Freedom students say they feel safe City They call social media ‘unreliable’

Freedom HIgh School parents lined up outside of the high school Monday morning to pick up their kids after fear of their safety following an illegitimate shooting threat on campus.

By Jeff Weisinger Staff Writer

For Freedom High School juniors Ysabel Vongon and Victoria DeLeon, Tuesday at Freedom was just about as normal as any other day. A little over 24 hours earlier, their school was in a panic after a false shooting threat that went viral from a Facebook post by a Freedom parent resulted in more than 1,000 of their classmates leaving campus and getting picked up by parents who were even more concerned. “It felt like an ordinary day, just like any day from last week,” DeLeon said. “(Tuesday) was pretty ordinary,” Vongon added. “Just

still a little bit of tension though. Still people with rumors going around.” Vongon added that the rumors were other students making assumptions about who made the statements (Monday). According to Freedom principal Steve Amaro, atten-

dance at Freedom on Tuesday was at 95 percent, slightly above the 93 percent average the school normally has. “We’re right at average,” Amaro told The Press. “The kids were back, they were ready to go, and they were engaged. I think there’s still some concern within the community, but they

also realize they’re on a safe campus.” Vongon and DeLeon stayed on campus through the day while the majority of the student body left out of fear for their own safety. DeLeon said that she took caution with see Freedom page18

How to stay safe on Halloween night Halloween is right around the corner. Festivities celebrating spooks and scares in Brentwood and surrounding towns start this weekend. So here are some tips from county officials and National Neighborhood Safety Watch, so children and adults can enjoy the fun-filled evening and be safe. “If you plan to trick-or-treat this Sunday, make sure to wear fire resistant costumes & have flashlights to see in the dark,” Con Fire posted on social media. “If you’re driving, watch for children in the streets and enter/exit your driveway slowly.” Other tips from the department include choosing fire-resistant costumes, keeping decorations away from open flames, using battery operated candles in jack-o-lanterns and keeping exits clear of decorations so that nothing blocks escape routes.

to get interns By Jake Menez Staff Writer

Brentwood students will soon have the opportunity to earn money and job experience as an intern with the city. The City Council voted 5-0 at their Oct. 24 meeting to pave the way for the city’s internship program. A variety of opportunities will be available for high school students, college students and those with Bachelor’s degrees depending on the role, according to the internship guidelines created by the city. Compensation for interns will range from $15.50 per hour to $25 per hour depending on the position and level of experience required. Entry-level interns would start at $15.50 per hour, which is the minimum wage in California, according to city staff. The pilot program – which will target high school students for entry-level internships – will last six months, according to Sosa. Students will begin in January and end in June and will be expected to present their experiences to the City Council at the end of the program. “It’s always been a pleasure to support and partner with people that are helping our children and training our future,” Mayor Joel Bryant said after the vote. The internship program was originally developed in February of 2020, Director of Human Resources Sukari Bessee Council page 18

Ralston welcomed as Los Medanos College’s first permanent female president She has been interim president since January By Juan Cebreiros Correspondent

For the first time in Los Medanos College history, the permanent president is a female, Pamela Ralston, Ph.D. “I couldn’t be more happy, tonight was really special,” Ralston said following her appointment celebration at the Pittsburg Los Medanos Campus. She had been interim president since January. Several members of LMC leadership, along with Contra Costa Community College District leadership, attended the event to honor Ralston as she transitions from interim to permanent president. However, Ralston didn’t anticipate becoming the full-time president of LMC. When she stepped in as interim president, she viewed it as her stepping in to fill the void left by former president Bob Kratochvil last December. Now as permanent president, she mentioned how this appointment brings a slight shift in the way her role at LMC changes.

“My job as the interim was to make sure things continued and stayed steady. Now that I’m secure, I’m learning to work with people to set new and more finite goals,” Ralston said. “It’s really a shift of making sure everything’s okay to now saying how can this be a little bit better.” Many of the speakers credited Ralston’s leadership ability and said they feel confident in her to lead the college long term. Coming out of the COVID-19 pandemic, Ralston helped bring the campus back to a normal state this 2023-24 school year. “I’m very much impressed and excited by her leadership style. The way she gravitates to people and people gravitate to her, it’s not shallow,” Interim Program Manager Leetha Robertson said. Interim Chancellor Mojdeh Medhizadeh added, “She doesn’t shy away from difficult conversations and she’s very thoughtful.” Ralston said she is not interested in moving around again and anticipates she will be at LMC for the foreseeable future. She added that it takes a bit to learn and be a part of a community and said she feels she’s in a good spot at LMC. This is the first time in the history of the Contra Costa Community College District that the Chancellor and

RALSTON three president positions have been held by women. Mehdizadeh said, “It’s about time.” Ralston received her bachelor’s degree in English from the University of Oregon and her Master of Arts and doctoral degrees in Comparative Literature from

the University of Washington, according to the LMC website. She has earned ‘excellence in teaching’ awards from Tacoma Community College and the University of Washington, and received a Fulbright fellowship for doctoral research at the Royal Library and University of Copenhagen in Denmark. Ralston also was the Executive Vice President for Educational Programs at Santa Barbara Community College District, overseeing academic affairs, student services, and institutional research. Before that, she was Vice President for Student Learning at College of the Desert, overseeing the academic affairs of the college. She also spent eight years as Dean of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences at Cuesta College in San Luis Obispo.

County DA to decide on LMC sexual assault case By Juan Cebreiros Correspondent

An investigation into an alleged sexual assault on the Los Medanos College campus has been turned over to the Contra Costa County District Attorney’s Office. Last month, a female LMC student reported to campus police that she was sexually assaulted in a hallway of the Nursing area in the College Complex building. According to a police report obtained by the LMC Experience, the victim claims the suspect, another LMC student, allegedly became aggressive, groped her and forcefully kissed her. Investigators report that they have identified the suspect but can’t release his name because he is younger than 18. The suspect could be facing charges of false imprisonment, battery and sexual battery. The DA’s Office told the LMC Experience on Tuesday, Oct. 17, they can’t comment on the status of the case because the suspect is a minor. According to the police report, the suspect will turn 18 in November. The victim described the alleged attack, which took place Sept. 12, to the police after her father reported the incident to authorities. She allegedly met the suspect earlier that day and claims he approached her in a friendly manner on the bottom floor of the College Complex building. The victim reported that the suspect called out “hey” from another floor above before taking an elevator down to her level and then said to her, “You’re cute. I saw you earlier.” The two reportedly conversed for about an hour and exchanged Instagrams before the suspect eventually walked the victim to her next class. Later that evening while the victim was in class, she told police the suspect messaged her on Instagram wanting to hang out. The two agreed to meet on the third floor of the College Complex Building during a break she took from class. At some point during this visit, the male suspect allegedly tried to kiss the victim, according to the police report. The alleged victim says the suspect then grabbed the victim’s neck and pushed her against a wall when she backed away from him. The alleged victim said the suspect eventually let her go, but as she attempted to walk

away, he tried to stop her once more by wrapping his arm around her. He then reportedly began to put his hand down her pants. “Stop, you’re making me uncomfortable,” the victim reported that she told the suspect, continuing, “This has happened to me before. I’ve been sexually assaulted, stop.” The alleged victim said she was eventually able to push the suspect away, exiting the Nursing area hallway as fast as she could. She then took an elevator down to the floor where her ongoing class was located. The suspect denies to campus police that any of this happened. The suspect says when they met in the Nursing area hallway, no kissing occurred and there was minimal contact, only hugging twice before parting ways. He denied putting his hand down the victim’s pants, recalling that they both walked out of the area laughing and hugging. The suspect was brought in for questioning but never arrested, according to campus police. However, he was issued a citation by Officer Fernando Inieguez and was told he could not return to the LMC campus until meeting with Dean of Students Success Dave Bellman. Bellman did not respond to a request for a comment. Campus police identified the suspect as a former Antioch High School student, according to the police report. The Antioch Police Department also indicated that the department “had two similar cases that involved the suspect at Antioch High School,” though it’s unclear how the suspect was involved in those cases or if charges were ever filed. It’s unclear if the suspect was ever charged in the two other cases. However, he could be facing three counts, including false imprisonment, battery on any person on school property and sexual battery if the DA decides to indict. In California, sexual battery is defined as a type of sexual assault where the suspect touches the “intimate parts” of another person without their conscent for the purpose of sexual gratification, arousal, or abuse, according to the state penal code. Committing battery on any person on school property is charged as a misdemeanor offense, while false imprisonment and sexual battery can be charged as either a misdemeanor or felony, according to kannlawoffice.com.

Vera’s Travel Tips

by Vera Martinez, Certified Travel Agent

Important Considerations For A Destination Wedding Are you considering a destination wedding? While you’ll likely be diving into detailed checklists and guides in the coming months, here are a few ideas to ponder. LEGAL OR SYMBOLIC? Consider whether you want the wedding to be the official moment of your marriage, or if you’d rather handle that on a separate day. This choice is especially important if you’re getting married in a different country, as it can involve navigating new paperwork, legalities and fees. CURRENCY CONVERSIONS and CARRY-ONS. Consider the local currency when choosing a destination for your wedding, as the exchange rate can greatly affect costs. Additionally, factor

in the price of party favors, attire, and other items, as well as the cost of transporting them to the destination. THE RIGHT VENUE FOR YOU... is the one that feels less like work and more like play. Consider allinclusive resorts for your wedding venue to simplify the planning process, as some include an in-house wedding planning team, discounted rooms, cocktail parties, receptions, and honeymoon packages. Every year, World Mental Health Day lands on Oct. 10. This year, the theme was “our minds, our rights” acquainting people with the idea that mental health is just as imporouth tant as physiress cal health. To celebrate the day, Los Medanos College’s Basic Needs Program coordinated its World Mental Health Day event. Edgar Sanchez, a Basic Needs Program associate, contacted local health and mental health organizations to invite them to the event, encouraging them to have a fun and interactive activity planned. Students could interact with local organizations and were provided free lunch by LMC’s Marketplace. “The whole idea is to have activi-

ties and events that reduce the stigma of mental health or needing basic needs. We all need something and that’s our job- trying to make the activities and the events or the tabling events fun and interactive,” said Megela Ohare, the Basic Needs Program coordinator. At the Marketplace table, Honymiel Montecillo, a Basic Needs Program’s student ambassador, created an activity for students that educated them on the resources available for students. “I had an activity where students grab a random letter from a bowl and then whatever letter they get, they need to guess what kind of resources we provide that starts with that letter. I also had little papers that had the hygiene drive that we promote as well as the other basic needs resources that we also provide like the crisis text line and TimelyCare,” said Montecillo. Through their events and program, Ohare and student ambassadors like Montecillo educate and provide students with resources such as: housing trans-

Halloween parties may lead to excessive drinking

Many college campuses maintain decades-long Halloween traditions on campus. Some of these attractions draw students and neighbors from across the state. While many college traditions emphasize inclusion, engagement, and creativity, others can promote uest heavy drinking comment and partying. Halloween parties are big tickets in many states. Yet, like with anything else, it’s a good idea to know the risks associated with heavy drinking and recreational drug use. It’s also good for parents to understand how to communicate their concerns and have available resources. Unfortunately, many college alcohol

G

and drug problems are related to binge drinking. These problems impact students, their families, and college communities. Binge drinking can lead to assault, sexual assault, academic issues, and alcohol or drug addiction. In California, statistics show that 10.5% of young adults ages 18 to 25 had an alcohol use disorder in the past year, while 8.5% became addicted to illicit drugs. This is not to say that every student attending Halloween parties becomes addicted or experiences a negative situation. It’s essential to know the potential risks. Parents should be having these conversations with their adult children. But avoid lecturing, threatening, or using scare tactics, and engage in two-way

conversations—be a reliable source of factual information. Help them understand that some choices have consequences that can potentially be severe or life-changing. Communicate to them about making responsible decisions and choices and show them how to avoid dangerous situations. Be prepared to share personal experiences and tips to avoid peer pressure. College social life and everything that comes with it should be enjoyable. Fortunately, there are resources for students who could be struggling. Parents and students should become familiar with campus advocacy groups, which are student-led groups, many of which are specific to mental health and addiction. Campus mental health centers are

available on college campuses, providing many services to students. In addition, there are likely counseling and disability centers in nearly every university and college in the country. Finally, NAMI, the National Alliance on Mental Illness, usually operates on campus. Halloween allows college students to get creative and let loose, providing relief from studying. Yet, be smart, make good choices, and look out for one another. Nick Hayes is a healthcare professional in the field of substance abuse and addiction recovery. Letters to the Editor

Please fix ‘sappy sidewalks’ in Brentwood

Editor: This is the time of year that casual walks become obstacle courses to avoid the sappy sidewalks and streets of Brentwood (or ‘Sapwood’ as it may be). Some of the areas are so bad that even trying to bypass the sidewalk to the street is unhelpful. I know the city is not going to pay to

address the problem (although they did approve the affected trees). I would hope the city would educate homeowners as to how to treat the trees to stop the sap. It really is a problem to the residents and cars parked in the sappy areas. An informational notice would do wonders. Come on, city. Take this on and improve the quality we all moved here to enjoy. If you have a love for poetry, both writing and reading, and introducing people to new literary works of art, the City of Brentwood is looking for their next Poet Laureate. The position was incorporated into the city’s municipal code in 2002, with three people holding the position since. Kati Short, who is Poet Laureate Emerita, was the longest-serving resident, from 2010-20. “We’re very happy to have this position,” said Thien Nguyen, Recreation Manager for the City of Brentwood. “(The Poet Laureate) is a person who would be a public advocate for the appreciation and advancement of arts, particularly poetry. We’re looking for someone to really be a champion, if you will, for literature and poetry for the city.” The Poet Laureate would be invited to public events throughout the city to share poetry and speak about literature. They will also be asked to compose original pieces for events such as inaugurations and dedications. “We have a strong, strong partnership with Contra Costa Libraries, which run the Brentwood Library, so of course we want to work with them,” Nguyen said. “They always have great events, whether it’s storytime or other events, that are for the community.” The two-year position is voluntary. Candidates also must be a resident of Brentwood. The city would like to see a commitment of 1-2 times a month, but that will vary according to the availability of whomever is awarded the role and

what events the city is hosting, according to Nguyen. “They have this saying, ‘A picture is worth a thousand words,’ but sometimes the right words– whether that is a poem, a passage, a quote– sometimes that captures things so much better,” said Nguyen. “With the diversity of Brentwood, you never know who things will touch, and how we can change people’s lives for the positive, with the celebration and advancement of the arts.” Nguyen hopes that youth will hear the Poet Laureate read their work at an event and be inspired to pursue their own work in the art and literacy fields. “It’s vital to have those examples and people who are always advocating for the advancement of the arts for the next generation,” Nguyen said. Once a Poet Laureate has been selected, the city will begin its search for a Youth Poet Laureate, which is open to any Brentwood resident 18 and younger. “The Poet Laureate will be a guide and mentor for the Youth Poet Laureate,” Nguyen said. Short credits the work of beat poet Lawrence Ferlinghetti for instilling her love of poetry, and also as the catalyst of her journey to becoming Poet Laureate. After serving for four years on the Literary Arts Subcommittee of the nowdefunct Brentwood Art Society, she was persuaded to apply for the laureate position, which Short held for the subsequent decade. “I loved it,” Short said. “I got to make the job whatever I wanted it to be, and at one point, we published books. see Poet page 19 Brought to you by

Heritage focused on getting first home win of season on Senior Night By Jeff Weisinger Staff Writer

Entering Friday’s Senior Night game against Freedom, the Heritage Patriots have more than just the pre-game Senior Night festivities on their mind. With a win on Friday, not only would it be the first home win of the season for the Patriots, but a win could send Heritage somewhere they haven’t been in nearly five seasons – the NCS playoffs. “We want to go to NCS,” senior wide receiver Brooks Davis said. “There haven’t been a lot of Heritage teams that have been there so we have a chance and I think we’re going to take it.” All three of Heritage’s wins this season are against other Division II teams (Foothill, Vintage, and Deer Valley). A win against Freedom on Friday night would put Heritage at 4-0 in their division, putting them in prime position to qualify for their first playoff spot since the 2017 season. “They’re really focused on trying to get into the Division II playoffs and get this home victory here against Freedom on Senior Night,” head coach Dave Fogelstrom said. “I really want the victory for them and I want them to experience

Our kids are going to play hard no matter what.” But, for seniors like lineman Cody Wong, the win at home Friday is top priority. “Just trying to get our first home win,

that’s a big thing for us,” Wong said. “I think the most important thing I’m looking forward to is just senior night and just finally getting a win in our home stadium.” Heritage took a lot of confidence

from their 56-28 loss at the undefeated BVAL league leader Pittsburg last Friday, keeping within two touchdowns of the Pirates in the first half. “One of the things that we’ve emphasized when we watched film is that when we execute and go to the right spot and do what we’re coached to do, we can play with anybody,” Fogelstrom said. “Like I said, (Pittsburg) is the gold standard, and you know what, when we executed, we moved the ball. The kids played hard and I was proud of them.” Along with the Senior Night festivities of the night, Friday night also sees Fogelstrom go up against Freedom cohead coach Kevin Hartwig, a longtime friend of his. “We’ve all been friends for 20 years,” Fogelstrom said. “We respect the heck out of what they do and it’s going to be a fun game. I expect them to be super competitive and well coached.” Freedom is coming off of a 44-0 loss at Antioch last Friday where the defense showed progress early on, however the offense continued to struggle. The Falcons have been shutout in each of the last two games, both against the BVAL’s top teams in Antioch and Pittsburg two weeks ago, getting outscored a combined 98-0.

Liberty looks to carry momentum into big matchup against BVAL leader Pittsburg By Juan Cebreiros Correspondent

After blowing out the Deer Valley Wolverines to stay undefeated in league play, the Liberty Lions start their preparations for a football game that will likely determine the champion of the Bay Valley Athletic League against the Pittsburg Pirates. Lions head coach Mike Cable is confident his team will be able to compete for 48 minutes against the Pirates, who remain the only undefeated team in the North Coast Section Division I standings. “If you look back to the first half of that Los Gatos game, that was some of the best football we’ve played. And if we play like that, we can hang with anybody,” Cable said. Injuries have been a problem for Liberty the past month with several starters on both offense and defense battling an injury. Last week, quarterback Sage Robertson and running back Jaxon Bell were removed from the game with back injuries, but Cable said they are good to go

this week. He also added that safety Kyle Cook is planning to play this week for the first time in over a month. However, Cable announced that linebacker Zaire Calhoun would not play this week. Calhoun is battling a knee injury that Cable believes will keep him sidelined until the playoffs. Entering this week’s game, Pittsburg

has given up just 28 points while scoring 168 in their past three games. Cable acknowledges that the Pirates are going to score points and emphasizes that it will be a team effort in order to win on Friday night. “They’re gonna score their points so our offense has to score to keep us in the game and our defense has to manage

ways to get us a few stops,” Cable said. Cable also mentioned the offense has to limit their mistakes. The group has turned the ball over in six of the eight games the Lions have played this year, totaling 13 giveaways. Following a shooting on campus Saturday night that rattled the community, Cable mentioned it has shaken some of his players. “Some of our guys are going through the grieving process right now and we just have to rally around them to show our support,” Cable said. With just two games remaining in the football season, this match is crucial for both sides in terms of playoff implications. The winner of this matchup is likely to be the winner of BVAL and have a high enough seed in the NCS playoffs to host a playoff game. With how competitive the NCS Division one playoff race is, it’s possible the loser of this match will be on the road come time for playoffs. “It’s gonna be intense, we have to limit our mistakes and it should be a battle,” Cable said.

Patriots swept by Monte Vista in first round of NCS volleyball playoffs Coast Section Division I playoffs, but also being able to repeat as Bay Valley Athletic League champions. “I didn’t think we would make it to NCS,” she said. “I didn’t think we would be league champions. I’m thoroughly pleased with the turnaround that this team had.” After losing to Liberty, the Patriots ended the season winning seven of their last eight games, including a sweep over the Lions at home in the final game of the season to win their fourth consecutive BVAL title. Heritage was able to turn their season around to win the BVAL and qualify for the playoffs. However, the Patriots playoff win drought carries on. The last time the Patriots girls volleyball team won a playoff game was during the 2014 season. While her team is ending the season with a first-round playoff exit, Hannigan views the season as a success. She said she learned a lot about her team down the stretch of the season and their ability to play in crucial games. “I learned they were little fighters and to never count them out,” Hannigan said. “It was an interesting year as far as the ups and downs, but I don’t think anybody’s leaving here going ‘This was a bad season,’” Heritage Patriots girls volleyball head coach Janet Hannigan said following the team’s loss to Monte Vista. The Patriots hosted an openinground playoff match against the Monte Vista Mustangs and were swept 3-0 (2515, 25-11 and 25-13). Despite the blowout loss, Hannigan gave credit to Monte Vista. “That’s a really good team, they run a really fast tempo offense and in our league we don’t really play anybody like that.” Hannigan added that playing against higher level league opponents is a big factor come playoff time. While Monte Vista is one of the more likely teams to win North Coast Section playoffs, they only finished fourth in their 10-team league behind schools like Foothill, who dropped only four sets out of their 13 league matches. “Our league everyone is kind of the same, it’s the same thing over there, but just on a higher level,” Hannigan said.

other common designation, if any, shown herein. Said sale will be held, but without covenant or warranty, express or implied, regarding title, possession, condition, or encumbrances, including fees, charges and expenses of the Trustee and of the trusts created by said Deed of Trust, to pay the remaining principal sums of the note(s) secured by said Deed of Trust. The total amount of the unpaid balance of the obligation secured by the property to be sold and reasonable estimated costs, expenses and advances at the time of the initial publication of the Notice of Sale is: $574,493.70 If the Trustee is unable to convey title for any reason, the successful bidder’s sole and exclusive remedy shall be the return of monies paid to the Trustee, and the successful bidder shall have no further recourse. The beneficiary under said Deed of Trust heretofore executed and delivered to the undersigned a written Declaration of Default and Demand for Sale, and a written Notice of Default and Election to Sell. The undersigned or its predecessor caused said Notice of Default and Election to Sell to be recorded in the county where the real property is located. NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the

mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call (844) 4777869 or visit this Internet Web site WWW. STOXPOSTING.COM, using the file number assigned to this case 112851-CA. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Web site. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale. NOTICE TO TENANT: Effective January 1, 2021, you may have a right to purchase this property after the trustee auction pursuant to Section 2924m of the California Civil Code. If you are an “eligible tenant buyer,” you can purchase the property if you match the last and highest bid placed at the trustee auction. If you are an “eligible bidder,” you may be able to purchase the property if you exceed the last and highest bid placed at the trustee auction. There are three steps to exercising this right of purchase. First, 48 hours after the date of the trustee sale, you can call (855) 313-3319, or visit this internet website www.clearreconcorp.com, using the file number assigned to this case 112851-CA to find the date on which the trustee’s sale was held, the amount of the last and highest bid, and the address of the trustee. Second, you must send a written notice of intent to place a bid so that the trustee receives it no more than 15 days after the trustee’s sale. Third, you must submit a bid so that the trustee receives it no more than 45 days after the trustee’s sale. If you think you may qualify as an “eligible tenant buyer” or “eligible bidder,” you should consider contacting an attorney or appropriate real estate professional immediately for advice regarding this potential right to purchase. GAMES & PUZZLES

Here’s How It Works:

Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

Freedom from page1 the rumors and panicked a bit, but felt safe in the end. “When I first heard about it, my friend said that he heard someone tell him that there were shooting threats,” DeLeon said. “I got scared. I wanted to leave, then I panicked a little bit because I felt like it might happen. But the school was aware in the end and there were cops, so I felt safe. And I felt okay after that.” Vongon added that “stuff like this always kind of happens.” “It’s concerning,” she said. “You don’t know if it’s real or fake because we’re used to having the shooting threats. I don’t know what would happen if there was actually a shooting threat. The crazy part about it is that somebody made one statement and that

just spread around and it became this whole thing. Kind of pointless, because it seemed like someone was really bored, because, who just does that?” Amaro hosted a community meeting along with Oakley police Chief Paul Beard in the school’s performing arts center Monday evening to address the rumors from the Facebook post and social media to a nearly packed auditorium of Freedom parents. The nearly 90-minute meeting started with school safety concerns to the students and even parents’ use and supervision of social media. One Freedom parent at the meeting wasn’t shy about her frustrations with the parent that sparked the rumor of the shooting threat on campus. “Other parents should check their facts before they open their mouths,”

said Mrs. Blunt, who asked to be named only by her last name. “I mean, I teach my kid don’t repeat it unless they know for sure it’s true, right? And if they don’t know it’s true, but it’s a threat, to take it to an admin. Why can’t a parent do that?” She added that “every parent should be watching their kids’ social media if they have it,” and that her daughter does not have any social media due to events like Monday. “It’s amazing, the power of social media,” Amaro said. “I think a lot of our teachers today chose to go ahead and address the situation about what happened yesterday and talked with (the students). I walked into a class and they said they just finished a conversation they had about the incidents, safety, social media, and the like. So I feel that

Halloween from page 1 treat bags as well so they can be easily spotted by motorists. Lastly, don’t forget to make sure they’re equipped with a flashlight or glow stick – musthave accessories for any costume. • Make sure costumes are well-fitted and safe -- Being visible isn’t the only safety consideration for a costume. The right fit is just as important. Here’s some advice on keeping your child’s ensemble safe and secure: Prevent accidental tripping or entanglement by making sure costumes aren’t too big or long Avoid masks that block vision, but if your child wears one – it should have large eye, nose and mouth openings. You can also opt for makeup or face paint as an alternative. Costumes, wigs and accessories should contain a label indicating they are flame resistant Make sure accessories such as swords, canes, or sticks are not sharp or too long • Makeup safety -- If makeup is a part of your child’s Halloween costume plans, make sure it is non-toxic and test it on a small area first. Before your child goes to bed, make sure to remove all makeup. • Jack-o-lantern safety -- Young children can paint or color their pumpkins instead of carving. Or have them draw a face with markers and an adult can do the carving. Use colorful glow sticks inside your Jack-o-lanterns instead of candles to prevent burns. Home decoration safety If you’re turning your home into a haunted house, keep safety in mind: make sure steps, sidewalks, porches and paths are well-lit and free of decorations and holi-

Council from page 1 hears said during the meeting. However, its implementation was delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic. Funding for the program was included in the 2022/23 – 2023/24 General Fund Operating Budget when it was adopted, according to staff reports. The allocated $26,418 will pay for four interns and “related program costs.” “This internship program is built to be a focused learning experience for students,” Management Analyst Ashley Sosa said when presenting it to the council. “Interns will not only be getting onthe-job training and experience related to their studies, but they’ll also be gaining knowledge about the public sector as a whole.” Sosa described the program as a

they’re more aware of what can happen when misinformation goes to print.” Both Vongon and DeLeon added that social media hasn’t been reliable and that threats, even false ones like Monday’s, are sort of the norm. “This generation, social media has like never really been the most reliable source,” Vongon said. “(It’s) kind of normal (to have) threats going around. It’s just kind of ordinary.” “I feel like social media really does influence the whole thing because sometimes people can just say fake things, and then other people would think of it as real,” DeLeon added. “Then just rumors and then it’s like playing telephone with social media. Sometimes it’s always fake. Sometimes it’s always real.” To view a video, visit www.thepress.net/ multimedia

in normal positions with valuables out of sight. Install outdoor lighting (activated by a photocell or movement) to illuminate the area around your home during Halloween. • Consider purchasing a security system that directly alerts police to intruders. • Trim shrubs and large trees before Halloween so trespassers have fewer hiding spots. • Make sure your homeowners insurance policy is up-to-date. Car and driving safety tips • Protect your car -- Park inside your garage if you have one. If you do not have a garage you may want to consider investing in some outdoor lighting for your driveway and yard. Lock your vehicle, consider a car alarm and hide your valuables. Don’t give thieves any more incentive to break into your car. Contra Costa Health Services spokesman Will Harper has offered this advice. “We would echo the CDC’s Halloween tips: Stay home if you’re sick, get tested if you have symptoms and remember the general COVID rule of thumb; outside is safer than inside,” said “If possible, host parties outdoors or make sure the ventilation is good if it’s indoors.” Due to the holiday, health and county officials encourage people to be mindful and patient due to much more vehicle traffic and trick-or-treaters driving and walking around in surrounding neighborhoods. Drivers are also advised to be aware of trick-or-treaters walking around, especially in residential neighborhoods, and to proceed with caution while driving in these areas. Drivers are also discouraged from looking at their phones while driving. •

day props. Keep decorations away from fireplaces and candles. • Take precautions against pranks and vandalism -- It often increases during Halloween. That’s why taking these precautions is a good idea: • If you’re going away during Halloween, make it seem like you’re still home by turning down the volume of your answering machine and phone, covering your garage windows, and leaving your curtains

The first step in rolling out the program will be outreach, according to Sosa’s presentation, which will involve staff visiting the local high schools – with emphasis on Heritage and Liberty over Freedom since Freedom is in Oakley and most students are Oakley residents. Applications will be accepted from Nov. 17 to Dec. 4 before an in-person interview process lasts from Dec. 11-Dec. 22. Applicants may apply on www.governmentjobs.com and must include a cover letter and recommendation from a teacher.

They will start their jobs on Jan. 8, 2024. Interns will not receive class credit for work hours, but will receive community service hours, according to Eric Faulkner, the assistant superintendent for Liberty Union High School District. Community service hours are required for graduation and can be started the second semester of a student’s junior year. The entry-level part of the program will be targeted primarily at high school juniors and seniors but may include some sophomores, Faulkner said. Other topics discussed at the meeting included: • Adoption of an ordinance that would allow the delivery of medical cannabis to bring the city municipal code into compliance with a new state law going into effect on Jan. 1,

2024. The amendment was discussed at length during the Oct. 10 meeting. The 5-0 approval of the tentative parcel map for Hanson Lane, a subdivision that would include 94 single-family residential homes at 251 Hanson Lane. The project had previously been approved by the Planning Commission before being called for review by the City Council. A future agenda item requested by Councilmember Pa’tanisha Pierson to discuss the creation of a Race and Equity Commission for the city of Brentwood. Pierson also requested the city discuss a citywide racial equity plan as well as the creation of an anti-racism and anti-hate crime policy.

Boy, 16, killed in Oakley weekend house party shooting identified; still no suspect By Jeff Weisinger Staff Writer

The 16-year-old student who was killed late Saturday night at a house party in Oakley has been identified by the Contra Costa County Sheriff Coroner’s office on Tuesday. The victim was identified as Ke’Marion Tucker from Brentwood. The other gunshot victims were a 17-year-old girl, who was released from the hospital, and two boys, ages 15 and 16, both who are still hospitalized. All three are expected to be okay, the county Office of The Sheriff said. Oakley police chief Paul Beard spoke at a community meeting at Freedom High School Monday evening where he addressed the Freedom High School families on the investigation along with questions as to why the party wasn’t shut down immediately when Oakley police arrived for, originally, a noise complaint about a halfhour before the shooting took place. “It’s very normal for us to think that there is an easy button like that,” Beard told the crowd Monday evening. “When I get sent to these types of calls, it’s just

Poet from page 10 We had open mics.” Short was concerned about what she called the lack of poetry in the public schools, so she took it upon herself to visit schools in the district and expose more students to the art form. “You can’t teach poetry, you can only talk about poetry,” Short said. “You can expose people to poetry and let them know there is more than one kind of poetry…There is so much poetry out there that speaks to my heart.” Since being named Poet Laureate Emerita, Short has continued holding monthly open mic nights via Zoom, which she started during COVID-19. Prior to the pandemic, the open mics were held in person at the Brentwood Community Center, and Short hopes that whoever is selected as the next Poet

I am not met with compliance, I’m met with resistance.” He also explained that the police left the residence at Shannon Way to handle other calls. “At 10:35 on Shannon Way, this call did involve juveniles at a party and mari-

juana use and that sort of thing,” he explained. “At 10:36, I have the same type of problem, so my officers had to split their attention and split resources and we had to address both of these calls at the same time. “At 11:01, because of where the other

Laureate will resume holding them in person, while she continues to offer the Zoom option for people who are unable to attend a public event. Hosting the open mic nights has been Short’s favorite aspect of her time as Poet Laureate. “I really enjoy sharing my work and hearing other people’s work,” said Short. “It means so much to me.” Open mic nights are held the second Thursday of each month at 6:30 p.m. Email katishort@yahoo.com for the Zoom link. The next open mic night will be Thursday, Nov. 9. All short work — poetry, short story, nonfiction or any other creative work — is welcome. Short emphasized the importance of building relationships as part of the Laureate role, with schools, local businesses, and the community as a whole.

She said part of building relationships is being kind to each other. “I think if everybody, from Washington, D.C. down, were to try to just be kinder, we’d have a better place to live,” Short said. Once again, Short recalls a line from another Ferlinghetti piece, “I Am Waiting,” as one that she feels sums up life – “I am awaiting perpetually and forever a renaissance of wonder.” Applications for Poet Laureate are available online, and the position will remain open until it has been filled. The city’s Arts Commission will review all applications, before selecting candidates to be interviewed. Each candidate will also be expected to present a poem. The Poet Laureate position is one of many programs spearheaded by the city’s Arts Commission, which is run by volunteer members who are dedicated to

I feel confident in the ability and skills of our investigators to bring this case to a positive resolution. The more I learn about this case the more angry and sad I get that a multi-casualty event occurred. The fact that it involved juveniles – children, makes it even worse. This does not belong in Oakley. This does not belong anywhere.”
