Local law enforcement is offering advice on how to celebrate and travel safely through the holiday season – the most common being to not drink and drive. “We know this is a time of year when friends and family like to get together,” Oakley police chief Paul Beard said. “Sometimes these gatherings involve drinking so we strongly urge the usage of responsible designated drivers. In the event a designated driver is not available please use rideshare services to get yourself safely home without endangering others.” Along the topic of safe driving, Beard also added that travelers should expect inclement weather throughout this time of year. “Dress appropriately, leave earlier than you normally would so you are not rushed on the road and be very aware of changing road conditions,” Beard said. “If you are not a driver who is comfortable driving in the dark or the rain it is ok to skip your event or utilize a rideshare service.” To help drivers in East County and throughout the Bay Area reach their holiday destinations safely, the CHP will implement maximum enforcement periods through the Christmas and New Year’s holidays. “The CHP is dedicated to keeping California’s roadways

Champions on Ice returns to Brentwood on Ice Jan. 6 event for special-needs skaters in its sixth year By Jake Menez Staff Writer

Several years ago, Brentwood resident Ranae Callaway took her special-needs son to go ice skating. It wasn’t a great experience. “Some don’t understand my son’s behaviors or limitations, and it can be tense,” she said of it. “Looks can be given or words can be said.” That experience inspired Callaway to come up with Champions on Ice – an annual event celebrating those with special needs and giving them an opportunity to experience a sense of acceptance. Now in its sixth year, Champions on Ice returns to the Brentwood on Ice rink on Second Street on Jan. 6. “Champions on Ice allows kids and adults like my son to be themself,” Callaway said. “If my son wears a blanket to keep warm (he has sensory issues and won’t wear a jacket), pushes past a group of people or screams really loud, no one notices. It’s just normal. It gives me a level of comfort and acceptance that, at times, I don’t feel. Champions on Ice is a safe place for my son and myself to experience a social activity together.” The all-ages event is free, according to Callaway. Tom Gregory, the owner of Brentwood on Ice, donates the rink, skates and designated skating buddies from 10 a.m. until noon, closing it to the public to accommodate the attendees. About 40 skaters have signed up as of press time, according to Callaway, but Champions on Ice typically sees close to 100 skaters each year. The only limit to

Champions on Ice, an annual event giving those with special needs the opportunity to enjoy some winter fun, returns to Brentwood on Ice on Jan. 6. the number of skaters is the rink capacity, Gregory said. “Some attendees don’t skate and attendees in wheelchairs can get pushed on the ice in their wheelchairs,” Callaway said. “Attendees come to socialize with other families, share resources and it gives our loved ones the opportunity to skate or to just experience an ice rink in a supportive environment.” Those interested in attending the event should RSVP

Art: a way to heal in a hectic world In the new age of technology and the up-and-coming world of artificial intelligence, sometimes we can forget what beautiful things we can make with our own two hands. Art may be a key to the healing journey for many people who struggle with mental health problems for whom life can be stressful and hard. When I experience difficult times in my life I turn to art to cope. In 2021, I didn’t have many friends, and I had a difficult time naviouth gating my way riter through social circles . Before discovering the artist in myself, I would heavily rely on my phone as a distraction from my emotions as I scrolled through images and videos looking for solace. In the long run, I realized that it didn’t satisfy me in the way I wanted, and I needed to do something good for myself. In November of that year, I found crocheting. According to the American Art Therapy Association, art therapy can be an individual treatment or used with more than one person in a group together. Science suggests that it can reshape our brain and alter our thoughts in a more positive, balanced way. Art therapy can be beneficial to those who are overcoming

addiction, dealing with anxiety or depression, or those who deal with a high level of stress. The idea of learning something new scared me, and it was a bit challenging to acquire the skill. But once I got it down, I couldn’t stop doing it. I found myself crocheting for hours on end and not even realizing it because I enjoyed it so much and it took my mind off of conflict and channeled it into positivity. It didn’t hurt that I had a great project in the end. Soon after my love for crocheting began, I discovered collaging.

BRENTWOOD CLINIC

1200 Central Blvd. Suite D Brentwood, CA 94513

GOLDEN STATE DERMATOLOGY

I did a collaging project at school and absolutely loved it, so I continued doing it at home. I started collaging with magazines and pictures but realized that you could use a variety of objects. Feathers, dried flowers, stickers and any item your heart desires. The possibilities of what you can use are endless, and it makes for a unique product every time. When bringing up art to others, I’ve gotten mixed reactions. One idea that stops people from making their own art is “I’m not creative, I can’t do art!” This belief is just false. While some are born with the artistic lens, everyone has one. They just have to uncover it in themselves. Over the summer, I was collaging one day and I wanted my cousin to join. She originally had the mindset that she couldn’t do it because she wasn’t creative, but I urged her to just try it out and see what she can do. We put some music on and ended up collaging past midnight. We had great

conversation throughout, and she ended up with a beautiful project that was better than she could have imagined. Ever since this one experience, she had more belief in herself artistically and would join me in future projects. Lynn Azevedo, an art teacher at La Paloma High School, is familiar with using art to cope with her life struggles. Hands-on activities help keep her brain stimulated and distracted from her pain or current stressful situation. It also gives her a positive project to focus on apart from negative emotions. “Art can be functional but it’s okay for art to just be made to be admired,” she says. Being a teacher for nearly 30 years, she has been told numerous times that her art class is the reason some come to school. She is fond of the quote by Pablo Picasso: “Every child is an artist; the problem is staying an artist when you grow up.” She stresses how important it is to encourage the artist not only in children but as they grow into teens and adults as well. Art has significantly helped me and those around me deal with difficulty in our lives. It’s times when strong emotions take over when you create beautiful and meaningful art. We read fiction to escape the reality of life; we use art to depict a story in the way we want to see it. I believe that art can have a positive impact on all who participate in it and can help people grow as individuals. The only thing stopping you from making masterpieces is your fear and insecurity of the unknown. Everyone is capable of art, and when you realize that you will also realize you are capable of anything! Art is a beautiful tool that can help everyone on their journey to peace and happiness. Concord man arrested after Antioch man fatally shot by railroad tracks

A 40-year-old Concord man was arrested after a 29-year-old Antioch man was fatally shot by the railroad tracks in the 700 block of West 1st Street on Dec. 16 at about 4:30 p.m. Antioch police arrived and found the 29-year-old who had been shot. Paramedics arrived a short time later and pronounced the male dead. Witnesses provided information to officers of the suspect and the suspect vehicle. A short time later, Brentwood Police located the suspect vehicle in the 1200 block of Dainty Avenue. With the assistance of the Brentwood police patrol officers and Brentwood police SWAT team, the 40-year-old male suspect was taken into custody without incident. Police did not release the men’s names. Antioch Police detectives are investigating the incident, and won’t release the dead man’s name until the family has been notified. Anyone with information is asked to call Detective Duffy at 925-779-6884 or the Antioch Police Department non-emergency line at 925-778-2441.

County surveys residents about warning system

Contra Costa Health seeks input from county residents about whether they use the community warning system, how well it works, and if more notification options would improve it. It is an all-hazards community notification system that alerts residents about emergencies affecting public health or safety, including those from refineries and large chemical manufacturing facilities in Contra

Costa County. CCH’s survey, available on the warning system page at cchealth.org, seeks information about community familiarity with the tool, whether polled residents subscribe, and opinions about the service. The system sends free phone calls, texts and emails to anyone who signs up at cwsalerts.com. Users have subscription options, including whether to receive alerts only from certain areas of the county, or only about certain facilities. The survey, conducted at the direction of the Industrial Safety Ordinance / Community Warning System Ad Hoc Committee of the Contra Costa Board of Supervisors, also asks if residents would like notifications about nearby industrial incidents that are not deemed emergencies. The warning system was designed for emergency use. So when a facility reports an unexpected release – such as flaring, odors, smoke, noises, or fires – the warning system sends an alert to its subscribers only if the incident is likely to affect health in the surrounding community in the estimation of the facility, or the emergency responders from CCH or the fire department who are investigating. For details about the warning system and its response levels, visit the CWS page at cchealth.org. The county’s Hazardous Materials Incident Notification Policy requires specified facilities, including all the county’s refineries, to immediately report to the warning system whenever there is a release or threatened release of hazardous material, as well as flaring. Most of these are “Level 1” incidents – received and investigated by CCH’s Hazardous Materials Response Team, but not subject to a community alert. The warning system has received 227 reported Level 1 alerts in 2023 from industrial facilities.

of the

The survey asks whether warning system subscribers should have the option to directly receive additional alerts via phone, text or email as they happen, even for incidents that may not threaten the community. The survey is planned to continue through Jan. 12, 2024.

Effort to improve safety for cyclists, motorists in Mt. Diablo State Park raises $755,090

The Mount Diablo Bike Turnout campaign raised $755,090, exceeding its goal of $750,000, according to the California State Parks Foundation. Cyclists from the parks foundation and the Mount Diablo Cyclists group have partnered to build Phase Two of bike safety turnouts at Mount Diablo State Park. For many years, cycling at Mount Diablo State Park has been a popular — but dangerous — activity. From 2010 to 2014, there were an average of 23 car and bike collisions per year. According to California State Park officials, this also frequently resulted in road rage showdowns between drivers and riders. Bike turnouts allow bicyclists, who move at slower speeds as they pedal uphill, to pull out of the main traffic lane into their own lane so that vehicles can pass safely. After the first turnouts were created, collisions

dropped to three accidents in two years, and road rage significantly diminished. With the completion of 30 bike turnouts in 2022, there are now 45 total at Mount Diablo State Park. This project was inspired by the memory of Joe Shami, an advocate for increasing safety for bicyclists and cars at Mount Diablo State Park. Known by locals as “The Legend of Mount Diablo,” Shami’s passion for Mount Diablo State Park and cycling was exemplified by over a decade of weekly trips up the mountain well into his 80s. “Tragically, Joe was struck and killed by a vehicle while riding his bicycle in Lafayette,” said Randy Widera, Director of Programs of the California State Parks Foundation. “Although he is not with us today, Joe left a special gift in his will of $123,415.61 to California State Parks Foundation to fund additional bike turnouts on Mount Diablo.” In a show of dedication to this work, California State Parks allocated the same amount as Shami’s gift with an additional $123,415.61 from the department’s annual roads allocation funding. “We absolutely enjoyed all our time and effort meeting and speaking with the thousands of motorists and cyclists,” Kalin said. “The vast majority of folks understood the critical importance that bike turnouts could make, how they help prevent collisions and save lives.”

CHP to add more DUI patrols over holiday weekends

by Vera Martinez, Certified Travel Agent

Merry Christmas!

than 5,500 DUI enforcement operations throughout the state, resulting in more than 6,300 DUI arrests. Impaired driving also puts Caltrans workers, firefighters, emergency medical personnel and tow truck operators at risk as they work on the side of the state’s roads. “As you celebrate and enjoy the holidays and festivities, I urge everyone to celebrate safely and never drive under the influence. And, as you travel during the holidays, remember to Be Work Zone Alert and protect those working on California’s roadways,” said Caltrans Director Tony Tavares. The CHP, traffic safety office and Caltrans remind drivers that driving under the influence of any substance that affects your ability to drive safely is illegal. If you plan on drinking or consuming drugs that may impair that ability, plan on a designated sober driver, staying the night with family or friends, or using public transportation. The CHP says, remember to always choose a sober way to go.

This Christmas, let the spirit of adventure guide you through the captivating landscapes of love and togetherness. As you unwrap the gift of togetherness, imagine it as a passport to precious memories and shared family stories. Let the sleigh bells serenade you with melodies of laughter, and may the twinkling lights guide you to moments of warmth and connection. Picture each gathering as a delightful stop on your holiday itinerary, each hug and smile a unique landmark in the landscape of celebration. Let the diversity of traditions be our cultural landmarks, enriching the tapestry of our shared experiences.

With the holidays approaching, the CHP is intensifying enforcement efforts to quickly remove impaired drivers from our roads,” CHP Commissioner Sean Duryee said in a press release “This holiday season, we are asking the motoring public to commit to making responsible decisions behind the wheel and help ensure that everyone arrives home safely.” The Office of Traffic Safety provides grants for more than 200 law enforcement agencies throughout the state that will join the CHP and deploy additional officers over the holidays to stop suspected impaired drivers. Opinion EDITORIALS, LETTERS & COMMENTARY

‘Twas the night before Christmas ‘Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse; The stockings were hung by the chimney with care, In hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be there; The children were nestled all snug in their beds; While visions of sugar-plums danced in their heads; And mamma in her ‘kerchief, and I in my cap, Had just settled our brains for a long winter’s nap, When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter, I sprang from my bed to see what was the matter. Away to the window I flew like a flash, Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash. The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow, Gave a lustre of midday to objects below, When what to my wondering eyes did appear, But a miniature sleigh and eight tiny rein-deer, With a little old driver so lively and quick, I knew in a moment he must be St. Nick. More rapid than eagles his coursers they came, And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name: “Now, Dasher! now, Dancer! now Prancer and Vixen! On, Comet! on, Cupid! on, Donner and Blitzen! To the top of the porch! to the top of the wall! Now dash away! dash away! dash away all!” As leaves that before the wild hurricane fly, When they meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky; So up to the housetop the coursers they flew With the sleigh full of toys, and St. Nicholas too— And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the roof The prancing and pawing of each little hoof. As I drew in my head, and was turning around, Down the chimney St. Nicholas came with a bound. He was dressed all in fur, from his head to his foot, And his clothes were all tarnished with ashes and soot; A bundle of toys he had flung on his back, And he looked like a pedler just opening his pack. His eyes—how they twinkled! his dimples, how merry! His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry! His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow, And the beard on his chin was as white as the snow; The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth, And the smoke, it encircled his head like a wreath; He had a broad face and a little round belly That shook when he laughed, like a bowl full of jelly. He was chubby and plump, a right jolly old elf, And I laughed when I saw him, in spite of myself; A wink of his eye and a twist of his head Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread; He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work, And filled all the stockings; then turned with a jerk, And laying his finger aside of his nose, And giving a nod, up the chimney he rose; He sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle, And away they all flew like the down of a thistle. But I heard him exclaim, ere he drove out of sight— “Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good night!” By Clement Clarke Moore

Editor: On behalf of the Board of the Brentwood Regional Community Chest, we would like to thank the generous volunteers and donors who made our 2023 Christmas food and toy distribution tremendously successful. We are honored to carry on the community spirit started by Rose Pierce more than 50 years ago. We again had a great balance of volunteers who have been with us year after year as well as many who joined us for the first time. More than 425 families were presented with a large box of food, a turkey with all the ingredients for a Christmas dinner, and toys for their children. We were once again overwhelmed by the support shown for residents by residents. Join us for either day and you can see how special the people of Brentwood are. This event would not be possible without all of the local schools and businesses that support our collection efforts each November and December. We are so appreciative of the employees

Heritage girls basketball eager, ready for road trip and confidence booster SoCal Holiday Prep Classic in San Diego next week By Jeff Weisinger Staff Writer

Heritage High’s girls basketball team will have two firsts of two different kinds when they take on Irvine’s Woodbridge High School next Wednesday. First, the trip to San Diego marks the first road trip for the program. Second, it’ll mark their first game played in 20 days. In comparison, Heritage’s longest break last year was 11 days, from Dec. 3-14 and they had a 17-day break between games in 2016. The Patriots are eager and ready to go – both on the road and onto the court. “(The break) has been great,” Patriots head coach Mark Hurtado said. “We got a couple girls healthy, worked on a lot of stuff that we saw through those early games, and it gave us time to regroup after such a tougher schedule.” “We also had finals this week, and last year we wanted to give the girls a little extra time to study.” Record-wise, Heritage’s 3-3 start is the worst start to a season for the program since they went 2-4 in the first six games of the 2015-16 campaign – this considering that Heritage opened last year at 5-1, went 6-0 in 2021-22, and 4-2 in 2019-20. The tougher non-league schedule played a role in that. Bishop O’Dowd (51), Carondelet (8-0), and Acalanes (8-1) were all State tournament teams like the Patriots last year, while Northgate (74) and Miramonte (3-6) were both NCS

Heritage’s Kendall McClure looks to work through defenders during the Patriots’ practice Monday night. Division II playoff teams, and American (3-5) was a NCS Division I playoff team. “We just happened to play the top three teams in Northern California,” Hurtado said. “We ended the last game against Acalanes on a good note; we played them tough. The other two games weren’t as close, but we won the game we were supposed to win and probably got a chance to upset maybe one of the other games. But I think it happened how it was supposed to happen.” Against Acalanes, Heritage almost clawed back from a 17-point deficit to rally to within 6 points earlier this month, but fell just short 55-47 at home. They used that momentum to defeat American in Fremont by 20 points two days later entering their current break.

“It was good to get on the winning side of things before we had this break,” Hurtado said. Heritage’s upcoming trip to San Diego could spark the fuse that Heritage wants to explode out of the gate when they open the 2024 portion of the campaign against Del Oro (Jan. 2, 7 p.m.) at home before hosting Antioch in the Bay Valley Athletic League opener on Jan. 9. “Our coaches and myself are just looking to put a little fire under us so we can go into league with that confidence boost, knowing we’ve played really, really good teams,” senior guard Kendall McClure said. “Transitioning to league, we’ll have that confidence of ‘We’ve played great competition, it’ll be the same, if not a little different in league.’ ”

Through the last several years, Heritage has shown that league play hasn’t been much of a problem for them. Since 2015, the Patriots are a combined 73-2 in league play, including the delayed 202021 COVID-19 season and the shortened 2021-22 season. Their two losses in that stretch came against Freedom on Jan. 22, 2022 and against Liberty on Feb. 5, 2016. Heritage is riding a 15-game win streak against BVAL opponents since that loss to Freedom in 2022. The Patriots will take on Woodbridge (Irvine) on Dec. 27, Mater Dei Catholic (Chula Vista) on Dec. 28, and Carlsba on Dec. 29. Although the games on the court matter just as much, it’s the growth and chemistry of the team off of it that the team is looking forward to even more. For McClure and freshman guard Ze’Ni Patterson, the trip to Southern California will be their first time traveling this far for a tournament in their young careers, and both are looking forward to that team growth on the upcoming road trip. “I’m very excited to travel with my team,” Patterson said. “I feel like we just gotta go out there and play with energy. Traveling and playing new faces will be good for us.” “Sometimes it’s hard to build those relationships super fast. They don’t come easy,” McClure added. “So going out and traveling that far, it requires a level of trust and deeper connection and I think we’re gonna build that in San Diego. I’m really excited to play together and get to know each other more outside of basketball, because we’re going to spend a lot of time together.” To view a video and a slideshow, visit www.thepress.net/multimedia

Freedom High alum named new head football coach By Jeff Weisinger Staff Writer

Freedom High School’s football team will have a familiar face on the sidelines in the 2024 season. Falcons alumnus Stephen Rodriguez was named the new head coach of the program on Tuesday. He takes over for Kevin Hartwig and Scott Sbranti, who coached the team through the last four games of the season after Zach Sims was fired following Liberty’s Week 6 loss to Liberty in the Bell Game in Oakley. Rodriguez was an assistant coach under Hartwig during the final four games of the season.

Sims was put on administrative leave from the football program after the loss to Liberty, although Freedom principal

Steve Amaro told The Press back in early October that “there were some things that came up and we thought (relieving

him from coaching) would be better for the students.” Rodriguez takes over for a team that struggled in 2023. The Falcons’ 1-9 record was their worst in a full season since they went 1-9 in 2009. The Falcons’ offense struggled the most in league play, getting shut out in the team’s first four BVAL games before scoring 41 points in a 49-41 loss against Deer Valley in the season finale. Rodriguez was a three-sport athlete at Freedom during his time there from 2009-12. He spent three years with the varsity football team, but also played a pair of seasons playing baseball and basketball.

Heritage girls happy with first win Chemistry improves as team heads into Christmas break

coach’s decision to put her up top, and she really changed the game.” Staples earned the assist on the pass to Esquivias on Heritage’s second goal. Livermore found lanes to try to create scoring chances late in the first half. However, Heritage’s backline stepped up to the challenge. Toal’s first big save came on a rocket of a shot from Livermore’s Rachel Fuller towards Toal’s far post at her right, but Toal was able to get up and catch the shot on goal. Livermore’s Kyla McEneany tried to spark a Cowboys rally early in the second half, but her shot in the 46th minute went wide of goal. It was one of just a few chances Livermore was able to create in the second half. This first victory snapped a winless streak through the first five matches of the season. Saturday’s 1-1 draw at Berkeley was a step in the right direction as they broke a three-match losing skid beforehand. Heritage returns to action at home on Jan. 9 against Antioch in the Bay Valley Athletic League opener, the first of a twogame homestand. They’ll host Deer Valley on Jan. 12 before going on a five-match road trip in the league. “It just feels great to end that with a win and know that we’re going into league with that solid base of who our team is,” Toal said. Christmas came a little bit early for the Heritage girls soccer team Tuesday night, as did a birthday gift for one of the girls. A pair of back-to-back first-half goals by Jasmine Staples and Chantal Esquivias sparked Heritage’s 2-0 home win over Livermore, the Patriots’ first of the season and just in time with the team heading into the Christmas break. “I’m super proud of the girls,” head coach Sienna Zabroski said. “We executed our game plan.” “We have such skilled players, and now it’s finally coming together. “Our chemistry on and off the field is significantly better from the start of the season. This group is the most passionate. They’re passionate about the sport they want to learn. They’re super coachable.” On defense, senior goalkeeper Cate Toal earned her first clean sheet of the season, adding that on top of the huge win -all on her 18th birthday. “I was super proud of her,” Zabroski said. “It’s her birthday, so it’s even sweeter and even better to get that.”

Heritage’s Jasmine Staples (5) fires the ball past Livermore goalkeeper Madelyn Funk to score the Patriots’ opening goal of the night in their 2-0 win over the Cowboys in Brentwood. “It’s so cool,” Toal said. “I was so excited going in, I just gave it my all out there.” Heritage played aggressively on the attack throughout the first half, creating several scoring opportunities in the opening minutes. Staples nearly scored in the fifth minute, getting an open shot at Livermore’s left post, but her shot went just wide of goal.

Staples eventually opened the scoring for the Patriots in the 18th minute, breaking past both of Livermore’s centerbacks, then beat Cowboys goalkeeper Madelyn Funk at the top of the box to the back of the net for the first goal. The Patriots struck again two minutes later on the goal by Esquivias. “(Jasmine’s) been a staple on our team,” Zabroski said. “Tonight we had two girls out that are starters and we made a

Former Liberty football player Sione Vaki may see his professional football dreams come true next year. The former Utah Ute and ex-Lion declared for next year’s NFL draft in a social media post on Dec. 8. “As I look to the future, I have made the decision to declare for the 2024 NFL Draft,” he said in the post. “This decision does not come lightly, but I believe it is the best path for me to pursue my dreams of playing professional football.” Vaki, a three-star recruit rated by 247Sports and Rivals, spent two years on the varsity football team at Liberty in the 2017 and State championship 2018 seasons after transferring from Antioch following his 2016 sophomore season. He amassed 2,604 yards of total offense with 39 total touchdowns in 27 career games. He broke out in the passing game in his 2018 senior season, racking up 1,394 receiving yards with 20 receiving touchdowns, helping him

Christ of Latter-day Saints, he appeared in 14 games with Utah in 2022, seeing time on both defense and special teams, totalling 41 tackles with a forced fumble and three pass breakups. He built on that in his 2023 senior season in 2023, playing primarily at safety while getting some time on offense in seven games. In his primary role on defense, he racked up 50 tackles, 37 solo tackles, with two sacks and an interception. On offense, he ran 42 times for 317 yards with two scores and caught 11 passes for 203 yards with three scores. He was named Pac-12 All Conference, 2023 All-American, and was a finalist for both the Polynesian College Football Player of the Year (Maryland’s Taulia Tagovailoa) and the Paul Hornung Award (Colorado’s Travis Hunter) for the most versatile, high-level performer in major college football. He is not projected to go within the top 100 picks, according to Sports Illustrated’s most recent mock draft.

Second, you must send a written notice of intent to place a bid so that the trustee receives it no more than 15 days after the trustee’s sale. Third, you must submit a bid so that the trustee receives it no more than 45 days after the trustee’s sale. If you think you may qualify as an “eligible tenant buyer” or “eligible bidder,” you should consider contacting an attorney or appropriate real estate professional immediately for advice regarding this potential right to purchase. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call 800280-2832 for information regarding the trustee’s sale or visit this internet website http://www.qualityloan.com, using the file number assigned to this foreclosure by the Trustee: CA-22-937678-AB. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the internet website. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale. NOTICE TO TENANT: You may have a right to purchase this property after the trustee auction pursuant to Section 2924m of the California Civil Code. If you are an “eligible tenant buyer,” you can purchase the property if you match the last and highest bid placed at the trustee auction. If you are an “eligible bidder,” you may be able to purchase the property if you exceed the last and highest bid placed at the trustee auction. There are three steps to exercising this right of purchase. First, 48 hours after the date of the trustee sale, you can call 800-280-2832, or visit this internet website http://www.qualityloan. com, using the file number assigned to this foreclosure by the Trustee: CA-22-937678AB to find the date on which the trustee’s sale was held, the amount of the last and highest bid, and the address of the trustee. NOTICE TO PROSPECTIVE OWNER-OCCUPANT: Any prospective owner-occupant as defined in Section 2924m of the California Civil Code who is the last and highest bidder at the trustee’s sale shall provide the required affidavit or declaration of eligibility to the auctioneer at the trustee’s sale or shall have it delivered to QUALITY LOAN SERVICE CORPORATION by 5 p.m. on the

next business day following the trustee’s sale at the address set forth in the below signature block. The undersigned Trustee disclaims any liability for any incorrectness of the property address or other common designation, if any, shown herein. If no street address or other common designation is shown, directions to the location of the property may be obtained by sending a written request to the beneficiary within 10 days of the date of first publication of this Notice of Sale. If the sale is set aside for any reason, including if the Trustee is unable to convey title, the Purchaser at the sale shall be entitled only to a return of the monies paid to the Trustee. This shall be the Purchaser’s sole and exclusive remedy. The purchaser shall have no further recourse against the Trustor, the Trustee, the Beneficiary, the Beneficiary’s Agent, or the Beneficiary’s Attorney. If you have previously been discharged through bankruptcy, you may have been released of personal liability for this loan in which case this letter is intended to exercise the note holders right’s against the real property only. shall be the return of monies paid to the Trustee, and the successful bidder shall have no further recourse. NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the internet website. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale. First, 48 hours after the date of the trustee sale, you can call (916) 939-0772, or visit this internet website www.nationwideposting.com, using the file number assigned to this case 132205-5 to find the date on which the trustee’s sale was held, the amount of the last and highest bid, and the address of the trustee. Second, you must send a written notice of intent to place a bid so that the trustee receives it no more than 15 days after the trustee’s sale. Third, you must submit a bid, by remitting the funds and affidavit described in Section 2924m(c) of the Civil Code, so that the trustee receives it no more than 45 days after the trustee’s sale. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on this property. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call (866)-960-8299 or visit this Internet Web site https://www.altisource.com/loginpage.aspx using the file number assigned to this case 2023-01257-CA. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Web site. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale. NOTICE OF TRUSTEE’S SALE NOTICE TO TENANT: You may have a right to purchase this property after the trustee auction, if conducted after January 1, 2021, pursuant to Section 2924m of the California Civil Code. First, 48 hours after the date of the trustee sale, you can call (866)960-8299, or visit this internet website https://www.altisource.com/loginpage. aspx, using the file number assigned to this case 2023-01257-CA to find the date on which the trustee’s sale was held, the amount of the last and highest bid, and the address of the trustee. If you think you may qualify as an “eligible tenant buyer” or “eligible bidder,” you should consider contacting an attorney or appropriate real estate professional immediately for advice regarding this potential right to purchase. Delta Christian Community Food Pantry delivers 8,000 pounds of food, toys, socks The Delta Christian Community Food Pantry (DCCFP) delivered more than 8,000 pounds of food, toys, and socks to people in three locations on Tuesday, Dec. 19. This was the pantry’s last food distribution before Christmas. This was one of several holiday programs, including: Advent boxes: The Byron Delta Lions Club assembled and donated 200 food boxes. That contained non-perishable and holiday appropriate items for our neighbors. Warm new socks: We gave away over 500 pairs of new socks. Several neighbors commented on how much they appreciated the items. Toy drive: Neighbors signed up at the beginning of December to receive gifts for their children. The gift tags were located on the Delta Community Presby-

terian Church’s Christmas Giving Tree. All tags were taken by church members and DCCFP.

The Delta Christian Community Food Pantry was formed under the auspices of Saint Anne Catholic, Delta Com-

munity Presbyterian and Byron United Methodist churches. It is organized under the Saint Vincent de Paul society. The pantry has about 750 registered families. Every Tuesday, the pantry distributes 6,000 pounds of food to over 700 neighbors from three locations: St. Anne’s Catholic Church, Byron, at 9 a.m.; New Calvary Church; Knightsen at 10 a.m. and New Covenant Church on Bethel Island at 11 a.m.. Their food comes from several sources, the largest being from “The Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP). Under TEFAP, the pantry receives a monthly delivery of menus to support 170 portions a week. In addition to TEFAP, it collects bakery, deli and frozen items from the Discovery Bay Safeway and the Oakley Grocery Outlet under a program called, “Feeding America.”

With the holidays approaching, the CHP is intensifying enforcement efforts to quickly remove impaired drivers from our roads,” CHP Commissioner Sean Duryee said. “This holiday season, we are asking the motoring public to commit to making responsible decisions behind the wheel and help ensure that everyone arrives home safely.” The Office of Traffic Safety provides grants for more than 200 law enforcement agencies throughout the state that will join the CHP and deploy additional officers over the holidays to stop suspected impaired drivers. From October 2022 to September 2023, the traffic safety office funded more than 5,500 DUI enforcement operations throughout the state, resulting in more than 6,300 DUI arrests. Impaired driving also puts Caltrans workers, firefighters, emergency medical personnel and tow truck operators at risk as they work on the side of the state’s roads. “As you celebrate and enjoy the holidays and festivities, I urge everyone to celebrate safely and never drive under the influence. established at the Kaiser Shipyard in Richmond, affectionately known as “Shipyard Tech”. This eventually led to the construction of Contra Costa College in San Pablo. At the time, Contra Costa County’s population was 249,322 and growing quickly, in 1950 a second campus was established in Martinez, which eventually was relocated and became Diablo Valley College in Pleasant Hill. As the county continued to expand eastward and southward, a third campus was built at the former Camp Stoneman in Pittsburg that eventually became Los Medanos College. Smaller academic centers were established in Brentwood in 2001, and in San Ramon in 2006, providing a higher education opportunity to anyone in the county within a 15-minute drive. In November 1971, the district was renamed the Contra Costa Community College District. Today, it serves about 46,000 unduplicated students annually (2022-23). The diversity of the current students served is reflective of the changing demographics of the county, where a majority of the students are of color. The district employs almost 3,600 full- and part-time employees, and is one of the largest employers in the county.

B

At a special election held on Dec. 14, 1948, Contra Costa County voters approved the formation of a junior college district by a vote of 6,062 to 5,288. Then, the Board of Supervisors officially declared the formation of the Contra Costa County Junior College District at their Dec. 27, 1948, meeting. Thus began the 75-year history of the institution’s mission to serve high-quality and affordable higher education in its community. Links to activities and programs that celebrate the 75th anniversary of both Contra Costa College and Diablo Valley College will also be available at www.4cd.edu. along with events and activities associated with the 50th anniversary celebration of Los Medanos College. The public is also invited to join these free college activities and programs. Thanks to the GI Bill and the influx of military and war workers who moved to California during World War II, the expansion of junior colleges in the state offered the affordable higher education solution needed to successfully return to civilian life. The district was one of 14 formed between 1946 and 1950, and became the first countywide community college district in the state. The first district was set up at Camp Stoneman in Pittsburg in 1949. Later that year, the first campus was
