Dune restoration effort underway at Big Break Regional Shoreline A wedge-shaped piece of ground in the Big Break Regional Shoreline is a remnant of a dune system that once stretched all the way to the Mojave Desert, and an effort is underway to restore the dune to its natural state. The project, led by Brett Walsh, a Citizen Stewardship Project intern, began with a series of events called Dune Day. Volunteers and park staff gathered over the summer to help weed the area for fall planting of native vegetation like evening primrose, datura, spike weed, California croton, lupin and buckwheat. “Once we finish getting all the weeds out this summer, we’re going to look to different sources for new seed and hopefully collect seed around the park and try to re-establish the dune with native seeds,” Walsh said. “The end goal for this is to create a space where we can have both some habitat restoration and some community stewardship – pride in the park.”
The sand dunes community plant plot is the brainchild of the late Chris Thayer, botanist and Oakley dune enthusiast. With the help of local schools, volunteers and retired park district employees, the project is well on its way to becoming a signature spot for highlighting Oakley’s natural heritage. “The dune is not a mounded dune for a few reasons – one of them being that we don’t want sand blowing into the neighbors’ houses and making the next dune inside someone’s backyard,” explained Walsh. “If this plant community takes off and becomes healthy, which is what we’d like to see, then we can start looking at other places in our park to expand it.” The dune system was created at the end of the last ice age when deposits of glacial sand washed down the western slope of the Sierras into the drainages and built up along the shores of rivers like the San Joaquin. Some of the tallest dunes

in the system existed along a two-mile stretch between Oakley and Antioch and stood more than 120-feet tall. “Over times, some of them were eroded back into the river,” said Walsh. “People started quarrying sand out of them. Silica sand is really good for making glass and brick. A lot of the Antioch and Oakley dunes were used for making bricks to rebuild after the 1906 San Francisco earthquake.” A 646-acre property, purchased by the East Bay Regional Park District from the Nunn family in 2015, holds another fragment of the ancient dune system. Known as the Delta Access Nunn Property, it is located near the intersection of Byron Highway and Delta Road and is currently closed to the public. Restoration efforts there are in the very early stages. There are additional Dune Days at Big Break planned for later this summer and through the fall.

East County Little League and Furry Friends Pet Relief were voted Oakley’s Best Nonprofits. Both were recognized for enhancing life in Oakley for children, families and animals alike, the organizations are made up of tireless volunteers and a lot of heart.

Serving East County's youth, families and pets East County Little League (ECLL) teaches local youth T-ball, baseball, softball and the ideals of sportsmanship in the hopes that young people will become happy, healthy and upright citizens. The local little league, which has served Brentwood, Oakley, Discovery Bay, Knightsen, Byron and Bethel Island since 1989, has also been voted the best nonprofit organization in the City of Oakley. The reason it was chosen lies in the hundreds of volunteers and sponsors who come together to support the growth of local children and their community. “ECLL currently serves over 900 children and is entirely powered by volunteers and sponsors within our community,” said Chrystal Jost, ECLL board volunteer and treasurer. “ECLL is made up of the most amazing 250-plus volunteers, including managers, coaches, team parents, umpires and board members, which we would not be successful without.” Their volunteers are also very involved with community events.
“Over the years, ECLL not only promotes but actively participates in local community festivals, parades, car shows and charity events,” said Jost. “All of our ECLL families live, go to school and many work here in our community, and it is very, very important to all of us that we make a difference in the lives of the families through baseball and softball.” According to ECLL Vice President of Softball Tim Caruso, ECLL also strives to improve every year. “We are always looking for ways to improve from year to year and make ECLL a better overall experience for our players, parents, coaches and umpires,” said Caruso. “We are striving to put the best product out there. Imaginations Preschool recognized for its community roots Sometimes a school is more than just a place of learning. Schools can plant roots in communities through developing their students and supporting community efforts that lead to the growth of both the children and the world around them. Imaginations Preschool is an example of this. The home-based preschool, located in Oakley, was recognized as the best communityminded organization. “We are honored to receive this recognition,” said Marlene Howell, owner, director and lead teacher of Imaginations Preschool. “It is very important for our future to support our community, our youth and parents.” Students can attend the school from the time the have mastered walking (usually 18 months) to prekindergarten. The curriculum is not what you’d expect from a preschool. Rather than grouping
kids by ages, Howell’s team builds customized curriculum for each student, helping to transform them into leaders at a very young age. “Our school has one classroom for all kids,” said Howell. “My personal belief is that 2- to 3-year-olds learn from 4- to 5-year-olds, and 4- to 5-year-olds gain confidence by teaching younger kids.” Howell has often found that a 3-year-old may be capable of the same things as a 5-year-old. “If a child is capable of more, we don’t want to hold them back,” said Howell. The classroom is set up similar to a public-school classroom, and Howell works with different principals in the community to ensure her students learn the curriculum they need to be successful when they begin kindergarten. “Imaginations Preschool has helped my daughter so much and has prepared

her to be successful in kindergarten and in her future,” said Oakley resident Maria Flores. “Children there get oneon-one attention and the education that is needed for them to be ready for kindergarten.” Imaginations Preschool’s support for the community starts from within the school and spreads beyond the classroom. The preschool owner, who has a bachelor’s degree in early childhood education, teaches classes and workshops at Diablo Valley College. She also supports the Friends of Oakley and other community groups to offer education and support to ensure kids in the community have opportunities to grow and learn. Best of The Rest Not all of the Best of Oakley winners can be featured in the window of a business or showcased on an office wall. We like to call them The Best of the Rest, an outstanding group that complements this year’s winners and shines a special light on the city that is truly “A Place for Families in the Heart of the Delta.” BEST HISTORIC BUILDINGS Readers agreed that the beautifully restored and carefully appointed Renewed Life Church on the corner of Main Street and Live Oak Avenue is this year’s Best Historic Building. The renovated Victorian home has been repainted to reflect the color themes used for buildings in that time period between 1850 and 1900. Renewed Life Church is an independent, nondenominational church. The little brick building at 3530 Main St., was also popular with voters who named it the second best historic building in town. The 150-year-old structure will soon to be home to a new restaurant called Oakley Bistro Punahele Tonnelier. The new owners are working to incorporate the original integrity of the building into the new business.
BEST PARK IN TOWN Crockett Park. Home to the World of Discovery all-abilities playground, which draws families from all over East County, the popular park, located at 4150 Richards Way, is also home to tennis and basketball courts with something for everyone to enjoy.
BEST GOVERNMENT SPENDING Established in 1913 and one of the oldest libraries in Contra Costa County, voters gave the thumbs-up to the Oakley Library as the city’s best use of government spending. Located on the Freedom High School campus and operated in partnership with the school and the City of Oakley, the library is a favorite among residents for not only its selection of books but variety of reading and educational programs.
