On most days, visitors to Big Break Regional Shoreline are treated to a variety of wildlife and signs of nature as they stroll along the area’s 1,650 acres, which are part of the East Bay Regional Park District and a magnet for people of all ages and interests. Big Break is a natural setting for bird watching, or ‘birding,’ since dozens of species – including rails, kites, harriers, chats, herons, egrets and ibis – live and visit here. The area is also home to beavers and other wildlife. Whether a beginning ‘birder’ or an expert armed with binoculars and a well-thumbed guide to North American birds, Big Break is the quintessential place to view, listen to and appreciate the fascinating winged creatures that make this San Joaquin shoreline their home. But there are plenty of other reasons to visit Big Break Regional Shoreline Park. It provides access to the Delta shore, and there’s a fishing pier and an outdoor presentation pavilion that seats 150 and is centered on a stone fire pit. There’s also the Delta Science Center, a 5,000-square-foot facility with displays on

the history of the Delta and its wildlife, a community room and a science room where kids can conduct experiments. Don’t miss frequent hands-on happenings like Oakley Science Week, where kids get a chance to test water samples, make crafts and check out some of the animals that inhabit the area. The park’s center also showcases several species of other animals and is a popular school field-trip destination. With naturalists on hand, walking and bicycle trails, a fishing pier, kayak launch and an amphitheater, the park is a destination calling out to anyone who appreciates nature. The walkways are wide and flat and easily accommodate wheelchairs. The park also features a 1,200square-foot interactive map you can walk on and find your local hometown in the installation and outdoor movies in the summertime. involved in baseball, Relay for Life Oakley and the Oakley Chamber of Commerce and supports various local events, schools and charities. As a cancer survivor, being on the board for Relay for Life Oakley, is something that is very meaningful to April. “So many rallied around our family during my battle, so we like to give back,” she said. The Wirfels also work with the organization Kaleidoscope every Thanksgiving to make dinners for those in need. “They are so generous to the community and are always willing to give back,” said Kristin Mattingly, Oakley Chamber of Commerce treasurer.

Each pillar weighs over 3,000 pounds and are a symbol of the respect and admiration residents of Oakley hold for veterans as well as active service personnel. The representative columns bear the insignias of one of the five branches of the U.S. military: Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force and Coast Guard.

BEST NONPROFIT Readers agreed for the third year in a row that My Dog Rescue is the best nonprofit in town and the No. 1 source for rescue dogs and dog adoption. Helping puppies and dogs find their forever homes, My Dog Rescue is all about reducing the number of canines in shelters across the country.

BEST PARK IN TOWN This year’s Best Park in Town was a tie between Crockett Park and Creekside Park. Crockett Park is home to the World of Discovery all-abilities playground, which draws families from all over East County. Located at 4150 Richards Way, Crockett Park has large lush grass fields, picnic tables, benches and barbeques. The park also boasts tennis and basketball courts, so there is truly something for everyone to enjoy. Creekside Park is home to the Marsh Creek Restoration Project and walking paths that allow visitors to interact with the creek and enjoy the rehabilitated habitat. The park, located at 3900 Creekside Way, also has a BMX park, group picnic areas, a playground, water play features, a bocce ball court and a sports field.
