City braces for deep deficit Staff Writer As the city budget faces a $700,000 deficit over the next 18 months, officials are considering a number of cuts, including elimination of the Planning Commission, furloughing city workers one day per month, scaling back the city’s 10th anniversary celebrations and reducing contributions to community organizations. “We have been affected by the economic slowdown like everybody else,” city Finance Director Paul Abelson told the council at a special meeting on Jan. 20. “In the current year we are seeing a reduction in assessed values, which affects property taxes. We are continuing to see a slowdown in sales taxes like everybody else. Development fees, planning activities and (building) applications have declined significantly.” Abelson displayed a graph showing that revenues to the city’s General Fund that peaked at nearly $16 million in the 2006-07 budget year have been declining ever since and are estimated to be less than $13 million in the 2009-10 budget year, which begins in July. At the same time, city expenditures have remained fairly steady in the mid-$13 million range since 2005-06. As a result, the city budget is projected to be in a spending deficit in the current budget year and next, totaling to about $700,000, unless cuts are made or the city’s reserve fund is drawn down. Drawing down that fund is a definite option because currently the reserve is a healthy

Revenues to the city’s General Fund peaked at nearly $16 million in the 2006-07 budget year and have been declining ever since to less than $13 million in next year’s budget. $3.8 million, which is more than 29 percent of the General Fund budget. City policy specifies a reserve fund of at least 20 percent. But before dipping into that reserve, the council members said they first want to look at reducing the budget. City Manager Bryan Montgomery has notified city employees that beginning in March,

they will be required to take one unpaid day off each month, representing a 4.5-percent decrease in employee salaries. In addition, City Hall is planned to be closed for the last two weeks of the year, vacant positions may not be filled and the council is postponing its scheduled pay increase.

Porn zone 1,000 feet from school by Dave Roberts Staff Writer Bound by federal laws that prohibit an outright ban on sex shops, peep shows and strip clubs, the City Council this week unanimously approved an ordinance that would permit such establishments about three football fields away from the children attending Orchard Park School. The ordinance allows so-called “adult businesses” to set up shop in a light-industrial area on either side of Sandy Lane, north of Oakley Road, east of Neroly Road and west of Live Oak Avenue. The businesses cannot be closer than 1,000 feet from the property line of a school, park, church or residential zone. Orchard Park School is a K8 school on Live Oak Avenue just north of Oakley Road. The children attending there would be a couple of long blocks away from the pos-

council meetings. “I’m shocked, disappointed and angered,” AUSD board president Walter Ruehlig said via e-mail on Wednesday. “I … didn’t know it was up for Oakley vote last night, and definitely didn’t know it might be 1,000 feet from a school. I have calls in to our school superintendent, mayor, city manager and city counsel to see what we can do. “This must be a cruel joke.

Morally, what kind of message do we as elders send impressionable kids? And, practically, what kind of an adult clientele and arousement do we want in the vicinity of a grade school?! Tax dollars are great, but let’s be responsible.” Oakley Planning Commissioner Don Scheer, who was the only person to speak against the ordinance at Tuesday’s meeting, told the council he’s concerned that residents in that area have not been adequately notified. “I’m not too sure those folks understand what’s going on here, and that it could end up in their back yards,” he said. “Maybe we should notify them individually to let them know what might happen behind their houses.” He’s also concerned that if the Pump It Up Party Zone business on Neroly Road decides to close shop,

Better yet, name one from far East County. If you’re stumped, Leonard Roudman can help. Each year Roudman, senior community library manager, brings a Bay Area author to the Brentwood Library to discuss the satisfaction and challenge of the writing process. This Tuesday, Feb. 3, not one but five authors will be in attendance for this year’s author program, and all come from the Delta area. “I don’t think many people realize how many authors there are who not only live in the Bay Area but live in this part of Contra Costa County,” said Roudman. “I try to get at least one author to come out to the library every year, but this year the flood gates just opened and several authors got in touch with me. More people are finding ways to get their work published.” The mission of the Brentwood Library is to promote literacy and encourage people to fall in love with reading again or for the first time. Roudman said part of that process is promoting writing, and an event like this is educational for novice writers looking for that first break as well as entertaining for the average literature fanatic. “It’s neat to hear the authors’ stories, but these talks are also encouraging for aspiring authors,” Roudman said. “I like to give local authors this fo-

This event is to celebrate the successes of our local writers as well as provide encouragement to those who are still in the early stages of the writing process.” The featured authors come from various backgrounds and write for different genres, so attendees will be exposed to several perspectives on writing. The event will include presentations from Paul Cardoza, who got the idea for his crime novel “Take and Seek” after working as a fingerprint technician for the Contra Costa County’s sheriff office in the 1980s, while Susan Tikalsky will share a more personal story with “A Prayer Journal Through Mental Illness.” Brentwood Poet Laureate Diane Lando will be there to discuss her coming-of-age novel “The Bentwood Creek Chronicles,” and Mel Stolhand will discuss “Changing Seasons,” a novel about a girl growing up during World War II. This year marks the 25th anniversary of Relay For Life, an event that raises money to prosecute the war on cancer. Car thief makes weird trade-in by Ruth Roberts Staff Writer When Wendy Boatwright’s car was stolen out of her driveway late last week, the Brentwood resident figured her 1997 Mustang was gone for good. But in a classic case of truth being stranger than fiction, Boatwright’s car was indeed recovered – but not by local authorities. The rag top convertible was returned by the thief. “How funny is that?” asked Boatwright, who says she has no idea who the thief is. “Somebody steals my car and then decides it’s not good enough and returns it? That’s a first for me.” And a first for the Brentwood Police Department as well. When an officer arrived at Boatwright’s home to take her report, she admits to being flummoxed. “The officer looked at me and said, ‘I hope this isn’t a joke,’” said Boatwright. “And I thought, ‘What is he talking about?’ It turns out my car was parked on the backside of my house on a side street. The thief had taken it and then decided he didn’t want it, I guess, and brought it back.” Proving that even thieves can be thoughtful, the robber, who had snuck into Boatwright’s house the night before and kyped her key ring, removed the car key and left it on a rock in her driveway along with her emergency roadside kit, presumably after he brought back the car. But mystery doesn’t end there. While the officer was taking Boat-

The officer initially thought it was just a coincidence that two cars had been stolen on the same street, but when the Toyota Camry was later recovered a few miles away, the suspect was found standing by the white Camry with Boatwright’s house keys in his pocket. Another case of silly criminals caught in the act? “Yes, this is definitely one of those stories,” said Sgt. Sergio Verbis. “We get those occasionally. But all’s well that ends well, and that’s how we like them.” The 28-year-old suspect was booked into the county jail in Martinez, where he

remains on two counts of grand theft, possession of stolen items and burglary. Why the thief returned her Ford and swapped it for the neighbor’s Toyota is likely to remain a secret, but as for Boatwright, she’s just happy to have her car back safe and sound. “I’m guessing that he liked the Camry better than my old Mustang,” said Boatwright of her 13-year-old car. “It is kind of beat up, there’s no stereo, the engine light goes on all the time, and top is taped and torn, so I guess he decided to dump it for something better. I didn’t know that thieves were so picky. But that’s OK. I’m just glad to have it back; it’s the only car I’ve got.”

1031 WARNING Summit Accommodators 1031 Exchange filed for bankruptcy recently. Summit is an “accommodator” of 1031 exchanges. A 1031 is where a real estate investor exchanges one investment property for another, and if they follow the rules, their capital gains taxes are deferred. One of the rules is that the investor cannot take possession of the funds from the sale of the first property before they buy the second property. This means they have to hire another company who takes possession of their money on their behalf until the replacement property is purchased. We are talking about large sums of money, here. From hundreds of thousands, to possibly millions of dollars for some transactions. Most of these clients are just looking for somewhere “safe” to park their money in order to follow the 1031 rules. They are usually much more concerned with the return OF their money than the return ON their money. Therefore, many 1031 accommodators deposit their clients’ funds into bank accounts insured by the federal government (FDIC insured).

Patriot Sentinel Riders: supporting veterans The Patriot Sentinel Riders is a group of military veterans and supporters who ride motorcycles in direct support of active and inactive military veterans and their families. The Riders attend any activity relating to veterans. Their most n o t e wo r t hy accomplishments include ongoing maintenance of the Mare Island Naval Cemetery, facilitating the U.S. Army’s adoption of the City of Antioch, implementing installation of the American flag and POW-MIA flag at the Antioch Marina Veterans Memorial, implementing procedures at the Antioch Post Office for flying the POW-MIA flag on certain holidays, and partnering with the City of Antioch in planning the Memorial Day ceremony and the first-ever Veterans Day parade. The group also visits veterans at area

veterans’ hospitals, and attend military funerals. Future plans include newspaper articles profiling veterans and preparing fundraisers to respond to the needs of veterans. The Patriot Sentinel Riders also support and attend other veteran clubs and organizations events. According to Delta Chapter President Larry “Gator” Thomas, “oftentimes we are mistaken or confused with the Patriot Guard, who primarily perform military escort and guard duty. The problem is that the 1031 accommodation industry doesn’t have much regulation or oversight, so these companies have some wide latitude as to where they deposit their clients’ money. It turns out that Summit was investing their clients’ funds into what turned out to be incredibly risky real estate development deals that went south. At this point I’m not sure if Summit was passing this idea off as being “safe” to their clients, or if their clients were just drawn to the promise of higher returns on their money and didn’t do their due diligence. Whichever it was, it’s a good lesson for the rest of us. Ask if your 1031 accommodator is depositing your funds into FDIC insured accounts. If not, that should send up some red flags. Dentists and doctors and agents, oh my! by Elysia Cook Correspondent Pulling teeth, designing buildings and going undercover represent a smattering of the career paths showcased on Jan. 15 at Heritage High School’s inaugural Career Fair. A cornucopia of career reps gave event attendees valuable insight into the world of work. “The intent of the Career Fair and our academies is to offer guidance to students who are interested in focusing their coursework, ultimately linking them to employment or college opportunities after high school,” said Environmental Science Academy Coordinator and Heritage teacher Spencer Holmes. The event featured an open forum and presentations by each job professional. During the forum, audience members got to meet the professionals and talk with them one-on-one. “It was great,” said Dr. Eric Mariotti, a plastic surgeon who owns a private practice in Concord. “The initial MPR (Multi-Purpose Room) walk-around fair was very informative for the students,” said Sarah Kaplan, Mariotti’s Certified Physician Assistant (PA-C). “Everyone and their parents had a lot of questions, mostly about the schooling involved.” Heritage junior Melany Del Carpio appreciated the “different fields of work and professionals who could talk to you

I would go again next year, because even though I don’t know what I want to be (when I’m older), I’d like to see the variety of different professions.” Attendees also took advantage of more in-depth presentations following the forum. Many of the presenters gave advice that pertained not just to their profession, but how to succeed anywhere in life. “If you don’t get into the school of your choice, don’t give up,” said Lance Crannell, who works for SDG Architects, Inc. “Get involved in college career academy programs over the summer. They allow you to really immerse yourself in what you want to do.” Bill Scanlon, an FBI agent based in San Francisco, shared some tips on how to gain an advantage in the workplace. “Knowing a

second language really helps,” he said. And for aspiring FBI agents, “Having a computer science degree is also a great advantage.” Career Fair coordinators hope to make the event a tradition. “For a first-time event, it was very successful,” said Engineering Technology Academy Coordinator Laurie Laprade. “It’d be nice to see it grow in the

sense of the number of represented fields each year, and maybe turn it into a college and career fair eventually. “The whole idea of the fair was so that the kids could understand that the classes they take in high school are a taste of what they’ll get in college – and eventually a career,” Laprade added.

Lend a hand to the band Heritage High School Band Director Steve Ernest is looking for donations of instruments for the school’s music program. The instruments must be in good condition. Due to the lack of funding as a result of state budget cuts, the program can not

A Moral Dilemma Before diving too deep into this subject, let us make it very clear that I am not suggesting, or leaning one way or another, rather, simply supplying information. And when I say “information” I do not mean legal advice – please CONSULT WITH A BANKRUPTCY SPECIALIST AND TAX ADVISER as this IS NOT INTENDED TO BE A PRIMER ON HOW TO AVOID YOUR DEBTS AND LOAN LIABILITY. So with that disclaimer, let’s get right into the thick of things and touch base on California’s anti-deficiency law - a law that originated during the Depression years to protect the banks, but is now doing just the opposite due to the rampant greed that kept them (the banks) from acting rationally in their own self-interest. You see California, as well as a handful of other states, have laws in place that allow a homeowner to simply walk away from their residence while not being held financially responsible for the debt they washed their hands clean of. In other words California has become the poster child for the “buy-and-bail” syndrome. As the numbers reflect, currently in California one out of every 204 loans has defaulted, many of you have either already had to, or will be, dealing with the moral dilemma of either letting your property go, or, according to Mr. Henry Paulson, “doing the right thing” and bleeding out your life-savings, IRA and credit card balances just to hold onto your house. Again, I’m not suggesting one way or another but let us be realists and come to grips with two very important facts when making any large financial decisions. First, it seems the only time we hear a fingerwagging lecture regarding money with con-

tent such as you “should”, or you “ought to”, is when it may be in your best interest to do the opposite; and second, the market will never function on moral obligations alone…this is capitalism, and money should work. Obviously though, right now, money is not working, and not working on an extreme level which has caused Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac to actually rework their foreclosure policies in order to deal with the difficult Situation

Liberty finds its Idol by Beth Lichtenberger Correspondent Every one in the audience cheered and called for encores as Liberty High School students put on a spectacular display of talent at the school’s performing arts center last Friday in the seventh annual Liberty Idol competition. The event benefited Ethiopia Reads, a charity that works to improve literacy and form the foundation to a culture of

reading in Ethiopia by building libraries, publishing books in Ethiopian languages, and training teachers and librarians. Contestants were Jillian Butler, Laura Means, Sarah Hutchison, Melia Salas, Jake Tickner, Veronica Rosa, Megan Niber, Timmy Elwess and Kieth Nesbitt. Freeze public-servant salaries Editor: I noticed that one of the new president’s first actions was freezing the salaries of White House staff (and here is the key) who make over $100,000 annually. I also noticed in the local paper that the local college chancellor is up for an 18-percent raise ($ 38,000) on top of her $209,000 salary. Who knows how many perks are added to that? Also, I remember looking up on the Internet the salaries of all the Contra Costa County employees (tinyurl.com/68dyes). The information is staggering. The county has several hundred employees making over six-digit-figure salaries. In fact, I noticed some in the $300,000 and even $400,000 salary range. This is absurd. When our economy is dependant on the taxpayer (you and I), these dollars do not reflect “public servants.” These salaries are “pots of gold” dished out from our tax dollars. While it is very true that we have extremely talented employees in the public sector, the need to pay these types of salaries is becoming very burdensome on our overall services. The excuses used by our public leaders are “If we do not pay more to this person, we may lose them to another agency.” This type of mythology is what is creating the “leapfrog effect.” One agency pays more so the competing agency pays more plus some (and the cycle continues), with the public taxpayer losing in all respects. In addition, the benefit retirement for these salaried employees becomes a “pyramid-type scheme.” The first people to retire will place the most burden on the system. The bottom employees will end up needing to be bailed out by us (the taxpayer) or negotiate less. This is happening right now in our county. We are trading public services for previous retirement needs due to the obscene salaries created by the “leapfrog effect.” I think the State of California and the counties should follow the new

Moreover, any raises above the cost of living should be approved by the voters of the agency requesting the increase. If a public servant person can not live off of $1,925 plus benefits every week, that person needs to work in the private sector, where risk is not dependant on us (the taxpayer). Tires – and ballots – checked Editor: We cannot get off our minds a comment made on Jan. 9 in this newspaper by CSD Director David Piepho regarding the disastrous and negligent oversight by the CSD of Southwest Water and the spill that occurred under its watch. Director Piepho was quoted as saying, “It is unfortunate that it took this to fix things, but you don’t know your tires are bald until you get a flat tire.” Is this director saying it took an approximate 100,000gallon sewage spill (along with two other spills) to get him and the CSD Board to pay attention to what was going on, and it was only the numerous spills that woke them up? It is very apparent that this community has been “checking their own tires” as one is supposed to do, because the voters of this community took it upon themselves in the November election to replace two of the “bald tires” with Director Simon and Director Tetreault. The voters were allowed to replace only two of the four “bald tires,” but we are betting when 2010 comes around, the voters will be looking to replace other of the CSD Board members who sat on the board while Southwest Water went unchecked, causing the community to fail two facility inspections and make front-page news in every local newspaper. Dream event Editor: Politics aside, January 19, 2009 was a day not only to be immensely proud of the grandest of human experiments, American democracy, but a day to be proud of humanity’s promise. Antioch justly shared in that celebration. Bouquets to Council Member Reggie Moore for having the dream and for the team of tireless organizers who made the first-ever Antioch Martin Luther King Birthday Tribute happen. Happen it did. Coming from a baptism, I was five minutes late and scrambled

into the upper reaches of the balcony for a seat (luckily, no such thing as a bad seat at the vintage 1927 El Campanil Theatre). Minutes later it was standing room only in a theater seating 698. The organizers had hoped for 200 people and prayed for 300. Ah, sweet surprise. Crowd wasn’t the sole reason to color the event a success. If ever there was a mixed crowd, this was it. It was a resplendent swath of humanity where black, white and brown stood tall and stood beautiful. Then credit three hours of knockyour-socks-off show. Kudos to the school contest winners: high school $1,000 MLK youth art contest first prize went to Delta Performing Arts Academy; $500 second prize to Devonaire Bryant of Bidwell High; $300 third prize to Lindsey Walker, Kim Calalsi, Daryl Jackson and Spencer Dobbins of Deer Valley; middle school first prize went to Cheyenne Navarro of Antioch Middle; second prize to Rodrigo Guitterez of Antioch Middle; and third prize to Siska Blaz of Dallas Ranch Middle. Cheers to presenters Mary Rocha, Antioch City Council; and David Fraser, District 5 Board of Supervisor Federal Glover’s Chief of Staff; and to keynote speaker A.U.S.D. Yes, for one enchanted afternoon in mid-January, under the roof of the gilded, frescoed ceilings of the fabled El Campanil Theatre, which has transfixed audiences with the wizardry of performing icons Clark Gable, Duke Ellington, Roy Rogers, Al Jolsen, Groucho Marx and Sally Rand, Antioch was again spellbound. This time the magic was borne not on keyboards, nor comedic lines, nor fan dances, but on the wings of a dream inspired by a giant of a man gazing from a mountaintop of hope. The dream transported the spirits of 700 citizens to the rafters and unto a world beyond where the substance of soul, not the superficialities of skin shade, counted; a world in which one race ruled, the human race; a world in which black, white, red and brown were all cherished as God’s chosen heirs. Is it not liberating to dream? After all, as is said, there is no Mahatma Gandhi, no Martin Luther King, no John or Robert Kennedy left. There is, though, you and I.

Bolstering the boys Editor: Boy Scout Troop 152 is pleased to share our great success with our first-ever tree lot. From families who purchased more than 600 trees to local business owners who donated goods, our community showed that a Grinchy economy has no power over East County’s holiday spirit and good will. Special thanks to the many neighbors and friends, old and new, who helped us spread the word by recommending us or posting a sign. Some of the local business and community leaders essential to our efforts included Scheer Home Systems, Dr. Michael Painter, IFCO/RPC/PALLET/SYSTEMS, City of Oakley, Enrique Cinquini, Mazzy Fire Protection, the Oakley and Antioch school districts, Print Club and our local newspapers. In the wake of recent budget reductions and staff cutbacks, the Contra Costa County Office of the Sheriff is now offering online reporting of certain crimes to residents of Discovery Bay and Oakley. Reporting some crimes online allows deputies more time for policing, but it comes at the expense of personalized service. “Our organizational culture demands timely and personal responses to calls from our citizens” said Sheriff Warren E. Rupf. “While the use of this new program reduces personal contact, we must adjust to the debilitating loss of available staff.” Online reports pertain to non-emergency crimes for which no suspect can be identified: abandoned vehicles, forgery, ha-

rassing phone calls, passing of bad checks, trespassing, counterfeiting, fraudulent access of a computer, littering, public nuisance, vandalism, defrauding of an innkeeper, fraudulent use of a credit card, lost property, theft (including identity theft) and fraud. Citizens may submit crime tips and barking-dog complaints, request vacation house checks and report illegal fireworks. Business poster scam The Brentwood Chamber of Commerce this week alerted its members to a possible scam involving posters that employers are required to display in their place of business. “There are two men, and a man and a women, going to local businesses saying that they are from the state, requesting to see your Business Employment Poster,” Harry York, chamber CEO wrote in an e-mail alert. “Then they try to sell you a poster for $118. These men and women are not legitimate.” Local police have been alerted to the

scam, York said, and anyone encountering the people involved should call 911. In the past, the donations to community organizations have included funding for small-business training at City Hall, the Loaves and Fishes program, the Homeless Animals Lifeline Organization, advertising East County’s agricultural resources, the Almond Festival, the Halloween program at the Redmen/Pocahontas Hall, the Delta Science Center and bass fishing tournaments.

Porn from page 1A adult businesses could open up on that road because there would no longer be a need for a thousand-foot buffer from an existing business. “That’s intolerable and not consistent with Oakley as a family-friendly city,” said Scheer. “(The ordinance) needs to (specify) a fixed location, and not be dependent on a changing (1,000-foot) radius.” He urged the council to not allow sexoriented businesses anywhere in Oakley, regardless of federal and state regulations that state that such businesses can be restricted as to where they can locate but that they cannot be banned altogether.

Some council members said they plan to cut the donations by 40 percent, and indicated they would give a higher priority to an organization like Loaves and Fishes, which feeds the hungry, as well as to the fishing tournaments, which bring in business for local restaurants and Comfort Suites. The plan to hold monthly events celebrating Oakley’s 10th anniversary as a city, including the monthly summer concert series, has been scaled back to just four events and without the concerts by the rock and country tribute bands that have performed in the past. July’s Cityhood Celebration will still feature the fireworks display, but the entertainment might be more on the order of threelegged races and balloon tossing. In October there will be a Harvest Festival, in December a tree-lighting at City Hall and in May of

2010 a Passport to Parks and Science Week. Any music at those events would be provided by local or school bands. The decision to eliminate the Planning Commission for the next year or two is made easier by the fact that there is not much new development planned in Oakley in that time frame for the commission to review. Instead, the commission would be dealing with matters that would have come before the council for approval in any case, such as updating the city’s housing plan, the downtown plan, the sign ordinance and the environmental report for the East Cypress Corridor. With two planning commissioners in the audience, council members were apologetic as they discussed eliminating their service to the city, but in unanimous agreement that the city needs to save money where it can.

“I served on the first Planning Commission for four years – what an incredibly important role they play in this whole process,” said Councilman Kevin Romick. “It’s always good to have a multitude of ideas and thoughts. However, when things get lean and as tough as I think they are going to get – because I don’t think we’ve hit bottom yet as far as the economy – we have to look where we can to save money. “It’s important that we tighten the belt as tight as we can and move forward and hope the times get better, but prepare for the worst in the process. We’ve done without a Planning Commission for a time in the past; we can do it once again. I do it with a great deal of concern, because I realize the important role they play in this process.” The council is expected to take action on some of the cuts in February.

“My personal feeling is we don’t have a good place for these businesses in Oakley,” said Scheer. “And we ought to have the backbone to just say no and trust that we will be protected from First Amendment lawsuits because we have taken a stand for what’s morally right in this town.” Council members, who have indicated at previous meetings that they would prefer to ban adult businesses, defended the ordinance as a necessary governmental requirement. “By law, we have to have these provisions on the book,” said Councilwoman Pat Anderson. “I believe that I’m showing backbone to allow First Amendment rights to be protected, even over my personal morals.”

Councilman Kevin Romick argued that it’s better for Oakley to regulate these businesses than have a court do it. “I want to make sure that people know we are not recruiting adult businesses by placing this ordinance out there,” he said. “Every city has zoning for adult businesses. Rather than challenge the legal system and lose and have a judge determine where the location would be, I would rather we try to find the correct location and best spot in the city.” “This is a tough one for any city,” acknowledged Councilman Jim Frazier. “I’m glad that staff has brought this up beforehand. (Without the ordinance) an adult business could have located anywhere. At least we

have a plan to limit the areas they will be able to locate. The conditions set forth are very stringent. “We are not able to rebut a First Amendment lawsuit with taxpayer dollars. I think it’s prudent to be able to locate this in a place that has the least amount of impact. I do like the comment about the (nearby residents and businesses) being notified of the possibility if a business does put in an application for this process.” No applications have been filed for adult businesses so far. The council voted 4-0 to approve the ordinance; Councilman Bruce Connelley was absent.

The second annual Next Level Athletes (formally Believe and Achieve) football camp will be held at Diablo Valley College, 321 Golf Club Road in Pleasant Hill, on Feb. 15 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The camp will provide athletes with off-season training methods and the skills needed to be successful on and off the field, such as off-season study habits and the importance of a healthy diet. New additions to the camp this year will be the Drugs and HIV/AIDS Awareness Seminar, which will educate the athletes about obstacles they might face throughout life. Some former camp attendees went on to enjoy successful football campaigns this past year. Former De La Salle High School standout RB Kylan Butler (University of Arizona) rushed for nearly 1,300 yards and 15 touchdowns. Ohio University’s DB Travis Carrie made 35 tackles, an interception, a pass defense and five punt returns, earning top freshman honors on the team. Carrie will be entering his sophomore season as the team’s number-one defensive back. Both athletes attribute part of their success to attending the Next Level Athletes camp last winter. “The camp helped me with my footwork and really emphasized technique

and showed me how to come out of my breaks as fast as possible,” Butler said. “It helped me prepare for other camps and the season because I knew what the coaches were looking for when they asked me to perform drills.” “The camp showed me the importance of dedication, proper techniques and how to stay motivated to strive for success at the next level,” Carrie said. “I would encourage all athletes to attend the Next Level Athletes camp and learn proper technique from the coaches. It really helped me get an edge over the competition. Camp Director Reynard Carrie will be joined by other former professional football players such as former Dallas Cowboys/(CFL)BC Lions linebacker Mawuko Tugbenyoh; former Eastern Oregon and Portland State safeties coach Nick Chenault; former Cornell University defensive lineman Jesse Rodriguez; University of Oregon defensive back Charles Favroth; and national strength and conditioning coach Jim Garcia. Self-care isn’t selfish by Beth Witrogen Correspondent We are often so busy taking care of others – family, friends, co-workers, etc. – that we lose ourselves in the process. When we forget to care for ourselves, the quality of what we do in the world suffers. Especially for family caregivers, the adult child seems to be the one who becomes the most exhausted and frustrated in his or her attempts to maintain a “normal” life balance. It can be hard to accept that selfcare is not the same as being selfish. If you care for yourself to the exclusion of everyone around you, then yes, that is narcissistic. But if you include yourself in the caring equation, you not only are able to give to others from a healthy foundation, but the joy in your care will be much greater. Here are tips for self-care, no matter what your state of health is at the moment: • Believe that optimum wellness is possible, and that your body has the inner guidance system to make it so. • Listen to your body’s symptoms and pay attention to its messages about health and healing. Its inner wisdom will guide you to greater wellness.

• Work with what you have today and let tomorrow take care of itself. Say to yourself, “The energy of life is enough to dispel my fears and to give me strength to handle today.” The more you seek balance, the more balanced you will become. Remember: Energy follows thought. • Understand that if you don’t value yourself, you have little to give; then you will burn out. • Realize that you don’t have to be all things to all people. You can say no and set limits without putting others out of your heart. • If you are caring for an aging loved one, learn to accept and ask for help, especially from family, friends and community resources. For example, if siblings aren’t pitching in, facilitate a family meeting and talk about how to delegate tasks. • Remember that you have a right to your own life. Giving your all doesn’t mean giving up your own health and well-being. • If you find yourself tired, angry or resentful at the end of the day, ask yourself what thoughts, actions or interactions drained you. Develop a meditation or self-reflection practice to let them go. • Don’t worry about what society, other family members, friends and colleagues

think of you or how you are doing. Consider that your best is good enough; no one else has the right to judge you or make you feel guilty. • Keep a positive attitude and accept each day’s offerings. Then let everything go at the end of the day. • Stop trying to control people and events or expecting certain results. Life happens on its own. • Pay attention to the people and activities that nurture your life energy. Commit to more of these interactions. • Make a list of tasks and prioritize them according to what is important for you to be personally involved in and what you can delegate. • Learn to ask for help; it is actually selfish not to let others give to you. • Learn to say “no” to things you used to say “yes” to in order to protect your time and energy. Set reasonable expectations: Don’t try to be all things to all people; it is not your responsibility to make others happy or to live their lives for them. Healthy diet is food for the eyes by Charlyn Fargo Registered Dietitian A recent eye exam (and my first eyeglasses) prompted me to do some research on the connection between diet and eye health. Like an apple that turns brown when it’s cut open, the lens of the eye gets brown as we age, writes Allen Taylor, director of the Laboratory for Nutrition and Vision Research at Tufts’ Jean Mayer USDA Human Nutrition. The browning is a result of oxidation, and in terms of our diet, the oxidation of carbohydrates. Aging eyes can lead to cataracts and age-related macular degeneration (AMD), conditions Taylor expects to see as more baby-boomers age. In a Nurses Health Study of 500 women 53 to 73 years of age, Taylor and colleagues found that women who consumed diets with a high glycemic index had a greater risk of developing signs of early AMD than those with a lower glycemic index diet. The glycemic index measures how rapidly the body converts food to sugar. High glycemic index foods like white bread or potatoes are considered lower-quality carbohydrate sources than foods like lentils, yams or whole grains. The National Eye Institute’s Age-Related Eye Disease Study of 4,099 non-diabetic participants found that 20 percent of AMD cases would have been prevented by a low glycemic diet. According to Taylor, shifting your diet from the top half of the glycemic-index scale to the bottom half is as simple as switching from five slices of white bread per day to five slices of whole wheat bread per day. Such small changes can reduce the risk of AMD and delay the progress of AMD in patients who already have it.

Now, you’ve really had it. You try the chiropractor and either you feel better for a little while only to have the pain return, or worse, nothing happens at all. Or even worse than that, after your treatment you have MORE pain (not because chiropractic does not work, your condition is just too deteriorated or severe). Then you try acupuncture because you read in a magazine it could help pain. You then realize sticking a bunch of needles in you will not magically remove the bulging disc that is smashing your nerve and causing you pain. You try massage as you read on the internet massage may help alleviate back pain… only to be disappointed. You’re now beginning to feel desperate. Back to your primary care doctor to tell him about your adventures hoping he will have a different answer this time. He does. “We can inject pain drugs through a big needle into your spine”. You cringe in fear and reluctantly agree at this point. “NOW I will be fixed”. Or at least that’s what you’ve been led to believe. Armida Viramontes Castro Former Brentwood resident Armida Viramontes Castro entered the gates of heaven on Jan. 16. She was born on Oct. 31, 1936 in Los Angeles and was preceded in death by son Robert Paul and daughter Lori Jean. Armida was a devoted wife of 53 years to her loving husband, Manuel (Manny). She was a caring mother to son James (Madaline) and proud grandmother to the light of her life, grandson Roman. Armida is also survived by her sisters, Helen Torres, Delfina Vega, Lucia Viramontes; and brothers, Tom, David and Paul Viramontes; as well as countless nieces and nephews. Armida was a hairstylist for over 30 years but enjoyed spending most of her time with her husband, family, friends and cherished grandson. She had a creative
