Big Break Regional Shoreline Takes Top Honors With Residents, Guests Oakley has shown its appreciation of its regional parks by voting Big Break Regional Shoreline as its favorite in three categories in The Press’s Best of Oakley (BOO) for 2020. Big Break stole the show, taking first place in best park, best place to show a visitor and best place to walk a dog. “We always want to be the best park,” said supervising naturalist Mike Moran. “We are stewarding taxpayer resources and we take the responsibility of providing a great parks system in gratitude of that support. That’s what we are in business for.” Big Break is part of the East Bay Regional Parks (EBRP) system which provides parks throughout Alameda and Contra Costa counties. Moran noted Big Break was the organization’s first foray into the Delta area of East County and is set apart by its variety of neighbors – a housing development, an industrial yard and a marina. When a park design was being created, community input was a key factor

for the landscape architects. “Creating Big Break Regional Shoreline and Visitor Center was a true community effort to establish an educational center for learning about the delta, expand access to the delta for recreation, and preserve natural habitat for endangered and protected species,” said East Bay Regional Park District Board Member Colin Coffey. “The Big Break Regional Shoreline and Visitor Center on the Delta are great amenities for the Oakley community and entire East County area.” Moran said he and his fellow naturalists treat visitors to the center as they would a visitor to their own home, welcoming them and showing off the opportunities available at the park. Currently, the visitor center is closed due to COVID-19 restrictions, but the park is open. Though some parks in the EBRP system do allow dogs off-leash, they must remain leashed when walked at Big Break. Moran said park operators are aware of how

much visitors love their four-legged friends and he’s glad the community is utilizing the park for dog walks. “We think of ourselves as more of a community center rather than a classic visitor or nature center, and our hope is we are always providing the pub what they want in a park,” he added. “We understand that folks really love their dogs and want to bring them out and enjoy the great outdoors. So to hear that we are a great place to walk dogs, we are really happy about that.” Moran added he is grateful for the public’s support and hopes they will come out soon to enjoy the view. “On a clear day, you can see across the state to the Sierra Nevada,” he said. “It’s really hard to beat if you want to get a flavor of what the Delta is – this is a good view.” Big Break Regional Shoreline is located at 69 Big Break Road in Oakley. Rotary Club of Oakley Hits One-Year Mark Founded one year ago, Oakley’s Rotary Club has already received community recognition as recipients of this year’s Best of Oakley – Best Nonprofit award. “Isn’t this awesome?” the club’s president, Vera Martinez asked. “We are new; we are only a year old, so we are so excited. We are over the moon about it.” Martinez and her fellow club members have been hard at work since their charter became official last fall. They participate in food collection and distribution to the needy, a dictionary drive that supplies dictionaries to all third-grade students in the city’s school district and a monthly activity called Rotary Home Team. “Rotary Home Team is where we go to seniors’ houses,” said Tiffani Hom. “They can fill out a request form for us to change a lightbulb or clean some gutters, and we do that once a month on a Saturday.” Martinez and Hom have both been members since the group’s inception last year. Hom serves as public relations chair and said she is enjoying her first Rotary experience. “It’s been so great,” Hom

said of the past year. “We did some cleanups at Big Break where we pulled weeds and picked up trash — did some beautification. We’ve also done projects where we removed some fruit from trees for local seniors and donated the fruit to the Oakley Senior Center.” The Oakley Senior Center (OSC) is where the Rotary club has centered its food distribution efforts on Fridays. Hom noted several members are there each week, directing traffic, bagging food and handing it out those in need. Hom noted the group has 28 active members who are eager to serve their local community. Despite the pandemic, the Rotary Club of Oakley is staying active and looking for creative ways to continue to raise funds to support its activities. “We are super grateful to be recognized as best nonprofit, and we really enjoy contributing to the community in all the different ways we can, trying to fill whatever need is there,” said Hom.
