EDITOR’S LETTER

Celebrating 25 years of Boulevard  By susan lundy

A

s Boulevard celebrates its 25th anniversary, I’m trying to wrap my mind around the fact that 1990 was a full 25 years ago. It seems like yesterday, although half my life has occurred since. In the late spring of that year I was preparing to profess eternal love at my first wedding, and getting ready for it by collecting carcinogens in a tanning salon. I drove an old-butbeloved Volvo station wagon; wore dress suits with enormous shoulder pads and used a curling iron to flip hair away from my face. Two of the most important people in my life — my daughters — weren’t born; in fact, they weren’t even a concept. As Boulevard founder Evelyn Butler nurtured the magazine in the early 1990s, I birthed my own babies, disappearing into the abyss of those wonderful years. I can’t recite lyrics or name trendy bands of the early 1990s; I have no idea which hockey teams were hot; and I’m even hesitant to talk about world events in those years. It was all about babies. Happily, Boulevard survived (unlike my first marriage) and flourished over the past quarter century, giving us cause to celebrate in this special edition. A perfect fit for this celebratory issue is our annual Photos By competition, which unfolds in all its glory pages 20-25. Congratulations to all our finalists. Victoria is certainly bursting with excellent photographers. Other nods to Boulevard’s 25th, includes Hot Properties writer Carolyn Heiman’s “Hottest of the Hot” piece (page 26), in which she revisits some of the many stunning homes she has featured over the years. Tess van Straaten interviews one of Boulevard’s longtime advertisers — Rus Collins of Zebra Design — and food writer Cinda Chavich adds a celebratory flavour with a feature on cakes.

But the most fun for us was Lia Crowe’s portrait piece. Lia did an outstanding job of bringing Boulevard’s writers and photographers out from behind their computers and cameras and into the limelight. Freelancers don’t work together in an office, and although we try to meet each month, most work in isolation. For the portraits, Lia paired people who had threads of connection — for example, Cinda Chavich, food writer, was shot with Don Denton, food photographer — and placed them in settings that further added to their stories. TV personalities Tess van Straaten and Amy McGeachy were photographed at CHEK TV, Front Row arts writer Robert Moyes posed in the glorious Alix Goolden Performance Hall, and Tom Hawthorn and I (with our mutual backgrounds in journalism) met at a bar, where — between Lia’s camera snaps — we commiserated about the decline of the fourth estate as we know it. Adding to fun of the photo shoots was the collection of information — a process for me that was filled with exclamation marks: Lia’s real name is Kamalia Mahesa Crowe! Carolyn met her husband in a car accident! Vince originally studied to be a chef! Amusingly, almost every single person named “chocolate” as one of his or her guilty pleasures. I’d like to thank all the people who work so hard to put out Boulevard each month. In addition to the truly wonderful contributors, there are those working behind the scenes, such as advertising director Janet Gairdner, longtime advertising consultant Pat Brindle, and the creative people who put it all together, Lily Chan and Lorianne Koch. We hope you have as much fun reading this edition of Boulevard as we had creating it. And here’s to the next 25 years (perhaps without shoulder pads and tanning salons).

“Lia did an outstanding job of bringing Boulevard contributers out from behind their computers and cameras and into the limelight.”

Cathie, what’s your passion? Travel, cooking (and eating) reading and photographing anything that artistically inspires me; renovation and interior design. Hobbies: When I'm not working, I'm spending time with family and good friends or hitting the gym or a yoga class. I have two adorable kids who keep life moving fast. What does “style” mean to you? Style to me is comfort with a twist. Who rocks your world? should say my husband but professionally speaking I'll say Mario Testino. Bucket list: Eat and drink my way through Europe — Part Two; go camping in Iceland; become fluent in Spanish Guilty pleasure: Trader Joe's chocolate covered peanut butter pretzels. I stock up when I can. Memorable moment on the job? Two enthusiastic skinny dippers who photo-bombed our fashion shoot on the Dallas Road waterfront. Random: I love to sing really loud while I drive. When coerced, I can still do some pretty cool gymnastics on the uneven bars. We did an 18 month stint living in a small surf town in Mexico with our young kids a few years back.

favourite tool of expression and one of the artistic mediums that most inspires me. Hobbies? Studying dance, writing alone or with my writing group, making photographs. Also, I’m out as much as possible in nature with my family … usually taking their picture. What does “style” mean to you? Good style to me is life force expressed visually with a healthy side of unapologetic mojo. Who rocks your world? Annie Leibovitz Bucket list? Live in Paris again, but this time with my daughters. Travel to Iceland. Study Flamenco in Spain again. Memorable moment on the job? Photographing the Boulevard contributors this month was a total honour and definitely takes "the cake" as the most memorable moment on the job. What an incredibly talented, wise, kind and fun group of people. They are used to being the storytellers, so actually being the story this month was definitely outside of the comfort zone. Random: 1. I’ve never eaten red meat in my entire life, except by accident. 2. There was a brief period in my life when I played in a Greek band. 3. I shoot film. Not because I think it’s cool, it’s just what I know. 4. My full legal name is Kamalia Mahesa Crowe.

O

Amy, what’s your day job? I own McGeachy Media and Design. I have been in the industry for over 11 years, and specialize in kitchen and bath design. I also co-produce local TV shows with CHEK TV. What’s your passion? I love working with people, getting them fired up and motivated, whether it is to redesign their space and make it something that they love coming home to, or building new ideas and visions for an ever-changing entertainment industry. Hobbies? I like spending time with friends and family. I spend as much time as I can with my little furry buddy Milo, walking on the beaches and in the parks. He is my 4-year-old terrier. What does “style” mean to you? Style is something different to everyone. It is a PU B LIS H I N G way to express yourself through many mediums. My job has nothing to do with my own style, but is more to help people discover theirs. Who rocks your world? Gray! I LOVE the shade gray. Guilty pleasure? Definitely good chocolate and design magazines. Memorable moment on the job? The reaction from the Threshold Housing Society last year during the big reveal of the Herowork Radical Renovation. We volunteered to recreate suites that would house youth at risk. Nothing will beat the feeling of helping them, and illustrating how special they are. Random: I grew up on Vancouver Island, our home was on Sproat Lake, so many of my summers were spent on the dock, swimming or boating. It's still one of my happy places.

Tess, what’s your day job? I'm a news anchor and

F

reporter at CHEK News and I've worked in print and TV journalism for more than 18 years. What’s your passion? I love to ask questions and I have a passion for storytelling. Travel, both near and far, is also a great passion and I think it's important to expose my children to different cultures, places and people. What does “style” mean to you? For me, style is about putting your best foot forward and feeling good in what you're wearing. Just because something is trendy doesn't mean you should wear it. You have to find what works for you and develop your own personal style. Who rocks your world? My sons, Tyler and Tate. They are my greatest contribution to this planet and they've truly taught me what's important in life. Bucket list? A goal I've had since I was a child is to go to 100 countries and all seven continents. So far I'm at six continents (all but Antarctica) and 52 countries. Guilty pleasure? Good chocolate, wine, and reading magazines — preferably all at the same time! Memorable moment on the job? I've had some incredible experiences, from meeting the Queen of England and interviewing Prince Phillip to flying a World War II plane, but the most memorable moment was being sent to Churchill, Manitoba, to cover the impact climate change is having on polar bears. It was truly magical to see polar bears walking across the tundra. Random: 1. I'm 4th generation Victorian (and my oldest son is the 5th generation in my family to go to Central Middle School!). I started figure skating after the Calgary Olympics and dreamed of one day going to the Olympics. 3. My youngest son was born in Australia so we call him our “Quasi Aussie.”

Cinda, what’s your day job? I’m a full-time freelance journalist specializing in food and travel. I have also written several best-selling cookbooks. What’s your passion? Food and wine, chefs, farmers, sustainable and green living, and local artisans that care about their work and the planet. Hobbies? I like to ride my bike and walk

My husband, Delbert. Guilty PU B LIS H I N G pleasure? Popcorn, potato chips, G&T’s Memorable moments on the job? Went to China with a Canadian bear expert from Vancouver Island to search for pandas in the wild and though it was a challenging trip, seeing one of the last wild pandas in the world was truly amazing. Travelled on the historic Maple Leaf schooner through the Gulf Islands on a Sails & Ales trip to learn about craft beer in BC, and went to Prague to explore the origins of Pilsner last year. Visited a hunting lodge in Scotland (twice) where Prince Andrew likes to stay and circumnavigated Newfoundland in a small cruise ship.

What does “style” mean to you? Style, in the broadest sense, is the foundational DNA for everything we feel and stand for. The “style” of our homes, work and public spaces ignite feelings even though we may not realize it. The style of our clothing can affect our moods and sense of well being. Even the style of someone’s language can strike deep in the heart. Bucket list? Hike into Skoki Lodge. Return to Africa. Re-read some great classics like Doctor Zhivago, The Sun Also Rises, Tess of the D’Ubervilles. This list is subject to change! Guilty pleasure? A $55 tube of Guerlain lipstick in a mirrored case that makes me feel special every time I use it. Random: I find ikebana classes as relaxing as mediation; I still have my $1,800 road bike bought in 1979 and used to cycle the Jasper to Banff highway; I met my husband-to-be in a car crash.

Susan, what’s your day job? Writer, editor, mom to adult children. What’s your passion? My family and friends; beer and hockey. Hobbies? Road trips, travel, photography, reading fiction, watching hockey. I’m also a bit of a news and politics junkie. Who rocks your world? Danica and Sierra Lundy; Bruce, Dylan and Jade Cameron. Oh. And ACDC. Bucket list? See as many countries as possible; watch the Canucks win a Stanley Cup. Memorable moment on the job. Over a 30-year career, I’ve written some moving stories, but none as heartbreaking as “Lorna Living with Huntington’s Disease.” I cried as I wrote the story; but even more memorable, I met and interviewed Lorna’s brother … and married him six years later. Random things: 1. My travels have been as far flung as Russia, East Timor and Botswana. 2. I knew nothing about heritage apples, wrote a book about them, and now I know A LOT. 3. In 2011, I travelled with my man across the country in our ‘78 VW van. People our age thought we were nuts, but young people thought we were really cool.

Tom, what's your day job? Freelance scribe. What's your passion?

A bottle of red and my latest nonfiction purchase from Munro's Books. Memorable moment on the job? I'm a teenage cub reporter working the night desk at the Vancouver Sun. Sent to check out a “shots fired” call from the police scanner, I run up to the front entrance of a Richmond restaurant just as a man exits. I startle him, and he aims a handgun at me. Happily, the jittery plainclothes Mountie does not shoot. I never get inside, which turns out to be the bloody scene of a gangland shooting. Random: 1. Once spent 30 minutes alone with Deborah Harry of Blondie. In a hotel room. On her bed.
2. I'm an atheist who appreciates Mahalia Jackson's gospel singing.

On my very first professional job I realized after about 20 minutes that I was shooting without film in the camera. Fortunately, I was able to re-shoot most of what I missed and I never made that blunder again. Except, of course, in the reoccurring nightmares that I still have to this day. F

Photos By Boulevard’s annual Photos By contest drew a wealth of stunning images, covering a variety of themes and making the definitive statement: Victoria is home to some remarkable photographers. Selecting the finalists was tough, but the judges are thrilled with the winning images, which are revealed in the following pages In selecting their favourites, judges tried to include a range of themes and genres, from portraits and landscapes, to conceptual pieces and images that tell a story. After making the selections and then looking at the names, judges discovered they had selected two photos from two photographers — John Mattatal and John Richardson. Although we have only published one each of their winning photographs, the others can be found — with all the finalists’ images — on Boulevard’s Facebook page. In addition to the photographs selected as winners by the judges, The Readers’ Choice image is also revealed here. Congratulations to all our winners.

Johanne Hemond, 47, Esquimalt Taken at: Macaulay Point, Esquimalt Camera: Nikon D510 Description: Amanda Konn and I like to shoot together. She is a great model and I enjoy working with her. I also love Macaulay Point in Esquimalt, where, in this photo, the beauty of the landscape is well captured. Comments: I grew up in Montreal and have spent the last 14 years in this beautiful city we call Victoria. The sacred surroundings that Mother Nature graciously shares with us inspire me in both my photography and my painting. My work has been exhibited in Montreal, Victoria, New York and Singapore (www.solaceart.ca).

Nancy Dolan, 65, Fairfield Title: A Classic Uncovered #1 Taken at: Gorge Family Picnic, Canada Day Camera: Canon PowerShot S5 IS Description: This shot was waiting for me at the Gorge Canada Day Family Picnic a few years ago. My eyes lit up at my first glimpse of this beautiful specimen of a car. I love old classic cars, the more rust and weather beaten the better. But this old Dodge was so unique — totally covered in lichen and moss — even the windows were cloudy. I was shocked that it had actually been driven to the event! With only my point and shoot camera, I was in “car” heaven.

Doug Grant, 52, Victoria Name of photo: Trees Taken at: Tsawwassen Ferry Terminal CaMera: iPhone 5 Description: Puddle shot taken from a reflection of the wet pavement at the BC Ferry Terminal. Comments: I've been taking what I call “puddle shots” for just over a year now. I particularly like reflections and the natural “photoshop” filters provided by actual surroundings, such as asphalt, gravel and water. 21

John Mattatall, 57, Sooke Title: Fisherman’s Wharf Taken at: Fisherman’s Wharf in Victoria Camera: Nikon D200 Comments: My favourite time to take photos is early in the morning, in downtown Victoria. The old buildings are quite photogenic and have great character and texture. Another place I am drawn to is the ocean, photographing seascapes. Living on the island, with its beautiful scenery, provides me plenty of opportunity to do this. I belong to the Sooke Photo Club, which brings like-minded individuals together to share ideas and develop our skills as photographers.

John Richardson, 63, Oak Bay Title: Backyard Brawl Taken at: Oak Bay Camera: Canon 1DX DESCRIPTION: This photograph was taken in my neighbour’s backyard. I was interested in trying to capture smaller species in flight, which is extremely challenging. I was fortunate to get this photograph, even though they are slightly obscured by the branches. In general, I enjoy all types of photography from sports, musical performances, landscapes and wildlife.

photos BY Nathan Philps, 40, Fairfield Title: Wild West Coast Taken at: Clover Point Camera: Nikon D700 Comments: My wife and I live five minutes from Clover Point, and when the wind is blowing, we like to walk down to Dallas Road and watch the waves. With my DSLR in tow, and trying to keep as much salt-water spray off my lens as possible, I took a series of images of pounding surf, and soaring gulls. The sky was dark; the light was full of drama. Shooting wide @ 16mm, with the ocean crashing before me, I was soaked past my knees ....

Tom Gore, 69, North Saanich Title: In the Marais Taken at: Paris, France Camera: FUJIFILM X-Pro1 18-55mm f/2.8-4 Description: A street scene in Paris’ historic Marais, the old Jewish quarter that contrasts the old and the new. Comment: While most of my work involves complex and layered combinations of studio work and street photography, this picture is a piece of straight street work from an ongoing project in Paris. It was one of those heaven sent perfect moments of composition and contrast, showing a traditional older Jewish resident of the Marais and a hip young woman from the new culture that is overtaking the area.

Lise St. Gelais, Chemainus Title: Storm of Wild Daisies Taken at: Panorama Ridge Road, between Ladysmith and Chemainus Camera: Nikon D600 Description: Taken daisy level and upwards on a ridge, looking north at the coastal mountains and Gulf Islands from the east side of Vancouver Island. Comment: I have been passionate about photography since the age of 13, when my godmother gave me my first camera, a film Kodak Brownie.

photos BY

Jody Beck, 39, Fairfield Title: Rumon Taken at: Victoria Camera: Nikon D700 Description: This photo of my friend, Rumon Carter, holds significance in the fact that he encouraged me to participate in #100daysoffacingthecoast, an Instagram project that was a spin-off of #the100dayproject. The idea is that you do any action, but the same action, repeatedly, for 100 days and keep document of it. My take on this was to shoot portraits, and to learn about my subjects’ connections to our coast. Check out Rumon's projects at www. astateofwild.com.

Cindy Trytten, 53, Fairfield Title: Duck Zen Taken at: Government House, Victoria Camera: Nikon D5100 Description: This majestic mallard was standing in a yoga pose as the sun started to go down, casting a golden glow on the water at Government House. The light, the water and the posing duck all combined to capture a brief-but-beautiful moment in time. Comment: Photography has long been the most effective way that I know to connect to the “now” and truly be in the moment, so I often have my camera with me on walks with my dog through the neighbourhood. Of all of my recent photos, this one truly has the highest “smile” factor.

nniversaries are a time for reflection and celebration. Since this month marks my fourth anniversary of writing the Hot Properties feature in this publication, and it coincides with Boulevard’s 25th anniversary, it’s a chance to look back and salute some of my favourite rooms. Don’t for a moment think selection was easy work. I’ve had the pleasure of being a guest in a long list of remarkable homes. Singling out a handful has proven similar to picking a favourite child.

Stay home, travel far Style at a waterfront home riffs off of the owners’ Moroccan travels and sets an exotic tone. A cluster of seven Murano glass fixtures makes it clear this is no ordinary space. Yet it remains comfortable in its eclecticism. Even the purple sofa is a perfect fit.

Why buying quality matters A 1960s home was saved from itself by a notable architect who chose to retrofit it — complete with solar panels — to meet his living-green standards. The inside space flows easily from front to back and room to room. The Arconas French-leather furniture stands the test of time, fitting easily into its new environment and looking as current as it did in the 1960s.

When in Rome — or Port Renfrew for that matter If you’re building at the end of the civilized world, it makes sense to keep in sync with the surroundings. So a couple building a home in Port Renfrew gave a special nod to natural elements by deploying two cedar trunks as supporting pillars on the main floor, and two whale rib bones as door handles. There are no top cupboards in the kitchen to block the view, which would be all the way to Japan, if you could see that far,

A home where children play An active lifestyle is natural if you’re living in Ucluelet, but winter rains can keep kids indoors more than one might like. Several rooms in this West Coast home are unabashedly child friendly. A swing from the roof in the family room provides joyful hours of play, while just behind it, a small door leads to a tunnel that connects to the bedroom. Here, find a for-real climbing wall that allows youngsters to burn energy, while stimulating muscle development.

They strive to complete each project with the care their customers expect and deliver on their promises.

Accessibility rules A home designed for its quadriplegic owner avoids all the stereotypes of accessible homes. One has to look closely for the small details — lower counter heights, wider hallways, dryer and washer on a raised platform, and seamless and flush door and patio access — to realize a wheelchair-bound person lives here. Yes, there is an elevator hidden under a very contemporary open staircase.

30

No detail too small With its Charles Rennie Mackintoshinspired motifs in glass cabinetry drawers, and a rich built-in bar table with walnut and olive burl inlay, it’s evident that master craftsmen were at work in a kitchen inspired by tradition and built for real cooking and entertaining.

Looks can be deceiving The quaint exterior of a small house with a curled roof looks like a fairy tale home in which the Seven Dwarfs might have lived. Inside, the house is wrapped from floor to ceiling in rich, brown mahogany from Panama, Indonesia and Africa. A magnificent, custom-carved totem pole stands guard over the kitchen, which also features a soothing, saltwater aquarium that’s so heavy, special construction provisions had to be made before moving it in place.

Personal Real Estate Corporation

The Woman Behind the Picture… What made you decide to go into real estate? I was working at the CBC Head Office in Ottawa as a Strategic Planning Consultant and I wanted to do something more entrepreneurial. My husband-to- be, Len Chapple, was Director of the Montreal Olympics for the CBC and we agreed to move to Toronto. We got married in 1981 and he continued at the CBC, while I eventually quit and started with the real estate firm, Johnston and Daniel in Ontario.

What was your background? After graduating from Magee and UBC, I went to the Sorbonne to work on my PhD. in the Sociology of Mass Communications at the University of Paris. My parents were entertainers (my father, Dal Richards, is still leading his big band in Vancouver!) and we had had people such as Lena Horne to our house for parties. They knew that an international education was a valuable asset and wanted me to be exposed to everything possible. I remember my mother asking me as a child, if I would rather go to graduate school in France or Switzerland. They had high expectations! Were they happy with how things turned out? Oh yes, I know my father is proud of me. When I told him last month that I was number 18 out of nearly 7,000 RE/MAX Realtors in Western Canada he was thrilled! He is happy that I am doing something I adore, working for myself, and that I have unlimited possibilities, depending on how hard I work. I never want to retire! I am so pleased that my past clients are now referring their kids to me. They trust me to help their children as I did them. I have made friends with so many clients over the 24 years that I have sold real estate here. I feel honoured

What brought you to the west coast? Len and I are both originally from Vancouver. Len was consulting to the Commonwealth Games in Victoria and he said, “You really have to come and see this city — it’s great! I think it would be a great place to live.” So we came from Seattle, where we were living at the time, to see Victoria in 1990, and fell in love with it. We told our realtor, “We want to live in Oak Bay, we want waterfront, and we want to build a house.” Then, like a good realtor, she showed us in a gentle way, that we couldn’t afford any of those things! I have thought of her many times when I try to explain to people moving here that they can’t always get quite what they want for the price they expect in Victoria.

YEARS in business

to be a part of one of the biggest decisions of my clients’ lives, and I take the responsibility very seriously. The most important asset that we have as realtors, I believe, is our integrity. There have been so many changes in our industry over the years and there are many more things, now, from which to protect our clients — oil tanks, asbestos, aluminum wiring for example — and things to help our clients better understand, like strata depreciation reports. Real estate has become a legal maze through which one needs advice and guidance. What would you like to say in closing? I feel like my job is to help others see and love Victoria as much as I do. Whether they are first-time buyers purchasing their first condo, or a CEO transferring here from Toronto, I want them to help them feel just a little bit better about the city and about themselves. I love this city and I feel a social responsibility to give back to it. I am a member of the Oak Bay Rotary Club, the Victoria Executive Management Club and have just been appointed as a Director of the Victoria Symphony. I love music so this is such a good fit for me! We are so privileged to have an orchestra of the calibre of the Victoria Symphony here. Who would want to live anywhere else? 37

elling Real Estate for over 20 years has been absolutely amazing! In addition to watching my own personal growth, there’s the great satisfaction of helping my clients realize their personal goals and dreams. Calling beautiful Victoria my home has made it even more special. Growing up in a military family, I know the excitement and challenges that come with moving. My customer service is second to none! I will put all your needs first and foremost with great attention to detail. Listening to all your needs and wants helps me to achieve your goals and makes the buying or selling process so much more enjoyable! I have consistently been in the top 100 for Re/Max of Western Canada, awarded the High Standard of the Re/Max Chairman’s Club for high sales production and obtained the Re/ Max Ultimate Agent Training Program to optimize client contact. I served as a director for many years on the Vancouver Island Real Estate Board. I chaired the MLS, Technology and Quality of Life Committees. Prior to real estate, I owned and operated several businesses, including a ladies clothing shop and flower and gift stores. This has given me excellent administration, strong sales experience and good people skills. I have also staged many of my clients’ homes to be more saleable — but without spending money. My strong negotiating skills, together with creative problem solving, has given me the high success rate I have maintained throughout my career. This is truly my calling but only comes with hard work, dedication and respect to each and every client, no matter what their affordability is.

My first “realtor” experience with Karol Power started as a tour of potential homes for friends who would soon be returning from overseas. One of the homes viewed that day became mine. That was in 2002. Since then Karol has worked again with me and several of my friends and colleagues to help us achieve successful conclusions in our real estate transactions. At least a dozen of us at last count. Karol’s professionalism, her “Above and Beyond” work ethic, her astute understanding of the current market, her always patient explanations and support throughout the transaction process are why I have no hesitation in recommending Karol Power. Make her your realtor of choice. — Kathy mooney I’ve been building custom and patio homes in Campbell River for the past 11 years. It wasn’t until the last 5 years that I came across Karol Power. Karol brought forward many great qualities as a realtor. I found her to be very professional and a very strong asset to my company. If my houses weren’t selling as fast as she and I anticipated, she was quick to add additional advertising and do anything and everything to boost sales. Due to her re-location to Victoria, I’ve had to use another realtor. Even though she’s no longer my realtor I still have contact with her. She still sends statistics showing sales and pricing for Campbell River and gives me advice whenever I need it. I would highly recommend her to any homebuyer, seller and home builder. — nigel Van Hove, nVH Homes ltd. Professionalism, Integrity and Honesty make me a great Choice and Outstanding Agent! Getting You the Right price in the Least amount of time is my Goal. It will be my pleasure to help you find your new home, make an investment or move on. Let’s get together to discuss your next move or to do a Complimentary Market Evaluation of your Home.

TesTimonials from clienTs:

I have used the real estate services of Karol Power on a number of transactions over a 10-year period. While she is an absolute delight to work with, underneath that charming demeanor, lies a razor sharp brain attuned not only to the real estate market, but the economy in general, that has served me so well in any dealings I have had with her. She would be my “go to” salesperson in any real estate transaction. — Patrick stayner

People-focused real estate Real estate is about far more than buying and selling homes. Ultimately, it’s about people. “Buying and selling real estate is all about teamwork, and I treat my clients the way I would expect to be treated,” reflects Jeff Bishop, a nineyear veteran of the local real estate market. Entering his fifth year with DFH Real Estate – the last three as a top producer specializing in residential sales – Jeff calls upon a diverse background of work experience, travel and family connections to provide the best service to a wide spectrum of buyers and sellers. “I thoroughly enjoy being a broker of personal and business relationships,” Jeff says, crediting his team, including wife Jenny. “As my director of operations at work and mother of our three boys, I could not serve my clients without her support.”

HAVE your CAKE Visually stunning and divinely delicious  Text by CINDA CHAVICH

aking beautiful cakes is a true culinary art. It’s an art that requires patience and attention to detail, a clear understanding of food chemistry, and a steady hand with the pastry bag. It’s not something you can just slap together with the stuff in the fridge, like a curry or a pot of soup. A good grounding in technique is essential and there’s not a lot of room for freestyling when it comes to baking cakes. Careful measurements and (horrors!) even weighing ingredients create the best results. You must follow instructions, whether it’s when and how to combine ingredients, or the size and depth of the pans to use. This is why many great cooks are not great bakers. I’m one of them. I’ve always relied on the kindness of friends — friends who are great bakers — to give me the goods when it comes to workable, no-fail recipes for tall, tender, beautiful cakes. I had a few good cakes in my arsenal until I moved from “altitude” in Alberta to sea level here on the west coast. Now I’m facing a whole new round of experiments — and failures — to get things right. Victoria is home to a bevy of bakers. For example, Deb Cater of Cakes Etc custom-created the stunning cake featured on the cover of this edition of Boulevard. Here’s a company that has been turning out beautiful baked goods in this city for over 25 years. Today, I’ve come to the kitchen of a local pastry chef to learn a bit about baking in Victoria and, hopefully, to steal a simple, reliable recipe or two. Susannah Ruth Bryan is the talented baker behind the new Ruth & Dean cake company. A custom cake baker, she’s working out of a 55

commissary kitchen in a city school, turning out beautiful cakes to order and selling them to city restaurants, from Canoe Brewpub to Nourish. When you order petit fours from The London Chef, Susannah’s likely made them. She’s putting the finishing touches on an impressively tall, three-layer chocolate creation, slathered in a sheer coating of vanilla bean butter cream, when I arrive. Topped with a still life of fresh blooms from her garden, it’s a thing of beauty. Born in Victoria, she’s recently returned to the city from Vancouver with her husband Robert Dean Smith, a professional chef. Their new company is a dream that’s been incubating for several years. While she does make cakes for weddings, Susannah is on a mission to return the cake to our tables. “I want people to eat cake more often,” she says. “We should be having cake on Sunday with the family roast. Not just for big events.” Home bakers can be intimidated by baking cakes but Susannah says it’s simply a matter of learning a few basic recipes and techniques, and practicing. Like cooking, baking becomes intuitive, she says — no need to time or skewer cakes, you can tell when they’re ready by touch and smell. But there are a few tricks to make your baking better.

TRICKS OF THE BAKING TRADE

 Culinary artist Susannah Ruth Bryan. Photo by Cinda Chavich

• First, she says, get a simple kitchen scale and learn to bake by weight. If you have a favourite cake recipe, or a traditional recipe from your grandmother, take the time to convert it to weight and it will never fail again. It makes perfect sense — flour that is sifted onto a scale will be much lighter than flour that’s settled in the bag and scooped into a measuring cup. The difference in volume can be quite dramatic. • Start with the basics. Learn to make a basic pound cake, a good chocolate cake and a white cake. Then get creative with flavourings — different kinds of frostings and fillings — to switch it up to suit the mood. • Use the best ingredients. That means real unsalted butter, good quality chocolate

and Dutch process cocoa, Callebaut melting chocolate, fresh free-range eggs, fruit juices and pastry flour for white cakes, all-purpose for chocolate and pastry. • Take the time to beat the butter and sugar until it’s very fluffy and increased in volume (that’s air you’re beating into the mix) — a process that takes at least 15 minutes at medium high speed, she says. Then preheat the oven. Weigh and sift the dry ingredients into one bowl. Beat the wet ingredients in another. Make sure your butter and eggs are both at room temperature — if you add cold eggs to your perfectly creamed butter, it will split the mixture and deflate it. Add eggs one at a time, and whip until there’s no slick sheen left in the mixture before adding another. “That’s the only opportunity to get natural leavening into the cake,” she says, adding, “Temper everything [make sure ingredients are not cold, straight from the fridge] and use your mixer, it makes such a difference,” she says. “I bake all of my cakes at 325 F or 350 F — I prefer lower and longer — and always on the upper racks.” • Don’t use a skewer to test for doneness — use your nose, and learn what a cake smells like when it’s done. “The cake will pull away from the sides of the pan in the last 5-8 minutes and will spring back, like a rare steak,” she adds. • Equipment matters. All you need is a simple electric mixer and some good baking pans. Susannah always uses three round cake pans, with removable bottoms, to make three layers for her tall cakes. Grease the pans well, and divide the batter evenly, then swirl the batter in the pans to “break the seal around the edge” to allow the cakes to rise. • Remove the cakes from the pan immediately after they come out of the oven and invert cakes on a cooling

rack, so they cool evenly, stay fluffy, and don’t get soggy in the pan. A dense cake, like a bundt or a fudgy chocolate cake, can be cooled on a rack in the pan. • Make sure cakes are perfectly cool before you trim them. Susannah has a wire cake slicer, like a mini buck saw, and only trims after the cakes have been well chilled overnight in the refrigerator. Chill cakes again after filling and decorating. After frosting a cake with butter cream, a hair dryer can be used to heat the surface for a perfectly smooth finish. • Place cakes on a revolving pedestal to make frosting and decorating easier. Hold a flat metal scraper against the side of the cake as you turn to smooth the butter cream. Decorate with piped butter cream, sprinkles, dragée or fresh flowers. Colour frosting with beet juice (fuchsia pink), fresh herbs (flecks of green), caramel (tawny gold), berry juice or a tiny bit of chocolate (mauve). “Cake slices better cold but tastes better at room temperature,” she says, “so slice it and plate it right before you serve dinner.” And if this still seems daunting, you can always have your cake by ordering one from Ruth & Dean —or trying a slice at places like Canoe, Nourish or The London Chef. The hardest part will be deciding which of her beautiful cakes fit the bill — will it be deep chocolate slathered in milk chocolate frosting, Cloud 9 coconut cake, or fluffy lemon cake with lemon curd and vanilla bean butter cream?

Preheat the oven to 350 F. Thoroughly grease three 8-inch pans with removable bottoms. Into the bowl of a mixer, sift all the dry ingredients. With the whisk attachment turn the mixer on low and blend together. Meanwhile, into a large spouted container (like a measuring cup) put eggs and remaining wet ingredients. Whisk until the eggs are incorporated. In a steady stream, with the machine running, slowly pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients. Allow to fully blend with no dry chunks. Divide the batter evenly between the three cake pans. Bake for 35 to 45 minutes, until the tops are firm and springy, and the cakes have begun to pull away from the sides of the pan. Turn the cakes out immediately and cool on wire racks with air flow circulating all around the cake and the base removed. Once entirely cool, wrap in plastic wrap and chill until ready to trim, preferably overnight. Once entirely cool, level the cakes with a cake leveller or very sharp bread knife. Layer with buttercream icing and smooth the sides with a thin veil of icing. Chill for half an hour. Once chilled, the crumb coat is secure and you can cover with a fun icing technique, or simply spread more icing to cover. Decorate with seasonal hardy flowers or greens from your garden.

FROSTING Susannah shares this recipe for what she calls this “basic American frosting” — a sweet icing often used for birthday cakes.

HAWTHORN

Fashion fix found in Sports apparEl  By TOM HAWTHORN

S

ummer approaches, bringing with it new wardrobes. My morning ritual is no more complicated than deciding between jeans or short pants — one of the perks of working at home. Getting dressed at all is unnecessary, but merely an acknowledgement of not totally giving up on appearance. Clothes have never mattered much to me, a reflection of indifference more than antipathy. Which is not to say I wear T-shirts, or polyesters or (shiver) socks with sandals. I know enough (or, at least, have been told) not to do that. My closet holds an unremarkable collection of secondhand short-sleeved shirts. The preference for bare arms is not inherited, as my father never once in his life wore a short-sleeved shirt. He was a jive-dancing member of the Elvis generation ... for him, a short-sleeved shirt was a sign of Eisenhower conformity. A writer must record details accurately, so in describing a subject's clothing one learns to differentiate a houndstooth pattern from a gingham, a cutaway collar from an oxford button-down, a Balmoral boot (for walking in wet gorse) from a Chelsea boot (favoured by the likes of the Beatles). When not on reporting duty, the flood of fashions and styles courses around me with barely a notice. Thick magazines appearing on newsstands garner but a glance, while the arrival by mail of The New Yorker's annual fashion issue leaves me vaguely disappointed, suspecting the edition will have fewer articles than usual of interest. The one item of clothing about which I can be a fanatic is the sports uniform, whether it be hockey sweater, football pullover or soccer strip. Fans judge these with tongues as sharp as any found lining a catwalk. Colour schemes are debated, logos disassembled, typography evaluated. Much mockery ensues, and local designers are not immune. This is, after all, a city that has had as team logos a bivalve flexing a bicep (the Victoria Mussels professional baseball

team) and an angry chili pepper wielding a hockey stick (the Victoria Salsa junior hockey team). Most closely critiqued of all is the baseball uniform. The slow pace of the game offers many pauses, during which spectators debate the merits of caps and shirts and pants and even hose in a sport in which two famous clubs, the Red Sox and the White Sox, are named for stockings. The baseball season in Victoria opens this month when the HarbourCats resume play at Royal Athletic Park. One of their rivals, the Walla Walla Sweets from Washington State boasts an angry onion as a mascot. A current obsession of mine is authentic reproductions of baseball uniforms from the past. A Seattle company, Ebbets Field Flannels, produces historic minor-league uniforms from wools used before the advent of modern polyester uniforms. Its online catalogue is for me what IKEA is to the home renovator, Lee Valley is to the handyman, and Victoria's Secret is to the lingerie fetishist. Over the years, I've accumulated three jackets, more than a dozen caps and six jerseys, the most recent of which is a replica of one worn by the Victoria Bees in 1911. Made from grey wool flannel, the pullover jersey has a black Byron collar and the city's named spelled out in glorious Edwardian script. The matching cap is black with a stylized white V initial. David McDonald, of Oak Bay, owns the same jersey and cap. If you spot one of us at Royal Athletic Park taking in a ’Cats game this summer, come by and say hello. We'll tell you about outfielder Ten Million (his real name), who wore the same uniform more than a century ago. Heck, if seven more people get the uniform, we'll even field a team. Play ball!

was looking forward to finally visiting Dublin for many reasons, all of them good. Firstly, my wife learned English there 30 years ago and many of her memories of Europe were often centered in Dublin. Secondly, so much great English literature has emerged from Dublin, I felt as though I somehow knew the place. And thirdly, a quote from one of my favorite Dublin authors, James Joyce played in my mind. As Joyce said 100 years ago: “When you think that Dublin has been a capital for thousands of years, that it is the second city of the British Empire … that it is nearly three times as big as Venice, it seems strange that no artist has given it to the world.” Tourist track Sure, at the beginning of our trip,

we did some touristy things as we tried to relocate exactly in which district my wife had looked after her three wee Dubliner charges. We joined the tourist throngs at the Guinness Stout factory. We ate at the church, now a chic restaurant, where Arthur Guinness, the man who founded Guinness beer was married, and where author Sean O’Casey hung out. Georges Frederick Handel, whose Messiah was first performed in Dublin, used to come and play the organ at this church. Nearby, locals and visitors alike danced in the streets to street musicians, good and bad, as well as in the Temple Bar area where Bono used to busk. We saw a performance by the original crew of Riverdance, and the following day, the entire Riverdance crew — along with thousands of Irish

dance fans hailing from as far away as Uzbekistan, Serbia, Chile, Mexico and Japan — established a Guinness world record for the longest Riverdance line in history. Some 1,693 people from over 44 countries danced into history on the banks of the River Liffey, starting at the Samuel Beckett Bridge, making their way all the way down to the Sean O’Casey Bridge. In search of Dubliners Still, the city was different from what we imagined. In the middle of summer, in Dublin, so great is the influx of foreigners, one is often hard pressed to find an Irishman. That said, a sure way to meet Dubliners is to visit the Little Museum of Dublin. Here, guides give a short talk (29 minutes to cover 100 years) on the social history of 20th Century

a copy of the book about to be read and eventually a cup of tea. On our visit, one person chose a short story from Dubliners and read the first page out loud before ceding his place to the next reader. The effect was magical, like some kind of solemn, intense, one-voiced tribute to Joyce — all readers concentrated on reading their best, including several whose first language was not English. Afterwards, one man from Brooklyn stated he had garnered new insights into the stories we read, although he’d read it silently some 20 times. We sipped our Irish tea and waited as someone else chose a second short story. The man behind the counter, P.J. Murphy, a local volunteer, put it most distinctly, saying, “James Joyce is meant to be read out loud.” Mr. Murphy went on to mention that a reference to

Dublin. I immediately liked this place upon entering. There is nothing stuffy about it, although it is located in a magnificent Georgian townhouse on the somewhat highend St. Stephen’s Green. At the museum, you can meet with a Dubliner volunteer, a local who invites you out for a cup of tea, just to talk and chat about Dublin. We met an interesting lad named Mark, who truly loves his city. As for the many foreigners now working here, he simply stated, “they are Dubliners now.” This feeling of belonging seems to be the glue holding the city together. Locals are among the visitors that the Little Museum of Dublin actually courts, for as Mark explained, “we want to hear the stories of Dubliners.” Sweny's Old World Pharmacy Not far from the museum we joined other visitors for readings of James Joyce’s book Dubliners, held at the pharmacy that figures prominently in his book Ulysses. Swenys Old World Pharmacy is found near the old Finn Hotel where Joyce met his future wife Nora Barnacle. It is at this location every June 16 (Bloomsday), that Joyce lovers worldwide congregate to celebrate Joyce’s work Ullyses. At Sweny's, Joyce admirers pay a small fee and are given a comfy, leather seat behind the counter. They are provided 66

singing in the story The Boarding House had triggered a memory of his spinster aunts who had the habit of singing after family dinners. They sang with great drama, eyes closed, during songs that sometimes went on for 30 versus. Eyes closed, they were unaware that the younger relatives often snuck out during the after dinner performance only to return before the song ended. No one left during our reading. It is amazing what simple joy a reading can elicit. A one-hour reading of Joyce’s work had finally connected us to his city. We never did find the spot where

my wife had worked 30 years previous. It didn’t seem to matter anymore, as we had discovered the real thing.

e’s one of Victoria’s most famous home designers, but Rus Collins of the iconic and award-winning Zebra Group never went to design school. “I’ve had no formal training,” Collins admits. “I’ve just learned on the job and when a huge opportunity came along years ago, I took it.” At the time, Collins was working in construction doing everything from labouring and framing to roofing and siding for a friend’s company. When his friend — designer/builder Gordon Mills — decided to sell the company, Collins went from being a technician to a designer overnight. “The new owner wasn’t a designer or a draftsman, so I jumped in and it was a big jump,” the 51-yearold says. “It took a lot of hard work and believing in myself that I could do it.” All that hands-on construction experience combined with the drafting skills he’d learned in junior high school helped Collins quickly learn the basics in his new role as designer. “If you understand how the walls come together and how a house is built and all the little things like trim and casing and how wide a hallway should be, it makes it that much easier to draw plans,” says Collins. It didn’t take long for Collins to venture out on his own for a couple of years before partnering up with Mills to form Zebra Design almost a quarter of a century ago. The name Zebra ended up being a stroke of marketing genius — distinctive and instantly recognizable. “Gordon had taken a marketing course and they said to pick a name from either the beginning of the phone book or the end, so we had to have a name beginning with either an A or Z,” explains Collins, who bought out Mills in the company’s infancy. “We came up with Zebra because even though zebras look the same, they’re not — they’re all unique and have different stripes — and all of our clients are unique and different.” Over the years, Zebra’s done hundreds of projects — from new single family homes and townhouses developments to kitchen renovations and luxury on a grand scale. The cache of the Zebra name quickly

ELASH_9024_ELASH_resize_X1a.pdf

became a selling feature, used to market properties and get potential buyers in the door. “Realtors have used us in their advertising over the years, which has really contributed to our success,” says Collins. “We’ve been able to grow the business without having to market ourselves as much as other companies do.” Now one of the most sought-after design firms in Victoria, Zebra expanded a few years ago to include interior design and construction. The Oak Bay-based company averages about 60 projects a year and Collins says the most important thing he’s learned is to really listen to his clients. “It’s important to learn who you’re working with and what their needs are, even if they may not be able to tell you up front what they want,” he says. “Part of it is figuring out what will work for them and really paying attention to what they’re saying.” On the flip side, Collins has learned that the biggest mistake clients make is listening to too many people. Friends and family often want to give feedback or renovation advice, but all that input can be problematic and even slow projects down. “Everyone has an opinion but not everyone’s opinion is valid because you never know where someone is coming from — and they don’t have to live in the house,” Collins points out. “You have to trust what your designer is telling you because we deal with this every day. And you have to trust yourself because you know how you live; too much input makes people second-guess themselves.” Over the years, Collins says he’s learned to trust his instincts and when it comes to business, he admits his biggest mistake has been trying to do too much when the market is booming. “You really have to pick your jobs when things are busy and not do every single thing that comes in your door because you can’t do them all well,” says Collins. “It’s important in this business to do quality work, and if things are out of control, you can’t control quality.” Quality and attention to detail are things Zebra has become known for and now, almost 25 years on, Collins has no intention of changing his work ethic. “Designing is so rewarding because when you finish a house, you can actually walk through it and know people enjoy living in it. And that’s a great feeling. That’s probably the best part, and at some point, these houses will outlast me so it’s a bit of a legacy as well.”

THE VIVID HUES OF CANADIANA With roots in Victoria’s punk music scene and tattoo parlours, painter Timothy Hoey eventually made an interesting shift into abstract art, selling in galleries in BC and Alberta. But when an offhand Boxing Day doodle eight years ago became a naïve portrait of Pierre Trudeau, rendered in hues based on a Hudson’s Bay blanket, Hoey unexpectedly found a new career as a paintbrushwielding nostalgist, one whose subject was Canadiana most colourful. There was an instant market for Hoey’s delightfully kitschy canvases, vivid images of everything from Peter Mansbridge, Nellie McClung, and Rocket Richard to Mounties, moose and Hawkins Cheezies. Framed with sections of hockey sticks, these iconic and shamelessly patriotic paintings soon eclipsed his abstract canvases. Hoey estimates he has done nearly 2,000 of 72

these very affordable works, many of which are sold over the Internet to expats hungry for a reminder of home. Several years ago, Hoey started showcasing these works on Canada Day, turning it into a family-friendly celebration complete with identifiably Canadian pop and snacks. His “O-Canada Portage Show” events have latterly gone on the road — most notably to London in 2013, when he was invited to display his work outside of Canada House in Trafalgar Square on July 1. But he’s “going local” this year, with elaborate plans at Phillip’s Brewery. Starting June 4, there will be a week’s run of Victoria-centric nostalgia, with subjects ranging from now-vanished 24-hour diners to famed panhandler Odd Job. The “O-Canada” paintings go up on June 10, culminating in a big show and party — and charity fundraiser — on Canada’s birthday. The shows are at 2010 Government St., beginning June 4. Nearly 30 years ago, the Eine Kleine Summer Music Festival began, presenting a month-long series of chamber music performances every Sunday out in the bucolic beauty of the Saanich Peninsula. Recently expanded to include a pair of repeat concerts on two Saturdays at Muse Winery, Eine Kleine is one of Victoria’s musical delights — for audience and performers alike. Programming will range from Stravinsky’s Suite Italienne and Tchaikovsky’s Piano Trio in A minor, Op. 50 to the Shostakovich Quintet for Piano and Strings. One of this year’s special guests is Richard Roberts, concertmaster of the Montreal Symphony Orchestra. And of particular interest is a rare appearance by legendary bassist Gary Karr, who retired over a decade ago and is making his Eine Kleine debut with a program that includes Grieg’s Sonata in A minor, Op. 36. All four performances occur at the First Unitarian Church, with two repeats at Muse Winery’s Bacchus Room in Deep Cove. “It’s a big hall that seats 150 and is acoustically really nice,” says cellist Laura Backstrom. “The wine cellar is underneath and you can see the vineyards out the windows,” she adds. “Plus there’s no traffic and it’s very peaceful … I love it.” Performances are June 7, 13-14, 21, 27-28 at either the Unitarian Church (5575 West Saanich) or Muse Winery (11195 Chalet Road). For information, see their website; for tickets, leave a voicemail at 250-413-3134.

To BEE OR NOT TO BEE With Hamlet as its whimsical inspiration, the play Humble Boy manages to be both hilarious and thoughtful. And then there’s that large beehive dominating the stage … “I love the script — it’s funny, poignant and beautifully layered,” says Langham Court veteran Angela Henry, who is co-directing Humble with Montgomery Bjornson. Set in a garden in the Cotswolds, the play has a troubled protagonist: Felix Humble, a physicist brooding about the recent death of his father and his mother’s too-quick romancing of a neighbour. As the bewildered Felix seeks solace in the lovely garden where his father tended his bees, the play explores the gap between reality and our perception of it. According to Henry, the duality of the play is embodied by the super-smart Felix, who delves into postEinsteinian string theory to grapple with the meaning of the universe but has lost a human connection with what is right in front of him. “The struggle of the characters to understand their own lives is comic gold,” says Henry. “But the play’s other levels of meaning slowly rise through the comedy.” Running from June 10-27 at Langham Court. A PAINTER’S LIFE Scottish illustrator and commercial artist Jock Macdonald moved to Vancouver in 1926, where he began a two-year stint with the faculty of the Vancouver School of Decorative and Applied Arts. But friendships with Group of Seven giants Frederick Varley and, later, Lawren Harris inspired him to become a serious artist — one destined to evolve into a significant painter instrumental in pushing Canada into an understanding of abstract art. By the 1930s, Macdonald had begun his first semi-abstract works; these were soon followed by paintings heavily influenced by Surrealism. By the 1940s, Macdonald was

firmly established in Toronto, a respected teacher at the Ontario College of Art and, by 1953, a cofounder of Painters Eleven. Affiliated with many artist societies, Macdonald remained enormously influential until his death in 1960. “He’s one of Canada’s most important artists, maybe not so much because of his paintings, but for how he introduced abstract art to Canada,” says Michelle Jacques, chief curator of the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria. Macdonald was an inspired artist who made a fascinating progression from landscape painter to visionary abstract expressionist. The arc of that career is explored in Evolving Form, his first major retrospective in over 30 years. “The show reveals very clearly the process of someone struggling to find his own artistic language,” says Jacques, who adds that to see a oncecommercial artist plunging into something much deeper isn’t that common. ” Running from June 13 to September 7. SILVER ANNIVERSARY

Ad a h

for a golden magazine — Boulevard celebrates 25 years  by SUSAN LUNDY

A

s Boulevard Magazine set out to celebrate the esteemed milestone of 25 years, I brought home a stack of early 1990s editions and happily perused their pages. Immediately, I was reminded that much has changed over the past quarter century. In the old editions — printed with cutting edge design on high-quality newsprint — stories and advertisements feature photographs of women with startling, featherfringed hair, wearing boulder-sized shoulders pads, and men with mullets and bushy mustaches. As I reflected on these old editions, I happened to speak with longtime Victoria realtor and Boulevard advertiser Dallas Chapple, who further reminded me how much has changed. In 1990, she said, the average real estate price in the city was $179, 149, compared to $609,342 in 2014. Technological changes of course are most staggering, and early Boulevard's list long-forgotten “typesetters” in the credits. In the 1996 February/March edition, the magazine proudly announces: “Boulevard has joined the Information Superhighway by opening a Home Page on the Internet.” The story goes on to explain how to “access and use the Internet,” helpfully adding, “you do not have to be a computer expert to browse the Internet. Easy prompting on the screen leads you to the sites you choose.”

While the magazine itself has undergone dramatic changes — newsprint to glossy, arts focus to lifestyles — some things remain the same. Photographer Gary McKinstry, who still photographs Boulevard’s Hot Properties, has been with the magazine for all 25 years, shooting feature photos in addition to homes. Fellow Hot Properties photographer, Vince Klassen is not far behind, clocking 23 years with Boulevard. The Hot Properties column itself has been around since the early years, as has Front Row. Current Front Row writer Robert Moyes has penned the arts and entertainment column for 20 of those 25 years. And in 1993, Photos By was already referred to as an “annual tribute to local photographers.” Boulevard was founded in 1990, published bi-monthly by Evelyn Butler. Initially, it focused on arts, shifting to lifestyles — adding food, homes and people — a few years later. Boulevard Lifestyles Inc., a company owned by John Simmons, acquired the magazine in 2008. During Simmons’ five-year ownership, the magazine increased its publishing calendar to monthly and “established a foothold in custom publications including projects for United Way of Greater Victoria, Victoria Foundation and 79

Celebrating Island artists Tucked into Mattick’s Farm is one of the region’s most charming galleries – a bright, inviting space with an ever-changing line-up of talented local artists. “We are passionate about supporting local artists and artisans from Victoria and Vancouver Island and with a different artist featured every month, there’s always something new to discover, see and love,” says owner Dawn Casson. Since purchasing the gallery two years ago, Dawn has embraced the opportunity to discover new artists working in paint, clay, glass, wood, metal, mixed media and jewellery. “Watching them blossom and grow professionally and personally is so exciting to see,” she says. “At the same time, I love helping our clients discover that perfect piece of art for their home, or a gift for that someone special – the rewards of beautiful art are timeless.”

Sharing the best of BC Wines Now in her 18th year of purveying the best of BC Estate wines at her VQA Wine Shop at Mattick’s Farm, proprietor Beth Crawford looks back and is proud of the accomplishment. “It is amazing how much the industry has grown in such a relatively short amount of time.” Currently there are approximately 90 wineries represented in this store, from large Estate wineries to boutique. Every week new wines come through the door and onto their shelves. “My team and BC’s world-class wines are what make this business such a success; we enjoy sharing our love of the vine with wine geeks and novices alike. I believe our customer service sets us apart – I have an amazing and knowledgeable staff,” Beth says. “We sum up our customer service this way...‘Knowledgeable, yet not pretentious... Approachable with a hint of sass’!” Put very simply, wine should be fun!

The beauty of 100 mile design This home-show display bathroom features the design philosophy called 100 Mile Design. JC Scott eco Design Associates brings these principles to every project, whatever style or budget. Client needs and health, local materials and local suppliers, timeless quality, functionality, lifecycle costing and durability all are considered. First and foremost, we use no toxins in the materials and finishes selected for projects or sold from our store. This may seem simple but if you care about the quality of living you can enjoy in your home, you may want to call the studio for a consultation or come to the store. Vancouver Island marble and slate, sustainably sourced wood, natural light, energy efficient appliances and fixtures are what are considered as first options. JC Scott has been designing award winning homes and restaurants, pubs and resorts from Chinatown studios for over three decades, always with an eye to eco solutions and a focus on beauty and timeless quality. Ideal clients are creative, they enjoy life on the West Coast, they engage in and appreciate the arts and nature, and they are open to new ways of living. It’s a designer’s role to show people new ways of living and working in their space either through renovation or new home designs.

Astrid & Erin Frayne Relax the Back

Expert help for your back health By educating clients on how to achieve healthy postures in all their activities, the Relax the Back team helps people change their mindset and move forward in how they sleep, sit, work and move. The first step is a 24-hour review of your environment. When does g in at pain increase or decrease? What are YEARS in business you sitting on or sleeping in? Where do you spend the most time? Are surfaces too hard or too soft? Not the right shape? Armed with the information, they can then recommend the most beneficial, long-lasting and highquality products that can help correct existing problems and help prevent others from developing. Key to their skill in finding the right products for their clients’ unique needs is working closely with doctors and health care professionals. At the same time, they have worked closely with same manufacturers for 19 years to provide reliable product solutions. The results can be nothing short of remarkable. “After 19 years, it’s been really rewarding to hear stories from long-time and new customers about how life-changing our products have been for them,” Astrid reflects. Having experienced back challenges herself, she understands people’s relief when they find products that work. “It shows on their face immediately. They’ve been afraid this is where their life ends. We’re here to show them a different future.” r

19

C e l eb

When it comes to maintaining a healthy back – or healing an injured one – it’s essential to listen to what your body is saying. Helping clients decipher those messages is where the experts at Relax the Back excel. “We like that our store is experiential and hands-on – customers are Astrid & Erin Frayne fully educated and encouraged to try products in a variety of ways,” explains Astrid Frayne, who opened Relax the Back in Victoria nearly two decades ago. Astrid, daughter Erin and their skilled, knowledgeable staff encourage visitors to try the store’s various pillows and mattresses, sit in the zero-gravity chairs, or target trouble spots with specialized tools that ease knots and sore muscles. Because each person is unique, a personalized approach is imperative. For those with neck discomfort or trouble sleeping, for example, a cervical pillow fitting will identify the shape, firmness and material to generate that sense of release and comfort. Various foam wedges and supports encourage proper alignment in the hips and back, easing nighttime discomfort and allowing you to wake up refreshed. “Finding the right solution for an individual means taking an individual approach, and that means trying products on for size to find what works for you,” Erin notes.

Bringing smiles one flower at a time Growing up in Zimbabwe, Jane Travis dreamed of being a florist. Her dream came true five years ago when she purchased Petals Plus Florist. Jane reflects, “Melding creativity with the natural art form of flowers, to design bouquets and arrangements that brighten people’s day is so rewarding.” Crediting her talented team, their dedication shows – “We treat every order as if it were going to our own family.” Conveying the feelings of our customers to the recipient is an essential aspect of our business. The key is listening to their customers. “With sympathy arrangements, for example, the word encompasses so much – sympathy for someone who has lost their job, is feeling ill, just having a rough day, or grieving for a loved one. Reaching out with a single flower or a bouquet to say, ‘I am here and am thinking about you’ can make such a difference.”

Not only is the quality of life exceptional, but few firms like Georgian Capital exist in this marketplace. Most portfolios are managed by large banks and brokers – we are clearly different than both. The potential for our firm is exceptional, as we build for the long term.

YEARS in business

For CGA Peggy Yelland, a primary goal is to maximize clients’ tax savings. A thorough knowledge of Canadian tax law and a determined attitude are what are needed. “Many details of a business or a client’s personal life must often be considered in order to take full advantage and produce the best possible result”. With a special focus on working with the construction industry, Peggy, her two seasoned bookkeepers and three accounting students – two of whom earn their CGA designations this year – believe in taking a personal approach. “We treat our clients like friends and we consider the affect of any decisions on their entire lives,” says Peggy, a CGA since 1998. “We also pride ourselves in helping clients in difficulty and once we’ve resolved past problems, we endeavor to ensure their future is problem-free.”

SECRETS & LIVES privilege to be asked to provide live commentary on TV and radio.

Your work in public opinion incorporates social media monitoring. How does this work? The polling business is facing a crisis of confidence brought on by numerous challenges: falling response rates, the increasing use of online panels and the use of push button automated dialers to try to predict outcomes. Polls often fail to measure the nuances we can pick up with via social media monitoring, and that's why in 2013 we were able to predict the Liberals would come back to beat the NDP, and that Christy Clark would lose her seat. We now integrate social media feedback with our polling data to help predict shifts in momentum.

As a new member of the Royal McPherson Theatre Society, what do you bring to that table? I was honoured to run for the RMTS board, an organization that does so much to facilitate the cultural life of Victoria. I hope to bring my experience working on other arts and cultural initiatives to the RMTS board, along with an understanding of media and political issues.

You’re also a musician. Tell us about your career?

BRUCE CAMERON

Pollster and political analyst

Hello, Bruce Cameron. Where are you from and how did you get to Victoria? I grew up in the east end of Toronto, and moved west in 1989 to head up the Angus Reid Group offices (a national polling firm). Over the past few decades I visited the west coast often. My sister and my daughter both live on Salt Spring, where I met my wife. After spending 25 years in Calgary, I moved further west; although I still travel frequently back to Alberta as president of my company, Return on Insight.

You were recently featured as the CBC National News political panelist for the Alberta election. Why you? I have been commenting on and measuring opinion for elections for CBC for over a decade, combining my knowledge of polling and social media monitoring with political analysis. The CBC elections team is the best in the business, so it’s a 98

Yes, I currently play drums in a band called ThruFare, and I love it. I started out years ago as a snare drummer in a Navy band. Later, at Queens University, I was elected drum major, heading up the 135-member band. I’ve played in many rock bands since then.

What do you love most about Victoria? The weather, of course, and the incredible flowers that seem to burst to life early in the new year; but increasingly, the vibrancy of downtown and how the city feels like it is getting younger in its activities and attitudes.

Where do you turn to for advice? First and foremost, my wise and witty wife, plus a group of friends with so many different perspectives — some who have known me for over 40 years, others who I have recently met.

What has life taught you? A close friend and former business partner recently passed away unexpectedly, and it came as such a shock. But he lived life fully, always smiling and laughing, lifting the spirits of those around him, even in dark times. That is true wisdom and a real gift, and I want to do what I can to remain upbeat and light a spark for all the people and causes I love.

Is there anything else we should know about Bruce Cameron? Case in point about my enduring optimism (some would call it delusion) is my love of the Toronto Maple Leafs. Despite their futility, hope springs eternal (at least in October anyways!).
