ith just over 30 shopping days left until Christmas – yep, it’s true – coming
up with some last-minute cash is easier than you think. All it takes are a few simple adjustments to your pocketbook – and your mindset – to grab some great deals, stay on budget and still enjoy the holidays. Here’s how.
Trim the trimmings
Not one of my favorites cost-saving tricks – I love the aroma of a real tree – but artificial Christmas trees are definitely cheaper than live, especially in the long run. Spend $100 every year on that perfect, needle-strewn and eventually dried-out real deal, or $100 on a fake noble fir that you can use for many years.
Whether it’s a stash of unused gold and silver items, or a broken gerbil cage (I know someone who actually sold one for $30), there’s no time like the present to see what your unused items might generate in quick cash. We all know about Craigslist, but there are plenty of other online sites to choose from. Do a search online for the item you want to sell and see what pops up.

Purge your pantry
Admit it, we all have items tucked away in the back of our cupboards and pantries that have, shall we say, been there awhile and now’s the time to use them. Get creative and see what delicious dishes you can concoct from a can of white beans or a bag of rice. Add a few fresh ingredients and you’ve got dinner. Try this culinary adventure for a few weeks, and you’ll save some serious bank at the grocery story.
Make a list avoiding plastic during the holidays are high-interest rates and controlled spending. Not only will you avoid exorbitant fees if you forsake the credit cards, you’ll most likely spend less by carrying cash, because when the green is gone the shopping’s done – game over.
Cut the landlines
And maybe the cable cord, too. Let’s face it, most of us use our cell phones 99 percent of the time, so getting rid of your “home phone” seems like a slamdunk that could save as much as $500 a year. And while you’re at it, look at your cable bill. Do you really need all 450-plus channels? Dumping your landline and trimming your cable contract could net you an extra hundred dollars or so in time for the holidays. And once the season is over, you can use that extra money on a Netflix subscription or a few hundred trips to Redbox.
And check it twice. While the importance of making a gift list and sticking to it seems obvious, it’s easy to let logic fly out the window as the shopping days grow short and the lists remain long. So before you head out the door to the mall, draw up a gift list, choose a price range, and stick to it. You’ll come home a lot faster, more successful and infinitely less stressed.

OK, sales are everywhere this time of year, but how do you know if you’re getting a truly good deal? Do your homework. The only way to know if an item is priced low is to know what the other guys are selling it for. So before you click, sign or hand over the cash for that flat screen or laptop, shop around. ou’ve heard the carols in the department stores, you’ve seen the pop-up ads on
your computer, and you’ve been feeling the hole in your pocket start to burn as the promises of great holiday savings flash on your TV. With the holidays comes holiday shopping, and the countdown has begun. But some gifts cost nothing at all and are worth far more than the latest and greatest gizmo or whatchamacallit. This year, instead of giving gifts wrapped in colorful paper and bright ribbons, give a gift from the heart and volunteer in your community. There are dozens of organizations that could use a helping hand this holiday season to make sure that everyone has a happy Christmas, Kwanza, Hanukkah and every holiday in between.

Raider fan extraordinaire Gorilla Rilla donated some time to the Salvation Army earlier this month, serving as a volunteer bell ringer. The Antioch Corps of the SA is looking for more people to help staff its familiar red kettles this year. If you want to get started right away and not wait till December to get your hands dirty, Willy’s Bagels and Blends – in conjunction with Crossroads Community Church – hosts the inaugural Street Feast on Thanksgiving Day, offering free meals to anyone who stops by

Here’s a list of other organizations you and your family can help out this season: Antioch Salvation Army The jingle of the Salvation Army holiday bell is unmistakable, and now you, too, can don a Salvation Army cap and raise money to help the organization continue its efforts to help families in need through programs that provide shelter, food and clothes. The Salvation Army will be stationed at 19 locations in East County this season, and volunteers are asked to participate for only four hours at a time. Friendly Visitors Make a senior citizen’s day by signing up for the Friendly Visitors Program, a countywide institution that pairs volunteers with seniors in need of company. Volunteers are paired with an elderly East County resident and they meet once a week to talk and hang out. Volunteers may also assist with small tasks such as taking their senior to the grocery store or helping change a light bulb. No task is too small to help a senior in need of a friend. HOLIDAY GIFT GUIDE Project Linus The local chapter of this national charity meets at Delta Community Presbyterian Church in Discovery Bay on the first Saturday of the month. Volunteers gather to make handmade blankets that are donated to fire stations and hospitals so that when children find themselves in a crisis, a warm and cuddly blanket is there to offer comfort. You don’t need to be a skilled tailor to help. Email Chapter President Jeanne Akin at jakin@ pacbell.net and she’ll tell you how easy it is to make a difference in a child’s life. Brentwood Regional Community Chest Help a family in Brentwood, Discovery Bay, Byron or Knightsen celebrate the holidays in style. The BRCC hosts its annual Christmas Basket Program, a charity effort in effect for more than 30 years, on Dec. 17 and 18. Volunteers are needed to collect donated food and toys as well as sort through the thousands of donated items prior to pickup day. People are also needed to help the pickup event run smoothly and handle cleanup afterward. For more information, call Rick at 925-634-1441. Friends of Oakley Like the BRCC, Oakley operates its own Christmas Basket Program, now in its third year. Volunteers are needed to wrap gifts, sort and box donated food items and assist with the distribution event. Sorting and bagging are scheduled for Dec. 18; pickup on the 19th. NOVEMBER 19, 2010 lighter on the checkbook; homemade gifts can be more special to the recipient. “Why do I scrapbook?” asked Patti Snyder, co-manager of Brentwood scrapbooking store Art Inspired Studios. “It’s about capturing memories and preserving them for future generations, but it’s also an outlet for me to express my creativity and share what I love doing with others by creating something.” Discovery Bay resident Cathy Gomes said she’s made gifts such as decorated paper houses filled with candy, something the children in her family love. Gomes also enjoys making her own Christmas cards. Calendars featuring photos of family also make a nice gift. In Snyder’s calendars, each month is designed according to a theme and decorated with photos of fond times with family – instead of the conventional images of kittens or landscapes of faraway places. Gifters can personalize the calendars further by highlighting birthdays and anniversaries. Apply elbow grease and creativity, and there’s no limit to what can be made. Terri Kolte of Brentwood said one of the most well-received of her gifts was a set of ornaments displaying old black-andwhite photos from childhood. Scrapbooks commemorating their children’s achievements or other special moments are great gifts for parents. “They can be as complicated as if it took you months to put together with a ton of money,” Kolte said. This can also be a time to make

Every year, Gomes and other local scrapbookers make a 25 Days of Christmas book, in which they write down thoughts or special events that occur in the days leading up to Dec. 25. Some have also made a book that emphasizes everything they’re thankful for. For those short on the creative skills to pull off something elaborate, there are simple ways to make Christmas a little brighter. Snyder said there are myriad classes, magazines and websites where people can gather tips on how to make cherished presents from home and avoid the holiday rush. “I think people really appreciate that more,” Kolte said. Making gifts by hand can also be a social event, Snyder said, drawing friends and family together to share ideas and just chat. Children, whose arts and crafts projects at school give them experience in scrapbooking techniques and materials, can also get involved. Snyder said that decorating a paper gift bag with a simple handmade tag instead of expensive wrapping paper can enhance a gift’s presentation. When you devote your personal time to the making of a gift, rather than just grab it off a store shelf, the gift takes on greater meaning to the recipient. As Snyder put it, “Even a $5 homemade item – they don’t know how much you spent on it – looks like it’s a $30 item, because you took the time to create it.” To comment, visit www.thepress.net.

turkey-day dishes fill the house with nostalgic fragrances. One such classic is the Pumpkin Roll, bursting with spiced pumpkin flavor, a sweet, creamy filling – and major eye appeal. Libby’s Pumpkin Roll Cake ¼ cup powdered sugar (to sprinkle on towel) ¾ cup all-purpose flour ½ teaspoon baking powder ½ teaspoon baking soda ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon ½ teaspoon ground cloves ¼ teaspoon salt 3 large eggs 1 cup granulated sugar 2 /3 cup Libby’s 100% Pure Pumpkin 1 cup walnuts, chopped (optional) Filling 1 package (8 ounces) cream cheese, room temperature
1 cup powdered sugar, sifted 6 tablespoons butter or margarine, softened 1 teaspoon vanilla extract Powdered sugar (optional for decoration) For cake: Preheat oven to 375° F. Grease 15x10inch jelly roll pan; line with wax paper. Grease and flour paper. Sprinkle a thin, cotton kitchen towel with powdered sugar. Combine flour, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, cloves and salt in small bowl. Beat eggs and granulated sugar in large mixer bowl until thick. Beat in pumpkin. Stir in flour mixture. Spread evenly into prepared pan. Sprinkle with nuts. Bake for 13 to 15 minutes or until top of cake springs back when touched. (If using a dark-colored pan, begin checking for doneness at 11 minutes.) Immediately loosen and turn cake onto prepared towel. Carefully peel off paper. Roll up cake and towel together, starting with narrow end. Cool on wire rack. Makes 10 servings. For filling: Beat cream cheese, 1 cup powdered sugar, butter and vanilla extract in small mixer bowl until smooth. Carefully unroll cake. Spread cream cheese mixture over cake. Reroll cake. Wrap in plastic wrap and refrigerate at least one hour. Sprinkle with powdered sugar before serving, if desired. Tip: Be sure to put enough powdered sugar on the towel when rolling up the cake so it will not stick.
