CEO’s Message

The standard of design this year has jumped considerably with clear evidence that wine companies both ‘Boutique’ and ‘Big’ are using professional designers and the in-house designer is disappearing. Having Lisa McGuigan on board as the Chair of the judging lifts the expectation of exploring and discovering merit in the designs. The twelve judges split into three teams were conscientious and determined to come to the right decisions. We all met in the sunny Cargo Bar overlooking Sydney’s beautiful Inner Harbour and with wonderful judging conditions the judges followed their brief under the guidance of panel leaders Toni Paterson MW, Nicola Rennie (Vinology.com.au) and Daniel McKeating (Studio Lost & Found – Perth). In an effort to introduce a range of opinions, several new industry judges joined us this year. Professional designer Marty Widholm commented: “I loved the judges in my panel, and team leader Toni Paterson is impressive! We all had the same views and it was amazing that we had practically the same taste in design and marketing (after deliberation) when judging each bottle and label. It makes me feel that at the end of the day, maybe quality, well thought out solid design is here to stay”. This year we introduced a Packers’ Prize. Before the judging, the Competition coordinator Tania De Ceglie and the workers and I all had a say and a vote which unanimously decided that Project 49 Chardonnay 2012 designed by Maud Design for Victorian boutique wine company Drink Wine was our winner. We didn’t inform the judges of this and we were pleased to see that they agreed by awarding this bottle the Best Boutique White Wine trophy. Well done packers!

Message from the Chair

If there was a catwalk for wine packaging then the Wine Design Competition would be it! What an outstanding idea this Competition is. It allows the wine industry to see a collection of ideas and applications in a user friendly publication where they can compare their work by simply flipping through this book or quietly studying the collection online. Typography is always an area where the genders of our judges battle it out. Males tend to all agree on similar styles and the females are usually opposite in their preferences - so we had some interesting battles when making the final decisions. Texture this year was a focus with several bottles winning their class on this quality. The Best Wine Bottle was a standout being a combination of a great story, beautiful glass, elegant finishes and outstanding typography applied with innovation. It is style and great texture all the way. A winner from every angle - literally! We all look forward to next year’s competition and have faith that the quality of design will continue to climb and become the fashion house of the industry. Lisa McGuigan

Australia’s Best Wine Bottle Trophy

Bleasdale Fortis et Estutus Tawny Port Langhorne Creek, SA

Judges comments: “Fortis Et Astutus” is the Potts’ family motto, translated to read “Bold and Crafty”. The design was inspired by the story of Bleadsdale’s founder, Frank Potts, who had sailed the world by the age of 21. The unique bottle design was modeled on the ships used by the Royal Navy at the time; short, squat, and a low-centre of gravity to prevent them from toppling over in rough seas. This story influenced not only the design of the glass, but also the selection of luxury cues; from the rope around the neck of the bottle, to the hardwood stopper cork, screen-printed typography, and the design of the sealing label. A fantastic concept that sits perfectly at the helm of the Bleadsdale wine portfolio. Class: Over 500 ton Dessert Wine Bottle Design: Parallax Design Website: www.bleasdale.com.au 5

Boutique Sparkling Wine Trophy

Sam Miranda - Prosecco NV King Valley, VIC

Judges comments: The judging team appreciated the simplicity and elegance of this package design and described it as “very up to date”. Compared with the other entries in this class they chose the bespoke bottle design and crown seal, which ties in perfectly with the faux metal label. King Valley branding on the glass shows regional unity and marketing strength. Boutique White Wine Trophy

Drink Wine Project 49 Chardonnay 2012 Beechworth, VIC

Judges comments: The gold and bronze foiling and delicate bold ‘49’ is outstanding. We noted the way the tiny gold bird on the design appears to fly from the design towards the back of the bottle encouraging the eye to travel around the single wrap around label. The intricate illustration of the vine is very beautiful, as is the use of the gold and bronze foiling. The label utilises an illustrative approach that—according to the designers—will change every vintage to reflect the unique growing conditions and the flavour notes associated with the wine. The label size is well suited to the size and shape of the bottle. Class: Boutique White Wine – Less than 500 ton. Bottle Design: MAUD Design Website: www.maud.com.au/project-49 9

RIDGE OF TEARS The face on this label personifies my great ancestors. ‘DRUIM NAN DEUR’ is Scottish Gaelic for ‘RIDGE OF TEARS’, the old Logan clan war cry. It’s an apt name for a wine that has aged this winemaker. Making the best possible shiraz is painstaking. Only the best soil at the right altitude and slope, restricting the vines to low yields, plunging the ferment by hand, basket pressing and oak mellowing. And that’s just the parts we can control. But now it’s bottled, the tears are happy ones. Let the ageing begin. PETER LOGAN WINEMAKER

Boutique Red Wine Trophy

Logan Wines Ridge of Tears Shiraz 2010 Orange, NSW

Judges comments: The image on the label invites you to find out more about the story and the wine. Good shelf appeal and a very evocative name. A true story balanced against an image with integrity. The paper and premium cap also illustrate quality. The image of an aged Peter Logan may suggest that the wine should be aged too and it also tells you that making wine in Orange, New South Wales is a tough task. You get the sense that there is a caring person behind this wine bottle. Overall extremely distinctive and memorable. Class: Boutique Red Wine - Less than 500 ton. Boutique Dessert Wine Trophy

Arthur Wines Ruby Slipper Fortified Red Wine Margaret River, Western Australia

Judges comments: A very eye-catching illustration of a fun and quirky roller skating character. The judges saw it as fresh and young, demonstrating a significant change from the traditional fortified bottle style. The colour scheme was given full credit plus the font choice and use of raised ink also contribute to the overall quality of the label. Class: Boutique Dessert Wine - Less than 500 ton. for quite an overall opulent look. The striking pewter coloured palette was carried from the label through to the bottle neck. The well known and simple standout logo of Peter Lehmann is a focal point on the label. The beautifully shaped bottle made this a stand out choice. Over 500 Ton White Wine Trophy

Taylors Wines Promised Land Moscato NV Clare Valley, South Australia

Judges comments: A clever use of printing straight onto the glass rather than a paper label allowing you to look straight through the opaque artwork into the bottle. The colour of the glass used helps to create the whole light and bright fluid feeling. The theme is carried over to the back of the bottle with the rather cute inclusion of the Taylors iconic seahorse swimming through the barcode. Classy on all levels and an excellent ‘mate’ in the Taylors stable. Class: White Wine - Over 500 Ton Bottle Design: The Collective Design Consultants Website: www.taylorswines.com.au 17

Over 500 Ton Red Wine Trophy

Chapel Hill Wines The Chosen Shiraz 2009 McLaren Vale, South Australia

Judges comments: The judges appreciated the innovative die cut holes, which correspond to the shape and location of each ‘chosen’ block within the Chapel Hill vineyard. The beautiful French Saver Glass bottle, the elegant use of white space, the hand-scribed signatures, and the use of a subtle matt copper foil stamp to match the capsule all added up to brand quality. This label has the right balance of luxury cues to convey the price point and positioning of this range. Overall a fantastic extension of the iconic Chapel Hill brand. Open Class Sparkling Wine Trophy

De Bortoli Wines Este Sparkling Vintage Cuvee 2006 Yarra Valley, Victoria

Judges comments: A striking eye-catcher that says quality. Contemporary and sophisticated a fabulous bottle shape with a simple and effective name and label which will easily withstand the pressure of refrigeration and the ice bucket. Very slick neck band, quality paper and font. The cable tie, while being a little hard to open (but aren’t all sparkling bottles?), is original and memorable. Bold, fun and distinctive! A good talking point for the table and could be interpreted as an international design– possibly influenced by the family’s Italian heritage. Saint Clair Wines Marlborough Sun Sauvignon Blanc 2012 Marlborough, New Zealand

Judges comments: The judges found this to be a fun, playful homage to traditional newspaper design. They got quite a chuckle out of the hilarious image of the two (censored) naked chaps running through the field on the front label! One judge turned the bottle around expecting to see the front view of the guys through the glass! A clever idea, brilliant typography, and a striking package design that’s sure to stand out on the liquor store shelves! House of Cards ‘The Royals’ Cabernet Sauvignon 2011 Margaret River, Western Australia

Judges comments: At first look this design is quality and reflects the expectation of a powerfully flavoursome wine – most likely part of the owners’ brief. The design is playful as it draws inspiration from the ‘royals’ featured in a standard deck of cards. The use of gold foil triggers another quality cue. The neck label drew excellent comment, the innovative die cut, and the main label which wraps around the bottle all combine into an eye catching combination. This bottle looks outstanding from any angle, and it is sure to stand out in the crowd as tall, strong and regal! 2012 - Sauvignon Blanc Ty Fitzgerald Feature Winewriter

The combination of high sunshine hours and exceptionally good quality wines have caused quite a stir recently in the Marlborough region. An unusual occurrence has begun appearing in Several witnesses have reported seeing fully-grown adults streaking, or more commonly referred to by the locals as engaging in ‘nudie runs’. Experts agree that a return to our infant roots by the dishevelling of clothes and adorning of one’s birthday suit can provide hours of entertainment. It is however advised that discretion is used when venturing out in the buff as it could mean ending up on the wrong side of the law.
