HOLIDAY GUIDE

Vintage shopping at Christmas of Brentwood AMY SCHRADER

n their search for vintage ornaments and unique holiday

Christmas of Brentwood offers a variety of holiday decorations to make every home a winter wonderland.

gifts, connoisseurs hunt for

Christmas collectibles at garage sales, flea markets and online stores, which can often lead to incomplete sets and delicate items being damaged in the mail. Christmas of Brentwood is a yearround collectible and antique store that offers unique gifts and decorations perfect for holiday gift giving and decking out your home. “My grandma always made Christmas special and taught us how to bake and decorate for the holidays,” said Ed King, owner of Christmas of Brentwood. “It’s a very special holiday filled with so many family memories, and I wanted to share that tradition with the community.” Since 1996, King has been decorating his shop with holiday decorations, unique collectibles and the perfect gifts to put under the tree. The shop is filled with Christmas villages, giving visitors some holiday cheer and Christmas spirit whenever they visit. “It’s an awesome place to get

Christmas ornaments, and the owners are the nicest people,” said Brentwood resident Nanci Nunes. “We go every year to pick special ornaments and decorations.” Local residents return year after year, because Christmas of Brentwood offers specialty collector items and exceptional customer service. “We carry new and vintage Department 56 Villages, Snowbabies and Fontanini,” said King. Department 56 handcrafted villages are collectibles that can become family heirlooms, which glow and sparkle with

scenes of fresh fallen snow, nostalgic cozy homes and old-fashioned businesses. There are North Pole villages, city villages, New England villages, Disney villages, Downton Abbey, Dickens villages and more. Customers can customize their sets to create unique holiday scenes filled with characters, animals and dazzling details. “Some parents buy their kids a new piece each year for Christmas,” said King. “They make such meaningful and unique gifts.” Another collectable item featured at Christmas of Brentwood is made by the

Fontanini nativity makers, who have a tradition that dates back over 100 years in Italy. Fontanini specializes in handcrafted, hand-painted Italian nativity figures made by the fourth generation of the Fontanini family, whose work has become synonymous with Christmas throughout Italy. “Fontanini’s figures and ornaments represent the spirit of Christmas and have been collected for over 100 years,” said King. “They are very unique, nearly indestructible and loved by families all over the world.” Snowbabies are another special item perfect for decorating the tree or giving as a gift. The hand-sculpted and hand-painted porcelain figures depict children and babies capturing the magic of Christmas. Each year, new figures are added to the collection, creating a lifetime of memories. Whether you are gift-giving or shopping for your own home, there is plenty to choose from at Christmas of Brentwood. “We are always ready to give some pointers to people who are just starting their village collections or looking for the perfect gift,” said King. Christmas of Brentwood is located at 8425 Brentwood Blvd. For more information, call 925-634-7977. To comment, visit www.thepress.net.

A home away from home for the holidays AMY SCHRADER

T

is the season to deck the halls, hang tinsel on the tree and get ready for out-of-

town guests, which brings the ultimate holiday debate of whether you should have your guests stay in your home or at a nearby hotel. While some enjoy spending time with family in close quarters, others don’t prefer air mattresses in their living room and choose the convenience of local accommodations. The Best Western Plus Delta Inn & Suites in Oakley has rooms to fit any size family, including their pets (dogs up to 80 pounds). The hotel also decorates for the holidays, making it the perfect getaway for out-of-town guests. “We offer your guests a comfortable place to stay, so they’re not sleeping on the couch,” said Sandra Espinosa, Best Western Plus Delta Inn & Suites manager. “Plus, we make sure every guest feels welcomed when they walk into our lobby, which is decked out for the holidays and has complimentary hot chocolate, coffee and tea and fresh baked warm cookies Monday through Saturday nights.” According to Espinosa, many people are familiar with Best Western hotels, but Best Western Plus hotels offer extra amenities per location. “Our rooms are much larger than standard hotel rooms and have features that make you feel at home, including free Wi-Fi, a 37-inch flat-screen TV, refrigerator, microwave, coffee maker, and we also have suites with Whirlpool bathtubs and pull-out couches,” she said. For those traveling with pets, the hotel offers pet-friendly rooms with hardwood floors on the first floor for easy access to the designated outdoor pet

HOLIDAY GUIDE

A unique spin on holiday gift-giving LAUREN HUFFMASTER

A

s the holidays approach, finding unique gifts for loved ones takes center

stage.

This year a new local pottery shop, The Mad Potters, will offer unique options for your gifting needs. New to Brentwood, this studio provides educational opportunities in the art of ceramics and offers classes in throwing on the wheel, glass art, greenware and bisqueware. Each class will provide individual instruction allowing students multiple sessions as they take clay and turn it into a colorful, one of a kind, masterpiece. In addition to classes, customers can visit The Mad Potters to paint a premade ceramic piece, with items starting as low as $10. Co-owner Charmaine Abasolo remembers painting ceramics as a child. Her memories of working with ceramics inspired her to create a simple, no-hassle studio that encourages families to feel at home. “When I was a child, I was able to leave my piece at the studio, and I could take my time and continue to come back

You can’t find a store where you can take your time without paying extra fees.” In order to ensure families never feel rushed, The Mad Potters does not charge additional fees to the ceramics experience. much time as needed to complete a piece, and there is never a sitting fee. The Mad Potters also offers special events packages. Alison Rost, recently hosted her 11 year old’s birthday party at the studio. “My family had never done ceramics before, but we will definitely go back,” said Rost. “The instructors were very

patient with the children and the adults.” Jerry Illers, an instructor at the studio, brings more than 50 years of experience in creating ceramic art. At the heart of his expertise is a desire to educate the next generation of ceramic artists. “Our passion, is teaching,” Illers said. “I want to provide one-on-one instruction so each individual gets the attention he or she needs.” In order to encourage youth to learn, the studio will provide special classes for homeschool children, Boy and Girl Scouts, and children with special needs. The Mad Potters has something for everyone. Even if you are not interested in creating your own piece, The Mad Potters has a gallery displaying pottery available for purchase. The gallery exhibits original pieces handmade by Illers. A one of a kind, locally crafted, piece of art will be a holiday present that is remembered for years to come. Join The Mad Potters for a free grand opening event on Saturday, Nov. 4, from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. The event will include refreshments, demonstrations and a free 4x4 tile to paint. The studio is located at 629 First St., in Brentwood. For more information, call 925-6426865, or visit www.facebook.com/ madpottersinBrentwood. To comment, visit www.thepress.net.

Holidays from page 3B One of the hotel’s most popular features is the free breakfast. “Our hotel is ready to start your morning with a complimentary full hot breakfast, serving hot eggs, breakfast meat, a variety of fresh fruit, cereal, waffles, yogurts and much more,” said Espinosa. “We have so many local residents tell us that they love having their family stay here, because they don’t have to worry about making everyone breakfast in the morning.” With so many amenities and their convenient location, the Best Western Plus Delta Inn & Suites is becoming a holiday tradition for out-of-town guests. “We love having our family stay at the Best Western,” said Oakley resident Jennifer Albaugh. “Having family squish in our house during the holidays was so hectic, stressful and exhausting. Having them stay close to home frees up some space in our house and gives us a little break so we can actually enjoy their visit even more.” The Best Western Plus Delta Inn &

PETS

Pet-sitting for reptiles According to the American Pet Products Association, 4.7 million U.S. households own reptiles. Although reptiles have not achieved the same popularity or acceptance as other pets, such as dogs, cats or fish, their owners still need quality pet-care options when work or leisure keep them from home. Pet Sitters International (PSI), the world’s largest educational association for professional pet sitters, advises reptile owners – and all pet owners – to do their research and only use the services of professional pet sitters for their pet-care needs. “Often times, pet owners and even news outlets use the term ‘pet sitter’ carelessly, referring to anyone – from a family friend to the neighborhood teenager asked to check in on your pet – as a ‘pet sitter,’” explained Patti J. Moran, PSI president. “It is important that pet owners understand pet sitting is a professional career, and professional pet sitters offer peace of mind that other pet-care options cannot.” While pet owners may think to call a pet sitter to offer dog walks or cat care while they are away from home, there are also

options available for those who, instead, need someone to feed a mouse to their ball pythons. The number of professional pet sitters offering services to reptiles is growing. PSI has more than 6,000 member businesses in the United States, Canada and abroad, and according to PSI’s 2016 State of the Industry Survey, nearly 40 percent of its members offer pet-sitting services for reptiles and amphibians. Additionally, PSI advises all pet owners to ask these important questions when interviewing a potential pet sitter: 1. Does the pet sitter have the proper business license for your city or state, if required? 2. Is the pet sitter insured and bonded? 3. Can the pet sitter provide proof of clear criminal history? 4. Does the pet sitter provide client references? 5. Will the pet sitter use a pet-sitting services agreement or contract? 6. Is the pet sitter a Certified Professional Pet Sitter (CPPS) or have they participated in other pet-care training, such as pet first aid? To learn more about PSI, visit www. petsit.com.
