Happy New Year and Happy 20th PWH® Wow – where does the time go! Not only are we all gearing up for another year serving this great industry, but we are also looking forward to celebrating the 20th anniversary of PWH® in 2024. That is right, for 20 years PWH® has been helping women become leaders and our industry become more inclusive! We have twenty years of history that we are proud to call our own, helping women lead and succeed in the healthcare industry. Reflecting on 20 years of PWH®, we have seen our group grow from 13 original founders to over 800 members. We now have nine committees that offer a variety of programs for our members and our corporate partners. We also offer an annual conference—the PWH® Leadership Summit—that provides two days of networking and leadership lessons for the entire industry. We have come so far! As you prepare for the new year, make sure you reserve time to reflect on 2023. First, consider how the year went. Did you achieve your work goals? Personal goals? Did you spend enough time with family and friends? Did you give yourself grace in the times of stressfulness? What could have been done differently? What worked especially well? Most importantly, take a moment to be grateful for 2023 and all you accomplished. It never ends up being the “perfect” year, so absolutely celebrate the highlights and successes. This is also a great time to give thought to what you want to accomplish in 2024. As we all know the year starts out so quickly. There are new goals with

a new month, and for many of us on a corporate calendar year, the clock resets as we start a new year. Once January 2nd hits, we all know we must find the energy to hit the ground running. My recommendation is to begin your January with thoughtful intent with both work AND personal goals in mind. It is that balance that helps your year run smoothly and successfully. So, cheers to the beginning of 2024! Let the 20th anniversary of PWH® inspire you to continue the PWH® challenge. This year let’s each strive to add one member to this amazing

The PWH® organization is grateful to Share Moving Media (SMM), publisher of Repertoire magazine, for honoring four PWH® members and industry leaders with induction into the Medical Distribution Hall of Fame. Since 2001, SMM has inducted 43 outstanding industry leaders and celebrated their contribution at a dinner attended by industry members as well as family and friends of inductees. In 2012, Cindy Juhas was honored alongside Ted Almon, Claflin Company. At the time of her induction, Cindy was president of Hospital Associates. Today she is Chief Strategy Officer of CME Corporation. On April 20, 2023, three more women joined the ranks. Janis Dezso is Vice President of

At the 2023 PWH® Leadership Summit, Joan virtually accompanied Cindy, Janis and Anne as the women brought their humility, friendship and humor to an in-person leadership panel. The leaders shared their challenges and achievements in helping to bring their organizations forward and how they continue to motivate employees despite future uncertainties. The Design of PWH® Mentor Circles Delivers Unique Benefits Spotlight on Jennifer Ramthun, Director of Distributor Sales, Parkell PWH® Corporate Partners Committee, Vice Chair Partner Optimization The PWH® Mentoring Committee launched its first Mentor Circle at the 2022 PWH® Leadership Summit. Since then, several circles have launched. Jennifer Ramthun, who serves as Director of Distributor Sales for Parkell and actively supports PWH® as the Vice Chair of Partner Optimization for the PWH® Corporate Partners Committee, is a strong believer in the value of PWH® Mentor Circles. She participated in the first PWH® Mentor Circle at the 2022 Summit, then joined a Circle after the Summit. After leading a PWH® Mentor Circle, she joined another one as a participant. “It’s a fun way to participate, meet other people and network with leaders no matter their role or leadership status,” says Jen. I had the pleasure of talking with Jen this past October. I was able to get to know her a little better and learn more about the unique benefits of PWH® Mentor Circles. When Jen joined PWH® in 2022, she certainly picked a great time to get more involved in our organization because she soon changed companies and took on a new leadership role. Currently, Jen is helping Parkell develop a new distribution strategy. The formerly familyowned business is moving away from self-distribution. “I can’t tell you how many times I pick up the phone and call someone in PWH® to ask for help with navigating new challenges.”

Jen reminded me that since the inception of PWH® in 2004, the organization has always served as a unique source of mentoring and networking for industry executives and aspiring leaders. However, PWH® formalized its mentorship offering with the launch of the PWH® Mentoring Committee several years ago under the leadership of Vicky Lyle. The committee

works hard to match aspiring leaders with just the right role model. Now under the leadership of Khaki Weber, the PWH® Mentoring Committee also provides the value of mentoring in a group setting. Indeed, as the demand for PWH®sponsored mentorship has grown, PWH® Mentor Circles offer a practical way to experience the phenomenal value of PWH® and mentorship.

SUMMIT HIGHLIGHTS

Jen has had many mentors in various roles while working for different organizations, including a mentorship relationship that the PWH® Mentoring Committee set up. She is also a mentor for a PWH® member, and the pair has chosen to continue the relationship. “Sometimes it’s just a text. Sometimes it’s getting on the phone and talking through a situation.” While Jen values one-on-one mentoring, she believes that PWH® Mentor Circles offer many unique benefits because of their design. Rather than meeting with a certain individual, participating in Mentor Circles allows individuals to connect in a group setting with a variety of people from different parts of the industry. Circles are typically comprised of 10 to 15 people who meet virtually every other week over a ten-week period. Jen believes the group setting can be less intimidating, and its diversity can spark innovative dialogue. Mentor Circles can also bring value to those who want a wider range of exposure to PWH®. “Sometimes you just need a connection to find information,” says Jen. “PWH® Mentor Circles are also a great way to network in case you don’t get to travel much yet or know much about the industry. They provide an opportunity to expand and grow in the industry.” From Jen’s perspective, the flexible structure yet consistent schedule of PWH® Mentor Circles allow for strong attendance. Her first circle met on Fridays. She explains that 12 people signed up, and every other week six to seven people attended. “Even if you were busy, you knew it was only an hour and looked forward to that decompression time,” says Jen. “You knew it was worth the time sacrificed to get other things done. People were so good about coming because they

were genuinely interested and benefitted from the group conversation.” Topics cohere PWH® Mentor Circles, while diverse experiences add perspective. For example, under the heading of “How to be a better leader,” each weekly session can offer an opportunity to share ideas and think about leadership in different scenarios. Sometimes, so many people take to a topic, like “How to handle the emotional labor of being a leader,” that the circle will divide into two.

not feel stupid or that you are a bad leader. You can count on the group to support you, lift you up and help you get through the next week’s supply chain issue.” According to Jen, “You realize you are not alone when you join these circles.” Another benefit of PWH® Mentor Circles is that they provide an opportunity for people who may be shy about mentoring to step up. “Some people feel they are not ready to be a mentor, but then they come into this setting and realize they

Jen explains that she learned a tremendous amount of perspective from a participant in one Circle who was negotiating a nurse’s contract while nurses were striking. It was also personally beneficial because Jen’s daughter was applying for nursing school at the time. “Some of us, like me, were navigating previously unheard-of supply chain issues during COVID,” says Jen. “We all had these different views of healthcare, but we all shared an unprecedented amount of stress as leaders because of the unprecedented situations we were trying to navigate.” Circles also offer flexibility with what to talk about depending on who’s able to attend. “We don’t have to stick to the agenda of a larger conference,” says Jen. Beyond exclusive industry insights, PWH® Mentor Circles also offer group support. “We are all together for this hour because it is this little break to share, commiserate and get support for what we are going through,” explains Jen. “You do

have something important to share about their experience with a certain topic,” says Jen. “By participating in Mentor Circles, PWH® members can realize they are ready to be a mentor. It doesn’t matter how much experience you have or your title. Sometimes just your background and experience are valuable.”

Henry Schein Supports Women’s Leadership in the Dental Market

Cultivating a culture of diversity, equity, and inclusion is high priority for dental practices and corporations of any size. For Henry Schein, establishing employee resource groups (ERGs) dedicated to promoting a diverse and inclusive culture has transformed the way employees engage personally and professionally. The company’s first ERG, the Women’s Leadership Network (WLN), gathers women and allies to encourage equity across the organization, and in the dental profession. “When Henry Schein introduced WLN as its first ERG, I believe we recognized the importance in highlighting women in all areas of business but especially within the dental profession,” said Maureen Knott, vice president of strategic marketing and founding member and executive sponsor of WLN. Established in 2017 by a group of women desiring actionable change, WLN aligns itself with Henry Schein’s core values while expanding its goals to enhance women’s opportunities through internal policy changes and development. The impacts of WLN also aim to extend beyond Henry Schein, uplifting women in dentistry through its initiatives. “Witnessing the remarkable growth of Henry Schein’s Women’s Leadership Network and its ability to connect and empower women globally has been truly inspiring,” said Allison Fox, WLN Field Chapter Co-Lead. “By fostering an environment that champions diversity and supports women in healthcare, we not only enhance individual careers but help uplift the healthcare industry.’”

WLN ensures its mission and goals align with 5 strategic pillars to drive results for members and Henry Schein. In raising awareness of women’s singular experiences and partnering with stakeholders to initiate change, the network is seeing undeniable growth in individual members and WLN as a whole. WLN has also contributed to the creation of the SHE: Successful Healthcare Entrepreneurship brand, which aims to build a community of dental and medical practitioners to support integrated health care through a variety of collaboration opportunities. Fundamental to WLN’s success is the support of Henry Schein’s leadership, which has provided funding for programs, joined the Paradigm for Parity coalition, and implemented critical policy and workplace changes, including flexible working schedules, a paid parental leave policy, and updates to parenting rooms. While these changes are specific to Henry Schein, the impact on the dental industry is significant and WLN’s programming aligns nicely with the work of industry-led organizations, such as Women in DSO, the official nonprofit organization supporting the empowerment and growth of women leaders in dental support organizations. “Over the years, the number of women in dentistry has grown significantly and now represents 54.5% of the dental population,” Knott said. “The need to empower female dentists by providing leadership skills applicable to this profession is vital for their future. The shift is happening now, and Henry Schein is at the forefront to provide the products and services needed to advance their careers.”

PWH® Leaders Wish You an Intentional Year As we get ready to kick off another year, PWH® Leaders wish you a happy, successful and productive 2024! Our leaders also remind us to be intentional about setting goals we truly want to achieve. (Thank you to Laura Reline, PWH® Secretary and Vice President, Supplier Management for NDC, for encouraging us to share our 2024 resolutions!)

Allison Therwhanger, PWH® Chair Vice President, Corporate Sales, INNOVIA Medical Each year brings plenty of work goals and objectives. Calling those work goals “resolutions” do not really count since those are more requirements to be a star at your workplace! I try not to stress myself out with extra New Year’s Resolutions, yet the competitive side of me always takes over and has to set up personal goals as well. One that I will share is that I am an avid swimmer. One of my goals for 2024 is to swim 366 miles in 2024 (leap year). This

is an average of a mile per day. I don’t swim every day (and I do travel quite a bit), but I think this would be a great goal. This year I will reach 330 miles and want to stretch an extra 10%. We all have our stretch goals. This will be mine. Swimming laps is my “yoga” or my “zen.” When I have a tough day, getting to the pool and methodically gliding through the water somehow makes all the stresses go away. Maybe it is the weightlessness of the swimming that takes all the weight off my shoulders, so when the swim time is over, life is good again!

Cindy Juhas, PWH® Board Advisor Chief Strategy Officer, CME Corporation Since I have broken more resolutions than I can count, I now make “positive affirmations” to start the new year! I was recently asked, by one of my male coworkers, if I could tone down my “passion” on an important initiative of my company. He claimed that I was over-influencing some people and that might not be the best thing. As I thought through it, I concluded that he was misguided. My passion for this initiative made it a priority and CME has

already benefitted from the effort. Yes, we had to make some early adjustments to the process, but it has been very successful. So, my affirmation for 2024 is to unleash my passion! My long-term goal for CME is for it to be incredibly successful and if my passion can kick-start important initiatives, I am going to use it.

In pursuing personal and professional growth, I recognize that cultivating patience is a fundamental skill. It is the cornerstone of resilience and a powerful tool for navigating life’s inevitable challenges. Here are some steps that help me practice patience: 1 Mindful Breathing and Meditation: Incorporate daily mindfulness practices to calm the mind and train it to respond with patience rather than impulse. 2 Embrace Delays: Acknowledge that delays and setbacks are part of any journey. Instead of frustration, view them as opportunities for learning and growth. 3 Practice Active Listening: Cultivate patience in communication by listening attentively, allowing others the time they need to express themselves fully. 4 Develop Coping Strategies: Identify healthy coping mechanisms to manage stress and impatience. 5 Prioritize Self-Care: Nourish the body and mind through regular exercise, balanced nutrition and sufficient

rest. A well-cared-for body is more resilient to impatience and stress. 6 Practice Empathy: Put yourself in others’ shoes to understand their perspectives and motivations. This fosters patience in interactions and relationships. 7 Reflect and Adapt: Periodically review progress and adjust strategies as needed. Patience involves being flexible and open to change. By committing to the practice of patience, I aim to build a foundation for sustained success, a resilient spirit and a greater sense of well-being. This resolution will benefit me personally and positively influence my interactions with others and the impact I make in my professional endeavors. Here’s to a year of growth, grace, and the art of patience.

With a passion to advance women leaders in our industry, I am continuing to gain skills that will help me encourage women to find their voice and become the best leaders through the power of communication.

I might have a different approach to this topic of a resolution I plan to make for the New Year and why, yet perhaps not. I do not make New Year's resolutions. Instead, for a long time, I have viewed September as my "New Year." When I had children, school started in September, precipitating purchasing a calendar that began in September to keep all our activities and lives in order. Rather than resolutions that are all too often established and broken, in September every year, I set goals I want to achieve. Plans are also not immune to failure. I believe those disappointments are a result of the way we approach them. To ensure I do not fall into that trap, the age-old question of "How do you eat an elephant?" rings true in my head when goal setting. Of course, the answer is "one bite at a time." So, I jump into SMART goal setting and backward planning to establish those bite-sized mini goals, or milestones, to achieve the larger goal that aligns with my priorities. Try keeping those resolutions or goals visually available so you can see them daily to stay engaged and maximize the success of how YOU approach them. Happy New Year!

Say Goodbye to Imposter Syndrome By Rachel Bailey, PhD, PWH ® Connect Journal, Editor

My New Year’s resolution is to get over Imposter Syndrome. According to a 2022 Harvard Business Review article by Kess Eruteya, Founder of InclusionZ, “Around onethird of young people suffer from it, and 70% of everyone else is likely to experience it at some point in their lives.” Generally, Imposter Syndrome is the dis-ease of feeling unworthy of an identity, whether it is a new professional role or a new set of responsibilities. Here is my experience of it. When I started my first publishing job back in 2000, I felt like an imposter because when I began I knew very little about the industry for which I was writing, editing, and selling advertising—metalworking. When I transitioned over to the healthcare industry in 2007, I felt like an imposter not only because I had no training in healthcare sales yet, but also because I no longer worked as a magazine publisher but as a producer of online training videos (shout out to Share Moving Media). When I started doing the same thing in animal health, I felt like an imposter because I did not yet belong in that industry (shout out to Vet Advantage). When I went back to school to earn a doctorate in communication with a specialization in health, I felt like an imposter academic because I had become a newbie again. All this time, I have stayed engaged with PWH® because belief in its mission—a diverse healthcare industry equally led by women—is what inspired me to go back to school in the first place. And yet, because I work for myself, and not a major healthcare company, and have cultivated a nonconventional career path, I have felt like an imposter member. But no more. Please join me. No more downplaying ourselves to ourselves! We deserve to be in our professional roles because we believe in serving the healthcare industry and in the mission of PWH®. Cheers to feeling authentic in pursuit of our big important goals in 2024!

Tools to Diversify Your Workplace At HIDA’s Executive Conference, our organization convened a panel discussion on “Leading-Edge Strategies for Attracting a Talented, Diverse Workforce.” The event featured Brian Black, Director of Diversity & Inclusion Customer Channels for ThermoFisher Scientific; Shawnta Friday-Stroud, Dean of the School of Business at Florida A&M University; and Beverly Kuykendall, Vice President of Corporate Growth for AvMEDICAL. Panelists stressed that front-end involvement, a reevaluation of credentials, and strong sponsorship opportunities as the three keys to creating a diverse workforce.

Show Up Early: Front-End Involvement to Recruit Talent

Break the Paper Ceiling: Reevaluate Credentialing

When it comes to recruiting talent, companies should begin engaging students with on-campus activities and experiential learning as early as freshman and sophomore year. Waiting until Career Day to show up is far too late.

Companies should re-evaluate whether certain jobs require a college degree. For decades, the college degree requirement has been reflexively tacked on to job listings, whether or not such educational attainment is essential to the job. This knee-jerk reaction creates a “paper ceiling” that effectively locks out two-thirds of American workers who lack such a credential. Even for positions where a college degree is necessary, job listings that call for specific majors are limiting. Hire for skill sets, not for majors. Most importantly, look at job applicants as fully rounded individuals rather than a sum total of grades, courses, and credentials.

Sponsors are Better than Mentors When it comes to retention, companies should understand the difference between mentors and sponsors. Mentors can teach you valuable skills and can be found at every level, because we can learn from everyone. But a sponsor is a teacher with power: They can advocate for you within the company. Consequently, it is not sufficient to match up an incoming employee with a mentor at their same professional level. Companies should ideally find sponsors two managerial levels above the incoming employee, in revenue-generating departments of the business.

HIDA’s Emerging Leaders Program HIDA is launching the Medical Supply Chain Emerging Leaders Program, which is open to any undergraduate (sophomore or above) or graduate student pursuing a degree in logistics or supply chain management with an interest in working in the field of medical product distribution. HIDA will host Emerging Leaders at our February 2024 MedSupplyChain Conference in Cape Coral, Florida. The Association will provide special programming and networking opportunities for Emerging Leaders at this event and defray the cost of travel and lodging for the conference. If you know of a deserving student wanting to pursue a career in healthcare distribution, please let us know.
