DISCOVERY BAY COMMUNITY Town of Discovery Bay CONTINUES TO CONSERVE WATER The Town of Discovery Bay Board of Directors Meets at 7:00 p.m. on the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of each month at the Discovery Bay Community Center 1601 Discovery Bay Blvd. Phone: (925) 392-4575 DISTRICT OFFICE 1800 Willow Lake Rd. The numbers are in and the Discovery Bay community deserves a round of applause for continuing to conserve our water. The water conservation is measured each month and the results are monitored by the State. From June of 2015 through February of 2016, the community met the 32 percent water reduction standard.

Thank You!

Discovery Bay Conservation Summary • June 2015 through January 2016 — 36.2% conservation, exceeding 32% conservation goal. • January conservation was 26.4% measurably better than the region but below the standard. • February conservation was 35.1%. Although the snowpack water content readings were more positive this year

than in the previous four years, they were still below the historic average. As such, continued efforts to conserve water throughout the State are important.

In compliance with the State’s Emergency Water Regulations the Town adopted Ordinance No. 25 which includes the following: • The application of potable water to driveways and sidewalks is prohibited. • Watering in a manner that results in runoff is prohibited. • The use of water in fountains or other decorative features is only allowed if part of a recirculating system. • The use of a hose that dispenses Continued on page 14

Water Meter Installation Update The State of California law requires that all homes in our community have water meters installed. Approximately one third of the homes in Discovery Bay have water meters installed on their property. Those homes that are fitted with water meters pay for actual use on an annual rate established rather than paying based on the average residential consumption. Currently the water meter and automated reader system project is in the planning

stages and it is expected that the installation will begin in the fall of 2016 for the remainder of homes not currently metered. This new system will allow you to monitor water use on any computer or mobile device, from anywhere in the world. Those that conserve water or otherwise use less will see this reflected on their water bill. Watch for upcoming updates and check the Town’s website at www.todb.ca.gov for more information.

Pipeline

Continued from page 2 potable water to wash a motor vehicle except where the hose is fitted with a shut-off nozzle or device attached to it that causes it to cease dispensing water immediately when not in use. • Outdoor watering is restricted to two days each week. • Dwellings or establishments with even numbered street addresses may use outdoor water before 1 p.m. and after 7 p.m. on Tuesdays and Saturdays only. • Dwellings or establishments with odd numbered street addresses may use outdoor water before 1 p.m. and after 7 p.m. on Wednesdays and Sundays only.

• The State’s Regulations also prohibits the application of potable water to outdoor landscapes during and within 48 hours after measurable rainfall. • The community deserves much credit for stepping up to the plate and being one of the approximately 58 percent of communities within the state that have achieved the water conservation standard. For more information on the drought and water restrictions in Discovery Bay, please visit our website at www.todb.ca.gov and click on the Drought link and visit www.saveourwater. com for more water saving tips.

Water-saving ideas • Choose a water-efficient irrigation system such as drip irrigation for your trees, shrubs, and flowers. Remember to turn it off when it rains. Save: 15 gallons/each time you water

• Use a broom to clean driveways, sidewalks and patios. Save: 8-18 gallons /minute.

• Plant drought-resistant trees and plants. Save: 30- 60 gallons/each time you water/1,000 sq. ft.

• Put a layer of mulch around trees and plants to reduce evaporation and keep the soil cool. Organic mulch also improves the soil and pre-vents weeds. Save: 20-30 gallons/each time you water/1,000 sq. ft.

• Wash cars/boats with a bucket, sponge, and hose with self-closing nozzle. Save: 8-18 gallons/minute.

Pipeline Employee Spotlight

A Safety Message from our Contra Costa County Public Works Department During routine inspections, the Contra Costa Public Works Department noticed several basketball hoops on the sidewalks or on the pavement in the gutter. Not only does this present tripping, parking, and vehicle hazards, but it could also divert drainage during winter storms. In order to allow clearances for safe passage of pedestrians and vehicles, and to allow adequate parking and drainage, the Public Works Department would like to remind you that these are public right of ways. Please store your equipment behind the back edge of the side walk and allow 7’ minimum clearance over the sidewalk.

Meet Monica Rollins As you walk into the Town of Discovery Bay Community Center you’ll most likely be greeted by Monica Rollins. Monica has mastered the various aspects of the day-to-day activities of the Community Center.

We would appreciate your help with this issue. Any questions, please call the Contra Costa Public Works Department at (925) 313-7012.

Please Pick Up After Your Pet It doesn’t take much to remember that we have pets in our community. In fact, if you don’t watch your step, you’re liable to step in one such reminder!

Next time you’re in the area be sure to stop in to say hello to Monica!

By taking a few simple steps to clean up after your pet, you can contribute not only to the beautification of our community, but also towards the elimination of one of the most irritating nuisances in our community. Thank you for your cooperation!

DRIVE SAFE

When walking your dogs in our parks please remember that they must be leashed. The Town of Discovery Bay does have an off-leash dog park located at the Community Center, 1601 Discovery Bay Blvd. Also, it is important to remember to immediately clean up after your pet. Take a baggie along with you to pick up waste and then dispose of it properly.

Besides being unsightly and smelly, animal waste can be hazardous to the health of our children who play in the community, and other pets. One of the most common forms of disease transmission between dogs is through fecal matter.

Regatta Park • Replacement of picnic tables • Replacement of park benches • Installation of new recycle and trash receptacles • Replacement of fencing and backstop at the ball field • Added new dog stations

Slifer Park • • • •
