Antioch celebrates King’s 80th by Dave Roberts Staff Writer

It was billed as a birthday celebration for Martin Luther King Jr., who was born 80 years ago on Jan. 15, but Monday’s event in the packed El Campanil Theatre in Antioch was also a lively church service, a pro-Barack Obama political rally and a talent showcase. “Today is truly a momentous occasion as we partake in the first annual celebration of the life of Dr. Martin Luther King,” said City Councilman Reggie Moore to kick off the festivities. “I am so happy to be here to share this day with all of you on the eve of the inauguration of the first black president of the United States, Barack Obama. “It’s because of the work that Dr. King and others in the civil rights movement were able to accomplish to lay the foundation for all of us to come together to build (an) America that the whole world could look down upon and be proud of.” Moore, who is Antioch’s first AfricanAmerican councilman, was the guiding force behind the city’s first official celebration of King. While the event’s focus was on celebrating King’s life and legacy, God and Jesus were also celebrated in the invocation by Pastor Henry Kelly (“We believe, God, that this is the beginning of something great that’s going to continue in Jesus’ name”), in the gospel singing of the Antioch Church Family Chorus Voices (“Oh, Lord, How Excellent in Thy Name” and “Savior, Do Not Pass Me By”) and in the interpretative movements of

the shoulders of those heroes and sheroes who dedicated their lives to peace, justice and equality for all people. Today we honor the man whose life and works were committed to ensuring that promises and dreams would be realized. “In his short time, Dr. King, by his example and leadership, moves us closer to the principals on which America was founded. It’s not delineated in the budget where it’s transferred to. If it’s going to administrative oversight, I don’t believe you can justify that. I think it’s in violation of state law. “The other thing I’m asking about is the bonds that will be paid off in 2013 and ’14. Council OKs sewer, water rate hikes The City Council last week approved 4-percent rate hikes in each of the next two years for water and sewage treatment services. The city’s first water/sewer rate hikes in five or six years will amount to about an extra $15 per year on most residents’ bills, Phil Harrington, director of capital improvements/water rights, told the council at its Jan. 13 meeting. Out of 27,000 letters sent out to residents notifying them of the proposed rate hikes, only four households sent back letters protesting the increases. Only one person, former Councilman Allen Payton, spoke against the hikes, arguing that the city isn’t currently using all of the money in the water/sewer funds for water and sewage treatment services. “The issue to me is the trans-

that been taken into consideration in your determination of raising this fee?” Harrington did not respond to the bond question, but said that the transfers out of the water and sewer funds are “moving internally to support the operation and design of the facility.” For example, they may be used to cover the costs to repair the sidewalks, curbs, gutters and streets when new water and sewer lines are put in or old ones are upgraded. In another council action, Council members Reggie Moore

and Mary Rocha continue to be concerned about ensuring that appointments to city commissions will increase the diversity on those commissions. Both voted against Mayor Jim Davis’ nomination of Mike Langford to the Planning Commission, saying they supported Kay Trail instead. But Langford was approved with the votes of the other three council members. All of the council members supported the appointment of Vincent Manuel to the commission. The council also agreed unanimously to expand the size of the Economic Development Commission to seven members, creating an additional two seats. At the Dec. 16 meeting, Davis see Rate page 13A

Supporters flock to aid of animal advocate by Ruth Roberts Staff Writer

Connie Foster will be the first to tell you she’s a survivor, but recent events have tested even her scrappy resolve. The Bethel Island resident who cares for abandoned and abused animals lost dozens of pets in a twoalarm fire Jan. 12. The cause of the blaze is still under investigation. “The county is still looking into what happened,” said Battalion Chief Jeff Burris. “But because we had two training engines on Bethel Island at the time, we were able to have four guys show up within minutes. That doesn’t happen very often because of our staffing problems, so we were glad things went so smoothly and no human lives were lost.” The fire, which caused $200,000 in damage, started in the front of the house on Taylor Road. Foster, who was on the back end of her 27-acre property caring for some newborn goats, said she was gone for no more than 10 minutes when she returned to find the house in flames. A friend who was with her at the time tried to retrieve the animals inside the house, but smoke and flames prevented him from getting past the front door. “It was all very scary. Smoke was pouring out of the house and fire was everywhere,” said Foster, who lost a dog, a rabbit, 85 birds and a pot-bellied pig in the blaze. “For me, these animals are the most important thing in the world, and it is devastating. I don’t

even think it’s really sunk in.” Foster was unwilling to leave her property because of the other horses, sheep, llamas and goats she cares for on her spread. Her greatest concern after the fire was how she would get water to all her animals. “When I stopped by Monday evening to see if she was OK,” said neighbor Jamie Wetzel, “her (Foster’s) only concern was that she didn’t have electricity to run her well and to make sure all of her animals had water. She didn’t wonder where she would spend the night or how she would get by these next few weeks until things are sorted out … She’s a really amazing lady.” Since then she has been a lady forced to rely on the kindness of strangers, and it’s been a kindness fraught with mixed blessings. A debit/gift card given to her by the American Red Cross was denied twice at a local Target store, and a $100 bill handed to Foster by a stranger who drove up to her house turned out to be counterfeit. “It was a little weird, I have to say,” said Foster. “All I was trying to do was buy a few essentials, and to find out the card (debit/gift) is no good or that my money is fake was a little much on top of everything else.” However, Foster is quick to say that the majority of the help she has received has been beyond her wildest imaginings. People she hardly knows, and some she has never met, have been dropping off checks and clothes and household staples to see her through. A neighbor drove an RV onto Foster’s property

and offered it as a temporary home until she is back on her feet. “I’m not a person who asks for help, I’ve always been the one doing the giving,” said Foster. “So this has been hard for me to accept. But I have to say it’s been awesome. I never knew there were so many people, good people, who are willing to help. It’s makes all this a little easier.” Foster said she’s not sure when she’ll be allowed back inside the house, which might be declared uninhabitable by local authorities. If that is the case, Foster said insurance and a positive attitude would see her through

to the next chapter of her life. “You know, I don’t honestly know if I could go back inside that house, anyway,” said Foster. “It will never be the same and I can’t picture what my animals went through in there. If I have to rebuild, I want a log cabin; always wanted one of those. If I can have a home and my animals are safe; then I’ll be cruisin’. That’s enough for me.” A fund has been set up in Foster’s name at the Bank of the West on Main Street in Oakley. Donations and contributions may also be sent to P.O. Box 1063, Bethel Island, CA 94511.

Locals laud Obama, celebrate diversity by Rick Lemyre

Tamika London has her photo snapped with a likeness of President Barack Obama during the Women Leading Change Now inauguration celebration on Tuesday.

Staff Writer They came to Cortona Park in Brentwood to celebrate and support increased opportunities for women and other under-represented groups in government. There were booths offering health care tips, children’s books, hats, purses and vitamins, and there was singing, barbecue, and certificates of appreciation for the civic leaders on hand. But the buzz was all about the man whose life-size cardboard cutout stood stoically in the corner: President Barack Obama. The event was the Women Leading Change Now vendor showcase and inauguration celebration, and although public turnout was light, it didn’t dampen the enthusiasm of the 50 or so people there to share their support for diversity and each other on a historic day. “I’m a real fan of Obama,” said Oakley’s Robert Duncan as he posed for a picture with “the president.” “Every once in a while you get a guy that will grab you, make you think he can get something done. I like that about him; I couldn’t be happier.” Antioch’s Matt Vance said he was impressed by Obama’s intestinal fortitude, and expects to see great things over the long haul. “I like his guts,” he said. “I like the fact that he’s not conforming to anyone’s expectations, just his own morals and God. If things

don’t all turn around right away, I’m not going to blame him. It’s going to take some time, but every small decision is going to add up to an overall result.” Jodie Dale of Discovery Bay liked the new president’s call for the country to face, and deal with, its responsibilities, and his promise to help pull on those bootstraps. “He fired me up,” she said. “He talked about a new era of responsibility. He was taking ownership with us of our problems. His speech left me thinking, “Wow, we’ve got a chance to get some stuff done.” Darwin Foster of Sacramento found things to like and be hopeful about, and others to be skeptical about. “I was impressed by his speaking skills,” he said. “I voted for McCain, and I listen to (conservative talk shows host) Rush Limbaugh. He (Limbaugh) was

saying things like ‘We’ve heard it all before’ and ‘This is nothing new,’ but I disagree. I was impressed.” Foster wouldn’t speculate, however, on how much of Obama’s agenda will turn out well, or can be accomplished at all. “I can’t see beyond today, because he doesn’t know what he’s up against, and a lot of what he said during the campaign wasn’t informed. If he comes through with his plan to share the wealth, I’ll be disappointed. I’ll help a guy who’s down, but I’ll do it out of my own personal choice. Don’t make me do it.” Still, he thinks the new president has what it takes to do the right thing, once he’s up to speed, and thinks his presidency is a feather in America’s cap. “He’s a strong enough character to see

what’s real and go with it,” he said. “I’m proud to see him succeed, not because he’s black, but because he didn’t have it handed to him. He had a hard start.” Antioch Mayor Pro Tem Mary Rocha said she’s particularly pleased about the barriers that have been brought down, even if the effect isn’t permanent. “He brought unity,” she said. “Color doesn’t matter at the present time, although that monster might come back up. But I think he’s going to follow through, and people will go back to work, buy clothes, buy cars.” Rocha said some of Obama’s agenda will be tough to accomplish immediately (“Ending the war is very complicated”) but hopes that there will be some things done right away. “The public is going to want to see something happen right now.” Maralyn Jammal of Knightsen, who has grandchildren of mixed heritage, said the breaking of the Oval Office color barrier is important. “There was a ceiling that’s gone now – and hope, not only for blacks, but for all of us, that we don’t have to live within colored lines any more.” She also thinks Obama’s policy of inclusion will mean a more moderate government than some people might fear. “The president doesn’t make all the decisions all by himself,” she said. “That’s the old fear, and we have to get beyond that. It’s like (Americans are) a sports team: we’re all individuals, but we’re see Obama page 13A

A Unique Valentine’s bash by Ruth Roberts Staff Writer Christina Remson is a member of the Unique Girlfriends, an East County support group for young women with developmental and physical challenges. But for 21-year-old Christina, who has Down Syndrome, unique is a matter of perspective. “For us, it’s (Unique Girlfriends) about coming together and being together,” she said. “I’ve made lots of good friends; we have a lot of fun and a lot in common.” Founded in 2006 by Christina’s mother Myrna and neighbor Adriana Smith, who also has a daughter with the disability, the original mission of the group was to offer the girls a safe, accepting place to play, support and bond with one another. “I tried to put Gigi in Girl Scouts and other groups like that when she was younger, and she was always the oddman out,” said Smith of her daughter, now 17. “So I finally decided that I was just going to start my own club, and it’s been a blessing. The Unique Girlfriends celebrates our similarities as well as our differences.” And one of the group’s commonalities is dancing. When the Girlfriends first began, Remson would host dances at her home complete with DJ (compliments of her oldest son), food and

refreshments. But while the get-togethers continued to grow in size, Remson’s living room did not. Before long she was looking for a larger venue – and found it at the Brentwood Community Center. “When we first started, we had maybe 20 people at my house,” said Remson. “We would get donations from members, and when we had enough money, we’d have a party. But now we’re up to about 80 members, and I just don’t have the room anymore.” So together with Recreation Supervisor Barbie Gary, Remson began

working to secure the community center for a series of events. The endeavor was a success, and the first party will be a Valentine’s Day celebration on Feb. 13. “Myrna came to us very organized and with a kind of model of what she wanted to do,” said Gary. “We loved the idea and were glad we were able to help. It should be a lot of fun.” The event is open to the general public as well as the special-needs population, and boys are welcome, too. “We want everyone to come – boys and girls,” said Smith. “We’ll be hosting the dance and providing food and prizes and lots of fun. A big part of this event is to get the kids that don’t get out of the house as often to come down and enjoy themselves. It’s such a joy to see these kids get together without any defenses, without feeling shy, and having a great time. It’s really contagious.” The Valentine’s Day event will be held on Friday, Feb. 13 from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Brentwood Community Center, 730 Third St. Admission is $6 and will include food, refreshments and prizes. Pre-registration is required. To register or learn about upcoming events, call Gary at the Brentwood Recreation Department at 925-516-5444 or e-mail Adriana Smith at gigimom@sbcglobal. net.

WARNING ABOUT LOAN MODS “Loan mods” is short for a loan modification. This is where your lender agrees to modify the terms of your promissory note. They can lower your interest rate, lower your payments, postpone delinquent amounts, reduce principal (very rare) or any combination of these. The reason they would agree to do this would be that they would rather lose a little money now than to lose a lot of money later if they have to foreclose. At least, that’s how it’s SUPPOSED to work. What we are finding is that many applications for loan modifications are turned down, or they remain “in process” indefinitely. The reasons for this are many. Some lenders truly want to modify loans, but are just swamped with requests and can’t keep up, other lenders are only giving lip service to the issue to put on a show for Congress that they are trying to work with borrowers, when in reality they modify very few loans. This opens up a business opportunity for outside companies to help you modify your loan with your lender. Their claims sound almost

too good to be true. Their ads scream, “Behind on payments? We can help! Call now!” Once you talk to them, they’ll tell you all about their back-door connections and great success with past clients who had tried to modify on their own with no luck. Of course, they will charge for their services, but who wouldn’t pay $2,000 if it saves you $10,000 or saves your home? Hold your horses… If your lender has filed a Notice of Default against your property, then California Civil Code Section 2945 makes it ILLEGAL for any type of “foreclosure consultant” to take an advance fee in regards to this type of work. [There is an exception for attorneys.] So before you hire one of these companies, make sure they only collect IF they are successful, and seek legal counsel at the same time. Let’s be careful out there! If you have questions on this or any other real estate topic, call me at (925) 240MOVE (6683). My Friends All Laughed When I Tried This New Sciatica Treatment Until … They saw that I had found the newest breakthrough non-surgical back pain and sciatica treatment that may end your pain and solve your herniated, bulging or degenerated disc pain problems… You may be thinking “What IS going to happen to me if I can’t find a solution to my back pain or leg pain?” The answer to your question starts out hopeful. I’ll just go to my doctor and he will take care of me. He will know what to do. But then something very odd happens to you.

He does. “We can inject pain drugs through a big needle into your spine”. You cringe in fear and reluctantly agree at this point. “NOW I will be fixed”. Or at least that’s what you’ve been led to believe. You have either no pain relief, some pain relief , a whole lot of pain relief or it makes you have more pain.

You discover your primary care physician is not really well equipped to handle that job. He or She is very busy treating infections, diabetes, heart conditions and the like, which they are very well equipped to handle.

The second pain shot (oh, yes there will be a second and a third) is usually less effective or not at all and requires another one. You come to the realization that pain shots will not fix the disc bulge or herniation still smashing your delicate nerves causing you pain. Finally, your doctor recommends you see a “Specialist” (Back Surgeon) and he can do risky surgery.

This is very apparent with your resulting drug prescription for Soma muscle relaxers and Norco, Neurontin or any other of the various prescribed pain medications. You then take the drugs soon to feel strangely like your not altogether “there” or you immediately are sick ,feel nausea and vomit the drugs as fast as you swallowed them. When you get sick of that (pardon the pun! I couldn’t resist), you go back to your doctor looking for another more appealing treatment. This time it’s physical therapy. The thing you already can’t do!! You already can’t bend over, twist, lift things, and now they want you to do more of it with a bunch of other back pain sufferers! Gimme a break. Now, you’ve really had it. You try the chiropractor and either you feel better for a little while only to have the pain return, or worse nothing happens at all. Or even worse than that, after your treatment you have MORE pain (not because chiropractic does not work..your condition is just too deteriorated or severe). Then you try acupuncture because you read in a magazine it could help pain. You then realize sticking a bunch of needles in you will not magically remove the bulging disc that is smashing your nerve and causing you pain. You try massage as you read on the internet massage may help alleviate back pain…only to be disappointed. You’re now beginning to feel desperate. Back to your primary care doctor to tell him about your adventures hoping he will have a different answer this time.

If you’ve read the latest article in the Journal Of American Medical Association*, you will see surgery patients and non surgery patients turned out the same! Why even do the surgery? Risk of paralysis, death, infections, more pain. No thanks. So. Back to the question. What are YOU going to do if you are stuck between serious back pain or leg pain or surgery? Great News! A new extremely effective non surgical new back pain treatment is now available in Brentwood. If you are suffering from back pain or leg pain, having pain at the belt line, fire down your legs, numb legs, feet or toes or feel like a knife is stuck in your back you owe to yourself to check out this new procedure.

COMPREHENSIVE ASSESSMENT YOU HAVE EVER HAD or I will buy you lunch! (I haven’t bought one yet !) Yes! I am very confident, but I can’t help EVERBODY. You see, there’s a very small percentage of folks we can’t help. Here’s what a couple applicants said after I told them both I couldn’t help them: “I was treated very nicely. The doctors have listened to me and they didn’t rush me out of the office, despite the fact I wasn’t a candidate. The exam I had was super, the best I’ve had anywhere. The doctor explained things to me that no one else ever has.” Non-Candidate, Brentwood, Ca

“I thought I’d write a note to you and all of those potential patients who have serious doubts (as I had) about your decompression treatments. Actually, I thought your procedure was more of a psychological placebo designed for everyone, instead of a non-surgical process that could repair injured vertebral discs. Imagine my surprise when you advised me that my condition was too severe for your procedure to correct. To me, that refusal added world’s of credibility to your program. It showed me that you are only there to help patients; not just to take their money. I assure you that I will recommend you to anyone I know or meet that suffers from spine and/ or disc pain. I can do this knowing full well that they will be treated right.” Non-Candidate, Antioch, Ca

Finally, Some Good News! If you’ve been suffering with back pain or arm/leg pain caused by a disc bulge, disc herniation or squashed or compressed discs. My name is Dr. James Martin D.C. and I’ve successfully treated hundreds of patients with spinal decompression so there’s no reason your back problem should be any different. In fact, I’m so confident we can help you, I’m willing to back it up…but not with empty promises.

I GUARANTEE you will only be accepted into our program IF YOU QUALIFY for the treatment AFTER having THE MOST THOROUGH AND

muscles, hips, pain index, reflexes, discs, tendons, spine, pelvis, x-rays, flexibility, nerves

And that’s why I’m offering a limited time…

The FREE 19 Point “Squashed-Disc” Qualifying Assessment That’s right, no charge and we won’t try to sell you anything. But you will find out if you are a candidate for this revolutionary new therapy. You won’t be left wondering if it’s something that could have eliminated your pain.

As your FREE Assessment we’ll check out your: ligaments,

Expires Jan. 30, 2009 Just read what a few of our patients that have been through the procedure had to say: “I had excruciating back pain and was worried I would need surgery. I tried acupuncture, acupressure, chiropractic, and pain medications. Dr. Martin and spinal decompression have given me my life back. I couldn’t walk and was in excruciating pain. I now have no pain and I have my mobility back.” Bonnie Salmon – Owner Scooters Café

“I had lower back pain and leg numbness so bad I could not sleep properly. It’s wonderful to be able to sleep all night without pain and to stand straight and walk without both legs going numb.” Marcia Penick – Retired

“I had severe back pain and was losing ability to function. My problem started 13 years ago and it got severe in the last 2 months or so. After the first treatment, the numbness in my left leg and foot went away.” Burna McClelland- Rancher

“I had unrelenting back pain, gloom and disappointment as I had several doctors were unable to help me. Spinal Decompression is really amazing! I have gone through a transformation of pain, gloom and disappointment to a new value, new hope and a new lease on life.” Herb Olsen-Retired

Recently I was attending a holiday party (yes a late holiday party) with good friends, in a gorgeous home, in what I’m sure many would consider a good neighborhood. The host, an older gentleman whom I highly respect, responded to my praise of his beautiful house by simply stating, “We did it the right way”, and that was it. No more small talk, no more conversation, he said his piece and was off to the next guest. And honestly that was all he needed to say, you don’t have to be in this industry to understand what he was getting across. When done the right way, with the right intentions, home ownership can truly be a thing of beauty; after all doesn’t the American Dream revolve around a home to raise your family in? Over the last five or six years, at least from where I’m sitting, it seems the very same time tested ideals that allowed my colleague to live comfortably with his wife in their immaculate home have either been forgotten, or simply put on the back burner and replaced mainly by greed. I ask you, where is the pride in ownership, sweat equity, and the belief that your first home is never your dream home? One of the compounding reasons we find ourselves in the “mess” we’re in is the mistaken, 21st century, ideals if you will, of home ownership. What happened to buying a home because you like where it is and the floor plan makes sense. Owning a home is now a business decision…not a place to raise your family and live comfortably as

you share the community atmosphere. It’s important that we remember Brentwood, and the surrounding areas, were built on family morals and old town ethics. You work hard, earn your loan, earn your home, and it’s that simple. There are no gray areas of “stated” or “liar” loans, just black and white standard lending. A potential buyer might have to save a little longer and rent for an extra year, but that same buyer will never have to worry about anyone, or any bank, taking what is truly theirs. The home they purchase is theirs because they have skin in the game, they put money down. They didn’t simply state they made X amount of dollars, find the wrong mortgage “professional” who would “fog the mirror”, and presto keys appeared in their hand. There is a certain pride in accomplishment when things are done the right way, the kind that comes from moving up slowly but surely and finding yourself where you want to be thirteen houses later…as is the case with my dinner party host from the beginning of this story. So with more inventory than ever, interest rates historically low and only 3.5% down required, now more than ever it’s possible for your family to start their own real estate timeline if you will. As always, I welcome all questions and or concerns pertaining to real estate lending on my cell phone, 510-798-0060, or via email, tfreymortgages@yahoo.com. – Advertisement

The Antioch Church Family Chorus Voices sing “Oh, Lord, How Excellent in thy Name.”

King’s 80th from page 1A of his actions and righteousness of his cause are a lasting legacy. He woke up the conscience and changed America for all time. “If you’re asking what happened to that dream, on August 23rd, 2008, exactly 45 years to the day when Dr. King united the nation with ‘I have a dream,’ Barack Obama accepted the nomination for president of the United States.” County Supervisor Federal Glover was in Washington, D.C. to witness the inauguration, but his Chief of Staff, David Fraser, spoke for him, urging people to honor King by helping their neighbors.

“Civil rights does not become civil rights until we understand the value of civil service,” said Fraser. “In other words, being neighborly, being brotherly, taking care of those in need … and giving them an opportunity to excel in life. So in memory of Dr. King, today I want to urge you that if you are an advocate for equality in our society, of civil rights for all people … begin by being a civil servant: giving, sharing and embracing your neighbor.” The event included performances by Antioch school students, a benediction and a march to the Nick Rodriguez Community Center followed by a reception.

all on the same side.” Brentwood’s Cheryl Cooper said Obama’s election was “incredible,” and that the 44th president had restored her belief that truly representative government was possible. “I get the sense that people are looking for someone to lead them that has their interests at heart, she said. “I think Bush was born with a silver spoon in his mouth. His ideals and values are different. I can’t relate to that.” She also hailed a new age of honesty. Previous presidents, Republican and Democrat alike, have all had some problem with their integrity. “I didn’t trust them,” she said. Obama’s truthfulness and leadership skills are a refreshing change, she added, but there’s also a more practical reason to be optimistic. “Things are so bad, we can’t go anywhere but up.” Merthia Thompson said that although she wasn’t able to go to Washington, she was nevertheless feeling the love, and the change that came with it. “You could actually feel the spirit of the people,” she said. “You could see the love – that’s God – and people were caught up in that. When you think about what our people (African-Americans) have gone through, change really has come. People are feeling that we’re all going to get along together in heaven, so we might as well get

Rate from page 1A said he’d like to nominate Jim Lanter and James Kyle to those seats. Davis reiterated his desire at last week’s meeting to make those nominations,

despite opposition by Moore and Rocha who said Davis’ choices would not increase the diversity that would be provided by another applicant, whom they did not name. The nominations will be made at a future meeting.

started right here. This isn’t just something happening now; it’s a movement. The spirit starts at the top and goes down, and with the leader of our country doing it, we’ll be able to keep it going.” Also heralding the change, and what it means to the average man and woman, was Antioch City Councilman Reggie Moore. “This was a watershed election,” he said. “Government has a role in enhancing people’s lives, and in the hands of the wrong people it can do some wrong things. It sounds like a cliché, but we have an administration now that will focus on Main Street rather than Wall Street. We have an opportunity to correct things, to help people get their basic needs met.” The event ended with WLCN CEO Yvonne Gamble’s presentation of Community Hope Awards to attendees including Rocha, Moore and the Brentwood Diversity Committee’s Desty Shoemaker honoring their “courage, determination and commitment as a public servant.” “We live our lives for a purpose,” Gamble said, addressing everyone. “You all came here with a purpose in mind, to network with each other and to celebrate this historic day. When you tell the story to your great, great, great-grandchildren, (you’ll be able to say) you were there.”

Thanks from Friends Editor: On behalf of the Friends of Oakley Community Foundation, we want to send a special thank-you to the board at the BBRC and all volunteers from Brentwood who helped make our first annual Christmas Basket Program a success. In all, more than 125 families received food and toys for the holiday. As I watched Brentwood’s distribution of food and toys on Saturday, I was proud to see very caring people, passionate about helping others, continue Rosie Pierce’s legacy. On the Oakley side, we had help also from many of our friends, family, neighbors, business owners and schools, also passionate and caring people willing to pitch in for the cause. We thank you all so much for your hard work! We are not the first to do this in Oakley. Bill and Denise Arnold of the Oakley Delta Lions Club have been doing this every Christmas for years, and I would like to acknowledge their efforts and say I am proud to know you both. It is an honor to work with all the fine people that help make our communities a better place. Again, thank you! Jim Frazier Friends of Oakley Community Foundation

Motorcycle racing fans in Cuba petition their government to host an event as part of the popular Endurocross Series. Cuban authorities schedule an Endurocross event and at least two freestyle motocross exhibitions for the 2010 season. 9 – An international corporation will manufacture a 15-horsepower diesel/electric hybrid dualsport motorcycle. and home power generator. 8 – The International Olympic Committee considers adding a 40-minute motocross race to the triathlon. This would be in addition to the 40k bicycle ride and other tests. Members of the IOC understand that professional motocross riders are some of the best-conditioned athletes in the world. This proposal seeks to address that fact and include them into the competition. 7 – After reviewing how successful the ecologically sensitive four-wheel-drive vehicle- based wildlife tours are in Africa, the National Park Service reviews its road and trail network to better facilitate public access. The Service initiates a public rule-making process in 2009. The Service believes that if it works in African national parks, it should work in the USA, too. 6 – Based on a recommendation from a SiliconValley-based research firm, the United Nations declares all humans as “pollutants” because they are carbon-based and are claimed to be a significant contributor to global warming. Researchers are directed to develop a program that genetically changes humans into a copperbased life form. Until that research is complete and because of political and public blowback, the UN lists only “recreationists” as interim polluters and requires them to scale back outdoor activities and instead explore the world, hunt, fish and play sports on their computers. 5 – The new Congress and Obama administration develop a new program to cut the federal budget and consolidate government agencies. One proposal is to combine the USDA Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management into a new department called the Land and Forest Bureaucratic Service. No decision has yet been made as to the color of the uniforms. 4 – After president-elect Obama is sworn in on Jan. 20, members of the Bush Cabinet meet at Dick Cheney’s property in Wyoming for a one-week recreation vacation that consists of snowmobiling, winter 4x4ing, ice fishing and relaxation. 3 – Owners of Dubai’s Indoor Snow Park invite the National Snowmobile Racing Association to hold an event at the facility. The Association considers having an event there for the 2009/2010 racing season. A large water-crossing (where snowmobiles hydroplane) is being planned as part of the course. 2 – A new coalition of pro-access Democrats and Republicans form a Congressional Save our Trails working group. This group finds a receptive ear in the Obama administration. President Obama directs his cabinet to develop a public-land-oriented works project where grants and other monies are directed to hire the unemployed and youth to do trail maintenance on federal lands. 1 – Motorized recreation groups and mainstream environmental organizations join forces in 2009 to promote efforts by the Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management to better manage and enhance both their motorized and non-motorized recreation programs. Both groups understand that the days of “Big Gulp” wilderness proposals are over. However, there will be times when the groups part company on specific issues. Don Amador Oakley

Lanyard madness grips campus Editor: I am a concerned parent of students in the Antioch school district. I see so many problems creeping into our district, and I seriously fear for our city’s future. There are those who see things through rose-colored glasses, and feel that our school district is improving, but our children see things differently. My high-school-age child was called out of class because he didn’t have his identification lanyard. He actually owns four of them because every time he forgets one, he is forced to go to the security office and get a new one, for which he will pay $5. My oldest son went the entire school year last year with a picture of a World of Warcraft character taped over his ID picture. This son forgot about the detention, so has now been given Saturday school. If he is late, or doesn’t go for some reason, he will be suspended two days. Two days … because of not wearing a lanyard. Two days of no school, and no learning. I ask myself how lanyards could be this valuable to the school. They certainly don’t really protect the students. My sons have let friends borrow theirs if the friends had forgotten their own. Clearly, the lanyard itself doesn’t guarantee that the student is even who they claim to be. But wow, think of all the money the school is making from kids who forget their lanyards. Too bad many of these kids can’t even afford school lunch, but they must pay for a new lanyard. In addition, when they leave class to get the new lanyard, they miss valuable class time. And people question why our test scores are dropping. Maybe the school thinks that lanyards will keep non-students off campus. I don’t know about other kids, but my kids could make a fake lanyard in a few minutes time on the computer. The other day my son was with some friends at school, and some other students threw plastic water bottles at them. One of his friends was hurt. My son was angry, and thought about retaliation. I counseled him to seek out the school security instead. Security was informed about this behavior, but did nothing about it. This is probably because throwing things at people isn’t as bad as not wearing a lanyard. Today my son told me that one of the kids, who had spoken up to the kids doing the harm, was ganged up on by those kids and beaten today. His nose was broken. But don’t worry, my son is doing Saturday school to make sure he is wearing his lanyard. Antioch is safe from my criminal son, right? This is how Deer Valley is set up. It has two co-principals, who run the school. Remember, those are two salaries. My question is, what is the duty of the vice principals? Why not use these vice principals to do the work of one of those co-principals, and save that salary money to improve the school? Meanwhile, the vice principals are safely tucked away in the head office. If trouble arises, one of the security ladies (the only security I’ve ever seen were older ladies. Bless their hearts, they try, but they need help) run as fast as they can to try to help. If the vice principals were out and about, they could help, but unfortunately they are safely seated in the office. The teachers don’t feel safe; there is no one to back them up in case of emergency. But don’t worry, we have those lanyards, we should feel safe.

This school district is falling apart, and the teachers will leave if things don’t change. Why doesn’t the press take notice of the vote of no confidence that the teachers issued about our superintendent? If so many teachers are unhappy, there is a good reason. The teachers are the most highly educated employees in the school district, but their opinion is largely ignored. I for one would like to believe that Antioch can change, and that my children will have good teachers in the future, but frankly, I see a different future coming. I worry that all of our wonderful teachers will get fed up and leave. It’s a sad thought, but don’t worry, I’m sure each kid will be safely wearing their lanyard. Delores DeVictoria Antioch

New friends and guardian Editor: I am writing to publicly acknowledge my thanks and gratitude for the fast and professional response following an accident that occurred on Jan. 1. My husband Mark was riding in an annual dirt bike marathon held at Sand Hill Ranch. He had a pretty nasty accident on the course, and ended up having to go to the hospital as a result. We had our motor home, a trailer and other equipment out there in addition to Mark’s dirt bike. I was scared and focused on getting Mark to the hospital, but the folks at Sand Hill Ranch all pulled together and not only got Mark to the hospital but took care of our stuff, locked it up and hauled it to a safe destination. They made sure that I didn’t even have to think about anything but the immediate care of my husband. So, a huge thanks goes out to my new friends and Mark’s guardian angels: Tom and Phil Andersen, Robby Starrick, Brian Fink, Dr. Tom, Dr. Ryan, Fuzzy, and finally, the guy who rode in the van with us to the ambulance. You made a scary situation very tolerable. Don’t know what we would have done without any of you! My heartfelt thanks. Judy Aiken Brentwood

The rest of the story Editor: I am very fortunate to receive coverage in various local media about Special Kids Foundation, getting the word out about our organization, the supports we offer to families, and to someday find those who will help us fund our dreams is such a gift, but I am saddened by how some media omits what was actually said in an interview. This most recent reporter told me the magazine article would feature me, our organization, and what we are doing in East County. They interviewed me for over an hour. I want everyone to know the story I told. I started with Pam Gallud and the support group she ran from her home. This was the beginning of my journey. I spelled her name, and sang the praises of the five women at the meetings who supported me in my darkest years. I told the tale of our support group, which gave birth to the idea of our facility, and how we help each other in so many ways. I told about Sash Migay, his bringing TOPSoccer to Brentwood. I spelled his name, and see Letters page 18A

sang some more about how his way with kids is so amazing: his gentle style, and how his group grew. I told of my husband, Mark McBride, creating Freedom League as part of Delta Baseball, so kids could do that sport too, and how the two of them, Sash and Mark, as fathers in similar situations, understood each other so well. I told how Jude Byrne started every activity she wanted for her own kids to have – from Challenger bowling with Ellie Tunell to Music Makers with Miss Jane. I explained about how Special Kids is not providing these activities itself, but rather the people involved are the promotional team and organizational squad for them. I laughed about how Jude’s database reaches so many. I told about how another board member, Ana Chuey, took a position with YMCA to work

daily on our programs and bring services to many families. I talked about how hard she works now both for SK as well as the Y to make sure our vision doesn’t get pushed aside. I told about her husband, David, and his efforts coaching both baseball and soccer, making DVDs and always searching for things that will help us. I told about board member Linda Maurer, making sure our agenda is handled properly too, while commuting to volunteer for us. I told about Cathy Woods and her coordinating Pump It Up, Paula Horne researching for us, and getting us a grant from Chevron, and Loretta Holder arranging for Liberty Mutual to help us too. I explained that all these parents did these things whiles working, many times raising more than one child, and having special-needs children too. I told about our other board members/ parents, from Val Castaldi stuffing envelopes to Tammy Young calling all over town, to Chris Connell creating our scrapbook – all volunteers. I told about Jim Frazier in Oakley who called me, joining with us to reach our goals, partnering with the YMCA, putting money as well as love (and elbow grease) into our organization. I told about Vickey Rinehart, Susan Darm and Doug Hartsough, who started giving their all from the beginning … and I spelled their names, too. If they had written my story, it would have filled their entire magazine, and even I can see how that might not work. I want everyone to know, I told our story. I know, and appreciate that this is not just me, but a collection of so many loving, generous forces making this thing happen. Lisa McBride Discovery Bay

Wolverines take bite out of Patriots by Dave Roberts Staff Writer

The Heritage High girls basketball team was on a roll, having won four games in a row. Its last misstep, on Jan. 2, was a tough 75-39 loss to Deer Valley. So Tuesday night’s game against DV was an opportunity for the Patriots to use their momentum to even the score on their home court. But the Wolverines came in with major “mo” of their own – a five-game winning streak, which they lengthened to six after defeating Heritage 70-52. For the first quarter and a half, it looked like Heritage might be able to exact that revenge. The Patriots held a 13-11 lead at the end of the first quarter, which they lengthened to 17-11 just a minute into the second quarter. But halfway through the second quarter, Deer Valley’s 5-foot-3-inch point guard, Patrice Saindon, took charge and started knocking down threes – three threes, to be exact – to put Deer Valley up 36-29 at the half. The Wolverines play an aggressive, physical game, which can result in fouls – Heritage went to the line 25 times – but which nearly as often results in steals,

Heritage High’s Kiana Caban guards Deer Valley’s Cydnie Mixon, who looks ready to pass to Emily Allard (24). Deer Valley won 70-52. blocked shots and rebounds, not to mention in the third quarter, limiting Heritage to just eight points, resulting in an 18-point the intimidation factor. DV’s tenacious D came to the fore Wolverine lead that proved to be the final

margin of victory after the teams played evenly in the final quarter. “I think we just came out a little flat in the first quarter,” said Deer Valley Coach Lindsay Wisely afterwards. “We hang our hat on defense. Tonight we didn’t play the best defense we could have. (At the half) we made some defensive adjustments. It’s not easy to play on the road. This is a tough place to play. Hats off to Heritage; they played really hard. “Patrice was pretty unbelievable tonight. She led her team, knocked down threes when we needed it; got steals when we needed it. That’s what you want from your senior point guard. She really had a lot of composure and a lot of leadership. She got the job done, and that’s what I love about her.” Saindon was the game’s high scorer with 19 points (five three-pointers), followed by Deer Valley’s Emily Allard with 18 points (and 10 rebounds) and Raven Fox with 11. Heritage’s high scorers were Ivy Jones with 15 points and Kiana Caban with 13. Deer Valley (10-6, 6-0 league) will try to extend its winning streak at Freedom High tonight, Jan. 23, while Heritage (12-5, 4-2) will try to launch a new winning streak at Antioch. Both games start at 7 p.m.

Tournament lures adept anglers to Bethel Island On the cold and foggy Delta morning of Jan. 10, 18 teams converged on Russo’s Marina in Bethel Island for the second tournament in the race for Anglers of the Year: the U.S. Anglers Choice West Delta Pro Teams Tournament, sponsored by Legend Boats, Mercury, MotorGuide, Lowrance, Inside-Lines, Phoenix Glass and Toad Thumper Jigs. Early morning temperatures dipped into the 20s, but after the fog burned off, the day turned sunny and beautiful. The tournament commenced at safe light and all the teams returned to the marina at 3:15 p.m. for the weigh-in. The teams reported that cold water temperatures slowed the pace of fishing. Teams were tight-lipped about how and where they caught their fish, but what-

ever method or bait they were using, they had to fish it slow. There were 14 teams weighing in fish for a total of 112 pounds. Dee Thomas of Brentwood, Mr. Consistency, and his team partner Billy Peunggate snagged first-place honors with a five-fish limit weighing 17.88 pounds. Their limit included a bass weighing 5.24 pounds, the second big fish of the tournament. Thomas and Peunggate received first-place plaques and $1,649 for the win. Second place was taken by the team of Mark Daniels Jr. of Fairfield and Jamond Andrews of Oakley. They weighed in only four fish that topped the scales at 13.25 pounds, including a kicker bass that weighed 5.28 pounds. Their kicker

The team of Mike Birch of San Ramon and Brian Carpenter of Livermore caught and weighed in five bass weighing

13.04 pounds, good for the third-place plaques and $590. The next event for the West Delta Pro Team trail is scheduled for Feb. 15 back at Russo’s Marina. – Contributed by Steve Hayashi

Delta Baseball League is about to begin its 25th season of play. The league, originally named Delta Peanut League, was started to promote a positive environment in which kids can learn the game of baseball. The big difference between this league and others is that players cannot sit out more than one inning before everyone else sits once. You can’t learn the game of baseball on the bench. Last year, the league partnered with Cal Ripken Baseball to create a competitive division for the 11-to-12-year-old boys. Through district and regional tournaments, the kids could play in the Cal Ripken World Series in Baltimore. The league’s girls program has partnered with Babe Ruth Girls Softball to afford the older girls the same opportunities for postseason play. More than 1,000 kids participated in Delta Baseball League last year, making it the largest baseball/softball program in East County. Three years ago, Freedom League baseball was started for developmentally/physically handicapped children. Through generous donations from various companies, this league is offered for free. Kids and young adults from ages 4 to 22 are welcome to participate. Peer-aged, regularly-abled buddies help the special-needs children on the field, pro-

Wedding Planner

JANUARY 23, 2009

Keep that wedding budget under control MICHELLE NGUYEN

F

or many newly engaged couples, wedding planning can bring a lot of surprises,

especially when it comes to cost. The economic downturn will hit some wedding budgets hard, but that doesn’t mean a couple must abandon their dreams of a wonderful wedding.

The pictures

Couples looking to economize might consider booking fewer hours of their photographer’s time. Photographer Mike Gellerman believes that four hours ought to be enough for a professional to put together a memorable record of important and touching moments, such as the one shared by Josh and Laura Moore, above.

Gorgeous photos are a must for any wedding. Wedding photographer Mike Gellerman studied photography in college and has a background in journalism. He began shooting weddings out of school for friends 25 years ago and pursued it as a successful side business. Originally from Southern California, Gellerman moved to Brentwood three years ago. Here he has continued his photography business with his wife, who assists him as his second

photographer. He describes his style as photojournalistic with a touch of ďŹ ne art. “My favorites are the non-posed shots, the reaction shots,â€? says Gellerman. For the couple desiring great photography at a moderate price, Gellerman suggests booking less time with the photographer. His minimum is four hours, which is ample time to capture the important moments of the big day. Another suggestion for cash-strapped couples is to look at alternatives to traditional photo prints and books. Some couples are happy simply receiving digital copies of their photos on DVD rather than buying prints.

The flowers

No wedding would be complete without owers, whether adorning the bride’s bouquet or the ceremony and reception. Geraldine Stanton of Flowers by Gerry in Brentwood has more than 35 years of experience in providing owers for weddings. She breaks down wedding see Budget page 5B

Next door from page 3B Quinn and her staff help coordinate all the events at the Nines, handling all the setup and breakdown of the reception and ceremony, although the couple must provide their own flowers, décor and music. Nines offers outdoor ceremonies on its Pavilion, which overlooks the 18th green. The beautifully landscaped patio is bordered by greenery and accented with a fountain. It offers wonderful views of the course and Mt. Diablo. “We get great views of the CornFest fireworks,” said Quinn, adding that there have been brides that have booked their weddings for CornFest weekend to enjoy the display. The banquet area at Nines offers seated dining for 180 guests, though the Pavilion area may also be used during the reception for couples who desire an indoor/outdoor event. Nines offers a variety of menu options, and

Quinn was proud to note that Nines makes use of local, seasonal fresh produce in all of its menus.

Lone Tree

Lone Tree Golf Course and Event Center in Antioch is a well-known venue for wedding ceremonies and receptions. The event center can accommodate an impressive 400 guests, making it one of the largest venues in East County. “Our strength lies in our experience,” said General Manager Dave Van Fossen. Fossen, Executive Chef Jonathan Hork and Catering Director Julie Morrow make the most of their many years of experience in some of the nation’s best hotels and private country clubs. Budget from page 2B flowers into different categories: personal flowers, ceremony flowers, reception flowers and cake table flowers. When choosing which flowers to use, Stanton urges couples to choose something that has

meaning to them, such as a flower given to the bride by the groom while they were dating or a special flower from the bride’s childhood. Stanton urges couples to hire a professional for their floral needs. “A professional knows how to take into consideration the flower, texture, color and ensure that the choice complements rather than overwhelms.” When it comes to saving money, Stanton urges using seasonal flowers and prioritizing where to spend your flower money. “Give the bride whatever she wants for her day,” said Stanton, emphasizing that the bride’s flowers “should be the most beautiful of all.”

Budget from page 5B TLCakes are for weddings. Parish says that June and July are usually her busiest months for wedding cakes. She notes that she can usually accommodate cake orders with notice as short as two weeks, but that many couples order their cakes months in advance. The new trend in wedding cakes is to stack the tiers directly on top of each other rather than hold them with supports. Using supports “makes construction more difficult so that’s why they’re a bit more expensive,” explained Parish. For the bride on a budget, Parish suggests going with a less elaborate, tiered wedding cake. Another option is to go with a simple,

small wedding cake for the cake cutting, and serving guests slices from a layer cake in the same flavor.

The tuxedos

Though the bride’s gown is often the focus of the day and the budget, the groom and his groomsmen must also look their best. Tux of Class in Antioch just celebrated its 25th anniversary of selling and renting formal wear. Run by Judi Mori, the name Tux of Class was her daughter Gina Mori-Zbacnic’s idea. Local Doctor Exposes Weight Loss Industry And Saves You Big Money On Your New Years Resolution… Brentwood Doctor gives you the “skinny” on the tactics used by the diet and weight loss industry to help separate you from your hard earned dollars while selling you a pipe dream and tips on how you can lose weight without wasting money on gym memberships, outrageous diets or dangerous pills. Brentwood, Ca – Dr. James Martin D.C. has had it with the diet and weight loss industry and is indeed exposing the diet and weight loss industry and helping guide you to the most direct, fastest, effective and SAFE ways to lose the extra 5, 10, 45 or even 100 lbs. you’ve put on over the last few months or years. This local doctor has had so many of his patients doing everything under the sun to try and lose weight and failing miserably or succeeding at losing the weight only to have it return and then some, that he has just tired of seeing people victimized by these money sucking vampires that prey on innocent consumers at their weakest point. Yeah, they are waiting and salivating for YOU to make your oh so predictable and SHORT LIVED…. you know….NEW YEARS RESOLUTION!! Some of you say it every year. This year I will lose the weight. Or for some of you it’s your first year to start the never-ending year after year HOPE that you will succeed at losing the unwanted and unsightly fat hanging around your belly or cottage cheese thighs. For some of you, you really want to lose the weight for the health benefit to avoid diabetes and heart disease associated with being overweight. Whatever your case may be, There is FINALLY HOPE! Dr. Martin isn’t going to be making any friends by giving you the following information, but he is sick and tired of watching people devastated or even depressed by their weight gain and helpless feelings of despair when they fail time and time again. So here goes…. IF you are reading this and you have tried it ALL already, and you really would like to lose the weight and succeed, then pay close attention. If you have tried counting points only to throw your calculator out the window, If you have embarrassed yourself enough with public and humiliating “weigh-ins”, If you are tired of mail order, microwaved and probably unhealthy food, If you are tired of

silly “Hollywood” type diets, If you are sick of taking dangerous stimulant diet pills (yes, they are dangerous), If you are tired of starving yourself, If you have succeeded at losing the weight with any of these, BUT gained it ALL back with a few extra pounds you are in for the biggest breakthrough in weight loss Dr. Martin has ever seen. Dr. Martin believes the TRUE CAUSE of “Weight Loss Resistance Syndrome” is NOT in your mouth! It IS in your head!! My name is Dr. James Martin and No I’m not trying to be funny. Let me explain. This amazing discovery hit me like a ton of bricks and I wasn’t even looking! A while back, I was invited by a world famous doctor (now a good friend) who specialized in a non surgical, non invasive brain based behavioral repatterning treatment to help patients quickly and effectively lose weight, to bring my office staff to spend three days with him at his estate and he would train me and my staff on how to do this treatment. This world famous doctor did share with me that he had operated up to 38 weight loss centers at one time and had people losing up to HALF THEIR BODYWEIGHT and kept it off for years after receiving treatment at his centers. He showed me the before and after pictures and their stories….Dozens and dozens of them!! I was astounded!! I was so impressed that I had to try this new technology and treatment on my own patients to see if it really worked. I immediately started treatment on what I call the ULTIMATE COUCH POTATO! My mother in law had been through five back surgeries, can’t walk more than 3 houses on her block, can’t stand more than 10 minutes, can’t really do much of anything! She tried EVERYTHING! Popular weight loss centers that do public weigh-ins, mail order microwave foods, starvation, all kinds of diets, dangerous pills, you name it. And NO lasting results! She could NOT lose weight! She was severely

depressed to the point of depression medication. I called her to come into my office as I had what I called a breakthrough treatment to help her actually lose weight. She got a little excited as she could see how excited I was as I explained the treatment and she agreed to be my test subject. Well, she lost 36 pounds over 6 months doing NO EXERCISE, NO REAL ACTIVITY, NOT EVEN WALKING!! She can’t due to severe debilitating back and leg pain! I was SOLD! I watched a colleague lose over 100 pounds over 12 months! It was amazing. So, great news for you. I am now releasing this new Doctor supervised weight loss program for the first time ever in Brentwood. Imagine the feeling you get when you look good again, feel attractive, feel good about yourself. Imagine melting off the pounds quickly and easily without the hype and short lived results! I am so convinced that this program will work for you that I am offering an unheard of Satisfaction Guarantee In Writing! Yes! A real old fashioned guarantee. But there are a small number of people out there this may not work for. So, I am offering for a limited time…
