Smallwaters Estate In this little known corner of Western Australia’s south west, which is proving to be one of Australia’s most reliable wine growing areas, this boutique vineyard evolved from a dream to grow and market marron into a contract wine growing yard which then saw the potential of its superior Zinfandel grape as its premium flagship wine. Against all knowledgeable advice John believed that this variety had enormous potential in the Geographe region and sourced the wood to begin this journey. Along with his trademark “Zin”, quality Chardonnay and Shiraz were all planted in 1993 and the Major Award Winning Cabernet Sauvignon Rob’s Block in 1996 so named as this was the pet block of John’s late wife Robyn. The property, overlooking the expansive dams and marron ponds, is run on a combination of aquaculture and viticulture principles ensuring that the Smallwater Estate vineyard is free from pesticides and environmentally friendly in order to maintain the integrity of the wetland ecology. From coastal plains to escarpment the Geographe Region is the ‘G’ spot of Western Australian wine growing. Its natural beauty, pristine waters, and the fertile soils are all reflected in the quality and diversity of the award winning wines from this region.
