Oakley's Big Break Regional Shoreline brought home numerous first-place awards in The Press’ Best of Oakley readers poll.

Big Break Regional Shoreline strikes gold in readers poll Oakley’s Big Break Regional Shoreline, voted “best place to show a visitor”, “best place to walk a dog” and “best view in town” in The Press’ Best of Oakley readers poll, honors the Delta’s importance to California while also being home to a variety of wildlife and outdoor activities for everyone. After being closed for a year because of COVID-19, Big Break Regional Shoreline has finally returned to its prepandemic operating hours. Workers at the visitor center are excited to welcome people back. “I love our visitor center, because all of the educational materials are there,” said Pia Loft, supervising naturalist at Big Break. “You can come for a scheduled program, but even if you come just to visit, we always have somebody on site during open hours to explain why the

Delta matters, why wetlands matter and how to explore on your own.” Along with the visitor center, the park boasts trails and fishing spots. Though fishing at Big Break is open 24 hours, a fishing permit is required for anglers 16 and older, and everyone must abide by the California Department of Fish and Game regulations. The park also offers fishing programs for beginners. Big Break is full of diverse flora and fauna, and many visitors get to see traces of the wildlife on the park’s trails. “The Levy Talk Trail is one of my favorites because that’s where you’re likely to run into animals,” Loft said. “You can see the interactions between all these different animals, and I think that’s pretty magical. Sometimes we see a really big gopher snake on the trail, or nice little baby turkeys, depending on the time of year.”

The park is also focusing on its educational programs and its work with schools. The visitor center is aligned with the Next Generation Science Standards, enabling students and children to learn about the science associated with the park. “We also have our lab, built with teachers and students in mind. We surveyed a bunch of teachers about the type of space they needed in the visitor center. And they said, ‘We just really want a space where our kids can get dirty, because a lot of schools don’t have that.’ So our lab is a space where everyone can get dirty,” naturalist Melissa Folks said. Press readers' poll recognizes Grocery Outlet for community service Oakley’s Grocery Outlet has been voted the city’s “most community-minded” business in The Press’ Best of Oakley poll. The store, owned by Oakley residents David and Jessalynn Greenblatt, opened in 2015 and participates in the parent company’s annual Independence from Hunger Food Drive each July. “This is our annual food drive, which is the entire month of July,” said Jessalynn. “All donations stay in our local community. We have nine food partners we have identified over the years . . . This year we raised $20,418 worth of groceries for the community.” The Greenblatts work with local organizations like Friends of Oakley, St. Vincent de Paul, Delta Christian Community Pantry and the Senior Center to get the donated groceries into the community. Jessalynn said besides reaching out to larger organizations, they also work with small ministries in local churches to help feed families in need. “It’s been going up every year,” said David. “Last year, we did just over $17,000, and our first year started around $2,000, so it goes up and up every single year. And it’s something that our cashiers get behind every year because they know how important it is to us to give back to the community.” Their July food drive is not the only time the Greenblatts use their store to reach out to the community. They continue to work with their food partners outside of the food drive, willing to fulfill needs and stay involved throughout the year. And they are happy to support local youth.

“We also love to be involved in East County Little League,” said Jessalynn. “And the schools, we are always happy to donate toward causes people ask for. We have a heart for the kids in our community in general and want to do our part to make Oakley great because we think it is great.” David said their goal has always been to be part of the community. "I joined the Rotarty Club of Oakley to help, and continue to give back to the city of Oakley, with its tight-knit community and small-town feel. It has been a blessing," David said. During their July food drive, customers have the choice to purchase a pre-made bag of groceries, donate a specified amount of money, or round up their purchase to the next dollar and donate the change. Jessalyn said her customers were aware of the increased need during the past two years because of the COVID-19 pandemic and stepped up to meet the need. “We are just so thankful the community recognized us as being focused on giving back to the community because it’s hugely important to us and a passion close to our hearts,” said Jessalynn. “It feels good, but we recognize that we don’t do it alone and it’s been great to see the cooperation of our employees and the organizations we work with and of course our customers, who say ‘yes’ every time they donate and choose to shop at our store.” Grocery Outlet is at 3110 Main St. in Oakley. The Rotary Club of Oakley helped install water conservation kits to those in need of assistance.

Oakley Rotary remains a standout community nonprofit Oakley’s Rotary Club takes pride in its community service, and the work doesn’t go unnoticed by area residents. The Rotary Club of Oakley won best nonprofit again in The Press’ Best of Oakley voting. “It’s exciting that the community acknowledges the service we are trying to provide for the community,” said Hugh Henderson, the club’s president. The local club, part of a global network of 1.2 million neighbors, friends, leaders and problemsolvers who believe they have a shared responsibility to take action on the world’s most persistent issues, has grown to 28 members since chartering in 2019. The club, which launched with 20 members, is hopeful it can grow to between 35 and 40. Service is the club’s core mission, and the club’s dedication is evident in its activities. A handful of the organization’s ongoing and completed projects include: • Landscaping the city’s Senior Center in the fall last year. • Assisting with the center’s food giveaway. • Aiding in the Friends of Oakley holiday meal and toy giveaway.

• Adopting Main Street, between Bridgehead Road and Big Break Road — cleaning up the stretch of roadway four times a year. On one Saturday in late September, members helped out at the Heart of Oakley Festival immediately after completing home maintenance tasks for elderly residents. If members get burned out by the activities, they don’t show it. “I’m having a blast,” said Henderson. “Rotary has definitely filled a void I had for giving back to the community.” Among its major future activities, the club is planning a community-chartered dinner in May and a spring kite festival, also around that time. “The money we fundraise goes right back into the community,” Henderson said. The club meets weekly on Thursdays at 7:30 a.m. at Black Bear Diner, 3201 Main St., in Oakley. Prospective members are encouraged to attend one of the meetings. BEST NEWS A pair of positive developments on the COVID-19 front drew attention for best news of the year. Voters lauded the arrival of the COVID-19 vaccines in addition to the state’s reopening from the pandemic. The first batch of vaccines arrived in mid-December of 2020, and the state subsequently fully reopened the economy the following June.

COVID-19 HEROES Amid the pandemic, many residents and businesses stepped up to help the community. But East County residents Bob Butler and Kelly Petrosh Clark, in addition to the Grocery Outlet business, stood out for all the right reasons, according to readers. Butler volunteered his time to shop for families who had difficulty getting out, while Petrosh Clark, a nurse, also received recognition from the community. The Oakley Grocery Outlet, owned by city residents David and Jessalynn Greenblatt, donated groceries and worked with a number of organizations, including Friends of Oakley, St. Vincent de Paul, Delta Christian Community Pantry and the Senior Center to get donated groceries into the community.
