), restlessness, irritability, and physical symptoms like muscle tension, headaches, and stomach aches. see Teens page 4B

Mental health programs for youth get $150 million from state

improving access to critical behavioral health interventions and services, including those focused on culturally responsive prevention, early intervention, and resiliency and recovery: ♦ $100 million for trauma-informed practices and programs – designed to address the impact of trauma and support the resilience of children and youth by reducing the damage from the effects of bad childhood experiences.Through this award, Department of Health Care Services is expanding access to trauma-informed behavioral health services across various settings in all 58 counties.

♦ $50 million for youth-driven programs – designed to provide a safe space for youth and young adults (ages 12-25) by expanding youth-driven community center programs, where young people can access a variety of services and supports in a single location, and other youth-led practices. The Department of Health Care Services, in collaboration with the Mental Health Services Oversight and Accountability Commission, is expanding youth-driven programs in 30 counties. “As children across California struggle with mental health challenges, we are build-

down these barriers. ♦ Innovative mental health support approaches: Early detection and treatment are crucial for teen mental health. New approaches include teletherapy and online support groups, providing accessible resources. Schools and communities are embracing holistic mental wellness strategies, incorporating mindfulness and peer support. Schools are crucial in supporting teen mental health, with initiatives like counseling services, mental health education, and stress management programs being vital. Parents and guardians are encouraged to seek the tools and knowledge to recognize and address their children’s mental health concerns. A key protective factor is social support. A

positive relationship with a parent, sibling, or friend can significantly impact a teen’s life. Parental tips include engaging in conversations with teens, identifying stressors, aiding in sleep hygiene, encouraging regular meals and routines, motivating school attendance, and exploring counseling options. ♦ The importance of early intervention: Addressing mental health issues in teens at an early stage is vital. Timely recognition and support can prevent long-term psychological impacts, necessitating a collective effort from families, schools, and healthcare providers. Early screenings and interventions, access to care, and various therapeutic options like individual and group therapies, intensive outpatient programs, partial hospi-

talization programs, and residential treatments are available. Therapists focus on promoting social and emotional well-being, helping teens identify and adopt healthy behaviors, and replacing maladaptive behaviors with more beneficial ones. The mental health challenges facing today’s teenagers are intricate and multifaceted. Yet, with increased awareness, targeted support, and efforts to destigmatize mental illness, we can foster an environment that prioritizes and nurtures the mental well-being of our youth. Teens from page 3B ♦ COVID-19 pandemic and its impact: The COVID-19 pandemic has worsened these mental health challenges. Extended isolation, disrupted routines, and pervasive uncertainty have significantly impacted teen mental health. The pandemic highlighted and intensified pre-existing problems and introduced new ones. A noticeable trend is students preferring virtual learning to returning to in-person schooling. ♦ Overcoming the mental health stigma: One major obstacle in addressing teen mental health is the persistent stigma surrounding mental illness. This stigma can deter teens from seeking help, aggravating feelings of isolation and shame. Education and open dialogue are essential to break

That’s why we are launching a new program to The allcove youth drop-in centers aim to increase access to affordable mental health and wellness services – for youth ages 12-25 and their families – that includes behavioral health, physical health, housing, education, and employment support, and linkage to other services.” They will provide culturally relevant services for low-income youth, including LGBTQ+, homeless, and Indigenous youth. Brentwood man headed to Olympics Summer Games await accomplished taekwondo athlete By Sean Tongson Correspondent

The 2024 Paris Summer Olympics are just seven months away. But for a Brentwood athlete, these upcoming Olympics represent the culmination of years of dedication, sacrifice, and hard work. CJ Nickolas, 22, ranked number two in the world in taekwondo in the 80 kilogram division, has locked in his spot for the 2024 Games, and will represent the United States next July in Paris. These recent highlights show how he qualified for the Games: • Winning the gold medal in the men’s 80 kg at the Pan American Taekwondo Championships in Cancún, Mexico in 2021 • A gold medal again at the 2021 Junior Pan American Games in Cali, Colombia. • Another gold medal at the 2022 Pan American Taekwondo Championships held in Punta Cana, the Dominican Republic. • At the World Taekwondo Championships this past June, he became the first male in 14 years to medal, winning a silver in the men’s welterweight event held in Baku, Azerbaijan. • Last October, Nickolas won another

gold medal at the Pan-American Games in Santiago, Chile. Four bronze medals in World Taekwon• do Grand Prix events in Paris, Taiyuan, and Manchester in 2022 and 2023. “I have trained over 20 National Championships, but no one has ever had the drive that CJ possessed,” said Edward Givans, CJ’s father and former coach. “With his drive and motivation, there is nothing he can’t achieve. A gold medal at the Olympics has always been the goal.” Nickolas chronicles his journey, being born in Oakland in 2001 and raised in Brentwood, then starting taekwondo at age 3. He began competing at age 6, then he says, “got serious about it” around age 12. Coached by his father Givans until age 16, Nickolas made the switch to his current coach Gareth Brown, then moved out at age 17 to train on the United States National Team in Manchester, England, an event he calls his “biggest sacrifice” because he said he had to move away from his family, and noted that he now rarely sees them. After returning home, Nickolas moved permanently to Colorado Springs to join the USATKD Academy Team in 2019. For the past year, Nickolas has been based in North Carolina at the U.S. Performance Center. The team moved to North Carolina to be apart of a new program run by USPC at the University of Charlotte to take advantage of more services provided to them. “I don’t know what made me want to really start combat sports,” said Nickolas via text message. “I was so young, but for so long, there was something pulling me to the

NICKOLAS sport every time I tried to separate from it. It has taken me around the world, and I can see my growth as an athlete and as a man every day I step on the mat. The sport has genuinely helped me grow so much. I’ve also always had to deal with being the smallest person in the ring and therefore, having to work so much harder than everyone else to win.” When he was selected for the program, he was 5 feet, 10 inches tall and grew to 6 foot, 3 inches in one year. He was competing at 68 kg (149 pounds) and couldn’t continue to make that weight and hold it through COVID. While preparing for competition, Nickolas says while he has no restricted diet and his training schedule is set year-round, which is curated to make him feel “sharp and ready” on fight days. This then allows him to make weight, as it naturally goes down as he gets closer to competition. Furthermore, Nickolas draws inspira-

tion from Olympian Terrence Jennings and the late Kobe Bryant as his favorite athletes. Nickolas describes meeting Jennings as a “surreal” experience at age 11 due to Jennings being the first person he witnessed win a medal at the Olympic games, a bronze at the 2012 London Games. Meanwhile, Nickolas calls Bryant his favorite athlete of all time due to his competitive spirit in the Olympics making him more special. However, Nickolas credits another person as the one who inspires him the most. “My mom is my biggest inspiration for sure,” said Nickolas. “Watching her all these years sacrifice so much has really driven me to have the work ethic I do today. Also to my coaches--my dad, TJ, and Gareth -- really have all had an imprint on the man I’m becoming, and I couldn’t ask for better role models to follow.” Looking ahead, Nickolas says he hopes to soak in each moment as much as possible leading up to the Olympics, adding that the emotion of going to the Olympics has yet to fully set in. But he plans to channel that emotion into his goal of an Olympic gold medal win, which he says will happen if he remains “locked in” and takes time to enjoy the journey. “I am very proud of myself, and happy to see all the people around me so proud of me as well,” said Nickolas. “It is really a dream come true, and I want to remember it forever.” More information can be found on Nickolas’ Team USA bio at the following link at https://www.teamusa.com/profiles/cj-nickolas. and tournament results at http://www. worldtaekwondo.org/ranking/ranking.html.

3 Freedom varsity teams earn scholastic awards By Jeff Weisinger Staff Writer

Freedom High School saw three of its teams win NCS Scholastic Championship awards last week as the CIF-North Coast Section announced its scholastic champions for the fall 2023 season. Freedom had two of its fall teams take second place in their sport. The inaugural girls flag football team took second place in their sport with a 3.59 team GPA, just shy of Cardinal Newman’s 3.64 GPA, and the boys water polo team also took second place amongst Division I water polo teams with a 3.62 team GPA, falling .06 shy of Bay Valley Athletic League rival Heritage’s 3.68 team GPA. Freedom’s girls cross country team took third place amongst the section’s Division II cross country teams with a 3.90 GPA, just behind both Amador Valley (3.93) and Granada (3.95). “For a school to have one NCS Scholastic Team during the year is exciting,” Freedom Athletic Director Glenn Briggs said. “But three teams receiving banners during one season – now that’s truly a testament to the commitment of our student athletes, teachers, coaches, and staff to educational athletics. As an Athletic Director, I could not be prouder.”

These three teams -- girls flag football, boys water polo and girls cross country -- were honored by the North Coast Scholastic Championship for their respective team GPAs.

While only those three teams earned the prestigious NCS Scholastic Champion awards, all of Freedom’s fall varsity teams finished with a team GPA of at least 3.0 and were all eligible for the recognition, according to Briggs.

Heritage’s boys water polo team was the lone Patriots team to make the NCS Scholastic Champions list while Liberty had no fall teams make the list. To view a slideshow, visit www.thepress.net/multimedia/ slideshows

Hometown alum aims to revive Falcon pride a blessing.” Where Sims’ tenure had a sense of a relaxed practice with players wearing anything as long as they had their pads and helmet, Hartwig, and now Rodriguez, aimed to go back to that old-school like sense of uniformity and structure for the practice week – starting with players coming to the field fully dressed in same practice jerseys and pants. “I feel (last year’s team) didn’t necessarily know what that (structure) was,” Rodriguez said. “They couldn’t even grab that structure if they reached out for it.” “It was definitely concerning. It was definitely something where I looked at it and was like ‘we could do better’ with simple rules and structure in place. These kinds of things didn’t need to happen. It hurt my heart. Freedom doesn’t need to be at that place.” Freedom aims for a strong revival in 2024 with Rodriguez at the helm – the hometown kid leading the hometown team, giving back to his community. “It’s somewhere I’ve been my whole entire life,” he said. “I’m glad that I can be here and help the community in this way and turn around the perception. I think it’s really important to do that. “I feel honored to be in this position and be able to be someone in this community who can help the community.” To view a video and a slideshow, visit www.thepress.net/multimedia

Stephen Rodriguez walks into his mother’s old classroom near Freedom High School’s gym and takes a seat at an old and relatively small desk that not only was his when he was younger, but now is his once again as a teacher nearly twoand-a-half decades later. “Teaching in my mom’s old class of 25 years and taking that over to this year, it was already surreal,” he said of the ROP careers class. Freedom’s new head football coach has plenty in common with his players. For starters, he’s only 30 years old, cutting the age and generational gap that’s typically seen between player and coach at most programs. He’s experienced as a player, teacher, and coach having played wide receiver at the University of Redlands from 2012-16, then later on becoming the athletic director at O’Hara Park Middle School before coming back to Freedom where he was a part of last year’s coaching overhaul under Kevin Hartwig in the second half of the season. He’s also an Oakley native and Freedom alumnus who played for Freedom’s varsity football program for three seasons from 2009-11 after growing up on the sidelines as a ball boy. “I feel my age is an advantage,” Rodriguez said. “It has been in my teaching,

coaching experience, mentoring experience. I think I can identify with these kids a little bit more. I grew up in the social media age, grew up with phones to where some of those older coaches didn’t.” “I could strap on my cleats and run some routes, show them firsthand how to do things and I think that’s really important.” Rodriguez was an interim assistant coach under Hartwig after Freedom put Zach Sims on administrative leave from the program following theBell Game against Liberty in Week 6.

The coaching experience under Hartwig’s tutelage prepared Rodriguez for this upcoming opportunity. “Being out there last year, as a coach, and as a mentor, was an amazing experience to be able to give my pride and show them that there’s more to Freedom football than just playing the game,” he said. “(The coaching opportunity) was something that I’ve been wanting. It’s something that I talk with my family and my wife a lot about and we were ready for it. But hearing it, it was surreal. It’s just such

GAMES & PUZZLES

Here’s How It Works:

Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

Trustor(s): JOSEPH HAYES, A SINGLE PERSON Recorded: 11/6/2012 as Instrument No. 2012-0281430-00 of Official Records in the office of the Recorder of CONTRA COSTA County, California; Date of Sale: 1/30/2024 at 9:00 AM Place of Sale: At the Pleasant Hill Community Center, located at 320 Civic Drive, Pleasant Hill, CA 94523. In the Auction.com Room Amount of unpaid balance and other charges: $134,686.22 The purported property address is: 2960 FILBERT ST, ANTIOCH, CA 94509 Assessor’s Parcel No.: 051-362-008-8 NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call 800-280-2832 for information regarding the trustee’s sale or visit this internet website http://www. qualityloan.com, using the file number assigned to this foreclosure by the Trustee: CA23-966235-BF. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the internet website. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale. NOTICE TO TENANT: You may have a right to purchase this property after the trustee auction pursuant to Section 2924m of the California Civil Code. If you are an “eligible tenant buyer,” you can purchase the property if you match the last and highest bid placed at the trustee auction. If you are an “eligible bidder,” you may be able to purchase the property if you exceed the last and highest bid placed at the trustee auction. There are three steps to exercising this right of purchase. First, 48 hours after the date of the trustee sale, you can call 800-280-2832, or visit this internet website http://www.qualityloan.com, using the file number assigned to this foreclosure by the Trustee: CA-23-966235-BF to find the date on which the trustee’s sale was held, the amount of the last and highest bid, and the address of the trustee. Second, you must send a written notice of intent to place a bid so that the trustee receives it no more than 15 days after the trustee’s sale. Third, you must submit a bid so that the trustee receives it no more than 45 days after the trustee’s sale. If you think you may qualify as an “eligible tenant buyer” or “eligible bidder,” you should consider contacting an attorney or appropriate real estate professional immediately for advice regarding this potential right to purchase. NOTICE TO PROSPECTIVE OWNER-OCCUPANT: Any prospective owneroccupant as defined in Section 2924m of the California Civil Code who is the last and highest bidder at the trustee’s sale shall provide the required affidavit or declaration of eligibility to the auctioneer at the trustee’s sale or shall have it delivered to QUALITY LOAN SERVICE CORPORATION by 5 p.m. on the next business day following the trustee’s sale at the address set forth in the below signature

If no street address or other common designation is shown, directions to the location of the property may be obtained by sending a written request to the beneficiary within 10 days of the date of first publication of this Notice of Sale. If the sale is set aside for any reason, including if the Trustee is unable to convey title, the Purchaser at the sale shall be entitled only to a return of the monies paid to the Trustee. This shall be the Purchaser’s sole and exclusive remedy. The purchaser shall have no further recourse against the Trustor, the Trustee, the Beneficiary, the Beneficiary’s Agent, or the Beneficiary’s Attorney. A golden Christmas for Bristow Middle School at Chase Center

B

ristow Middle School’s choir got an amazing early Christmas gift on Dec. 23 as they were invited to perform the national anthem at the Chase Center prior to the Golden State Warriors game against the Portland Trail Blazers. The school’s choir has performed the national anthem for the Warriors every year since 2013, according to the school’s music director, Mark Morello. Later in the school year, the choir will also perform for the Sacramento Kings G-League team in Stockton and then for the Kings in Sacramento.

Shooting from page 1A while on break from delivering pizzas when a car pulled up next to Stewart’s car and someone shot him at close range before heading west on Rutherford, then turning north onto Vintage Parkway. Despite attempts by emergency

personnel to provide life-saving medical aid, Stewart died at the scene 10 minutes after officers arrived, police said in a press release. “I was at the scene of the aftermath of this horrendous crime,” Oakley police Chief Paul Beard said in a statement. “I spoke to a mother who unknowingly

watched her son get shot in front of his own home. There is absolutely zero excuse for what happened.” “We are still in the early stages of the investigation and we still do not know everything we need to know. The detectives of the Oakley Police Department will be working hard on this case.”

The Oakley Police Department are asking anyone with any information or anyone with a surveillance system that was running from 4 p.m to 5:05 p.m. to contact the Oakley police dispatch at 925-625-8060 or contact Detective Dombrouski at 925-325-6670 or at dombrouski@ci.oakley.ca.us.

Fire from page 1A ConFire evaluated several people close to the scene for any other unknown injuries. The mobile home itself was seriously burned in the front, and the damage was extensive, officials said. With the holidays in full swing and the New Year’s weekend just days away, Daniel added that people should try to be as safe as possible when celebrating at home. “Just make sure that you’re keeping an eye on candles’ extension cords,” he said. “If you’re not going to be in the room where a candle is lit or where something is plugged in, definitely unplug it or put that candle out if possible. Fire officials are investigating the cause of the fire. “This time of year, there’s obviously a lot of people who like to use candles, and many other electronics,” Daniel said. “Just be safe when using it.
