POE DRIVE PROJECT New Enhancement Point of Timber & Poe Drive The Landscape Department is working through a new enhancement at the entrance to Ravenswood at the corner of Point of Timber and Poe Drive. The reason we have committed to this project is in large part due to the fact that we need to become more environmentally prudent by reducing irrigated nonpark areas, reducing long term maintenance costs, and creating a unifying landscape theme for the Town of Discovery Bay. Discovery Bay is unique in that its background is water, levees, and agriculture. The unifying theme should incorporate this vernacular. There are ways to add these forms into the new landscape. For instance, one could mimic a flowing river system using a “dry riverbed” with decorative rock. Other forms to consider would be to add plantings that are less grouped and more spaced out and in formation such as an agricultural planted field. Each new streetscape will contain most, if not all, of these new concepts. In terms of plants, we are developing a plant palette that consists of drought tolerant, low maintenance trees, shrubs, and perennials. We will also be incorporating native plant material into the overall palette. New landscapes will incorporate more rock mulch to reduce long term maintenance costs. We will also be slowly incorporating drip irrigation into these sites as another water wise measure.
